Barack Obama's campaign announced a March haul of more than $40 million, raised from more than 442,000 donors. There were more than 218,000 first-time donors, and the average contribution level was $96.

The figure is not official until the campaign submits paperwork with the Federal Election Commission. The official deadline for March paperwork to be filed is April 20.

The Obama campaign released the announcement the moment the daily Clinton campaign conference call began.

Wake up   April 3rd, 2008 1:53 pm ET

where is all this money coming from. i thought there were limits on how much one can donate. if our economy is in such a dither and people are losing their homes, and Katrina is still waiting, floods and tornados are happening more and more and food and gas prices are outrageous, and they're worried about war spending and the high cost, and social security, etc. WHERE IS ALL THIS MONEY COMING FROM????? Once again the people of America are getting screwed, with no health care, no money to pay mortgages, can't get to work because of gas gouging. The rich get richer by the minute, and we support them. Wake up!!!!! This SUCKS!!!!

Charlotte   April 3rd, 2008 1:52 pm ET

You would think with Obama out spending Clinton 4 to 1 he would be way ahead, guess money can't buy everything. I have every confidence in Hillary, none in Obama. I will write in her name rather then vote for Obama, or McCain. Unless we can get a major movement going, McCain will be the next President. I know a lot of people who will do the same. Unless we can get every Clinton supporter to go along, McCain will benefit from such action, but oh well, at least he won't be an empty suit. We lasted 8 years we can last another 4. Michelle said, she won't go through this again. Obama gets his directions from her, so I'm counting on it.

Pete   April 3rd, 2008 1:52 pm ET

218,000 first time donors?!?!? That's amazing. It's great to see so many people interested. The Clinton's probably disagree though.

I-Care   April 3rd, 2008 1:52 pm ET

This man is just what America needs. I hope the Dems will stick together and vote for him in November.

voter   April 3rd, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Hillary as the leader of her own campaign has not had the foresight to plan for a long battle. How does she expect to lead this country when her own campaign is not running smoothly? Pay your bills. Let's see your tax returns. Bill can speak and make the money to pay the high school in ILL.

Clinton now Obama   April 3rd, 2008 1:51 pm ET

Small donations do count. Everytime there is a negative ad from the CLinton camp, I donate again. Did anyone see the college bowl with Obama in West Chester PA, GREAT. The young people were engaged and not "star struck" they really asked thoughtful, important questions and Obama was a breathe of fresh air for a politican. Why won't Hillary meet with the students? Even John Mccain is addressing the students in a college bowl in PA. Remember this is HILLARY's state. Open your ears Senator Clinton, PA has it's own voice and you may not like what it's saying, regardless of Rendell and the mayor in your camp. Americans are tired of the Same, we want CHANGE>

For a guy who has Hillary, Bill, Chelsea, and McCain campaigning against him along with the media attacking his pastor and wife with 10 second sound-bites, Obama is doing incredibly well in this campaign.
I'm so surprised how softball the media has been on Hillary. So far they only briefly mention her over exaggeration of her foreign experience or how she neglects to pay the bills, so far not a single word on the 20+ scandals she had to go to court over.

CNN - this is not a sporting event, we don't need an inning by inning report on hits, runs, errors, etc (money raised).

considering it has to be reported to the FEC, that automatically makes it newsworthy.

Truly amazing. OBAMA '08 and '12!!

Morgan — get your facts straight, there are limits to campaign contributions and Obama does not take any lobbyist or PAC money. You can request a list of his donors from his campaign if you want to see it. His contributors are normal people, whose contributions are less than $100.

200,000+ NEW donors, on top of the 1 million mark he hit in mid-March? So he's got to be around 1.5 million unique donors by now, eh? So much for relying on maxed-out millionaires, Hillary! This college graduate is helping fund Obama $15 at a time, and I'm glad to see he's using it wisely!

Mary Sue   April 3rd, 2008 11:15 am ET

Wow. This is impressive, especially given the hit Obama took with that horrible Rev. Wright and the fact that it looked like he only won one state in March. (Yesterday, we finally learned he'd won more delegates than Hillary in Texas, so I guess we can say he won two states on March 4th.)

I hope the superdelegates are watching this closely. Obama is bringing new voters and new money to the Democratic party. The superdelegates should be cautious about alienating them. The superdelegates should support the candidate with the most delegates, the most states won, the most popular votes AND the most money.

(P.S. Why don't my posts appear?)

Read his book……. wake up b4 its 2 late.

EA Portland OR   April 3rd, 2008 11:13 am ET

One thing I have noticed, Clinton supporters are much more venomous and mean spirited in their comments than Obama supporters.
This could be attributed to a couple of reasons; either they know they cant win and their sore losers, sort of like Hill herself, or they are genuinely cranky old people who would rather just yell "GET OFF MY LAWN" and shake their arthritic fists at us than vote for a candidate under the age of 60.

I say to the Hillary supporters, be nice, it's "McBush" we all need to worry about.

Carl   April 3rd, 2008 11:13 am ET

Ill admit im routing for Hillary to be president, she is more experienced after all. However Obama has done really well in raising money, he is beating Hillary hands down and I think he will continue to do that, moeny wise anyway. I think with the average donation per person of $96 shows hes got the wealthiest supporters.

Notice how individuals are banding together to donate small amounts for Senator Obama. Even the small amounts add up on the grand scale. Also, it's worth noting that many, like myself, don't have a LOT to give, but believe Senator Obama is the best choice.

Similarly, why aren't the individuals who believe in Hillary Clinton stepping up to the plate? She sure wouldn't be in debt if that were the case, now, would she? And where, oh where have her big-purse donations disappeared to?!

Seems to me that the purses aren't as open as they used to be for her.

I've never donated to a political figure before Sen. Obama: after all, it isn't even tax deductible. That's how much the people of America are rallying around Obama. Impressive, to say the least!

Good job people.

Way to go baby…Guess all the Jeremiah Wright propanda paid off after all!

I have to admit, after all the comotion, it inspired me to support Senator Obama even more. He got my highest contribution to date of $200 after the media tried to crush him on this.

I'm glad to see that the far right wing critics didn't manage to scare people into abandoning Obama after all.

And another thing, why is Hillary claiming to have so much experience and can't even manage efficiently her own campaign? Everything that Obama produces, she always seems to have to postpone her deadline weeks or months later. This is all questionable to me…I don't know how people could support someone who seems to have little knowledge nor control over her finances.

He can only be getting this much money from big oil (which he stated that he will never accept donations from–lie lie lie) and from Oprah. I for one cannot understand where all the money is coming from. Some underhandedness going on here. I just love it how the news media is always praising Senator Obama. I know there has to be more positive comments regarding Senator Clinton, but CNN chooses comments. I wouldn't be surprised if they are contributors themselves

As I stated before, this man is so arrogant and his words mean nothing. Are you Obama supporters so wrapped up in his words that you are not thinking clearly? You really need to see the true picture of this man. If he becomes the nominee (which I really hope that HE DOES NOT), I will not vote for ANYONE. I am not so desperate to vote that I would throw away my vote for McCain.

Well, if rumors are true, the Clinton campaign raised less than $20 million in March.

In February's filings both campaigns showed they spent in excess of $20 million. Obama ended February with net cash of $33 million and Clinton $3 million after debt.

If that follows for March, the Obama campagins could be sitting with over $50 million in cash and Hillary's broke; although there have been rumors the Clinton campaign has $20 million in debt as of the end of March, so the next filings will be interesting to see.

Jay   April 3rd, 2008 10:56 am ET

Dick Morris suggested that Obama cut a deal with Hillary and ask his supporters to donate to Hillary's camp to help her payoff he debt, in the name of party unity. Well I do not know if I really want to do that. Well, I might change my mind if Obama say I should.

someone smiling in Texas   April 3rd, 2008 10:56 am ET

Juan Bowers   April 3rd, 2008 10:56 am ET

Hillary did a great job dividing the democrats because of her selfishness. If 40% of her supporters will not vote for Obama, does she expect that Obama supporters should vote for her. Democrats, lets use some common sense and stop behaving like spoiled babies. Someone is going to lose the nomination but we should stand behind the nominee regardless of the outcome. As things stand now, McCain should win no matter who is the nominee. This is just was the Reb wanted.

Jon - Obama 09? You're kinda missing the election if you wait until 09 to vote for him… :)

I'm surprised that Obama, being as liberal as he is, can garner that much support just because he's a good speaker.

Since no one knows that much about him, it's all because he SOUNDS good. That's a chancy thing, if you ask me.

I will go with someone with a proven track record.

Just shows how he runs his campaign and that he has good people working for him, which means he has good judgement in people. He is doing well and will do well as President of this United States. I am a proud 51 white male supporting Obama and have for over a year now. I think it is very important to put him in the whitehouse as I think he is the one that can make a difference in people's lives. He shows a good temperment, he has more pledged delegates, he has won more states, he has more of the popular vote, he does better in fundraising, He is gaining superdelegates, He is a very intelligent man, and will make the best president we have had in a long time.

Note to Hillary..

If you cannot manage your own campaign financially, then how can you expect to manage your country out of the Bush deficit.

That question remains to be answered

mike   April 3rd, 2008 10:53 am ET

I am so appalled by the lack of intelligence and civility on this site. The Clinton supporters need to get over their love for Hillary and look at the policy differences between their candidate and Obama compared to McCain. McCain is not even in the ballpark but because you are upset your candidate may lose the nomination, you will back McCain. That is just childish. Step back and look at the big picture. The Obama people also need to get off their high horse and stop this tit for tat stuff.

And CNN, I make comments on this site frequently and I have only seen one published. Yet you allow a moron like AJ to spew racist, vulgar comments and they get through. What are your criteria for publishing comments? I think it is irresponsible to put these kinds of comments on your site.

If Barry is as Good as all this bloggers and the millions of donors and Obama voters say he is - then why does he need any money at all.

He should do the Righteous thing and give all this money to Charity instead of to TV and Radio stations on what should be unneccesary publicity.

They all get all the free publicity they need from the media just by waking up in the morning!

And all John McCain is doing is smiling to see this much money being poured in to primaries when they should be saving this money to win the national election.

Obviously, the Obama supporters don't need any bailouts if they can continue to contribute like this. Wonder what they think they're going to get. I think they will be disappointed when someone else wins and will want their money back. Oh well, a fool and their money are soon parted, as the saying goes.

Hillary '08!
**********************************************************************
Are you kidding or what?!?! Hillary has not released her tax returns and I have a feeling she will renig prior to April 22nd primary. Last month, the Clinton camp rushed to get out the "good news" that her campaign raised $35 million in the month of March while Obama raised $55 million.

You would think with all the positive political coverage Obama has enjoyed over the past two weeks, i.e. numerous endorsements with some coming from high-profile superdelegates folks like Bill Richardson, coupled with pennslyvania polling showing Obama closing the gap between himself and Hillary, and national polling showing Obama sizably ahead of Hillary, Hillary's campaign would release the fundraising efforts for the month of March to silence a lot of talk that her campaign is financially struggling to keep a full out effort till July 1st.

SMH- Annapolis MD   April 3rd, 2008 10:48 am ET

If only we could get Americans to donate $40 million a month to more important causes like finding a cure for cancer, autism or alzheimer’s.
Vote for Obama or vote for McCain, nothing is going to change that drastically.

Kiki   April 3rd, 2008 10:48 am ET

Grif, are you serious they are campianing so that means you need money to do that. How can u be so nasty about Obama b/c he rise 40 millon dollars. You know when your mother said "If you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all". For once can we just look at both sides here. If you are running for president and people are giving you donations, are you going to refuse them? I guess you pay for out of your pockets! Just like Billary did. Don't hate congratulate.

To all the other haters on here saying he can not win. We will decide this in November. No matter what we need a Dem. in the white house!

Bigben, If you don't for Obama because Hillary lost the nomination, then you are just shallow minded and need not participate. The reason we are voting democratic is not because of Hillary or Obama, it is because of what the Republicans have done to the country. Look around and see the price of gas, the price of food, the war in Iraq,,, the world attitude towards America. That's why you should vote democratic. WAKE UP!

Toni   April 3rd, 2008 10:46 am ET

The story of Obama's broad base of small donors is unprecedented in American politics. The traditional pundits who come from political and media elite are mystified because average Americans (and not the "fat cats") are financing and driving a large-scale Presidential campaign month-after-month. This is a phenomenon of epic proportions and symbolizes what American democracy aspires to achieve. Average Americans, collectively, expressing their political voices and truly CHANGING the political establishment in the process.

Ed Gibbs   April 3rd, 2008 10:43 am ET

Mia   April 3rd, 2008 10:42 am ET

I really wish those making comments get their facts straight.

1) Each individual who contributes can ONLY give $2300 (Oprah gave that months ago) for the primary and $2300 for the general election

2) The so called Oil donations are from employees, people like me and you. When you donate they ask you to provide your company name and title, so implying that all this money comes from companies is bull. It is just normal citizens like you and me. For instance if I work for Lockheed, they (the media) can do a query on gov't contractors and then say he received $200,000 from gov't contractors - in fact he may have received $25.00 from 1 employee at Lockheed and $1000 from another employee, and they (the media) bunches it together and claim it is from a company. NOT TRUE

Companies in fact can ask their employees for donations and they in turn can donate it to a campaign as a Political Action Committee (PAC). Senator Obama does not accept money from PACs.

I hope that helps those of you who have not and don't participate in the political process other than your vote and these uninformed comments you place on blogs.

California Lady   April 3rd, 2008 10:40 am ET

Not only does he continue to raise impressive amounts of money from so many people who love him but, he runs a very impressive campaign.
He has not had tofire his top manager for mis-managing money, he does not get calls from vendors asking for their money months after the event, he makes sure his staff have HEALTH CARE because he pays his bills.
Looking at Hillary's crumbling and in-effective management of her campaign really makes me cringe at the though of how she would run the WH if she ever found a way to steel this election.
A very scary thought, not to mention the fact that we couldn't trust anything she said on any issue because we would never be sure how much sniper fire she was dodging.
Come on Pennsylvaina, you only have one choice and that choice is clear, get on the winning team, be a big part of history, be able to say after his win, "I voted for that guy" Vote for Obama and be a winner.

This ought to count for something…right?

By the way thanks to Fox news for helping Obama raise this kind of money. The reason I gave to his campaign was because of the unfair ongoing bashing of Obama on Fox news.

The real issues are economy, mortgage crisis, a war with no end in sight, jobless claims highest in 2 years, healthcare, a failing educational system.

A pastor of church that I had never even heard of before last month is the least of our worries!

Hank in PA   April 3rd, 2008 10:37 am ET

Money may purchase the democratic nod in the end, but it won't win in November. If anyone out there thinks the Repubs aren't going to hit Obama hard with his short stack, they are fooling themselves.

BTW — CLinton campaign had a pretty good month, and it took 2 to 1 advertising in Texas for Obama to get close — if the ad money was the same, CLinton would have won already. Obama has more wealthy supporters, but the people who really need a president are the ones who cannot afford to send in the big bucks.

A sad day for this country too hungry for leadership to see through a thin speech and empty smile.

Obama supporter in PA   April 3rd, 2008 10:37 am ET

This is an indication to the American people, this unknown candidate to most, when the campaigning started, is for real. Barack Obama continues to resonate inside of the American people hearts, and they are listening to his change from the norm. For one second, imagine if Hillary Clinton was Hillary Smith, who did not serve as 1st Lady. Would she have received the amount of support, which has kept her in this race up to this point? For an unknown senator who continues to break records in dollars given, in addition to the huge number of hopefuls attending his rallies is simply astonishing to say the least!

There's a little saying in finance that if you want to make money in the markets, watch what the majority of investors (lemmings, crowd followers, bandwagoners) are doing and then do the opposite. The reasoning is that the majority of people just follow the crowd without thinking. Such is the Obama campaign - The young and naive, the uninformed and the ostriches who hide their heads in the sand so they can't see the storm brewing on the November horizon for this guy.

with an economy as poor as ours, i have one question, where are all these donations coming from. This is something that should be available to the american people. We have Katrina that has never been repaired, many tornados this year where people lost everything, people everywhere are loosing their home, gas prices are gouging us and not to mention food prices. Something is not right here and eventually the people are going to be rioting. I'd hate to see this situation get worse. So, all you politicians who are earning millions monthly, how can this be. And NO i do not trust this current government, and many of those in congress. People are hurting badly in this powerful country and it should not be.

Carolyn   April 3rd, 2008 10:33 am ET

The fact that Barack Obama is continuing to raises money from hundreds of thousands of people every month shows the strength and intensity of his support. He is campaigning on behalf of the American people, and, in return, they are supporting him. His ability to raise money shows how frustrated individual Americans are that Washington politics and policy are dominated by corporate interests. When Barack Obama is President, the American people will have someone who cares about and listens to them!

Reader-of-Many-Sources   April 3rd, 2008 10:33 am ET

I proudly am one of the contributers to Barak Obama's campaign for the Presidency!

First time in my life that I have ever given money to a political campaign or person!

Since I heard a speech of his that inspired me profoundly (probably back in November) I have been contributing 100$ every month - except March - there I contributed the same amount twice.

For the first time I want a candidate to win…..

greenfun   April 3rd, 2008 10:32 am ET

Newsweek reports:

"In a new ad, Obama says, "I don't take money from oil companies."

Technically, that's true, since a law that has been on the books for more than a century prohibits corporations from giving money directly to any federal candidate. But that doesn't distinguish Obama from his rivals in the race.

We find the statement misleading, because:

Obama has accepted more than $213,000 from individuals who work for companies in the oil and gas industry and their spouses.

Two of Obama's bundlers are top executives at oil companies and are listed on his Web site as raising between $50,000 and $100,000 for the presidential hopeful."
