Pelosi pushes Bush for second stimulus bill

Pelosi is sticking to her superdelegate argument.
Pelosi is sticking to her superdelegate argument.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – In wake of the new jobs report, Speaker Pelosi and other House Democratic leaders are calling on President Bush to work with Congress on another economic stimulus package.

"Today’s disturbing unemployment numbers, combined with Chairman Bernanke’s recession warning, and threats to our standard living because of the rising costs of gas, groceries and health care compels the President to work with Congress on a second stimulus package to get our economy back on track, create jobs, and speed assistance to families struggling to make ends meet,” Pelosi said in a written statement.

Pelosi added, “When congressional leaders meet with the President next week, I will urge him to refocus his attention on America’s economy and to again work in a bipartisan manner on a new stimulus package. We need to work together to restore consumer and market confidence, to assist millions of Americans threatened with the loss of their homes, and to help families meet the rising costs of necessities

House Democratic Caucus Chairman Rahm Emanuel, D-Illinois, said, “We need an economic program that rebuilds America and offers real help to the middle class. The Democratic Congress will now begin work on a second stimulus package to help American families and get our economy back on track.”

A Democratic leadership aide says House leaders have been discussing the need for another stimulus, but have not reached any decisions on what they want included in it. Some measures likely to be considered include funding for infrastructure projects, unemployment assistance, and food stamps.

A House GOP leadership aide said it’s too early to talk about another stimulus bill. “It's still a couple of weeks until the checks from the last stimulus bill hit people's mailboxes. If they [the Democrats] have ideas on things to help the economy we're happy to talk to them, but we see no need for additional legislation at this point.”

Congressional sources note that bipartisan Congressional leaders are already scheduled to meet with President Bush on Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. Earlier this week, Speaker Pelosi called on the President to schedule a high-level meeting on the economy soon.

Hi, Nancy. Great job! Keep the Bush administration's feet to the fire! You all wanted more of a stimulus the first time, and Bush and the Repubs refused to go along.

Bush, the Repubs and the bankers (Fed) created this mess in 2001 when they gave a HUGE tax break to the wealthy, then dropped interest rates to the lowest point IN HISTORY instead of doing the stimulus spending then!

NOBODY BUT THE REPUBS TO BLAME!!!!!!!!!!!!

Idiot democrats, considering everything going on, the market is showing incredible resilience. Leave things alone and everything will work itself out. Welfare state minded democrates want to give a handout to everyone. If you cannot afford a home, don't buy one! If you cannot afford things in general, don't buy them on your $1000. dollar limit visa. We are not all equal. News flash, some actually are more successful than others. 30/70 principle: 30% of the population supporting the other 70% who are little more than parasites. And yes, these are the coveted democratic constituency. I'm sure Pelosi lives a lifestyle in tune with those she claims to represent.

It is not nice or needed to trash Hillary. That is not honest discord. What is the problem with Hillary. It is not her personality, it is her policies. Why drag her threw the mud?

2009 is going to be far worse for Americans than 2008. The American people are soon going to learn that in order for the rest of the world to live at a higher standard of living, the American standard of living must decline. We've enjoyed so much for so long we've taken it for granted. Now, as those in poverty across the globe pull themselves up, there is less for us. That America would have less was inevitable. Sad, but inevitable nonetheless. We are entering an new, and what should not have been unforseen, era in American and World history.

I certainly won't say no to getting some of my money back. After all, the Republicans have made themselves rich – 5 generations over, from the war in Iraq.

And we haven't even gotten the first "stimulus". Until our Politicians realize that this country has been SHOVED down the ROAD by those globalists who keep on wanting these trade pacts. we will only see more hurt, more poverty, more unemployment, more of the same in this country. I just read an article about what these trade pacts have actually cost this country (by buchanan) Very enlightening. I blame each and every President, Politician, Congressman, Senator, Governor who is pushing this globalist crap onto this country. It will be the death of America in no uncertain terms. I suggest you all read this article. Our Politicians are selling this country out left and right.

    Pelosi

No one wants to hear you.......ever since you showed how you favor Senator Obama you lost all respect.

You were supposed to be neutral and instead you acted like an Obamanite!

Your actions in handling the Super Delegate situation has showed us why nothing gets done in Congress.........it's because of you lack luster leadership skills.

We wouldn't need the money if the GOP favorite President hadn't started a war in IRAQ!!! So for all you GOP folks on here blaming the Democrats for your woes, go look in the mirror!!!

Because I do remember when most of the Democrats were under the strong foot of the GOP and calling for a troop drawn down, they were all labeled unpatriotic.

So please don't go blaming anyone but yourself for the mess we are in now!!!

You were duped by the GOP in 2k and 04 and if you don't wise up in this election you idiots could be duped again with McCain!!!

Thanks to Nancy and Harry's leadership the economy is in the tank. After just two years with these two in control this country is in the worst shape ever. Their solution to every problem is to throw money at it and put more illegal immigrants on social service hand outs rolls.
In two more years of these two's leadership where will we be?

Madam do-nothing certainly does like to grab headlines doesnt she? She has been a dismal speaker, leading the new Democratic majority into low approval ratings and a history of getting nothing done. Is she angling for the VP spot?

Brad....WHATEVER DUDE!..........You comment comes across as if all the American's suffering put more on their plate than they can handle and that's false! I know many people who've tried to do the right thing by saving just to come out on the low end of the totem pole. Apparently you must be doing finanically well, but many can't say that. The Bush Administration created this fiasco of a mess we call an economy so he should do more before he jets from office leaving a bigger mess for the next administration.

The best stimulus package to promote is this:

PUT IMPEACHMENT BACK ON THE TABLE!

The American people should act by not only impeach but expelling him.
He is responsable for the killing of American soldiers
    fighting a wrong war.
He is the cause for the good American people losing their jobs.
I don't think the Nation can go one more year under his
    leadership.
He has been damaged American respet in the whole world.
Wake up Americans your enemy is in the White House
