Mark Penn has resigned his post as chief strategist to the Clinton campaign.
Mark Penn has resigned his post as chief strategist to the Clinton campaign.

(CNN) — Mark Penn has given up his role as chief strategist for the Clinton campaign, it was announced Sunday.

"After the events of the last few days, Mark Penn has asked to give up his role as Chief Strategist of the Clinton Campaign; Mark, and Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates, Inc. will continue to provide polling and advice to the campaign," Clinton Campaign Manager Maggie Williams said in a statement.

Sources in the Clinton campaign tell CNN's Mike Roselli Penn realized over the weekend that he needed to step aside, and that Clinton was disappointed that he had met with the Colombians.

Wow . The Clinton Campaign is imploding nicely now .
If she can't run a primary campaign how can she run a government ?

Once again the Clinton's show poor judgement in who they select to be around them .

I guess she'll have to really negative now , here comes the kitchen sink .

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER. To the moral high ground with you Mrs. Clinton and move swiftly!

According to her campaign finances firing him should also save $7.5 Million dollars!!!

Jack   April 6th, 2008 6:40 pm ET

YAHOOO!! WAY TO GO Hillary!! GREAT MOVE!!!

Hillary's campaign is gonna bo back on top now!! You WATCH!!!

Kaywood Hopkins   April 6th, 2008 6:40 pm ET

More double speak… "will continue to provide polling and advice to the campaign," Clinton Campaign Manager Maggie Williams said in a statement.

Sounds like they are still working for the campaign?!

Do they think we can't read?

CARL   April 6th, 2008 6:41 pm ET

Excellent critique

Niko   April 6th, 2008 6:41 pm ET

About time she fired him! I think the walls are starting to cave in on the Clinton campaign.

Vig   April 6th, 2008 6:41 pm ET

Good. Now we will see if Hillary gets better advice then she has been given. Go Hillary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

maya   April 6th, 2008 6:42 pm ET

Good - now we can focus on the CANDIDATES.

“ I am still trying to…understand what he (Obama) has done for the country beyond his middle-of-the-road political moves to make his name known and to steer clear of hot-button issues. The Rev. Realistic   April 6th, 2008 6:44 pm ET

Some rats you have to throw off the sinking ship.

Seriously, can anybody even remember a campaign that was so poorly staffed and run as Hillary's campaign? Is this the sort of cabinet that you want running our country, i.e., one that seriously messes up every few weeks and goes through convolution and personnel changes? Grief!

I've never seen a campaign as full of idiots and fractured as Hillary's campaign has been, but then again their campaigns are a good reflection of the candidates and what they would be like in office. Hillary would be a big mess.

Seattle   April 6th, 2008 6:44 pm ET

Wow, that's the third to resign or get removed from running her campaign. What does this say about her judgement when hiring staff, or more critically a cabinet if elected?

April in Texas   April 6th, 2008 6:44 pm ET

Penn needs to sever all ties with the campaign IMO. This just seems to mean he wont be paid by the campaign but I am sure he will still be paid weather its by favors and/or the Clintons.. Sorry I am not that stupid..

He was asked to resign, but will remain as an advisor? How stupid can this campaign be!

Phil Michols   April 6th, 2008 6:46 pm ET

I really dont understand how someone as strong as Hillary Clinton, couldn't have the foresight and the judgement to drop Mark Penn from the very beginning. She sure made up for it by firing him now.
Good Decision Hillary.

Matt   April 6th, 2008 6:46 pm ET

It's too bad Hillary didn't make a comment on this issue…stay quiet, let your man take the fall. Still doesn't change the fact that she knowingly hired somebody with a conflict of interest.

Gerry (AUSTRIA)   April 6th, 2008 6:47 pm ET

Good decision, i hope Hillary is reading the signature on the wall and do the same, step down.

Independent   April 6th, 2008 6:47 pm ET

Ito, Yokosuka Japan   April 6th, 2008 6:47 pm ET

I really doubt this guy is resigning. And a forced resignation is the same thing as being fired. But why is Clinton firing this guy now? Does anybody really think she didn't know who this guy was?

The Clintons are pathetic and the fact that they only act after getting caught is shameful. Look hard at the way she is running her campaign, folks. It's the same way she will run her administration. Though barf bag companies will likely have record sales.

Clinton mishandled this one in an epic way.

I cannot believe they're going to keep doing business with Penn and his firm.

Kaseam Ali, Philly   April 6th, 2008 6:51 pm ET

Hillary's campaign is a debacle. How can she run a country if she cannot manage her own campaign? She has money troubles, and she has people on her team that continue to make poor decisions. Too many mistakes.

Pat Va   April 6th, 2008 6:51 pm ET

Hillary's right about one thing…there are more "twists and turns"…they're all in her campaign, however!!!!

Oh, yes, it happened to America before in 2000 and 2004 and about to happen again by any means and way ahead of the remaining elections. Ask Mark Penn and Clintons how.

Who is the CEO of Diebold voting machine anyway?

Bill Samson   April 6th, 2008 6:52 pm ET

Patricia in Iowa   April 6th, 2008 6:52 pm ET

Too Bad, so sad. Hillary misspeaks, doesn't have the right people around her. Can anyone explain to me how she is ready on Day One? Please HRC supporters, really, tell me!

sasha kando   April 6th, 2008 6:53 pm ET

Hillary herself has said that there are and will be too many twists and turns. Darn right! Look at the overall picture: She's charging down a treacherous path and in the process is bringing, or trying to bring everyone and everything else in her path along with her!

Richard   April 6th, 2008 6:54 pm ET

She's fired her campaign manager, and now her campaign strategist, her campaign finances are less than stellar. How can she still be making the case that she can run this nation? The Obama campaign hasn't had to fire any key members or change its political "persona" to remain strong in this election. I think I made my decision on who can best be prepared from day 1and who can pick the right people to surround him from day 1 without having to clean house so many times.

Too little too late Hillary.
There are only 8 states left and you are behind a million votes.
You won't catch up.
Walk away with a little bit of dignity.

Erin   April 6th, 2008 6:55 pm ET

Looks like he is still with the campaign - even though he "stepped down". I guess her thoughts on CFTA are the same as NAFTA. She talks out of both sides of her mouth. I cannot believe that she even has supporters.

laurie   April 6th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

Not exactly a resignation I would say….more like a "I'll work behind the scenes for you" Senator Clinton hasn't renounced or denounced. So I would expect more of the same from the campaign…all strategized by Mr. Penn.

BVS Maine   April 6th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

The long and winding road of corruption will eventually bring the Clinton's down.

bill-in-la   April 6th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

Hiring Mark Penn was the bigest mistake Sen. Clinton made in her entire campaign. Penn is leaving now, but his legacy is the shamble he has helped make of Clinton's campaign.

Obama   April 6th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

If she has to pay Penn the millions she owe him in back pay immediately, she'll go broke.

Tyler in Raleigh, NC   April 6th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

FIRST: She did NOT FIRE him. Learn to read, he RESIGNED in disgrace because he realizes how bad a position he is in and how continuing will destroy his business (Colombia fired him already).

SECOND: The Clingon camp said he will STILL be advising and providing polling info. UMMM… so did he quit or not????

So Clinton did NOT take the "high road" or show any principles on this issue. She sat back and stayed quiet, afraid she would be caught in another "mis-spoke" moment (aka LIE) about NAFTA. The minute Clinton takes the high-ground is the minute she realizes she is the wrong person and quits.

Cami   April 6th, 2008 6:57 pm ET

It's 3:00AM in Colombia, and Colombian children are at home, safe in their beds. In President Álvaro Uribe Vélez's office, a phone is ringing. There's a crisis in the Clinton campaign . . . . . and Hillary is on the line. "Hello, President Vélez . . . . it appears that Mr. Penn WILL be available to meet with you on Wednesday as planned."

william   April 6th, 2008 6:57 pm ET

As all campaign strategists do, Mark Penn speaks for his boss. As far as I’m concerned, anything that comes out of his mouth might comes out of Clinton’s mouth.

She could have hired somebody else, but she chose him…a reflection of her character

Gerry (AUSTRIA)   April 6th, 2008 6:57 pm ET

Since the chief strategist of Hillary has resigned, it then means there is no other strategy left for Hillary for this election. Hillary please stop wearing us down and do the right thing and just like your chief strategist, provide polling and advice to the democratic party and campaign of Obama

Linda Garrity   April 6th, 2008 6:57 pm ET

Between his dealings with Colombia and his firm's representation of the CEO of Blackwater, whose contract was amazingly renewed in Iraq, it was definitely time for Penn to go. Hasta la vista Baby!

cathy   April 6th, 2008 6:58 pm ET

Penn will be by Clinton’s side in the White House for the next 4-8 years. Does anyone really think that’s a good idea?
He’s run a terrible campaign built on cheap cynicism, and the fact that Hillary can’t function without him tells you all you need to know about her judgement/integrity.

So PA when are you going to put aside your fear of change and vote for the future. If not for you…then your children. Time and time again, Clinton has demonstrated she's not ready to lead this country. Just think about one thing: How has she managed the single most important thing in her life…her campaign tobe President of the United States of America. From the mismanagement of funds (excessive spending and not paying bills), poor judgement in advisers (Penn), her misspeak on subjects (Bosnia and young lady dying), to saying two different things on important issues that effect our everyday lives (the vote to go to war without reading the proposed bill). Now just stop and ask yourself, is this how she will run the country? If you don't think it's representative, then by all means vote for her 22 Apr. But if you say "I'm not sure"…then you need to consider now may be the time for change. Rememebr she said this was a job interview…and knowing what you know now…would you hire her? If so, then that's fine, but if not, let's move on and vote for change.

Gary in Toronto   April 6th, 2008 7:02 pm ET

Well so long as Clinton donors get to keep paying Penn and his cronies millions for polling I guess we don't need to shed any tears for them.

DANG - Can you CLINTONITES READ!

John, PA   April 6th, 2008 7:06 pm ET

It says Mark Penn HAS ASKED to give up his role, not that he WAS ASKED. Goodness, I feel sorry you were Clinton supporters and your lack of ability to read. On another note, I guess I should start rallying my support around the presumptive nominee.

I know somepeole people are easy mislead but they should read and understand the facts. if you do this Obama would be getting your vote. He appears to be telling the truth I know you guys would say he has doing nothing but he has showed better judgment then Clintion and McCain. I could go on but you guys should do the research yourself and if you vote on facts Obama would get your vote.

Vote Obama not only for you but other to.

Ex-Hillary supporter   April 6th, 2008 7:06 pm ET

He should never have been appointed to that position, it is just another example of how unethical the Clinton campaign is. I will be duped no longer, she can "misspeak" as much as she wants.
She has lost my vote for good, Jesse Ventura is coming across as a more attractive option for Pete's sake.

Oh, how about inspiring and bringing in millions of new people into the process. Millions more that are now really paying attention to what our government is doing. Even if Obama doesn't win the nomination or the election he has already done more for this country than any other politician out there: He's show people that they can make a difference and that they can participate and that they can work for change.
All those people he's inspired so far. Gee, I wonder what he could do from the Oval Office when he's on a global instead of national platform.

re: maya,

its people like you that keep making others to havoc hatred for Hillary.

This is Hillary's own problem, Obama did nothing about it. Why do you attack him now?

He is definitely NOT a media creation. This man is really talented to the point that he invites everyone on his side so if the media falls for him because he is good, he should be given the credit.

I heard you people scream on here about how the media should vet him with the Rev Wright, Rezko and Muslim, and Not wearing the Flag pin and all sorts of issues. The media did go after him and cost him a few elections but in the end he has recovered nicely…..Hillary can't do the same because she doesn't have what it takes.

He is not a media creation, he is not affirmation action…Jesse Jackson and AL Sharpton etc would have been. Ask what does Obama have different than all these people including Hillary and you'll see why he's doing so well.

Donald from SC   April 6th, 2008 7:07 pm ET

I don't believe it took this long for him to step down. This is a good move for the Clinton campaign as to shore-up the damage done by Penn. I am NOT a Clinton supporter, but this was one lamebrain thing to do.

I'm glad Sen. Clinton decided to drop Penn as chief advisor: he certainly had a conflict of interest. Also, the company is not really Penn, Schoen, and Berland, as Schoen and Berland were bought out and Penn sold the company to PR giant Burson-Marsteller of which he is also CEO. Nevertheless, Penn has a long and excellent record of working as a pollster for both Clintons and the democratic party. Despite what O-bots claim, Sen. Clinton's opposition to the Columbian Free Trade bill is credible: in 2005 she voted against CAFTA.

Obama 08 from Hillside NJ   April 6th, 2008 7:10 pm ET

she is a liar, will do anything to get elected even throwing her own people under the bus (although I would have done it a long time ago) Pretty funny actually…she made an earlier critique on Obama about his desk being unorganized and it appears that he is better organized, prepared and will be ready on DAY 1. Stay in it Hillary…i enjoy seeing you lose the remainder of your dignity and self respect. You're going down and the Red Face adulterer is going down with you. The campaign didn't fire him, he step down, however they will still be paying $7.5 million of donar money into his coffers. She didn't have the guts to fire him, he does have the dirt on her. What good is it to step down when he will still provide polling data and other campaign idea's? This is a move done out of desperation to look as if they took the high road, but they didn't. Hillary is once again correct, "words matter", and her chicken are comming home to rooste. I always learned from my parents before you speak ill of anyone ensure you double check your closet, Hillary should triple check her closets, because they are full of skeletons!

B. Casey in the eye and told him point blanc, that Obama had received lot of cooporate funding in his campaign. The insinuation, that it is only Bill and Hillary that had got the cooperate funds, flew through the window!Otherwise voters will be fooled that Obama does no get dollars from cooporation! I note that Obama or his staff has not jumped on Penn the way the Clinton tag team did on Obama's staffer. She set it up perfectly by saying, "now if my campaign did something like that….'. Still, they have thus far shown restraint.

Well, meeting with a Colombian to lobby for CAFTA is a bit worse than speculating that Obama would not change a trade agreement.

I hope that the Obama campaign can afford not to roll in the mud with the Clinton's the rest of the way!

However, Clinton supporters will still whine about Wright, and this or that, clinging to the Clinton mystique to the bitter end!

She didn't fire him. All she did was change his job title. The other networks are reporting that he will still advise the campaign just not as the cheif strategist. This is just a smoke screen to fool the unions into thinking she's not involved in the colombian trade deal. A colombian spokesperson said that during the meeting he could not tell if Penn was representing his firm or the Clinton Campaign which means Penn did not distenguish between the two. The Clintons are very much involved and new exactly what he was doing. I mean why would he risk a campaign job paying millions for a meeting with the colombians that were only paying his firm 300,000. They just didn't want him to get caught.

Steve   April 6th, 2008 8:55 pm ET

The phone rang for Hillary. She didn't answer. The problem she was being called about had to quit before she could decide what to do.

I'm dumbfounded she had the poor judgement to hire this guy. I am dumfounded that he was so politically inept that he couldn't understand that talking to the Colombians would jeopardize Hillary's campaign. I am dumbfounded that Hillary didn't kick his fat butt to the curb 30 seconds after she heard what he did.

Maybe there was a backroom deal. Maybe Hillary said, "I'll let you resign, but if you don't resign immediately, I'll fire you in public." That was a poor deal if it happened. She should have busted him hard for this.

Now there will always be a question in voter's minds about whether or not Hillary has the guts to stand up to powerful lobbyists. In this case, she didn't. Not good. Not good at all.

I am a supporter of Hillary but Mr Penn had to resign.
He was working on behalf of his firm on promoting the free trade deal that Hillary wis apposed to. It was a conflict of inerest.
It is in no way the same as Mr Obama lying to voters in Ohio saying he would re-negotiate nafta and his surogate was telling the Canadian Government Mr Obama is lying to the voters. Do not worry he would not re-negotiate nafta

Heath, Bronx, NY   April 6th, 2008 9:06 pm ET

I am under the impression that if he thought that she could win he probably would have exercised some restraint before becoming a rouge strategist. It is clear that she cannot control her finances, her people or her message. She lies about sniper fire and releases her taxes on Friday afternoon in order to avoid them being critically looked at. With respect to the taxes, we want to know where the money came from last year. Apparently, you did not provide a detailed tax report for last year like you did for the rest of the previous years. Mrs. Clinton, do the Country and democrats a favor and end this farse of a campaign. I would truly be frightened if she were elected to the highest office and she could not run her own campaign effectively.

It is sad all the hate which exists on these blogs. I am not a Clinton supporter but am still feeling bad how this thing continues to degrade.

I began seeing both candidates as an historic possibility. Each day that goes by I become more and more saddened that our first chance of having a woman president is overwhelmed by distortions, lies, attacks, and poor judgement.

Maybe some day we will have a woman in the whitehouse — there are many qualified women in politics. Unfortunately this chance was squandered by Hillary who must take responsibility for all that has happened.

I believe after all this long primary, we now know what a blessing it would be to have someone in the whitehouse with integrity and character, who is in public service to inspire all Americans to stand up and be part of their government by holding our elected officials accountable. Obama will do this through transparency and bring the political discussion before the people. I'm 62, white female with two precious granddaughters and pray for a safe and secure future.

I believe us baby boomers should step aside and trust in this next generation of young people to chart a different future, a better future.

God Bless Obama and God Bless America.

johiob   April 6th, 2008 9:10 pm ET

There are so many uninformed Obama supporters spreading hate and lies. They should grow up and remember that the Clintons' are dedicated public servants. If Obama supporters continue the line of blind hatred towards Hillary, they stand to lose should Obama be fortunate enough to win the nomination. Obama himself is a likeable person, with thin and exargarated resume, therefore he is the weaker candidate against John McCain come November.

LOL! So it's alright for Penn to continue to advise the Clinton campaign after the shady double talk with the NAFTA dealings? Why not cut ties with Penn altogether? Makes no sense. Then again, it does make sense. The Clintons want to keep Penn close so he can continue to get those NAFTA dealings completed. After all, it was Bill Clinton that put NAFTA into progress in the first place. The Clintons are allergic to being honest and their whole campaign revolves around fooling stupid and uninformed voters.

No he did not realize this on his own. The Clintons pushed for him to resign he would have never done this on his own. It would have been more effective had they came out and said they fired him followed a press release stating so. This makes it look like he left on his own accord and that the Clintons gave him the option. Truth be know , Penn made the Clinton's look stupid and ill informed as to what their people were doing more than once and this was the final straw. Now it recovery time and of course time for statements of deparation as Hillary did when she stated she should be give points for the time it takes her to get ready each day and how hard she works. No one cares what you look like, or how your hair is done, what we care about is what comes out of your mouth. Too much double speak for me is all I can say.

Now that the Clintons have released their Tax returns and CNN,MSNBC,FOX and other media outlets have the release on their desks!,being scrutinised, dissected and analysed. Good for the media to do that.It is now time for Obama to log in his time details in Chicago for as long as it takes. It is also appropriate that Obama's joint Tax returns be exposed and treated the same way they have handled the the Clinton's return. This is a fair request.Let Mr.Tim Russet give us the details-I think is more objective compared to others. The sooner the better, for this split Nation(politically and others!)

Not a good way to run a campaign and presidency because that's what this is a precursor. Not good.

Also, this is not about Obama. Solely Clinton and her camp.

Notice how Obama has not attacked her with all the mishaps going on in her camp….bosnia, hosptial misinfo, and now Penn to name a few. He just speak about the issues. Think about that.

This is mark Penn's lucky day. He sold his soul to the Colombian governebt and the clinton campaign, and now he is off the hook on both counts.

Did Obama "fire" his campaign aid for meeting with Canada re: the NAFTA issue?? No, didn't think so. More Obama people expecting the use of double standards again….

They did the right thing, letting Penn go. But it just shows how much Clinton's campaign has gotten out of control.

That they would have used someone as chief strategist who had other conflicting interests like this is simply beyond me. I cannot believe that Clinton did not know of those conflicting interests, and what poor judgement to allow that to continue. Or if she did not know, then shame on her for not doing the appropriate checking.

Either way, it shows still more dramatic evidence of her poor management of her campaign and her staff. And that speaks pretty poorly for her ability to manage other large, complex enterprises. A
