Reuters reports Edwards ruled out running as the vice presidential candidate.
Reuters reports Edwards ruled out running as the vice presidential candidate.

Former presidential candidate John Edwards said Thursday he will not accept the No. 2 spot on the Democratic presidential ticket, Reuters reports.

Edwards, who dropped out of the presidential race in January and has since remained neutral, said flatly "No" when asked by a reporter if he'd be willing to serve as the vice presidential candidate.

Edwards was the 2004 vice presidential nominee.

Who needs him....

JAMES IN BAMA   April 3rd, 2008 7:38 pm ET

HE SEES THE WRITTING ON THE WALL AND DOES NOT WANT TO BE ON THE LOOSING END OF AN EDWARDS/OBAMA TICKET. ITS A VERY SMART MOVE TO SAY THAT BEFORE THE CONVENTION. I JUST HOPE EVERYONE DIDNT SEE OBAMA FOR WHOM HE IS TO LATE! NO MALCOME X JR. WITH A SILVER TOUNGE FOR ME.

jd   April 3rd, 2008 7:20 pm ET

Oh please John Edwards, please reconsider. You would make a great Vice President. I believe in you.

Maxine   April 3rd, 2008 7:20 pm ET

Edwards is sitting it out until the convention. He has a plan.

Darren Davis   April 3rd, 2008 7:17 pm ET

I'm starting not to like this dude.

Pier Giacalone   April 3rd, 2008 7:17 pm ET

Aw gee, and he was so good in 2004 too. Remember when Cheney spanked him like the inexperienced child he was?

A small reminder – Edwards was a fluke one-term Senator who's only distinguishing achievement was in getting Clinton off the hook for lying about Monica in the Senate.

He didn't get interested in "poverty" until he had already lost in 2004 and realized he needed some reason for people to vote for him in 2008. Too bad it wasn't enough to make up for the fact that he doesn't begin to be qualified to be President (which of course includes Vice President) and it seems to me we have two clear cases of the voters telling him so.

If Kerry had never picked him in 2004 no one would even remember his name.

Jason   April 3rd, 2008 7:16 pm ET

Which begs the question, why do we care about John Edwards in regards to this election anymore? We're well past the point when him backing a candidate would have made a numeric difference in the results. We're well past the point where having him in either camp would have made a difference in the eyes of the people. We're even beyond the point where his voice is any more significant than any other superdelegate. Can someone please enlighten me?

Kelan   April 3rd, 2008 7:15 pm ET

I hope he reconsiders, as a person that is firmly populist, i was praying for an Obama/Edwards ticket since i watched John Edwards speak in New Orleans. Think of us John, we need you right now.

JP   April 3rd, 2008 7:10 pm ET

I'm disappointed, he was my top pick. Now I'd say Daschle or Sebelius.

Ratgurl   April 3rd, 2008 7:09 pm ET

His ego's too big to take such a piddly little job. Or maybe it was never offered to him & he's trying to save face? That's what you get for not endorsing the person you believe in! No one believes in you either.

Obama/Eduard   April 3rd, 2008 7:05 pm ET

For the sake of the country you need to reconsider this decision...
We love you man

Obama/Eduard 08

Les Robinson   April 3rd, 2008 7:00 pm ET

That's what he say now. Once things calm down and the Presidential nominee is decided once and for all, Sen. Edwards may very well change his mind if it's offered to him. That said, Sen. Obama will be under great pressure to select a woman running mate, perhaps someone like Governor Sebelius of Kansas; or, Sen. Clinton to select a running mate who happens to be a visible minority, perhaps say, Obama or someone Hispanic. Whatever the scenario and in whatever capacity, America would be well served with Sen. Edwards playing a big role in its' governance.

Elizabeth   April 3rd, 2008 6:58 pm ET

I voted for Edwards in the 2004 primary and for Kerry/Edwards in the general election. I had been impressed with him, and thought he would make a great attorney general, which is a position potentially more powerful than the vice presidency. However, with the situation his party is in, I can only see his silence as cowardly or self-serving. We need for him to take a stand. In times of crisis, those who stand by in silence are the worst.

Mel   April 3rd, 2008 6:56 pm ET

His and Gore's endorsements would seal the nomination for either Clinton or Obama

merle 7   April 3rd, 2008 6:52 pm ET

Too bad would have made a good VP or president.

Unleach him on our Corporate Overlords, and watch him get their foot off of our necks!

GOBAMA

Jayson   April 3rd, 2008 6:51 pm ET

Of course he doesn't want VP. Why take VP when you really want Attorney general so you can do your part legally to further screw this country up and do you part to trample the Constitution under foot?

Mike   April 3rd, 2008 6:46 pm ET

Okay then. We all know that Edwards is also boring and inconsequential. On a more important note. The evil Clinton machine has succeeded in getting Randi Rhodes kicked off of Air America Radio. What a sad shame. Randi was the only one on Air America worth listening to.

Tobias   April 3rd, 2008 6:43 pm ET

Why would he want to be on another losing ticket?

Next President Hillary Clinton 08   April 3rd, 2008 6:42 pm ET

I think he would have made a great VP with Clinton.

INDY PENDENT   April 3rd, 2008 6:40 pm ET

Who's John Edwards again???

Rick   April 3rd, 2008 6:36 pm ET

This means Obama is not getting Edwards. I am glad he is using his brain.

Jason   April 3rd, 2008 6:30 pm ET

Who is going to offer him a VP position?
He's just a loser, dangling from one frontrunner to the other.

4REAL   April 3rd, 2008 6:24 pm ET

Since Edward is not going to run second then who will it be? Gore or Casey? Good question

Tempered   April 3rd, 2008 6:23 pm ET

Wow! I'm kind of shocked . . .

So, why's he holding off endorsing someone then? Wants to be AG instead? Or maybe he thinks that he'll end up being the "compromise candidate" in August?

What a mystery!

karen charlottesville, va   April 3rd, 2008 6:19 pm ET

I respect Edwards and would love to see him as AG. He does have young children and a sick wife, so personally, I think he probably made a good choice for his family. Some of these people do actually have lives.

FrankSmith   April 3rd, 2008 6:18 pm ET

Given this answer, we can now predict with some degree of certainity that Edwards would like to endorse Hillary. How can a man I have grown to admire so much in my professional life (PhD) make such an error in judgment by endorsing Hillary?

Ernest   April 3rd, 2008 6:16 pm ET

We do not need you anyway--spoiler!

Get Real   April 3rd, 2008 6:12 pm ET

I agree with Ronald above...John Edwards would make an awesome Attorney General...shades of Bobby Kennedy. That role has become so significant with all the Gitmo garbage, etc. He would also make a great supreme court judge. He is such a decent guy.

Mary   April 3rd, 2008 6:08 pm ET

He's smart. With Obama the probable nominee and tearing the democratic party in half (despite his platform of hope and unity), there's no way Edwards wants to be on two losing general party tickets back to back. The swift boat campaign will look like child's play after the republicans get a hold of Obama.

MF   April 3rd, 2008 6:08 pm ET

I am not sure Edward's endorsement will help any of the candidate now. It is good that he is sitting on the fence. But that is not a smart move neither for his own personal ambition. If he wants a position in either of the cabinets. He will be better off making a commitment now.

May be he plans, running again for presidency in 2012, hey, you never know.....

ANTI CLINTONS   April 3rd, 2008 6:06 pm ET

I thought he was on the last shuttle flight and on the space staion, I didn't know he was still here!

Who cares what he wants or doesn't want, the guy is a loser!

Hoosier   April 3rd, 2008 6:06 pm ET

John Edwards would make an excellent Attorney General.

Tony   April 3rd, 2008 6:05 pm ET

No Attorney General position either. He had his turn but failed to deliver North Carolina in the general. I don't think he is of any use to Clinton or Obama.

John G, New York, NY   April 3rd, 2008 6:04 pm ET

Yeah yeah...who cares.

I'm more interested in whether ELIZABETH EDWARDS is interested in the job!

Eli   April 3rd, 2008 5:55 pm ET

Maybe he doesn't want to run for VP again. As for the endorsement, maybe he thinks that both have strengths, and that not endorsing one or the other in a primary makes him a more credible supporter of whoever wins the nomination for the general election campaign. And maybe people should stop expecting him to fulfill their political desires and run Obama's campaign for him. Leave the man alone. Obama supporters: if Edwards hadn't gone after hillary in the original Philly debate, she'd have already wrapped up the nomination. Say thank you and GOTV for your guy. Leave JRE alone.

to bad mr. edwards. after the comments by your wife, i hoped you would back hillary. i think it is time for people in office and for the press to put their personal feelings behind them and do what is best for the country. obama is not ready. his lies about all he has done are starting to come out and people will see that, but i feel it will be to late. being from pa and seeing him on the news everynight makes me see just how much he is trying to copy hillary. he can't even think for himself.

While you're all either angrily dissing Edwards or expressing YOUR disappointment, you might want to remember that he's had a dead son and an incredible wife with Cancer. Why don't we ALL chiil out. You guys sound worse than the politicians!

Aaron- Long Beach, CA   April 3rd, 2008 5:37 pm ET

All of you slamming Edwards for being too quiet or not wanting to be VP forget that this is a man with a wife that has active cancer. His first duty is to his family, not you.

In any case Edwards endorsement would be best right before the NC vote. Not now.

I agree with Ronald that he would be an awesome Attorney General.

My 2 cents

Anita in NC   April 3rd, 2008 5:31 pm ET

Edwards abandoned the responsibilty of his US Senate seat almost as soon as he hit DC.
POTUS was always his focus. He could not deliver NC if on the ballot.

THE NAKED TRUTH!!!   April 3rd, 2008 5:22 pm ET

He's smart. He doesn't want to be on a ticket that will destroy America. The man instead of bringing unity so far has succeeded in tearing the Democrat party all to peices. Goodby to the Democrats. Soon you will be able to call them the NAACP Democrat Party of America. Vote anybody byt Obama.

Marian London   April 3rd, 2008 5:20 pm ET

That's a shame that Senator Edwards will not be accepting the role of VP. He would have made a very good VP to Obama in the deep cleansing and purging of politics as usual in Washington and getting something done for all and not just for the rich few. Perhaps he would rethink his decision if he reads this message.

Anna   April 3rd, 2008 5:19 pm ET

Much to be admired in this man – I wish him good luck in the future, and whatever he decides to do, I'm sure he will make this country proud.

you're right John go to a third party and get out of this disgrace of a party ' It's time to start a fresh new party who wouldn't owe anything to anyone. Take the White men vote and you would take alot of white voters and some AA votes. You can see this race is nothing but a joke from both candidates.

Obama Supporter   April 3rd, 2008 5:15 pm ET

I could see why he doesn't want to be the vp nom, AGAIN. Been there, done that, maybe he needs to be with his family. There are many great ways for him to be involved serving the country so let's all show some respect for his decision.

Democrat Voter   April 3rd, 2008 5:13 pm ET

Self-serving hypocrite

lopez   April 3rd, 2008 5:13 pm ET

I just don't get his reasoning. I just don't understand why he hasn't come out and endorsed either candidate. Maybe when there is a nominee, he will jump in and at least make sure the Democrats win the election. That's about all he can do at this point since it is too late to help either candidate after they've slogged it out this long. But in the long run, just helping America elect the best candidate is all that is required, and he can do that very well as this is his life.

Jessica   April 3rd, 2008 5:12 pm ET

I really wish Edwards had stuck it out. He would be a much better candidate than what is left.

John   April 3rd, 2008 5:12 pm ET

Edwards was a weak VP candidate last time and he'd be worse now. He should stick to lawyering.

Deana   April 3rd, 2008 5:10 pm ET

Good for John...

Now what do all the Obama/Edwards supporters do?

lauren   April 3rd, 2008 5:07 pm ET

He has got to have something up his sleeve. He is totally playing this out by not endorsing anyone so that either one of the candidates will offer him some sort of cabinet position.

Kate   April 3rd, 2008 5:06 pm ET

Drew, he was asked whether he would be vice president! Relax.

JR in Pennsylvania where we love Obama   April 3rd, 2008 4:57 pm ET

John Edwards is a big zero. He did nothing in the Senate to distinguish himself, and he's done nothing since his failed bid with John Kerry 4 years ago to support the anti-corporation, populist image he like to project. What he has done in the past 4 years to help the poor and disinfranchised? No one who truly cares about poverty gets a $400 hair-cut.

Mike, Arkansas   April 3rd, 2008 4:56 pm ET

Thats a real shame because Edwards could use the VP slot to really help the poor and homeless like he has always wanted to do. We all know Obama would help him do anything needed to help in that area.

Wow.. what a waste.

Edwards has more to offer than being a vp to either of these two dweebs running.

NO EVERYONE WANTS TO PRETEND HE IS SOOO WONDERFUL. GET OVER IT. I LIKE EDWARDS BUT HE DID NOT HAVE THE GUTS TO ENDORSE OBAMA FOR FEAR OF PISSING OF THE CLINTONS.

len   April 3rd, 2008 4:41 pm ET

If he stays out and Gore defers, there is a chance the candidates will make a deal and run together. Since that is their best chance of defeating the Republicans, one can hold out a slim hope that they will get over themselves and make that deal.`

Why are people angry at him for that?

I say he is true statesman, letting democracy thrive!

Tom I   April 3rd, 2008 4:24 pm ET

I personally am ashamed for both Edwards and Gore. Their silence has been deafening during this drawn out primary. It would only take an endorsement from either of them to push one candidate over the top. I've lost heaping loads of respect for both of them.

That's a shame because I was hoping for Edwards in the VP seat. A big loss for our country.

I don't blame him. If Obama becomes the Democratic candidate Edwards is smart enough to know he will never be in the White House so he's opting for a more secure job with a future.

Kimber Grace   April 3rd, 2008 4:16 pm ET

John Edwards is smart for not endorsing Clinton nor Obama, and he would have made a better president than either of them. And Elizabeth Edwards would have been an even better president than John Edwards. Get well Mrs. Edwards, you have many, many fans!

ariel   April 3rd, 2008 4:15 pm ET

Edwards is too self-absorbed.

AJ, IL   April 3rd, 2008 4:15 pm ET

Neither Obama nor Hillary was going give Edwards a VP ticket. Maybe Hillary would have offered it to him for an endorsement, but not Obama. The Obama-Hillary race has become to embittered for them to run on the same ticket.

Obama needs a VP who he can trust and has good credentials. Having a woman Governor as VP (i.e. Serbrius of Kansas) is both risky and unconventional, but very intriguing. If Obama is looking to change the electoral map he may choose a popular Governor from a swing state or Red state like Virginia. I think quite possibly the strongest ticket on paper for me right now is having Sen. Jim Webb from Virginia as VP.

Edwards doesn't have the political clout he once held back in 2004.

Margi   April 3rd, 2008 4:14 pm ET

When asked if would consider replacing Tom Brady as quarterback for the New England Patriots, he also said "no." Of course, no one in their right mind would ask him to run as vice president or replace Tom Brady.

Dude, your 15 minutes were up a long time ago. Nice hair, though.

Marc   April 3rd, 2008 4:07 pm ET

That leaves Obama in a fix. What will he offer Senator Edwards for his endorsement now?

Cindy   April 3rd, 2008 4:07 pm ET

Bummers. He'd be a great VP.. for either nominee.

Saad   April 3rd, 2008 4:06 pm ET

Good for him and for the country..... on a rather more serious note, the Vice Presidential compound will not have to be turned into a barber shop ::))

Haley Rodman Clemson   April 3rd, 2008 4:06 pm ET

Yes he would. He would love nothing more. I'm sure that he knows that his services will not be needed because he has little or no political clout left.

mimi de la cruz for OBAMA   April 3rd, 2008 4:06 pm ET

WE ALWAYS WELCOME MR.EDWARDS SUPPORT AND FEEL THAT

HE IS AT HEART CLOSER TO WHAT OBAMA STAND FORE, THAN

HILLARY. HOWEVER ONLY HE CAN DECIDE THAT.

COME ON HELP US OUT HERE. NOW BETTER THAN LATTER.

RZjr   April 3rd, 2008 4:05 pm ET

That's all fine and great... But what we really want to know is if he's going to endorse anybody any time soon...

Doug--Los Angeles, CA   April 3rd, 2008 4:05 pm ET

I admire Edwards integrity & sincerity. He hasn't endorsed either Hillary or Obama, & I hope he continues to remain neutral. He clearly isn't trying to set himself up for a VP or cabinet position, quite unlike Richardson!!

Phillip Bunn   April 3rd, 2008 4:05 pm ET

Who cares what John Edwards does. Maybe he can really pout by growing a beard.

David, Silver Spring, MD   April 3rd, 2008 4:03 pm ET

Just as well. He seems to have good ideas, but he doesn't have the kind of experience working the machinery to help Obama with the day-to-day operations or in rounding up support in Congress.

I think Bill Richardson would make a great VP for Obama, but I wonder what kind of backlash that would generate from whites who already blame the blacks and latinos for taking their jobs. Of course for them, only Archie Bunker would be a suitable VP choice.

Rick Maryville TN   April 3rd, 2008 4:03 pm ET

This is nothing new he has said before been there done that, never again. His vision for a better America an America for all not for the well healed would never be advanced by being Vice President.

Joanne   April 3rd, 2008 4:02 pm ET

It's time to make a choice, Sir. Enough drama.

Michael, North Carolina   April 3rd, 2008 4:01 pm ET

Former Sen. Edwards I think it would be and honor for you to run as a VP candidate. Sen. Obama is willy and ready for you to come aboard and support his campaign. I believe the two of you would bring back the greatiness of America. Out with the old and in with the new.

YES WE CAN
OBAMA/EDWARDS '08

Pete from Boston   April 3rd, 2008 4:00 pm ET

If this were a Clinton response it would mean that (s)he was still aiming for the top of the ticket since the other two are near deadlocked. If the convention turned to him, would he accept?

patricia   April 3rd, 2008 3:58 pm ET

good news

Kevin---Wasington, DC   April 3rd, 2008 3:58 pm ET

All John Edwards will be is a supported and he knows that they is why he has not taken sides. I guess this will make him feel important. Well if he wants to get back in politics he needs to get right with Obama. As we know Clinton can not numbers wide catch Obama. Oh.....how come the media is not broadcasting that Obama is now the official winner of Texas, so Billary can not win every swing state as she says and it looks like hr fellow latino's let her down that she was so counting on--well what do they know anyway.

D. Tieken   April 3rd, 2008 3:58 pm ET

This is really sad. I had hoped Mr. Edwards would be in the race for V.P. He is what is needed in the race and will be missed. A voice of reason.

Steve   April 3rd, 2008 3:57 pm ET

That's a shame, because he's really one guy I feel strongly that I could get behind. But at least he isn't supporting Clinton.

sophia nyc   April 3rd, 2008 3:57 pm ET

Come out of the closet, Edwards. Cast your vote already.

scott   April 3rd, 2008 3:57 pm ET

......and I personally declare that i WILL NOT accept a contract to play with the New York Yankees....the fact that they would never offer me not withstanding. Thanks for playing John!

Reese H   April 3rd, 2008 3:57 pm ET

That's a shame. I think he would help bridge the gap between those who would feel left out when their candidate doesn't get chosen. Edwards is definitely an inspiration, and the two contenders should have been Obama and Edwards, not Obama and Clinton.

Randy Endicott   April 3rd, 2008 3:57 pm ET

I think that John Edwards would make a fabulous vice-president
because he would do what Anderson Cooper is always
advocating, and that is "keeping em honest....

Dan , TX   April 3rd, 2008 3:57 pm ET

Good to know.

Yes, DM again Arlington, TX   April 3rd, 2008 3:56 pm ET

Let him continue to walk the fence. This work to advantage Clinton..

Farrell, Houston, Tx   April 3rd, 2008 3:56 pm ET

Interesting that John Edwards says no to VP spot when asked by a "reporter". That sounds like neither Hillary nor Obama have asked him because logically he would have said they both asked and the answer was no.

Jen Scott   April 3rd, 2008 3:56 pm ET

I think that is a poor decision on his part. John Edwards has the ability to do great things. He can help run the country and do just as much as the president will. He will also have the ability to gain first hand experience. If he has too much pride to take the no. 2 spot then he didn't deserve to be President in the first place.

Cammi317   April 3rd, 2008 3:55 pm ET

LOL...can't say it any plainer than that. Although, it doesn't mean he wouldn't take a cabinet or other position, now does it?????

Apple Pie   April 3rd, 2008 3:55 pm ET

The new administration needs to find a place for John Edwards. I feel the same way about Richardson, Biden, and Gore. We need all the talent we can call upon to get the nation back on course.

Jack   April 3rd, 2008 3:55 pm ET

John Edwards not endorsing either candidate means 1 thing: he doesn't want to endorse Obama

Elizabeth Edwards made it clear yesterday that Obama's healthcare plan is flawed while Hillary's plan is truly universal

Gotta read between the lines!!

WallyWutMD   April 3rd, 2008 3:55 pm ET

I don't know why so many people were sweating him anyway. Buh-bye.

Obama/Richardson 'O8.

After further review,Texas   April 3rd, 2008 3:55 pm ET

Americans had a chance to elect you John, but as usual were too stupid to do so.

Paula in WI   April 3rd, 2008 3:54 pm ET

Too bad but I wish he would at least allow his support of one of the others known.A lot of people admire John Edwards.

Independent-woman-voter-for-Obama   April 3rd, 2008 3:54 pm ET

Of course! John Edwards wants to be president, maybe sometime in the future. Sadly, he did not reach people like Sen. Obama has.

Edwards will be a wonderful president one day. God bless him & his family!

OBAMA 08!

PA voter   April 3rd, 2008 3:54 pm ET

That is OK. I think personally that Mr. Edwards would serve better in the humanitarian part of society. Kind heart and smart. He could get more done there.

GO OBAMA

bizu   April 3rd, 2008 3:53 pm ET

Good job!

Obama Mama   April 3rd, 2008 3:53 pm ET

Too bad ...but who can blame him.....Attorney General would be better though...at least we would know he was honest.

Paul   April 3rd, 2008 3:53 pm ET

That's too bad. Edwards would make a good VP. I guess it will be Richardson now.

Independent   April 3rd, 2008 3:53 pm ET

That is too bad. An Obama Edwards ticket, in my humble opinion, would be a phenominal choice for America.

FIREDUP   April 3rd, 2008 3:50 pm ET

That is ok just endorse obama that is the least you can do for the democratic party.

Th3rdpwr   April 3rd, 2008 3:48 pm ET

Well, isn't that interesting. Wonder if an endorsement is in the offing.

Mike   April 3rd, 2008 3:48 pm ET

This is great news... we are screwed in November!!!

AJ   April 3rd, 2008 3:36 pm ET

Edwards is no idiot. We democrats will not win in November. For Obama to claim he will unite the party is absurd. There are so many of us out here that dispise Obama and will refuse to support him, and the entire black community will not support Sen. Clinton if she became the nominee, that winning is probably very unlikely. Why would Edwards want to be at the bottom of a losing ticket twice?

Robert in Toronto,ON   April 3rd, 2008 3:33 pm ET

That's too bad, because I think alot of people would have liked to see John Edwards as a VP instead of the Presidential candidate. He could have sore feelings right now about how he was attacked by both Obama and Clinton and doesn't want it. Who knows? Maybe he'll change his mind down the road

Alex H   April 3rd, 2008 3:32 pm ET

That's a bit of disappointing news but I don't blame him. There will probably be resentment from the losing candidate if he takes the VP slot.

Drew   April 3rd, 2008 3:32 pm ET

Screw you, Edwards. First you lead America into thinking you will come out and support a candidate. Now you deny a VP job that hasn't even been offered to you yet. You piss me off more and more every day, and I used to be a big fan of yours. If you'd rather sit back and watch the party be split, you have certainly lost my respect. Just stay in NC and keep out of sight.

honkey white guy from cali   April 3rd, 2008 3:32 pm ET

well at least when he makes his endorsement to late to be helpful all the Clinton elite will not claim of he made a deal with Obama! some of these people are as bad as she is with the say and do anything stuff. But glad he at least is saying something

Jim Shimmer   April 3rd, 2008 3:31 pm ET

It's sad how politicians won't speak up and have the best of both worlds.. Probably will be given a position in either democrat's administration if they win because he stayed neutral...
Pathetic.....

Thats what you call politically inconvinient!
Just like Billary!

Ronald   April 3rd, 2008 3:30 pm ET

He would make one heck of an Attorney General!

Tex   April 3rd, 2008 3:30 pm ET

"All or nothing!"

Ticker Junkie   April 3rd, 2008 3:29 pm ET

Add Al Gore to that list...

WIll   April 3rd, 2008 3:29 pm ET

well.... that seems to answer that.

Echoes of Biden.

Jeff in Plainfield, IL   April 3rd, 2008 3:29 pm ET

Hmmm...Edwards going Gov or Senator? He's got to have plans. While he didn't get much vote vs. Clinton or Obama, he does have a lot of support within the party.
