During her speech in Memphis later Friday, Hillary Clinton will announce the creation of a new cabinet position if she becomes president to deal with poverty.

The cabinet member will be called the "Poverty Czar."

If Senator Hillary had had a little judgment , she would have thought that billions of money spent in Iraq would have been very useful to use in her new program against poverty! Not only in USA, but all over the world. Instead she decided to turn off her judgment.

First concentrate on getting the nomination – you're not even the nominee.

Can you say "putting the cart before the horse"?

Emma   April 4th, 2008 3:55 pm ET

Czar of what! Senator Clinton will say anything to get elected or get the endorsement of Edwards. Edwards has 28 pledged delegates and half of them have already announced their support of Senator Obama.

When you have nothing else to offer as a bribe, well let's create a new cabinet position, CZAR of POVERTY! Well Edwards can take on this responsibility after he gets his $200 haircut, or was that $400?

Public eye   April 4th, 2008 3:26 pm ET

Hillary, stop playing Barbie and Ken's Dream House with the American people. We have some serious work that needs to be done. Put your tiara away and go clean your room.

RRH, Connecticut   April 4th, 2008 3:20 pm ET

This is attempt number five.
Why be hateful because a person who has devoted their life to the under served, has a great idea to appoint a czar to identify poverty and how we can lift folks out. Why be nasty with your comments when it's fact she has devoted her life's work to help those who don't have a voice. Stop being nasty and be grateful someone is willing to do what no one else has thought of.

Damian   April 4th, 2008 2:57 pm ET

Good for her. Yes, it will appeal to Edwards and his supporters and it does not matter. At least Edwards will have an impacting role in a Clinton Administration.

Bing Reyes   April 4th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

America is so lost, I could not believe what I am reading. . . America, your stars are not that attractive anymore. At this point, I don.t think any of the three contenders can unite America. So, Good Luck Big Brother Joes.

LifeLongDemocrat   April 4th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

Sounds like LBJs "Great Society".

Annete_In_Ohio   April 4th, 2008 2:30 pm ET

Guess what, I just saw her speech in Memphis. I'm younger than Hillary, and she said. paraphasing "I remember that day… and heard the news, and I threw my book-bag across the room. People didn't have book bags back then. Show me footage in the 50's of someone with a freakin book back.

Errrgh. Stick a fork in her. She's done.

The Tax Man Commeth...   April 4th, 2008 2:24 pm ET

Wow…this is hilarious!!! The Poverty CZAR??? LOL maybe the Czar should start early and help her pay some friggin bills!

…and oh yeah…can we see your taxes now?

Kim   April 4th, 2008 2:02 pm ET

Foolish people, NAFTA is not the cause of Poverty, nor is it the cause of Job Lost the way that you people try to make it out to be, many of these states that are suffering due to NAFTA are suffering because the taxes to do business in the states are so high they are crippling the businesses so they have to go elsewhere, why don't you stop listening to everything you hear on these blogs and the MSM for Obama and try and do some research.

obama 08   April 4th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

What is the diffrent between homeless homes, food stamps, medicade and Poverty Czar? thay all the same. Dont think we are stupid.

Greg   April 4th, 2008 1:53 pm ET

Czars do not belong in United States government at all! They should be limited to socialist countries; a group to which the United States does not belong!

Poverty often deprives a man of all spirit and virtue; it is hard for an empty bag to stand upright. Author: Benjamin Franklin
Bless the people who step up to the task! Thank Hillary Clinton for having a plan to lessen poverty in our Nation. She hears, and sees the poverty in our country. Amen, Amen

Paul   April 4th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

If he's as useful as the Drug Czar poverty in America will be ended, oh, never!

Ed, Santa Fe NM   April 4th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

Hillary is a moron…. she'll SOLVE poverty by creating MORE GOVERNMENT?

SHUT UP AND QUIT, YOU SHE-BUSH

Michael in Columbus, Ohio   April 4th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

Hey Jack, actually it's the other way around actually Hillary got that idea from an interview by MLK III from yesterday……..

Gary of El Centro, Ca   April 4th, 2008 1:45 pm ET

This is an obvious attempt to get a John Edwards endorsement, nothing more.

Its True   April 4th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

Poverty Czar?!?! Shouldn't they be called Mayors or Governors?!?!

Isn't it the elected state and city officials jobs to end poverty? Why do we need another scape goat? Is this another ploy to take the responsibility off HER shoulders as president if the economy craps out?

Ron R   April 4th, 2008 1:42 pm ET

Creepy……………Wake up america.

Jim in FL   April 4th, 2008 1:42 pm ET

"And so long as we still have a poverty problem in America, the Poverty Czar will have to attend cabinet meetings in a torn t-shirt, dirty jeans, and flip flops".

"I move we have a Stupidity Czar too, as we have so much stupidity in America".

What a joke.

CB in Florida   April 4th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

Sleep deprivation strikes again!

E1944   April 4th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

This idea came from ML King III not Hillary Clinton. It will be interesting to
to see if she admits this in her speech.

Marc   April 4th, 2008 1:35 pm ET

Just like Obama disenfranchises voters, you CNN "disenfranchise" comments that are pro-Clinton. If this somehow slips by the moderator (maybe it's Michelle), I just want to note that Hillary has some ideas we can start with. Barack promised Edwards that poverty would be central to his campaign and all I hear is talk about race. Quit wasting our time, Senator.

Wake up   April 4th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

Now that's a stupid plan…

LAV   April 4th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

Cut off welfare and tell people to go to work/school. I see cycle of people that are on Welfare/Medical coupon. They are very young and abled bodies. WE are taking care of them now if they don't get out of the welfare system, we will be taking care of them until they are in the Nursing HOME. I support increasing financial aid to the poor so they could go to school. There are a lot of jobs in the Medical field–RN, PT, MA, BILLING, ETC.

High School students should be penalized for dropping out of school. I can't imagine why they want to drop out of school and public school is free. It doesn't make any sense. Then people always Blame the government for their misfortune.

I came to America without nothing. I have to learn English because I know that it's the most important tool for me to survive in America and I'm proud to say I made. I am now a college graduate and own a small business. If I can do it, EVERYBODY can do it especially if you are born here because you already know the language and culture.

Thank you AMERICA for giving me the opportunity to live my dream.

SAMO   April 4th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

I got the feeling that Obama supporters will just die if Edwards throws his support behind Hillary. This irrational behavior of the Obama supporters is very unhealthy.
Get a grip of yourselves!

If you have not figured it out by now, Obama is the weakest of all the candidates still running for the office.

Raising and spending the most money does not mean a thing in the general election.

Pee Wee   April 4th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

I don't know how much more of this I can take.

I think she just needs to promise us she's going to create some kind of utopia, and if you vote for her, that qualifies you for admission to her dream-world.

Shirley, Silicon Valley, CA   April 4th, 2008 1:18 pm ET

With Hillary's divisive and deceitful personality, second-to-none attitude and say-anything-do-anything strategies, all her proposed plans and solutions will be doomed like her failed health care plan. The Clintons are again and again proof to be so obviously not trustworthy.

Only in Hillary's fantasy land, rules don't apply to her. She is loosing in the race and only in her fantasy, her opponent can't win in the general and she can????

What a joke she is! What a disgrace Hillary is!

Charlotte, You must be VERY old and lost your mind or someone posing as an old person because Suffrage came before the Civil Rights movement (check the Constitution). If you're going to support Hillary get your history right at least if not your politics.
As for "poverty czar" I think it will have as much effect as the drug czar has. Too much bureaucracy and not enough action! If you want REAL solutions check my candidate….

More Clinton lies, who can you trust….. She would like elect Bill Clinton to continue to "Sell Out America."

Hell Hillary said two weeks ago we will see her Tax Return and we have not seen them yet. What a liar!!!!!!!

Chuck in Oregon   April 4th, 2008 1:17 pm ET

Sorry, but I do not agree. You can not address poverty until you address the root cause. Which is caused by lack of jobs and education. As long as we have such a high drop out rate and the job market remains to crumble, there will be problems. Unfortunately there will always exist in any society those that are poor, uneducated and impoverished. This has existed throughout the history of man kind. There is not excuse for its existance however, we do not need more another mismanaged level of bureaucracy to tell us what we already know. What we do need is for our government to seriously address this problem in a realistic methodical manner. First and formost its the lack of parents involvement in education and the plain simple process of parents giving their kids all the gadgets to occupy their kids vs being real caring parents.

Shannon Shiflett   April 4th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Senator Clinton voted to allow banks to charge up to 30% interest on credit cards. Someone explain to me how she is fighting poverty, please, while at the same time allowing corporations to rob us blind.

Jeff Spangler, Arlington, VA   April 4th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Government doesn't make people poor. They do it to themselves and their families by remaining uneducated and untrained in employable skills, by spending money they don't have on things they don't need, and by punishing themelves with babies they can't ever hope to adequately support. Ain' no Czar gon' fix that.

jujub   April 4th, 2008 1:05 pm ET

More pandering to Edwards. John just doesn't want to share the Vice Presidency with Bill.

Jack   April 4th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

Next week, Obama will come out with a similar idea….. as is typical when Hillary unveils a plan first

Not a Republican   April 4th, 2008 12:55 pm ET

Yet another lie to get more votes. America does not need an additional post in the administration to take care of poverty issues. She must think people are fools

nina   April 4th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

Well, I guess she really does want Edward's delegates – a veiled hint that there's a role for Edwards and his platform.

marcella   April 4th, 2008 12:39 pm ET

If HIllary truly believes she can fix the economy, why would she need a poverty czar? Maybe she needs one to clean up the debts of her campaign!

Janel, St. Paul, MN   April 4th, 2008 12:38 pm ET

Carol   April 4th, 2008 12:24 pm ET

How much will she pay one of her croonies to do this job? How much more taxes will we pay?

P   April 4th, 2008 12:24 pm ET

this is ridiculous, and so typical of old school politics: if all her plans and promises for the economy, education, healthcare, etc. are as efficient as she claims they would, why would she need a new cabinet member to care only about poverty?…or do her proposed plans and promises not take the poor into account?

Farrell, Houston, Tx   April 4th, 2008 12:22 pm ET

Don't pat Hillary on the back too soon for saying she will appointment a new cabinet position for the poor, right now it's all about attracting voters. Remember Hillary's health care plan during Bill's presidency never got off the ground and she's also promising on that again so don't count your chickens before they hatch. This is about getting John Edwards to endorse her and that's all it is.

Ric   April 4th, 2008 12:20 pm ET

We have no excuse when it comes to homeless. We can bomb, invade and destroy but we cannot feed and shelter our own people? If the Dems hadn't blown it this year with in fighting, we'd be so much better off. Now we have to wait another 4 years!!!
I pity the Dems who stick around after losing the presidency a 3rd time in a row.

Great idea!
And John Edwards would be just the person to fill that position.

Ed   April 4th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

This is starting to sound like a Harry Potter movie.

KHR   April 4th, 2008 11:56 am ET

April, while I empathize with your husband being laid off, it sounds like NAFTA had nothing to do with it. You state that your husband's job was shipped "overseas". NAFTA is a trilateral agreement between Canada, Mexico and the US. If his job was shipped overseas, presumably China, India, Malaysia etc., this was due to globalization but NOT because of NAFTA.

tonyh   April 4th, 2008 11:54 am ET

There's no need for this position. All she needs to do is hand out all the millions she and her husband have to all the poor people in this country and you will see progress and no homeless anymore!!! But I don't think she has the guts to do that.

Shaun Deshede   April 4th, 2008 11:54 am ET

This is a great idea. THere hasn't been a qualified person looking out for the poor people of this country. The government has always been about the rich and the wealthy and its time that Hillary put someone in the government that focuses on helping the poor people. GREAT IDEA!

GO HILLARY!

CC   April 4th, 2008 11:53 am ET

So she is pandering to John Edwards. Sad and crazy.

JT   April 4th, 2008 11:52 am ET

I am sure McCain will claim that the greatness of the free market will solve the problem of poverty, and Obama will proably give a speech about it and be credited by the press of having eradicated the problem through the sheer power of his words.

The ignorance of those criticizing Hillary is both disgraceful and dangerous. At least McCain would offer a solution, granted it would be a stupid, unworkable one. More than can be said for Obama.

Rita   April 4th, 2008 11:52 am ET

At least Hillary is trying to do something about the poverty in this country! What kind of plan does Obama have on ending poverty? I have heard nothing from him, or is waiting for Hillary to come up with a plan so he can say "yea thats my plan too"?

Hillary 2008

Political Jonze   April 4th, 2008 11:50 am ET

Pretty please Mr Edwards, I really need your endorsement before the NC primary.

So John Edwards shoots down (was that sniper fire) all talk of a VP run, but will accept a "Poverty Czar" position. Ummm….Yeah.

Obama supporter   April 4th, 2008 11:48 am ET

Wow! I am an Obama supporter and I think this is a great idea. I am very impressed. I think I might vote for Hillary now. She does seem to have the better ideas.

Barb   April 4th, 2008 11:48 am ET

As an Independent I can not go along with this idea. Every time you turn around spend more money. Just where does she think that the money is going to come from? They still have not invented a money tree so that means more out of your's and my pocket.

Hopefully whoever is our new president will chose more wisely than our current president in regards to individuals that are selected for cabinet posts. We need people that have BOTH feet on the ground and not their heads in the clouds. it is time for a reality check.

Darth Vadik, CA   April 4th, 2008 11:47 am ET

I am sick of czars, how about we just appoint competent people to their posts.

Kate   April 4th, 2008 11:46 am ET

Sounds like a job for John Edwards!

Too bad she won't be getting the nomination.

Former Obama supporter   April 4th, 2008 11:46 am ET

Well done Hillary! Hillary is so intelligent. She has the best ideas and solutions out of all the other candidates. Let’s see how the Obama campaign copies Hillary’s ideas and make’s it their own. Everyone knows that Obama’s ideas are a knockoff of Hillary’s.

Spirit of America   April 4th, 2008 11:45 am ET

Sounds like a great mission for John Edwards.

Obama, on the other hand, will likely appoint a Wealth Czar named Michael Bloomberg.

Brendan D, Niles, IL   April 4th, 2008 11:44 am ET

So Hillary's going to change Dubya's position on government by… creating more posts the way he did? Yikes. C'mon, Hill, Ann Coulter was just warmin' up to ya…

Kevin Leo (Jonesboro, GA)   April 4th, 2008 11:44 am ET

My initial reaction is that I think this is a good idea but do we really need another federal official. How about making sure the current or future office holdes are doing their jobs first and then determine if we need to add to the bureaucracy.

lol   April 4th, 2008 11:44 am ET

Hillary offers solutions to real problems, not empty platitudes like barack. her plans are well thought out solutions to the problems of americans. she is such a leader, compared to obama the dreamer.

Paul   April 4th, 2008 11:42 am ET

This wasn't Clinton's idea. It was at the request of Martin Luther King's family. Obama will probably come out with the same proposal, and it will not be copying Clinton just because she announced it first.

Sho Me The Money - Ny   April 4th, 2008 11:42 am ET

How about this for a proposition Hillary – create a cabinate called 'Clinton Debt'! It is obvious you cannot manage your own finances and is in debt for your campaign's health care.
Here's another proposition – I'll make a contribution to help bail you out of debt if you help unite the demo party!

I read those transcripts and it was proven you SUPORTED NAFTA. We have been on a poverty train since then and bush merely didnt do anything about it. I do believe Obama will make America better. Another lie perhaps, as Obama and under issues on his site he has always had poverty listed and oops I dont see that under your issues site.

Again do and say anything including lies to attempt getting the power yu THINK you deserve. Your fighting for your own wants and not what America NEEDS.

Another clever title with no substance just like Hillary.

Franky   April 4th, 2008 11:32 am ET

You know, I think Hillary was watching the MLK J:R special yesterday…yep, she "ran out of moves", if you know what I'm saying, LOL!! Na'h, I'm just playing. Is just so easy to pick on her…

I wonder who she has in mind….the person in charge of her campaign finances, maybe? Ya can't go much further into poverty than that!

Tex   April 4th, 2008 11:32 am ET

Poverty is real and deserves real attention by the President's entire administration and not some clever new position with a catchy title costing the American public $100's of millions of dollars and where none of money or programs ever actually get to the poor who need the help. This is the typical old political way in Washington to solve a problem. "All show and no substance!"

Hillary is a joke and a liar. She is about as ready to lead the nation on day one as Bill was ready to tell her and then the nation the truth about Monica.

To Billary, Rocky, Paulette Revere, and Whomever You May Be Today !

Please save our Party, which in case you have forgotten it's the Party that is in small print on your resume , and consider serving in the position that you wanted which is, you told us , Senator of NY . isn't that good enough ?

And you would be closer to continue the Stand Up Comic routine on the David Letterman show ! Have a nice day !

Alonzo Demetrius   April 4th, 2008 11:31 am ET

WE'LL NEED A POVERTY CZAR AFTER HER MANDATORY HEALTH INSURANCE PROGRAM IS THROUGH WRINGING US OUT.

Christina   April 4th, 2008 11:31 am ET

She's adding no CZAR — she's not even getting nominated!!!

Dave   April 4th, 2008 11:31 am ET

I wonder who she has in mind….the person in charge of her campaign finances, maybe? Ya can't go much furter into poverty than that!

LTorry   April 4th, 2008 11:31 am ET

Each candidate will have a position in their cabinet for poverty.
Martin Luther King III put all candidates to the test today and so you will see Obama and McCain with the same.

Lee From Treasure Island Florida   April 4th, 2008 11:31 am ET

CNN – NEWS UPDATE
MARK PENN – CLINTON PAID ADVISOR meets with Colombian Officials on Trade Deal.
Supposedly….SHE OPPOSES THIS!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Why are you not reporting this!!!!!!

Hooligan   April 4th, 2008 11:30 am ET

Yeah . . . just no . . . we have enough of these "Czars"

Wendy   April 4th, 2008 11:29 am ET

It's a great idea to have this, but with the major players constantly cutting funding for social service programs (mental health, substance abuse), public service programs ( juvenile diversion programs, law enforcement), and public aid it will be a significant challenge to make a dent in getting necessary programs funded so that people get the help they need. Until people address the reasons for poverty, not much will get accomplished.

NickNas   April 4th, 2008 11:28 am ET

C'Mon Hillary! I swear your arms must be exhausted from throwing so much crap to see what will stick!

BUT there are people out there who don't know there are already 20 or more positions in the Government that deal with this problem already and will think you INVENTED it. They are the same ones who think you dodged bullets and still can't find those pesky tax records and earmarks and library donors lists n stuff.

David, Silver Spring, MD   April 4th, 2008 11:28 am ET

And it'll pay about $160K per year.

There's something really creepy about the idea of a Poverty "Czar." What does that make the poor people themselves? Serfs?

Jason-Milwaukee   April 4th, 2008 11:27 am ET

And probably one of the richest people will head it up, since the Clintons know what its like to be so poor. I bet she reuses sandwhich bags just like me.

"Obama 08″

Praetorian, Fort Myers   April 4th, 2008 11:26 am ET

Well…the drug Czar failed…and the FEMA Czar is a disaster….

Why not…."HEY JOHN EDWARDS I'M DYING HERE AND NEED YOUR ENDORSEMENT…IF YOU'LL ENDORSE ME I'LL CREATE YOU A CABINET POST CALLED POVERTY CZAR!!! SO PLEASE, PLEASE ENDORSE ME AND BE MY LITTLE POVERTY CZAR…YEAH, YEAH!!

Gwen NC   April 4th, 2008 11:26 am ET

Hope it will be Edwards on poverty, his work is extensive. Hillary really justs wants to do the work, she's not looking for any accalades. I'm sorry that some can't see her real strengths and dedication. But there are a majority who do, if you count all the states!!

Charlotte   April 4th, 2008 11:25 am ET

This old, young at heart, retired white woman is proud to support the best candidate, Hillary Clinton. I've fought the fight for equal rights for women. We are still fighting it. The men of this country fought to keep us from having a voice. Black men were giving the right to vote before women. We have a chance to let them know we believe a woman can and will do a better job at running this country. Unite behind the best woman to do that job, Hillary Clinton.

Marc in DeKalb, IL   April 4th, 2008 11:25 am ET

Oh, a poverty czar. My problems are solved, because what we really to solve our problems need is another layer of bureaucracy.

VOTER FOR TRUTH AND DIGNITY IN AMERICA   April 4th, 2008 11:25 am ET

Hillary has lost her mind. Possible the Senate job in New York and
possibly Bill. I know she is doing damage to Bill's "so called legacy".
And I thought, or was hoping, that book was closed.
