the comment was made by a Senator who's a self-acknowleged obama supporter and the call to denounce it is from a Senator and McCain supporter. To pretend it doesn't potentially 'help' obama is insincere at best, the point is to put it 'out there' even if you take it back later. It's standard old school politics on behalf of the candidate of c h a n g e. He has to try to tarnish a war hero and POW's record somehow, someway and this is how you begin.

As a Viet Nam vet (Air Force) I don't feel that Sen. Obama has to apologize for anything that he didn't say. I remember when Obama entered the Senate and McCain ask him to work on some legislation with him. Obama asked that he check with the Democratic leadership and McCain blew his top and called Sen. Obama all sorts of vile names. Did McCain apologize for his outburst? No he didn't and hasn't to this day. If McCain skin is that thin, he should go home to mommy and leave the game to grownups.

I know Sen. Rockefeller (and I am a Republican). He is a good man (I disagree with him on things) and he is honorable. The problem is that he got caught up in the illogical hysteria of campaign hyperbole and, combined with a lack of personal experience with military service (not a slap - a statement of fact), stepped into to it with his comments.

One can serve honorably and have a different view. Similarly, one can not serve and be a good, patriotic person. The problem is when we get caught up in the BS and forget that we are all supposed to be on the same team.

I'm not a McCain supporter, but even I know that you can't attack a soldier for doing his job. McCain performed his duties commendibly and he should be treated no less than the soldier he is.

That said, I don't believe having survived a war makes one qualified for the position of POTUS. I don't think he should be president, but I gratefully thank John for his service to our country.

I wish the media would cover Obama in more detail as I wouldn't have voted for him knowing what I know now and much of what I know is not from the usual media outlets.
I voted for Obama thinking he was about change but this was before his lies came out , his horrible stereotype remarks about whites.
Don't hold your breath for Obama to denounce this, he hasn't denounced Rev wright fully yet nor has he denounced other hateful and sometimes racist language from his supporters.
The more and more I find out about Obama the more I do not ever want to see him in the white house and if the media did their job and reported fully about Obama then neither would most of this country.

With McCain, that margin disappears. NJ voters do not care about Iraq war as much as they do about the big pharmaceutical and big financial companies closing their doors. But it's not his responsibility to denounce him, as he is not on Obama's campaign, nor was he speaking on Obama's behalf. Facts?:

Iraq was never a threat to the U.S. and with its limited GDP, would have never been a threat; ever. Thats a fact; even with WMD, the threat we would present is far to overwhelming.

Al Qeada would be crushed by the larger Shia Militas in Iraq and they could actually find them; they are simply not allowed to mobilize. That; sadly is a fact.

Iran's only real threat is economic and its the sole worry we have when leaving Iraq. Really, really; we are dyeing over a possible 15% (guess) fluctuation in the economy.

The United States is under threat were we are not; that threat is only growing by the CIA estimates I've seen.

Is Obama responsible for all people who support him? If he is, then he has to talk with a lot of people. Is that realistic? No, not really; not for anyone. If Obama asked him to say it, then it show that there is cause for concern. I doubt that there is anyone in the Obama campaign that asked for that statement.

To ask Obama to appoligize for everything that had been said is foolish and unrealistic. Take it in stride McCain... I thought that you could tolerate more than that.

It is a different experience with a culture, where you are thousands of feet in the air using laser guided missles (which DID exist and WERE used) – then to be captured and tourtured.

I'm not sure how most people in the US would feel about a guantanamo bay terrorist suspect being tortured (like wat,erboarding), if there was one who was regularly blowing up towns that had military bases in them... well, if they actually survived my personal reaction to that, when they got back home, I doubt they could say the held a perspective that wasn't based in anything but utter disgust for me and my people.
So... McCain may be a hero and suffered horribly, but I doubt he can make decisions about current enemies without that experience leveraging the outcome substancially. – then again, he is about a million years old and may barely remember more than what he's had written in speeches for him.

The most difficult thing to do in our country is to criticize ill-conceived wars and foreign policy without opening one's self to charges of being unpatriotic. Rockefeller could do well to think about how he expresses such concerns. Even if a US military action, like Vietnam or Iraq, is stupid, morally questionable, and a disaster for our country, one has to realize that the men and women in our armed forces are risking and losing their lives. They need to believe that what they are doing is justifiable. This is one of the many costs of such a stupid move as Iraq, to waste the heroism and sacrifice of our armed forces in a "war" that costs so much to the combatants and innocent victims. I wonder if McCain is so onboard with the Iraq fiasco because he was never able to come to terms with his own sacrifices in Vietnam. There are many parallels between Vietnam and Iraq. It was extraordinarily painful for many combatants to hear that their fighting was immoral or useless, not to mention coming home to a less than enthusiastic welcome. It is unacceptably painful for many Americans to ever admit that the country can do wrong with it's policies and armed forces. One has to draw the painful conclusion that America is great because of what we do, not because we are inherently infallible. If what we do is wrong or stupid, then we must stand tall and admit it, and apologize first to the men and women who fought the fight for people like Dick Cheney and his ilk. That being said, Rockefeller's comments are detestable.

As a republican in WV I have had to listen to Jay Rockefeller's mouth since the 70's.He first was against coal mining ,then when he saw it was a mistake,he did a quick 180 on the subject.I personally have been thinking about voting for Obama in Nov.remarks like this don't help.McCain deserves the respect of all Americans.You might not agree with his policies but we all owe him respect.If any candidate wants to win WV they need to get the NRA and gun owners endorsement.

People are getting so out of hand in this election. I'm not a supporter of John McCain, far from it, but I read these blogs just about everyday and I just can't believe some of the nonsense. I don't think anyone doubts (except for the guy making the idiotic comments above) that John McCain is a war hero. We need to start talking about the issues.
Could we PLEASE start talking about how we are going to fix our economy. Could we PLEASE start talking about how we are going to better educate our children. Hey Debby - the Obama campaign did not make these comments, Sen Rockefeller did. And while all of us support our troops who fight in harms way, patriotism does not mean that you blindly support stupid decisions made by our government to send our troops to war in the first place.

I have seen no valid reason to question Sen Obama's patriotism. He has simply made clear that as Presidient, he commits to THINK SENSIBLY before acting - as opposed to the callous and costly manner that our current administration has.

I can only hope that Sen McCain, if elected, would do the same.
