Obama camp posts tax returns

Sen. Barack Obama is challenging Sen. Hillary Clinton to release her 2006 tax returns.

Sen. Barack Obama is challenging Sen. Hillary Clinton to release her 2006 tax returns.

(CNN) - A spokesman for Hillary Clinton’s campaign sent out a press release Tuesday morning belatedly attacking Barack Obama for his failure to release his tax returns – at virtually the exact moment the Illinois senator’s campaign posted his 2000-2006 filings on his campaign Web site. [View tax returns here]

“In the public record there are 20 years of Hillary's tax returns, hundreds of thousands of pages of records from her time in White House and countless other documents detailing her time in public life. Sen. Obama's record is far more opaque. Sen. Obama has not released his tax returns, except for 2006,” Clinton spokesman Phil Singer said in a statement sent to reporters just as the Obama camp posted the Illinois senator’s returns online.

The newly-released Obama documents include all schedules. In a statement sent to reporters, the Obama campaign criticized Clinton for not releasing her 2006 tax returns, pointing to her decision to lend her campaign $5 million earlier this year, and former President Bill Clinton’s $20 million payout from supermarket holding company Yucaipa.

Clinton has promised to release the returns sometime after this year’s April 15 tax deadline, just a few days before Pennsylvania’s April 22 primary.

“Senator Clinton recently claimed that she’s ‘the most transparent figure in public life,’ yet she’s dragging her feet in releasing something as basic as her annual tax returns,” Obama’s communications director, Robert Gibbs, said in a statement. “Senator Clinton can’t claim to be vetted until she allows the public the opportunity to see her finances - particularly with respect to any investment in tax shelters.”

UPDATE: At a press conference Tuesday afternoon, Clinton announced that she would be moving up the release date of her tax returns, and might make the documents public within the week.

How ironic! Clinton starts to blast Obama for not releasing HIS tax returns, which he is at that moment in the process of doing – and she STILL hasn't released her tax returns!!

Come on, Hillary: confession is good for the soul.

Clinton is not going to release her tax returns until a time just before the Pa. primary. The documents will not be complete. The full understanding of them and the questions that will be raised will be too late to be published prior to voting. Then they will blame everyone else for "unfair dirty attacks.

It isn't like she has to dig them up from the celler or something. Call the accountant and have him scan them in the computer and put on a disc (if he already hasn't).

Golly!!! What is the big deal? If there isn't anything to hide she surely makes you wonder.....

I was recently at a meeting for women supporters of Clinton in PA and we were talking about the issues. I learned that Hillary recently lied about her experience in Bosnia.

Many of us decided that we have had enough of this. We agreed that we kept ignoring the negatives from Hillary because we so desperately wanted to have a women as president.

Well we just learned that Obama is considering Sebelius as his running mate. She is the women who led the democratic address to the last Bush State of the Union address. She is a wondering lady and committed mother and wife. She'd make a great VP.

    Obama is our choice.

I would be very surprised if Clinton's tax returns are made public before Pennsylvania's primary but you never know. In any case I'm sure someone is working very hard right now at making everything look good.
Does anyone really expect those tax returns to be truthful?

I bet the next thing the Clinton campaign demands is a letter from Obama's kindergarten teacher. Seriously, Hill, you're just digging the hole deeper. Keep digging!

As a German, I am puzzled by the American obsession with tax files. Over here in Germany, nobody in his right mind would care about the taxreturns of a politician. These things are private in Germany and everybody respects this privacy.

As far as I know, the IRS is VERY thorough with income tax files, so any hanky-panky would not go unnoticed. Clinton has to file a lot of information about her financial situation as a senator, so what kinds of world shattering relevations do Clinton haters expect?

The First Lady files were just good for another stroll down memory lane to the Lewinsky affair and I guess that the tax files will not reveal much more. There are already 20 years of files available to gloat about, so what do you expect? She knew years ago that she would run for office, so cheating for a couple of thousands of dollars would not be worth it, would it?

Why is she not releasing her tax returns now? I guess that she wants to have the headlines or the stuff is just not available right now. We will see...

I'm confused. I just submitted my 2007 tax forms. My 2006 return was submitted LAST YEAR! What kind of timeline is Hillary working from? Does she get to submit her return every other year!

What is the problem, tell the accountant to forward the disc. These records are not filed in the root cellar in the basement.

If there is nothing to hide, she sure makes it look like there is.

Maybe they 'Mis- Spoke" in the documents.

Looks like there is a little spy in the Clinton camp working for Obama.

Senator Clinton already stated she will have her returns available when they are filed. I still haven't finished my returns yet and I only have one income coming in.

Also, to those who state that Senator Clinton is going to ruin this for the democratic party, please stop.

There is a reason why we let all americans vote and she has full right to keep on going.

This is not over and Hillary Clinton will be our next President.

Obama is polarizing this nomination process by turning his campaign into a Negative Campaign of No much for the unifier of some not all.
If Senator Clinton wants to release her Tax info on the 15th so what??? Poor Obamanites, I can't wait til the Pro-Obama Media gets targeted again by SNL. At least SNL gets it.
MSNBC and CNN and George Stfanopolis is not paying attention to the CEO's and Owners of their networks and will pay the heaviest price of all...loss of public support and ratings will plunged faster that Dow Jones.

It is unfortunate the Clintons can not be trusted, worse is getting their daughter involved in their shameless behavior. We have not gotten out of the consequence of Bush/Cheney false predicaments and here they are luring us into another. No, it is "SHAME TO YOU" CLINTONS

I wish people would stop all the fighting. It's okay to offer legitimate criticisms of the candidates, but harping on petty issues like Pastor Wright not doing anyone any good. Every time I read a thread, the bloggers find something negative to say.
