Clinton campaigned in Montana Saturday.
Clinton campaigned in Montana Saturday.

(CNN) — Hillary Clinton’s campaign says the candidate will stop telling the story of an uninsured pregnant woman who lost the baby and died after being denied medical care, following a hospital raising questions over its accuracy.

Clinton has frequently told the emotional story of the woman from rural Ohio since late February. In the speech, Clinton said the woman made minimum wage working at a local pizza restaurant, without insurance, when she became pregnant. Clinton said the woman ran into trouble and went to a hospital in a nearby county but was denied treatment because she couldn’t afford a $100 payment.

In the speech, Clinton said the woman later was taken to the hospital by ambulance and lost the baby. The young woman was then taken by helicopter to a Columbus hospital where she died of complications.

As recently as Friday night in Grand Forks, North Dakota, Clinton said, “As I was listening to this story being told, I was just aching inside. It is so wrong, in this good, great and rich country, that a young woman and her baby would die because she didn’t have health insurance or a hundred dollars to get examined.”

But an Athens, Ohio hospital is questioning the accuracy of the story. While Clinton never named the hospital in her speech, the woman she was referring to was treated at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens. The hospital said the woman did indeed have insurance, and at least at their hospital was never turned away.

Hospital chief executive officer Rick Castrop in a statement said, “we reviewed the medical and patient accounts of the patient” after she was named in a newspaper story about Clinton’s stump speech. “There is no indication that she was ever denied medical care at any time, for any reason. We clearly reject any perception that we ever denied any care to this woman.”

A hospital spokesperson confirmed to CNN the woman had insurance. She said the hospital decided to come forward after people in the community began to question if they had denied her care.

Clinton was first told the story during a campaign visit to a family’s living room in Pomeroy, Ohio. Bryan Holman, who was hosting the candidate, at the event told her on Febuary 28, ‘I’d like to tell you a story of a young women I know that didn't have health insurance. She worked in a little pizza place around here and she was pregnant and worked for minimum wage ..The hospital told her she needed a hundred dollars up front that she didn't have, of course.”

Clinton’s speech accurately reflects what she was told that day, but the campaign admits they were not able to confirm the account.

Clinton spokesman Mo Elleithee said, “She had no reason to doubt his word”. He said,” Candidates are told stories by people all the time, and it’s common for candidates to retell those stories. It’s not always possible to fully vet them, but we try. For example, medical records are confidential. In this case, we tried but weren’t able to fully vet the story.”

Elleithee added, “If the hospital claims it didn’t happen that way, we certainly respect that and she won’t repeat the story.”

“She never mentions the hospital by name and isn’t trying to cast blame. She tells this story because it illustrates the point that we have a very serious health care problem in America. That’s a point very few people will dispute," he also said.

Hospitals and insurance companies hide behind the privacy of medical records. We know these kinds of things happen.

A friend of mine, a lawyer, had a one week gap in her health insurance as she was changing plans. She was mugged, had a head injury and was able to access a state victims program account. (new lawyer with student loans) Her daughter, a doctor, told her to never be without insurance as there are some procedures an ER will never do if the person doesn't have insurance.

America's dirty little secret!

Anita   April 6th, 2008 11:11 am ET

Ridiculous.
If you don't KNOW it to be true , then vet the story before repeating in a
campaign speech.
These "stories" no more dependable or respectable than water cooler or high school gossip.

Bridget   April 6th, 2008 11:12 am ET

If I couldn't verify a story I was told by someone who wasn't even related to the woman in question, I don't think I'd repeat that story over and over and over and over and over…kinda hurts the credibility of the person telling the story.

Bama man   April 6th, 2008 11:13 am ET

This woman is so low she will do anything or say anything to get elected. I have always been told becareful of what you wish for. She is evil

Why didn't she check out the facts? Totally irresponsible.

Will she ever stop lying?

And how does the hospital know that they're talking about the same woman?

How many more lies are we going to hear from HRC?

No more lies, no more Hillary.

I just can't believe that yet another Clinton story has been found to be false. Will the 'misspeaking' ever end, Hillary?

Mike in Minneapolis   April 6th, 2008 11:15 am ET

This woman just seems to be an incessant liar! Is she autistic? Bipolar? Maybe she has ADD. Whatever the case, there is definitely something wrong with her thinking. And we want a person like this running the country? I don't think so.

Jeremy   April 6th, 2008 11:15 am ET

A member of the Clinton family telling a lie to advance their own career? How very precedented…

Mark   April 6th, 2008 11:16 am ET

You know, it's getting ridiculous now. Every couple of days a new lie by the Clintons is revealed. Hillary Clinton is out of control and will literally say anything. She is the very essence of "untrustworthy". The American people need someone better than this as commander in chief. What kind of example does Hillary set for out children by lying to get ahead?

NoClintons   April 6th, 2008 11:16 am ET

Clinton again caught in another lie they keep piling up for her lets see what are supporters are going to say about this

Oscar David   April 6th, 2008 11:16 am ET

This is again another below the belt technique of Ms. Clinton to win whatever it takes. I didn't see the rationale behind this outregeous and unchristian act for election purposes. Now America has a preview of what this lady is capable of doing if she becomes president.

BEAMON   April 6th, 2008 11:16 am ET

Who cares? The story is a metaphor. The point is that Hillary is the only candidate in the race with a health care plan that covers everyone and how bad and dumb the current system is.

Lourdes   April 6th, 2008 11:16 am ET

Hillary Clinton: I"m just going to go out on the stump and tell blatant lies knowing full well that I'll get caught eventually because in the meantime a few people will believe them and never be the wiser once the truth is revealed. Then when the truth is revealed and my opponents attack me, I will blame THEM for picking on me (since I am a woman after all) and say they are hypocrites for "going negative".

Smart woman….she doesn't make mistakes, only calculated actions with measured outcomes. It's not sleep deprivation.

mike   April 6th, 2008 11:16 am ET

Another made up story (LIE). At least Bush waited to lie until he got into office. Wow Clinton has great character, I would love to see another pres who has no problem lieing to the american people.

If I am not mistaken, denial of care to the young woman would be a violation of EMTALA, the emergency medical treatment and labor act.

Nice that the Clinton campaign doesn't feel that it needs to regard even a minimal journalistic standard, i.e. confirming a story. Without such a standard candidates are telling tales, not stories.

Dan from Minnesota   April 6th, 2008 11:17 am ET

I'm sure she was just sleep deprived the few dozens of times she told the story.

Linda Wang   April 6th, 2008 11:17 am ET

Clintons seem they think they can get away from anything and very smart in a twisted wrong way. Integrity maybe the only difference between human and mouse if they both can get grain.

ForeverAMommy   April 6th, 2008 11:17 am ET

How many times must Clintons exagerations be pointed out before America realizes she isn't the right person for the job. I am a mother and when Clinton first ran, I was behind her. i beleived that a woman, THIS woman was right. And then I took the time to look further. It's time to step down, and let the right person take the lead. Lets focus now on November and not the split between Obama and Clinton. I'm ready for a change, I'm ready for Obama.

James in Dallas   April 6th, 2008 11:18 am ET

Boy o boy o boy! Does this lady ever tell the truth? By the time that the next votes are cast, she won't have a stump speech at all. The only thing she will be able to say that her name is Hillary Clinton. I may actually have to do some fact checking on my own to make sure that she and "Bill the Player" are actually married at all. Shamefull at best.

Once you start lying it's really hard to stop.

Sheree, Medford OR   April 6th, 2008 11:18 am ET

Just another example of Hillary lying. I wonder why she keeps screwing up like this? You would think that at this crucial time in a very difficult and competitive campaign, she would have the sense to make sure that everything that comes out of her mouth is the undeniable truth.
The whole sniper fire story is what turned me off Hillary. She can't deny that story by saying someone told it to her and she can't vet every story. That was her own doing. I will cast my vote for Obama. It's time for a new generation in Washington, not the same old lying, dirty politics, good old boy network that she is part of.
Hillary, it's time for you to quit.

Bob   April 6th, 2008 11:19 am ET

stu barnes   April 6th, 2008 11:19 am ET

So this is the candidate that is running neck and neck in the Dems party?
You know, I would never expect this out of someone that already went through another scandal in the Whitewater case…I'm just so glad that we all forgot about how trustworthy she is.

Charlotte   April 6th, 2008 11:19 am ET

I am quite tempted to sever ties with this blog site. I have been very upset with the name calling by the Obama supporters. The name calling is making me want to call their guy names as well. I find myself, not liking myself. I am using words I never use to use. I see a side of me that isn't very pretty. I support Hillary and dislike the comments of Monster, Wh-re, Adulter, Liar, Thief and some even referrence Murderer. People, unfortunately, commit suicide. To infer she had something to do with Ron Fosters' death, is ridiculous. We spent over 30 million dollars and the Clintons did nothing wrong. Monica is the only thing they could pin on him, and that was not her. If she got away with anything, after that less then independent council was finished, she is the smartest person in the world, and should be President. I feel the Obama supporters are the worst sort of people. They demand to see her White House schedule, just to see how many times she was present when Bill was doing his thing with Monica. The tax returns, to try and somehow blame her for being successful. Just because I'm overweight doesn't mean I don't care about the people who are starving to death. Just because Hillary has money, doesn't mean she cannot feel for the Blue Collar workers. Hillary has devoted her whole adult life for the betterment of her fellowman. She has taken a lot of flak for staying with her husband after his affairs. She is not a quitter, she is a fighter. I would have left mine, but that's me. She has taken a lot of flak for using her maiden name with her married name. Hillary Rodham-Clinton is the best person to run this country, bar none. Barrack Hussien Obama is a fine man, just not ready for the huge task that will be waiting for the next President. We need a real fighter to get this country back on track. Rocky may be a fairy tale, but the idealism is will be very important to the next President.

While accusing Obama of stealing a part of a speech that was given to him by a co-chair, Clinton just plain spreads a rumor without checking the facts. While Obama stands up to the status quo and opposes a war based on lies, Clinton votes for "use of force" without checking the facts. While trying to further drag Obama's retired clergy through the dirt, Clinton doesn't bother to consult with her own church leadership who agree with Wright. While Clinton trashes NAFTA on the campaign trail, Penn makes back door deals with Columbia on further free trade. Something is wrong here. I try to understand what Clinton supporters are truly seeing but, my education and common sense does not allow me to be persuaded.

Hillary made up a story that was completely untrue in an attempt to mislead voters into turning more control of their lives over to a socialist construct?!

Say it isn't so!

It is like people have never seen her or her husband before. They lie. Period. Nothing she says is true. Ever.

How is it that people still lend any credibility to anything she say?

Unbelievable   April 6th, 2008 11:22 am ET

Typical - she didn't read the intelligence report - and she does no investigative work to see if what she is told is true or false - sounds like George Bush to me - just believes what she wants to hear and people tell her what she wants to hear.

It is simple: this woman is a pathological lier, if all of the lies (Bosnia, Tax returns, Colombia and Canada being contacted by her campaign, Bill's hatred and racism, ) still are not enough for her supporters and the party leaders and superdelegates and delegates ,

I believe they will elect her and we will have another Bush, she is worse than Bush…………

by God, why is the DNC not asking her to step out. she lies bluntly and gets away with it, she ends up making jokes in tv.
SHAME ON YOU BILLARY

Kenneth Woodard   April 6th, 2008 11:24 am ET

Another example of what polticians will say to win your vote. Can we believe even one story or situation that a politician uses to get our vote? It has been proven that some will say anything to the general public. The sad thing is that the general public will believe it with no questions asked. When it turns out to be a lie, we forget what they said and move on to the next item. When will we hold our politicians accountable for the lies they spew?

If it is a candidate you support, everything they say is candy. If it is a candidate you do not support, it is poison.

Once Barak or Hillary or John is elected, how will your daily life change on January 21, 2009? Will your mortgage payment go down, will you get that raise, will health care cost come down, will the War in Iraq end, will your neighborhood be crime free, will gas prices come down?

Think back to past elections……enough said…I think.

How can she lie about a baby?

What else do we need to know about this candidate? How funny that CNN continually holds Senator Obama's feet to the fire about his Pastor's words, but seems to regress when Senator Clinton's own words are outright lies. Please apply the same standard when reporting the facts…mispoke means lie.

Brenda   April 6th, 2008 11:24 am ET

Hillary needs to verify stories or information before she repeats them. The continous fabrication of information may eventually have dire consequences. She is exercising poor judgment when she does not research and verify information before presenting it to the American public. Individuals who demonstrate this type of characteristic is deemed untrustworthy.

Jacob   April 6th, 2008 11:25 am ET

Does anyone else see this as Clinton making up stories to get people to vote for her out of fear? I mean any intelligent person knows that in an emergency a hospital cannot refuse a patient (no matter the circumstances) by law. Its funny how she then threw her supporter under the bus. Sounds like the thing that would happen to us if she gets elected.

Sarah   April 6th, 2008 11:25 am ET

That is interesting. I wonder what comment Clinton will come up with as to why swhe made this mistake now. I don't know why people believe her. No one is perfect, but still.

Jack - Miami   April 6th, 2008 11:25 am ET

You can trade vegetables with your neighbors, you can choose between healthy pesticides and organic ones and provide quality health care for your garden. You can make sure that foreign bugs do not invade your flower garden. You can make deals with different nurseries on the kind of seeds that you want to buy. Face the facts, we can not count on Hillary or Bill to tell the truth about anything. To let them back into the White House would be a serious mistake. If she wins the nomination, my vote is going to McCain. Better to wait another 4 years to take the White House than to put Hillary in office only to see her destory the DNC.

Sean   April 6th, 2008 11:29 am ET

Listen. This constant pattern of lies from Hillary is no good. She is just so desperate for the nomination that she will say anything to get it. No wonder Bill Cheated on her.

Trollmaster CA   April 6th, 2008 11:29 am ET

If she doesn't have the facts to back up her story then she's doing the greatest harm to those affected by lack of health care.

Mark K   April 6th, 2008 11:29 am ET

It was probably all the sniper fire that prevented the Clinton campaign from verifying the story.

Curtis   April 6th, 2008 11:29 am ET

These are the kind of lies that politicians will tell to get votes. As we move toward a national health care system, realize full well what we're getting in the package; a monstrous program run by the government that will be inefficient, poorly staffed, and rife with workers that strive to just punch the block at the end of the day. Think "VA" except for the entire country.

Jeff   April 6th, 2008 11:29 am ET

While you can agree with the Clinton spokesman that the story she tells illustrates her point about healthcare, the issue really is not that. I see the issue as here is another time she has apprently mistated facts to embellish a story whether by intent or omission of verifications(perhaps someone was sleep-deprived at the time?). Trust is a very important thing and it is very difficult to trust her. One also has to wonder why the story was not checked out more thoroughly. As President, is she going to blindly get us into a war or make some policy decisions based on faulty informatino that even a cursory check would have revelaed was possibly incorrect?

Susan R   April 6th, 2008 11:29 am ET

I think woman was actually in Bosnia at the time.

paul   April 6th, 2008 11:30 am ET

Maybe that's what happened in the Bosnia trip as well. Somebody asked Sen. Clinton, "Wow, you landed in Bosnia… didn't you have to run to your cars to escape the sniper fire?" Her campaign didn't have time to fully vet the facts of that anecdote, but from a larger perspective it accurately depicted the fact that Bosnia was a more dangerous place to visit than, let's say, Camp David, MD.

James Shwarpshaka, UK   April 6th, 2008 11:30 am ET

The managers of HRC's campaign have finished her alredy. This campaign has been characterised by all sorts of dirty playing, negative campaigning and a lot of lies. I dont know if this the kind of president Americans want. I would think twice before casting my vote for anyone within 10miles of HRC, but again, this is America where anything goes???????………….or so I thought!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

VOTE OUT HILLARY PENSYLVANIA!

Here we go again with Clinton making up stories.

Steve, Bakersfield, CA   April 6th, 2008 11:30 am ET

What make us think that, as President, she'll be more accurate? We hear about how President Bush lies–well… What was the last one, she was shot at, before that? Before that? Before that? And remeber, "I never had sexual relations with that woman!" Pathological liers are ones who lie without remorse to serve their own needs.

GD in Detroit   April 6th, 2008 11:30 am ET

How funny, it seems the more people listen and check facts the more Clinton is caught in her own web of lies. My only question is why someone who is so intellegent tells lies that are so easily refuted.

Sarah, NC   April 6th, 2008 11:30 am ET

Why wasn't this story vetted by the Clinton campaign? The lost of this family should not have been dragged into this presidential campaign.

Jack   April 6th, 2008 11:31 am ET

Where is the story on how:

1) Obama's advisor saying that Obama will NOT BE ABLE to pull TROOPS out of Iraq, despite what he says publicly???

2) Obama lied about not taking money from big oil??

3) Obama lied about how much money Tony Rezko raised for him???

Joe   April 6th, 2008 11:31 am ET

Hillary saying something that in't true??? What a shock. Democrats, PLEASE nominate this woman.

JB   April 6th, 2008 11:31 am ET

More so now, than ever;

We know what acting on bad information can lead to. We had bad info and went into Iraq.

Just one more example of why I do not want Hillary answering that phone at 3 AM.

If she can't verify the accuracy of information on the campaign trail, why should we expect her to do better as Prez?

Jack in ND   April 6th, 2008 11:31 am ET

Yeah, she lied to us on Friday. But what else is new.

North Dakotans are a kind and courteous people, so we let it slide while she was standing there.

But there's a reason why Obama has nearly a 50/50 chance at our electoral votes, while Clinton hasn't a prayer at them.

Prof. (emer.) John Austin Kerr, Jr.   April 6th, 2008 11:31 am ET

After the Bushes, I find I am just plain disgusted by tall tales from U.S. Presidents or wannabees. In Ms. Clinton's case, I suppose it may be a case of "like husband, like wife," regarding redefinition of the concept of "truth," also. And the Clintons did both go to the same law school….

Jack   April 6th, 2008 11:31 am ET

I swear if the media piles on Hillary Clinton in order to protect Obama, I WILL VOTE FOR JOHN MCCAIN so that Hillary can run again in 2012….

TAKE THAT AS A WARNING!

if you quote the whole new york times story, it is true. CNN your are no longer a credible news source. your bias for obama is crystal clear. lets tell some of baracks lies, his parents meeting in selma. he hardly knew rezko, he took more money from rezko then he first admitted to. he had no idea his "mentor" and pastor was an extreme racist, anti semitic, anti american extremist. his wife doesn't have anti american views, and on and on and on. Cnn and msnbc tend to bury the truth about obama. hillary doesn't lie anymore than cnn. you lie to america with your half truth's and spin about obama.

Hillary……Hillary. What is so wrong with just telling the truth about things? How often would you lie to us if you became President?

Even if you didn't know it wasn't true…..wouldn't taking the time to investigate the facts (like you should have before the vote on using violence in Iraq) have proven just plain "good judgment?"

Vote for a caring, calm, intelligent, honest man.

Vivian   April 6th, 2008 11:33 am ET

Hillary will say anything to get to the heart strings of voters. Her message is not to point out the health care issues, her message is to touch people's hearts and get them in touch with their own fears and mrtality so they can vote for her. They forget the issue, they just think of life and death, and not about whether or not Hillary clinton can bring about the change we need with health care providers. She supports people just like the health care industry, money and power hungry people, and she didn't make a difference when that was ALL she had to do as first lady, with a great economya the time, how will she do that with a recession at hand and a 100 thnigs to change in our country and our image in the world. She is not superwoman, trust me, she will get nothing done. She is old Washington and old news.

Amber   April 6th, 2008 11:34 am ET

Wow, this is typical for Clinton to tell a story and not have all the details or check into the validity of it or to tell America she was under sniper fire and then say she mispoke. Her campaign is starting to make me inquire about how much is truth and how much is lie. I've always liked and respected Senator Clinton but lately her campaign has been showing America untrustworthy values. To name a few, Mark Penn, NAFTA, Foreign Policy experiences',.

Finally switching to Obama 08……

Jared   April 6th, 2008 11:34 am ET

Just another example of trying to win at all cost. How many lies does she have to tell before she shows her true face. It is very sad to use a story like this for her own good and its not even true. It is amazing how one believe that they are owed because they been in Washington for long. Now lie after lie and getting caught about saying something on the speech but her aid going behind doors and meeting with what she says she stands against. This is the clasic type of politics that we need to run away. I really wonder what her supporters have to say about these events that are found to be false. I am an Obama supporter but I believe her supporter needs to be told the truth and treated better than what they got. I am not going to go around and start the name calling because this will not solve the deep problem that I and the rest of the country face.

CNN I hope for once you post my comment.

Lisa   April 6th, 2008 11:34 am ET

Will   April 6th, 2008 11:34 am ET

Another day , Another lie. I am truly convinced Mrs Clinton will say anything , i mean anything to win. Do we want a leader who will purposefully lie to our people? I'm sure this will be thrown into the "bad judgment" category by her campaign.

Obama '08

Fabian   April 6th, 2008 11:34 am ET

Here we go again. It seems Ms Clinton cannot be trusted on anything. it was not so long ago the sniper fire story was making headlines, and now this one? Talking about being too ambitious. I am really not sure if she is ready to make that 3:00 am phone call. It appears there is something going with her campaign everyday. As experienced as she claims to be, she should know by now that exagerating stories won't help her that much.

SW   April 6th, 2008 11:34 am ET

This is not the first time she lied. Hillary has difficulty telling the truth. In fact, both Clintons are pathelogical liars. Hillary simply cannot be trusted. She will say anything to get elected to be the President. What else is new?

Obama 08   April 6th, 2008 11:34 am ET

Television tycoon Elisabeth Murdoch, daughter of News Corp. owner Rupert Murdoch, is holding a fundraiser for Barack Obama at her London home.

The invitation to the April 28 event at Murdoch's west London house lists Murdoch as one of eight "event chairs." The others include Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow, Warner Bros. U.K. managing director Josh Berger and U.S.-born chef Ruth Rogers.

The 20 "event hosts" include art collector Kay Saatchi, fund manager David Blood and Elizabeth Saltzman Walker, fashion director of Vanity Fair magazine

John   April 6th, 2008 11:35 am ET

Just when will this hillary woman learn and stop telling lies,
It is beginning to look like her whole campaign is based on lies and she keeps getting caught out.
I have come to the conclusion that the Clintons are incapable of honesty, what must foriegn leaders be thinking of the prospect of her becoming president would they ever trust her???

Kevin, PA   April 6th, 2008 11:35 am ET

Why is Hillary scaring up votes. Her stump speech is doom and gloom… without me this healthcare system will kill you and you'll all be poor. If Hillary want my vote, she'll have to work on becoming a leader and empower the American people to be their greatest and pull themselves out of this low point.

John   April 6th, 2008 11:35 am ET

vanchava   April 6th, 2008 11:35 am ET

James   April 6th, 2008 11:35 am ET

Are we seriously supposed to be surprised that Hillary Clinton has been caught in yet another attempt at subverting the electoral process just so she can "win" the presidency? She's slow to release real information, quick to lie, and never will understand that she's still losing to Obama. She's been losing ever since the people actually started voting and the media had to stop treating her like the only democrat running. She was losing when her campaign tactics went republican, and she's going to lose by the convention in August.

Erin   April 6th, 2008 11:35 am ET

Is anyone surprised? This woman has shown that she will do or say anything to get elected. Bosnia? Chelsea running laps around the trade center before it came tumbling down? Now a ficticious story about a pregnant mother…

And these are just the ones that have been proven.

A vote for Hillary is another vote for the typical Washington politics, lies & deception.

We need a change - we need some honesty - we need Obama in '08.

Angela   April 6th, 2008 11:36 am ET

Poor judgement again. Poor campaign. Another lie! It must be pathological.

Steve   April 6th, 2008 11:36 am ET

Since healthcare is her one and only trick, she has to lie and tell stories to make it look good. I'd bet she knew the story wasn't true, but I'm sure her supporters will have some lame excuse, as they always do…

Brent in Roseville CA   April 6th, 2008 11:36 am ET

When will her supporters wake up from the nightmare they are in and realize that voting for her would usher in another Clinton era based on lies, deceit, cronyism and scandal.

Sean   April 6th, 2008 11:36 am ET

Question… Why doesn't this article portray both sides of the story? For example that this story was told to Senator Clinton by the Sheriff of that county. Why would she doubt his integrity?

Panala Kinzie   April 6th, 2008 11:37 am ET

When will the public learn that this candidate will do or say anything to be elected. Truth is worth something. We have had 8 years of blatant lies, we need to be told the truth. We can deal with what is.. What we can't deal with is total lies being laid before us as the truth. What bothers me the most is that there are no reasons for the lies that Ms. Clinton is using. That is disturbing..

JL, California   April 6th, 2008 11:37 am ET

I'm no Clinton fan, but I don't think this one can be called a "lie", the way some will make it out to be. I think in this case, she didn't check her facts, but she's no reporter - how accurate do we expect her to be before retelling a story she's told? I don't have an answer, but it's an interesting question… I think she will end up taking some heat for this, because she used the story in such an emotional way. But I'm not sure that it's something that Obama or another politician wouldn't have done.

Colleen   April 6th, 2008 11:38 am ET

I watched this this morning on TV. She appeared to be repeating what was told to her from a Sheriff''s deputy. The real story here is that millions of people are uninsured. Why is preventative and pre-existing health care not discussed. I am sick of this beauty pageant the media has been feeding us.

kentucky   April 6th, 2008 11:38 am ET

I understand the issues of health care in this country, but please Hillary, don't be so gullible and eager for sensationalism in the future. All stories should be checked out before you go out on the campaign trail. Will you be making decisions at 3 am in the white house without first checking them out? I would hate to see you keep running to the refrigerator to see if the light is on everytime someone made on crank call.

rockybalboa   April 6th, 2008 11:38 am ET

And Hillary MOCKS her SUPPORTERS again in their faces. Too bad they can't accept the truth that she is a habitual liar. She needs to stop lying. The American public has had enough lies over the last 8 years.

Rob, Ottawa/Canada   April 6th, 2008 11:38 am ET

Just part of a pattern with the Clintons. I wonder how Clinton's camp will describe this, seeing as they've already used up the euphemism "misspeak".

terri   April 6th, 2008 11:39 am ET

looks like once again Clinton needs to hire someone to check out the facts before she spews forth lies.

The Taylors   April 6th, 2008 11:39 am ET

It wouldn't be the first time a famous person has made up a story to prove a point. Who dies of childbirth in this day and age?

Fran   April 6th, 2008 11:39 am ET

CNN you call this news? I guess all Senator Clinton has to do now is say "That is not what I meant…." and the press will move on from this subject. O that's right, that only works for Obama. Why don't you focus on the issues rather than on these silly details. I guess you couldn't focus on the issues, because then the press would actually have to admit that Senator Clinton's campaign has more substance.

Anonymous   April 6th, 2008 11:39 am ET

While I don't think it's smart to repeat an unconfirmed story, it's a sad day in America when people have to fabricate stories and then relay them to Presidential candidates. There are plenty of sob stories regarding the failures of the heath insurance industry - why waste people's time with falsehoods?

I'm not a Hillary supporter, but I wouldn't blame Hillary if she was told a fabricated story - but question why she wouldn't repeat any number of stories that were confirmed and avoid this particular one.

Unfortunately, Hillary can' t afford to staff change this late in the game because someone should be fired over this poor decision.

boardrider   April 6th, 2008 11:40 am ET

And one more "misstatement" …

I'd kindly request one of her supporters to quote something she said … really anything … which is accurate.

Scott   April 6th, 2008 11:40 am ET

Are we done nitpicking on Hillary yet? If so, can we move on to nitpicking Bush or Obama for their stories and comments? Or do we simply call those stories and decisions reflecting poor judgment as "boneheaded", as Obama likes to say when having to speak for his inaccuracies or errors of judgment? It's a real shame that the media is hellbent on destroying the reputation and career of a great woman who has done more for this country than any typical journalist. Instead the media would prefer to support a candidate with an ineffective track record in the senate, one who has done nothing for this country - opnly for the black community in Chicago. What gives?

Lisa   April 6th, 2008 11:40 am ET

Obama doesn't seem to have a good sense of judgement either. Look at his church and how he allowed his girls to hear what Wright said. He takes things out of context too.
If he was a senator at the time of the Iraq evasion I wonder how he would have voted with the information that was given to Congress. It is easy to give your opinion when you are sitting on the sidelines.

California Voter   April 6th, 2008 11:46 am ET

Obama should probably drop the story about being a "professor" of constitutional law as he was a lecturer, and some of the other information he has embellished for political purposes. Listen politicians, and Obama is one, will often misspeak, expand on the truth or just plain lie. I have no problem with the press talking about these kinds of things. However, fair is fair and they have in no way been fair with Hillary Clinton. I'm beginning to think it is because she is a woman?????

GO HILLARY.

Do people think that no one has died in the US after being refused treatment?

Of course the hospital is going to say this. It's not Clinton s job to pursue this story as told to her, nor is it the right time for her to defend herself in a liable case, eventhough she never mentioned the hospital.

This however, does not negate or make false the fact that this story was told to Clinton and that people do die in the US after being turned away from hospitals.

Kevin in Madison, WI   April 6th, 2008 11:48 am ET

Another 'mistatement' by Sen. Clinton. What a lie! Sen. Clinton, we all respect the great work you have done for this country, but please, please, please step aside - the country has clearly called for a new direction, and that is Barack Obama. Hillary, you're done.

The bible says, what's done in darkness shall come out to light.

I'm glad we're finding all of this out sooner rather than later, so that there can be no excuses made by the American people should she gain the Democratic nomination and the Presidency.

There can be no excuses made by the American people about re-electing GW Bush to a 2nd term in office.

Stop searching for negative junk on Sen Clinton and focus on actual news. Give it a rest already. Perhaps if you examined Obama with the same high intensity that you looked at Sen. Clinton - we'd actually learn about him and his troubles. It is not Sen. Clinton's fault if she believed the moving words of a member of the public. Get real CNN. Enough of your efforts to try to bring down Sen. Clinton. Try being fair and impartial and report actual news instead of over-hyped junk.

There have been more than several times that, inaccuracy has been found in her speech. How do we know how much of what she said is actually accurate? it might be true that the woman who died never got turned away but the notion that the hspital has to go after hillary is wrong because she was saying what she was told i sometimes tell a story of what i see on tv later they become untrue you cant call me a lier, another example is when the weather team says it is going to rain then you tell your work mate that it is going to rain then it turnes out that it dsid not rain who is the person on the wrong me or the person who told me ,be realistic and grow up am adding please grow up

Cial (Clinton is a Liar)   April 6th, 2008 11:52 am ET

When will the lying stop? I'm getting tired of all these Clinton stories. I bet 90% of them are just made up. This woman can not be president. Obama 08,12.

Hillary is responsible for her own shallow, superficial words, and should have NEVER used such a story without thoroughly checking it out first. Maybe she doesn't like to do the hard work of verifying information, such as when she didn't read the intelligence report on Iraq before voting FOR Bush's war. But she has a staff who should be able to verify information and keep her advised of where the truth of these matters are. The problem is that Hillary doesn't care if it is true or not, as long as it fits her meta-desire to impress people. She is not a fit representative for her state, let alone the entire United States. She should not hold any elective office, with such quantitative and qualitative carelessness as to the matter of truth.

Hillary didn't doubt George Bush when he wanted to go to war with Iraq. Do we really need a president who believes everything she is told. Sounds very dangerous if you ask me.

Doc   April 6th, 2008 11:54 am ET

"Shame on you Sen Obama!!!" Does that sound familiar? Moore embellishment. It seems that someones nose is growing.

Juluca_Jazz   April 6th, 2008 11:54 am ET

This is the second "falsehood" Mrs. Clinton has told in recent weeks. It appears that she longs to play on the sympathies of American voters, to sway their votes to her. Has Mrs. Clinton succumbed to petty lies to get votes? It definitely appears so.

It is pathetic that Mrs. Clinton is so desperate to become the next President, that she would actually stoop to such behavior. As Mrs. Clinton once barked at Mr. Obama, "shame on you, MRS/. CLINTON; shame on you."

Lance   April 6th, 2008 11:55 am ET

well, I'm sure she "mis-heard" the story, which lead to "mis-spoke".
When she press that button to activate a nuclear missile, her explain would be: I mis-pressed.

She "MIS" so many things, yet want to be a president. So sad.

Voice of Reason   April 6th, 2008 11:55 am ET

Her capacity to use any story, regardless of its dubious verity, in order to gain some sort of advantage is undeniable evidence as to why she should never be allowed near the presidency, even as a vice president.

Democrats, do we want ANOTHER president who has difficulty discerning truth from untruth? How many more Iraqs do we need due to faulty intelligence?

She's either a lunatic, or a liar…

Lars   April 6th, 2008 11:55 am ET

Incredible. Why on earth would anyone be supporting her at this point. It is so blatantly "more of the same". The 'experience' benefit that Mrs. Clinton would have in so many voters' estimations is a negative if all she has learned is to play this tired game, and not play it well for that matter.

Brent   April 6th, 2008 11:56 am ET

This is low even for her. Now she will just say she misspoke and laugh it off. How disgusting and in no way Presidential. This is completely sickening.

Again, repeating stories that are not true. I would think she should check the facts before repeating stories.

Obama 08

Every time she opens her mouth, out comes another lie.
