Currently a number of banks are dealing with liquidity issues, where their loan portfolios greatly exceed the money they have in deposits. This means that they have to be more selective or cap the number of new loans they can make. By increasing deposits, it may ease the "credit crunch" that is currently being experienced. Its a tragedy........ just like Rome, the U.S. is doomed unless someone steps up and tells it like it is. We need to change the way we live, or we are doomed.
