A McCain-Rice ticket could carry New York, a new poll says.

(CNN) – Condoleezza Rice has said she has no desire to be John McCain's running mate, but a new poll out Wednesday suggests that duo could beat the Democratic ticket in the bluest of states.

In a new poll conducted by Marist College and WNBC, a McCain-Rice ticket would beat a ticket that includes both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama in New York — a state that reliably votes for the Democratic candidate. (In 2004, John Kerry beat President Bush there by nearly 20 points. In 2000, the margin between Al Gore and Bush was an even higher 25 points.)

But should McCain and Rice team up, the poll suggests the two Republicans would carry New York, defeating a Clinton-Obama ticket by 3 points (49-46 percent) and an Obama-Clinton ticket by 5 points (49-44 percent.)

The poll comes days after a leading Republican strategist suggested Rice, contrary to her own public statements, is engaging in a behind-the-scenes campaign to land a spot on McCain's ticket. Former Bush administration official Dan Senor made the suggestion on ABC Sunday, noting Rice's recent appearance at the weekly meeting of Americans for Tax Reform — a leading organization of Republican insiders — as evidence she is attempting to cozy up to the conservative elite.

That suggestion immediately had Beltway insiders speculating on the potential advantages Rice would deliver, especially in light of the fact the Democratic presidential ticket will either feature a woman or an African-American for the first time in American history.

Rice herself attempted to put the speculation to rest Tuesday, saying, "I very much look forward to watching this campaign and voting as a voter — I have a lot of work to do and then I'll happily go back to Stanford."

But with polls like this, it's likely some Republicans hope she reconsiders.

Condi, please run. We need your foreign experience as well as your experience as National Security Advisor.

New Yorker   April 9th, 2008 9:09 pm ET

McCain OR Rice could beat those pandering Democrats- Mrs. Hillary (Integrity) Clinton and Mr Barack (Change is good) Obama. I think either McCain or Rice could ably lead this country- so I have no objections to that ticket.
I am so tired of listening to those two spineless Democrats telling everyone anything they want to hear, never intending to fulfill any of their putrid bloated promises.
You want free health care- you got it.
You want the world to love you- you got it.
You want to buy that house you cant afford- you got it.
You want national security but no soldiers hurt- you got it.
You want more promises- here are more lies.
On and on and on…

Sorry Nick,

A McCain/Rice ticket doesn't do it for us. We've pressed our noses to the window long enough. We think a woman, or a black man can actually go to the ball. Imagine that?

OBAMA!!!

SAM Q, CALIFORNIA   April 9th, 2008 9:07 pm ET

THE MAIN REASON THE REPUBLICAN PARTY WILL LOSE TO PRESIDENT OBAMA IS BECAUSE OF GEORGE BUSH´S OVERALL FAILED POLICIES OVER THE PAST SEVEN YEARS. JOHN McCAIN ALONE REPRESENTS AN ATTEMPT TO WIN A THIRD TERM FOR BUSH. CONDOLEEZA RICE WILL REPRESENT BUSH´S FOURTH TERM. HOW CAN TWO NEGATIVES ADDED TOGETHER GIVE A POSITIVE ANYTHING, LET ALONE A REPUBLICAN WIN? THOSE BEHIND THE POLLS SHOULD ASK THE RUSSIANS TO HELP WITH THE MATHEMATICS.

Other than Cheney, I can’t think of anyone with less credibility than Secretary Rice.

She epitomizes the concept of political “stooge”.

She was a poor National Security Advisor (Some advice she gave huh?)
She is an ineffective Secretary of State (has she accomplished anything?)

She really needs to go back to academia. She did a good job there and I think it is a more appropriate level for her.

Obama Has Substance   April 9th, 2008 9:05 pm ET

Hello, Obama is a winner all over the World. A recent Polls taken in Canada shows that he would win over Hillary 9 percent and over John Mccain 37 percent. The same will happen in America. He will over any of the Candidate. The American people are seeing that there is something special about this man. Mr. Mccain is a nice descent man and is held with high respect. But is time for him to resign and let the younger generation put American back on the Map. To the Clintons and McCain this is just about Power. They really don't concern about the poor, the waste of money on unnecessary war, the lost of lives etc., This is all about Power. for them. This is also about their ego. How dear a blackman want to take this power away from me. This is my time. No this is not your time. This is for the people of American, especially the young who wants their voice to be heard for the firt in years. Give them this change. Please give Obama chance. Obama will reach accoss the isles to learn from all of you veteran Mr. McCain, he will not be too proud to reach out to everyone for the good of his country America.

Nick Erban   April 9th, 2008 9:04 pm ET

Condi Rice is the smartest woman in America, and certainly meets the qualifications needed to be VP or President. Hillary is simply not qualified to be the leader of the Free World, and Obama is even less qualified.

The vast majority of Republicans would be thrilled with a McCain/Rice ticket in November.

KCM   April 9th, 2008 9:03 pm ET

Did they conduct this poll at a Stupid People Convention? Surely this type of convention exists somewhere in the world….

Sarah Smith   April 9th, 2008 8:59 pm ET

Hillary visibly appears worn out.. more blubbery every day.

I'm tired of hearing "you know…….." she sounds like an old hippy.

Hillary is such a trash (keep it clean, don't say _hore) of scandals compared to everyone else in the limelight.

Condi is one woman to watch.. I'd prefer her to be the republican nominee

I can see Condi up there with Margaret Thatcher in history.

(I am a pale skin, blue eyed, female boomer).

I know this post won't make the grade. but somebody somewhere is digesting this data.

Erik   April 9th, 2008 8:57 pm ET

So a career academic and bureaucrat who has never been elected to a public office would be an attractive candidate, but a third-party candidate wouldn't stand a chance. We're one messed-up electorate.

Roman Freixenet   April 9th, 2008 8:56 pm ET

I liked Rice at the beginning, but not advising Bush on not going to war, that´s just unforgibable. Rough luck, but that´s the way things are. Better choice would be Ron Paul, very capable on economic issues, and heck, together with McCain, they add up about 200 years lol.

Jay   April 9th, 2008 8:56 pm ET

McCain/ Rice, will destroy Obama & anybody. If Clinton gets the nomination she could be competitive with the right VP choice. I hear all the Obamabots screaming because Condi would take away a good percentage of the black and the female vote from him. Then if Hillary's supporters vote for McCain…Can you say landslide for the Repubs of epic proportions?

Jose, New York City   April 9th, 2008 8:54 pm ET

This is why Democracy does not work, people are idiots. Why would anyone want four more years of this?! For those who voted Bush during the last two elections, please (pretty please) lock yourself in a closet on Nov. 4th.

Jack Robertson   April 9th, 2008 8:53 pm ET

Don't think that a McCain-Rice ticket can't win. It may not be a marriage of brains but great intellect wasn't an impediment to victory for several White House occupants - Nixon, Reagan and George W.Bush to name just a few in modern times. There were probably many more in the past who weren't hampered by a lack of grey matter either. What is truly disturbing is that so many Americans vilify their brightest president of the modern era - Jimmy Carter. It's too bad that there won't be anyone of his intellectual caliber (save perhaps Ralph Nader) on the ballot this November.

EBJ   April 9th, 2008 8:53 pm ET

wait a minute here, we ARE talking about REPUBLICANS are we not? The party that so lacks diversity that they don't even try to court the Hispanic or African American vote. And you think the GOP and far right wingers would allow a black woman to be THAT close to holding the most powerful office on the planet? Sorry but I don't buy it and when I see people like Rush and Hannity and Coulter and Billy as representation of that party I KNOW it won't ever happen. And it's too bad in a way because I would have hoped as a nation we would have gotten beyond that. The man that introduced McCain yesterday by belittling Tiger Woods and the senator only hugged him afterwards spoke volumes to me. The closest we will get to a minority in such a high office will come from the Democrats and not from the Grand Old Party as long as they have a far right wing.

Tim   April 9th, 2008 8:50 pm ET

These hypothetical polls are useless. You are basically asking whether someone would vote for an established candidate versus a novelty. Put McCain and Rice on the ticket and I guarantee they will not carry New York.

RationalHumanBeing   April 9th, 2008 8:48 pm ET

Complete, utter nonsense. The notion that McCain/Rice could win in NYC?? Absurd. I think Marist College needs to fire its statistics department or whomever did this survey.

Cliff Murdock   April 9th, 2008 8:48 pm ET

You have to be kidding. The most effective slogans for those opposed to McCain are "McSame" and "four more years". Condoleeza on the ticket will only confirm the truth of these tags.

As one who will vote for Hillary and/or Obama, I'm torn. One part of me says put her on the McCain ticket. They will lose and this pollster will never get another contract again. But the other part of me says let Stanford have her. Or better yet, please, Stanford, take her!

AC   April 9th, 2008 8:48 pm ET

Finally, a woman on the ticket with REAL experience.

Kentucky   April 9th, 2008 8:47 pm ET

I don't know what the polls say but I don't believe a word of it.

Conservative Jim   April 9th, 2008 8:44 pm ET

I think it was Derrick that thought Condy Rice is not intelligent. She has an earned doctorate, which is a lot more than most politicians. I think with her knowledge of the terrorist enemy, and her grace under pressure, I would definately vote for Mc Cain if he chose her.

nancy   April 9th, 2008 8:44 pm ET

It would be an unbeatable ticket. Wisdom and strength of character coupled with youth, intelligence and knowledge of the worlds leaders. You'll see.

xtina   April 9th, 2008 8:43 pm ET

I've heard Secretary Rice state in interviews that she isn't interested in elected office, that the only job other than her Cabinet appt in which she's interested is commissioner of football. No offense, but I thought I heard cnn doesn't speculate. Why is cnn running this "what if" scenario as if it's news? It's speculation.

Indiana Bob   April 9th, 2008 8:42 pm ET

The poll sounds pretty accurate to me. I have voted Democratic since 1972. There is no way I will vote for a ticket that includes Obama. I will vote for McCain, no matter who his running mate is. Not sour grapes, it is just a fact that Obama is not at all ready to be President. Clinton and McCain are ready.

JCH in Philly   April 9th, 2008 8:41 pm ET

I like the idea… Unlike Obama (who grew up in Hawaii and Thailand), Condi (who is 10 years older than Obama) actually lived through the civil rights struggle and overcame racism and inequality, and, once the American people have a chance to hear her story and learn who she is, could inspire people about the greatness and opportunity of our country (not all of those terrible things that someone's pastor likes to spew!!).

Nick from Atlanta   April 9th, 2008 8:41 pm ET

This poll is ludicrous. The only thing it really illustrates is the fact that voters are suffering from primary fatigue. Any advantages a McCain/Rice ticket would potentially hold would certainly be negated once the clueless independents realize that this would truly be a third Bush/Cheney term.

Condi is even smarter than Cheney, so it makes even less sense for a person of that mental capacity to have held the positions she has for so long. It's either a morally bankrupt lust for power, or there's something seriously wrong with her.

Vicky   April 9th, 2008 8:40 pm ET

If the Republican Party runs the "dream ticket" they will be offering the independent voter another choice. It is not going to happen but worth considering. Campbell Brown needs a more fair and balanced type of commentaries on her program. It seems too pro Obama and hey…is there not another political party besides the Demos out there?

Todd from Michigan   April 9th, 2008 8:39 pm ET

How wonderful. Four Obama supporters on tonight's Election Center. Maybe you are all right. We need a president who will do nothing, as Jesse says, "None of the Above" is a vote for Obama.

Carol   April 9th, 2008 8:37 pm ET

This poll really surprises me. How could only 30% of the population support Bush, and 81% of the population feel the nation is headed in the wrong direction, yet a continuation of the same people/policies would win big?

I really don't get it. Is it that the Democratic candidates are so weak? Can anyone take a poll as to WHY this ticket would win? It doesn't seem to make sense.

Sam   April 9th, 2008 8:36 pm ET

Go Condi! Would love to see this ticket! At least she has experience!

Sue in Fl   April 9th, 2008 8:33 pm ET

Is this the same woman that went shopping when New Orleans and its citizens were drowning and dying? She has never spoken a word of her own. It has been just a re-run of what McCain says. Have you really ever heard this woman speak?

I am an independant voter….this year I am going to push that "Dem" button on the voters ballot.

It's the policy   April 9th, 2008 8:33 pm ET

It's the Irak policy we are against. Rice is a fine person who travelled the world without being given authority to accomplish anything. It does not matter who is on the republican ticket. it's their policy we don't agree with.

Mike from arizona   April 9th, 2008 8:33 pm ET

The media is bored, this election is over.It will be a democrat because voters will be voting on "Change or more of the same.Isn't it obvious.

Tammy Collins   April 9th, 2008 8:31 pm ET

Hillary is a liar. If Sen. Clinton is the nominee, i am sure McCain/Rice team would easily win, that's a guarantee. Only way democrats can win is Sen. Obama and someone else other than sen. clinton on the ticket.

Bob   April 9th, 2008 8:30 pm ET

Hillary winning only by 2 points in her home state where she is a senator - BYE BYE, HILLARY.

Hillary, you are done!

Dave   April 9th, 2008 8:30 pm ET

Look. Condi went from a sharecropper family to National Security Advisor via Alabama> U of Denver, Stanford, George Schultz picked from that tree for the Young Bush-Cheney team. Janice Rodgers Brown did the same think. Share cropper family > San Francisco radical schooling, picked up by Pete Wilson, and now she awaits the supreme court. Its all about getting picked up! Colin Powell was dropped. FROM California:

Nixon's California republicans have helped all the woman out except one Maria Schriver.

Looks like its this California style or New Jersey for them.

Think outside the box.

Oh Brother   April 9th, 2008 8:30 pm ET

This is just plain absurd. No one knows anything about Condi, for all the public knows she could be an axe murderer. This might be the most ridiculous poll I have ever seen.No republican is going to carry New York, not this year. What I cant figure out is what would be peoples motivation.McCain will lose NY by 15-25% how is a relatively unknown Vp candidate going to make that big of a difference?I think this is a crock.

E. C., Houston, Texas   April 9th, 2008 8:29 pm ET

Any person on this board who would even suggest that either McCain or Rice are incompetent doesn't know anything about either or what each has accomplished in his or her lifetime. Anyone who would think this is uninformed and probably quite undereducated and ignorant.

I like it and as a democrat I'd vote for that ticket if Obama was
the dem's nominee. He certainly wouldn't have woman on his ticket.

HD   April 9th, 2008 8:27 pm ET

Go ahead and do it McCain. If it is McCain-Rice, then we are really looking at the third term for George W Bush's legacy, which most people do not want.

Rice in the White House will be a continuation of the same horrible policites that she has helped carry out over the past few years. That is the main problem with this ticket.

To the poster…"also scared of obama supporters"…..you are obviously a woman….but people don't want Hillary because of the secretive scandals the Clintons have been involved in and they are ready for a change. There has been a Bush or Clinton in the White House as Pres or VP since 1980! 28 years!!! That is why people prefer Obama over Hillary……it is time for change and people don't trust the Clintons as much after being lied to by Bill.

tell the truth   April 9th, 2008 8:27 pm ET

Also Scared of Obama supporters. What are you talking about? Stop Crying Obama is winning and will beat McCain also. Look at the facts. People will turn against McCain because he has did nothing for America regarding issues like the encomy, health care, etc. Yes he is a war hero but that will not make him a great president. Sexism is not fine in this country but yes we do have it. I will tell the truth unlike somepoeple. The media does not have anything against Hilliary. She is the one that is misspeaking(lol). Please stop and read and do research. I did and will vote for Obama

YES, without a doubt, it would Win Big.

Cheryl Fontaine   April 9th, 2008 8:24 pm ET

Two losers do not make a winner. Who ran this poll anyway, their spouses?

The media likes to kill Hillary because she is a LIAR, not because she is a woman.

Tim   April 9th, 2008 8:24 pm ET

Are you kidding? This poll couldnt possibly be right. Rice is a BUSH CRONY. She's a worse liar than Hillary. Not a chance in hell she helps him get support in NY. He probably gets the same numbers in NY without her and even that is merely a result of the Democrat infighting, which will end once of them is the nominee.

Fran   April 9th, 2008 8:21 pm ET

Who are you people polling?? All I can say is………………and this means what? A Bush white house is no more, no matter who McCain picks.

Rob   April 9th, 2008 8:18 pm ET

Wasn't the last congress America's so called vote for change? Last time I remember seeing it, this congress has a lower public approval rating than even Bush does. Thats not change, thats status quo…

That was good try with the we need change card there Democrat's No wonder you guys can't win the white house in the last 8 years.

Republicans? Just as bad, lesser of the two evils if thats possible to say. Seeing how this current election is going, I want to vote for a clean sweep do over. Everybody out of office, all new people how hopefully aren't as corrupt.

DNC sucks   April 9th, 2008 8:15 pm ET

I've traditionally been a moderate democrat, but this, I may consider if Hillary doesn't make it.

cheersdk   April 9th, 2008 8:14 pm ET

NY will not go Republican, those new yokahs are fooling the pollsters so that McCain picks Rice, a sure loosing ticket. Rice's management skills and performance suggest she stay in academia or at best perhaps a token spot for sec. of education. She was lucky to get sec. of state at a time when the country needed a Middle-East expert first, Latin-America, Africa or even Europe expert second, not necessarily a Russia expert.

Lifelong Democrat   April 9th, 2008 8:13 pm ET

Hillary Supporters join me in voting for McCain in November!!!

We cant let the media choose the President…

McCain is simply a better candidate than Obama.

If we can get just 10% of Clinton Supporters (which is about 40% of the voting public) to vote for McCain or vote for someone else over Obama we can block him from winning in November.

I don't care if you're a war hero or have been in the White House for the last 8 years, that does not mean you are suitable to run this country. If there was a McCain-Rice ticket and neither Obama or Hillary were running, heck, I'd vote be willing to vote anybody as President, even for Gary Coleman as long as those worthless two are not in the White House. McCrazy-Rice is just plain wrong!

Vote Democratic!

jl   April 9th, 2008 8:07 pm ET

WAS THIS POLL ONLY TAKEN IN NY?

I think about now, anyone would beat a ticket with Clinton on it- DUH!

Tom   April 9th, 2008 8:06 pm ET

I think McCain knows this would actually be a horrible ticket. He would be hitching his wagon even more to Bush's utterly failed policies. Rice has been carrying Bush's water for eight years, and I believe the last thing McCain would want is to have that baggage walking around his campaign. It may look good to some right now, but that's a superficial analysis. The Democrats would eat that ticket alive. It would basically be a war ticket, a tax breaks for the rich ticket, a destroy the environment ticket. That's pretty much what McCain would do anyway, but this would just make a big billboard of it and make the failed war policies a continuous issue. You want it, Republicans! Go right ahead!

Paul   April 9th, 2008 8:06 pm ET

They would have my vote. She would make a great VP.

Nick, TX   April 9th, 2008 8:05 pm ET

No way that would ever happen. It was because they put Hillay Clinton and Barack Obama on the same ticket while their race is still going on. Not only is it not a real poll (as soon as the Democrats have a nominee every pollster knows they will get a bounce in polls against McCain) but both Obama and Clinton could beat that ticket if they were running with other people.

Janet   April 9th, 2008 8:05 pm ET

They get my vote.

Jack   April 9th, 2008 8:02 pm ET

Condoleezza Rice on the Republican ticket would be GREAT……. for Democrats!! (for obvious reasons) LOL

Awuh Wilson, Bryant AR   April 9th, 2008 7:58 pm ET

McCain has a shot at the november election. There are great chances that he might win if the Howard Dean misfunction Democratic party don't get their act together the sooner.
Meanwhile, including Condi Rice in his ticket is tantamount to failure. Rice comes with all the stigma of Gearge Bush II and nightmares of a possible Geaorge Bush III term. Nope, that ticket is a looser.

the general   April 9th, 2008 7:57 pm ET

I really hope Rice does run with Maccain I think it would be great as a country and a whole there would no better person to fill that spot.
she has all the experience in foreign affairs that we need.

Black Man for Hillary   April 9th, 2008 7:56 pm ET

She won't take the offer. She's already seen what the media does to a woman running for office. There is an interesting video on that "video" web site everyone should watch just once. It might disturb you as much as the Reverend Wright comments.

Rainman   April 9th, 2008 7:55 pm ET

That poll is all about initial name recognition and little else. There's little evidence Rice would be good candidate, and she'd enter the general election carrying all of the negative baggage from her eight years in the Bush administration. Some of the criticism would be overblown, but she'd be a representative of a very unpopular administration. The Democrats would not let that connection go unnoticed.

Mark Battle   April 9th, 2008 7:55 pm ET

God help us all.

Tommy in St. Louis   April 9th, 2008 7:54 pm ET

McCain is going to catch a lot of flak as it is for being the same as Bush and continuing the same failed policies. So why would he confirm that in everybody's eyes by choosing somebody right out of the Bush Administration as his running mate?

Dan Carter   April 9th, 2008 7:53 pm ET

Rice as VP is about the only chance for the Republicans to win the upcoming election.

The Dems have a woman and a mulatto fighting each other for their party's nomination. Either as a candidate for President will present a truly historic scenario.

For the GOP to have an African-American woman on the ticket… that would be an unstoppable force. Sorry, Bill Clinton, you're wrong again.

blinky   April 9th, 2008 7:53 pm ET

i look forward to seeing mccain in a debate. he's intelligent, articulate, experienced, respected on both sides of the aisle. it would be a good match against obama, who is also articulate and intelligent. but obama is still cruising on venom (not his venom, that of the people who plan to vote for him). he'll run dry soon, and then dems may find themselves wishing hillary had won. the only difference between bush 00 and obama 08 is GPA, and the fact that bush won.

Morgan   April 9th, 2008 7:52 pm ET

That is the stupidest thing I've heard in a long, long time. There is no serious poll anywhere that shows that McCain-Rice could beat any democrat in NY, or anywhere else for that matter. Rice is a complete incompetent with absolutely no appeal to anyone besides George Bush.

How is she going to explain her failures, 9-11, Iraq, Israel-Palestine, Russia, which was supposed to be her strength,….. has she done anything even remotely interpretable as successful?

She is an arrogant idiot much too stupid to respond to changing situations. When reality conflicts with her neat little axiomatic dream world she consistently refuses to accept reality.

Ben   April 9th, 2008 7:52 pm ET

Horrible ticket.

Price Lister   April 9th, 2008 7:51 pm ET

How about Joe Leiberman? He has endorsed McCain. Republican and a moderate Democrat. How could that lose?

Jeff   April 9th, 2008 7:51 pm ET

Yeah, we're going to swallow McBush and Bush's Iraq apologist for 4 years. Don't think so.

Suziku   April 9th, 2008 7:49 pm ET

I absolutely cannot believe this poll. With both of these people being so closely tied to gw bush, with the bush war continuing on endlessly, the lies that condoleeza rice told to the congress, with the horrible path this country has been taken down in the last 8 years, with the record number of Democrats registered to vote, with Republicans crossing over to the Democratic side as well as Independents, it seems highly "UNlikely" that this ticket would be a winner! Who are these people polling? Maybe the same people who voted for bush twice?! Maybe the same 30% that blindly still think he's doing a good job (brownie)?!

The Dudester   April 9th, 2008 7:48 pm ET

She can't even run the State Department and has screwed up as National Security Adviser. Of course, this would be vindication of the Peter Principle.

So, New York would go bonkers and vote for a GOP ticket with a WAR CRIMINAL on the ticket? Of course when she went outside the country being the Vice-President would give her diplomatic immunity. So, you are reporting that New York would vote for a person who lied under oath to the 9/11 Commission. Wow! Is this an April Fool joke?

Concerning Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, she is the highest ranking elected Democratic official in Congress so her voice has added weight over any other Democratic politician.

I can only see Senator Clinton's being on the ticket as a Vice-Presidential candidate. Her conduct with Health care Insurance in 1993 was a disaster much like Wilson with the League of Nations, but worst. She voted for legislation enabling Bush to take this country to war without reading it. What kind of judgment is that? She has lectured the other candidates about her judgment inspite of this, then voted for the Iranian resolution. There is a pattern here.

She better learn to compete and present her strengths and shore up her weaknesses if she wants to win, because complaining and dishing out guilt turns me off. Again her judgment is deeply flawed. Her sniper stories are way past getting the facts wrong. This goes to character and integrity. The best female Democratic politician did not run. Speaker Pelosi beats Senators Clinton and Obama hands down on experience, pragmatism, leadership, judgment, integrity, and the proven ability to work across the aisle.

luggar   April 9th, 2008 7:47 pm ET

I think the McCain-Rice ticket would probably be the best thing this country has seen since Reagan.McCain has the military experience and C.Rice has the intelligence ,A powerhouse for sure..As an unhappy dem. We would vote for them

Washington, DC   April 9th, 2008 7:46 pm ET

I supported the Clintons for eight years. When I made my decision to support Barack Obama it wasn't lightly. His healthcare plan is one of the reasons I am voting for him. As a woman I feel really offended when I read comments about how the media is unfair to Hillary because she is a woman. People do not like Hillary because she is a woman. People, may not like her because of her policies (remember she is extremely liberal — universal healthcare mandate — and has only come to the middle to try and get more votes) foremost, but her character, leadership ability, morals and inauthenticity are surely more plausible reasons to not like her. It is hard to like people who lie so easily. It is hard to trust people who make a sport out of "politics" and it is hard to be fair to people who have a long standing record of valuing loyalty over all else. Do not slam the media, and use the gender card to do it. Take a good long hard look at the quality of character of the person that is disliked and try and understand that people are just really sick and tired of "The Clintons" and are ready for a new type of Democratic leadership. An honest leadership.

ED   April 9th, 2008 7:46 pm ET

Hillary would have won the primary by now if the media wasn't so bias against her. We're living in such a sexist society. I think we're still intimidated by a powerful woman figure and far from ready for a woman president.

Dem in Chicago   April 9th, 2008 7:41 pm ET

Since when 3% a "big win"? Besides it's not going to be Obama and Clinton on the same ticket, which is not the "dream ticket" the pundits say it is. It's going to be Obama and someone else, someone with a military background like Wesley Clark or Sen. Webb, and we'll win NY, CA and a wide swath of states in between. Keep underestimating the dems chance this Nov, at your peril. This is the democrats' year. Mark my words.

Obama has no chance of winning no matter who McCain's VP is. But yeah, if the Republicans want to absolutely slaughter the Demoncrats, Rice would do it.

Rachel   April 9th, 2008 7:39 pm ET

As a Democrat, I would be happy to see Rice on the Republican ticket - because it furthers the point that a vote for McCain is a vote for a third term of Bush policies. Surely America is not stupid enough to want that?

JD   April 9th, 2008 7:39 pm ET

A McCain and Rice Ticket ?

This story and the poll is a waste of time because there isn't going to be an Obama-Clinton ticket, the comparison is inherently flawed in that manner. Plus once the democratic convention is held allegiances will realign with the chosen candidate. CNN and the polling agency, stop wasting people's time.

I would really like to know who they asked! I would encourage that ticket thought because I am a democrat it would be doomed to failure. It would also seem like a desperate attempt by the republicans to stop Obama's momentum that is sad republicans would never have allowed a women or black man to get anywhere near a presidential ticket until it came down to a black man and women on the democrat side then they start trying to make them selves look better and take the image of a old white man away from there ticket so sad.

Go Obama 08

Whut… sorry, whut?
Exactly where did this marvelous bit of polling data come from. Is this one of those sophisticated “pulled from between the buttocks cheeks” polls ‘cause those have been proven to be highly suspect… seriously “a McCain-Rice ticket would beat a ticket that includes both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama in New York”.
What’s next “Polling shows night is day and black is white?”.

Akinola   April 9th, 2008 7:34 pm ET

This is reverse engineering! Mccain/Rice is a losing ticket anyday……democrats, lets push for it by saying it will be a winning ticket. I personally cant wait to see an Obama/Hagel ticket vs a Mccain/Rice ticket, its all psychology, i really want mccain to pick rice, they wil soooo lose!!

Neil   April 9th, 2008 7:34 pm ET

Yes, Condoleezza Rice please be McCain's VP. We need a sure win in the White House for the Democrats. With you showing that McCain is for the McSame, the Democrats will have no problem winning the White House, especially of the clip of you saying the threats to America were very vague and how there was no way to know about the 9/11 attacks, after a memo titled, "Osama Bin Laden determined to attack the United States" was given to you.

CJ   April 9th, 2008 7:33 pm ET

Dr. Rice would be an excellent choice for VP, and an even better one for the Presidency. She has done an admirable job in every post she has held. Smart, intelligent, and true international experience. However, she shouldn't run until the Republican Party can get its act together, instead of running left.

As for all of the posters remarking on her ineptitude, and ineffectiveness, I can only say this: If her amazing accomplishments and achievements constitute a life of failure, there are NO words that can fully capture how utterly USELESS your lives have been.

ShannonL   April 9th, 2008 7:32 pm ET

I hope for the DNC that we have a Hillary/Edwards ticket and that would trump yours. Praying the voters and superdelegates pick a person who can win in the general election.

JMS   April 9th, 2008 7:27 pm ET

The Dems are gonna loose this next election because they have played two isms against each other. Racism and Feminism butting heads on the national stage pushes the dems appart. McCain/Rice would win hands down no contest. Then 4 years from now Rice would be the first Woman and the first African American to be President of the USA. Canada should build a wall to keep all the liberals out :)

Cold Water   April 9th, 2008 7:24 pm ET

A McCain-Rice ticket would carry the national vote because, at the end of the day, Americans are going to be risk-averse in picking a president. McCain and Rice both have experience that Obama and Clinton lack. Rice is also, like Obama, highly intelligent and eloquent. For all these people that say Rice hasn't accomplished anything, I wonder if they notice that North Korea's nuclear reactors aren't running anymore. I wonder if they notice that our diplomats have secured the backing of France and Germany in dealing with Iran. Opponents of the Bush White House also don't give her enough credit for making sure Cheney and Rumsfeld didn't always get their way. But all of this is incidental — the important point is that the Democrats are going to make the same mistakes they have in the past. They will lose this election as long as they insist on raising taxes and pulling out of Iraq precipitously. Like it or not, Americans will prefer stability over change.

Tim   April 9th, 2008 7:24 pm ET

I am an independent totally disgusted with the Bush administration. That being said, I have actually been leaning towards McCain over either Clinton or Obama because I believe him to be more centrist than either of the Democratic candidates. BUT, if he were to pick Rice as his running mate, I'd vote for ANY Democratic ticket over McCain-Rice. Rice is a toady; she's a highly-educated toady, but a toady nonetheless. There's no way in Hades McCain will choose her as his running mate.

Dan1967   April 9th, 2008 7:23 pm ET

This poll is within the margin of error, and I don't think McCain and Rice would win New York. These polls don't take in to account the record setting voter turnout that the Democrats will have in November. But if this poll is accurate, then the people in our country are really as stupid as I think they are. Why are the people in our country so dumb? A Secretary of State is supposed to be an independant thinker. Rice was just a Bush crony who cozied up to him and agreed with everything that he said. She never has an opinion of her own on anything other then to agree with Bush. McCain and Rice would be the equivalent of Bush and Cheney.

VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA AND LETS GET A DEMOCRAT WIN IN NOVEMBER!

So Mr. Scared of Obama Supporters sounds like you should be scared of yourself and the party that has your vote.

Dave, Buffalo NY   April 9th, 2008 7:22 pm ET

Condoleeza Rice can run circles around any of us posting here. There are a lot of Democrats who would make fine VP's or Presidents, as well (remember, VP's are second in line of succession) but Clinton and Obama aren't two of them, in my opinion; Senators Dodd and Biden and even Al Gore would have been very good choices this year. She could get a job that paid better with a lot less stress in the private sector, so I can't imagine why she would be interested in being the VP nominee, but under a different President, perhaps a VP who was there as the Iraq war deepened could be one of the better choices to help us withdraw more into the background.

Obama supporters are teachers, veterans, and other Americans who do not buy into the Republicans who have terrible policies and live off of making you scared. It is a fact.

McCain who I used to love is now a GOP puppet and will adopt the same failed policy as Rice, Rove, Rumsfeld, and Bush.

No more of the same!

All you anti Obama voters who do not want a true healthcare plan and want to stay in Iraq forever, give him a chance. See what he can do in four years, if he sucks, you can go back to more of the same: Clinton, McCain, Romney.
Even with McCain it could never get as bad as the worst administration of all time!

The poll result is certainly intriguing and substantiates the thoughts that have been an undercurrent in the Republican party for some time now. Despite sincere misgivings on the part of both Ms. Rice and Senator McCain the pair would certainly run well against either of the probable Democratic frontrunners. Whether the Senator can manage to swallow his pride and ask the real superstar of the party to join him is debatable.

It's a moot point. There's never going to be any such thing as an Obama/Clinton ticket…or a Clinton/Obama ticket.

Why would Obama stoop to such a level as to put someone as dreadful as Clinton on the same ticket with him?

Why would Obama choose a running mate who 47% of the country says they "can't stand?" That would be a death wish to his presidential bid.

Obama and ANYONE else would be a stronger ticket than Obama with Clinton.

It would be bad to see Rice take the VP

this displays a message "if the dems need to run either a black or a woman, then HERE, we republicans got both a black and woman rolled right into one pacakage."

This happend in illinois. The republicans get so scared of the race vote that they ran Alan Keyes in this just so it could be a black vs black style of race. Even Alan Keyes tried pulling the race card out in that debate claiming that he was the "blacker" candidate.

Rice, if you're gonna run, don't run because McCain needs a token on his ticket. Especially shame on republicans trying to pick minorities just to get a vote. Go get Romney or Lieberman, they are both qualified people.

I would rather be pouring my tax dollars into a war than additional social programs, and as far as the economy goes, it was running pretty smoothly until the Democrats took Congress.

Ito, Yokosuka Japan   April 9th, 2008 7:08 pm ET

While I think Rice as a VP to McCain is once again subordinating her talents and intellect to an inferior boss; having Rice on any ticket would be huge. She is arguably one the smartest people on this planet.

Hillary Clintons pretends to be Smart. Obama is smart, but no more or less than the average American (which makes him smarter than just about every politician). McCain is neither a policy wonk like Clinton and he is not quite as smart as Obame; but he doesn't have the ego problems Hillary suffers from. All that said, Condi Rice destroy any of the above in a debate and that intense look on her face is, in itself, enough to force any world leader into submission.

If Condi Rice entered the political frey in the race for the next President, she would a God among mortals. She is black, she is a woman, and she is hands down an intelectual juggernaught compared to any other candidate running. Our country would be saved at last.

They are trying to ease their guilty consciences for putting King George in office the last two times and think that voting for her (Republican-lite branded by Bill Clinton himself) is their way out of an internal moral dilemma. You don't redefine the Democratic party by melding into a lighter, more palatable version of more of the same.

they are only looking at Rice in a purely aesthetic way…her judgment has been poor..she has been a poor leader…this was brought out over Iraq. On paper it looks good, going against Obama and probably a white male or female VP then a white-guy and black woman should be able to balance out and get some people excited to vote for something different…but thats it, she would not only represent 8 years of Bush even MORE than McCain, but at the same time she has been criticized for her ineptitude.

Does anyone else think this poll if pure fiction?

That's it! Just like when Bush Sr. put dumb azz Clarence Thomas on the the Supreme Court. Throw the black people a bone, regardless of any knowledge of the policies that have concerned the community. The truth is, who cares? This is the same fool who had an intelligence report in her hand about plans for terrorists to fly airplanes into buildings, and DID NOTHING. NOTHING. I'll stick with Obama because I like him as an individual and his policies are in line with mine. The Republicans didn't think enough of women, blacks, or any other minority, regardless of qualification, at any time before now? Why in world would anyone think this is genuine? Do us all a favor Condi: stick by your word and go back to Standford.

These are really good news.

McCain and Rice have more experience and better credentials than Obama and anyone else. Rice has been the cooling influence vs the Rumsfelds. Wouldnt it be better to have her intelligence and state dept experience on day 1?
