Chelsea Clinton has taken a high-profile role in her mother’s presidential campaign.
Chelsea Clinton has taken a high-profile role in her mother’s presidential campaign.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Campaigns bring contrasts – and flashbacks.

For the second time in as many weeks, Chelsea Clinton confronted the downside of her father’s legacy on the campaign trail: A student at North Carolina State University asked her about the Monica Lewinsky scandal, taking issue with her assertion in the first encounter that such a question was out of bounds.

The exchange played out like this:

Student: “(You were asked) whether your father's relationship in the White House had any affect or did it detriment your mother at all, and you responded saying that it was none of that persons business and i would like you to say whether or not its our business and uh,

Clinton: “It's none of your business."

Student: "Right but I, because fortunately or unfortunately he is the president, or was president at the time so as American people, I feel that it is our business."

Clinton: “Well sir, I respectfully disagree. I think it is something that is personal to my family. I’m sure there are things that are personal to your family that you dont think are anyone else’s business either... but also on a larger point, I don't think you should vote for or against my mother because of my father.”

Off to class went the student, and off to the blogs and shows like The Situation Room went the debate, yet again, not only over the appropriateness of such questions but over the campaign role of a young woman who once was carefully shielded from the harsh political spotlight by two protective parents.

It is not my place as to whether Ms. Clinton’s answer is the right one – she has every right to draw the line where she sees fit, and voters have every right to agree or disagree with her decision.

But watching such moments, and her high profile role in this campaign, brings back two vivid memories of the 1992 campaign.

One was Super Bowl Sunday 1992 – it was the day of the infamous “60 Minutes” interview in which the Clintons acknowledged difficulties in their marriage but said they had fought through them and were determined to stay together. I also interviewed them that day; I was chief political correspondent for The Associated Press at the time, and interviewed then-Governor Clinton and Mrs. Clinton just after the CBS interview.

Most of the interview was conducted in a sedan during a drive from a Boston hotel to Logan Airport. At the airport, I boarded a small plane with the governor and Mrs. Clinton boarded a separate plane back to Little Rock; she wanted to be with Chelsea when the “60 Minutes” interview aired that night.

The second flashback is to a day months later – after Mr. Clinton had won the election. He was preparing to move out of the Arkansas governor’s mansion, and invited a small group of reporters in to see the packing. As he led the tour, he and Mrs. Clinton told a few nostalgic stories, and a young woman - who I believe was 12 at the time s– aid a few very shy but polite “hellos” to the strangers who were in the home she would soon leave for the White House.

It was that memory that made me laugh at another answer Chelsea Clinton gave on campus Monday: She was asked if she would move back to the White House if her mother wins the presidency. She noted she was 28 now, and with a confident laugh and smile said the last thing she could envision was moving back in with her parents.

Not the shy girl I remember from the Arkansas governor’s mansion nearly 16 years ago.

Watch Chelsea handle a Lewinsky question on the trail

Why they don't ask her mother ???

Gisela Rentmeister   April 1st, 2008 7:56 pm ET

The students' questions for Chelsea have to be considered relevant to Bill's affair with a Whitehouse employee while in office and in every aspect responsible to the American people. It was in direct connection with his Monica Levinsky affair when he pointed that proverbial finger at his fellow citizens and blatantly lied to them.

Nobody can possibly doubt that this lie was approved, if not initiated by Hillary at the time – that would just not be in the cards for a Hillary Clinton. So if, as the leader of a nation, you lie and publicly distort the truth on television, the matter should be considered a private one and not become subject to questions later on....

KT   April 1st, 2008 6:37 pm ET

I agree so what they are public figures or servants. I don't know every affair the county judge is having or sheriffs. I don't know every little thing the sanitation people are doing.

I don't care about his affair. I am sure that any answer Chelsea gives is not going to make everyone happy. I think she has chosen to take the high road and stick to stumping for her mother and the issues.

A good portion of what the news has been reporting for the most part is snippets of gossip or hearsay.

I think Chelsea was very smart in her decision to not talk directly to the media and not answer questions about the relationship ups and downs of her parents. She does not know what goes on between a husband and wife.

So what he lied so what HRC perception of an event was different. I don't see anyone jumping on Obama's lies or exaggerations. No one made a big deal about his wifes thesis and some of the harsh things it said, no one said anything when he lied about his relation with Rezko, etc.

So get real, get back to real news, and impartiality. I think it is important to think for ourselves, disregard pundits and sound bites.

Chelsea stick to your guns and don't be bullied by bloggers or the media.

Both President Clinton and Senator Clinton had accomplished so much for our country. We had a healthy economy in the 90's with 300 million + surpluses, we weren't at wars. People all over the world loved us. The problem with their personal lives is really none of our business. Let it go people...

LouR   April 1st, 2008 5:39 pm ET

Of course Chelsea as well as Hillary have an obligation to answer the question regarding Lewinsky,as long as Hillary wants to continue to run for President .It is a public issue not a private family matter under these circumstances and the refusal to answer in any manner is arrogant and simply a way of avoidance not worthy of someone campaigning for their parent running for President.

Linda-Miami   April 1st, 2008 5:36 pm ET

I say hire a special prosecutor for all member of Congress, governors, and all elected officials and let's see what we uncover......wouldn't that be interesting!!! All that money wasted for something that is so private. This question should be directed at Mrs. Clinton and guess what....women will relate because many of us have been cheated on by a man in our life. We know her pain.

Carolyn   April 1st, 2008 5:36 pm ET

The anti-Clinton (anit-women) comments have reached a new high when people think they have the right to ask a daughter to explain her father's behavior. ASK HIM!!!
As for Ms. Costello and her comments...way off base.

Carrie PA   April 1st, 2008 5:36 pm ET

Chelsea has put herself into this campaign mess. If she can't handle questions from voters and the press, Chelsea should go back to NYC and work for a living.

Imploding Clintons   April 1st, 2008 5:34 pm ET

How is answering about any Clinton historical scandal any diff than Obama having to answer (again and again, because Clinton operatives and pro-media keep giving the story legs) about Rev. Wright? As an adult suragate, stumping on her mom's behalf, she should find an answer that spins the neg to a pos (like an adult would handle it). Also, I liked the response that where was Chelsea when Mom HRC was repeating lines since Dec on Bosnia... good Q.

bill Clinton   April 1st, 2008 5:34 pm ET

Why is Americans so stupid? Democrats Really saying they will vote for other party if their loser Hillary loses she already lost as I can see....

mkay   April 1st, 2008 5:34 pm ET

why couldn't she just answer "no" when asked if lewinsky is still an issue?

but instead she dodged the question which makes questioners more anxious to push.

Oh well, Bill, chelsea, and hillary are all running for the whitehouse

RENEA,PLYMOUTH,MI   April 1st, 2008 4:59 pm ET

HILLARY THINK THAT OBAMAS PASTOR MATTERS WHY NOT THE PRESIDENT WHO SHAMED HIS WIFE,THE WHITE HOUSE AND THE NATION!

annie   April 1st, 2008 4:57 pm ET

Somebody get Chelsea out of there or ask her why her mom lied about sniper fire. This is getting ridiculous!!
As for the Monica questions...it is our business. Bill relationship with that woman almost sank his presidency. Personally speaking Chelsea is right but you can't answer some questions about White House experience and not answer others. How DID your mom handle it Chelsea? It would be better to say what is probably the truth, YOU DON'T KNOW!! As much as this is a family matter it probably wasn't addressed to you the same way it was addressed by the media and the main parties involved. You don't know...just say that and be honest. I see a family resemblance. You, your mom and dad will never apologize or claim they don't know the answer when they can wiggle out of it by saying "that's inappropriate" or flat out lying.

Eddie G   April 1st, 2008 4:52 pm ET

It is time for her to face the fact...if she is putting herself out there on the campaign, she has to face the tough questions. The free ride is over. She is 28 years old, not a kid anymore. The media should have a field day with her, she has been protected by mommy and daddy for too long. Why on earth has the national media let the Clinton's dictate what they do? It is absurd.

Denise   April 1st, 2008 4:51 pm ET

Chelsea has to understand that her families legacy comes with good and bad. Her reponses must reflect wisdom. She can not give critics more ammuntion. Chelsea get smart, not nasty.

North Carolina   April 1st, 2008 4:46 pm ET

I think the more important statement is that we should not vote for or against Hillary based on what Bill has done. But isn't that actually what Hillary wants? She wants us to consider her 35 years of experience when deciding whether or not to vote for her, including her time as "co-president" when Bill was in the White House. If she's going to run on HIS experience, then we must be able to consider all of it.

unbiased observer   April 1st, 2008 4:45 pm ET

Dear CNN,
your editors seem to have confused the terms "Chelsea confronts" with "Chelsea deflects". Are you outsourcing again??
thanks, unbiased observer

Joan Johnson   April 1st, 2008 4:44 pm ET

I say Good for you Chelsea, that the same way I would have handle that question. None of your business. This is old news. I wonder who put these people up to asking this type of question.

I, more interested in how Senator Clinton is going to get us out of the mess the republican party has got us into.
I'm also tired of the Obama campaign trying to get Senator Clinton to drop out of the race. I live in Oregon and I am going to vote for her, because I feel she will do the best job. Lets get out of the past and go to the feature. Hang in there Senator Clinton

JJ from Arizona   April 1st, 2008 4:44 pm ET

This is what I said to Jack Cafferty:

If your boss found out that you committed a sex act AT WORK with a co-worker and confronted you about it, would you tell your boss it was none of their business? Furthermore, would your boss agree with you and be ok with it? We the taxpayers are the President’s boss, and it is most certainly our business.

That being said, I am not sure that Chelsea is the right person to ask this question to. But it is not a subject that should be off limits. A person's personal conduct is very indicative of their professional conduct, and the fact that these incidents occurred at the work place makes it about professional conduct. I might be stepping over the line here, but I think it brings serious questions about their relationship and whether they were able to reconcile because of a strong relationship, or if this is a relationship of two people who know that they each need the other if they want to stay in power.

Larry Buchas   April 1st, 2008 4:44 pm ET

I'm an Obama supporter and have to say that's an issue that crosses the line. I commend Chelsea for her efforts. Both her parents and Clinton supporters should feel real proud of her.

It makes you wonder if Chelsea ever decides to enter the world of politics. I hope she considers.

Stacy Clarks,   April 1st, 2008 4:42 pm ET

Let me first say that I AM AN OBAMA SUPPORTER,

However, I think these people need to reframe the questions in such a wa as to highlight HOW it affects the American people (lying under oath for example). As far as the extra-marital affairs, that is none of our business, the other stuff is.

However, Chelsea needs to find another way to answer, that is less rude (simply "I would like to focus on the issues" will be nice)

OBAMA 08!!!!!!!!

Linda Feldman   April 1st, 2008 4:41 pm ET

The question itself is rude but the answer was also rude. The country was deeply effected by Bill Clinton's reckless behavior. He essentially gave his many enemies the ammunition that resulted in an impeachment, the decision of a damaged Al Gore to distance himself and the resulting Bush victory which the country has suffered under for 8 years. So maybe the question should have been: The impeachment of a sitting president had an enormous effect on the country. What effect, if any, did it have on your mother's run for the presidency?

HRC in 08   April 1st, 2008 4:41 pm ET

Leave the past in the past. What I care about now is getting the most qualified candidate elected for president and that is Hillary Clinton!

Voter For Truth, Dignity and the Election of Hillary Clinton   April 1st, 2008 4:40 pm ET

Anita   April 1st, 2008 4:38 pm ET

I stand corrected

Stephanie, PA   April 1st, 2008 4:38 pm ET

I'm surprised and a bit annoyed at how Ms. Clinton believes certain questions are out of bounds. In the political arena, every question is in bounds, as well have seen over during this campaign and just about every other.

You can' t have it both ways. You can't put yourself in the spotlight and only expect easy and soft questions or comments. If this is to be a rowdy and full-blown brawl, as your father says it should be, then everyone in the spotlight, including Ms. Clinton, should be prepared to fight.

So, Ms. Clinton, all questions are valid!

KK   April 1st, 2008 4:37 pm ET

If and a very big IF Hill wins and Lover Boy Bill is in the White House what will he be doing?

People really need to know about past and future of Hill & Bill.

honkey white guy from cali   April 1st, 2008 4:27 pm ET

Regardless if your in the Clinton camp or Obama camp this question should not be made to the daughter. it is not just none of the persons business asking but it is also none of her daughters business what is going on in her parents marriage. those are personal thing to be dealt with and by the husband and wife accordingly. This campaign is been a long and hard one for all parties but in the name of common sense, let this one go. These 2 candidates should be attacking Mc Cain with the effort they put into tearing each other down especially Obama who already knows he will be the nominee he should be in that same comfort zone Mc Cain is Hillary at this point is like Mike Hukabee. she does have every right to stay in the race but common sense and better judgment should tell her otherwise it is no responsible to ask hard working Americans for money when you know you can not win!!

Robin   April 1st, 2008 4:26 pm ET

If she cannot take it, according to her father, she should be in the politics.

DB, San Francisco   April 1st, 2008 4:26 pm ET

Chelsea is 28 and stumping for her choice for President, not just for her mom. Hillary is leaning on her 8 years as First Lady as an integral part of her "experience" and preparation to be President. So, as so many have voiced before, she has to deal with every aspect of those 8 years and her advocates, yes, even her daughter, should be prepared and willing to respond to questions about Whitewater, Lewinsky, whatever. "None of your business" does not cut it. As President, we would expect Hillary Clinton to take care of the country's business and that makes her and everything about her the country's business.

Sharon   April 1st, 2008 4:26 pm ET

Media bias against Hillary is at an all time high.....you better be careful....

You are going down a rather slippery slope.....if you continue to bash her the way you have the last couple weeks, not only will your precious BO lose 28% of her voters, he will lose the women's vote as well...........

ltd1974   April 1st, 2008 4:26 pm ET

David! It's a fair question. Her father was the president who LIED just like hifey Hillary about snipers and experience. LIES

go OBAMA

Ross in MD   April 1st, 2008 4:25 pm ET

Why would anyone care what Chelsea Clinton has to say?

For that matter, since her mom lost the nomination why would anyone care what Hillary Clinton has to say?

Ifeanyi Azubike Houston Texas   April 1st, 2008 4:25 pm ET

Being first comes with lots of goodies and some badies. She cannot cherish all the memories that came with her position as first daughter but dream off the nightmares. The Monica affair is real and helps definre her Dads presidency. Her Mum benefits from that presidency because most of the creditials that she claims come from her fist lady days. Chelsea can therefore not be selective in what to take out of the same presidency that made Bill, Hillary and Chelsea the CLINTONS.

Grif   April 1st, 2008 4:23 pm ET

You will many obstacle's, Chelsea! I think you're doing just Great...

It's all part of the package. More Power to you girl...

Kevin   April 1st, 2008 4:23 pm ET

I think Chelsea is Correct , You Go Girl

Debbie, NJ   April 1st, 2008 4:21 pm ET

Chelsea should confront the question then it will go away. Or at least Bill should say something. He always has the mike up to his face talking about something. Why doesn't he defend his daughter. Be a man and own up to your repsonsibility. It was your mistake not Chelsea. I am a Obama supporter but I think it is wrong for Billy to leave his daughter out there having to answer to this. It is a legitimate question. How can Hillary trust he won't be setting up shop again if she wins. Ummm. Something to think about huh.

I BET HIS MOMMA IS REALLY PROUD OF HIM   April 1st, 2008 4:21 pm ET

THIS IS JUST SAD, SHE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANY OF THIS. HOW PITIFUL THAT THESE YOUNG PEOPLE ARE SO RUDE.

Ray Ito   April 1st, 2008 4:21 pm ET

This "protective" hallo that Chelsea acquired during this campaign trail is a hoax.

Anything or anybody that is connected to a political candidate during a campaign period is "public property" to the electorate.
Her insistence that you're not permitted to go "there" is living in a false illusion of a "first daughter" of bye-gone days.
She should snap herself from that mode and realize that she's now a 28 years old woman who can start a family, and appear on the democratic ticket in a few years if her father's ambitions are still alive.

Republican voting for Obama   April 1st, 2008 4:20 pm ET

Sadly Chelsea had no problem lying with her mother about being under fire in Bosnia. Sadly, she has to deal with parents who have no problem lying in general.

Mark Levine   April 1st, 2008 4:20 pm ET

Whether you agree with the line of questioning or not, these inquiries are a direct result of Chelsea actively campaigning for her mother while emphatically refusing interviews from any member of the press, even little kids representing an elementary school newspaper. She is entitled to her privacy...if she remains a private figure. Once she decides to become an active surrogate for a candidate she becomes a public figure and should be required to respond to the media just like everyone else. She can't have it both ways.

Alicia   April 1st, 2008 4:19 pm ET

What was the point of this article? That's just like you guys reporting on Obama bowling. It has nothing to do with the issues and, this piece in particular, has nothing to do with the election. Chelsea is not running for the presidency. NEW TOPIC PLEASE!

m gray   April 1st, 2008 4:18 pm ET

It is the publics business, however I can understand why she would like not to address it. I think she would come over a lot less aggressive if she just declined politely to discuss it instead of saying its not the public business.

Carol   April 1st, 2008 4:17 pm ET

The country addressed the scandal AT THE TIME IT HAPPENED. It is over! Move on. Keep it up CNN, you keep posting this nonsense for ratings will only hurt your beloved candidate, Obama.

Rob   April 1st, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Interesting that it took college students to ask questions about Clinton scandals. Where were you guys? Oh yeah, forgot Clinton News Network (CNN)

BK   April 1st, 2008 4:17 pm ET

John,
Why don't you tell these young college students about the budget surplus, affordable college, low gas prices, and the Clintons working for all Americans when Bill Clinton was in office. You know as well as anyone that was no more than a right wing conspiracy. Tell the truth CNN has created this mess. Clean it up! Or would you rather educate them with stupid questions from Obama fans?

Wendy, NC   April 1st, 2008 4:17 pm ET

I think when Bill Clinton was in office it was America's Business, but all these people are trying to do is find out how Chelsea handled the situation...well, how would you handle it? I mean the world was watching your Dad lying about cheating on your mom.

She is right, regardless of the fact that her mother is now running for President, it is not Hillary that lied under oath and it is not Hillary that was impeached. Back off ppl! It is NONE of your business!

Joe Hanson, Montana   April 1st, 2008 4:16 pm ET

People need to stop with that question. Married people have affairs all the time and it's none of our business. For the fact it did not affect the way Clinton ran the country. Things were still good. Deal with the issues people Economy, Health Care, Iraq and stay out of people's personal business. The president is not GOD. He breathes just like us and makes mistakes to.

Dave   April 1st, 2008 4:14 pm ET

John,

I believe she has the right not to respond to those questions if she were not actively campaigning. In that case, her privacy would need to be respected and she woud have every right to expect it. BUT, if she voluntarily projects herself into this campaign wich she has, then she has to play by the rules that apply to all people involved in the campaigns, and be held accountable for her answers.

JJ in NY   April 1st, 2008 4:14 pm ET

If she can't, or won't answer the question, then the little imp shouldn't be there in the first place. How hypocritical and disingenuous...just like her mother .

DM Arlington Texas   April 1st, 2008 4:14 pm ET

If at the age of 27 or 28, she can 't handle what her father done in his past and to who he did with. Hell, her mother excepted it. Bill Clinton having sex in the white house with her there such a lack of respect. Honesty is not one of he Clinton's best qualities.

Mike   April 1st, 2008 4:14 pm ET

Not sure how this has anything to do with Chelsea Clinton and the election... I am not sure how that question helps with the war or economic problems... all it does is show that Hillary is a much bigger person than 50% of the population that has been divorced...

Then again the first kid to ask the question was on all the news programs... he was famous for a few days!!!

deb   April 1st, 2008 4:14 pm ET

No college student is really interested in the answer to a question about Monica. Let's do the math, if they are a senior in college now they could be 22. That means when the incident unfolded they were in 6th or 7th grade. It is hard for me to believe that they remember anything first hand about the issue.

Chelsea's 'non ya' answer is just find. She needs to walk toward the questioner to make them squirm on camera.

stayoutofthespotlite   April 1st, 2008 4:12 pm ET

Chelsea you can not take the heat get out of the kitchen, blame your mother she is the one who put you in this situation for her own political ambition. This is a mother who stayed with your father so he can help her to be elected as the US president.

RLS   April 1st, 2008 4:12 pm ET

Edee   April 1st, 2008 4:12 pm ET

I believe that the American people wants to know about the Lewinsky/Clinton scandal, but however I do not feel that Chelsea is the right person to ask that sort of question to. Maybe they should as Bill & Hillary directly.

Pho   April 1st, 2008 4:11 pm ET

She is 28, not a 12-year old shy girl you remember her as. If she cannot confront the issues voters need to know, she has no business talking on the behalf of her mother.

David M. Manes   April 1st, 2008 4:06 pm ET

I am no Clinton supporter, but I do think it is unfair that these questions are getting so much media attention. It is incredibly irrelevant to ask a candidate's daughter about the candidate's husband and his sexual philanderings in the past. What possible interest could a potential voter have in asking that kind of question to Chelsea Clinton? None.

Gorefan   April 1st, 2008 4:06 pm ET

Instead of asking about Monica Lewinsky , shouldn't the question to Chelsea be, "Back in December, when your mother started talking about being under sniperfire with you in Bosnia, why didn't you stop her from continuing to repeat a story that what was obviously untrue?"
