A Clinton Indiana campaign office was engulfed in flames Friday morning.
A Clinton Indiana campaign office was engulfed in flames Friday morning.

TERRE HAUTE, Indiana (AP) – Firefighters are investigating a blaze that destroyed the presidential campaign office of Hillary Clinton in Terre Haute.

The fire broke out after midnight Friday, and flames were coming from the building when firefighters arrived. No one was reported injured.

Homeland security spokeswoman Pam Bright said an investigator from the state fire marshal's office is heading to the scene.

Clinton is battling Illinois Sen. Barack Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination. Both candidates have set up offices throughout Indiana as they vie for the state's 72 delegates in the May 6 primary.

Clinton's campaign had no immediate comment. Two calls to the Terre Haute Fire Department spokesman were not immediately returned.

UPDATE:
Clinton spokesman Mo Elleithee tells CNN's Suzanne Mavleaux state fire marshals are investigating the cause and "no one was hurt."

Clinton spokesman Isaac Baker also said, "we’re grateful no one was hurt and we’re cooperating fully with investigators."

Clinton has set up offices 21 offices to date in Indiana, announcing just yesterday new offices in Kokomo, Lafayete and Marion.

Well sounds like no one was hurt in the fire, so let's be thankful for that.

Typical of them :)

This has no reflection on the Obama campaign and should not be suggested as such.

Hmmmm . . . interesting twist . . . Obama is going to be in Terre Haute today . . . looks like his supporters are once again up to their mature games . . . Obama, I'd suggest you practice what you preach and start uniting your followers!

I am sure she staged t his, in order to blame Senator Obama, after all she said she will do whatever it takes………. and it is personal.
anyone saw the report about the Clinton's millions which is in their foundation which comes from the saudis and many other corrupt people,………….amazing, if you are still voting for this family to get to the white house, you are not just blind or deaf, and ignorant, but you just dont care about your children and your own future.

Praetorian, Fort Myers   April 11th, 2008 9:11 am ET

I hope the "way left" has not added arson to their political arsenal–to propogate their socialist agenda.

Joyce in Florida   April 11th, 2008 9:11 am ET

Well this is surprising and frightening. I hope they find out how this fire started as quickly as possible. Sounds suspicious to me. I do not want to contemplate how fire started. I hope it was not arson. And, if it is, this campaign is really getting nasty and the person or persons who did this are really sick!!! I am glad that the people who were there were not injured. If it turns out to be arson, I cannot fathom that someone who either hates Hillary Clinton or is an Obama supporter could endanger someone's life and possibly others in close proximity. Hope they find answers later today. Senator Clinton, please stay safe and keep fighting in this campaign. We love you. GO HILLARY 08!!!!!!!!!!

Kel from AL   April 11th, 2008 9:14 am ET

Wow! I really hope this wasn't the work of foul play… Sounds like a minor office, though, and considering the fact that campaigns open multiple offices, I don't think this has much of an impact in the grand scheme of things.

Come to think of it, this is hardly political. Somewhat interesting, but surely there are better things to report, right, CNN? What gives?

Maria Loi   April 11th, 2008 9:14 am ET

I don't understand why the American people do not realised what they are getting into by believing Obama.
Anyway, it will be a very sad day for America when Obama is nominated and also elected as the next President of United States.
His supporters had used high handedness to get cascus votes in Texas . Obama is not only bold and cunning but unreal. He said himself, that he grew up in Indonesia in his speech and he had foreign experience there, and Pakistan. I know through being a neighbour of Indonesia how cunning people are over there. By the way, he is definitely a Muslim at heart, educated in a radical primary school in Indonesia. His school mates had formed a fan club to get ready to cheer him when he is elected as the next President of United States.

Debbie IN TEXAS   April 11th, 2008 9:25 am ET

I don't doubt for a minute that it's one of Obama's campaign's dirty tactics to destroy whatever possible support Hillary has for her campaign. It amazes me to see how people don't see how dirty his side can be. I saw it personally during the caucus' here in San Antonio, how dirty they can play and yet have no shame about it. Sad to think people think Obama is such an inspiration. Now turns out he's involved with the mob, and George Soros (billionaire who owns moveon.org who endorsed Obama and has given millions to his campaign…..wake up people!!!! This is scary.

While I've never been in a campaign office before, I have had my share of all-nighters when I'm under a deadline, so I just hope that no one was hurt.

For all of the puerile folks suggesting that this was done by one party or the other, I think it's much more likely that it was faulty wiring or someone left a coffee pot on. Of course, that's not sensationalist enough for CNN, so this comment will most likely not be posted.

Denny, NM   April 11th, 2008 9:29 am ET

Bill, why did you do it, she'll change her mind about NAFTA.

Hillary has serious issues   April 11th, 2008 9:30 am ET

I'm glad nobody was hurt or injured. If this was malicious, I hope they get them not only for arson but on civil rights charges for interfering with the election. As much as I think Hillary should get out of the race because she's wasting her personal, supporters' and the Party's resources, it is her right to stay in. That being said, Hillary's laughing off and casual dismissal of Bill's $800,000 for speaking in Columbia for Free Trade that she says she does not support, along with Penn's dealings at the highest level in her campaign and the Columbians should cause all blue collar Democrats some pause… Can we take her on her word? Or, is she just playing politics with us? Aren't we tired of 'politics as usual'? That's what we get with Hillary. This is a policy issue and MUCH more serious than the Rev. Wright fiasco… She needs to answer the public on this and address this as a serious candidate would and not take her constituency for granted like some popularity contest.

Holly, CA   April 11th, 2008 9:30 am ET

Jay   April 11th, 2008 9:30 am ET

Seriously!!! quit the ignorance people, turns out sometimes fires just happen and the fact that it was a clinton headquarters is likely just a random occurence, so quit pointing fingers, this has nothing to do with politics.

Dani   April 11th, 2008 9:31 am ET

Must have been set by the Obama supporters. After all they represent "change" and "hope." Whatever…..it fits the attitude you see most of his supporters use when they blog, pure hatred. Yet another reason I would never vote Obama. Not much positivity in their reflections, and certainly not a change for the better. Any person who inspires people to speak with hatred and act out in these ways is a person I want nothing to do with.

Stacy Clarks,   April 11th, 2008 9:31 am ET

I think it is outrageous that people are pointing fingers, and using what could have been fatal to point fingers!

(as an Obama supporter), I sincerly hope no one was hurt in the blaze, and I hope the Clinton campaign is able to recover from the loss of their space in Indiana, and get back to being competitive in this race

I might not support Clinton, but I would NEVER wish fire on anyone's property,

I also urge other Obama supporters to be sympathetic to this event, even if we are taunted and blamed for this, we should not turn this into a political game!!!

DEMOCRATS IN 08!!! AND FOR GOD'S SAKE, PEACE IN THE PARTY!!!!

After reading the posts by Obama supporters it reaffirms my reason to be supporting Hillary. If these are the types of individuals who write comments like these about potentially tragic events then I want no part of that movement. And on a side note, and this is what will keep my post off the sight, where was the headline:

Hillary cuts Obamas NC lead by 11 points
Gov. of Puerto Rico backing Obama arrested on corruption charges
First Oregon poll shows Obama weaker then expected

You didn't see any of these headlines but CNN sure would have had them plastered all over had the name been Hillary instead of Obama. No worries though she will win the nomination and bring unity to the nation

I must be having a nightmare! Are some Hillary supporters actually trying blame this fire on Barack Obama! WOW! If it wasn't an accident, for which I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt in this case, but absent that all evidence whether speculative or not will point to an deliberate act which will serve only to demonstrate desperation in dire circumstances. Obama supporters wouldn't need to do something like this when all the cards are in his favor. I really think that this campaign should halted immediatedly before someone is seriously hurt or killed!

Uncle Sam   April 11th, 2008 9:36 am ET

While many Americans, including myself, applaud the prospect of a man of color becoming president, the majority of the country believes that Sen. Obama is an unacceptable choice. Although he clearly possesses a great intellect and eloquence, it is simply unconscionable to elect a virtually unknown freshman senator with questionable judgment to the most powerful job on the planet.

Given that there was no reason as to the cause of the fire, we are just speculating what is the cause. Does it matter? If it was arson, yes it does. If it were an electrical fire, then the place they rented wasn't up to code (possibily), and it is a mess with no one to blame.

IF Obama is the presidential quality person you "obamaites" think that he is….he will admonish this if it was done by one of his whack job supporters. And he should vow to help in the effort of recovery. That is IF he is a great and wonderful as you all think he is. This would be in his spirit of unity (his campaign's foundation) for all….wouldn't it?!

If this is arson by a supporter of Obama it just goes to show you that some of his supporters are complete whacks.

It's funny how the Clintons always have fires or "missing" people around election time.

Tracy   April 11th, 2008 9:42 am ET

I think it's rather premature to be blaming Obama supporters for this - and if it does turn out to be an Obama supporter, I'm 100% sure Barack would never support this kind of behavior.

It's not fair to blame the actions of one individual on another, or allow it to reflect on their reputation. We have seen this over and over again these past few months.

Each individual speaks and acts for himself. Don't drag others into it.

What I found out by reading these comments is that OBAMA supporters are nasty people. All you have to do is read the first 5-10 and you can tell that his supporters just like to hate. It's too bad that they have to stoop to these levels. I actually was considering voting for OBAMA if he is the nominee. No longer, I will vote republican (McCain) for the first time in my life. I'll have hope HILLARY gets it!

Obama is winning, so why would he need to resort to such low measures…and besides, it's more of a Clinton tactic.

Distract, distract, distract!

I can't believe you Obama supporters would think this was staged. What would Hillary possible gain from having done so? You obviously aren't very smart. The only one hurt by this is Hillary's campaign because the supplies (signs and voter information) are important to the campaign and the ONLY one who has anything to gain from this is no other than OBAMA's campaign…..so there…think about that people….must I say more. The obvious is obvious!!!!!

If this was arson (regardless of who did it), they need to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. I'm not a Clinton supporter by any means (or Obama for that matter); however, both candidates deserve a fair try at the presidential race without violent or childish acts. An attack on any government official (such as burning an office) regardless of the person's political following is an act of treason.

A building caught on fire where people could've been hurt and you guys run on here to make inappropriate remarks…what would she burn her own building down for? Just stupid people who probably make stupid choices on a daily basis.

Peter in NY   April 11th, 2008 9:46 am ET

It is ironic that the Barack supporters caution Hillary and her supporters not to place the blame on her opponent. Yet, all the pro-Barack comments either insinuate that the Hillary camp is responsible or that she deserves it.

Call me crazy, but if you want to point out negative, gutter politics, you Barack supporters should look in the mirror and start correcting your own ways.

What are you doing to turn the current situation into a positive one??? From where I stand, all you guys do is criticize and knock down efforts by someone, who loves her country.

I wonder if Barack would approve?

Carlo   April 11th, 2008 9:46 am ET

Okay, people, this is getting way out of hand. It's bad enough that, because of zealous supporters and Clinton and Republican operatives, Rev. Wright and his church are getting death threats, but now people are accusing Obama supporters of starting a fire. Those are serious allegations. It has gotten to the point where an entire church's well-being and people's lives are at risk, but now supporters are willing to accuse others of a major crime before even knowing the full story. Apparently, some of you don't remember the fire in the sixties that killed those innocent young girls at an Alabama church. And I thought Rev. Wright was the borderline criminal here. Enough is enough and too much stinks.

Alex H   April 11th, 2008 9:47 am ET

You guys should all be ashamed of yourselves; Obama and Clinton supporters! You have no evidence except your own cynical and disturbed mind to accuse anyone on either the Obama or Clinton of this potentially non-political event. It shows just how little concern you have for anyone but yourself. You're showing everyone how pathetic you are. You want to make a comment about arson, wait for the fire marshal report. That's what an intelligent person does. Start acting like one!

Reese   April 11th, 2008 9:47 am ET

Hopefully, if an Obama supporter was behind this, he or she will come out and say they support Clinton, but want her out of the race.

It's sad we all think these nasty thoughts, but I guess whatever it takes to get this over with.

Richard   April 11th, 2008 9:47 am ET

No doubt the Obama supporters did it! Its overwhelming to face the fact that HIllary is heading to win 8 out of the last 10 states…..sitting well ahead in PA, IN, KY, WV, puerto rico, guam, south dakota and montana. The Obama lead on only two states…OR and NC are also shrinkiing. All this while Obama is outspending her 3-1, 4-1 and 5-1 in some cases. Last resort? burn down her campaign head quarters! as I had suggested all along…..low and dirty politics has been the Obama trade mark from the beginning….doing whatever necessary to win…I got this when I saw them begin to inject the race card and run away from the scene…as though, no one would know!

Just saw this article and I am shocked at the number of people who are blaming the other camp for the fire. It's an awful thing that happened and we should be happy no one was hurt. As a democrat, I certainly hope people start growing up soon…this is no way for us to come together to defeat the republicans in November. If this was the work of one of the camps, I am 100% positive that neither candidate had anything to do with it, it's just too low to go.

Stop shouting at each other and remember the common good here. Either candidate will be better than McCain - they share similar policy approaches and themes. I support Obama & I think he will win, but if Clinton wins I will support her as well. We're on the same team here, everyone - let's not forget that!

Brenda   April 11th, 2008 9:48 am ET

Stop the madness! Has anyone considered the possibility this is a case of wiring gone bad? It is amazing how the majority of the posters here took the slightest of infomation and turned it into a conspiracy.

Roofin Reality   April 11th, 2008 9:48 am ET

As an Obama backer, it's unfortunate this happened.
1) it could bring Clinton sympathy, like in New Hampshire, as it seems people are being unfair to her
2) Clinton could be hiding something
or 3) and most likely, it was just a fire that happened and there is no reason.

However, the report I just heard at 9:47 EDT, says that late in the night, two staffers were in the office. And, a volunteer fire fighter driving by saw smoke and helped the two staffers get out. Then, the roof collapsed.
Seems to me that the fire may have been going for some time if the roof collapsed shortly after the firefighter helped the two out. Hmm?

I will say this to all of the Obama backers, the way to win this nomination, AND the general election at the same time, is to NOT attack HRC. Rather, as Obama did last week with his statement that "she's formidable and feels she's the best…", take the high road and try to keep those backers of HRC included. Otherwise, the split will be too big to overcome McCain.

Lastly, if you look at these two candidates, their platform is 95% the same. So, if you like ones policies, you SHOULD like the other. And as a by-product, you would likely make a democratic decision in the fall. It is hoped that the friction is healed by then, otherwise we may see more of the same we have had over the last 7 years. Course if you're good over the last 7 years, then you shouldn't really be looking at the Dem ticket.
Cheers and here's wishing all a wonderful weekend.

White people keep your mouth shut!

A delegate from Chicago talked to her neighbour's children who were
climbing in a large tree in their front yard with no parent to be seen. She called to them and asked them to quit playing in the tree like "little monkeys".
Thechildren's mother called the police on her. Obama's campaign office called her and demanded her resignation from being a democratic delegate. Why? Because the children were black and she was white. She received a TICKET for disorderly conduct. (see Chicago Sun Times for complete details)
Obama, overzealous political correctness and a sign of the future.
Be black or keep your mouth shut.

I can just see the Obama strategists saying "How do we defeat Hillary? I know. Let's burn down her campaign office … in Terre Haute!"

Funnier still are those that chastise CNN for covering this. It's not on the front page, it's on the Ticker. Which is appropriate. It may have been an electrical fire. Or it may have been political intrigue. No one knows at this point. But what if the Washington Post ignored that break-in at the Watergate, a similarly innocuous event?

I am not an american but has been following this election everyday. It's getting very sad. How should people start blaming the other camp for a fire before the fire service starts its investigation. What happened in Florida in 2004 presidential election and what's going on now makes Western democracy no better than other regimes. If americans believe one of their own would set an office building ablaze for political reasons, then you are in real trouble.

If this was truly done for political gain you have to suspect McCann, Clinton and Obama; eahc of them stand to gain from the publicity. Given the lies we heard about the Bosnia sniper fire no one can exonerate her until investigation is over.

Believe me, Hillary Clinton is not going down without the Democratic Party!

Hmm this has Obama and the Black Panther written all over it.
Until recently, the New Black Panthers were linked from Obama's website.

If you're not familiar with the New Black Panthers, here's a taste of what they have to offer: (copied from their 10 point plan.)

"8. We want freedom for all Black Men and Black Women held in international, military, federal, state, county, city jails and prisons.

We believe that all Black People and people of color should be released from the many jails and prisons because they have not received a fair and impartial trial. ‘Released’ means ‘released’ to the lawful authorities of the Black Nation."

Is this the kind of attitude we want in the White House?

Strange ain't it, whem a Clinton campaign office is destryed by fire, the Obama supporters start yelling "what is she hiding", even when it would make no sense for her people to destroy one of her offices. Brain dead Obama supporters are the only one's who could benefit by the elimination of a campaign office, but they really can't be that stupid. Clinton leads in the Indiana polls Speaking of polls, CNN closed off comments on the poll article yesterday after about only one hour. I was unable to get in with these numbers, so I will quote them here. Three (3) no name polls show's Clinton in the lead in Pennsylvania by 4% point, but when you google state polls, you find name "name" polls as follows" Survey U.S.A. Clinton by 56 to 38added 4/9,Quinnipiac Clinton 50 to 44% added 4/9 and Insider Advanatage at Clinton 48 to 38% added 4/1-When you average this "poll of polls", you get 51.3 to 40, which is little over 11% and the same as it was last week.

"Liar, liar office on fire"?

Yet another episode in the tragic comedy that would be another run of Clintons in the White House. I hope the firefighters/investigators are as truthful with her about the cause of the blaze as she has been with voters.

This looks a lot like INSURANCE FRAUD!!!! Then again it could be another Hill-Billy Diversion!!!

JBilly from Fl   April 11th, 2008 10:08 am ET

Do you Obama supporters know how ridiculous you sound? It just
goes to show the mentality of the people that are going to vote for
him. The Clinton campaign never , and I said NEVER made any
comments that Obama or his campaign had anything to do with this.

I think you all need to get jobs, go back to school and get your high
school diploma, get off food stams and welfare, stop selling drugs
and stop robbing 7-11 stores and gas stations.

Talimee   April 11th, 2008 10:09 am ET

You Obama supporters should be ashamed of yourselves!!! It could have been an accident or anything else. Stop blaming Clinton for everything! This is why the more I hear you guys the more I lean to McCain if Obama is the nominee. You guys are horrible.

There goes the neighborhood if Obama keeps brainwashing America enough to elect him as the next president.

An Agnostic Democrat   April 11th, 2008 10:10 am ET

I can already hear Hillary's campaign and all her supporters blaming Obama for this. It will likely be up in a new radio or T.V. ad soon. That would be after she pays her bills.
