Watch Elton John greet the Clintons.

NEW YORK (AP) –Experience is central to Democrat Hillary Clinton's presidential bid, and Wednesday night she tapped one of pop music's most venerable rockers to help fill her campaign coffers with $2.5 million.

Elton John, who has sold records and filled arenas for four decades, played a benefit concert for Clinton at Radio City Music Hall.

"I've always been a Hillary supporter," John, 61, said before launching into his 1970 breakthrough hits, "Your Song" and "Border Song." "There is no one more qualified to lead America."

The English singer, composer and pianist added: "I'm amazed by the misogynistic attitudes of some of the people in this country. And I say to hell with them …. I love you Hillary, I'll be there for you."

The cheapest tickets, $125 and $250, sold out quickly, campaign aides said. The other seats were filled by fans paying as much as $2,300, the limit for an individual's contribution to a federal candidate.

Preceding John on stage were Clinton, her husband, former President Clinton, and their daughter, Chelsea.

Hillary Clinton struck a defiant, underdog note in describing her battle against Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois.

"What I want you to know is I'm still standing, and I believe this country is worth fighting for," the New York senator said, playing off the title of one of John's hits. "So we're taking our campaign to Pennsylvania and all the states that haven't voted." Pennsylvania votes April 22.

The Clintons have hobnobbed with Hollywood and music industry figures for years. In 1998, John performed at a White House State Dinner the couple hosted for then-British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Last October, Clinton celebrated her 60th birthday with a fundraiser at New York's Beacon Theater that featured actor Billy Crystal and musicians Elvis Costello and the Wallflowers. It netted more than $1.5 million for her presidential effort.

There's the difference. Obama gave away 13,000 tickets to see Dave Matthews. Clinton sells tickets to see Elton John. And she still lags 2:1 on campaign money. Anyone see a problem?

Misogynistic? If you call me misogynistic, I call you racist. End of story. Sorry, but that just doesn't cut it. I've noticed that lately all of Clinton's endorsements have been from people who have no idea what they're talking about.

Now I am at ease. A famous gay Brit w/ doll's hair, Disney Land shoes, and Humpty-Dumpty behind–gives us testimony to Hillary's preparedness to lead the nation!!! Yeah!!

Sue from Ga.   April 10th, 2008 9:30 am ET

I for one am truly offended by Elton Johns remarks about some of the people in this country being misogynistic. As a white 50+ year old female who is a supporter of Obama, I find his comment about being a woman hater to be degrading. As for his comment "to hell with all of them", my response is to hell with you, Sir. What right do you have to come into our country and insult a large share of the American population? I would NEVER even think of insulting the citizens of my host country! If perhaps, Sen Clinton was on par with a Margaret Thatcher who was and honest and dignified representative of her country, I would not be so vehemently opposed to Sen. Clinton. As far as the 2.5 million dollars raised, I would like to know how many $125.00 tickets were sold campared to the $2,300. tickets sold..I am sure there were many more of the elitist Clinton crowd there than the every day working many who is payng $3.27 for a gallon of gas.
SHAME ON YOU ELTON JOHN AND SHAME ON YOU HILLARY CLINTON!!!

Jacqueline Samms   April 10th, 2008 9:30 am ET

truth be told   April 10th, 2008 9:31 am ET

unless sir elton john is an american citizen who can cast his vote for an american candidate, i really don't think he should be openly raising funds or campaigning for hillary; or have they changed our constitution and election laws? can somebody help me out?

porchhound   April 10th, 2008 9:31 am ET

Well gosh I sure care what "Sir" Elton John thinks is best for my country…he is, after all, such a brain trust and so well balanced personally! I love the way these people like to throw names at us is such a politely disparaging way. Elton you would still be in the closet and singing in "Mein Kampf" if it were not for "mysoginistic" Americans…that is OUR America by the way.

I despise Elton John from now on. I was a big fan of him. I will never in my ever buy a single CD or listen to a single song of his.

Anyone who supports Billary despises me. She can stoop to any low. She flip flops on every issue. She always resorts to negative and nasty tactics and fear to win.

She can never win fairly! So SAD!!

JB   April 10th, 2008 9:35 am ET

For those women (inlcuding you Elton) who claim that the reason Hillary is losing is based solely on her sex - SHAME ON YOU-

You people are the ones who are hurting equal rights more so than anyone elese. Let me explain.

Your argument is that Hillary is a woman first and that is the reason people choose to vote or not vote for her.

Gender and race should actually be at the bottom of a list of importance. You all are placing it front and center.

But to argue that those who are against Hillary are sexist is BS. For me the reason why I don't vote for her, I cannot trust her. Those Bosnia comments, the committment she made to take her name off of the ballot in MI, and the fact that she committed to respecting and honoring the DNC's decision re: MI and FL. The "only Big States" count comments etc. . . .these are the things I use to evaluate my candidates.

You people are making gender issue number one, and for that, should be ashamed of yourselves! And as I said, you are hurting the equal rights movement for women.

Mike   April 10th, 2008 9:35 am ET

Now, here's some musical "name recognition,"

unlike "Arcade Fire" who performed for Obama.

Sir Elton John, I believe you should write a song for Senator Clinton, her theme song as she accepts the nomination.

Go Hillary!!!!

Good job Sir Elton!!!

Hatred of women isn't what's going on here. Hillary gives the successful/professional woman a bad name with her lying, nitpicking, finger pointing, whining, manipulation, and dishonesty. She makes us look bad. I for one am not going to vote for her because she is a woman. Now Condi may get McCain into office.

Dee   April 10th, 2008 9:38 am ET

What does misogyny have anything to do with it?? Act trustworthy and likeable and you'll have plenty of votes and funding. Clinton is a charity now, and we have to hold benefit concerts in her honor?
Why doesn't she get money from her donors like Obama did, with his average donation of just over $100? All her donations came from big donors and now they're all tapped out.

Nice. I will bet though, since Obama is a follower and not a leader, that he attempts to put on a concert benefit too where all of the players will be black musicians that appeal to the youth. lets wait and see.

Benny and the Jets take Hillary Away   April 10th, 2008 9:42 am ET

Sir John is an icon for greatness in popular music; Hillary Clinton is fast becoming an icon for what is worse in American politics. Elton John has every right to support Hillary, but just like Daniel, he is blind to how HRC as squandered her opportunity to create a greater public good with her service - and it started with her vote on the war. Hillary could learn a few things from Sir John about being magnanemous and demonstrating personal humility and empathy. Unfortunately, it's too late for her this time around… So, Benny and the Jets, please take Hillary away!

Ellis, Brown University   April 10th, 2008 9:42 am ET

What misogyny?! Why can't he use any real argument?

Having a woman president would be great, but can we please rise above this and realize that the challenges we face are too great to decide our president based on race or gender.

Honestly, I think the fact that Hillary thinks that Michigan's voting results "were fair and should be counted" is proof enough that she is too deceitful and insincere to be our next Presidenty. Uhoh, am I a sexist for saying she's insincere?

Calling in old favors…what a surprise. Anybody notice the Dave Matthews Band give free concerts in Indiana to help Obama's "Get out the Vote" campaign. Clinton's need their celebrities to help them pay the bills before they go to collection agencies. Don't any of her supporters ask themselves why doesn't she just dip again into the Hill/Bill fund? I'm sure 2 mil in their Cayman Island accounts is nothing.

Oh well, at least we know she can still get votes in NY. Maybe as some speculated General Petraeus will run for her senate seat and the Clinton's will have more time for concerts.

AmericansForHillary   April 10th, 2008 9:43 am ET

Support for Hillary Clinton remains high, as evidenced by the sold out show last night in Manhattan. The media (including CNN) refuse to challenge Barack on the issues. When will the media admit they were not prepared with a method for challenging a legitimate black candidate without appearing racist? Instead they embrace him in a race to see who can be the 'blackest' news outlet. Ridiculous. Ferraro was right, if he were white, he would not be in this position.

HILLARY 08!

Not A Fan   April 10th, 2008 9:44 am ET

Where is the FEC in all this. Sir Elton is a foreign national who donated his services last evening to raise funds for a candidate in an American election campaign. He's entitled to "like" anyone, but attempts to influence and solicit contributions by a foreign national raises a lot of questions.

Also, Sir Elton has earned hundreds of millions of dollars in this country. He has no right to cast aspersions on all of us nor denigrate Past Presidents regardless of party.

Bottom line is Hillary didn't have my support before this event and last evening's performance coupled with Mark Penn, Chelsea's evasion of questions on Monica and her Mother's role in the cover up plus so much more, didn't change my mind at all. All she's doing is helping to put McCain in the White House.

John   April 10th, 2008 9:53 am ET

How sweet. Adoring parents look on as privileged daughter gets a hug from Sir Elton. Hillary can't scare up an endorsement to save her political life so now she's getting foreign nationals to sing her praise (and her tune)? Do we REALLY need (or care) about a foreigner's opinion of who is best to lead our country? I think Elton should stick to crooning his very aging and tired catalog of hits, and leave American politics to Americans.

Tricia   April 10th, 2008 9:53 am ET

While it's ok for individuals from anywhere in the world to have an opinion on who should be our next President, it should be noted that although Elton John, who is British, does own a home in Atlanta, he owns homes in several countries and his main residence is in England. He will have to pay property taxes but probably not any form of income tax. Representation without taxation. That's an interesting reversal!

I think I'll remain an intelligent anti-war, anti-Washington insider, who wants America to take a different path… and support Obama.

If Hillary is God, as she and her supporters appearently believe; then I guess I'll go to hell for my opposition to her…
But I doubt I'll lose much sleep worrying about that.

Obama 2008!

Tim from Buffalo   April 10th, 2008 9:55 am ET

While there is certianly som pervasive misogynistic attitudes in this country, I haven't seen any support for the idea that this is not why Hillary isn't going to win.

She's losing because her campaign has been awful relative to the competition who's raised more money, ran a more effective ground game, out organized her and just plain made better management decisions.

In the Words of Cheney - SO   April 10th, 2008 9:55 am ET

Glad he could raise some money for her. Maybe she can pay her bills. But who really cares what Elton John thinks of Americans. I guess it's OK for him to say "to hell with them." Things that make you go UUMH?

Mark C   April 10th, 2008 9:55 am ET

I'm not surprised Elton supports Hillary — she polls well among elderly women.

chris   April 10th, 2008 9:55 am ET

Never listening to elton again. The hatred and divisiveness is from the camp he just supported. And when people say hilary is not an underdog, it is not a crack against women. Hilary is a washington insider who has been around along w/ the Bushs for a whole generation. Ahem … we want change - not a candidate who thinks she in some warped way deserves pity. That's called being out of touch - and I guess elton is too. Change!

Paul   April 10th, 2008 9:55 am ET

Not that I've ever been a Hillary supporter but this reminds me of "if you're not with us you're against us"…this I'm sure will bring undecideds to her in droves and anyone else's supporters to her in droves.

Rob   April 10th, 2008 9:56 am ET

Elton John is British and has no business supporting a U.S. Presidential Candidate.

In Chicago   April 10th, 2008 9:56 am ET

Well how-dee-doo! Ain't that great for Billary……………….
good grief

wayne broderick   April 10th, 2008 9:56 am ET

I believe Elton is the one who is misogynistic after all he married a man and not a woman

Joyce in Florida   April 10th, 2008 9:56 am ET

This was so great. I wish I could have been there. This goes to show you how much support Hillary Clinton has. She is definitely the stronger candidate and should be the nominee for President. Keep fighting Senator Clinton. Please don't give up. We are behind you 100%.

GO HILLARY 08!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Superdelegate   April 10th, 2008 9:57 am ET

As it is in America's nature to be critical of all things, rightfully so, does that make Hillary's platform "To hell with America" , or is this a "With me or with the Terrorists" statement?

declan44   April 10th, 2008 9:57 am ET

Go away little Sheba

Martin   April 10th, 2008 9:57 am ET

Good thing he is British.

Elton she has no ethics and that is why American does not want her to be president. Birds of a feather….?

Larry Buchas   April 10th, 2008 9:57 am ET

So let me get this right. You are a misogynis If you are not a Hillary supporter. You're a racist if you do not support Barack. It has nothing to do with Hillary's lies or her negative attacks?

Elton John is loyal to Hillary. There is nothing wrong with that. Most of Barack's supporters (including myself) were also loyal to the Clintons throughout the 90's. We have one of her books as first lady on our book shelf.

So why would we become misogynists now? Speaking for myself, I realize Barack is our best chance to take back the White House. He also represents a welcome change to the partisan bickering for the past 20 years. We are ready to take that chance and back a new kind of politics.

I have no problem with the Clintons, provided they remain Democrats. I would vote for her over McCain because I'm still a Democrat and she represents my values versus McCain. But Barack is the new leader of the Democratic Party and its time to turn that page.

becky   April 10th, 2008 9:57 am ET

So… I find it hard to believe that he can back her after her lies and now the…I want my cake and eat it too thing with Bill and his back door ways of making large amounts of money (for both of them), which we the american people, do not agree with. She must think that we are really stupid people.

Miss H   April 10th, 2008 9:58 am ET

Man, Hillary is a great politician; no doubt about it. She really has impressed me with how smart she plays her card … the Victim and then the Fighter. I don't care what people say, she's good at what she's doing and her supporters are responding to it! Although I don't like it one bit, this is politics and I have to give it up to her …. unbelievable.

Obama '08 Join the Movement

HH   April 10th, 2008 9:58 am ET

To Hell with you Elton. GO BACK TO ENGLAND. If it was not for women and men of America you would be a nobody. Just because Americans dont want a monopoly of families. Or the canditiate in love with the lobbyist is no reason to make foul remarks.

ALSO THE FEC should invesitage I thought people from other countries were not able to raise funds for one in America.

Sam   April 10th, 2008 9:58 am ET

Always love it when those of us who support someone other than Hillary Clinton are accused of misogyny. I guess that means Elton John is a racist?

Can't you gender-baiters (haha) accept that we have no problem voting for a woman, just not THIS woman?

There are these concerns about character and integrity that come into consideration. We've already dealt with the deep flaws of one Clinton – why should we be willing to suffer another?

(One delicious bit of irony: Elton John's a man and he won't sleep with a woman. Hmmm … )

Niel   April 10th, 2008 9:58 am ET

Well, I am not listening to Elton anymore.
Does not FEC do something for a fundraising by a non-citizen? I guess Hillary has "experience" is manipulating this fine-prints.

Did I just mis-speak?

lucyna   April 10th, 2008 9:58 am ET

Who cares he was Clinton's supporters. I was too till I started to follow the election very closely. I can't imagine Clintons in a White House again! Seems that only two families can run the country and nobody else. Is like wearing two pairs of underware for 28 years. Hillary and her clan is like a cancer that is spreading all over the body which eventually will kill.

Lilarose in Oregon   April 10th, 2008 9:58 am ET

About Condi Rice and McCain.

What is so special about Condi Rice if she were to run as VP with McCain?

She hasn't accomplished a thing in her present position.

Wisconsin for Obama   April 10th, 2008 9:58 am ET

good for her, she needs to pay off her bills before she gets out of the race. Now she has 2 millions she needs to go ahead and cut checks for people she owe.

RT   April 10th, 2008 9:58 am ET

Is Elton John even an American citizen?

Dick / NH   April 10th, 2008 9:59 am ET

Can Hillary use funds raised by a foreign national's performance…hope the FEC takes a stand on this.

Susan MO   April 10th, 2008 9:59 am ET

Elton John is a good guy. We are glad he supports Clinton.

Clinton for President!

go away Billary   April 10th, 2008 9:59 am ET

She needs all the money she can get, now she can pay some of the people she owes before they turn her in to the collection agencies as planed.

CHERYL   April 10th, 2008 9:59 am ET

THIS IS WONDERFUL!!!

HILLARY HAS THE SUPPORT OF SOME VERY IMPORTANT PEOPLE!

THEY KNOW THAT SHE IS THE ONLY ONE CAPABLE OF CHANGING THIS COUNTRY!!!!!

THAT WAS QUITE A TIDY SUM OF CASH RAISED!!!

I LOVED THE COMMENTS MADE BY ELTON CONCERNING HILLARY!
I SO AGREE WITH HIM ABOUT THE WOMEN HATERS TO HELL WITH THEM!!!!

WE NEED TO CHOOSE THE PERSON MOST LIKELY TO WIN IN NOVEMBER!!!

HILLARY HAS NO SCANDAL AND NO REVEREND WRIGHT CONTROVERSY!!!!

HILLARY WILL BE OUR NEXT PRESIDENT!!!!!

E Ravenwolf   April 10th, 2008 9:59 am ET

GO ELTON!

Annette   April 10th, 2008 9:59 am ET

"To hell with them?"

How dare Elton John make such statements just because every American does not support his Hillary. He can just go back to England and bow down to HIS Queen, because WE will never bow down to Hillary.
As a proud American, I could care less about what this NON-AMERICAN has to say about our "misogynistic attitudes".
Take your sequins and glitter and go home Elton….

Kim   April 10th, 2008 10:00 am ET

Is Elton John even a U.S. citizen? Can he vote in our elections? For some *strange* reason, I thought he was British…

Bruce Taylor, Berkeley, CA   April 10th, 2008 10:00 am ET

That's great. But I am still voting for Senator Obama. There are misogynists in this world but he is not one of them.

Tom   April 10th, 2008 10:00 am ET

Uh, yeah. Thanks for the input, Elton. Buh-bye now.

Oona   April 10th, 2008 10:00 am ET

I think Elton John should mind his own countries business!

Rosemary Storaska   April 10th, 2008 10:00 am ET

Not wise to underestimate the power of women. Men of all colors have earned equality but women are not yet equal by any measure even if you're not a polygamist. Bias and sexism reigns high in the supposed most educated country in the world? Hillary speaks for all of us!

Becky in In.   April 10th, 2008 10:00 am ET

Elton,

Your the man!!!!!!!!

Phillip from Little Rock   April 10th, 2008 10:00 am ET

Elton wouldn't be too happy if Hillary won and then sent his boyfriend over to Iraq because we were short of troops.

gabe   April 10th, 2008 10:00 am ET

i guess Hillary really DOES care about endorsments after all. I thought she said they weren't important. I guess it only counts if an english rocker endorses you.

Tracy   April 10th, 2008 10:01 am ET

Finally someone has the courage to speak the truth—-namely, that sexism is a driving force in this election! As a woman professional in a male dominated field, I know what my male colleagues say & think behind my back. Hillary is a strong, determined woman who has tremendous knowledge and depth to take on the issues that face this country.

The democratic party should be quite worried about losing the women vote if Obama is the nominee.

DONNA F   April 10th, 2008 10:01 am ET

Thank God for Elton John. Go Hillary

@americans   April 10th, 2008 10:02 am ET

well said Elton!

NOW TAKE THIS, in your own words:…TO HELL WITH BILLARY!!!!

stan   April 10th, 2008 10:02 am ET

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH ELTON .

OF THE 3 CANDIDATES, HILLARY IS BEST PREPARED TO LEAD THIS COUNTRY.

ROCK ON ELTON & ROCK ON HILLARY!!!

colo   April 10th, 2008 11:03 am ET

Good Job Elton. We love you.

Most Americans DO know what's good for them, and will vote for HILLARY.

robfire   April 10th, 2008 11:08 am ET

Oh, if America ever needed to turn off the media and recall our roots of strength: freedom, valor, sacrifices for world freedom in WWI and WWII and everything else that makes us great - this is the time. You know we arent hearing about real issues in these debates. And Elton is nobody.

Key West Sun   April 10th, 2008 11:08 am ET

Dang it is amazing how hateful Obama people are, Yea I can see this great change of his is for the better. His church is built on hate and now looks like his support is built on hate,,,,wow,,,,now if he win's will we build a counrty of hate.

Rick   April 10th, 2008 11:09 am ET

Elton has no idea what it takes to run the USA. His own country has a disaster for a health care system. Which is exactly what Hillary is trying to push down our throats. An no spoon full of sugar will help make that medicine go down.

dee   April 10th, 2008 11:09 am ET

GO HILLARY GO !!!!!!!

I LOVE ELTON JOHN. HE SPEAKS HIS MIND AND THE TRUTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CAN'T HANDLE IT GET OUT OF THE RACE!

MARKMYWORD   April 10th, 2008 11:09 am ET

Good comment HH!! MY SENTIMENTS EXACTLY!!

LifeLongDemocrat   April 10th, 2008 11:10 am ET

I would have liked to have been there. You Obama supporters, can't you ever say anything that is not hate-filled? I am trying to have a more positive view of Obama in case he is the nominee but you're not helping me do that. Let's have an honest difference re the issues and stop the name-calling. It doesn't do the party any good and makes me wonder if you are just Republicans stirring the pot against a united Democratic party.

Isaac, Wisconsin   April 10th, 2008 11:10 am ET

Thank u JElton for standing up for Hillary. I agreed with you that she is the one for America….

cc, Chicago   April 10th, 2008 11:10 am ET

You all need to chill. So what if Elton John is not a U.S. citizen? He still has a right to his opinion and his opinion should be respected as just that, his opinion (even if he did present his opinion in a somewhat insulting manner, but cut him some slack - his candidate is losing). And there is nothing wrong with Sen. Clinton holding a fundraiser. Last time I checked, she was still competing. (And no, I'm not a Sen. Clinton supporter - I just don't see anything wrong with her throwing a fundraiser)

Susan   April 10th, 2008 11:10 am ET

Why is it offensive to say there is some misogyny… like there is some racism… still in the US today? Let's acknowledge it as the first step in getting rid of it! I don't believe Elton John personally criticized any one of you by name so this should not be a "personally" offensive remark.

Hillary to the White House   April 10th, 2008 11:10 am ET

Michelle Obama cannot make ends meet on $370,000 a year.

NoBama!

Hillary will be best for the world and the USA!

Jim Mackle - Phila. Pa.   April 10th, 2008 11:10 am ET

The ravings of a badly aging Queen.

PennsylvaniaISnoFOOL   April 10th, 2008 11:11 am ET

YOU GO ELTON!!!

Hillary/Edwards 2008!!

Say NO to the Obama CULT

Debra Austin, Texas   April 10th, 2008 11:11 am ET

AmericansForHillary:

You say that as the wise leader Geraldine Ferraro said, "If Obama weren't black, he wouldn't have gotten this far." Who knows, but we sure know that if Hillary wasn't married to Bill, then she would have certainly had NO credentials to be here either. Hillary, the REAL joke.

Sara   April 10th, 2008 11:11 am ET

Obama is a hyppocrit, and his cult-like supporters are hateful, spiteful fanatics.

being SO eager to jump on the name-calling-hate-mongering bus to slam Hillary…just SHOWS how uneducated and childish you really are.

Why dont' you stick with facts? Oh..that's right. The facts make Obama look like the cowardly SPINELIESS hyppocrit is he, when it comes to his votes.

Bill Dance   April 10th, 2008 11:11 am ET

Hillary and Elton have something in common…. They both SUCK! But not as much as Bill would like. That's why he liked Monica.

Oklahoma Ryan   April 10th, 2008 11:12 am ET

I think it is great when other countries citizens who do not have the same political system tell us who to vote for and support. It is kind of like a farmer telling a MD how to diagnose an illness.

NO OBAMA MAMA!   April 10th, 2008 11:17 am ET

Do you really think there's gonna be a Black President?…. Not a Chance!

Hillary 08

Mauri   April 10th, 2008 11:24 am ET

How wonderful to have someone (important) who is backing Hillary besides "old women!" Sounds like everybody woke up on the wrong side of the bed today. Those of you who delight in saying that Hillary lies — better look to your left. Obama tells one whopper right after the other. Careful there also, because perhaps you forgot that Elton John's native country is our mother-land, without whom we wouldn't be here!

Tim from Orlando   April 10th, 2008 11:24 am ET

Kinda gets around the law about foreign nationals influencing American elections. But getting around the law is nothing new to these people.

Obama '08!

Sharlene, SC   April 10th, 2008 11:24 am ET

THANK YOU ELTON. YOU HELPED MAKE UP MY MIND.

OBAMA 08 ALL THE WAY!
