Sen. Evan Bayh looks on as Sen. Clinton greets supporters in Valparaiso, Indiana.

VALPARAISO, Indiana (CNN) — Hillary Clinton appealed to Second Amendment supporters on Saturday by hinting that she has some experience of her own pulling triggers.

“I disagree with Sen. Obama’s assertion that people in our country cling to guns and have certain attitudes about trade and immigration simply out of frustration,” she began, referring to the Obama comments on small-town Americans that set off a political tumult on Friday.

She then introduced a fond memory from her youth.

“You know, my dad took me out behind the cottage that my grandfather built on a little lake called Lake Winola outside of Scranton and taught me how to shoot when I was a little girl,” she said.

“You know, some people now continue to teach their children and their grandchildren. It’s part of culture. It’s part of a way of life. People enjoy hunting and shooting because it’s an important part of who they are. Not because they are bitter.”

Minutes later, in a slightly awkward moment, Clinton faced a question from a woman in the audience whose son had been paralyzed by a gunshot. The woman asked Clinton what she would do about gun control as president.

Clinton touted her husband's record on gun control during his administration, and said "there is not a contradiction between protecting Second Amendment rights" and the effort to reduce crime.

Noting that many hunters and gun collectors want to keep weapons out of the hands of criminals, Clinton referred to her positive childhood experiences with firearms.

"As I told you, my dad taught me how to shoot behind our cottage,” she said. “I have gone hunting. I am not a hunter. But I have gone hunting."

Clinton said she has hunted ducks.

Clinton is twisting Obama's words…most people won't buy it. If
Obama wanted to he could "crawl" down in the gutter with her
and sling plenty of mud at her. She might as well give up…either
now or later…it doesn't matter…she is done….

Alice   April 12th, 2008 7:08 pm ET

I long for the day that this woman realizes her dream is over. There will be no coronation, Hillary. Many of us are just so sick of your pandering and lying about your "experience".

To the good people of Indiana…. The homestate of my lovely wife, Go jump in your cars. Ride around your county, Look at the plants, factorys, the jobs that no longer exsist. The jobs that used to be your's, mine, They are gone over seas to other countrys. Countrys that make the same products that we the american people used to make an income here at home… AMERICA!!!

The same products that we had, no doubt that if our children play with these toys we didn't have to wrorry if our child is going to get lead piosioning? The same products that we never had to think about, is this dog food going to kill my pets?….

The very same thing that was american made and american approved…. GONE!!! Gone because of politicians, Politicians such as the Clintons. Politicians that can deposit 800,000 tax payers out sourced jobs into a joint account. Polticians that can then turn around and in the same breath tell the amerian people that I/Hillary don't approve of my husbands NAFTA.

Then sit down and think to yourselfs a while…. Do I really want more of having nothing? No jobs? More NFATA?

It's up to us Indiana, Pennsylvania, North Carolina. It's up to all thoses states that were told that you don't matter. It's up to all the americans that feel like they have been lied to. It's up to,

"WE THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA"

I hope Obama doesn't choose Hillary as his VP because if she likes guns, he'd have to be careful around her. Lord protect him.

G from the ATL   April 12th, 2008 7:09 pm ET

Just like the guns she used defending troops against Bosnian sniper fire.

Michael   April 12th, 2008 7:09 pm ET

I figured the mainstream media would figure out a way to spin this so it is Clinton's fault that Obama said PA small townsmen are "bitter". Doesn't suprise the least. All she was saying is that guns are a past time for some people. That doesn't mean she can't support strengthing gun laws. She supports the 2nd Ammendment but also supports strengthing gun laws. Sounds smart to me. I'm sure people will continue the spin though. Between this bitter comment and the Jeremiah Wright contreversy Obama has NO CHANCE against McCain come November.

GO HILLARY 08

Dina   April 12th, 2008 7:10 pm ET

You have GOT to be kidding me right?????? P-A-N-D-E-R. All she does is say what people WANT to hear instead of what she really feels. What does this woman stand for? Seriously, what? She's so opportunistic and disingenuous. It's scary.

Observer   April 12th, 2008 7:10 pm ET

Good grief Hillary, another far-fetched anecdote! Next, you will tell us you had to dodge sniper fire out behind you dad's cottage. I believe you would tell us anything whatsoever to get elected.
Hillary, maybe you and Obama need to have a skeet contest to see who has the best marksmanship. You already failed to even up the bowling score, so this contest would likely be a comedy as well. I'll stay far away.

Bajanluv, Newport Newss   April 12th, 2008 7:10 pm ET

Now Obama is sorry again, the man is such a fraud. He and his wife know nothing about the average American. To them, we are just "typical" white people. They seem to have a deep disdain for us, and the politics of hope and change seem to be pretty shallow!

Walt, Belton,TX   April 12th, 2008 7:12 pm ET

Just one more trip down a fake memory lane……………………

I do love Hillary's new campaign slogan though: "Just tell me what you want to hear!"

Bren   April 12th, 2008 7:12 pm ET

You know, Hillary, you're a liar. And, you know, you wouldn't know the truth if it hit you upside the head. Furthermore, you know, people ARE bitter over many things having to do with politics…

…like, you know, people who make hundreds of thousands of dollars covertly and overtly supporting one thing while, you know, declaring publically that they don't.

Which is why, you know, you're on my last freakin' nerve.

Riteaidbob   April 12th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

Why do I have this feeling deep in my belly that a week from now we will learn that this too is a BIG FAT LIE? I don't believe a word that comes out of this womens mouth.

Behind the barn gun shooting my butt. Does she have plans to dress up in camo and "get me one of them there huntin' lic."?

jab   April 12th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

What? I know how to shoot a gun but that doesn't make me qualified to be president? And I've never been priviledged to have a second home by the shore.

Ifeanyi Azubike Houston Texas   April 12th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

Is this another fib. She has the propensity to manufacture stories. Also, if she misspoke about Bosnia, isn't it ok to accept that Obama to can misspeak. what is good for the goose…….

Our American Right   April 12th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

Firearms are a part of American culture and will always be. Obama's comment that Americans "cling" to their guns, was insulting to patriots; whose forefathers fought and died to protect our Right to Bear Arms.

jlu2thdr   April 12th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

Hillry would twist and spin breakfast cereral if she found out Obama did not like it.

It is a sad state of elections nowadays when you have teams of people perusing the other candidates every utterance for ammunition (no pun intended).

Hillary has been all about dragging down Obama for weeks now rather than touting her own qualifications…because every time she does, out pops a "fabrication"

Bills says "They act like she robbed a bank" when Hillary flubs, but full disclosure of character when Obama mispeaks.

Mark   April 12th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

It's time to end this perfect storm of stupidity and elect obama.

SueB   April 12th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

Well, Hillary, it's a good thing you know how to fire a gun. Next time you're in Bosnia with all those snipers, that could come in handy for you.
In the meantime, you know that's not what Obama said. He said that when people feel helpless because their government has let them down, they turn to those things they can count on. Religion, family, friends, community. When people feel helpless, they fight for their rights. Guns are a tradition that go back to our pre-revolutionary days and people want to preserve their right to bear arms. When their jobs are outsourced to India and China (Thanks for that, by the way, Bill and Hillary), they may just not want immigrants to come into their communities to compete for the jobs that are left. Americans are not stupid, Hillary, we see through your attempts to hi-jack this nomination. It won't work. Go Obama!!!!!

Stacey   April 12th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

What a liar! I don't believe a word she says. Hillary says whatever her supporters want to hear. She'll do and say anything to win.

adrienne   April 12th, 2008 7:14 pm ET

I don't think a winner is someone who merits themselves and only chance at winning is if their opponent makes a mistake, especially after Hillary Clinton made several, one after another.

"Keeping it real"   April 12th, 2008 7:14 pm ET

Everybody that gave a dime to the Clinton xampaign just wasted their money. What, did you think she could manufacture delegate votes out of the thin air or something? Yeh right! Just like she and all of her fellow cronies in Washington have manufactured you a bunch well paying jobs. Is this real? Can people really be this blind? Obama was right. With the lack of upward mobility, people will cling to their guns. Guess what? No one is challenging your right to own a gun. By N.C. I would be willing to bet that with all those guns out there… no wait, I pray that doesn't happen. This country wouldn't survive another 1968.

Abraham Garcia   April 12th, 2008 7:14 pm ET

What a load, I can smell it from here… She is losing and now grasping at anything in an effort to garner more votes. She has always been anti-gun, almost to the point of paranoia. If she want to show how much she loves hunting, lets see her in the field shooting something. Just don't let Bill go with her, at this point we may have a Cheny re-enactment…

JOLO of Houston   April 12th, 2008 7:15 pm ET

Rafeeq O. McGiveron   April 12th, 2008 7:17 pm ET

How astoundingly disingenuous Hillary is when trying to soft-pedal her elitist disdain, if not downright suspicion and hatred, of law-abiding American gun culture! Clinton's criticism of Obama's remark about "bitter" gun-owners "cling[ing]" to the topic of gun rights is of course right on the mark. For Hillary to paint herself as somehow more of a down-home, gun-lovin' good ol' boy than her opponent, however, is absurd to the point of offending our intelligence. Hillary rarely met a gun-control law she didn't like, and in my book, that means she doesn't respect the Constitution, doesn't understand the gun culture, and doesn't trust the American public with their God-given rights. Please, Hillary–you can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can't fool gun-owners with such pandering drivel.

Will we see her in October in a blaze orange suit belly crawling through the mud hunting squirrels?

Mark Billingsley, Sacramento, Calif.   April 12th, 2008 7:19 pm ET

If Hillary has so much experience with guns, why didn't she hunt down those snipers in the hills of Bosnia when she visited with Chelsea, Sinbad and Sheryl Crow? What a pandering fool she is…once again she twists Obama's words and takes them completely out of context. Unlucky for her that outright lies about Bosnian snipers don't have much context to twist and distort. Either she had to run for cover after landing or she didn't. SHE DIDN'T!

Lisa Roos   April 12th, 2008 7:19 pm ET

God, she is going to run this "bitter" thing into the ground just to win PA, like she did with the 3am ad to win Texas. The sad thing is that it is all just bs. Obama's use of the word "bitter" was correct; Americans ARE BITTER and for good reason. The word isn't demeaning, it is an accurate way to describe the anger and frustration people feel when their country has forgotten about them.

Sad that Clinton can twist Obama's words and there are actually people who fall for it.

Let's try this in smaller sections–less confusing that way…
Part One:

I realize that there are some well-educated, open-minded, gun-toting, religious citizens out there. SOME. Most citizens fit into only two or three of those categories. People are either enlightened or not. The wealthy can afford enlightenment (college, etc.); the poor that cannot escape the cycle of poverty created by wealthy republicans can only cling to hope–the one hope to which the poor have clung since almost the beginning–religion. Throughout history and at this very moment, more people have been killed for religion than for any other reason.

Leano   April 12th, 2008 7:25 pm ET

The problem with Clintonian politics is that it is opportunistic, therefore it gets carried away by the wind. Obama politics is visionary hence, he does not have to overstrategize, and be like the wave of the sea tossed about without foci. That is why he's not said anything about the Bosnia thing, because that is not what he's about. For this reason we say that Clinyon says almost anything to win.

Sue   April 12th, 2008 7:25 pm ET

I used to think Clinton would be the best choice for President. Then I watched her deliver gaffs that became harder and harder to swallow. She says we need change - but she is Washington. She opposes NAFTA, yet she has benefitted from her husband's 800K for promoting it in Columbia. She has parsed every word Obama speaks, especially when he utters the truth we all know - and comes back today to say that everything is suddenly glorious (what happened to the tanking economy? Did we miss something?). Has she lost her home to foreclosure lately? Has she lost her job to NAFTA? Has she had to tell her kids that they can't buy new shoes because funds are low? If she had, wouldn't she be bitter? I am sick of these games she plays. If we cannot speak the truth about issues, and sugarcoat them to get elected, then who will fight for us?

Realistic   April 12th, 2008 7:25 pm ET

Dean - Colton, CA   April 12th, 2008 7:26 pm ET

The President's attitude towards guns has nothing at all to do with anything. The Second Amendment gives us the right, and it matters not whether the President disagrees or not. Remember - the President is the head of the Executive Branch… the branch that enforces the laws, not make them.

This is just another one of those annoying attempts to appeal to people on a non-issue. Tell us what you will do to deal with the economy, the environment, immigration, health care, international trade, etc. Views on religion, guns, etc. are more or less unimportant… unless, of course, you agree with Obama that people turn to these issues because they believe politicians won't deal with the real important ones.

So which is it Hillary?

Ken, LA California   April 12th, 2008 7:26 pm ET

I would rather have a job than a gun, that is what Obama meant, no one is taking away the second amendment, if people in PA would rather vote for guns thans jobs so be it.

Vote the Clintons for third term please , so they can get to "work" for the American people. A couple of more millions from dubious businessmen and "supporters" would not hurt.

Being able to twist someone's remarks is certainly slick. Slick is not a character trait that is synonymous with trust Hillary. When you sleep with a slick woman you should hide your wallet..

Kyle in San Diego   April 12th, 2008 7:29 pm ET

Wow, the pandering just DOES NOT stop. I really think the Hillary campaign has resorted to sitting around the television screen, picking out parts of Obama's speeches that they feel they can twist and use to trip him up, while attempting to pander to that particular group of people he makes reference to. It's become so sad and obvious that she's reactive versus being proactive in her campaign.

Not to mention that it's very difficult for me to believe anything that comes out her mouth. Let's see if there's some fact checking in regards to this behind-the-cottage shooting, lol. Or maybe, Ellen can bring Hillary on her show to teach the audience how to shoot. ((ridiculous))

She is incapable of organizing her campaign staff. She is bluffing about her experience wow, this is funny to me because I've not seen anything good out of her 36 years in the Government other than being the bossy woman in her home with her little dog(Bill). She should give us a break, no wonder why someone called her a monster actually in upper cases MONSTER.

Are you kidding me?   April 12th, 2008 7:29 pm ET

Jane   April 12th, 2008 7:30 pm ET

Does this mean that Clinton supporters are a bunch of bobbleheads? I guess at least Indiana they are.

kris   April 12th, 2008 7:30 pm ET

shame on you hillary..you should just declare yourself as a republican now

Bri   April 12th, 2008 7:30 pm ET

Huh? Where was she going with that last statement. I guess that woman's question got her flustered.

Bitter???????   April 12th, 2008 7:30 pm ET

Perhaps Obama's experience with guns and church have been more on the negative side, he after all has only belonged to Rev Wright's church, so I can see why bitter would come into his mind when talking about religion. He has only lived in Chicago, so I can also see why only negative things come to his mind when he thinks of guns.

But the rest of us, we are not Chicago and our church's are not like Rev Wrights.

Latina Here   April 12th, 2008 7:30 pm ET

Go Hillary your our Girl!

Goldie   April 12th, 2008 7:31 pm ET

That is not what Obama said. Clinton is twisting this. Obama believes in Second Amendment rights. There is no difference between the two on this issue. Obama was saying that the issue of guns or gay marriage or immigration becomes the issue that people vote on when they don't believe the government will do anything about the economy. That is what I heard. That is how the Republicans have won on for a long time, by people voting on other things than the economy and if Clinton doesn't understand this well, she won't be a good candidate against McCain. And frankly, Clinton doesn't seem to see anyone but optimistic people even when they have been left behind by the economy. That's who she saw in Pennsylvania, the upbeat ones. No upset people need bother her.

Tito Valentino   April 12th, 2008 7:31 pm ET

of course we know your experience with guns in Bosnia. Wonder why you didnt use your trained skills to take out all the snipers before they started shooting. Liar. America will surely be the laughing stock of the world if they vote you to power.

Patricia   April 12th, 2008 7:31 pm ET

Why do I find this amusing?

Patty   April 12th, 2008 7:31 pm ET

Well, isn't that just dandy!

Dee   April 12th, 2008 7:31 pm ET

She always says "You know…" right before she says something that is supposed to "connect" with the people.

I bet most people wouldn't relate to her wealthy upbringing.

She created a scandal out of one irrelevant comment by someone who actually understands what people are going through…typical manipulation by her.

And Obama is on the defensive because he refuses to harp on every little stupid "miss-speak" she makes, as they all do, on a daily basis.

ron   April 12th, 2008 7:31 pm ET

Is she tired and misspeaking again? Her experiance as I see it is allways hind site.
Supported NAFTA, now want out
Supported Iraq ,now wants out
Whitewater, now wants to crack down on lenders
Corperate lawyer, now wants to work for the common man
Solicalist healthcare, Given 8 years didn't get it done

Dee   April 12th, 2008 7:32 pm ET

You have to be really obnoxious to frame someone raised by a poor single mom as "out of touch" with what real people face, especially when you yourself were brought up with more money than you know what to do with.

FreshFlavor   April 12th, 2008 7:32 pm ET

Should have stayed behind the barn.

Rod   April 12th, 2008 7:32 pm ET

Gumby Clinton. Flexible on all issues. Last month, she was an insomniac who answers calls at 3 AM. Last week, she was a revisionist historian. Today, she is a gun-toting southern mama. What's tomorrow? McCain in '08 groupie? It's time for a change.

John from Las Vegas   April 12th, 2008 7:33 pm ET

With all her experience with guns I hope she accurately shoots herself in the foot. Again.

OBAMA '08

Mimi in TX   April 12th, 2008 7:33 pm ET

I was an Obama supporter but now I am changing my vote! I am changing my vote to Hillary Clinton because she is in touch with the American people. Just like Hillary most Americans grew up with a summer vacation home with no heat and no working water (why would you need heat in the summer?). Most Americans make 109 million dollars in 6 years and most Americans will tell a bold faced lie and say they "mispoke".

Yes! I am changing my vote to Hillary Clinton because unlike Obama she understands how Americans need great healthcare EXCEPT her campaign staff who apparently doesn't need it as much because she didn't pay their healthcare bill.

Hillary is so in touch with the American people that she fought for us America! Yes she did and Bill Clinton too! They fought for us right after they cashed their 800,000 check from the Columbian trade deal. Hillary is so right! We need a president who will stand up for us just like she did as senator for the people of New York. She promised 200,000+ jobs in New York and I think the media is unfair for attacking her when they said she didn't keep her word and New York lost 30,000+ jobs!

Come on America! Hillary understands the struggles that us little folk are going through—SHE UNDERSTANDS JUST AS LONG AS IT'S NOT HER GOING THROUGH IT.

Seriously, my vote is for Obama! I 'd take his straight talk anyday over a compulsive liar and a warmonger.

Hillary the Chameleon   April 12th, 2008 7:33 pm ET

So she went from incumbent, to teary eyed in New Hampshire, to protective mom in Ohio, to underdog, to being unfairly criticized by the media (whiner), to brave first lady ducking enemy fire in Bosnia and now she is a gun toting rural raised girl. How about we call her what she really is, a LIAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Someone that instantly morphs into whatever the situation calls for at the time. Too bad she underestimates the intelligence of the citizens this time.

Pete, NC   April 12th, 2008 7:33 pm ET

Here she goes again trying to twist a story in her favor. Sen. Obama is a Constitutional lawyer who taught at Harvard School of Law. Anyone can pull a trigger, but can you fellow the law, the Constitution that is. Hillary needs to clean her own house of conflict of interest of NATFA/CATFA. That's what matter to America were are our jobs and were they might go. Wake up Hillary!

Larry, Bellevue WA   April 12th, 2008 7:34 pm ET

Oh great, she's 100% behind the second ammendment but willing to co-sponsor a constitutional amendment limiting the first. Why not just join the Republican Party and call it a day?

Hal   April 12th, 2008 7:34 pm ET

A funny thing now starts to happen when I hear or see HRC anywhere … I think of BUSH !!!! Bush ?!? My god what has she done to herself ?! Like when dubia open his mouth, like a REFLEXE , I start deciphering for lies, pandering and venom. This is someone I was rooting for 3 months ago. Now I can barelystand her sight , less her voice. Its to a point where IF she ever were to win by some sort of fatal miracle, I'd vote for NADER . Nader !!! I don't even know the guy. I mean aside from the fact that he comes somewhere between Obama and McCain.

Jared   April 12th, 2008 7:34 pm ET

Does she have little story like that for every situation? How many inaccuracies are going to come out in this one? At least she didn't claim she was under sniper fire while hunting.

Frazier   April 12th, 2008 7:34 pm ET

BooWoo Hillary,

Why don't you remind us of your bosnia trip again. I love to here dramatic stories.

kathleen retired Professional w/woman for obama   April 12th, 2008 7:35 pm ET

When I was a little girl Behind the "cottage", built on a little lake, called Lake Winona, outside of Scranton, my father taught me how to shoot a gun. Is there anything that Hillary has not done? Or were
they really that wealthy? Hillary is an elitist!!!!!!

Charlie   April 12th, 2008 7:35 pm ET

She will say and do anything.

Humm...   April 12th, 2008 7:35 pm ET

Humm…I wonder if she could be lying again like she usually does. Bending the truth for her own gains. Seems like a reoccurring theme in her campaign.

Obama '08!

Jim   April 12th, 2008 7:35 pm ET

Obama should have been careful with his words, but it would be a sad sad state of affairs if THIS is what my fellow citizens use to decide to vote for Hill-Billy or McCain.

This is not a lie, the way Clintons lie repeatedly.

McCain has no business talking about elitism, he of the 100-million-dollar wife and 8 houses in his possession.

@americans   April 12th, 2008 7:35 pm ET

Ok, Billary that's ENOUGH!

Your attitude of know-it-all just irks me. Please STOP!!!!

look byond   April 12th, 2008 7:35 pm ET

You can tell, from her looks that we got one desperate woman trying to cook any thing.
Please , Hilary the food is almost ready.
Did you forget "The drop out" ingredience.

Your $109 million dollar is still not enough.
HOW GREEDY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bryant   April 12th, 2008 7:35 pm ET

Are you serious? Clinton is now touting her "gun" experience? Does that include the sniper rifles in Bosnia?

Hillary is whatever you want her to be…if you're poor, she knows what it's like to be poor (never mind that $109 million). If you're from Pennsylvania, she'll tout her great childhood memories of Pennsylvania (even though she grew up in another state.) What would you like her to tell you today, people? Hillary will tell you EXACTLY what you want to hear.

People aren't falling for this anymore, are they? Or are they?

Scott   April 12th, 2008 7:35 pm ET

lol, this is merely a triangulated message to Bill…lol

Zachra   April 12th, 2008 7:36 pm ET

She can vividly remember that old yarn, but not something that happened a little over ten years ago? How am I supposed to believe that? It sounds like her speechwriters were listening to A Prairie Home Companion when they wrote that.

ICHOPE   April 12th, 2008 7:36 pm ET

“You know, my dad took me out behind the cottage that my grandfather built on a little lake called Lake Winola outside of Scranton and taught be how to shoot when I was a little girl,” she said.

James   April 12th, 2008 7:37 pm ET

Look at me, Pennsylvania! I make $10 million per year and have a hyper-educated elitist family, but I used to shoot guns in Scranton. I'm really one of you!

Unemployed and bitter   April 12th, 2008 7:37 pm ET

There she goes again… this time she's the sniper.

Jim   April 12th, 2008 7:37 pm ET

Hillary:

YOU DON'T KNOW GUNS. Stop pandering to the press.

You thought that Bosnian girl's poetry reading was SNIPER FIRES.

YOU DON'T KNOW GUNS.

Lee   April 12th, 2008 7:38 pm ET

What's this new piece of fiction about Hillary Clinton's love for guns?

If she was such a good shot, it's surprised that she didn't pull out a weapon and start shooting back when all the bullets were whizzing around in Bosnia.

Seriously, she seems willing to say just about anything these days if she thinks it'll help her campaign. These are evidently desperate times.

citizenwells   April 12th, 2008 7:38 pm ET

Obama missed a vote in Dec 1999 in the Illinois Senate on gun control.

david Brickner   April 12th, 2008 7:38 pm ET

This is the sickest thing that i have seen in a long time!!Hillary Clinton on the Second Amendment. She is a co-Senator with Charles Schumer, the most anti-gun person in the Senate. Could this campaign get any goofier!!? What's next?? Bill entering the priesthood????

Kyle Indianapolis, Indiana   April 12th, 2008 7:38 pm ET

she lies! I bet she's thinking about some sniper fire or something again! McCain and Clinton are not fit to be president!

Jonze   April 12th, 2008 7:38 pm ET

Hillary Clinton is so disingenuous. She is completely misrepresenting what Barack Obama said. Her description if what he said compared to what he actually said is like her description of landing in Tuzla under sniperfire and what it was really like landing in Tuzla.

Also worth noting that Hillary Clinton was anti-gun when it was politically expedient back in 1999 when she was running for the Senate in NY. She blasted the gun lobby then and now she's painting herself as some sort of gun lover.

She'll say whatever it takes to get elected.

Mary   April 12th, 2008 7:38 pm ET

She alsp hunts down ( and shoots) her political opponents!

Hillary has serious issues   April 12th, 2008 7:39 pm ET

Evan Bayh is questioning Obama about "bitter" remark, saying SuperDelegates need to 'consider' that, yet not Hillary over NAFTA, Bosnia, Healthcare stories, and her LIES? Where is the common standard when Obama gets hammered on symantics and Hillary lies (repeatedly). Bayh's a centritst who, 40 years ago, would have been a Goldwater Republican like Hillary. Why does the media give more time to these stories than Hillary's numerous fallacies?

John   April 12th, 2008 7:39 pm ET

No, we really are bitter and guns and church really do help in dealing with our frustration with the poor leadership in government. I wish I could believe you Hillary. First you were shot at and now you're doing the shooting. What next–you were born a poor black child?

JerDawg   April 12th, 2008 7:39 pm ET

Billary, you are old news, and old politics, old status quo, you dont remember to tell everyone that your family are republicnas and remember a republican is always a republican no matter what you say now or do later..

blah blah blah

McCain or Obama

Genevieve   April 12th, 2008 7:40 pm ET

Obama's views are actually shared by many people around the world, especially Europeans. Gun culture and bible-thumping are regularly singled-out as salient examples of the 'red neck' culture and general backwardness of small-town America. Obama would like to culturally 'convert' small-town America. As for Hillary, I think she would like to do so too, but she is not as stupid or politically naive as Obama. On the other hand, she has a tendency to over-empathize with voters… this bit about 'I know about guns' won't really help her… it just makes one think about what she said about sniper fire.

ICHOPE   April 12th, 2008 7:40 pm ET

“You know, some people now continue to teach their children and their grandchildren. It’s part of culture. It’s part of a way of life. People enjoy hunting and shooting because it’s an important part of who they are. Not because they are bitter.”

But Hilliary, do you think that's how the killing on college campus happen, People hunting for food is ok, but shooting…shooting at what?

When will it all End   April 12th, 2008 7:41 pm ET

In essence the fight is all about being the first to make the statement. Obama was not wrong. He was absolutely right.
Catch Up is monsterrous.

Eric   April 12th, 2008 7:41 pm ET

This is too funny. Hillary is like that person who always a a story for every topic of discussion, out doing anyone within an earshot's radius. I also find it funny how easily she she can blame failures on everyone or everything except the source(who or what could that be). Is she auditioning for a play or running for President of the United States of America?

Will in CA,   April 12th, 2008 7:42 pm ET

Bet the lessons came in real handy when you had to dodge that sniper.

Jared in WA   April 12th, 2008 7:42 pm ET

Can someone fact check this, please? Hillary's been known to make up stories before. Did her grandfather really build a cottage? Is there really a Lake Winola outside of Scranton? Has she ever actually fired a gun? Does she really have a father?

Kate, Atlanta   April 12th, 2008 7:43 pm ET

Hey, let's wait until the actual film footage comes out to show this never happened, she was really just picking flowers.

BJ Mulder   April 12th, 2008 7:43 pm ET

Clinton and McCain have just been waiting for this. To bad they can't win without nagativity. They will now try to continue this until the april 22nd primary. I just hope that all people realize the good in Obama and rise above this petty stuf. I will continue to be faithful to Obama because I believe he is the one to be our next president. I also believe he ia an honest man and Clinton has been caught in her own lies. I hope this back fires on her. I don't believe McCain has the strength to become a president.

Susan Donovan   April 12th, 2008 7:43 pm ET

Pander pander pander pander…

such a liar   April 12th, 2008 7:43 pm ET

Sure you do Hillary. Just like when you said you were dodging sniper fire in Bosnia. Just like when you said you tried to join the Marines. The Marine would have never turned down a lawyer!!! What a joke. If you knew how to fire a gun, you would have taken aim at Bill's crotch a long time ago and saved Monica's blue dress a trip to the laundramat Get a life, liar.

Oh, and did you tell them how you are recommending a Congressional which will be the largest anti-gun bill in history? She is so good at talking out of both sides of her Columbia supporting mouth.

Lenore Z.   April 12th, 2008 7:44 pm ET

These remarks of Senator Clinton are the clearest example of what is meant by the word "pandering" that I think I've ever seen. We've never before heard stories of her experience with guns. Why now? To capitalize on her opponent's fumble and pander to the audience.

jim   April 12th, 2008 7:44 pm ET

To dam bad she didnt shoot herself— She nothing but a biggot.
A liar and insenative to the people of United States of America.
I never in my life ever have known of anyone who can tell so many lies and keep a half straight face……….

Evan   April 12th, 2008 7:44 pm ET

HILLARY ClINTON calling Obama elitist?

That is SO RICH!!! 108 million dollars, all charitable donations to her OWN FOUNDATION. Oh yeah, she's the one who is "in touch" with everyone.

Tell me, Hillary, if you were so in touch with America - then why are you blind as to not see these are kind of politics WE WANT TO STOP! People are DISGUSTED with your dirty tricks and lies.

You're a HYPOCRITE, Hillary. A huge hypocrite.

John Hoff   April 12th, 2008 7:45 pm ET

Yet another reason I'd vote for Hillary, or I'd vote for John McCain (reluctantly) but I'd never vote for Obama. He lacks the broad life experience of Clinton. His outlook is completely urban. Hillary understands small towns through her husband, even if she didn't grow up in them herself.

Obama is dismissive of small towns, the backbone of America. This one single remark is capable of destroying his whole campaign.

Monroe   April 12th, 2008 7:45 pm ET

People are just not getting it. Obama did not say anything like "people only believe in God because they are bitter about economics." That's crazy! His claim was that when people feel that government cannot do anything to improve their economic situation, they vote solely on controversial issues that politicians use as "wedges" to divide and conquer. He is trying to say that it is possible to effect change on issues of common interest to working people that far overshadow the wedge issues. This is what he's been saying all along: that it is time to come together to reclaim the American dream rather than continue to bickering and scapegoating.

Tom, AZ   April 12th, 2008 7:45 pm ET

Well said Pete, Obama said when people are frustated and bitter about government, Politician will use guns and religion like a wedge to sway away from what really matter to small town America, and Hillary fell right in this trap. Way to go Obama!!!!

A change is Coming!!!!

Ann Marie   April 12th, 2008 7:45 pm ET

Why do so many Americans have a need to shoot a gun? Even hunting for pleasure is questionable. Hunting should only be done for the purpose of food. Shooting animals for no reason in my opinion is wrong. America is gun happy and so is Hillary. I knew she was a Republican at heart. No wonder she and trigger happy McCain are working together against Obama. WOW
Pennsylvania for Obama

BJ Mulder   April 12th, 2008 7:45 pm ET

That's about what she is!!!

theroadrunner   April 12th, 2008 7:45 pm ET

Well, great combat hero, dodging sniper fire and throwing grenades in Korea, S. Vietnam, and Bosnia that she is, I think we can all take a lesson or two in guns from the great know-it-all Hilliary. Is there anything she doesn't know?

A NY   April 12th, 2008 7:45 pm ET

I was so excited about this election. Was a big Hillary supporter! Frankly speaking I am disappointed with the manner in which the various campaigns are being runned, the negative attacks and the bias media coverage especially Fox and the Lou Dobbs show. I will not vote for Hillary…Neither will I vote for McCain. The jury is still out for Obama…not that I expect the DNC to give the nomination to him.

I would love to hear more about the Green Party and Nader.

Bill   April 12th, 2008 7:45 pm ET

This woman raises pandering to an art form. Obama spoke the truth even if it did come out wrong. Hill is trying to be for and against the interests of gun owners at the same time. Is she misleading gun owners? Or gun control supporters? Or both? Either way, she "misspeaks" like a rug.

Barbara L. Giles   April 12th, 2008 7:46 pm ET

I really do not see what the hoopla is all about. What Obama said was the truth. I do not believe what people will stoop to to defame person's character. Hillary is graspsing at straws that are simply wisps. I think that Hillary should take care of her husband's "flap." In addition, Hilliary's supposedly "death" trip to Bosnia seemed to be a joke to the media. At least Obama is being honest with you. Hillary is a pathological liar, and it has been proven. So who do we want as President of our great nation-someone who speaks the truth or a liar? Through history, I have learned that people do not want to hear the truth because they want to ease their GUILTY consciences.
And speaking about out of touch, I, along with some of my friends, always cry whenever we see Obama dancing on Ellen. This video shows that he is a person just like us. And this Elitism that people are talking about! Obama is no Elitist. Some people may think he is because of the strides that he has made, and maybe, just maybe, some people believe that only certain people should belong to the Elite group. I sense envy and prejudice here also. Think, before you cast your votes, Pennsylvanians. Do not be fooled by the wolf in sheep'sclothing. Do not fall victims to Hillary like the Ohians. OBAMA 2008!

Nana   April 12th, 2008 7:46 pm ET

Whatever Hillary! You are such a liar. You have been avoiding your own lies about Bosnia and your position on NAFTA after making over $800K on supporting free trade to Columbia. Now you have the nerve to attack Obama on these statements he made offering empathy to people who have lost jobs and who the government has turned its back on? It is unbelievable the "free ride" the media gives you and how they attack Obama on every issue. I would not vote for a liar like Hillary Clinton if she was the last person on earth. I will pray that people see through the negative press and vote for Obama for President. He is the only who truly cares about the people in this country.

Zoe   April 12th, 2008 7:46 pm ET

joe   April 12th, 2008 7:47 pm ET

Pathological liar!

Carl   April 12th, 2008 7:47 pm ET

I dont understand why Obama would say people cling on to guns through frustration it is stereo typing at its worst, its rediculous. Saunders has come out today and said Obamas got a lot of explaining to do and hes right you cant go around saying people without jobs are bitter, they are not bitter they have pride in who they are and want to work. Its that attitude and determination to want to work and knowing how much of an improvement the economy and employment status will be when Hillary is president that keeps them going.
This guy is making mistake after mistake, he is not fit to be President, I dread to think what mistakes he will make if he was to get to the White house which he wont. After all that has happened it would be insance if people still vote for him.

Nader was spot-on when he said that Clinton is a "panderer and flatterer."

And she needs to stop touting her husband's achievements. She won't accept his shortcomings yet is always willing to take up his achievements. Can't have it both ways.

As for hunting ducks (what kind of sicko hunts ducks??), she meant the old Nintendo game Duck Hunt, and she probably got really close to the TV and cheated.

FOR THE "UNEDUCATED BILLARY VOTERS": - hear is an explanation of Obama's speech:
People don't trust politicians when it comes to improving economic conditions. Therefore, they rely on their faith, their communities, and their rights (the 2nd Amendment) as opposed to voting on the issues that will enhance their economic conditions. The Republicans have exploited this through "wedge issues." Why do you think that marriage amendments, gun rights, and other amendments are attached to the vote in key states? It's done in order to distract voters from asking questions about what politicians will really do.

BUT, TRUST ME FOLKS - BILLARY WILL TRY TO SPIN MY HONEST AND EDUCATED TRUTH!!!

Oh my God, this is so sickening. She disagrees with everything and anything she can disagree with with Obama. She is such a pandering opportunist who pounces on any topic she can and twists it to relate to the normal person. Shooting guns by a lake in Scranton? God, can she be anymore polarizing?

Dem in the white house   April 12th, 2008 7:49 pm ET

You have GOT to be kidding me. I sure hope the good people of Pen. realize that Obama was telling the truth about people being left behind and felling frustrated and not be suckered by this spin. Anyone who buys that Clinton would be friendlier to guns than Obama is not doing their homework. Really folks, Senator Obama was talking about how because people have been left behind and don't feel they can trust the pol's they vote based on wege issues. It's NOT an insult it's knowing how people are feeling I know that most of my friends who fit the "mold" feel like that. I wish Obama would not only not back off this but start a campaign along the good ol line "yes were mad as hell, and were not going to take this any more!!!"

mc   April 12th, 2008 7:49 pm ET

How do we know if this story is even true Hillary? We know your history. She lies to the American people and brushes it off like it's nothing. Then wants to "Pounce" on Obama for making a TRUE statement. Come on People this is totally absurd!

Obama 08

Mike - Spring, TX   April 12th, 2008 7:49 pm ET

Too bad she didn't do a little target practice after the Monica story broke.

TINA   April 12th, 2008 7:49 pm ET

HILLARY YOU DO NOT HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE. THE ONLY EXPERIENCE YOU HAVE IS LIE ABOUT EVERYTHING AND YOU NEED TO GET OUT O F THE RACE.

Joyce   April 12th, 2008 7:49 pm ET

Has bobblehead Clinton misspoken, again?

Jean   April 12th, 2008 7:49 pm ET

If she knows so much about guns, Why did she think she was in SNIPER FIRE???

john   April 12th, 2008 7:49 pm ET

BE BITTER! Believe in God!

McCain 2008

What a wonderful bumper sticker.

What Obama said will come back to bite him hard.

i feel like picking up hunting...   April 12th, 2008 7:50 pm ET

I wish someone would shoot Hillary. She is a real lame duck.

Trollmaster CA   April 12th, 2008 7:50 pm ET

We know about her experience with sniper rifles. I don't believe this one either. She either never touched a gun in her life or did only once and dropped it on the recoil.

Mister Anderson   April 12th, 2008 7:50 pm ET

LoL - Any time a Democrat try to run on the "gun issue" it blows up in their face. Obama should let her own this issue and shoot up her campaign.

typical whte male   April 12th, 2008 7:51 pm ET

and she won't be afraid to use them when needed!

Hillary for Americans!

platy   April 12th, 2008 7:51 pm ET

She shot a gun under her grandfather's supervision at the family lake cottage. Now hunters are supposed to vote for her? I liked her better when she was dodging bullets in Bosnia.

Culture is trading deer recipes. Bitter is what we feel towards corporately owned and operated pols like the McClintons She doesn't have a clue.

Mom Dem   April 12th, 2008 7:51 pm ET

Freedom of speech…HA!

Obama is the man   April 12th, 2008 7:52 pm ET

Clinton may win a few more of the redneck vote but will hurt her with the college educated crowd.

Statistics show the people with college degrees are supporting Obama more so than Clinton or Mccain. Clinton and Mccain can stick to getting votes for the highschool drop out crowd.

skylark   April 12th, 2008 7:52 pm ET

OMG! She is a gun nut too!
Duck!
Once again she is taking Obamas words totally out of context and trying to be one of the good old boys.
What a crock!

Anthony Marshall   April 12th, 2008 7:53 pm ET

I live in a small town in Pa. I lost my job due to closing of facility. I am bitter but I continue to be happy. Obama was absolutely correct in what he said. The lady who put it on blog followed his bus, she felt so offended that she waited 5 days, on a friday time for people to dwell on it, and right after Bill Clinton's revisited Bosnia event. What a way to divert her Bosnia incident raised by Bill. What a spin put on it just like punishing daughter incident. What makes matter worse the media knows what he was saying, so does the people, this is what cause division amongt people

Kentucky Voter   April 12th, 2008 7:53 pm ET

“You know, my dad took me out behind the cottage that my grandfather built on a little lake called Lake Winola outside of Scranton and taught me how to shoot when I was a little girl”

She used these skills she learned from her father to fire back at the Bosnians that she was under sniper fire from. Using that gun she was able to defend the young pregnant woman that couldn't receive healthcare, and therefore saved the world from Lex Luthor and his evil corporation.

…and it's all true because Hillary Clinton says it is.

Hillary supporter   April 12th, 2008 7:53 pm ET

I too was taught to shoot and respect guns when I was growing up. I was taught they were not toys and how to carry and put them away safely and how to shoot safely and where and how not to shoot or point a gun. The people who use guns for the purpose to harm others will obtain them illegally if they want to do harm, so why take guns way from the law abiding citizens who just like to shoot for recreation or hunting? Also, Obama has a bad opinion of most of American , it appears to me, and I don't see how someone so bitter himself can possibly bring this country together! I think he either needs to sink or swim with his words, just like Hillary has too, I am sick and tired of hearing CNN take up for him. He doesn't have to watch what he says, because most of the media takes his side and give excuses, thats why I like to listen to Glenn Beck. I don't agree with him on everything , but when it comes to Obama , people need to listen!

carriejo   April 12th, 2008 7:54 pm ET

To bad she didn't have her gun when in Bosnia dodging all those bullets. It's so amusing that she can come up with long tales so quickly.

Greg   April 12th, 2008 7:54 pm ET

I think most gun owners are well aware of Clintons disdain of our military and gun owners. Her past actions speak louder than any words she can say now. She must really be desperate if she thinks this new tale is going to convince anybody to vote for her.

Val   April 12th, 2008 7:54 pm ET

OMG I can not Stand Hillary.

This is one white woman who will never vote for Hillary.

I don't want a liar for my president.

I agree   April 12th, 2008 7:55 pm ET

Still… that really was not the worst of the implications Obama made by his really dismissive statement.

What I gathered from it is that Obama thinks people who struggle to build a life for themselves in difficult financial times, tend to find
