Sen. Barack Obama said Thursday a repeal of 'don't ask, don't tell' is possible if he's elected.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Sen. Barack Obama says if elected president he won't require that his appointees to the Joint Chiefs of Staff support allowing gays to serve openly in the military.

The Democratic presidential front-runner told The Advocate, a gay magazine, that he wants to repeal the "don't ask, don't tell" policy on gays, which was instituted during the Clinton administration.

When you rewrite or qoute someone, without mentioning the speaker or author it can be construed as plagirism, or it may seem like you have an itchy rash called Obamanism! Freedom of Speech.

Yeah! And give them joint quarters such that they will not be bothered by all those ugly non-gays.

Again, this demonstrates Obama can say anything to get votes. not mine though

Go Obama, go! And dont come back!

There was a time in our nation's history when black people and women of any color were considered unfit to defend their nation…..how sad that now the 10% of Americans who are homosexual can only serve their country in secrecy and fear of being discovered. And there could be tragic consequences to the large number of Arabic speaking gay soldiers being discharged…what threats and hidden messages might they have been able to detect. Amazing how hate and bigotry is always seeking a new target, usually wrapped in the flag and clutching a Bible obviously rarely read.

GET the FACTS straight sweetie. It pays to READ the whole report before commenting.

Thanks!

chris   April 10th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

The recent news reports showed that women are more likely to get raped than to die in Iraq or Afghanistan. then Cant the argument be made that women shouldn't serve in the military?!?!?!? First of all, we have our military being deployed on 4 to 5 tours of duty, never seeing their children grow up, divorce rates high, PTSD and suicide rates high, no VA benefits. let the gays serve or we need a draft. It is not a matter of gay or straight, this is a matter of resources that we don't have.

Sid   April 10th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

I support Obama, think "don't ask don't tell" is quite silly, but think this is NOT an issue that one running for President needs to be addressing, especially in a fiscal and political climate that beckons for changes in other areas.

I will, however, back his statement: that he won't "require" his Joint Chiefs to support it…thus if they do, they do; if they don't, they don't.

Notwithstanding all the silliness from the past few weeks, those who choose Clinton must reckon with the fact that she and her other have been involved in some pretty shady, below-the-radar conduct.

And forget the Obama-preacher fiasco…the truth in this country hurts; unfortunately a religious person had to point some of it out (irreverently I must add); personally I think we need a secular humanist to really bring long-lasting change to this country…too bad Obama is a Christian and not a secularist.

Keep the Ban!   April 10th, 2008 4:03 pm ET

As a gay man, I'm ALL FOR the military ban on openly gay people in the military. I'd much rather have narrow-minded straight people being put in harms way….while us gay people stay at home and reap the benefits!
Hey….pro-ban people….you're LUCKY the gay people are "asking" to serve! Who better to serve in the military than a gay person that's had a LIFETIME of experience with intimidation, anger, violence, and hatred directed at them? That's a soldier that's BATTLE HARDENED!!

Patsy   April 10th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

Hey, all you hotheads - go back and read James' comment. No one seems to have read the article closely enough to present an intelligent argument.

Sam- Chicago   April 10th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

Its politics, you say whatever it takes to get votes, even if you do not mean it. What sounds good to someone, may sound horrible to another. At the end of the day, its how many voters you have pleased and convinced that counts.

Who is the LIAR??   April 10th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

“Barack Obama publicly promised the American people that he would accept public financing if he is the nominee of his party,” said Tucker Bounds, a spokesman for Mr. McCain. “Launching his campaign by going back on a promise to voters would be dishonest, and exposes his politics of hope as empty rhetoric out of a typical politician.”

Rich   April 10th, 2008 3:50 pm ET

It's amusing to hear Hillary Clinton supporters say Obama will say anything to win. Tell me, who does Clinton think should determine the primary now days?

I see no issue with him saying something Clinton has been saying. He listens to all people, even his opponents, and will adopt their points of view if he sees they are wise. In many debates he has made a point of saying when he thinks Hillary's policies are right on. He also has disagreed with her on issues such as getting into the Iraq war or whether you need to mandate health care to everyone. And she has adopted some of his stances, too, such as his earlier focus on Afghanistan over Iraq.

James   April 10th, 2008 3:45 pm ET

He wants to repeal it …..and………will NOT care if his would be appointees support openly gay serving. Nothing about changing the law to allow openly gay to serve.

The millitary code needs to be updated and brought to today's social standards.

"Don't Ask, Don't Tell" was another on the fence Clinton idea which has in effect trampled on individual rights of servicemen and women.

It is a shame that in a country that boasts of championing personal freedom, we allow bigots in the Congress to deny a sizeable portion of our society the right to serve their country.

Andrew   April 10th, 2008 3:39 pm ET

As a gay Democrat, I see this as Obama's last ditch effort at pandering to the gay community and I will not be duped. Hillary stated her support for the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell in Living History and one of the first Democratic debates. Hillary has always cared about the gay community and will do more to advance equal rights for gays as President than Obama ever would. This is just one of the many reasons I cast my vote for her.

I don't know why so many people are saying that Obama is copying Hillary by wanting to repeal DADT. As I recall they both took this stand at the beginnings of their campaigns. This is nothing new.

Bean   April 10th, 2008 3:28 pm ET

To those who say he's copying Hillary…

Both Obama and Hillary have been speaking out against the don't ask don't tell policy for months… Watch the old debates! I believe when asked for a show of hands, every democrat was against the policy… (this was back when there were still several democratic candidates) nobody's copying anybody, they're standing up for what they know is right!

Chuck   April 10th, 2008 3:27 pm ET

B.O is starting to smell like BO. One day he says one thing and the next another. Take a good look at the man. Does he stand for anything on his own two feet or does someone have to pull his string?
He will not make a strong president and will find himself chasing his tail every time the GOP says anything to misdirect him. He does not have the insight to overcome things when they get dirty, and they will!
The news castors have beat his drums so long for him, he hears them in his sleep. He needs to come back in EIGHT years after he learns to be a SENATOR.

Sparky   April 10th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Obama has run the majority of his campaign by mirroring his thoughts to Hillary's. I have seen it on each of the matchups they had on TV and in the news. This is just another one. Hillary stated days before Obama about the President boycotting the Olympics Opening and then there is Obama mirroring her again.

This is how he is doing it. Taking the ideas of a woman as his own so there is no difference between them. He knows she can not say foul play as the news would crucify her again. Just got to love it! America at its best…….Go HILLARY - only 4 more years…..

Bridgette   April 10th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

If they have some of the same ideas it does not mean he is following Hilary. Someone asked a question and he answered it. It was a stupid policy in the first place. Who's asking her about that extra $800,000.00 that her husband got to negoitiate the Columbian trade deal. He was right in that same deal with Mark Penn. They just made him the fall guy. That is why he is not really fired. You have to be realistic if you think that this lady can profit from something that she is suppose to be against. I don't understand why this has not been brought up more often. These trade deals are destroying America and she is profiting from them. Open your eyes people.

Obama has my vote! Clinton can't be honest from one moment to the next and she and her husband are a disgrace to this country. He sells himself after his presidency to the highest bidder while she sits aware of it as our NY Senator. Both spending our taxpayer money acting as if they are entitled to destroying lives of American's by the secrets they hold from the White House days… All the while, profiting to the tune of 109million dollars. Now, she wants us to elect her as president and give her family another 4 more years to harm us and steal from us again! NO THANK YOU!!!! 8 YEARS in Washington WAS TOO LONG! And then 2 terms as the NY Senator involved with and taking part in the decision on the hill and at home with her husband's dealing…. Don't fool yourself, she knew exactly what Bill was doing and signed right up for it! She does nothing without his knowledge and visa versa!

Melissa, MI   April 10th, 2008 2:59 pm ET

I hate to break it to all you Clinton supports who say that that Obama is copying "Clinton's idea" to change this policy

for this policy decision there are really two choices:
keep the status quo
or
change
That's it.

NCLaw441   April 10th, 2008 2:55 pm ET

Why should anybody even KNOW what another military person's sexual preference is? It is not relevant and ought not be mentioned. That's why "Don't ask " was created. The problem arises when a gay soldier just cannot hold back from expressing his sexuality to a bunch of guys who DO NOT WANT TO KNOW. The military is not the place for free expression. Kill people and break things is what they are there for. If you need to have a soapbox, the military is not for you.

HYPOCRACY 08   April 10th, 2008 2:54 pm ET

The problem isn't that someone is gay or not… the problem is in the logistical and social issues that arise from having openly gay people serving in a combat zone… Don't ask don't tell gave an out in which a person could serve…

Doonsey   April 10th, 2008 2:52 pm ET

Bayou Joe: What a nasty, stinking racist thing to say. I'm sure you are one to condemn Rev. Wright and you couldn't accept a gay person, a black person, on and on…. What makes you more worthy than the next guy?

Hillary's under sniper fire again, she better duck!

JimS.   April 10th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

All of you blaming Clinton for instituting "Don't Ask/Don't Tell", your memories are a bit weak….This was the compromise he agreed to because he couldn't get the ban completly overturned due to the homophobic outcry and resistance at the Pentagon.

If the armed services were following DA/DT according to the way it was intended, it wouldn't be a problem today. But the military is still discriminating, against the intent of Don't Ask/Don't Tell.

And while we're on the subject of anti-gay discrimination–Clinton's hand was forced into signing the Defense of Marriage act by a right-wing Republican congress. They wanted to paint him into a corner and have him veto the bill so it would cost him political capital. If you recall correctly, he was not an enthusiastic supporter of the bill.

Some of you have short memories. But on the other hand, some of you were probably in 8th grade at the time.

The Uniform Code of Military Justice, which includes laws against sodomy and infidelity, is drastically different from the federal laws that govern this land. In basic training, we were told that sodomy is anything but the missionary possession and if caught in such an act, you can go to jail.

Many people make the argument that the military should be allowed to govern itself and to some extent that is true. But these social issues laws have nothing to with the military's mission of defending this country. It is a system that is paid for by taxpayer's money and should represent the values and laws that this country puts forth.

WHERE'S THE STORY ABOUT HOW MCCAIN STACKS AGAINST OBAMA AND HILLARY IN THE LATEST POLL?

TESA P   April 10th, 2008 2:37 pm ET

I am confused, mainly because it should not matter if a person is gay or straight, our armed forces are VOLUNTARY, meaning you only join if you want to…. So why discriminate. It makes no sense…….. Only straight people get to join the army :( WHY?

dave   April 10th, 2008 2:35 pm ET

no need for this to be done by congress. all the legal authority a president has on this rests in equal protection requirements of the various civil rights acts….. such as the order by FDR or Truman, can't recall which one, that ended segregation in the military, until then there were black units and white units, but the prez executive order ended this practice…. so the prez has the legal authority to do so already, no need for any new law by the congress

April 9, 2008 — A new InsiderAdvantage/Majority Opinion poll shows Sen. Hillary Clinton regaining some ground she’d previously lost to Sen. Barack Obama in the Pennsylvania Democratic presidential primary race.

Here are the results of our new poll:

Clinton 48%

Obama 38%

Undecided 13%*

CNN's other article is so bogus!!!! I am sure they will not post this!!!

Senator Obama has been playing 'follow the leader' very well. Clinton has been talking about this since the second debate I think. He is just saying whatever to get votes. PA voters know when they are being bought - and they also know that CNN/MSNBC are really bias for Obama…so take it all with a grain of salt. It is politics.

So issues - for all the Camp Obama folks:

1. You support nuclear weapons
2. You support a fractured health care proposal that is not universal
3. You support very bad judgment when it came to Rezko
4. You support very bad judgment when it came to WRight
5. You support no help for the people in trouble with their mortgages
6. You support disenfranchising millions of democratic voters
7. You support a 10 year olds perspective used and cited as foreign policy experience
8. You support NAFTA the way it has been explained to the Canadians by the Obama Camp
9. You support brining home the troops within two years, 24 months of next January (that is Obama's war advisors new numbers)
10. You support Obama going back on his campaign promise to use campaign financing for the General Election
11. You support your candidate…..

And I will support mine who has a far different position that yours on all of the issues I just listed. Look it up for yourself….only truth!!!!!

A vote for Obama is a vote for McCain, a vote for Clinton is a vote for the democratic White House!

Sheryl   April 10th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

The media has slammed the Clintons every chance they get. Lets see if their love affair with Obama lasts after he has been in office for a few months. I can't wait to tell the Obama supporters "I told you so".

Jedi Academy   April 10th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

Terry, actual change happens when he is in the whitehouse. Right now he is campaigning. This involves speeches and plans. Don't put the cart before the horse. The current strategy of don't ask, don't tell is counterproductive. I think that says it all. And Frank, he is a part of Congress, he's a United States Senator.

Jim   April 10th, 2008 2:30 pm ET

I've said it once and I will continue to say it, "a President is only as good as the Congress around him". The structure of our legislative branch of government prevents any one person from having an uncontested value to the final decision. Oh, by the way, to all the BUSH bashers, who's in control of the Senate and House?????

Debbie,NJ   April 10th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

There you people go again. The article is about gay soldiers and for some reason you find a reason to bash Obama when a lot of other people, include crazy Hillary agrees. What's wrong are you gay? Trying to divert the topic. You can come out we don't care. Gay soldiers deserve the same honor as anybody else. News flash,
Hillary didn't come up with this nor the the economic plan. She stole them from other Senators. Like she tried to steal credit for these things..
the Irish peace process.
intervene in Rwanda.
She played a role in the '90s economic recovery.
She negotiated for the release of refugees in Macedonia (who were released the day before she got there).
She's worst than a copycat she is a thief and a lier.

There was no way in flaming he|| that the military would have transitioned directly to allow soldiers to serve openly gay back then. However, now we are ready to take it a step further and treat all of our soldiers as equals, regardless of their orientation. I've know several people who served in the Army and are gay. Why do you think she came up with a 60 day withdrawal all of a sudden after a debate with Obama and found out he actually had a detailed plan long before she did! Stop listening to your candidate's lies! Wow she's got you fooled.

Maurice, NC   April 10th, 2008 2:21 pm ET

Bill Clinton was a great president! I believe that so many people are drawn to Hillary because of what he did. Is it really a good idea for her to say that she doesn’t agree with his views on policies that he implemented? My wife and I don’t always agree on everything, but these are some pretty big issues. These aren’t petty disagreements. I support Obama, but will support Hillary if she get’s the nomination. I think that we democrats need to wake up from this dream that we will have 8 more years of Bill. What made Bill great are the same things that make Obama great. And if you don’t think that the Clinton’s will fully endorse Obama, should he get the nomination, you need to just wake up!

Scott; for your information Congress didn't institute the policy of don't ask and don't tell, it was former Pres. Bill Clinton. This is not to say Hillary had anything to do with it, if that is who you support, but I'm with Obama on this one. Vote Obama.

Pam   April 10th, 2008 2:15 pm ET

Well, there you go. He doesn't want equal civil rights for everyone. He's a hypocrital racist and just wants to be elected. He will change nothing about this country except continued racial tension and bigotry against gays.

Hillary is the only one with the balls to say that gays should have equal rights. And they should since they're over there dying like so many others.

precious   April 10th, 2008 2:13 pm ET

I have always wondered why Obama always wait or takes time to respond to important issues. His speaches are always the same (nothing new). So I have asked myself, if he becomes "President of the USA", how will he handle any crisis that occurs? will he scapegoat the issues? will he wait until someone else speaks up and then agree/disagree? will the Vice Present he appoints be the one in charge? will he be able to make quick decisions on his own? will the senators, delegates and superdelegates stand by him if he misspoke while in charge? There are still so many questions, and I find myself going back to the main question which is "Who is Barack Obama"? I can only guess that "time will tell".

Aren't we tired of this debate yet? Please — what difference does it make what a person's sexual preference is, anywhere or anytime. Surely this great country can get past this issue. I'm a 65-year-old white heterosexual woman who's lived long enough to realize that there are far more important issues that need to be addressed.

Dani: Oh my God! Here he goes again, following Hillary's lead.

Guess what, "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" was a policy instuted during the CLINTON ADMINISTRATION. Notice how the Clintons screwed up lots of things and now they want you to think they will change things and redeem themselves. Yet, their supporters will believe that these are FRESH ideas that the only the Clintons can claim credit for.

***AMERICAN***   April 10th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

How many of you have been in battle or were in the military? I'll even accept the Coast Guard which part of the Dept of Transportation. Orientation does not make a good sailor, soldier, airman or marine. It is heart and desire. THis is an old out of date policy.

Whose idea was it again?

Brainless   April 10th, 2008 1:53 pm ET

To all Obama supporters.

If Obama is so special as you describe, why doesn't he change now? Is it really matter being a president when the person is very special and can unite this country? Or he cannot do anything without being a president?
Then, we just need a president and it dioesn't have to be Obama.

No difference at all.

Rose   April 10th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Obviously we are not dealing with Christian candidates at all her. There is NO WAY a Christian would support gays in the military or anywhere else.

richard   April 10th, 2008 1:50 pm ET

I think this makes sense to get rid of this policy it is stupid. It is like shooting yourself in the foot and wondering why it hurts. Some things have to handled on an individual basis with common sense.

Lee WV   April 10th, 2008 1:50 pm ET

People will have to answer to a higher authority one day as to why they did the things they did.If they want to support our country then let them.Obama will be fair to all.

James, SC   April 10th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

Scott,

As Commander in Chief the President can do this. That is why Pres. Clinton was able to mandate Don't ask, Don't tell, and Don't pursue.

Christian, Tampa FL   April 10th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

He doesn't have to require that they personally support allowing gays in the military. He just has to support it and it will be done.

The military is the only professional organization in America, as far as I know, that discriminates based on sexuality. This is dumb and it should end. Our soldiers are professional and mature enough to handle people who are openly homosexual.

lina60626   April 10th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

I keep hearing how much more educated the Obama supporters are. Can you people not see through this guy? I heard recently on TV that Obama supporters are being laid a guilt trip on them if they do not vote for Obama. That must be the reason for so many young people are registering to vote.

Please - think for yourselves - vote your conscience.

Obama has a lot of questions to answer and keeps avoiding answering them.

You all think that because Hillary may have already said it he can't say almost the same thing. So I guess your logic is if Hillary said it first then he has to say the opposite despite what he believes to be his thoughts on the subject, thats what would make you all happy…. YOU ALL ARE CRAZY FOR BELIEVING THAT>>>>

Fed up in Texas   April 10th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

What a shame? Gay people have worked hard to get one step forward and this guy is about to throw them 100 feet back. Gay people love this country just like anyone else. Why is it so wrong to let them serve in the military. Obama is a disgrace.

debra   April 10th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

Whats he doing, reading a manual on what Clinton did in office? Why vote for him when you can have the real deal with Hillary.

Chuck in Oregon   April 10th, 2008 1:42 pm ET

We may not agree with peoples life styles, or selection of partners, but that does not make them any less productive or capable of serving this country. These are their choices to make, and it is between them and their creator or how ever you want to phrase that last part. Way to go Obama and good luck on that bill.

hillary said this so long ago. how come that didn't get a headline on the ticker cnn???

marv. g   April 10th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

far greater issues to address at this time. i understand the gay media maybe putting pressure on obama to be more accessible, but lets get real, who gives a hoot about that right now with continuing outsourcing of jobs, skyrocketing gas prices, recession bound economy and the dreadful situation in the middle east, lets focus on the pertinent.

Denis   April 10th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

Why doen't OBAMA create a new question "DO ASK AND DO TELL".
I will then give HIM my answer: NO YOU CAN AND WILL NEVER EVER GET MY VOTE.

By the way that question should never be asked or exist. I am not gay but my son is and he should be allowed if he wishes to serve his country in any capacity even as president. Obama are you anti-gay too because reading some of the comments made on blogs where Elton John is supporting Hillary, looks like lots of your supporters have issues.

Nisha   April 10th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

Brad- Are you in the military? Have you ever been? I doubt it. If you had bothered to read the whold story you would know that that was exactly what he was saying. Focus on the mission and not a persons sex life. Kicking people out because they are gay is stupid.

Pat Huntington NY- Hillary's husband put this stupid law in place. You know the man who has the most influence on her decisions? The one that also supports trading w/ Columbia. How about your candidate show some real leadership and divorce her husband?

Doug in Orlando, Fla   April 10th, 2008 1:38 pm ET

HMMMM, 3 positive stories about Obama….1 story about chelsea. looks like cnn is at it again. BTW the polls story is wrong too. On 4/7/08 surveyusa, the most dependable poll, had clinton with an 18 point lead and Insidepoll had her 10 points ahead yesterday. get it right cnn. Funny obama has outspend her 5/1 and can't put her away. Can't wait til the debate the 22nd so we can hear Obama constantly say "Hillary is right"…"I have to agree with Hillary on this 1″ or my fav….."This is something i agree with Hillary on". Never an idea from this guy. Just Change, change, change. Maybe he should have "changed" churches.

Fred up north needs to learn how to spell American or maybe he is just now starting to feel patriotic. Look at what kind of people are following Obama. Hillary will win

Ed from PA   April 10th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

Thank you Obama! Do it!

Equality for all!

James   April 10th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

The military doesn't decide this stuff. This was a policy enacted by the Clinton Administration. Almost everything every candidate proposed has to go through Congress. Thats the nature of the system. Its not an empty promise any more than health care is an empty promise.

I served for 3 years in the Army as a non-commissioned officer. I have seen gay soldiers who were incredibly good at being soldiers, and I have seen straight men try to get out of the Army by claiming they are gay. This is something that needs to be changed in the Military's policy to allow equal rights for everyone in the military.

Bayou Joe   April 10th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

I don't know about you but I am getting sick and tired of seeing this ugly mug on my computer. I can't wait till the Democrats make up their mind and select this Black Radical as their candidate so that we can start to show the American people the real Obama.

Matt   April 10th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

Who honestly cares if someone is gay if they are willing to put their life on the line for our country? That does not make them any less able to fight or any less patriotic.

Mia   April 10th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

The military have been kicking out Arabic speaking soldiers because they are gay - Does that make sense to you?

Gays have only to answer to God not us, so I really wish we would stop judging.

The bottom line is the military has a code of conduct and as long as they follow that it should not matter who they go home to at night or who they sleep with!

x-steelworker   April 10th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

I served 25 years. in combat, when those scuds go off- you do not ask the guy in the fox hole if he or she is gay. you say something like-
god forgive and see me through this.

Your going to make a great Commander and chief-

At least you have a position that never changes like your opponent-
NAFTA, China, snipers, foreign investments, lobbyists, expansion of NAFTA-

I'm glad the press is reporting on the real Clintons!!

Sue   April 10th, 2008 1:03 pm ET

He is absolutely correct on this issue. If you serve your country proudly and well, what difference does it make if you are or aren't gay. Why should gay men and women have to hide the fact that they are. The military should be proud of everyone who does service for their country, and in no way should discriminate.

Herb (Landenberg, PA)   April 10th, 2008 1:03 pm ET

As a retired U.S. Army officer who was on active duty in the mid 1990s when "Slick Willie" instituted his notorious "don't ask, don't tell" military policy, I absolutely applaud Senator Obama for his stance. Bill Clinton instituted this policy against the best knowledge, judgment and desires within the military at the time, including former Joint Chiefs of Staff General Colin Powell.

Although I do not oppose gays in the military per se, I think it would be best for each branch of service to decide its own policies for admittance, rather than having such policies mandated from the Oval Office.

Go Obama 08! We are here for you in The Keystone State!

jobblyman   April 10th, 2008 1:03 pm ET

This makes sense to me. Will somebody in the mainstream media please ask him about Larry Sinclair?? I don't expect this to get posted, as CNN always blocks my question about him…

Lee From Treasure Island Florida   April 10th, 2008 1:02 pm ET

This was a question asked on one of the early Republican Debates…It was asked by Anderson Cooper, but then out of the audience stood a 5 star General who submitted the question…WHO WAS GAY. He believed as Obama believes. Why hide it.

Cole   April 10th, 2008 1:02 pm ET

Great to hear Obama express his views. On the contrary though the process will not be that simple. Find this to be a great promise, at least thats a start.

Frank, Missouri   April 10th, 2008 1:01 pm ET

Brad   April 10th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

Why change a good piece of legislature. Whats wrong with not being asked about your sex life while you are in the Military. It's a fair policy. They shouldn't ask if you are straight either. this is none of there business. What a way to run the Military . We can all see your 1st day on the job. Screw the war lets worry about whether we have gay's in the military or lesbian's . Worry about the war stupid and the economy and to hell with there sex life. Think of the gangs & drug dealers living in your own back yard who support you with there illegal funds and the welfare parents who sell there food stamps to also fund your campaign, clean up your own neighborhood first .

Pat Huntington NY   April 10th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

Show some leadership here Obama and nix the gay ban altogether. Many great countries have done so, and they are still here. The only reason to keep the gay ban, is to promote homophobia.

Al, NY NY   April 10th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

So if this happens the thousands of qualified and vital soldiers (ie Arab interpretors) who were tossed out will be able to get back in after being inexcusably removed leaving a staffing vacuum? Who'da thought that would be good??

Kelley   April 10th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

Dani
for your information Ayer's is a distinguished professor of education at the U of Chicago, He also sits on the Woods Fund Foundation. Obama was also on this Board from 1999-2002. Investigate what the Woods Fund Foundation does and then cry that it is not a worthwhile cause. P.S. Ayers was never convicted. You need to be able to rally for your candidate without trying to put the other candidate down. Your candidate should be able to win the election based on their merits and not by putting others down. Otherwise your argument is null and void.

lol Scott. Don't be silly. Everything has to go through Congress…….

My belief not yours   April 10th, 2008 12:58 pm ET

The don't ask don't tell policy is there to protect the gay man or gay women. If we don't have this in the military than alot more soldiers, airman, and marines will suffer. You will have more incidents like the one a few years back with the beating and killing of the gay soldier. Leave it as is.

Jay   April 10th, 2008 12:58 pm ET

Brian, Ohio   April 10th, 2008 12:57 pm ET

This snippet of the story really distorts his position. I'm sure many won't read the full story where he said:

He said his priority for the Joint Chiefs will be that they make decisions to strengthen the military and keep the country safe, not their position on the policy.

"I would never make this a litmus test for the Joint Chiefs of Staff," Obama said in an interview with The Advocate.

"But I think there's increasing recognition within the Armed Forces that this is a counterproductive strategy," he said.

"We're spending large sums of money to kick highly qualified gays or lesbians out of our military, some of whom possess specialties like Arab-language capabilities that we desperately need. That doesn't make us more safe."

Mike   April 10th, 2008 12:55 pm ET

Doug, Nobama knows nothing about the Economy or National Security!

Go Hillary!!!!

Veterans for Obama   April 10th, 2008 12:55 pm ET

When I was in the Army there were plenty of men who displayed signs of being gay. No one bothered them, they were our cooks, medics, admin support, and occasionally an 11B (infantry)…Its a shame that they could never truly come out. I can't imagine having to live a lie just so I don't lose my job.

The old saying "No atheists in the foxholes" should be changed to "No Homophobes in the foxhole".

The young generation is sooo much more open to matters of race and sexuality, its all the old politicians who keep these things alive.

"Don't Ask Don't Tell" was a foolish waste of Bubba Clinton's political capital to pander to the poofters and ignore the sound advice of military advisors, so it should be reversed. Other than that, one of the few things he accomplished was the Family and Medical Leave Act.
