McCain’s fundraising totals trail those of both his potential opponents.
McCain’s fundraising totals trail those of both his potential opponents.

(CNN) - A senior McCain adviser tells CNN that the campaign’s March fundraising numbers will be “better than they usually are for us, but not competitive with Obama.”

McCain spent much of his time in March raising money. His schedule was largely dictated by fundraisers all over the country. With the exception of his week abroad, McCain on average held a fundraiser a day, and sometimes two.

In February, McCain raised $11 million dollars, far less than Barack Obama’s $55 million, and Hillary Clinton’s $35 million.

Campaign spokeswoman Jill Hazelbaker also tells CNN McCain raised more in March than February, but said they won’t release the figure until later this month.

Trying to look on the bright side, the senior McCain adviser said that although the campaign behind others in fundraising, starting late last month the Republican National Committee has been able to raise money through a victory fund, which can directly benefit the campaign. The RNC can raise up to $28,500 per person, as opposed to just $2300 per person for an individual campaign.

There have been several newspaper reports this week about McCain’s fundraising troubles, attributed to lack of enthusiasm from some of President Bush’s high roller donors, and overall fundraising fatigue.

CNN asked McCain on his bus Wednesday about those reports, and he said he was “puzzled” by them.

“Ever major fundraiser, and we could I guess provide you a list, that I know of that I have called and that Rudy [Giuliani] has called and that Mitt [Romney] has called has called to say fine, I am with you, “ said McCain.

“Our fundraising, our fundraisers have dramatically increased so I don’t know where all of that comes from to be honest with you,” he said

Apparently this guy knows how to run a campaign if he can become the nominee without spending the millions of dollars the democrats need to in order to get nowhere!

Richard, St. Paul, MN   April 3rd, 2008 8:09 pm ET

Why hasn't Hillary disclosed her tax records yet? She's been promising that "... they'll be released next week..." for at least three months. What is she hiding? She's in second place and her 'entitled' attitude only makes me want to vomit. McCain is a joke. His policies are cheap copies of the failed policies of idiot Bush, so he's not even fit for duty, in my opinion. At this point, Obama is the only one who seems to have a shred of honesty and decency. And for those who claim that 'he doesn't have the experience'.... look at the debacle that 'experience' has brought us to: a $10 trillion deficit, a 50% increase in the budget, a $3 trillion war, a worthless dollar, an economy that's in the toilet, record setting earmarks, and 4,000 dead soldiers. Experience...?... Bah! ... Humbug!

"Not competitive with Obama."
There's a sound bite!

I bet the money will show in the fall! I know he may get some from me if NObama is the nominee!

OBAMA IS GETTING SO MUCH MONEY.....

IS IT BECAUSE OF MOVE ON ORG ?????????????

unbiased   April 3rd, 2008 6:57 pm ET

The amount of money raised by Dems is phenomenal and that is really good. The party is energised. But with all the money raised, it doesnt give a clue why it should be a great advantage. Anyway, people will already have made their minds. It is Independents that have to be bombarded with Ads, phone calls or door-to-door campaign. It is all about convincing the moderates and independents. But people are already getting turned off by the way Dems primaries are going and more and more is revealed about the Obama which is good. The GOP will not be soft towards once the general campaign starts. I am already seeing the kind of articles that Fox News and WashingtonTimes are excavating about Obama. But you guys here anyway will not see them here or in other MSM outlets. But they are already laying the ground. Watch out!!!

Hermione   April 3rd, 2008 6:56 pm ET

HILDA – Wow, I am even more sad at what's happening in this country when people like you are brainwashed to the point of blindly following a child into the white house. Don't make it seem like the rest of us are ignorant for wanting someone other than a whiny-baby hypocrite as our president. I keep hearing "jump on the Obama train"...and that's exactly what it is. A train full of hot air and fantastical ideas like "hope" and "change" on which he cannot possibly follow through.

I will never vote Obama.

HILLARY '08

tisha   April 3rd, 2008 6:42 pm ET

What I am confused about is if your a democrat and you want Hillary as the nominee but she doesn't get it how as a democrat you could say that you would vote for Republican John McCain, that is the most ridiculous thing I ever heard of. I guess it means that like Hillary you really don't want to do what is best for the Democratic party.

Grif   April 3rd, 2008 6:37 pm ET

Don't, Get Bitter! Towards John McCain you people.
Just get Fitter. Maybe you will be called on one day..

all these people need to look way past race and look to what the candidates say and did.

Mccain – gonna be a long haul in iraq

Billary – voted YES on the iraq war, all the lies

Obama – good judgement, a candidate of serious change

the only way people get experience is by learning and acting on it, can you guys please get that in your heads!
HILLARY = 35YRS OF POLITICS = 35 YRS OF POLITICAL LYING
mccain – bush's apprentice

peter   April 3rd, 2008 6:28 pm ET

First off doesn't everyone realize obama needs to raise all this money cause he is spending like a fiend. He has to pay out at least twice as more as Hillary just to stay ahead. McCain is steadily getting money and wait he is barely spending any because he is done fighting for now. So as McCain pools and saves obama brings in and spends. By the time of the general election I wonder how much more money obama fans will have left to give. Personally I am going to save for the next few months and give to McCain when he actually needs it. Glad to see so many are hurting in this economy!

Chuky   April 3rd, 2008 6:27 pm ET

The message in McCains tour is clear.

He has served America well and Americans owe him apreciation.

Just like Hillary feels she deserves to be gratified for her husbands expedient tenure in the white house.

What they seem to forget is that the American precidency is not a RENUMERATION PACKAGE! It is a job that require someone with zeal and better stiil, NO STAKES so we can hold him/her accountable

Not people that will be self-justified to do anything just because they had PAID THEIR DUES EARLIER.

That is why Obama is better positioned for the job now. There will be no sentiment in appraising him.

Ian   April 3rd, 2008 6:25 pm ET

deCasa, welcome to the political ticker. Most people seem to be interested in who looks the most presidential, instead of looking at things like their voting record, and previous scandals/legal trouble. Never mind the fact that the dollar is losing value every day and only one candidate will address the issue head on. Most people seem to be concerned about what they are entitled to, rather than voting responsibly.

I am on your side, but unfortunately we are the few. It will be most frustrating when things really start crashing, and most people will point their fingers at elected officials. The very people they helped elect.

Sad.

TheLeftNut   April 3rd, 2008 6:22 pm ET

Are we there yet?

Jenn   April 3rd, 2008 6:14 pm ET

McCain is already the Republican nominee. Wouldn't it be silly to start donating all of our money now? We're going to wait until the general election and THEN start donating big, because that's when it will matter.

Gnosticman   April 3rd, 2008 6:13 pm ET

All you people that are saying that Obama doesn't have a chance against McCain are living in a different country than me, or maybe just a delusional state of mind. If Obama outperforms McCain in all the states where he had more voters than McCain, then Obama will win not only the majority of the states, but also all the biggest states. LOOK AT THE PRIMARY NUMBERS, they are far more representative of America than these stupid polls. Obama has a MUCH LARGER turnout in the vast majority of all the states vs. McCain! As for Independent appeal, Obama wins hands down because of his position on the war. No independent in their right mind would vote for a pro-Iraq war candidate! So everybody stop talking out of your defacator in regaurds to Obama's electability.

Patty Atlanta GA   April 3rd, 2008 6:00 pm ET

McCain and Cindy the druggy are the biggest liars and theives in America!

demo craxy   April 3rd, 2008 5:58 pm ET

he needs not to worry, Hillary has destroyed the party, the democrats will hand him the nomination. you have read it here, billary's supporters will not vote for Obama and rather vote for McCain, and Obama's supporters will not vote for Billary, they will rather vote McCain, SO
nothing to worry about...........

thanks Billarys

Venus   April 3rd, 2008 5:58 pm ET

Don't worry McCain! Some of Hillarys supporters who claim they won't vote for Obama will be sending you some money!

Jesse   April 3rd, 2008 5:55 pm ET

Obama is a liar.Only you who are naives who think he is a saint. There lots of things on him that mostly he lied about on the internet. Please go and investigate your beloved candidate and please dont try to brain washed on any of us.We will choose a good candidate comes November. And please bear in mind that nobody is perfect nobody unless of course he's a GOd.And Im not anti-christian just making an observation.Thats make you a liar too if you said Obama is honest.

Bob Stephens   April 3rd, 2008 5:43 pm ET

McCain, I think you need to take some of the money you get and take some mood stabilizing drugs for your hot temper. I can't wait to see you in a debate, when asked a hard question, start swearing at your opponent.

HomoSapien   April 3rd, 2008 5:42 pm ET

Hey GoMcCain – it's nice to realize that blacks actually have an ADVANTAGE in this country!

For some reason I always thought that if you were black you would never be able to do as well as a white person. Because your skin color was a DISADVANTAGE. But obviously I was completely mistaken about that and I apologize for my ignorance!

Obviously Obama's strongest point is his skin color. Because, after all, haven't all our Presidents been black up until now?? No??

Oh, it must be Senators then...a majority must be black?? Huh?? No again??

OH I am sorry, I meant Governors. No?? CEOs. No?? Rich people. No?? Advantaged race. No??

Ummmm......OK, I am getting very confused now...did you say Obama had an advantage in fundraising because of his black skin color??

mary   April 3rd, 2008 5:37 pm ET

People keep complaining about the price of gasoline, food, clothing, home mortgages, jobs, etc. how can they afford to send money to these campaigns? Obama said most of the $40 million raise in March was from small donors, apparently people are not hurting for money. Obama wants to help people with home mortgages, WHY?, THEY have EXTRA money to send to him, they don't need government help!

deCasa   April 3rd, 2008 5:27 pm ET

I'm not a politician but I am a citizen and a thinker so excuse the ignorance of this question....

Shouldn't we be trying to find the BEST leader with the best credentials and character instead of the best fund raiser?

Unless we're going to transform the American Presidency into an office that will fund raise for our individual monetary gain, maybe we shouldn't put so much focus on the amount of money these people raise. After all, isn't the flaunt of money what corrupts anyway?

Bill, Covington   April 3rd, 2008 5:27 pm ET

How many times or what % of the people elected to the office of president has been the person with the most money?

CHERYL   April 3rd, 2008 5:25 pm ET

Anita   April 3rd, 2008 5:16 pm ET

If the GOP doesn't get off their duffs, then McCain will sink on the money front. "Cindy's family money" is just that.

Tyrone Brown, Seattle, WA   April 3rd, 2008 5:00 pm ET

The real news is that most of the money Barack raised has been from first-time and small donors. Barack Obama is the "People's Candidate" and the success of / enthusiasm for his campaign reflects. I understand the lackluster support McCain and the need to depend on the coffers of the RNC and large donors...the American people are focused on the "brighter and future" possibilities of an Obama Presidency and not the "cynical and past-tense" one the Republican candidate so clearly represents.

Brian   April 3rd, 2008 4:58 pm ET

Get used to being "not competitive with Obama" on all accounts, Sen. McCain. You're a good man, but we don't need another four years of George W. Bush politics in this country.

OBAMA '08!!!

hilda   April 3rd, 2008 4:58 pm ET

Iam very sad with what is happening to this country.Only one candidate can make changes tin this country, that person is Barack Obama..He is honest, inteligent, can motivate people to be involve in these changes. He believes in communication with the international community and believes in the young people.Hilary will be more of the same.Yes we can.

Frantz (Atlanta)   April 3rd, 2008 4:53 pm ET

McCain is not worrying about fund raising. His trophy wife got plenty of money.

mp   April 3rd, 2008 4:52 pm ET

Brian   April 3rd, 2008 4:50 pm ET

Chuck, TN   April 3rd, 2008 4:44 pm ET

Sounds like Big Mac has some money problems.

Mufaddal   April 3rd, 2008 4:39 pm ET

We all respect McCain for his service to this country, but this is certainly not the time for him to run for a president. We have had 8 MISERABLE years with Bush, and our economy has reached its edge (recession), and if McCain is elected to the office whic i higly doubt, we are going to have another 4 MISERABLE years and we will probably end up in DEPRESSION....McCain has NOTHING TO OFFER....he stands no chance competing with OBAMA....unless he reads his speeches and debates from the tv.....
OBAMA '08!!!!

As the elections grow closer...contributions will change to McCains's campaign.

Once conservatives realize that Obama is the DEM candidate–they'll pay through their noses to keep us from de-evolving into a marxist-style socialist state.

You have the Right Programs, now you have to convince the Media...

Go John... Give it to them!!! Your surrounded with just has much, Digits.,.....

As Obama the Fidget.

Lobbyist money !!!
He can't raise the same amount of money as Obama and Hillary online, it's impossible !

Paul   April 3rd, 2008 4:27 pm ET

Where are all the Rebulican loud mouths. I guess they don't put their money where there mouths are. I sure do hear them on the attack of smearing and name calling. Just like the Reverend Wright non-story that media blew way out of proportion. They will smear and run. And these people call themselves Christians.

I can almost guarantee you, if I go into any Christian church and take the 5 or 6 worst things that came out of their preacher in the last 10 years many would make Trinity look minor. All you so called Christian hypocrites who are attacking Obama over this, go worry about your own faith because attacking like this is Anti-Christian.

GO McCAIN   April 3rd, 2008 4:26 pm ET

Unfortunately, he probably won't raise as much money as Obama because he is not black.

Ronald   April 3rd, 2008 4:26 pm ET

I would trust what McCain says about his campaign's ability to raise cash. Now, Hillary on the other hand, is a liar and can't be trusted.

sam   April 3rd, 2008 4:24 pm ET

You don't need to compete with McCain. If Hillary losses the demoratic candidate, I am not voting for Obama. So, you have my vote along with other democratic Anti-Obama.
