Clinton releases tax returns

Clinton had been under mounting pressure to release her tax records before the Pennsylvania primary.
Clinton had been under mounting pressure to release her tax records before the Pennsylvania primary.

(CNN) - Hillary Clinton released her tax returns for the years 2000 to 2006 late Friday afternoon, ending weeks of speculation over her delay in making them public.

“The Clintons have now made public thirty years of tax returns, a record matched by few people in public service,” spokesman Jay Carson said in a statement. “None of Hillary Clinton's presidential opponents have revealed anything close to this amount of personal financial information.”

The campaign said the records showed Bill and Hillary Clinton had paid more than $33.7 million in federal taxes on a joint income of $109 million and donated $10.2 million to charities over the past eight years.

The New York senator had initially said that she would not release them unless she was the Democratic nominee. But at a debate shortly before the March 4 primaries, she said she would consider releasing them "even earlier," though she did not name a precise date.

"I will certainly work toward releasing them, and we will get that done and in the public domain," said Clinton.

Later, she pledged to release the documents by this year's April 15 tax filing deadline. But ten days ago, following Obama's decision to release his tax returns of this decade, and attacks from his campaign over Clinton's delay in making her own public, she announced that she would release the returns within the week.

The Obama campaign's criticism centered on Clinton's decision to lend her campaign $5 million earlier this year, along with former President Bill Clinton's $20 million payout from supermarket holding company Yucaipa.

In conference calls with reporters, Clinton campaign spokesman Howard Wolfson accused the Obama campaign of unfounded negative attacks over the delay, noting that there were "20 years of Clinton tax returns in the public record."

The tax returns are the second of three batches of documents Clinton has come under pressure to release. Her scheduling records that date to her time as First Lady were released late last month. The list of major donors to the Clinton Presidential Library has yet to be released.

Wow! I knew the Clintons did a lot of charity but this is even more than I thought! Good for them. Actions are louder than words.

Donating 10% to charity when you still have 90 MILLION DOLLARS left is not such a big deal. Not that I disparage it - I am very grateful for the $10 million.

I just want to put it in perspective.

(I wonder whether the Clinton Library qualifies as a "charity" for this purpose?)

Way-to-go Hillary. You kept your word. Clintons donating that much to charity is awesome. I can just see Obama getting jelous now and I can see his camp going through Clintons taxes with a fine toothed comb just trying, and trying to fish for attacks.

Deb in Indiana I am with you. They are not paupers and neither is Obama. I wish people would lighten up on the Clintons. She is the one running for president, not him. He has made a lot of money public speaking and writing books and we should leave at that.
I am impressed that they would give so much of their income to charities. They certainly did not have to.
A lot has been said about how the Clinton's have had to raise money and are still not coming up to the amount that Obama raises. I find it hard to believe that all that money he raises comes from SMALL donors on the internet. Just who is helping bankroll him???

It is funny how Obama supporters are always complaining about something. Some say she released them too late. Now some are saying she release them too early. Obama supporters are getting more and more ridiculous.

Hillary never said she was a blue-collar worker. She said she's fighting for the blue-collar worker.

Thank you Hillary and shame on you cnn for being so hard on her and so easy on Obama. If you all want obama to be president you need to start praying if you believe in God. I am not even a democrat, but if all of obama's supporters can't see all of the evil around him, you are not listening and reading enough about him. What happened to all of your values, love for God and your country? There is no church or pastor, priest, etc. anywhere that I am aware of in Mississippi who preaches so much hate and disgust for our country. No Godly man would do these things that Wright did at the pulpit. Christians are to put God first so ask yourselves where you stand ont he values of love for God, your family, church family and friends? I will pray for all of you who can't see what trouble and evil follows this man that you support. By the way, how often have you seen him look and make eye contact with anyone when he speaks? Scarey...Hillary, keep fighting and don't give up. The discretions that Hillary has experienced is in alot of households in this country, but I can't say the same for Obama's.

"The campaign said the records showed Bill and Hillary Clinton had paid more than $33.7 million in federal taxes on a joint income of $109 million and donated $10.2 million to charities over the past eight years."

How do you make $10 million a year on a $150,000 a year salary?

I suspect we'll find out shortly.

Who is paying the Clintons all this money? And Why?

oh, now obama wants to say he gave to charity too. hillary has been a giver to the people ever since college. this is her calling. obama just wants to make history. he has been so negative toward hillary about her posting her tax returns. now what does he has to say. he should say i'm sorry for being so nasty about you not submitting your tax returns to the public. hillary is a giver and obama is a taker.

I'm an Obama supporter, but I don't have a problem with the amount of money the Clintons have made. Actually, I think Bill and Hillary did themselves a disservice by taking so long allowing others to make a big deal over it. America is such a great country, that anyone who works hard enough can make a fortune! There's nothing wrong with that...even IF you last name is Clinton.

Giving 10% of 107 million still leaves you a lot more to live on than most of us will ever see.

someone actually typed "Rise Hillary, rise..."
Unbelievable. I thought Hillary was delusional (with the sniper fire stories) but her loyals must be drinking the same special fruit punch that she is drinking. Even her followers thinks she's heir to the throne. A queen in this neo-Monarchy of the Bush/Clinton 27 year reign. THIS IS AMERICA, not great britain. How about we get back to Jefferson's idea of democracy? 200+ years later. Of the people, by the people. Leader in popular vote, leader in states won, leader in delegate count. Obama. I don't see why the Clinton Machine is even relevant at this point. She has no way of catching Obama. Give it up while you still have some semblence of dignity left.

The Clintons made 109 million....wow. I can see how there's no lobbist action there....buy 100 thousand copies of your book? Sure! By the way could you vote this way for us? Not to mention the records are released late Friday and in conjunction with someone in your campaign screaming NAFTA....NAFTA!!! to Columbia. I'm also curious as to where these HRC supporters are getting 20 and 30 years?? Last I checked 2000-2006 was 7...count before you say 6 people.

I'm voting democrat in Nov., I'm just hoping it'll be Obama after all the "mis-spokes", "I was tired" and whatever excuse HRC can come up with. There's a difference between mis-spoke and "I caught a fish thiiiiiiiiiiiiis big". I just don't like HRC because she says something and then if she's caught she has some reason. People...a democrat is a democrat for the most part. If you're going to vote for HRC you should be just as willing to vote for Obama, 95% of the time their ideas are just about the same!!! If it ends up being HRC in Nov. I'll still vote for her, I just hope this debacle with everything will make her realize she'll be caught if she "gets tired".

Oh one last thing...anyone who's rich will tell you it's easy to donate when you have money. Ten percent (a decent stock market return) of 109 million is....hmmmm isn't that interesting.

Before people are impressed about them giving to charity. The charity they gave nearly $1 mil last year was to "The Clinton Family Foundation." You do not have to be a rocket scientist to know that this foundation was set up for write offs. What is "The Clinton Foundation" doing is the question.

I can relate to other people. I don't have cancer, but I can see the pain. I'm not poor but I can see the need other people have. I can hear, but I can imagine what it would be like not to. So on and so on. Please stop saying Hillary can't feel for the less fortunate. She can and has for her whole life.

Now that Hillary has shown the world her tax returns since 2000, does Obama or McCain have the guts to do it. So much for whining for a long time by all these Obamaniacs. One thing off your whining list. Also all those wondering where did all that money come from....people READ the entire news. There's the whole breakup of its sources. And for some shenanigans whispering something like corrup...i don't think people file and declare tax returns on black money. They pretty much hide it. So shut up and tickle your pea-brains harder to come up with something better. Go Hillary 2008!!

Yes, Hillary, listen to us voters! Get out of the race, you have no chance against McCain. America IS NOT A DYNASTY. We do not need another Clinton! We thank Bill for his service, but sit out - you've done your part in American history, Hillary, don't ruin it.
