Pelosi calls on Bush to boycott Olympic opening ceremonies

President Bush and U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have both criticized China's record on human rights.
President Bush and U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have both criticized China's record on human rights.

(CNN) - U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says President Bush should consider boycotting the opening ceremony of the Olympics Games in Beijing this summer to protest China's human rights record.

"I think boycotting the opening ceremony, which really gives respect to the Chinese government, is something that should be kept on the table," Pelosi told "Good Morning America" co-anchor Robin Roberts in an interview to air Tuesday morning, according to the ABC News Web site. "I think the president might want to rethink this later, depending on what other heads of state do."

Pelosi said she does not think U.S. athletes should boycott the games themselves.

I think Pelosi just needs to shut up.

As for the Obamabots who keep thinking it's OK to ask Chelsea personal questions re: her parents, I think it would be a great idea if someone asked Barack why his daddy deserted his mama, and how he felt about that.

Bush will never do anything to anger the Chinese, in the same way that he won't do anything against the Saudis, even though it was their people that flew the planes into the Twin Towers.

It's a decent idea, but since when does Bush care "what other heads of state do?"

Just the opening ceremonies? We should boycott the entire thing. First there is the issue of ongoing oppression of Tibetans then there is the poisonous toy manufacturing problem, and finally, there is the fact that the air is so severely polluted that it will affect the athletes' breathing and performances. Why are we participating at all? I say move it or lose it. The athletes who have trained and worked for their dream deserve to compete, but not at a risk to their health.

This is meaningless babble. Pelosi should be acting to bring charges of War Crimes against Bush and Cheney Inc.

I find this a bit hypocritical. Let's miss a ceremony because we find China to be out of line with human rights, but let's continue to support their economy, which is only upheld by the abuse of those same human rights. Vicious circle that no administration has worked hard enough to cut off.

Ummm yeah thats not such a good idea considering the fact that we owe the Chinese a enormous amount of money.... If we think we in a financial crisis now hate to think what will happen when China wants its money back....

I don't think the US should go to these Olympics. We have tried hard on all other fronts, political and economical to reach the Chinese. They are still enslaving their people, as well as neighboring countries like Tibet. We won't recognize Cuba, so why would the President go to the Olympics and by his mere presence show his support....and ours. Stay home George!

Not to mention to show that we are serious about Global Warming. Though I think Pelosi would suffer electorially to stand against the Chinese given her constituency.

The Unitied States is in debt up to it's ears to China. If Bush boycotts the Olympics China may decide to foreclose on the US and put it up for auction.

She wants Bush to boycott the opening ceremonies. But it's OK, for the American athletes to participate??? What's the point of Bush boycotting?
Stupid. No wonder she can't get anything done in Congress. She makes no sense.

The Olympics should never be boycotted by any country. The olympics is the best advertisement for what is good in this world.

Get with it, Nancy! We are on the Dark Side now. The US government doesn't care about human rights anymore, which is why we are allowed to torture and deny people the right to habeas corpus.

Instead of working to get China to join us on the Bright Side, we find it easier and more convenient to move to them. After all, the Chinese model of "free-market" capitalism under a totalitarian government is a very appealing direction for the Bushies.

If Bush had a brain, which we all know he doesn't he will NOT go to the olympic game. But, we know Bush is just so out of touch, that he doesn't get it. Why don't we just give China the KEY to America and let them do whatever the hell they want, we've already given them everything else. YOU can't go anywhere or buy anything that doesn't have a MADE IN CHINA stamp on it. Geeeez....what ever happened to the MADE IN THE USA worker!!!

Kinda like someone else who keeps putting her daughter on the stump and then when she gets asked certain questions all of a sudden everyone is in an uproar stating "how dare they bring this issue up!" ha! ha! What a load of crap!!

Bush needs to just stop with his stupid antics. Enough already.

Bush is not fit to go anywhere. He needs to stay here until his time is up to leave the White House. He earned a bad name around the world – fair and square. There are many here in the United States who have no respect left for him.
