Rice said Tuesday she's not interested in being McCain's running mate.

(CNN) - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice dismissed rumors on Tuesday she is angling to be John McCain's running mate, telling reporters she plans to head back to Stanford University.

"I very much look forward to watching this campaign and voting as a voter," she said. "I have a lot of work to do and then I'll happily go back to Stanford."

Rice served as Provost at Stanford from 1993-1999, and remains a tenured professor there.

"Senator McCain is an extraordinary American," Rice also said of the presumptive Republican nominee. "A really outstanding leader and obviously a great patriot."

Too bad Condi Rice won't run. The woman is totally brilliant and has awesome credentials. I think she'd make an excellent vice-president.....or president.

No Obamination in the Presidency!

Job well done   April 8th, 2008 7:38 pm ET

Condi Rice has served her country very, very, well. I would like to see her in washington but, I understand why she would not want to. (to much of the Cronie net work)

Best of Luck to what ever she does in the future. She will go down in the books as one who served and not one that wanted to be served.

Thank You, Miss Rice!!

For all of the comments about Condi splitting the black vote- ummm NOT! We hate seeing American Soldiers killed, Homes foreclosed, Gas prices at an astronomical rate, and the economy in shambles just like everyone else!!!! You think this doesn't affect us??? Why would we vote for a Bush puppet when we knew better than to vote for Bush the first 2 times? Please don't insult our intelligence

Obama '08 but will settle for Hillary!!!!!

NickNas   April 8th, 2008 7:19 pm ET

I think working UNDER a twit with only 1/100th of her IQ has been enough for ole Condi. Let her go back to Stanford so she can hang out with SMART people for a change.

McSame just may be as stupid as Bush!

She is won't Be a VP for McCain... That's for Sure.... Maybe she wants to Back, Borack!!!
She would have to go against the Majority of the Blacks, if she went for the VP position for THEGOP..???????????? McCain ... Not Sure! Still what do I know???

JF   April 8th, 2008 6:38 pm ET

For all the people that compare McCain to Bush – read some history and facts – not a good argument. I would suggest something more logical for the presidential race – I don't think Obama has a chance anyway but this kind of argument that can be so easily contradicted is not going to help. I actually thouht people were exaggerating when they said Obama supporters could not make logical arguments and were just a cult – well I see where they got the cult idea, the comments here look ridiculous.

Dr. Rice would be an awesome Vice President. She is brilliant, non-political, and more experienced with our Middle Eastern (and whole Foreign Policy) issues than any of the other candidates.

We lose great people (i.e. Colin Powell) because they don't (and I agree with them) want their personal lives, families, past utterances, and any iota of of their past lives discussed, distorted, and attacked by the ridiculous political machine that dominates our system of chosing leaders.

Dr. Rice, General Powell and the rest of the great Americans who have done wonderful service to our country deserve better than that, and I applaud their decisions to stay above politics.

Shannon from Washington   April 8th, 2008 6:18 pm ET

At least she recognizes her insignificance. It would be great if Senator Clinton would do the same.

Ito, Yokosuka Japan   April 8th, 2008 6:07 pm ET

Personnally,

I think they should do like they did in the old days. The VP slot should go to person who got second place. How about that? A Republican President and a Democratic VP (or vice verse).

Jennfizz   April 8th, 2008 6:05 pm ET

Condaleeza Rice performed the functions of the job description for position of secretary of state, as did Madeline Albright. Aside from the MAJOR faux pas that she was on the wrong side of the table in the decision to invade Iraq, she has done a credible job. However, other than the fact that she has the stamp of approval of the Republican party, I know of no significant accomplishment that distinguishes her performance in this position – so why would I or anyone else for that matter, cast a vote for her?

That's too bad.

Condi is a woman, she's black, and she's a hard working American Patriot. She embodies the American dream more than any candidate now seakinig the office of President. She is frank and forward and she is smarter than Obama, McCain, and Clinton together by at least 137 IQ points.

It's a shame more people like her don't run for President. As for VP, I wouldn't want to be McCain's VP either. But then again. with his age and health problems, it could be a back door for her into the Oval Office. Think about, Condi. Take one for the country and do it. God knows we need people like you at the helm.

Rice is probably the smartest person currently in politics, regardless of political party.

Too smart to want to be VP.

McCain will win handily in the Fall because HRC and Obama are destroying each other. For that, I will be eternally grateful to Obama.

McCain just needs to choose a running mate that won't get in his way.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   April 8th, 2008 5:10 pm ET

Ms. Rice was not able to carry out her duties as Secretary of State, how could she even be mentioned as a possible candidate for Vice President? She approved of our invasion of Iraq and knew there was no evidence of WMD.

Tony Z- MD   April 8th, 2008 3:42 pm ET

An intelligent woman who just is being used by an incompetent administration. Academia is where she does best.

For those who compare her to Sen. Clinton are way off track. She has endured true danger in this country. As a young woman she lost friends that were bombed in a church. This was here in America.

Jeff   April 8th, 2008 3:34 pm ET

The woman who knew about the threat of attacks prior to 9/11, because the Clinton administration handed her their intelligence, who then chose to ignore the threats, in fact, within the timeframe attacks were expected, a NORAD standown was allowed to happen due to training exercises.

Condoleeza Rice was a large part of the biggest failure in American Defense ever, leading to the loss of thousands of American lives and nearly half a trillion dollars. All she had to do was pay attention to the information handed to her, but she instead chose to ignore it. If Condi were to "serve" as VP, we might as well allow confirmed terrorists to "serve" in the Senate.

Now we know   April 8th, 2008 3:32 pm ET

The reason most news agencies won't report anything bad about Obama, even the truth, is because lots of them are getting death threats if they do.

Sen. Obama is critical of Sen. McCain for not providing a specific date of departure from Iraq. This demonstrates a rudimentary lack of military knowledge on the part of the freshman senator. No one can responsibly give such a timeline nor should they. Gen. Petraeus has wisely stated that warfare, particularly involving terrorism, is not a matter of arithmetic but of calculus. While the majority of Americans are understandably frustrated with the cost of life and treasure, they also appreciate the challenges and consequences at stake.

El Gordo   April 8th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

Bush, Rumsfeld, Cheney, and other heavy-lifters in the Administration pushed Rice around a lot. The only logical reason that Rice will not be on the ticket is because she will get flack from the Black community for stopping Obama.

As a member of the forgotten minority soon to be the majority I will not vote for Obama. My vote goes to the one person that believed in their country from day one. Senator John McCain.

Condi will suffer the same fate as I have for being a conservative Hispanic. The liberals will stop her from seeking higher office.

Liberals cannot handle successful minorities because it destroys their pre-conceived notion that we cannot make it without their help.
And it undermines their causes. Woe is me the poor (substitute your favorite minority)., The government has to help me.

I don't think he would pick her as his VP unless she has a lobbyist background. Anyway, he has no chance of winning once the facts about him come out. Let’s see, he wants 100 more years in Iraq, doesn’t know about the economy and likes to chase lobbyist skirt. He has the worst qualities of the past two presidents we can do without.

Tyrone Brown, Seattle, WA   April 8th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

On the surface a McCain/Rice ticket seemed like a good idea, but then you saw it for what it really was. A desperate attempt by the Republicans to "create" this image of a party that represents the changing / diverse demographics of America. Condi is smart, she of all people understands that her presence on the ticket "does not a diverse party make." Get the "Welcome " sign out Stanford, Professor Rice is headed back.

The U.S. is already on the wrong track and Rice helped put us there. We should be investing our time and money in science and technology instead of war. John McCain has no innovative plans for the future of America and without that there will be no forward progress. Why does America want a president that will continue to take us backwards. We need to think about our children by planning now for their future to be competitive in the fast moving world of science and technology. Education is the only answer, not war.

mep   April 8th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

A warmonger and a war criminal!...What a combo...Please put her on your ticket McCain...Isn't everyone fed up with this Bush regime yet???

ben   April 8th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

To Darth Vadick
Some of these blogs are stupid. some are terribly hatefull. Some are actually reasonable comments. YOURS IS ACTUALLY DISGUSTING
Where do you get off calling Mrs. Rice a wretched evil woman?
You must have a very sick mind. She is not anything except an intelegent
woman doing the best she can under the pressure of a lousy president.
That is her job! Would you expect the secretary of state to run around the world telling everyone she was working for a moron?

Mike   April 8th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

It is amazing that United flight 93 with the heros that sacrificed and took down this plane in Shanksville are being dishonored by Obama's presence in that state. They lost their lives to protect the capital from being hit by that plane and Obama wants to be in that very same capital as president when he and his church blame America for 9/11.

In only 7 years we have already forgotten our fallen countrymen. What a disgrace.

Tom in S.A.   April 8th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

She's never wanted it, has been saying it for months. What has she done that is so evil? Oh yea, main stream media said it so it must be true, fools!

Michael Lorton, Virginia   April 8th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

Wise decision...........because the greatest scholars are not usually the wisest people.

WallyWutMD   April 8th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

I completely agree with you Herman. Many people admire Condi, but wish that she wasn't stuck in Bush's administration. Bush used increadible talents like her and Powell to help sell America a phony bill of goods. Powell left the Bush administration on his own terms after realizing he had been used. I think Condi is smart enough to avoid all the "straight talk" comming from Bush and McCain. She won't be made into a spectacle like Powell was. I believe that she'll be casting her vote for Obama this fall, judging from the response she gave when they questioned her on Reverend Wright. Wouldn't it be great if she actually came out and endorsed him?!

Sam   April 8th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

I wish she would run... I wish she would be McCain's VP candidate... It would be the quickest way to ensure a Dem victory in November. PLEASE RUN CONDI RICE... Skip all the campaigning and we can just claim the Dem victory now.

David Bowman   April 8th, 2008 1:18 pm ET

Darth Vadik has great point about wretched evil creatures (although his evil-inspired screen name might lend a certain bias). Condo Rice is not just a disgrace to her race, or to women – she's a disgrace to human beings all around the world.

Pat Kelly   April 8th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Puh-lease run, Condi, run! Let's have as the Republican Veep candidate the National Security Advisor, who weeks before 9/11 read the briefing "Bin Laden determined to strike inside America", and immediately acted by doing.... absolutely nothing.

She is a complete failure as both a NSA and Secretary of State. Name one single way in which the US is better off either as perception or in real terms as the result of anything she has done. She is the failure of Bush incarnate, and even mistakenly refered to GWB as her husband.

John, Milwaukee, WI   April 8th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

We don't NEED any more flied rice, you plick!

This lap dog of King George would COMPLETELY destroy ANY chance for the senile, warmonger McShane to get into the White House!

Arlene Borg   April 8th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

Unqualified. Won't be very welcomed back in the Stanford area!

Rose Spense   April 8th, 2008 1:12 pm ET

At first I supported Hillary, then when I started to listen to Obama and compare, there was no contest. First of all, Hillary tell too many lies and she is not even i the whitehouse yet. She also have a fake and not genuiene look about her.

Rose fron NY.

Choice   April 8th, 2008 1:12 pm ET

Give her a break

DJ in TX   April 8th, 2008 1:11 pm ET

I have much respect for Dr Rice, but I disagree with her policies. I don't think the Bush administration allowed her to really use her talents. She seemed to just really push the Bush administrations agenda, basically rubber stamping it. Again, this is a remarkable woman, but I don't think she would really help Senator McCain. Although very qualified (to me more than Senator Clinton), she is too closely tied to President Bush and Senator McCain seems to be backing off the Bush theme somewhat.

Redd   April 8th, 2008 1:10 pm ET

Darth Not-- one thing Condy did was successfully spell words
and so far we have not seen that mushroom she was spouting
out loud about...

Al   April 8th, 2008 1:09 pm ET

Ms Rice knows that the NAACP and the NABJ would brand her a traitor to her people if she were to run and split Sen.Obama's African American vote in the General election. McCain will have great difficulty finding a principled African American to run as his VP.

Chris-Seattle   April 8th, 2008 1:03 pm ET

I like the Stanford idea and she's right she does have a lot of work to do especially trying to use a bucket with GWB's face on it to put out the forest fire in the middle east. After her NSA tenure, the WMD debacle, Bush cronyism and her lack of personality I wouldn't trust her walking my dog!

Lizzy   April 8th, 2008 1:03 pm ET

The media is really making me sick during this campaign. The media has decided who "they" want to be the candidates, and then the news is totally slanted to try to make it happen. Does CNN (or any of the networks) think it makes them "cool" to so biasedly support "the first black" or better yet "the first black woman"? You might try using your brain instead of your ratings service to determine who the better candidates are. Better yet, you might try just reporting the news fairly and letting the people make their own decisions.

Being a Notre Dame alum, I would really like to like Condoleezza Rice, but she hasn't exactly shown me anything to make me think she's got the ability to be the VP. I personally don't think she's been worth a darn as Secretary of State as she has been totally ineffective. And she's been a total sell-out, because if you research her past, she's not who you would expect to find on the Bush team in the first place. She sold her soul for a "title" when she joined up with this administration. I'll bet you big money if Obama is elected, she'll switch teams in a heartbeat.

Jim Mosier   April 8th, 2008 1:02 pm ET

Reaching the pinnacle of mediocrity each day she wakes up and says "Oh wait, I am the Secretary of State, hee hee hee. Time to buy new shoes." Horror grips America. The surgical procedure of dumbing down of America is nearly complete. Let us eat cake... Stanford Alums collectively grit their teeth when her name is mentioned on television.

NY Undecided   April 8th, 2008 1:01 pm ET

This is probably best for McCain and the Republicans. Its hard enough that John McCain will have to carry the burdon of supporting an unpopular war. Rice would only add to that burdon, since she was instrumental in "cooking the intelligence" that got us intot he war in the first place. At least Powell had the integrity to resign his post as Sec. of State – apparently she has none.

SPQR753   April 8th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

I would vote for :
Obama for President,
Condi for Vice President (after all, once she was a Democrat),
Colin Powell as Secretary of Defense and
Rev. Wright as White House pastor (a new Cabinet position).

Anybody who does not like this team is a declared racist...

John Starnes Tampa Florida   April 8th, 2008 12:58 pm ET

She was crucial in deceiving Congress and the American people into believing all the hype about Iraq and WMDs, just she now repeats that shame with Iran, which consistently is cleared by the IAEA. She is a war criminal plain and simple with no business being considered for ANY post in our badly damaged government.

Tom Van Spronsen   April 8th, 2008 12:57 pm ET

Wow, so it is true, only Democrats watch CNN.

ED   April 8th, 2008 12:55 pm ET

A Female Dick Cheney to partner with a Geoge Bush clone[Mccain]. We will be at war until there is no more America. Can you imagine these two war mongers hiding or not reading documents that were made available before an attack. It would be great to have an accomplice you could depend on to deceive the american people. GEORGE BUSH ADMIN SEQUEL.

JHR Arizona   April 8th, 2008 12:54 pm ET

Thank God, she says nothing except what she is told to read. Puppets

Gorbashov, Long Beach, Ca.   April 8th, 2008 12:50 pm ET

Pls. Sen. McSame choose her.

Pls. link yourself to this current corrupt Adm. and his/her failed policies!

Talk about tone deaf!

GOBAMA

Jan   April 8th, 2008 12:48 pm ET

What a disaster that would be..McCaines best bet would be Romney,

Romney is best for economy.

Richard, St. Paul, MN   April 8th, 2008 12:47 pm ET

Awwww..... I was hoping to see a Charles Manson / Condi Rice option on the GOP ticket this November. Bummer....

marv. g   April 8th, 2008 12:43 pm ET

please run condi, dems can definitely link mccain to bush politics if u run as veep. i don't believe mccain can beat obama anyway, but if he runs with condi, he can't beat hilary.

Willy   April 8th, 2008 12:36 pm ET

She'd be a great VP & President.

Willam from Texas   April 8th, 2008 12:33 pm ET

Thank goodness

Theresa   April 8th, 2008 12:32 pm ET

MCcain/Rice 08 Good new!!!

Darth Vadik, CA   April 8th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

Name one thing, just one thing, that this wretched evil woman has done that was succesfull, and then compare her to Madeline Albreight.

Have we forgoten that once upon a time, some of our cabinet positions actually yielded positive results, and it wasn't under these creatures we have right now.

McCain-in-4, Clarksburg, MD   April 8th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

This could cynically be a trial balloon, or it could have been Dan Senor and others in the Bush Administration strong-arming John McCain with the all the grace & efficiency learned from Enron, Katrina, Financial & Housing Markets Collapse. It all depends on your point of view.

If memory serves, Ms.Rice was the Richard Clarke's gatekeeper and kept him from DOING HIS JOB by stonewalling Mr Clark's many efforts to report alarming findings to the new President. That alone would tank John McCain's pursuit of the Presidency.

voice that matters   April 8th, 2008 12:29 pm ET

Rice is equal to the task.

She is better than Mccain.

Oh.. I for one will encourage mccain to choose a blk vp if Obama is the nominee. And Obama should choose a white female vp to counter attack mccain.

It has to be mixed this time for the white house. Mccain will have a lot to gain if he chose a black vp and Obama will gain a little if he chose a white female vp.

That case the race will be very tight again. But Obama will come out narrow win over Mccain come November.
No Hillary she can't win at this point.

HP Boston   April 8th, 2008 12:28 pm ET

Yes and we were dismissing Rice, too many carbs!

Darth Vadik, CA   April 8th, 2008 12:28 pm ET

I keep telling you people, McCains VP "choice" is going to be the Prince od Darkness himself Dick Cheney.

Snap Falkenberg   April 8th, 2008 12:26 pm ET

That's what McCain needs, a war criminal on the ticket. You betcha!

Bob Stephens   April 8th, 2008 12:25 pm ET

Thank goodness, that is all we need is two war mongers on the same ticket.......

Tom   April 8th, 2008 12:21 pm ET

Speculation speculation speculation.

Eveyone makes out every little move to be more than it is.

If she attends a meeting with conservative leaders, she must be cozying up to them for the VP slot.

If she announces her intention to go back to Stanford, she must be hiding something.

Why doesn't anyone ever believe things are the way they seem? Not everyone has an alterior motive. McCain is the most straightforward candidate this country has seen in 50 years – the man isn't capable of an alterior motive.

Trey   April 8th, 2008 12:20 pm ET

She is such a scapegoat, blame me for everything its all my fault and she has no self respect

I hope you run and sign the death warrant for Republicans in 2008

red state   April 8th, 2008 12:19 pm ET

God, please don't get a vp offer, ill drop my support for Mccain that instant. He needs are far right evangelical leader who is also good with the economy and can win over more of the conservative base. He doesn't need Condi Rice... thats just more for the democrats to gripe over how similar he is to Bush.

adam   April 8th, 2008 12:17 pm ET

Stanford's probably hoping for a run to keep her away from campus.

Ryan   April 8th, 2008 12:16 pm ET

Speaking as a resident who lives close to Stanford, please stay away, Condi. We really don't like you here.

Herman LA, CA   April 8th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

Good choice I just hope you stick to it Condoleezza Rice don't get your self in Bush & McCain mess any longer leave with the dignity that you have and you will be most respected because all they are trying to do is use you against your brother Barack and to try and split the black vote.

Obama 08!!!

elmerg   April 8th, 2008 12:10 pm ET

McBush/Yoo 2008

A pair of Johns who love torture!

Amy in Iowa   April 8th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

Condoleeza and Hillary are like peas in a pod. The difference is that Hillary has more experience as a professional liar.

Dominique   April 8th, 2008 12:02 pm ET

Good for her... She is not going to be used to destroy Barack's chances of winning. Many people of color would hate her for that. Rice is a very smart woman. She is going to also vote for OBAMA, same as Powell. why? Because he is brillant and has everything else this country needs.

Lancaster John   April 8th, 2008 12:02 pm ET

Thank you Condoleeza. It is comforting to know that the least effect National Security Advisor in in recent memory will NOT be in the running for VP. Lets hope that John McCain will pick a moderate who is younger, intelligent, and not a warmonger to be running mate. Please pick a candidate who will also be acceptable to Democrats because if Obama gets the Democratic nomination there will be a lot of Democrats looking to vote for McCain.

Give us a break   April 8th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

That is sad. She really needs to be the VP and then the first women president. Dare to dream America.

RealityKing   April 8th, 2008 12:00 pm ET

Once again Condi is showing us how smart she really is...

ALBO   April 8th, 2008 11:59 am ET

I must say again:

It is irrelevant what both McCain and Rice say today regarding the VP
issue. This for the time being is only a TEST BALLOON launched to calibrate the potential voters reaction !!

TOM ALBO

mike   April 8th, 2008 11:59 am ET

Please make her sign it in blood – I don't trust anything this woman says.

vince - phoenix   April 8th, 2008 11:58 am ET

NO... PLEASE, CONDI..... RUN...!

That would make this SOOOOO much easier...

1) you are an "unacceptable republican" to many in the part. (not MY words... It's what was said when COLIN POWEL considered...)

2) you would link McCain to Bush, which would be like pennies from Heaven....

Please, Condi.... RUN !!!

kathleen retired Professional w/woman for obama   April 8th, 2008 11:58 am ET

We don't care. Rice is "ONE OF THEM," It won't matter one way
or another who HE chooses!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The dumbest of Democrats will vote for MCCain and he knows
it. It would like shooting yourself in the foot if you vote for Hillary
or McCain, both liars and opportunists.

norb   April 8th, 2008 11:56 am ET

Insead of going back to Sanford. Maybe she should get a job at a deuling piano bar.

Doug, Florida   April 8th, 2008 11:56 am ET

To bad for McBush. He can't win anyway.

Go OBAMA 08

Joe   April 8th, 2008 11:54 am ET

Perhaps Clinton wants to bowl you for your tenured position.

Chuck in Oregon   April 8th, 2008 11:54 am ET

Good move as far as I am concerned. She is too aligned with Bush and she truly does not want to be on a loosing team.

Jorge   April 8th, 2008 11:54 am ET

It's not like McCain will win anyways.... :D
