CHICAGO (AP) — Thousands have gathered at a Chicago church to honor the Reverend Jeremiah Wright, the former pastor who's been at the center of a media storm since snippets of his sermons showed him denouncing America for allegedly racist and genocidal acts.

Wright was honored at Trinity United Church of Christ, where he still serves as senior pastor. Barack Obama is a member of that church. After Wright's comments, Obama sharply condemned some of the remarks but didn't leave the church or repudidate the minister himself.

At last night's ceremony, friends and colleagues called Wright a hero who has "fought the fight." He didn't speak during the
two-hour service. He hasn't spoken publicly since the controversy over his sermons started.

Who cares….hes a racist jerk…..I am using this post to honor Geraldine Ferraro for all the good she has done in her works. Sounds funny when its the reverse huh. ….. thoguht so

Oh my, when racists gather…

California Voter   April 1st, 2008 11:41 am ET

Rev. Wright aside, Obama remains a member of a racist church. Go to the TUCC website and make your own decision. Racism is bad where ever it comes from and I for one cannot support a candidate who exhibits the poor judgment of belonging to such a church for 20 years.

Where is Michelle Obama hiding?

VOTER FOR TRUTH, DIGNITY-OBAMA/EDWARDS 2008   April 1st, 2008 11:43 am ET

Yea!!!! Rev, Wright's church has 8,000 members. Got a standing
ovation at St. Sabrina's Roman Catholic Church last Fri.
The Reverend Wright can't be all that bad. Has some "ver reputable people in his church.Any good reporting
for CNN? because Fox wants to control minds.

Retired Professional White Woman of 63 dfor Obama from Day 1.

Oh! The Irony   April 1st, 2008 11:44 am ET

Is Rev. Wright on the ballot? Oh, so why does he remain in the political ticker consistently? His 15 mins. is up. Please find us some real news CNN, like 50 Cent no longer supporting Clinton. Now that was political reporting at its best.

Anyone but a Republican   April 1st, 2008 11:45 am ET

Let he who is without sin through the first stone.

I certainly wouldn't want my life judged by a 20 second soundbite of the most stupid or offensive things I've ever said.

JA Cook   April 1st, 2008 11:46 am ET

This whole issue has been more about us than it has been about Reverend Wright.

There are many among us who simply refuse to hear what others are saying, or deliberately push their own interpretation for the sake of creating division.

This election has given us a rare opportunity to rise to a new level as a nation.

It's all about our ability to practice what we as a nation preach about tolerance and freedom. It's time for us to show if we really can rise above differences in race, religion, gender and anything else that is not common to us all. Then and only then have we really started to realize the dream of our founding fathers and created a great and open minded nation.

glhf   April 1st, 2008 11:46 am ET

Good for him! He's been unfairly attacked and smearly by the media. I'd sue for slander if I was him.

All I can do is laugh   April 1st, 2008 11:46 am ET

…eh? Didn't he speak at some function honoring Maya Angelou?

I can't believe people are honoring this guy. Seriously.

Seth   April 1st, 2008 11:47 am ET

Must be an awfully slow news day. Nothing to write about Obama himself, so are now reporting on the whereabouts of his ex-pastor?

How about you give us a comprehensive breakdown of the differences in policy between Obama and Hillary (there are few, but still they are important nonetheless) instead of this inconsequential stuff. Or perhaps one of another thousand things I can think of that are more helpful and newsworthy than this.

Johnny C.   April 1st, 2008 11:48 am ET

Obama has managed to take race relations back 50 years!

Black America unite and show the democrats we are tired of their oppression!!

Black-Americans for McCain '08!!

Gail   April 1st, 2008 11:51 am ET

I don't understand what he would be honored for. Getting people stirred up perhaps? Keeping the hatred going?

Larry Buchas   April 1st, 2008 11:51 am ET

This story will not end until more of his good side is featured.

There's good and bad with everybody. The racism has to go away.

Independant   April 1st, 2008 11:52 am ET

I`m a 64 year old southern white boy ( nuf said). I think Rev. Wright has a right to his views and from what I have read think he`s getting a "bad rap". We both remember what it was like in the 50`s and 60`s. And I understand where he`s coming from !!!! He served in the military and didn`t run off to Canada like so many , both black and white. —- He is first of all a Christian who thru fate is also an American. ——–We as Americans can do better, whether Black, White, Yellow or Brown. ——- Lay off this man.

Lostfigs   April 1st, 2008 11:54 am ET

Obama will be in attendance of the Honors in Trinity Church?
Doesn't he know any better?

Paul   April 1st, 2008 11:55 am ET

Talk about hate filled church and Obama defending Wright, lets not forget all the clips, the one's you can not take out of context, i.e. If Hillary were…, Bill doing Monica and Wright calling Italians nasty names. Wright and the new pastor as well as the church is a hate filled place devoted to the radical AA.

Do we really want a President that defends suhc a place or his wife Michelle who just "loves" America, read her thesis and you will see how hatefilled she is.

taxpayer   April 1st, 2008 11:55 am ET

Rev Wright never did anything that led to the loss of thousands of brave American lives.

George W Bush did, and he couldn't have had his way without being enabled by members of Congress like Hillary Clinton who proudly voted to authorize his reckless war.

April in Texas   April 1st, 2008 11:56 am ET

I would like to start off that I am a 39 yr /old white female. I voted for Obama and even caucused for him in Texas. I have visited several different churches as well as denominations. While Wrights comments were offensive as all have agreed they were, they are not really viewed in that way to others. There is a large difference between how one takes these as in the full sermons of some of those derogatory comments. The truth is those that are offended alot of times are more racially divided. As I was told as a child "Sticks and stones can break my bones but words will never hurt me" I may be unusual but I am never offended by slurs such as typical white woman or cracker or whitey. Racisim is a two way street its one the speaker and one the recipient. I hope you get what I am saying and if not thats ok too. I know I tried and thats all I can do as an individual. I do wish the media would let the wright controversy go as its only fueling those who sadly are racisist. The pastor that brought me to christianity and married my husband and myself was after the fact determined to have been comitting adultry for years. While I dont agree with his actions I am still thankful every day he brought me to christanity. I can see why Obama is conflicted. Most people attend church for the congregation and not just because of the preacher after all we all are human and shouldnt judge so quickly especially christians. Now can this get dropped please after all ENOUGH is ENOUGH.

CNN, is there not enough other news out there to report on? Do you read your own blogs? Let it go! The people are begging you to. You’re losing thousands of viewers.

Focus on Hillary's Lies and Negative campaign and how she is trying to bring down the DNC.

Hillary for McCain's VP! She can join in with Lieberman.

Hillary 08   April 1st, 2008 11:57 am ET

You will not hear from him till this race of over, Obama will make sure of that. If we do, Obama will make sure of what is said first.

Shannon   April 1st, 2008 11:58 am ET

And if the video clips hadn't come out, Obama would be there giving a speech in his honor!

looney   April 1st, 2008 11:59 am ET

I can't believe it!!!

They are actually admitting that it was "snippets" of many sermons.

To deliberately try to ruin the reputation of a "Man of God" must carry some major pennance!!

I forgot, God forgives all!

Oh Well...   April 1st, 2008 12:00 pm ET

Here we go again. This man served his country in the armed forces under Johnson. He has been there for several misfortunate people in need. He has served his area for decades. All we want to talk about are the sound bites, that are out of context by the way. I don't agree with what he said, in or out of context. However, I do agree with his right to say it. Until you walk in his shoes, you will never understand his message.

I have people in my life that say and feel things about other races and even this country that I don't agree with, and I am glad that I am judge for my beliefs and not their feelings.

Christina   April 1st, 2008 12:00 pm ET

Hmmm…"Wright was honored at Trinity United Church of Christ, where he still serves as senior pastor. Barack Obama is a member of that church. " Obama told the media that Wright retired….Obviously, that was a lie, just like when he told the media that he wasn't in church at the time Wright made those comments. Come on, people! Wright has a HISTORY of anti-American and racist comments! Obama has been going to that church for TWENTY YEARS and has mentioned how the church and Wright have profoundly affected his life. Really? How so? Instead of stopping Wright in his tracks and asking the "Christian Minister" to stop the hateful, unChristian rhetoric, Obama LISTENED to it for TWENTY YEARS. Wake up, people! Obama is not who he claims to be and will ruin the Democratic party and America, if he is elected.

Craig TX   April 1st, 2008 12:00 pm ET

Wow! I'm beginning to sense a huge racial divide in our country.

JR   April 1st, 2008 12:00 pm ET

Thats great, we have thousand of bigotted people praising a prejudiced man. I was actually voting for Obama, know if Clinton is out I will vote McCain.

Here is why, some of the Rev's church pamphlets have come to light were he says "Garlic Noses of Italians". He compares the Italians to be pagans and for the toture of Christ. Tell you what the Roman Empire was littered with Armies of all kinds of diveristy . Jews, Italians, Muslims, Asains, Egyptians and so on. For this name to single out Italians, well before the establishment of Roman Catholism or Christiananity is not only wrong, but hateful.

For Obama to claim his Grandmother is a "typical white person" and not speak more forcefully against the ideas of this man is in itself wrong. A pastor or preacher or reverand teaches us morals, guides are childrens beliefs and is one of the first places we learn how to interact with society. As a Roman Catholic Italian American I am utterly appauled by the Obama campaign.

Who cares???   April 1st, 2008 12:01 pm ET

Why not talking about the important issues? I guess CNN noting to wright about. What is going on in TX? Isn't it curious that we still don't know the actual official outcome of the TX caucus??? Come on guys we expect better!!!

Kentucky   April 1st, 2008 12:01 pm ET

When I think of Preacher Wright I see and hear him say "God Dam America" and whites are trash. He is no hero in my book but a hate filled racist out to make money by pretending to be a preacher. I hear his " church is building him a manison with a bar. Sounds like America has been pretty good to him.

Nicholas   April 1st, 2008 12:01 pm ET

It is ridiculous that CNN is still trying to push this story. How many articles have been written about the lies Clinton has told about Bosnia, N. Ireland, or NAFTA.

Stop trying to flame the racial flames CNN. If you have not noticed this tactic has not helped your candidate of choice.

Be fair not biased. Do your job.

Joe   April 1st, 2008 12:01 pm ET

I've known better black men who can speak the truth without so much anger, rage, and hatred. How sad to have someone who has a title of "reverend" and spews such hatred and affect so many people…yes, I realize bigotry still exists today, but it's people like him that keep it here! Shame on him! There are other ways to deal with bigotry…just ask Israel.

Madison , PA   April 1st, 2008 12:01 pm ET

American people + Blind. To be Honest I listened to Wright's sermon in full and Agree with many things. American foreign policy is very negative ; and this raise up our ennemies… Don't be only Blind patriotism, but think well about what we do abroad…

David   April 1st, 2008 12:02 pm ET

He is a man of God. No one is perfect.
Remember God said, Touch not my annointed and do my prophet no harm.
To them that want to do eveil to Wright, God will always fight for him.
No one can challange God, not even the president of America.

I like that Obama didn't condem the man, because Obama understand that Wright is God's annointed one.

DEANNA   April 1st, 2008 12:15 pm ET

INTERESTING THAT ALL THE SELF RIGHTEOUS WRIGHT HATERS WANT TO CALL HIM THE BAD GUY. HE NEVER THREATENED ANY ONE WITH DEATH. SO WHO IS REALLY THE RACIST HERE????

SAME OLD SAME OLD DOUBLE STANDARD…FROM WHITE AMERICA

Gail   April 1st, 2008 12:16 pm ET

Is Rev Wright running for President? Why does the media want to kepp fanning the flames of this story. Must be a slow news day.

Dems unite to beat McCain

Grif   April 1st, 2008 12:16 pm ET

It's 4:am in the morning! Obama's in the 'White House" , he just had the urge 3 minutes Earlier…. What will we do say's his Ms… Oh well just send up smoke signals…..
Maybe Mohamed is still awake..

Paul   April 1st, 2008 12:30 pm ET

Good for him. He is a good man whose anger got the best of him a few times. Ask John McCain, he can tell you how stupid things come out of your mouth when your anger get's the best of you.

Paul Lennon   April 1st, 2008 12:31 pm ET

I guess nobody got anything to say about this.
what a pitty

Susan   April 1st, 2008 12:32 pm ET

Just stop it already. We're past it, they're past it, why aren't you, CNN?

Joe   April 1st, 2008 12:33 pm ET

Obama should have been there, as he has been these past 20 years, lapping up the racism and distain for America of his spiritual advisor.

Nicholas Hussein   April 1st, 2008 12:34 pm ET

No comments on this piece?! How fickle Americans can be…after demonizing the man for weeks, it's refreshing to see some mention of positivity…

Anita   April 1st, 2008 12:37 pm ET

where are the comments

INDY PENDENT   April 1st, 2008 12:48 pm ET

You have a real winner in a friend there Mr. Obama.
You are who you surround yourself with.

Tim   April 1st, 2008 2:32 pm ET

People shouldn't comment if they haven't seen the whole sermon. Stop being sheeple and wake up.
