Clinton releases tax returns

Clinton had been under mounting pressure to release her tax records before the Pennsylvania primary.
Clinton had been under mounting pressure to release her tax records before the Pennsylvania primary.

(CNN) - Hillary Clinton released her tax returns for the years 2000 to 2006 late Friday afternoon, ending weeks of speculation over her delay in making them public.

“The Clintons have now made public thirty years of tax returns, a record matched by few people in public service,” spokesman Jay Carson said in a statement. “None of Hillary Clinton's presidential opponents have revealed anything close to this amount of personal financial information.”

The campaign said the records showed Bill and Hillary Clinton had paid more than $33.7 million in federal taxes on a joint income of $109 million and donated $10.2 million to charities over the past eight years.

The New York senator had initially said that she would not release them unless she was the Democratic nominee. But at a debate shortly before the March 4 primaries, she said she would consider releasing them "even earlier," though she did not name a precise date.

"I will certainly work toward releasing them, and we will get that done and in the public domain," said Clinton.

Later, she pledged to release the documents by this year's April 15 tax filing deadline. But ten days ago, following Obama's decision to release his tax returns of this decade, and attacks from his campaign over Clinton's delay in making her own public, she announced that she would release the returns within the week.

The Obama campaign's criticism centered on Clinton's decision to lend her campaign $5 million earlier this year, along with former President Bill Clinton's $20 million payout from supermarket holding company Yucaipa.

In conference calls with reporters, Clinton campaign spokesman Howard Wolfson accused the Obama campaign of unfounded negative attacks over the delay, noting that there were "20 years of Clinton tax returns in the public record."

The tax returns are the second of three batches of documents Clinton has come under pressure to release. Her scheduling records that date to her time as First Lady were released late last month. The list of major donors to the Clinton Presidential Library has yet to be released.

  2. Pay Attention

Are the staunch Clinton-Haters forgetting that the '30 years' comment comes from the fact that they previously released (BEFORE 2000-2006 tax period) their earlier tax records and ALREADY had released more personal financial information than any other candidate. So 'check' your own math.

And to all the people acting like Obama is so much closer to earth because he made less - OBAMA IS STILL A MILLIONAIRE (is this thing on)? He is rich and has been well off for most of his adult life (post Harvard), he has no more claim to 'common folk' than anyone else.

    that said –

    OBAMA 08!!!!!

Actually, it's "grammar," not "grammer." Also, i went back and looked through the comments on this thread; the vast majority of the all-cap posters were anti-Hillary.

But keep making stuff up, Skippy; liberals are good at that.

Obama made a lot of money right after getting in to the U.S. congress. He bought 1.2 million dollar home in Chicago and again bought more land next to the property for a big change. Where did he get the money?

When I supported Hillary, I had no doubt that they have made money, but when Obama comes in and says "change" with his millions and have all old washington people backing him up that is when it gets annoying.

I guess Bill and Hillary will hire blue collar workers to work on their lawn. They do not relate at ALL. 109 Million friggin dollars. And they are trying to tout how much they gave to charity? They netted 57 Million bucks. When 1 million per year will allow you to live lavishly. These rich people who think they are entitled to everything make me sick. THey have money, now they want power..no scratch that..MORE POWER. Its not like they didnt already have 8 years of power to do what ever it is they are promising. Did the improve public schools in 8 years? NO..did they fix health care in 8 years.NO..but they want another 8 years. GIVE ME A BREAK. BILL..YOURE THE BIGGEST FAIRY TALE OUT THERE.

"Clinton is a lying two faced big business advocate"

Hate to break this to you Bill, but big business is the reason that we have a high standard of living in this country. Most people work for a big corporation, and even if you don't the money that ordinary workers from these companies make and spend is what makes the economy function. I am tired of people painting corporations as these evil things. We would be in big trouble without them.

None of this matters because the 2007 return that they have NOT released will show the worst of the secrets. The 2007 return will show the BIG dirty dealings with foreign interests.

Billary -release the 2007 return and library donor list NOW!

Interesting in the dishonest politics of the Clinton's. Now they are withholding information on their tax returns and looking for an extension. Very interesting!!!! It appears to me that we have the same nonsense that we have had the past eight years. Steph in Pa – you haven't stayed tuned in very well – I understand there are some audit reviewers quite angry with the Clinton's holding back important details as to business partnerships. Very, very curious.

Amazing! And they had to set up a Legal Fund to solicit donations because "Ken Starr was driving them into bankruptcy"! Not bad for folks that have been on the public payroll all their lives.

Oh well, they still don't have enough to buy this election!

108.5 million dollar income increase. Confirms my suspicions there's a lot of favors that have to be returned.

Sure, Hillary Clinton has released more financial information than her opponents. She and Bill have made an unprecedented amount of money, more than Obama or McCain. Were the Clinton charity contributions funneled through Bill's Foundation or Library? If not,, where did $10 million for charity go? And how did her ghost-written two books make over $10 million? Are there publishers' records of how many copies were sold? No one I know, and many are Hillary supporters, bought either book. Anyway, let the scrutiny begin.

Some of you people need to learn how to read. Yes she and Bill have made a lot of money, but they have also written 4 books that have totaled over 40 million dollars. Plus for the person who questioned why they aren't doing more like Bill Gates and Oprah, giving 10 million dollars is a lot, more than the listed 3.1%, in fact 3 times more. Plus, if you read that paragraph it clearly mentions the Clinton Foundation, which is a charity that deals with global issues that they founded, so it isn't like they are keeping all of the money they make to themselves. Just because you may be jealous or just rude, it doesn't mean that you have to bash a person for making money or being successful. Whenever Hillary Clinton releases whatever it is that people ask her to or complain about her not doing, whether papers about being first lady or her taxes, which she didn't even need to do, people just seem to pick it apart, so why would she want to comply with people's wishes. At least she has papers to release that lists her history and what she has done and has accomplished, unlike her opponent who just says whatever and people believe. For those who say how can she consider herself to be in the same category as blue collar workers- it isn't like she started out with millions. People need to stop criticizing every little thing Hillary says or does and realize that it is abut the issues and what each candidate can do to make America better. Even though I am a young voter, even I realize that hope can only get you so far- It is about action, and it seems that Obama's actions are more follow the leader. It doesn't take a genius to just repeat whatever it is that your opponent says.
