In his excellent recent article about the Clinton campaign, "The Long Defeat," in the New York Times (I think) David Brooks said in effect that the door is closing, and night is coming.

In today's excellent USA Today article, "Why the Democratic race could end in North Carolina," Susan Page provides statistics as follows: Pledged Delegates - Obama 1415, Clinton 1251, a difference of 164; total delegates available in all remaining state races are 666.

My analysis based on this data shows for Clinton to (just) catch up with Obama (not to defeat him, but just to catch up) she must defeat him on average by 24.6% in all remaining races!! For every state where Clinton's winning margin is less than 24.6%, her challenge becomes even greater!!

The door indeed is closing, and midnght in fact is very near.

I think Jimmy Carter is an honest and good person but he was a terrible President who had little experience, very poor judgment, and absolutely no ability to run anything so it doesn't surprised me he would support Obama. He never had the stomach necessary to make the really difficult decisions that a president has to make.

One thing that always sticks in my mind from the time he was elected is that I was speaking with a person at our office in the south and he said he was glad that Carter got elected. I asked if that meant he was a really good governor, the reply was "NO," but it will get him out of the state! I knew the country was in trouble then! Is Obama another Carter? I don't think so, I don't think Obama is honest or good hearted just a whole lot slicker!

A truly admirable and highly respected ex-president. The only truly outsider to be elected in the last 50-60 years. The "Beltway Boys" undermined him at every opportunity as he was the only one who refused to compromise his morals. This was the last REAL President.

Many posters here have called Pres. Carter one of the worst presidents in history. I cannot disagree strongly enough. I will admit that he may have been ineffectual as president, but that's because he is a decent man. To put Carter in the company of Filmore or Hoover is just plain ignorant. If you want to talk about "the worst president in history", one need look no farther than the current administration!

Carter was not a very good president, but he was a president nonetheless. This man is also very experienced, whether he did a good job in the White House or not. Hillary Clinton and all of her supporters make the claim that Obama has no experience (which is false, even though I will be the first to admit that he is not the most experienced candidate, John McCain is....), but yet these people who DO have experience are coming out one by one for Obama. There is just something about this man that turns these people on, just like Bill Richardson.

Whatever you think of Mr. Carter's presidency, he is the finest human being to hold the office in my lifetime, including JFK, and his life and dignity after his term in office shows it.

It therefore means something when President Carter gives his endorsement.

It is also worthwhile to compare Jimmy Carter's style and dignity to that of Bill Clinton's wallowing in the mud to get his wife elected!

Carter has never liked the Clintons. Bill Clinton got something Jimmy Carter never did -- a second term.

It's no surprise that he's all but endorsing Obama. When it comes right down to it, who cares who Jimmy Carter endorses? He is soooo irrelevant to today's world.

Carter, Kerry, Kennedy -- all elder superdelegates. Somehow it seems Bill belongs on this list. Could he already be planning his endorsement, maybe his people talking with the Obama people? It is the ultimate triangulation.

Whether you consider Carter a "the worse president" (I would disagree, Hoover, Nixon, Eisenhower, and I'm sure many many more would agree the current one is top of that list), the fact is he has been a tremendous post-president and embodies the qualities that most former president's look to become. I don't care who he endorses, as I don't care who anyone else does. I just want this over and done with. Let the Democrats get their nominee.

This should be a Demcrats dream year (bad economy, war casulaties, oil companies making big bucks while people are losing their homes). Keep it up Dems and we will have Bush, part IV (the Mc Bush years)

It doesn't matter to me who's endorsing whom at this point. This election has left a very bad taste. Obama wins the nomination, I will not vote in the general election.

Well Done, Jimmy!! One step closer to gettting Obama nominated and forcing many middle of the road Democrats, like myself, to vote for McCain!

Ugh....looks like Bush's third term because there is NO WAY Mr. Obama gets this guy's vote. Wake Up people!!

I am a HRC Supporter here in FL... But.
It is interesting to read these blogs as, faced with the inevitability of an Obama nomination, us the Clinton's supporters now have to blackmail with our votes and threaten that we will lose in November...

How about being positive and considering that if the Carters alike in the democratic party are wise enough to endorse one candidate,we can do the same and examine why and how we can still achieve victory in Nov. You know... Instead of fearmongering...
If he does win the nomination as it looks more and more to be headed towards now... Fair and Square... He deserves my vote and will get it this November.

Oh yeah, there is a great endorsement. I believe Carter may go down as one of our worst Presidents ever.

That's it - just figured out. He is throwing his support behind someone whom he figures can unseat him as the worst President ever.

Good Choice, Jimmy, the weak must stay together.

Why are Obama supporters asking Hillary to quit? Are you afraid that Obama might actually lose? She is only 1% behind Obama, WHY QUIT? Or you're asking her to quit because simply she's a woman? In 1988, Jesse Jackson took his hopeless campaign against winner Michael Dukakis all the way to the convention, often to great media praise. In 1980, Ted Kennedy carried his run against Jimmy Carter all the way to the convention, even though it was clear he had been routed. Even in 1960, Lyndon Johnson and Adlai Stevenson fought the "certain" nomination of John F. Kennedy all the way to the convention floor. HILLARY '08

I think it will be interesting to see if people's opinins stay the same come the fall.

My current vote order is: Obama, McCain, Clinton. I hear a lot of people with that order and a lot of people say Clinton, McCain, Obama.

I wonder how many people will keep those orders when Clinton or Obama are out. It is a bit strange since Clinton and Obama seem to have such similar policies. Is it the heat of the campaign or other reasons for the vote orders? My issue is that I think Clinton divides too much of the country. We need healing locally and abroad after the last guy in office...

It feels like Obama has finally gotten to the top of the hill and is starting to pick up speed as he goes downhill. As the PA race tightens, I picture the Clinton team driving themselves crazy trying to decide what mud to throw at Obama over the next couple weeks. The latest poll (PPP) at pollster.com actually shows Obama leading in PA. Howard Wolfson is whipping up the troops - c'mon guys, let's find something that will stick...

Why do people think Carter was a terrible president? Is it because they thought that the world would be better if we kept the current dependencies on foriegn oil? Yeah that's really worked out! Carter was ahead of his time, his programs are still the route solution we need in this country. He makes his decisions based on wisdom not popularity, that same careful wisdom will be an endorsement for Obama.

Not an endorsement anyone would want. Obama may however turn out to be an even bigger pacifist than this tool his. This is what happens when you don't have a draft and oblige citizens to serve a greater cause than themselves. Entitled, self-righteous, mamby-pambys. The Ol'Hilly Billy will only give more reason to those on the fence not to vote for Barry-Barack- Hussein-Obama.

oh yeah, all those rich hillary supporters threatining with money, obama can raise it on his own. what a concept, actually having people who bieve in you donating small amounts across the board.

Wait till hillarys real fund raising numbers come in, she has
no money cause it all came from a small group of ultra wealthy people and its all been spent. Then there is obama crushing the numbers every month.

Hillary and her supporters need to to away

You know, if the attitudes I see on here of many of the Obama supporters is indicative of the kind of people he attracts, then I am really disappointed. Some of you posters act like a bunch of spoiled little whiney bratty kids. But then... I was a delegate to the SD-10 Senatorial convention here in Texas last Saturday, and I saw it all over the place there (with over 7600 delegates & alternates in attendance). It is really sad to see grown people act like such childish dimwits.

Now-- it's Carter's priviledge to back whoever he chooses. Whether it's Obama or Clinton, it's his choice. That was pretty much what I read as being the response from the Clinton camp, too. End of story.

All OBAMA and CLINTON supporters who are planning to vote for McCain if their candidate is not the nominee should have to explain this to the Soldiers in IRAK, the spouse, children and friends of those who died IRAK...

They should also have to give and explaination to those who WILL DIE in consequence of this IMATURE IMPULSIVE DECISION.

Wether you want it or not, you ll be partly responsable, and you ll be an acomplice to G.BUSH.

Barack Obama IS Jimmy Carter. Two very weak people who have no experience whatsoever. A Carter endorsement means nothing, since The Carter Presidency was the worst in modern history.
Obama's Presidency ( if, by a miracle, he is even elected) will make the Carter years look like the Kennedy years.

Why are Americans even considering Senator Obama.
What am I missing?
Obama is just talk with no experience. He has a radical racial minister and is somewhat unpatriotic.
There is no way that Obama can win against McCain.
Maybe everyone on this blog is a Republican?

Endorsements don't mean anything to the Clinton campaign until they get one. I love how rules, significance and everything else changes when it comes to the Clintons. I, like many, have lost all respect for Senator Clinton and will have a hard time casting my vote for her in the general election.

I would love to see Senator Clinton and tell her a few things.

1. Don't count your chickens before they hatch.
2. Bill Clinton would not be my husband.
3. Rocky lost!

With all due respect to President Carter and the other losing liberals who endorsed Obama (Kennedy, Kerry, Dodd, Leahy) Obama is going to go down in flames in a general election. I heard Tim Russert this morning suggest that Obama could peel off Virginia to get the magic 270 in a GE. Wishful thinking. Hillary does have a chance at peeling off Arkansas. Democrats need to start thinking pragmatically like Republicans, and for once, stop acting like spoiled, self-centered children. How can Obama unite and heal the country when he has bitterly divided the Democrats? Face it, the spark is gone and that's all he ever had to offer.

This should wake you Clinton supporters and see that Obama is the person to back. Everybody is tired of the Clinton's lies and old crooked polotics. I am very happy that President Carter is backing Obama and I hope Gore and Edwards will follow.

Response to Lady in MN

1. Hillary's tax returns will give us an indication of where she got the 5 million dollars to loan to her campaign. Was it her personal funds or did in come from donators of the Clinton library, who are remain anonymous. As for the Wright controversy, 3 outrageous messages out of 1,140 traditional messages over a 20 year period hardly makes Obama seem like the monster the Hillary supporters try to make him out to be.

At 1 outrageous message per year, that would leave you with 17 years of traditional sermons, so I'm confused about the sitting in the church for 20 years comment.

2. Your stuck in tradition. If anything you should have realized by now is that Obama in re-writing how you win the presidency. Look at all the new voters nationwide that have been participating in the election process this year. And yes, a lot of it has to do with Obama. So while tradionally the presidency has depended on winning those states, this year Obama is forging a new path.

3. Whats not to like about Obama? If Hillary didn't have so much baggage, then I'm sure they would show her more love.
