Obama camp posts tax returns

Sen. Barack Obama is challenging Sen. Hillary Clinton to release her 2006 tax returns.
Sen. Barack Obama is challenging Sen. Hillary Clinton to release her 2006 tax returns.

(CNN) - A spokesman for Hillary Clinton’s campaign sent out a press release Tuesday morning belatedly attacking Barack Obama for his failure to release his tax returns – at virtually the exact moment the Illinois senator’s campaign posted his 2000-2006 filings on his campaign Web site. [View tax returns here]

“In the public record there are 20 years of Hillary's tax returns, hundreds of thousands of pages of records from her time in White House and countless other documents detailing her time in public life. Sen. Obama's record is far more opaque. Sen. Obama has not released his tax returns, except for 2006,” Clinton spokesman Phil Singer said in a statement sent to reporters just as the Obama camp posted the Illinois senator’s returns online.

The newly-released Obama documents include all schedules. In a statement sent to reporters, the Obama campaign criticized Clinton for not releasing her 2006 tax returns, pointing to her decision to lend her campaign $5 million earlier this year, and former President Bill Clinton’s $20 million payout from supermarket holding company Yucaipa.

Clinton has promised to release the returns sometime after this year’s April 15 tax deadline, just a few days before Pennsylvania’s April 22 primary.

“Senator Clinton recently claimed that she’s ‘the most transparent figure in public life,’ yet she’s dragging her feet in releasing something as basic as her annual tax returns,” Obama’s communications director, Robert Gibbs, said in a statement. “Senator Clinton can’t claim to be vetted until she allows the public the opportunity to see her finances - particularly with respect to any investment in tax shelters.”

UPDATE: At a press conference Tuesday afternoon, Clinton announced that she would be moving up the release date of her tax returns, and might make the documents public within the week.

Barack Obama is an honest and straightforward leader, in stark contrast to George Bush...and increasingly, Hillary Clinton.

A person I knew use to divide human beings into three categories Those who prefer have nothing to hide rather than being obliged to lie, those who prefer lying to having nothing to hide, and finally those who like both lying and the hidden. Where does Hillary fit?

    Dear Fellow Hillary Supporters,

The more Hillary stays in the race the mainstream media will get more and more ads and money. They know this and they want this race to continue. Ultimately, this horse race will hurt all of us who are real democrats. As far as I am concerned, I thought Biden was the best choice; however, it is time for Hillary to quit as she has virtually no chance to win other than destroying the party. I am sorry but you should tell her, I beg you, that this cannot go on and on…..

Good for Barack he got his taxes out. You got them done before april 15th, good job. Hillary & Bill need a little more time since they have alot more wealth too consider. I.R.S. says you have till April 15th , I guess they still have a-little time yet. I myself wouldn't want too show my tax returns . Obama campaign would just resort too more false statements. If the I.R.S. had found any thing wrong with those returns I'm sure we would have heard about it already. Hillary I wouldn't show them anything . Let them wallow in there own self righteous claims. Obamanites keep trying too keep that hallow glowing, I can barely see it anymore. Fades into history just another flop. Go Hillary Go

Where is the issue? Will this help those who have no health insurance? Will this help those who live on the streests because the Economy is such crap that they lost there job? NO this is not the ISSUE, this is NOT serious. We vote for who can help the most, not WHO the person is. This weekend on Larry King OBAMA, said he would use President 41 G H W Bush and HIS STAFF! He then went on to tell how great Bush 1 was! This is incredible since the staff of 88-92 already has a job, they are in office RIGHT NOW! Lets avoid those mistakes like putting Cheney and the gang back in office. lETS VOTE FOR EXPERIENCE

Jack what is the big deal about tax reports? I dont feel anyone has the right to see mine and I make under 25,000 dollars but that is my business. Obama is always crying about something now it is tax statements of the Clintons dont be so nosy and find a way to get us out of the mess this country is in that would help everyone. I hope the media will start telling facts and not picking on Hillary all the time. Go Hillary we need you .....Dorothy

The last six years are the tax returns people want to see from the Clinton's. We don't need to keep hearing there are 20 years of returns from their previous runs for the White House. Stop making excuses and release the ones you only need to go to Kinko's and copy.

WHAT ABOUT ALL OF THE OWRKINGS ABOUT HIS HOUSE SALE. nOW ANYONE CAN BUY BELOW THE APPRAISED PRICE. BUT THEN WAS A DIFFERENT STORY. YOU HEAR ABOUT MOBS DOING THAT, SELLING THINGS BELOW COST AS A QUID PRO QUO. SO WHAT DID OBAMA GIVE???? BETWEEN BEING PART OF THE BIGOTRY OF HIS MENTOR-PREACHER, AND HIS SLIGHT OF HAND AND SURROGATES. HE'S NO BETTER THAN ANY OTHER POLITICIAN. THAT'S WHY EXPERIENCE COUNTS. I DON'T MEAN THE BOSNIA THING, I MEAN HER OFFICE WAS CLOSER THAN GORE'S AND SHE SAT IN ON A NUMBER OF MEETINGS AS OBAMA SO OBLIGINGLY POINTED OUT. NAFTA, WHAT WAS SHE SUPPOSE TO DO AT THAT TIME, SHE WASN'T ELECTED, SHE SUPPORTED HER HUSBAND.

Why hasn't CNN "REALLY" gotten on Hillary about the sniper fire in Bosnia. She claims she 'misspoke', but clearly this was a deliberate and outright lie and it speaks of her character. Now who do you want to answer the phone at 3 am and tell the truth? Shame on you CNN.

Its obvious that Hitlary is delaying her tax returns in order to minimize the damages done to her campaign before the Pennsylvania primary. I can imagine the colossus of shenanigans and scandalous items that can be found on those papers.

I am a Hillary supporter yet for the past weeks I have came to the conclusion that Obama would be suited better to be our next president. I don't feel to comfortable to entrust in someone that distort or mislead the people by lying about a simple event. Yet again that cannot release her tax return. She wants our support yet she cannot provide the people her tax return. How shamefull.

I still don't understand the reason why the tax returns have not yet been release. Obama has release all returns for the last 5 years. What exactly are the Clintons hiding?

How fitting. Spoke too soon, yes? The Clinton campaign blasts him and at the very same moment he is actually posting his returns on-line. Imagine doing something like that and no one even had to force his hand. So, what does her mouthpiece have to say now?

Sad to say, I was a Bill and Hillary supporter for years. I never believed some of the nasty back-biting things being said about them. However, this entire primary has proven to me that they are exactly what people have said...manipulative, scheming, insincere and shameless.

    Barack,
You have not won one big blue state except your home state. I do not understand your claim of independants and others from the states democrats can not win. It is good Resume but these votes go to toilet and has no value except giving this best opportunity to McCain.
Give up your claim and become a team with Hillary and enjoy VP and grow up to become president

Thank you Obama. Hillary Clinton lied about her trip to Bosnia ,Kosovo. She will not release her tax returns,it contains material that will derailed her chances to win Pennsylvania. oops! Sorry, Pennsylvania will vote for this lier and cheat than voting for a honest and decent bi- racial American. That's why Pennsylvania will be the most Economically deprived state in this union if, Hilary or McCain wins. Old white folks get ready for the backlash from your kids and grand kids when things goes bad because of your prejudices. Braced yourself for the next depression and hit wave, when you all vote for Hillary or McCain. Hillary is no Bill and McCain is no Reagan.
