The McCain campaign has weighed in on Hillary Clinton's call for President Bush to boycott the opening ceremonies of this year's Olympic Games in Beijing.

"Senator McCain believes the President should evaluate the situation as it evolves, and ought to keep his options open," Brooke Buchanan, McCain's traveling press secretary, told CNN. "He continues to condemn the brutal oppression that the Chinese inflicted on the Tibetans and protestors around the world."

hey Wisconsin, he's probably waiting for his racist reverend to give him some advice on this.
The Olympics never should have been awarded to China. I agree that Bush should sit out the opening and closing ceremonies. Just like most of the other world leaders are.
It's up to the athletes individually to either attend or boycott.

Michael, Canada   April 9th, 2008 7:35 pm ET

President Bush should attend the opening ceremonies. The olympics should not be used to issue political statements. This is a time to celebrate athletics. btw, how come Americans are not protesting the Israeli occupation of Palestine? Can anyone spell hypocrite?

Dennis   April 9th, 2008 7:15 pm ET

Wow, some people need to really get a life. I'm amazed by the personal attacks voiced on this and other posts about the candidates. Especially the Obama haters. You guys, don't get upset because he's connected to the public in a way no other candidate has in decades. Anybody that truly knows anything about politics knows that the president cannot do anything without the congress. Obama's major strength is how he connects with people. This is going to be valuable in helping to bring back respect and goodwill to the U.S. Bush has damaged the reputation of the U.S. in ways that will be hard to repair. In the next administration, you are going to need a people person to help bring the congress together and deal with other world leaders. Do you really think McCain is that person? Hillary? Yes, he doesn't have as much experience as those two, but then neither one of them has ever ran a state or government either.

Mark   April 9th, 2008 7:10 pm ET

Ok, Hillary's face has been on CNN's homepage for the past three days. I'm sick of looking at her. Secondarily, nothing is going to happen regarding Tibet. If people really want to make a statement they should stop buying Chinese products. But we all know that won't happen because everyone loves their iPods and whatnot. The protests mean nothing. Everyone has always know that China has a terrible human rights policy. Maybe we should just go to war with them like we've done with everyone else we don't agree with. I'm sure McCain would love to drop some more bombs on innocent people.

Jimbo   April 9th, 2008 7:02 pm ET

Know how a candidate has taken the lead in the national conscience? About four posts into this thread, and we are talking about Obama and not Macs opinion on the opening ceremonies at the Olympics. And why are we even going to the Olympics in China, for crying out loud. Those sorry bastards are the worst human rights violators in the world. Or maybe not. Hail to the torturer in Chief.

Canada   April 9th, 2008 6:55 pm ET

If the Olympics were to be held in the USA, would we expect all the leaders of the nations which disapprove of USA involvement in Iraq to boycott the opening ceremonies?

Thus, the Golden Rule applies.

Dan   April 9th, 2008 6:52 pm ET

Forget about politics for a moment. What about the athletes? Our athletes. Would they appreciate having the Unites States President present during the Olympic opening ceremonies? (Don't get hung up on the fact that it's W all you haters.) If I were one of the athletes I would really enjoy participating in a sporting event that draws leading government officials from both my own county and the majority of the worlds other countries. I would not enjoy being part of an event that the rest of the world is politicizing.

I don't like what the Chineese government has been, is doing, or will probably continue to do but an athletes attendance is intended to be an endorsement of the host countries policies. The athletes attend to compete with the best from all over the world. The fact that the event is in China has nothing to do with the individual athletes preferences.

Marine Dad   April 9th, 2008 6:51 pm ET

McCain is right...the olympics should not be political its a world athletic event not a time for polictical posturing. China sucks for what they are doing to Tibet...if all of you bleeding hearts want to do something there are other means check out the various websites but leave the olympics out of it ,do you remember the Russian boycott all that happened was we hurt our own athletes...I think the people in africa need a little more help than Tibet does right now!

mike,Iowa   April 9th, 2008 6:44 pm ET

why do we have to ruin the last pure thing we had in this world. The olympics is the only place you can have people from all around the world and actually not be at war with each other. No china should not take away peoples human rights but why use the olympics to protest it. why boycott it? If were going to be so against what china does then why the hell do we even deal with them?

Zoinks   April 9th, 2008 6:43 pm ET

this guy is clueless. heads of state don't even attend opening ceremonies anyway. Hillary likewise has no clue. nor does Pelosi. the whole lot of them should all shut up until they really want to do something about China. but that would mean seriously pissing off their corporate masters.

Israel   April 9th, 2008 6:40 pm ET

President Bush should seperate politics from reality. We borrow so much money from the Chinese on a daily basis. The President needs to show respect for our atheletes!!!!

Patrick   April 9th, 2008 6:35 pm ET

McCain has been a leader on human rights if you look at his record. I believe he would have taken action in the recent crackdown on democracy in Burma. Of course once someone actually tries to do something for human rights, like remove the oppressing regime from power, they are suddenly a war mongerer and the war is "illegal." Democrats have to choose, it's either OK to go to war to protect human rights or its not. Sometimes diplomacy doesn't work believe it or not.

Marty   April 9th, 2008 6:21 pm ET

This is a non-issue. No sitting President has ever attended an Olympic opening ceremony outside the USA. If Pres. Bush decides not to go, it wouldn't be out of the ordinary. It would be extraordinary if he did go. This is not a big deal. Move on.

Lenore   April 9th, 2008 6:16 pm ET

People, we owe China our souls. Don't you get it!!!! You think your are rich? Well you are not because there is NO security left in our Banks
our Investments, You better be more than a little bit rich. Get your money and stash it under the mattress. Bush let the Chinese buy us. They have owned interest in the banks. Mattel could not even talk back. to China.
Bush Cannot speak up to them. Are they buying our foreclosed homes? He can go to the Olympics but he cannot speak up to them,
The money you will be receiving for "stimuli" to the economy, some
2 Billion Dollars, is borrowed. And we will pay interest on it.
The rich can rob this country of all that is good, sell it and move. Our
country is in the biggest crises it has ever been in and we are wanting

Does McCain remember which one is Tibet and which one is China?

True voice   April 9th, 2008 6:12 pm ET

I am a professor in a major US University. I have to say that the majority view on China in this country is biased. About half of our Ph.D. students in our Department are from China and most of them are polite, hard-working and are doing great – good citizens by any standards. Most students I talked to love their country and are proud that the Olympics will be hosted in China. Indeed, China, like any other countries, has some problems, perhaps including the approach in Tibet. But some people in Tibet were robbing the shops and destroying public facilities and the police stopped the violent riot – isn't that the right thing to do for any government? I hope people should get to know the truth before they express their views. Go talk to people from China or people who have visited China, you will find that the truth is much different than what most people perceived.

To Wisconsin for Obama –

You're absolutely right. Obama does think before he speaks. Unfortunately, the only things he can think of to say are just empty words completely void of substance or significance. I guess that's how it goes when you're nothing but a pep rally leader and not an actual qualified presidential candidate.

Hillary or McCain '08

Bill, Streamwood, IL   April 9th, 2008 6:02 pm ET

How wishy-washy for Senator McCain to say such a thing.

Is this the moral leadership we can expect of him should be become president?

Considering what we have heard from John McCain in the last two weeks, he is coming on as "Bush-Lite."

MD   April 9th, 2008 5:50 pm ET

How pathetic is Hillary Clinton! She is thanking British PM, Brwon, for not going to the opening ceremony. The man NEVER had any plans to go to the opening ceremony, even before the Tibet situation arose. She just shoots off her mouth, and tries to make brownie points with Brown (no pun intended). She is so uninformed, it's scary.

As for McCain, stop straddling the fence. Either suggest that Bush should go or not go, or keep your mouth shut. "Keeping his option open means let's see what is the popular thing to do." McCain reminds me of an old tree in the wind.

Wisconsin for Obama   April 9th, 2008 5:50 pm ET

ABG, Obama takes his time and chooses his words. He thinks before he speaks, that is wisdom.

Tim   April 9th, 2008 5:47 pm ET

Lol. I like how the Clintonistas come in here and act like Obama needs to say the exact same thing she did or else he doesnt have "leadership". Clinton only made a comment for political gain, nothing else.

As if skipping the Olympic opening ceremony actually meant anything. You are such sheep.

Barnie   April 9th, 2008 5:44 pm ET

How can you expect Bush and McCain to care about the suffering of people in Tibet and Darfur (The Chinese support the murderous regime in Sudan) if they don't care about the suffering of American service men and women in Iraq? LOL

Huh?   April 9th, 2008 5:42 pm ET

How does an article about McCain and Bush get all the Obamaniacs and Hillaridiots talking about their candidates?

Hillary made a statement a few days ago. Today, boys and girls, we're talking about McCain's statement.

I'm not sure why McCain is giving Bush advice. Bush hasn't listened to anyone for 7 1/2 years. Why would he start, now? His approval rating is off the chart (low) and he only has a few more months to sit in the chair his daddy warmed up for him. He's beyond being a lame duck. I am sure he couldn't care less about what McCain or anyone else for that matter thinks.

KOR   April 9th, 2008 5:26 pm ET

Another chance for Obama to show some leadership-and another failure. He had a chance to show some leadership on resolving the voting controversy with the DNC, but he didn't. If I had a dollar for everytime Obama waited for Hillary to take and stand and then said, "Me, too!" I could afford to buy an election, too.

The "Hope Fund" an Obama political action committee (PAC), has paid more than $694,000 to Democratic "super-delegates." As of this week, of the 81elected officials who are "super-delegates" supporting Obama, 40 percent had received cash contributions. 52 of his super-delegate members are not currently serving elected officials and therefore don't have a current campaign committee into which they can legally deposit checks.

While none of this is technically illegal, it doesn't mean it's ethical either.
The Clinton camp is also playing the payola scam. HILLPAC, Clinton's PAC, and her campaign committee have paid $195,500 to super-delegates. 12 percent of the 109 super-delegates who have said they will support her have received campaign cash.

I honestly FAIL to see how McCain's comments become a Sen. Obama issue? Why is his name even being brought up here? I don't recall it being written anywhere that Sen. Obama has to comment on everything and anything. That MAY be the problem with the other two candidates, they DON'T know when to shut up!!!

I really don't get you Clinton supporters, you come off very bitter and vicious as if Sen. Obama is the one speaking for Sen. McCain here.
Get a grip. Talk about juvenile.

I guess since Sen. Clinton's lead margin is slipping big time in PA, you all have nothing better to do but throw blame at Sen. Obama rather than directing your banter at YOUR OWN CANDIDATE. She is the one who keeps shooting her own foot. Funny that huh?

Geeezzzz.... get your comments in order.

Rose - Baltimore, MD   April 9th, 2008 5:18 pm ET

ABG,

Obama has alredy weighed in on this, check other news web sites like ABC news and Fox news. In a nut shell, what he said is that, we need to be careful on how wee react on this because we cannot not bite the hand that feeds us. After getting into the iraq war we went broke and had to borrow money from China. We are in no position to dictate terms to china. We are indebted to them big time.

ABG do not display your ignorance here, get educated. Read other news medias as well.

Dori in AZ   April 9th, 2008 5:18 pm ET

I agree that the Olympics should not be a political platform in itself. The games are the one area in our lives where the world seems to come together more than not. The best of the world and the worst of the world. And, everywhere in between....

That doesn't change the facts about China. The horrible facts that need to be addressed on the political and economic fronts. China has far too much power over the United States. It hasn't taken it from us. We have given it. Okay, SOLD it.... And, the reality is that they are poisoning us – not just with tainted pet food and dangerous toys for our children!

So, saying Bush should keep his options open is no opinion at all. Sen. McCain, f you don't have one, just admit you don't have one. That you don't know what, in your opinion, would be best. And, quit trying to convince us that you're the best one for the presidency!

Si se puede! Obama 2008!

Z. Ahmed   April 9th, 2008 4:57 pm ET

If boycotting makes sense because of Tibetan independence and justice, then it should go both ways. The way this current administration of the United States has alienated this country and flat out lied to the general public, the majority of the world should boycott us when the Olympics come here. We are a bunch of hypocrites to think we have any say on freedom when we are ruining just that in Iraq by camouflaging our efforts with scare tactics. All in the name of oil, greed and power. We should be ashamed, God forgive us.

Okay Sen. McCain...

But how about YOU start learning the difference between the Sunnis, Shiias and the Kurds. I think old age mind-set is starting to become more and more a problem when you repeatedly kept getting these groups mixed up during your questioning of Gen. Patreas.

I'll can certainly understand when you misspoke the first time, but then you seem to keep getting your foreign comments confused. I'm starting to question if your age is preventing you from making concise and accurate political statements as a Presidential candidate as well as a possible Commander-in-Chief. If AGE is a factor, then that's a serious problem because YOU will eventually have to LEAN heavily on other people because you can't accurately state the facts when it comes to our foreign and economic policies.

Make me kinda say hummmmm, I'm NOT so sure you are capable of holding the Presidential office if these fumbles are any indications.

Should China boycott the US over UNPROVOKED invasion and slaughter of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, and TORTURE BY AMERICANS?

Senator Obama is AGAIN 'showing good' judgment.

The way to deal with China (OF ONE BILLION MORE CITIZENS THAN USA) is THOUGHTFULLY & DELIBERATELY, not by being the world's regular bully!

The Tibetans are the ones who DELIBERATELY created this furor time.

I am with Hillary on this one and expect that the other candidates will be able to follow her example on just this count.

Lenore   April 9th, 2008 4:45 pm ET

Ethel   April 9th, 2008 4:40 pm ET

The the narrowing of Hillary's lead in PA, I've read variously is the $109 million the Clintons EARNED since 2001. Bill's speech making fees, Obama gets fees for speaking, too, even before he decided to run for president. The Clintons' published books' fees also accounted for some of their income. Ann Coulter's books pay her royalties as well. Where ever did you geniuses think the voters are affected by the earnings of the Clintons. Look how Bush and Cheney are earning their millions or is it billions, due to oil prices. Hillary is losing points because the media is on her back, in her pocket and probably up her butt looking for something to hit her with. Meanwhile Obama is kept under wraps for fear he will take a misstep and ruin all the plans his public relations masters have for him. Who cares if the Clintons disagree. Anyone know any married couple that didn't disagree? Why I know of couples where one is for Hillary and one for McCain, Carville and Matalin, the Tysons, she for Hillary he for Obama. Married couples don't have to agree on everything. And if Obama couldn't control Power with her monster remark, how can Hillary control Penn's action. How about a little civility now.

Chuck in Oregon   April 9th, 2008 4:39 pm ET
