Sen. Evan Bayh looks on as Sen. Clinton greets supporters in Valparaiso, Indiana.

VALPARAISO, Indiana (CNN) — Hillary Clinton appealed to Second Amendment supporters on Saturday by hinting that she has some experience of her own pulling triggers.

“I disagree with Sen. Obama’s assertion that people in our country cling to guns and have certain attitudes about trade and immigration simply out of frustration,” she began, referring to the Obama comments on small-town Americans that set off a political tumult on Friday.

She then introduced a fond memory from her youth.

“You know, my dad took me out behind the cottage that my grandfather built on a little lake called Lake Winola outside of Scranton and taught me how to shoot when I was a little girl,” she said.

“You know, some people now continue to teach their children and their grandchildren. It’s part of culture. It’s part of a way of life. People enjoy hunting and shooting because it’s an important part of who they are. Not because they are bitter.”

Minutes later, in a slightly awkward moment, Clinton faced a question from a woman in the audience whose son had been paralyzed by a gunshot. The woman asked Clinton what she would do about gun control as president.

Clinton touted her husband's record on gun control during his administration, and said "there is not a contradiction between protecting Second Amendment rights" and the effort to reduce crime.

Noting that many hunters and gun collectors want to keep weapons out of the hands of criminals, Clinton referred to her positive childhood experiences with firearms.

"As I told you, my dad taught me how to shoot behind our cottage,” she said. “I have gone hunting. I am not a hunter. But I have gone hunting."

Clinton said she has hunted ducks.

Clinton touts her experience with guns | politikly.com…

\r\nIn response to Obama saying people pick up guns because they are bitter, Clinton says people don…

KPO'M   April 12th, 2008 9:49 pm ET

Oh, great. So now Clinton's a "lifelong hunter." I wonder if she's a Phillies fan (except when she's a lifelong Pirates fan)?

James - Indiana   April 12th, 2008 9:48 pm ET

The more Hillary milks these situations for all they're worth, the more transparent and disingenuous she appears.

M. Mitch   April 12th, 2008 9:47 pm ET

Bill's record with gun control is not something to be proud of. At least not from the standpoint of a law abiding, gun owning citizen.

Besides… this is just another of Hillary's stories, to make her look human.

??   April 12th, 2008 9:47 pm ET

I have two questions: How old was she when her fahter was teaching how to shoot a gun? If she was under age, then a child abuse case can be raised. If she old eanough, my second question is did she havea license to carry when hunting with her father?
These questions need answers.
We can give the presidency to someone with reckless behavior. Safety and security is prime for US.

Sol   April 12th, 2008 9:46 pm ET

EXPERIENCE WITH GUN? Check her out!!! …….. She may be lying again.

mwito   April 12th, 2008 9:46 pm ET

the problem with all of us is we do not want to here the truth, here is the guy who is telling you the truth as it is you, get so offended, I think Obama should start telling lies like Clinton and we will listen more. Can somebody check how true her comenent is, if you want to know about Obama's coment check the minute man, and how people are divided that should tell you something, but all of you are in dinial, work up folks we have a long long way to go.

Jarrett, Augusta,GA   April 12th, 2008 9:46 pm ET

Yeah she knows about guns….Bosnia sniper fire!

Rich   April 12th, 2008 9:46 pm ET

Of course she does, she needed one to keep Bill in line.

Sandra Scholl   April 12th, 2008 9:44 pm ET

Senator Obama's words were EMPATHETIC, not demeaning as Senator Clinton would like one to believe. This is another ploy by Clinton to belittle Senator Obama to make herself look better. What she is doing to the Democratic party with her BS is very sad.
While I do agree that he could have used better words to express himself, people are bitter here in this neck of the woods (small town in Pa.)-especially because our government is so disfuntional and more interested in power and greed than solving our common problems. I strongly believe that Senator Obama is the best candidate for the awesome job awaiting the next president.

Kent D   April 12th, 2008 9:44 pm ET

And were you ducking sniper fire when you were learning how to shoot?

I'm bitter that this liar is still in the race and views herself legitimate.

Mike   April 12th, 2008 9:42 pm ET

Hillary, did you have to duck and run for cover to get back in the cottage?

Jerry in Florida   April 12th, 2008 9:42 pm ET

Finally! Senator Obama is showing his true colors. I guess now the typical white and Black voters may not be railroaded/pressured into supporting him. Chances are that the national media will again treat him with kid gloves. Stay tuned!

Richard   April 12th, 2008 9:42 pm ET

Is this more "phony" experience from Hillary? Kinda like that 35 years of experience thing or Bosnia trip?? Maybe she played with a toy gun.

marianna   April 12th, 2008 9:42 pm ET

Experience with guns and shooting? yeah, and with dodging sniper fire!

Carolyn   April 12th, 2008 9:41 pm ET

Hillary is so sad, we have people in this country loosing their homes and jobs, and she want to talk about guns. Go away billary.

Dave in Albuquerque   April 12th, 2008 9:41 pm ET

Is there anything Senator Clinton won't say?

Craig in Texas Democrat and supporter for Obama   April 12th, 2008 9:41 pm ET

My how they forget that it was the CLINTONS who were responsible for all those job losses and they now telling people YOU ARE NOT ANGRY AND FRUSTRATED OVER THOSE LOSSES. THEY TALKING TO YOU LIKE YOU ARE STUPID. 800,000.00NTHEY GOT FROM NAFTA THAT SENT YOUR JOBS OFF TO CANADA AND MEXICO. THEY SLEEP WITH DOGS IN WASHINGTON SUPPORTING THE COLUMBIAN FREE TRADE DEALS. I WOULD BE BITTER, ANGRY, MAD AND TELL THE CLINTONS TO GO TO HELL BY ENDING HER RACE IN PA.

MKM   April 12th, 2008 9:40 pm ET

Undoubtedly, another lie.

Brice   April 12th, 2008 9:40 pm ET

You know, I am ok with either Democrat being the president. However, when I see Barack Obama's gathering places, they are filled with people that describe America.. a melting pot. Clinton's just doesnt have as much variety.. and when it comes to McCain, my word.. just a bunch of old white people standing around looking like zombies while he reads his speech. I believe Barack can unite this country, its what we need. I also admire him because he doesn't play dirty politics. What is worse.. lying to the American people countless times? Or telling it like it is. Obama perhaps could have watched his tongue about the bitter people, but they really are bitter, I am one of them. He runs a good campaign, as where Clinton, runs a campaign that hands out stickers that take cheap shots at Obama. You don't see Obama handing out stickers saying.. I didn't steal money from Peter Paul, or I don't lie about sniper fire. Clinton runs a dirty campaign.. sure Ill vote for her if she wins the primary.. but Senator Clinton, I have no respect for you.

Ratgurl   April 12th, 2008 9:39 pm ET

I personally AM bitter, with Clinton & McCain & their "let them eat cake" attitudes. They perpetually pander to the voters they need support from, but they don't give them a second thought afterward. Witness the lack of speech after Clinton loses a particular state – not once has she thanked her supporters for their effort. As a result, many of her former supporters have regret & wish they could change their vote. Her behavior regarding the Clinton money machine (i.e. Columbian trade deal) and her constant twisting of Obama's commentary has really turned a lott of her supporters off. And McCain just follows suit, obviously attacking Obama (but not Hillary) because Obama is the REAL threat to the Republican party.

Let's bring this to a conclusion, PA. Let's get some transparency and accountability in government and get the crooked, rich moguls out for good! Vote Obama.

Dom   April 12th, 2008 9:38 pm ET

LOL, Barack slipped up. But Hillary is trying so hard to pounce on her wounded opponent that she might launch clean over him and land face first in a pile of mud.

Eli, Milwaukee   April 12th, 2008 9:38 pm ET

Oh my God!!
Here she goes again with some made up story about her and guns.
Do she ever stop? Next she will be saying how she disarmed a bankrobber because he was not using his gun legally.

It has become really obvious now that she would say ANYTHING to win votes.

Austen   April 12th, 2008 9:38 pm ET

Of course she knows about guns… she has to know how to defend herself when she comes under sniper fire in hostile Bosnian territories. Muahahaha!

But seriously, I'm sick of this "I'm not anti-gun. I've shot a gun before" BS.

Barbara L. Giles   April 12th, 2008 9:37 pm ET

I have noticed that a lot of my responses are not printed. Is someone afraid that my words might hurt because they are the truth?

Anonymous   April 12th, 2008 9:37 pm ET

Dont believe a word of this for a minute, she is 100% against the right to own guns.

Jeremy   April 12th, 2008 9:36 pm ET

Stop twisting Obama's words Hillary. People who live in cities and have lost their jobs don't hunt. And somebody look up if Lake Winola actually exists, she may be "misremembering" again.

carmen   April 12th, 2008 9:36 pm ET

You know, she forgot to say that she had the bible on the other hand the whole time. You know, she is a "bitter" woman herself who experienced the same hardships at the recreational cottage and man-made lake. You know, she has the same pains today as those people who lost their jobs through bad economic decisions with hundreds of millions of dollars to keeps track of. You know, I am waiting for her to say that she lost a child to the war she supported. You know, she is an unrependent, immoral, two-faced big pant suit liar. You know, when she says you know she is fibbing or for that matter any time she and her husband move their lips.

salin   April 12th, 2008 9:35 pm ET

I knew that Hillary will do anything for nomination. That is the reason she predicted more " Twist and Turns" in the democratic race.. She does not care about the Democratic Party, all she needs is nomination.

If Democrats lose the election in November, Hillary should the reason for this. Before republicans pick up the issue, she is the one to pick it up to cash for her nomination.
I always had respect for Bill Clinton. But the way Hillary is doing politics, it's a shame to every democrats, and each individual citizen.

Enough Hillary.. I will never vote you in my life..

Nathan in WA   April 12th, 2008 9:35 pm ET

Hillary is living in a PC fantasy world that is convenient to her campaign

Obama is just telling it like it is

Guns, Flag Burning, Religion issues – these are things bad politicians use to distract voters

yappy   April 12th, 2008 9:35 pm ET

jesus, why don't we just give it to her and go it over with ??….She can say whatever the &^^& she wants can't she ? i can't stand her and the way she jumps on anything to win. what she said about Bosnia was a FLAT out freaking lie and we let her slide. This Dem will NEVER vote for her… in fact, if we put yet another clinton in i am leaving this country. We don't deserve Obama….I hope you all love the war, high gas prices and BIG money politicians cuz that is what you are gonna get. thank God I live in Alaska… where I can still walk into the woods and disappear.

gp   April 12th, 2008 9:35 pm ET

yes , we can realy be proude of use of guns, (specialy exposing children ) as a culture!!!! I realy wish I live where people understand what culture is. This mentality lead as where we are – in Iraq and where we will stay with Hilary…maybe you who support her should be there, and wont be there, but I will probably look some other place to be if needed..somwhere where people belive that culture and education and PERSONAL INTEGRITY mater!!!! She speaks as is not for war but is for guns , she presents as if she is not for trade with Columbia but is for personal profit from that same trade, she is comander but doesnt bknow what her cheaf stuff is involved or even her housband…that is misery of caracter

Roger   April 12th, 2008 9:34 pm ET

OK, so you think you claim to know how to use a gun. You have already shown that you do not know what end it fires out of by you lie regarding one of your foreign diplomacy experiences. Or is this just another lie to draw attention from the fact that NAFTA and the loss of jobs all across America has the name Clinton all over it? Yes, many Americans are bitter, not only for having our jobs taken away from us by NAFTA but also for your denial of how we feel. You are so out of touch!

ron   April 12th, 2008 9:34 pm ET

This is so pathetic, especially on the heels of the Rovian attempt to smear Obama for his comments that anybody with a room temp IQ knows are true. What's his crime? Telling the truth?

silverspring   April 12th, 2008 9:34 pm ET

ALBO   April 12th, 2008 9:33 pm ET

MOST CERTAINLY SHE INVENTED THIS STORY ALSO, TO SUPPORT THE ATTACK ON OBAMA'S REMARK

"People enjoy hunting and shooting because it’s an important part of who they are"

Meaning putting guns in the hand of mentally thick orunstable and shooting innocent people and children ??

Hunting animals until extintion ?? To show she is an real American she stress that she has hunted, even if she is NOT a hunter??

IS THAT WHAT THE CONSTITUTION PROTECTS ?? Certianly not and
hopefully the Supreme Courtt will have the courage to clarify that !!

ALBO

Ed - Pa   April 12th, 2008 9:32 pm ET

I agree with Tom Hendrickson: “My message to Senator Obama is, we are not frustrated. We are not bitter. We turn to our faith because we believe. Amen. We hunt and fish because it's a part of our culture and we enjoy it. So, Senator Obama, don't pity us and think that we're bitter and frustrated. We're hard working family folks who are smart and we get it.

Go away Obama!

Brent   April 12th, 2008 9:32 pm ET

Hillary please. Your head is doing nothing but spinning. And I am sorry, i am not going to teach my child how to kill with a gun. I would rather teach my child how to heal.

But you do your best to take the word "bitter" and use it how you feel it is appropriate. Guess that is what bitter people do.?

Ted Wu, Los Angeles, CA   April 12th, 2008 9:31 pm ET

I don't believe in making enemies, even if they are NRA members. Like Sen. Clinton said, some of them are for guns because, unfortunately, they are taught or brought up that way. It's an unfortunate way of life and culture. However, it is also unfortunate that Sen.Clinton finds it necessary to bring this issue up this way to gain votes from the so called supporters of the misinterpreted 2nd Amendment. I totally understand that she is dealing with political reality, but it is still a very sad situation that she has to do so.

She is running with her twist on Obama's statement. Just more proof that she will say ANYTHING to get elected. Too funny!!

And a Hillary bobble head? Are you freakin' serious? You people are nuts…

Don't believe her hype people. She's still the same liar she was last week cackling at a direct question about her husbands payday from Columbian Trade talks.

Ed   April 12th, 2008 9:28 pm ET

Yeh right,
Billary is the biggest Anti-gun person that I have ever seen. She was against guns but now that she needs votes she knows a lot about guns. Well Billary, most people that I know that have lost their job are bitter, and they didn't have a cottage on the lake to go behind to shoot cans at either!

bj   April 12th, 2008 9:28 pm ET

Is there an admendment on lying? Hilary Clinton has been caught in two lies. 1.Bosnia and 2. The pregnant woman who was denied medical attetion at a hospital. You people make me sick. Barack Obama tells the truth that white people and few black folks can't handle-he tells a hard truth. Its ashame how Clinton can lie through her teeth and you people don't say anything hardly about but as soon as Obama says anything you people blow it to pieces. Face it this country is prejudice!!

KENNY ELROD   April 12th, 2008 9:27 pm ET

This so much crap! Check her voting record!!!! She's pulling the same stunt John Kerry did. I hope no one falls for this. She has voted anti-second amendment 100%.

Eddie W.   April 12th, 2008 9:27 pm ET

Again I am amazed at the number of Americans who are in such denial of the current position of which we are in at this time.Senator Obama spoke the truth when he stated that there are people (not only in Pennsylvania- my words) who are bitter because of their present situation in this country. There are those who Do blame others for their plight, but are directing their anger in the wrong direction. It is perfectly alright for people to take solace in their religion, in the things that they love ie; guns, but it is unacceptable to blame any one group of people for the fall of employment opportunities , the decay of our communities, the dismal operation of OUR government ( Remember some of you voted this president into office) so I don`t understand the uproar over his statements by The Clintons and others.
There two things that some people in this country find hard to accept: COMMON SENSE and THE TRUTH. They are the most powerfull forces in a persons character….we sometimes choose to think otherwise.

kman accomac va   April 12th, 2008 9:27 pm ET

This gets better and better. First Hillary is afraid of sniper fire and now she claims she was a sniper ………………. of ducks. What a joke next she will be posing in waders with a rifle. As Bill says shaking a finger, GIVE ME A BREAK! What does all this prove? Not a dang thing! If you cannot win on your own merits work to destroy your opponents. Is this christian like, is this for the good of the people of America? Is this what a uniter does? I think not. This is dividing, this is mean and nasty. This is try to win at any cost. This is the Clinton Machine. I hope the American public will see that Hillary is not one of the common folk, the common folk do not make 109 million dollars in a life time never mind in a few years. Ask yourself a question" What has Hillary Clinton ever done for you personally?" Not what she claims she has done, what has she done for you. Her dad probably did take her out behind the cottage…….. and whooped her butt for lying . Anyone but Hillary!!

Ito, Yokosuka Japan   April 12th, 2008 9:26 pm ET

Why is it that our politicians are shameless and disrespectfull and we worship them? They all need a good, public flogging. As for the people who feed into this crazy nonesence, ugh.

Vote Jessy Ventura in as a write in candidate when the presidential election starts at least we can cast our vote for a human; rather some beastly animal that lacks immorality.

The fact that all we have to choose from is Hillary Clinton, John McCain, and Obama is just horrible. Of the three at least Obama still has some dignity intact.

Of all the people in the America, these three candidates are the best we can do. God has left us on our own, we must have offended Him.

SkyPete,   April 12th, 2008 9:25 pm ET

I just have an uneasy feeling that she made up the story of being taught how to shoot at a cottage in Pennsylvania. She's never mentioned it before and it's awfully convenient to bring it now – methinks.

Hillary is going to milk this thing until the teat is dry.

ps.
did Obama make any comments about her Bosnia lie ?

Jane   April 12th, 2008 9:25 pm ET

Hillary should know about guns……she is a terrorist in her country! Divisive, underhanded, deceitful, untruthful and will go to any extent to get the power she wants for herself!
Wake up America!!!!

PS: Canada is not Pro-Hillary!

Ed   April 12th, 2008 9:25 pm ET

I really can't believe how people will believe someone like Billary who both have lied to America to her face and will jump on someone for telling the truth about how people feel about losing their jobs.. Well if this is what America wnats as their President then go ahead and vote these to lying crooks back into office and when they get through sending the rest of the jobs to Colubia, Mexico and Canada then everyone can truly say that we cling to faith and guns..

Jay   April 12th, 2008 9:25 pm ET

I wonder what has happened between 1999 and now that has convinced her to change her stance on the Second Amendment. In 1999, she lobbied for much tighter gun control. Now, she is showing respect for gun "culture" and her own gun roots.

Oh, now I remember what happened. Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Indiana are voting soon.

Judy   April 12th, 2008 9:22 pm ET

Bitter is the wrong word…People may be frustrated or disappointed about loosing their jobs….but certainly not bitter. And why did Obama bring up that people use religion and guns as a way of taking out bitterness? I'm not sure what he was getting at…I might understand him bringing up the fact people have lost their jobs in PA unfairly and that they may be upset…but I DON"T understand coorelating that with their methods of dealing with their pain. It is almost likesaying that they have religion and faith BECAUSE of their bitterness. It's not fair to say that…

Indiana Voter   April 12th, 2008 9:20 pm ET

Having attended this event, I find the focus of this article a bit bizarre. Senator Clinton spoke about many topics including jobs and security, had two members of the community whose jobs making magnets for the defense industry had been outsourced to China speak , and answered numerous questions from the audience. Rather than there being any sort of "awkward moment", I believe she answered the question from the woman whose son had been paralyzed well, expressing her sympathy to the woman and stating some of her plan to help cut down crime, including more police officers in the streets.

Did your reporter really attend the same event I did?

Ito, Yokosuka Japan   April 12th, 2008 9:19 pm ET

I think Obama should sue for libel. What this woman is willing to say without her conscience even blinking is a grave sign of deeper seated immorality.

To be clear, not that Clinton or any of her hateful, lying, pandering, and posing surrogates and supporting care, It was quite clear he did not say people pick up the gun issue because they are bitter. No, it seemed more to be along the lines that because they are bitter about Washington's impotence on economic issues, they are bitter; and therefore, these other issues play out more, such as Immigration, gun rights, and what not. There is a difference.

While I can't believe Clinton and her supporters are too stupid not to see the difference; I have to believe they intentionally refuse to acknowledge the difference and choose, rather, to blow things way out of proportion. So I wonder why they would do that? It is truly unfortunate.

When I was in junior high and high school, some bully would always take what I said and morph into something I did not intend to say.

So suffice it to say that we may now add the title bully to Hillary Clintons long list of undesirable traits.

Shame on you Hillary Clinton and shame on you Hillary Clinton supporters for pulling everybody and everything down with you. You are all shameless bully's. I feel for your children, I really do.

The second ammendment refers to "arms", not just firearms, so if you take it literally people could have any kind of arms they want, including bombs, and that would be foolish. And Clinton manages to have a positive experience with everything, including the sniper fire in Bosnia.

People on BOTH sides of the political spectrum in this country should be just disgusted by this transparent nonsense.

Tim in Maine   April 12th, 2008 9:16 pm ET

Yeah, Hillary, you're a regular Annie Oakley. How convenient to have a little family cottage outside Scranton. I cannot wait for the inevitable "fond memory" story of North Dakota.

In retrospect, I'm a bit surprised you didn't stress your tightness with the Bush family when you campaigned in Maine, considering they have a nice little place in Kennebunkport. Surely you or your husband have a number of fond memories sucking down beer and lobster with GW and Dubya. It might have helped with the caucuses you decisively lost here.

There still stands most important issue behind all this little campain talks : who did supported launch of Iraq war, and who did not. Should those who started the war be probed?.. tried?.. jailed?..

Obama 2008

Buck Burris   April 12th, 2008 9:15 pm ET

Barack Obama spoke a truth. Clinton who has trouble with that, seeks to nit pick Obama's statements.
Those who do not know Obama's position might read it in "Audacity of Hope" which expresses the same understanding he expressed in Indiana recently.
I grew up on a small Southern farm. During the Depression most of our meat came from hunting. I know very well what the issues here are. And Obama has spoken truthfully.
I am tired of empty headed attacks by a politician with nothing positive to offer.
Especially one who voted for the invasion of Iraq, for Kyl-Liebermaan and many other Neocon measures detrimental to averaage Americans. And her pretense to have opposed ther war angers me. Her pretense to have opposed NAFTA disgusts me. Her pretense to care for average Americans is laughable. She didn't get Scaife's support because she cares for us.

Ted   April 12th, 2008 9:15 pm ET

Now it's about guns and duck hunting? The discussion has gone from being "bitter" about Washington doing nothing to help some people to killing a bird?

Bond_dallas   April 12th, 2008 9:15 pm ET

She can tout this all she wants, but we know about Bosnia lies and $800,000 from Clombia NAFTA deals. It is all in the papers.

And by the way, Obama is right about people being bitter.

Delilah Mangum   April 12th, 2008 9:14 pm ET

Mrs Clinton,
If you have so much experience maybe you can tell me and countless others who have lost love ones how is it that guns are so readily able to come by for our young people. People don't have cars and money they have guns, How is it they can get them, can't get a credit card or fill out an application but they can get a gun. Your constant political bragging does not hit well with me, because in the city in the state where I live , getting a gun is like buy a piece of candy, that easy. The unemployment, the jobs loss and the drugs thats coming into our city is a constant reminder to me of what we need to focusing on instead trying to gain bragging rights.

Monesie   April 12th, 2008 9:14 pm ET

The woman asked Clinton what she would do about gun control as president.

Clinton touted her husband's record on gun control during his administration.

???

I guess the Woman asked her what SHE would do about gun control and NOT what HER HUSBAND has done.

Was she his adviser on gun control ? if she was why don't she says : " I advised my Husband Bill Clinton on gun control etc…

Maybe she was not

Strange to mix your future policy with records of your husband and prone woman enpowerment. or even worse misleading people on your track records

YounMale   April 12th, 2008 9:13 pm ET

Clinton looks like a crazy gun-toting maniac in this picture.

Iab   April 12th, 2008 9:13 pm ET

Another Hillary's Fantasy. Sorry Hillary. Please stop, you are killing us.

Time for Change   April 12th, 2008 9:13 pm ET

She will say anything to get a vote. People In Pa should be bitter about what has happen to them as well as the rest of the nation. If we are not bitter, it is because we have not suffered enough of the same oh same oh. It will be a great day when people wake up and see what is going on. We never get to deal with the things that need to be dealt with in this nation because politicians do a great job at keeping us side tracked. The second amendment will never change a long with many other things that they use to side track us. The cost of living is getting higher and for some the American dream is fading away. It is time for a change. You can not keeping going east and end up in the west.

GREG   April 12th, 2008 9:13 pm ET

Clearly the point is that people turn to soothing things when they are bitter or frustrated. When I am hurting, I often turn to God. Where is the offense? I don't get this "issue" at all.

What a LIAR.

Dennis   April 12th, 2008 9:11 pm ET

I'm amazed at how blown out of proportion this whole "bitter" nonsense is. What Obama said is correct. McCain and Clinton are twisting it to their own benefit, and they are doing so in a way that is obviously not what Obama meant.

It is especially surprising coming from Mrs. Clinton. She expects us to believe it was a "gaffe" when she "mispoke" about Bosnia, and yet, Obama is to be condemned for the twisted meaning she is giving his speech. Simply incredible. I don't think people are that stupid.

Really, you know something about guns? Do you know what sniper fire sounds like when you are running for cover in Bosnia? (with Sinbad, Ms Crow and your daughter?)

Liar liar pantsuit on fire

James   April 12th, 2008 9:09 pm ET

Obama's whole dialog is judged by the use of the one word. Rev. Wright's whole minitery life came down to a few seconds. Each tme the network news folks make it the topic of the campaign. I guess the use of the word bitter is easier to talk about than how hundreds of women and children can be enslaved in a compound in TX for years. Enslaved in the very state our president spends his vacations. We don't want to tackle this kind of religious issue. Let's talk about how happy we are to role up our sleeves and keep watching our jobs go overseas, and our kids die in Iraq and our citizens loose their homes to foreclosure.

Trust me people, we should not only be bitter. But "pissed" as well.

Bond   April 12th, 2008 9:09 pm ET

Typical Hillary, changing her positions when they are politically advantageous… how about pushing for strict gun control in '99? What a joke.

Interesting that CNN has decided to put 8 articles about Obama's "bitter" comment on this political ticker page!!! Nice balanced reporting CNN. Your .com editor should be fired!!!

bryan   April 12th, 2008 9:09 pm ET

ConsDemo   April 12th, 2008 9:08 pm ET

Sure Shillary knows about guns. Why didn't she say she landed in Bosnia taking sniper fire. That told her everything she needed to know. Hillary always tells the truth! Whatever she says, it must be true!

Good God…Hillary's STILL on the "bitter" comment? I wonder if she was "optimistic" and "resilient" the day she found out her husband was cheating on her with an intern? 'Cause I KNOW she wasn't….bitter. Instead, she kills ducks. Sheesh..

Slwhndfan   April 12th, 2008 9:06 pm ET

This is ridiculous. Instead of spending all this time on whether Sen. Clinton actually had to dodge bullets at an airport or Sen. Obama should have used different words to make his point, why can't we actually deal with the issues that matter? I find many things the candidates say either stupid or offensive – they are after all people and we all make those same mistakes. What I care about are the issues. Stop all the posturing and politicing and get to what really counts!

I'm happy that she is commenting on Obamas words about hard working Americans. Obama says that we result to guns when times are tough, well we are not ignorant. I'm tired and upset of people who look down on hard working Americans. Why should we vote for someone who can look at us in the face and bluntly say, you don't know how to help yourself without picking up a gun. This is an outrage and it take away the meaning of his entire campaign away

Christopher Williams NYC   April 12th, 2008 9:06 pm ET

Please!!!!, now Hillary Clinton is a champion of Second amendment rights? What a joke!!! Her campaign has proven that she would do or say anything to win. When she lost in Iowa, she cried. Where were those tears for the 4,000 plus dead soldiers in Iraq? Mind you a war she voted to authorize. Where were those tears for the Katrina victims? America wake up!!! The Clintons made $109 million dollars over the last eight years!!! That would definitely qualify them as the "elite" 1% of this country. And finally how can we trust her to run this great country of ours if she can't even run her campaign team? Mark Penn's resignation, and the financial mismanagement which forced her to "loan" her campaign $5 million dollars are just a few examples.

J. Mackey, Hamptons   April 12th, 2008 9:05 pm ET

. . . .Hillary's biggest gun is her double barreled mouth. She often
shoots it off while at the same time managing to shoot herself in the foot.

Steve   April 12th, 2008 9:04 pm ET

Well , Obama disclosed what he thinks about small town America . The Clinton circus gets more unbelievable every time Bill or Hillary open theirs mouths. Hillary a gun enthusiast ? Gimme a break. Seroiusly, give thanks to those three for the next Presidnt, John McCain.

Peg   April 12th, 2008 9:03 pm ET

Im one of the angry Americans… Obama spoke about…I know there is more of us out there, He knows that too. He is in touch with us. Offering us all hope for the Future. Are we going to turn our backs because Obama told us the truth? Or continue to believe in the lies of Hillary or John Mccain?

Kareem   April 12th, 2008 9:03 pm ET

Senator McCain and Senator Clinton don’t really care about small town America they care about making you believe they care about small town America. Senator McCain and Senator Clinton both have been in Washington for over 20 years they always hammer Obama on his lack of experience, but where was their leadership and experience in helping small town America during the past 20 years. This recession that the country is in didn’t happen overnight it happen on the “experience leader’s watch”. The only time they care about small town America is when they are looking to get elected, they didn’t visit Ohio, Michigan or Pennsylvania and speak out when factories were being closed and jobs were being moved over seas. Don’t believe the spin Senator McCain and Senator Clinton aren’t for small town America because they aren’t for America. President Bush + Senator McCain + Senator Clinton X Washington, DC = Recession for AMERICA. Vote Obama 08!!!!

Barbara   April 12th, 2008 9:03 pm ET

Obama spoke the truth, and we in the midwest (I'm in Michigan) a politician who levels with the American people. I'm surprised that the journalists and pundits are so isolated from unhip, uncool, unslick America

Raul Dominguez   April 12th, 2008 9:02 pm ET

I find Peter Hamby's blog about Sen. Bayh one sided. Where is the balance in his reporting and producing. Obama has made a comment, but Sen. Clinton and Bayh have turned this into a major scandal when he is giving an honest opinion of Americans' feelings. Mr Hamby and other reporters need to question her statements as well. With all the people she has met, no one has sounded bitter, upset, frustrated by their financial or social situation? If everyone's ok, then why run for office.

It is a same that when Obama say things the media and Hillary supporter jump all over it. CNN and Hillary herself if any of you have lost your homes and your job due to this economic crisis what will you do? I guess you will all be happy going down the street dancing and singing that you are happy because you have lost your job and your homes. Talk about Guns Obama did not say people use gun to kill because they are bitter or angry. Less call a spade a spade when you lost every thing you cling to things that you think will bring you happiness I don't care what it is. At the time of crisis is when most people call on the name of God. How many times you Governors have gone to church every day or on sunday. What about CNN reporter and Hillary? I myself will not take myself out of this. Jesus said all you hypocrite first take the dirt out of
your eyes then you will able to see to take the dirt out of your brothers eyes. I hope CNN will post my comment. Please CNN, Hillary, Governors who support Hillary please make a contribution and save people from losing their home and their jobs to make them happy instead of them to be angry and bitter because they have lost their homes and their job. Let us all be happy, sing and dance again.

UMMM RURAL PENNSYLVANIA IS MOSTLY AMISH!! THEY DONT HAVE GUNS AND THEY ARE THE MOST PEACEFUL QUIET PEOPLE YOU WILL EVER ENCOUNTER!!!! WHO DOES OBAMA THINKS HE IS?? DOES HE KNOW HE IS RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES with everything at stake including PA???? This isnt winning Oprah book of the month club!!! GUN TOTING??? I am living in PA right now and I dont own a gun and nobody I know does!!! I think his comment is so out of touch with what PA represents! I mean is he serious? We have real jobs and if he wants to talk about religion we have all of them from Hindu to Hebrew. PA is a collage of different cultures and religions. We are rich in not only culture but history. 300-500k houses are going like hot cakes around me so I dont know what he is talking about. We are a hub for manufacturing because of our close proximity to ports but yes have lost jobs to overseas but so has every other state!!! We have some of the best Hospitals and Universities in the country. Its a great place to live! He better learn how to speak because he will lose BIG in PA !!!

Kenneth M.   April 12th, 2008 9:00 pm ET

Hillary is purposely misunderstanding Obama because she is getting desperate. She knows his real point was that section of the country has been left behind during Bush 1, Clinton, and Bush 3 presidencies.

Instead of fighting he on the truth of the matter by saying Clinton worked hard for that section and here is what he did, she is trying to focus on the word bitter and use it against him. Same thing with McCain; why does he not list the things the Rep party has done for small town America as that is the real point.

No mater, only those who would not have voted for him in the first place will have an issue with this.

Lee From Treasure Island Florida   April 12th, 2008 8:56 pm ET

My mother, a Canadian Immigrant taught me to shoot a rifle, but first I was taught morals and values. Number 1 in our house was never to lie. You see, my mother thought, that if you never lied it was difficult to committ many of the other sins. Clinton seems to be missed this lesson apparently as she twist Obama's words, which is lying and also spreading false witness against thy neighbor. Not to mention how she and Bill have ran this campaign and his Presidency. Obama not once mentioned Bosnia, when he could of sang from the roof the tops, nor did he dance on about Penn, CAFTA and Bill accepting lobbyist monies from Colombians too…He stayed on his own stump.
People don't notice that…or do they? My mother would of admired this man, and would not have found much fault in any of his words.

N Harkinson   April 12th, 2008 8:56 pm ET

LaTonya M.   April 12th, 2008 8:56 pm ET

I have a comment to make about Sen .Barack Obama's speech and the use of the word bitter. I feel that the word explains me and just about every other American that has t live paycheck to paycheck, and wonder if we are gonna have a house to live in or if they are gonna cut medical insurance or even when we retire will there be any money . Yes I am bitter because America is suppose to be the land of oppurtunity and yes it is the rich get richer and the poor get poorer,And if Sen. Clinton and Sen.Mccain don't realize that then they are just as out of touch as President Bush. BITTER IS FORECLOSURE, NO MEDICAL INSURANCE,HIGH UTLITY BILL, HIGH FOOD PRICES, NO SSI, JOB RELOCATION,JOB SHUTTING DOWN,JOB LAYING OFF, HIGH PROPERTY TAXES, And if there are Americans who are going through this and say they are not bitter then they are telling a lie to themselves. YES THEY ARE !!!!!!!!!!!

Okay. How about this? If you're not "bitter" for whatever reason vote Hillary or McCain. If you're "bitter" then vote Obama. But whatever you do don't let the candidates define the word "bitter" for you.

Two of these people are very rich and who actually will be president or what condition the economy is in will not hit them as hard as it will most of the people allowing themselves to get caught up in this nonsense.

"People cling to guns and religion because of bitterness". Not this is Obama's view.

One of the reasons why America never turned to Communism is largely because of America's strong religious roots. American people didn't need ideology to replace thier God and the inspiration. And under the constitution, people of different faith are living in the neighborhood without going against each other despite of strong religious background. That's the strength of America and how democracy works in America. Also Americans don't cling to guns becasue of bitterness.

How can he run the country without understanding two major part of America that is important.

DON SNEED   April 12th, 2008 8:48 pm ET

This nation needs to spend as much money on gun education for children as we do for Driver Education! Both items if used improperly
kill! As as child growing up I had a rifle at age of 10 but was taught how to handle it and when to shoot it and when not!

Charle/Amsterdam, Netherlands   April 12th, 2008 8:46 pm ET

It is hilarious to watch American politics from the outside. The politicians, the media and from the many comments I read also the voters are about to cricify Obama over poor choice of words, while ignoring the real problem he was trying to address. And you seem to side with a flatout lier and a war loving man who has no clue about the economy. This is really beginning to look like a replay of the last days of Christ. Almost 2000 years ago, people prefered a murderer over a man who was trying to lift them up and who wasn't afraid to say some painful truths. I fear that the narrowminded citizens of America are about to repeat that. too bad you prefer a soap opera over a real debate on the issues that are at stake. But then again, politics all over the world is just show and the USA is famous for its blockbusters.

CY from a non democratic country   April 12th, 2008 8:46 pm ET

I am a Clinton supporter but at this time I truly think that I am coming to despise them….are you kidding me..this story just broke last night and they are already running to the superdelegates to hold this against him…this is the last straw for me…they've sunk so low that I cannot in good conscience vote for someone that is this vicious. Her husband and chief strategist are taking money for free trade and the Obama camp hasn't said that much about..they've mostly stayed out of this huge betrayal…For them to go to the superdelegate already about what Obama said that is justifiable correct is beyond belief…And yes, I and everyone else that I know is BITTER about the way the government has betrayed us. The Clintons has not only lost my vote…they've lost my respect…They are the most divisive people in this world and they would rather burn down the whole democratic party than lose this nomination. I've given them the benefit of the doubt till now but I am done with them. Just for the record I am extremely BITTER with them now.

Independent   April 12th, 2008 8:46 pm ET

Obama's mindless ramblings the other day, connecting guns with anger and bitterness is totally off the wall! He's insinuating that only bitter, mad and crazy people run out to buy guns out of frustration…. that they must be mentally unbalanced! That is a totally irresponsible!

That sure doesn't describe my father who was born and raised there, or my grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. He's being horrendously offensive, and so far, his "I regret" doesn't cut it
as an apology. NOT AT ALL.

The more Obama is out there, the less we like him. We're seeing that he's no more than AN EMPTY SUIT!

Danny C   April 12th, 2008 8:45 pm ET

Obama did not board the plane after an election loss without thanking his supportors. Thats called respect and humility. Hilliary in her arrogant high and all-mighty snobbish style left states she loss in without as much syaing good'bye. The hypocrisy and desparation is sooooo obvious. Continue to stand strong among both sharks…Hilliary and the Republican McBush. I do not know of any candidate in my life time having to fight off people in his own party and competing party during the primaries. Hilliary, you disgust millions of people!

LD   April 12th, 2008 8:45 pm ET

Hillary, stop bothering Obama. You speak about experience, you hurt yourself. You speak about the Bosnia Trip, you kill youself. You lie and mislead voters of OH and TX about NAFTA.

Now, you and your liar Staff try to complicate an important remark made by Sen. Obama. Do you still need to lie, mislead and say sorry because you mispoke ? Ma'am, it is now time to stop. No more disgrace and no more Clinton at the White House. It does not work like that. Bush-Cilnton and Clinton-Bush and now you want to impose us a Bush-Clinton again ? No no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no

Jay from MA   April 12th, 2008 8:44 pm ET

I hope this isn't one those memories that never happened. You know she good for coming up with false memories.

Jen   April 12th, 2008 8:44 pm ET

Sorry but I dont agree with Hillary on this issue and making such a huge deal of it. I am BITTER!! I am ANGRY!! I am down about the American Government and how it is being run today and the past years since the Clinton ERA! I dont think the government is working for the american people at all.

Obama keep on doing what your doing… your not trying to tell people what they want to hear (lies) your telling the truth and putting it all out there honestly. Just many people just dont want to hear it because they are blind and dont have much common sense. I am all for it. I totally believe it too. I know its true.

Jen, Gainesville   April 12th, 2008 8:44 pm ET

All candidates sometimes do not word their sentences as well as they wanted. Such a storm from a causual talk in a private gethering! Just compare with how Obama reacted ot the Bonia scandal, which was definitely not "misspoken" but prepared lies at multuple public occasions. Just judging the personality, not even whether it is miswording of truth or polishement of a lie., I choose Obama.

fed_up   April 12th, 2008 8:44 pm ET

Gomer is at the helm today.

andanotherthing   April 12th, 2008 8:43 pm ET

I think it's sad that so many African Americans have voted for Obama thinking that he is "all about them" . I have felt from the start that this guy is really out of touch with anything except his own ego. It's not just this blunder, it's his whole campaign. It's just a performance. Thanks to Oprah.

Warren   April 12th, 2008 8:42 pm ET

It is amazing how we allow ourselves to get easily distracted from the real issues like the economy and Iraq. How unimportant news turn into a big deal not only by the candidates, news media, and Americans themselves. I guess during this campaign the "silly season" will always play a more important role above the real issues. Give yourselves a hand America. Job well done.

Nowhere Man   April 12th, 2008 8:42 pm ET

Yeah, you know a lot about guns. Ya mean like when snipers are shooting at you! Or you "think" they're shootin' at ya? You're just one of the "guys" now, right? In less, of course, they're gangin' up on you. How pathetic. LOLF!

Obama '08!

melisa   April 12th, 2008 8:42 pm ET

she rgith about guns and she any know that too bad to obama is suck!

Bill, Covington   April 12th, 2008 8:42 pm ET

It is now time to get away from the stupid Obama "bitter" comment.
Barak Obama is not de nos jours:….Forget him.
Concentrate on how long it will be before I learn that Hillary was there with me on Okinawa, May 1945 and she is an expert with an M1.
These two are really creepy, and scary.

cc4obama   April 12th, 2008 8:42 pm ET

With all that experience with firearms, why didn't she shoot back at the snipers in Bosnia???

I'm not sure if I trust the story about her dad teaching her how to shoot – she can't remember what happened in 1996, how can she remember what happened when she was a child???

How many different "home states" is Hillary going to claim. She claims NY to be her home state, then when she's campaigning in Pennsylvania, she claims roots in Scranton. Today, she was campaigning in Valpraiso IN, and she was telling childhood stories growing up there!! Next she'll be claiming that she's related to Orville Redenbacker who is also from Valpraiso!!

Just remember…Hillary will say anything to get herself votes. She'll never keep any of her promises.

Michael Mee   April 12th, 2008 8:41 pm ET

So I guess this election will be Republican vs Republican then, yes?

Jules Millogo   April 12th, 2008 8:41 pm ET

Could that be why Ms Clinton got confused about ducking sniper fires in Bosnia?? Witnessing gun fires from her father in the back yard may have deeply impressed young Hillary!
More seriously, with the war siphonning 400 million dollars a day, American people losing their houses every day, is this the right moment to tout experience in using guns??? It is sad that our political leaders do not seem to have their priorities straight.

TonyA   April 12th, 2008 8:41 pm ET

I wonder if this so called experience with guns comes from her close call in Bosnia?

Doug Haxton   April 12th, 2008 8:40 pm ET

The 2nd amendment has nothing to do with hunting, Mrs. Clinton.

Fred   April 12th, 2008 8:40 pm ET

That woman will say anything to win. Now she is sort of claiming to be the next Charlton Heston.

Look at what a blogger wrote:

Sam in Indiana April 11th, 2008 6:02 pm ET

If you have lost your job and are going into foreclosure, you are bitter. PA people should be very mad. And they should never forget that the Clintons were the ones who supported NAFTA. And what about Columbia and Bill Clinton and their $800,000 gained from it?
____ I agree with you, Sam.
How in the world can a person who makes about 5% of what the other two candidates made be an Elitist? Billy and McWarCain are each worth over a hundred million and they say they empathize with the ordinary worker? Oh, please give me a break?

Does anybody remember when McCain scolded the American workers and told them they are not willing to do the work illegal aliens do? Remember? If not, contact the Minutemen and ask them about it.
Oh yeah, Billary and McWarCain are looking out for us.

Dan   April 12th, 2008 8:39 pm ET

I hope she knows more about guns than she knew about bullets in Bosnia. She sure knows how to shoot off her mouth, that's a fact!

Key West Sun   April 12th, 2008 8:38 pm ET

You go girl………….Obama has shot himself in the foot, arm, and you know where, so show the world what a true leader looks like. Just saw him on CNN and he is still sticking his foot in it.

IF   April 12th, 2008 8:38 pm ET

It explains why she grew up with a tendency to shoot down people… metaphorically, so far. However, it's not so subtle when she brings up these stories, as an answer to what she sees as a gaffe on the part of her opponent.

Teaching young girls how to shoot, is not, mercifully, something dads commonly teach their children. Mostly, they' are teaching children the value of life, be it human or ducky. And keeping a gun as "part of who they are", is scary. And… demeaning.

"Keeping guns out of the hands of criminals" is the least one would expect of gun owners. What about the criminals who weren'r criminals until they committed their first crime using those guns so readily available?

Peoria   April 12th, 2008 8:37 pm ET

Ha, it's like Hillary doesn't remember which party to which she belongs. Is she running against Obama as the Democratic nominee, or she running against Obama as his Republican opponent?

At least someone in the audience called her out for it.

Man at work   April 12th, 2008 8:37 pm ET

I'll bet she's touting her experience with guns. Clinton is obviously turn coating on the dems, and good riddance. Obama's comment were an affirmation as to why we're voting for him, and a call to all hard working republicans whom are also fed up and need change. To them I say this: We know your struggling like the rest of us, in order to in-act real change we must all come together, voice our voice, and not fall for the same old tricks from the republican rule book that get us nowhere and do nothing for the everyday working man / woman IE guns and gay marriage. Two important value issues, but come on, no-body's going to take your guns away and well, gay marriage… I won't even go there… you know deep in your hearts these are more issues for rallying sides than helping or changing anything. This election must be more than about sides if we are going to take are government back from the special interests, I know this, you know this, Clinton and Mccain, well they're just not on our side. VOTE OBAMA !!!

curtis in WI   April 12th, 2008 8:36 pm ET

I'm not an expert with guns, but I am pretty sure if someone shot at me it would be an experience I would clearly remember for the rest of my life.

swede_mariner   April 12th, 2008 8:36 pm ET

What Obama is saying about some people are getting bitter makes perfect sence. At least that's not a lie, and he is the only candidate with a background, who can validate that.
Clinton and McSame and their bloggers seem to think that being bitter is un-patriotic or un-american.
I appreciate your honesty Barack Obama, out next President!

pbj   April 12th, 2008 8:36 pm ET

“You know, my dad took me out behind the cottage that my grandfather built on a little lake called Lake Winola outside of Scranton and taught be how to shoot when I was a little girl,”

Sure. I bet anyone all the money to my name (which isn't much because of my economic situation-which I'm very BITTER about) That this is totally a lie. She has hunted ducks? Sure. This lady lives in fantasy land.

Also, is she advocating that we should teach all kids how to shoot guns? I believe in the right own arms but we have a serious gun control problem in this country. Teaching kids to play with guns is a great idea….

Robert   April 12th, 2008 8:35 pm ET

Here is a direct quote from a May 9, 1999 story in the New York Times:

The Senate is to begin debate next week on a number of gun control measures, some of which mirror proposals offered recently by President Clinton. "The senators need to hear from all of us," Mrs. Clinton said. She urged voters "to give them the encouragement to do what they know is right and to remind them that there are many, many millions of American voters and citizens who will stand behind political leaders who are brave enough to buck the gun lobby, wherever that may take us, so that they will vote for the measures that we know will save lives."

Kevin, NC   April 12th, 2008 8:34 pm ET

Hil-Liar get a life…..is the story about your father even true, were you even born on earth and have a human genealogy?

Obama wasnt saying that people who carry guns are bitter, he was saying that many american are angry/upset/bitter at their situations in life which have been caused by lack of opportunity and government ignorance to their respective plights, and when the economics of man, woman or child is upset, they become upset and when there is no change they do become bitter, some even blame those who they feel are responsible, whether or not they are right or wrong. They blame mexicans , black and so on, and some black and mexicans black each other and whites.

Stop spinning Hil-liar and tell us some true stories……

JimmyBoy   April 12th, 2008 8:31 pm ET

Thank you Hillary.

Most people have guns and choose a religion because they have a choice. It is the freedom America gives them to do so. And what millions have paid their lives for.

Bitterness?
Is this something Obama learned from the sermons at his church?

Or is this Obama really talking about himself because small town Americans are not falling for his line of BS.

Keep giving them hell Hillary. I feel like I am a real man because I truly believe in equality. Many men try to regard women as inferior so they can feed their weak egos.

z   April 12th, 2008 8:31 pm ET

She really makes me sick. Opportunistic pandering. The dumb thing is, people really do fall for this.

She claimed she could bowl, but then got gutterballs on Ellen. I hate to know what she'd do with a gun….

The only guns she remembers were the imaginary ones shooting at her in Bosnia.

As for Obama's comments, they were obviously taken out of context. Read the whole speach to get the big picture.

Bill, Streamwood, IL   April 12th, 2008 8:31 pm ET

Maybe Senator Clinton can buy that once-used hunter's outfit from Senator Kerry for a "pro-gun" photo-op.

But it won't look any better on her, and most people won't buy her folksy story about learning to shoot from grandpa, or was it learning how to be a sniper from some Bosnian?

how?   April 12th, 2008 8:30 pm ET

How can Obama claim to be better able to work with republicans- reaching out across the aisle- when he can not even connect with many democrats?

And, why do people define Hillary Clinton as the divisive one, when she has a proven solid history of being able to reach out across the aisle and work with the republicans in the senate? She is far more centrist and he is far more leftist. So who do YOU think would be more able to find the common ground?

Obama can not even connect / agree on anything with a moderate republican like McCain… how will he fare with the "gun-toting, God-clinging" far right?

Diane Boyd   April 12th, 2008 8:30 pm ET

Who is she trying to appeal to? I wish she would get the facts straight before making her sly comments.

Independent66   April 12th, 2008 8:29 pm ET

Hillary, it looks like you may have the nomination in your sight after all. At least you will let us keep our guns. Obama is digging himself in deeper and deeper every time he speaks these days, of course so do you and you need to remember to choose your words carefully, as King Leonidas was reminded in the movie 300.

Angela, WPB, FL   April 12th, 2008 8:29 pm ET

Thank you Hillary for illuminating the Obama's inexperience by calling attention to his stupid comments. This man is clearly out of touch with the American right to have guns and have any religion of their choice and they have nothing to do with being bitter. His comments are a clear indication that he is NOT even close to having the insight and well rounded knowledge that is necessary to be the President of the United Sates. He obviously has some pretty deep seated opinions that are out of touch with the general population and the historical development of the American mindset. He cannot govern well if he doesn't understand the people he hopes to govern.
Hillary is the one that should get the nomination. Obama is just out of touch and not ready.

My brother kept rifles in the house where we and my brothers and sisters grew up and would go pheasant and duck hunting. My father as well would go deer hunting. My brother still hunts deer and elk. Religion has been our family mainstay and we are thankful for this great America and for rveything it stands for.

Osburt   April 12th, 2008 8:29 pm ET

This is like something from the Onion.

So Clinton is so desparate for any angle that now she's touting her affinity for guns??

I'm guessing that story about learning to shoot out behind the cabin is about as truthful as the story about the Tuzla snipers. Except now she knows that there's no risk of a videotape surfacing.

Spirit of America   April 12th, 2008 8:29 pm ET

It's called Deer Hunting with Jesus, and it ain't all bad. In fact, it is so much part of Pennsylvanian core culture that it is a religion of sorts. Go Hillary. You know the people so much better than your elitist competitor.

Paul in Oregon   April 12th, 2008 8:28 pm ET

I hope people realize that if Hillary is elected, her administration will be a polorizing and vindictive regime. Hillary's campaign is no different than Bush's and look at the mess.

People are bitter because of the horrid economic mess. They have been hurt by NAFTA and Hillary is lying about not wanting it. Shame on Hillary. She voted for the Bankruptcy bill and now says those without job and are in the process of losing the homes…. Well they are just happy resiliant people. I guess if you earn millions of dollars you can say the little people are just soooo happy.

Hillary voted for this war and says she was mis-informed. She didn't even read the Intelligence reports or have hearings. She was just like the rest of the sheep and followed Bush.

Hillary just like Bill will lie to us and we will be stuck with at least 4 years of gridlock. Maybe those resiliant people can just last another 4 or 8 years and show some smiles. Bill didn't help them and if you think Hillary will help them…. well I have a real niffty bridge to sell you.

If Billary steals the nomination, I will either sit this one out or vote for McCain. 16 years of lying, gridlock and stupidity is just about all I can stand.

Matt   April 12th, 2008 8:27 pm ET

jay   April 12th, 2008 8:27 pm ET

So now Hillary tells a story about her father teaching her how to shoot a gun……now…..should I believe THIS story or not? You know the former first lady seems to have a problem remembering things accurately. I am tired of her crap and I am BITTER, yes I will certainly use the word that Obama used, I am BITTER with how this campaign is going and I am BITTER that I had to pay $3.59 a gallon for gas, when the former first lady and her husband, the former president have made money hand over fist the past nine years….and now the story about the vice president making millions over the past year…..yes, Mr. Obama I am BITTER and you have the permission of this American to say just that…some Americans are bitter about the entire situation in this country.

Val   April 12th, 2008 8:26 pm ET

What? Why can't she talk about issues? Not Obama.

She can't make a speech without mentioning his name. She can't have a conversation without saying something that he might have done wrong. She surrounds her attention around his policies more than her own policies

She's making him number one, unconsciously. Now I'm wondering if she dreams about him.

She is too simple to be the President of the United States. Can't answer complicated questions on her own without someone writing scripts for her to answer.

WorldSportsDaily   April 12th, 2008 8:21 pm ET

I find it quite troubling how viscious this democratic primary is ending up to be. Hillary Clinton seems to be making up stories in my opinion, just to attack at Barack Obama's latest comments.

Tom   April 12th, 2008 8:21 pm ET

For God's sake, don't challenge Cheney to a "shoot off"!!! She's right though, it's been a part of our culture since this country began. Maybe it's not an intellectual enough pursuit for Mr. Obama, but I've heard that, given the opportunity to vote, even folks in Michigan and Florida would go for this without even being "bitter"!

It's difficult to tell at this point whether Mr. Obama is trying to fool more people than he's making angry or the other way around (cause let's be honest, he's fooled a WHOLE BUNCH so far!) but either way, he's not going to be our next President.

Ursula Hultgren   April 12th, 2008 8:21 pm ET

If Hillary had a well rounded education, she would understand that Obama's comments are correct. He has had, obviously, more education and experience in the realm of sociology, psychology and cultural anthropology. Senator Clinton sounds like a red-neck. Since when, in America, is education and knowledge something we denegrate or lampoon.? It is obvious to me that Sen. Clinton and her supporters contribute much to the "dumbing down" of America, and frankly I have had enough of that with George and friends!! Anyone who has suffered an unexpected "reversal of fortune" whether it's losing a job or a loved one knows the persuant bitterness and frustration. Feeling abandoned in our agony, it is not unusual to substitute another issue which is easier to defend if not understand.

Why don't you ask your Paster if you have one why poeple in problems revert to God and churches. That is the reason they are there.

Norm   April 12th, 2008 8:19 pm ET

Oh sure, her dad taught her hw to shoot and she hunted ducks… how can you believe her? Even IF its true, what difference does this make to anyone? Maybe she should get photographed hunting or riding in a tank…

I guess when you can't win on the issues or your "advantages" you try whatever you can. This is a nothing issue that the media and the Clintons are trying to turn into something. If Clinton thinks she can be President, then she should act like it. She and her campaign are pathetic!

OpinionatedProf   April 12th, 2008 8:19 pm ET

Yea, whatever. Grab onto anything Obama says that you think is an opportunity to get to the White House again. This time, when you are ex-president you can then earn as much as Bill does on the circuit and then you can not "stand by your man" – or whatever.

It does not take a village, since you will burn the village to get whatever you want.

David Kolva, MD   April 12th, 2008 8:18 pm ET

Please go back to the news archives when Hillary was running against Rick Lazio for Senate in 2000:
"Mrs. Clinton supports licensing new guns and registering new gun owners. Mr. Lazio opposes those measures, arguing that the nation should first enforce existing gun laws before considering national registration." New York Times 11/5/2000.

Now she is touting a new gun policy because she will say anything to win. Do you see the pandering to rural Pennsylvania?

Is Hillary now running for the GOP nomination?

cathys   April 12th, 2008 8:18 pm ET

Hey Hill,,,Is that the cottage with no heat? Boy next we will hear of how you had to hunt for your food. But quess what we are bitter! We are bitter that we lose jobs while some people can make $800,000 due to free trade.
Some of us live in houses with no heat— and not just in the summer!

Obama didn't mean anything by his remarks. They were true observations and nothing more. I do NOT intend to vote for either democrats, but Obama's remarks were true. Give it up Hilary – you are making the whole process ugly and more people will not vote in November if you keep this type of stuff up.

We are all tired of remarks being made into something they are not. Let it go!!

Please do not keep repeating this story over and over. I like to be a news junky at election time but am already tired of this type of attack.

If American's dont know when they are being deceived by politicians, then they deserve another eight years of failure. That a candidate spoke from his heart that Americans are "bitter" and angry over what they have suffered is condiscending, then this country and the people must lack sense. If Americans are not bitter by now I am. I amd bitter because my home is almost in foreclosure. I am bitter that I can't get a job. I am bitter that I have to choose between buying gas or food. I am bitter that John Macain and Hillary voted and gave george bush the permision to send our young men and women to Iraq to die while Hillary Clintons husband made 800,000.00 form shiping our jobs out of the country and John Macain made tons of money. American's, have we lost so much confidence in our selfs that we are now letting criminals tell us what to believe. Can you Imagine Hillary Clinton and John Macain whom made millions of dollers call a Man who is not even rich out of touch. Anyway I don't blame them. I blame the American people for what is happening to us. We have let the media tell us what to think and give opportunity for this criminals to rule our lives. Go Obama!. You have done your best. If the American people dont want you, Let them have another eight years of Clinton or Macain. Where ever we find ourselves, our butt put us there.

Dave   April 12th, 2008 8:16 pm ET

I am growing weary of McCain and Hillary jumping on every little nuance of the words tha Obama chooses to use. Obama has an excellent sense of what the people in this country need and want from their politiicans and Hillary McCain are throwing everything they have at him to keep him from winning. (Including the kitchen sink). Go Obama!

Ryan   April 12th, 2008 8:16 pm ET

Okay, is there ANYTHING that this exaggerator doesn't claims she can do? How are voters supposed to take her seriously when she so conveniently comes up with a new story to relate to whatever demographic voting base is coming up? I, frankly, don't believe anything anymore that spews from her mouth.

d4obama   April 12th, 2008 8:15 pm ET

This has got to be the most manipulative person in politics. She will twist and turn and flip and spin anything to try and pursuade people into voting for her. Scary. Thank goodness the average American is smarter than Hillary. Can't wait until Barack is her president.

I wonder if this is another one of those Bosnia sniper stories again. Too bad, it's hard to believe any stories she tells now.

As for Obama, his true color is showing.

Both are equally disgusting. It's like choosing between the frying pan and the fire.

Can we have another Democratic candidate?

Tricia   April 12th, 2008 8:15 pm ET

I watched Hillary in indiana today, and I am filled with such confidence in her. Her plans for our economy, trade, healthcare crisis and withdrawing troops from a failed exercise in iraq is really what we need right now. We are all human and may mispeak, but her intentions and direction are what should count. I believe her completely when she says she'll turn this mess around. She has the experience, the know-how and the drive to accomplish it. I wish she could be seen by the media that way.

Go Hillary!

8 articles in a row about "bitter", then this one. Obama's bitter comment is getting much more coverage than outright lies by Clinton ("sniper fire" and a pregnant woman denied care because she couldn't pay).

If Clinton knew anything about guns she wouldn't support blanket bans on guns and would understand that criminals get guns illegally in the first place. All gun control does is disarm the law-abiding citizen from protecting themselves from an attacker.

Linda   April 12th, 2008 8:13 pm ET

Obama must be tired. Why are Demcrats so good at screwing up the best chance? With Hillary kind of politicians manipulating people's minds, the strongest will be doomed bleeding and faint by their own family member.

FrankSmith   April 12th, 2008 8:13 pm ET

For the uneducated Hillary supporters, here are other words that you can easily use in place of "bitter" if you have been harmed:

resentful
angry
cynical
hostile (as the Clinton supporters might want to feel when Obama gets the nomination)
cheated (as Hillary feels about Monica)
hot
strong feelings

Let us not waste time on words because Hillary says words are "empty; only solutions matter." I love you, just simple words!!

John   April 12th, 2008 8:13 pm ET

Clinton's stance on firearms is only marginally better than Obama's. She really knows very little about firearms except they go "bang". The Second Amendment isn't about hunting. And wasn't it her husband who mistakenly said something about protecting our ability to "hunt ducks with rifles"? Hello! You don't hunt ducks with rifles, Bill! Sorry, but this latest gambit of hers holds about as much water as the sniper lie.

Sarah   April 12th, 2008 8:13 pm ET

I grew up in a small town. My parents still live there. Based on my experiences I'd say Obama got it right. Unfortunately, he speaks honestly and not in carefully crafted soundbites. It takes more than reading a headline or watching a 30-second blurb to understand his point. Clinton's distortions are shameful and her quaint picture of smalltown life is incredibly condescending.

Jack - Miami   April 12th, 2008 8:13 pm ET

Sen. Clinton does not have lot of credibility…. Its quite possible that she might be making this up to get vote…. Whereas, Sen. Obama has tried to paint large swathe of people with same brush… but has lot more credibility…. Now this poses difficult choice for democratic voters…. whether they want to go with inexperienced but honest Barack or experienced but not so credible Hillary.?

Personally, I will go with Barack as in my opinion he can improve upon world view and gain more experience but Hillary is beyond correction… she has shown in the course of campaign that she has very serious character flaws and we cannot afford it in this critical junctur in our polity

Kevin M   April 12th, 2008 8:08 pm ET

What Obama said was true. Economic despair leads voters to vote on issues like gun control and religious issues rather the economic ones. After 8 years of economic prosperity under Bill, It's a good guess that Bush wasn't elected twice because they wanted better jobs. It's a tough road when saying you want to help out of work people in PA leads to a controversy this big. I don't envy Obama.

WHAT a contrived, MANUFACTURED non-issue…

What he said was CORRECT. And anyone stupid enough to be offended by it, is too stupid to know that THEY, themselves ARE bitter!

(and you say BLACKS are hypersensitive) !!!

GEEZ…..

Do you really think this is anything other than "pounce" on "true" statement; make a BIG deal of it, and MAYBE people will FORGET that BILL GOT $800,000 to plug a trade agreement that his wife'd against.

I truly would have thought that Hillary's inability to answer a question of "conflict of interest" would be an ACTUAL story.

My frustration with this country is showing in this writing. Just when I didn't think our citizens could not be any more stupid (i.e. 8 yrs of bush)… THIS (A FREAKING…..TRUE…. STATEMENT…) gets more than a casual glance….. (i weep for this country…)

Sue   April 12th, 2008 8:04 pm ET

She has blown this way out of proporation. This is not about race religion or guns. It is about bitterness because the American people were sold down the river and it started with Hillary Clinton and NAFTA. She still has not answered all the legitimate questions put to her, and she blows this way out because she does not know how to be honest, unless it lines her and Bill's pockets.

rick, salt lake city   April 12th, 2008 8:04 pm ET

So she shot a gun. Can we believe this story. After the Bosnia sniper story, the story of the young lady not being admitted to the hospital, and saying she was against NAFTA when records show she attended the meetings for NAFTA. I question her opposing the Columbia trade deal when Bill has received $800,000 making speeches to supporters of the deal and the money goes into their joint account. I will say she is a bull dog campaigner but how will she control Bill when he can't be controlled on the campaign trail. This Country doesn't need an Aristocracy of succession. Bush, Clinton, Bush, and Clinton again. We are better than that. There are other people who can lead us.

Lovell Sewell   April 12th, 2008 8:02 pm ET

I hope the states that or voting would not let the nonsense turn their view on Obama. Hillary Clinton would do anything to win and it shows everyday we in this campaign. How can you think because a person say people or bitter towards the government because they do not understand them mean they or not connected. Hillary Clinton is doing the same thing in Ohio that is to change and lie to fit the people. I am bitter and there are many like me that are bitter due to the economy, the jobs, this war. We need to stand up now if we want change or continue to be lied to.

Obama 08

the point   April 12th, 2008 8:02 pm ET

The point is not feeling bitterness or believing in the right to bear guns… the point is how Obama trivialized an entire group of people- hard working Americans with financial struggles- and claimed that this caused them to become gun-toting, God-clinging racists with antipathy towards others. and blinded them to voting for real issues.

That is just insulting, condescending and demeaning.

He feels so superior to his fellow Americans that he can not even see his own smug arrogance and cockyness.

MCQ   April 12th, 2008 8:01 pm ET

I just cannot trust hillary's "fond memory " on anything. NAFT, Bosnia, stock market deals, Mr Paul (2000 Senate fundraising). At her age, Bill has admitted she has lost thoughts when commenting on a blast from the past.

OBAMA 08

Barbara-California   April 12th, 2008 8:01 pm ET

My God, does she ever know how to "milk a story!" She is definitely a "compulsive/obsessive" person. She keeps picking up on everything anyone else says, then puts her own twist to it, to make it sound like her opinion is the only thing that is true and "counts." How "looney" is this woman anyway?

Tessa   April 12th, 2008 8:00 pm ET

Southern Democrat: All three of the candidates have a lot of explaining to do. If you don't believe that people losing their jobs and homes are bitter then you are living a fairy tale (as Bill Clinton likes to say). In fact, you must be living on another planet. If Hillary Clinton can't stand up to the pressure without whining and trying to divert attention from her millions then tell her to get out of the game. The pot needs to stop calling the kettle black – they are both BLACK in case you haven't noticed. It is time someone tell it like it is. No one is looking down on small town America and you know it.

Mom Dem   April 12th, 2008 8:00 pm ET

Exhibit A:
I realize that there are some well-educated, open-minded, gun-toting, religious citizens out there. SOME. Most citizens fit into only two or three of those categories. People are either enlightened or not. The wealthy can afford enlightenment (college, etc.); the poor that cannot escape the cycle of poverty created by wealthy republicans can only cling to hope–the one hope to which the poor have clung since almost the beginning–religion. Throughout history and at this very moment, more people have been killed for religion than for any other reason.

I don't envy Obama or Clinton. Anything they say is parsed and analyzed so thoroughly and out of context. Hillary and the republican will have a field day with this. Who would even guess that Obama was simply saying that these people deserve economic opportunities to have a more prosperous life.

Jacqueline, NY   April 12th, 2008 7:57 pm ET

I have heard a lot of the "bitter" comment controveray and I have a real issue that bothers me. Isn't illegal to record someone without their knowledge? The person who recorded this said that she was disturbed by what he said and turned on her recorder. This could not have happened if she recorded the conversation. She walked there with her tape recorder already on. Smells like a rat.

I heard the comment and I am still wondering what did Mr. Obama say that was wrong? He told the truth, but, I guess Americans do not like to hear the truth.

ross   April 12th, 2008 7:56 pm ET

It's obvious Hillary doesn't agree about the peoples' bitter attitudes about trade. She hasn't even fired Penn yet. She's so ridiculous, and the woman with a paralyzed child knows this. That's probably why she asked about gun control.

ES NYC   April 12th, 2008 7:56 pm ET

Alex from IL   April 12th, 2008 7:55 pm ET

Talk about historical revisionism. During the 1990s, during the Clinton years, restricting firearms was the Democratic Party's big issue. But I suppose she conveniently differers from her husband in this regard, right?

MotherGinSling   April 12th, 2008 7:55 pm ET

I used to support the Clintons, but I'm no idiot and I'm not going to be fooled by smoke & mirrors. I don't care what they SAID, I'm looking at what they DID on trade and I don't like it one bit! Clinton said that she opposed NAFTA, but they proved that she promoted it when Bill was President. And how can she be opposed to the Colombian trade deal, if Bill was paid $800,000 to promote it! I am not stupid enough to believe that the Clintons are looking out for me. But guess what–now I AM just bitter enough to vote for Barak O'bama. At least he's not trying to sugarcoat the truth.

I agree   April 12th, 2008 7:55 pm ET

Still… that really was not the worst of the implications Obama made by his really dismissive statement.

What I gathered from it is that Obama thinks people who struggle to build a life for themselves in difficult financial times, tend to find scapegoats for their troubles and project their bitterness as antipathy towards other Americans-especially immigrants, gay people etc.

And because of this tendency to Cling to the comfort of hate, they are failing to receive his message of hope and change. Another words they are not willing to be saved by him- prefering to cling to God instead.

Obama thinks these people are too stupid and bitter to vote on the issues like the economy and the war. They just cling to God and guns as they blame others and hate others.

Val   April 12th, 2008 7:54 pm ET

OMG I can not Stand Hillary.

This is one white woman who will never vote for Hillary.

I don't want a liar for my president.

Greg   April 12th, 2008 7:54 pm ET

I think most gun owners are well aware of Clintons disdain of our military and gun owners. Her past actions speak louder than any words she can say now. She must really be desperate if she thinks this new tale is going to convince anybody to vote for her.

carriejo   April 12th, 2008 7:54 pm ET

To bad she didn't have her gun when in Bosnia dodging all those bullets. It's so amusing that she can come up with long tales so quickly.

Hillary supporter   April 12th, 2008 7:53 pm ET

I too was taught to shoot and respect guns when I was growing up. I was taught they were not toys and how to carry and put them away safely and how to shoot safely and where and how not to shoot or point a gun. The people who use guns for the purpose to harm others will obtain them illegally if they want to do harm, so why take guns way from the law abiding citizens who just like to shoot for recreation or hunting? Also, Obama has a bad opinion of most of American , it appears to me, and I don't see how someone so bitter himself can possibly bring this country together! I think he either needs to sink or swim with his words, just like Hillary has too, I am sick and tired of hearing CNN take up for him. He doesn't have to watch what he says, because most of the media takes his side and give excuses, thats why I like to listen to Glenn Beck. I don't agree with him on everything , but when it comes to Obama , people need to listen!

Kentucky Voter   April 12th, 2008 7:53 pm ET

“You know, my dad took me out behind the cottage that my grandfather built on a little lake called Lake Winola outside of Scranton and taught me how to shoot when I was a little girl”

She used these skills she learned from her father to fire back at the Bosnians that she was under sniper fire from. Using that gun she was able to defend the young pregnant woman that couldn't receive healthcare, and therefore saved the world from Lex Luthor and his evil corporation.

…and it's all true because Hillary Clinton says it is.

Anthony Marshall   April 12th, 2008 7:53 pm ET

I live in a small town in Pa. I lost my job due to closing of facility. I am bitter but I continue to be happy. Obama was absolutely correct in what he said. The lady who put it on blog followed his bus, she felt so offended that she waited 5 days, on a friday time for people to dwell on it, and right after Bill Clinton's revisited Bosnia event. What a way to divert her Bosnia incident raised by Bill. What a spin put on it just like punishing daughter incident. What makes matter worse the media knows what he was saying, so does the people, this is what cause division amongt people

skylark   April 12th, 2008 7:52 pm ET

You have GOT to be kidding me. I sure hope the good people of Pen. realize that Obama was telling the truth about people being left behind and felling frustrated and not be suckered by this spin. Anyone who buys that Clinton would be friendlier to guns than Obama is not doing their homework. Really folks, Senator Obama was talking about how because people have been left behind and don't feel they can trust the pol's they vote based on wege issues. It's NOT an insult it's knowing how people are feeling I know that most of my friends who fit the "mold" feel like that. I wish Obama would not only not back off this but start a campaign along the good ol line "yes were mad as hell, and were not going to take this any more!!!"

Matthew, San Francisco   April 12th, 2008 7:48 pm ET

Oh my God, this is so sickening. She disagrees with everything and anything she can disagree with with Obama. She is such a pandering opportunist who pounces on any topic she can and twists it to relate to the normal person. Shooting guns by a lake in Scranton? God, can she be anymore polarizing?

FOR THE "UNEDUCATED BILLARY VOTERS": – hear is an explanation of Obama's speech:
People don't trust politicians when it comes to improving economic conditions. Therefore, they rely on their faith, their communities, and their rights (the 2nd Amendment) as opposed to voting on the issues that will enhance their economic conditions. The Republicans have exploited this through "wedge issues." Why do you think that marriage amendments, gun rights, and other amendments are attached to the vote in key states? It's done in order to distract voters from asking questions about what politicians will really do.

BUT, TRUST ME FOLKS – BILLARY WILL TRY TO SPIN MY HONEST AND EDUCATED TRUTH!!!

I dont understand why Obama would say people cling on to guns through frustration it is stereo typing at its worst, its rediculous. Saunders has come out today and said Obamas got a lot of explaining to do and hes right you cant go around saying people without jobs are bitter, they are not bitter they have pride in who they are and want to work. Its that attitude and determination to want to work and knowing how much of an improvement the economy and employment status will be when Hillary is president that keeps them going.
This guy is making mistake after mistake, he is not fit to be President, I dread to think what mistakes he will make if he was to get to the White house which he wont. After all that has happened it would be insance if people still vote for him.

Nana   April 12th, 2008 7:46 pm ET

Whatever Hillary! You are such a liar. You have been avoiding your own lies about Bosnia and your position on NAFTA after making over $800K on supporting free trade to Columbia. Now you have the nerve to attack Obama on these statements he made offering empathy to people who have lost jobs and who the government has turned its back on? It is unbelievable the "free ride" the media gives you and how they attack Obama on every issue. I would not vote for a liar like Hillary Clinton if she was the last person on earth. I will pray that people see through the negative press and vote for Obama for President. He is the only who truly cares about the people in this country.

Barbara L. Giles   April 12th, 2008 7:46 pm ET

I really do not see what the hoopla is all about. What Obama said was the truth. I do not believe what people will stoop to to defame person's character. Hillary is graspsing at straws that are simply wisps. I think that Hillary should take care of her husband's "flap." In addition, Hilliary's supposedly "death" trip to Bosnia seemed to be a joke to the media. At least Obama is being honest with you. Hillary is a pathological liar, and it has been proven. So who do we want as President of our great nation-someone who speaks the truth or a liar? Through history, I have learned that people do not want to hear the truth because they want to ease their GUILTY consciences.
And speaking about out of touch, I, along with some of my friends, always cry whenever we see Obama dancing on Ellen. This video shows that he is a person just like us. And this Elitism that people are talking about! Obama is no Elitist. Some people may think he is because of the strides that he has made, and maybe, just maybe, some people believe that only certain people should belong to the Elite group. I sense envy and prejudice here also. Think, before you cast your votes, Pennsylvanians. Do not be fooled by the wolf in sheep'sclothing. Do not fall victims to Hillary like the Ohians. OBAMA 2008!

Bill   April 12th, 2008 7:45 pm ET

This woman raises pandering to an art form. Obama spoke the truth even if it did come out wrong. Hill is trying to be for and against the interests of gun owners at the same time. Is she misleading gun owners? Or gun control supporters? Or both? Either way, she "misspeaks" like a rug.

A NY   April 12th, 2008 7:45 pm ET

I was so excited about this election. Was a big Hillary supporter! Frankly speaking I am disappointed with the manner in which the various campaigns are being runned, the negative attacks and the bias media coverage especially Fox and the Lou Dobbs show. I will not vote for Hillary…Neither will I vote for McCain. The jury is still out for Obama…not that I expect the DNC to give the nomination to him.

I would love to hear more about the Green Party and Nader.

theroadrunner   April 12th, 2008 7:45 pm ET

Ann Marie   April 12th, 2008 7:45 pm ET

Why do so many Americans have a need to shoot a gun? Even hunting for pleasure is questionable. Hunting should only be done for the purpose of food. Shooting animals for no reason in my opinion is wrong. America is gun happy and so is Hillary. I knew she was a Republican at heart. No wonder she and trigger happy McCain are working together against Obama. WOW
Pennsylvania for Obama

Tom, AZ   April 12th, 2008 7:45 pm ET

Well said Pete, Obama said when people are frustated and bitter about government, Politician will use guns and religion like a wedge to sway away from what really matter to small town America, and Hillary fell right in this trap. Way to go Obama!!!!

A change is Coming!!!!

Monroe   April 12th, 2008 7:45 pm ET

People are just not getting it. Obama did not say anything like "people only believe in God because they are bitter about economics." That's crazy! His claim was that when people feel that government cannot do anything to improve their economic situation, they vote solely on controversial issues that politicians use as "wedges" to divide and conquer. He is trying to say that it is possible to effect change on issues of common interest to working people that far overshadow the wedge issues. This is what he's been saying all along: that it is time to come together to reclaim the American dream rather than continue to bickering and scapegoating.

John Hoff   April 12th, 2008 7:45 pm ET

Yet another reason I'd vote for Hillary, or I'd vote for John McCain (reluctantly) but I'd never vote for Obama. He lacks the broad life experience of Clinton. His outlook is completely urban. Hillary understands small towns through her husband, even if she didn't grow up in them herself.

Obama is dismissive of small towns, the backbone of America. This one single remark is capable of destroying his whole campaign.

Evan   April 12th, 2008 7:44 pm ET

HILLARY ClINTON calling Obama elitist?

That is SO RICH!!! 108 million dollars, all charitable donations to her OWN FOUNDATION. Oh yeah, she's the one who is "in touch" with everyone.

These remarks of Senator Clinton are the clearest example of what is meant by the word "pandering" that I think I've ever seen. We've never before heard stories of her experience with guns. Why now? To capitalize on her opponent's fumble and pander to the audience.

such a liar   April 12th, 2008 7:43 pm ET

Sure you do Hillary. Just like when you said you were dodging sniper fire in Bosnia. Just like when you said you tried to join the Marines. The Marine would have never turned down a lawyer!!! What a joke. If you knew how to fire a gun, you would have taken aim at Bill's crotch a long time ago and saved Monica's blue dress a trip to the laundramat Get a life, liar.

I just hope that all people realize the good in Obama and rise above this petty stuf. I will continue to be faithful to Obama because I believe he is the one to be our next president. I also believe he ia an honest man and Clinton has been caught in her own lies. I hope this back fires on her. I don't believe McCain has the strength to become a president.

But Hilliary, do you think that's how the killing on college campus happen, People hunting for food is ok, but shooting…shooting at what?

Genevieve   April 12th, 2008 7:40 pm ET

Obama's views are actually shared by many people around the world, especially Europeans. Gun culture and bible-thumping are regularly singled-out as salient examples of the 'red neck' culture and general backwardness of small-town America. Obama would like to culturally 'convert' small-town America. As for Hillary, I think she would like to do so too, but she is not as stupid or politically naive as Obama. On the other hand, she has a tendency to over-empathize with voters… this bit about 'I know about guns' won't really help her… it just makes one think about what she said about sniper fire.

Where is the common standard when Obama gets hammered on symantics and Hillary lies (repeatedly). Bayh's a centritst who, 40 years ago, would have been a Goldwater Republican like Hillary. Why does the media give more time to these stories than Hillary's numerous fallacies?

Hillary Clinton is so disingenuous. She is completely misrepresenting what Barack Obama said. Her description if what he said compared to what he actually said is like her description of landing in Tuzla under sniperfire and what it was really like landing in Tuzla.

Also worth noting that Hillary Clinton was anti-gun when it was politically expedient back in 1999 when she was running for the Senate in NY. She blasted the gun lobby then and now she's painting herself as some sort of gun lover.

She'll say whatever it takes to get elected.

A funny thing now starts to happen when I hear or see HRC anywhere … I think of BUSH !!!! Bush ?!? My god what has she done to herself ?! Like when dubia open his mouth, like a REFLEXE , I start deciphering for lies, pandering and venom. This is someone I was rooting for 3 months ago. Now I can barelystand her sight , less her voice. Its to a point where IF she ever were to win by some sort of fatal miracle, I'd vote for NADER . Nader !!! I don't even know the guy. I mean aside from the fact that he comes somewhere between Obama and McCain.

Larry, Bellevue WA   April 12th, 2008 7:34 pm ET

Oh great, she's 100% behind the second ammendment but willing to co-sponsor a constitutional amendment limiting the first. Why not just join the Republican Party and call it a day?

Pete, NC   April 12th, 2008 7:33 pm ET

Here she goes again trying to twist a story in her favor. Sen. Obama is a Constitutional lawyer who taught at Harvard School of Law. Anyone can pull a trigger, but can you fellow the law, the Constitution that is. Hillary needs to clean her own house of conflict of interest of NATFA/CATFA. That's what matter to America were are our jobs and were they might go. Wake up Hillary!

Hillary the Chameleon   April 12th, 2008 7:33 pm ET

So she went from incumbent, to teary eyed in New Hampshire, to protective mom in Ohio, to underdog, to being unfairly criticized by the media (whiner), to brave first lady ducking enemy fire in Bosnia and now she is a gun toting rural raised girl. How about we call her what she really is, a LIAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Someone that instantly morphs into whatever the situation calls for at the time. Too bad she underestimates the intelligence of the citizens this time.

Mimi in TX   April 12th, 2008 7:33 pm ET

I was an Obama supporter but now I am changing my vote! I am changing my vote to Hillary Clinton because she is in touch with the American people. Just like Hillary most Americans grew up with a summer vacation home with no heat and no working water (why would you need heat in the summer?). Most Americans make 109 million dollars in 6 years and most Americans will tell a bold faced lie and say they "mispoke".

Yes! I am changing my vote to Hillary Clinton because unlike Obama she understands how Americans need great healthcare EXCEPT her campaign staff who apparently doesn't need it as much because she didn't pay their healthcare bill.

Hillary is so in touch with the American people that she fought for us America! Yes she did and Bill Clinton too! They fought for us right after they cashed their 800,000 check from the Columbian trade deal. Hillary is so right! We need a president who will stand up for us just like she did as senator for the people of New York. She promised 200,000+ jobs in New York and I think the media is unfair for attacking her when they said she didn't keep her word and New York lost 30,000+ jobs!

Come on America! Hillary understands the struggles that us little folk are going through—SHE UNDERSTANDS JUST AS LONG AS IT'S NOT HER GOING THROUGH IT.

Seriously, my vote is for Obama! I 'd take his straight talk anyday over a compulsive liar and a warmonger.

John from Las Vegas   April 12th, 2008 7:33 pm ET

With all her experience with guns I hope she accurately shoots herself in the foot. Again.

OBAMA '08

Rod   April 12th, 2008 7:32 pm ET

Gumby Clinton. Flexible on all issues. Last month, she was an insomniac who answers calls at 3 AM. Last week, she was a revisionist historian. Today, she is a gun-toting southern mama. What's tomorrow? McCain in '08 groupie? It's time for a change.

FreshFlavor   April 12th, 2008 7:32 pm ET

Should have stayed behind the barn.

Dee   April 12th, 2008 7:32 pm ET

You have to be really obnoxious to frame someone raised by a poor single mom as "out of touch" with what real people face, especially when you yourself were brought up with more money than you know what to do with.

ron   April 12th, 2008 7:31 pm ET

Is she tired and misspeaking again? Her experiance as I see it is allways hind site.
Supported NAFTA, now want out
Supported Iraq ,now wants out
Whitewater, now wants to crack down on lenders
Corperate lawyer, now wants to work for the common man
Solicalist healthcare, Given 8 years didn't get it done

Dee   April 12th, 2008 7:31 pm ET

She always says "You know…" right before she says something that is supposed to "connect" with the people.

I bet most people wouldn't relate to her wealthy upbringing.

She created a scandal out of one irrelevant comment by someone who actually understands what people are going through…typical manipulation by her.

And Obama is on the defensive because he refuses to harp on every little stupid "miss-speak" she makes, as they all do, on a daily basis.

Patty   April 12th, 2008 7:31 pm ET

Well, isn't that just dandy!

Patricia   April 12th, 2008 7:31 pm ET

Why do I find this amusing?

Tito Valentino   April 12th, 2008 7:31 pm ET

of course we know your experience with guns in Bosnia. Wonder why you didnt use your trained skills to take out all the snipers before they started shooting. Liar. America will surely be the laughing stock of the world if they vote you to power.

Goldie   April 12th, 2008 7:31 pm ET

That is not what Obama said. Clinton is twisting this. Obama believes in Second Amendment rights. There is no difference between the two on this issue. Obama was saying that the issue of guns or gay marriage or immigration becomes the issue that people vote on when they don't believe the government will do anything about the economy. That is what I heard. That is how the Republicans have won on for a long time, by people voting on other things than the economy and if Clinton doesn't understand this well, she won't be a good candidate against McCain. And frankly, Clinton doesn't seem to see anyone but optimistic people even when they have been left behind by the economy. That's who she saw in Pennsylvania, the upbeat ones. No upset people need bother her.

Latina Here   April 12th, 2008 7:30 pm ET

Go Hillary your our Girl!

Bitter???????   April 12th, 2008 7:30 pm ET

Perhaps Obama's experience with guns and church have been more on the negative side, he after all has only belonged to Rev Wright's church, so I can see why bitter would come into his mind when talking about religion. He has only lived in Chicago, so I can also see why only negative things come to his mind when he thinks of guns.

But the rest of us, we are not Chicago and our church's are not like Rev Wrights.

Bri   April 12th, 2008 7:30 pm ET

Dan   April 12th, 2008 7:29 pm ET

Of course you do, Hillary. You've just shot yourself in the foot with gun-control activists.

Are you kidding me?   April 12th, 2008 7:29 pm ET

It's funny how Clinton and McCain are taking the same approach at attacking Obama. That should tell people a lot about Clinton and her loyalties to the larger Democratic party. She needs to take her selfish ways someplace else.

Heavy the D   April 12th, 2008 7:29 pm ET

This woman is actually grasping everything that will deviate her appalling and unfortunate lies about her Bosnia trip and the uninsured pregnant woman from voters mind, but the fact still remains the same. She is incapable of organizing her campaign staff. She is bluffing about her experience wow, this is funny to me because I've not seen anything good out of her 36 years in the Government other than being the bossy woman in her home with her little dog(Bill). She should give us a break, no wonder why someone called her a monster actually in upper cases MONSTER.

mark from PA   April 12th, 2008 7:29 pm ET

Hillary is out of her mind. there is no way i woud give a gun to my children or to teach them how to shoot . hillary, what you have is not true

Kyle in San Diego   April 12th, 2008 7:29 pm ET

Wow, the pandering just DOES NOT stop. I really think the Hillary campaign has resorted to sitting around the television screen, picking out parts of Obama's speeches that they feel they can twist and use to trip him up, while attempting to pander to that particular group of people he makes reference to. It's become so sad and obvious that she's reactive versus being proactive in her campaign.

Not to mention that it's very difficult for me to believe anything that comes out her mouth. Let's see if there's some fact checking in regards to this behind-the-cottage shooting, lol. Or maybe, Ellen can bring Hillary on her show to teach the audience how to shoot. ((ridiculous))

George   April 12th, 2008 7:29 pm ET

Being able to twist someone's remarks is certainly slick. Slick is not a character trait that is synonymous with trust Hillary. When you sleep with a slick woman you should hide your wallet..

Jimmy O   April 12th, 2008 7:27 pm ET

Hillary and Bill for President. Please vote the Clintons for a third term. We do not deserve better, that is our destiny. They know how to lie like real politicians.

The Clintons and the Bushes forever. After Hillary, Jeb Bush. After Jeb Bush, Roger Clinton. After Roger Clinton, Jeb Bush Jr. After Jeb Bush Jr., the lady we have all been waiting for, Chelsea Clinton.

Vote the Clintons for third term please , so they can get to "work" for the American people. A couple of more millions from dubious businessmen and "supporters" would not hurt.

Hillary 08, the Bosnia warrior, Ready to "lead" on day one. Strong on foreign policy, defeated snipers in Bosnia. Tested, Strong, the fighter…!!

Ken, LA California   April 12th, 2008 7:26 pm ET

I would rather have a job than a gun, that is what Obama meant, no one is taking away the second amendment, if people in PA would rather vote for guns thans jobs so be it.

Dean - Colton, CA   April 12th, 2008 7:26 pm ET

The President's attitude towards guns has nothing at all to do with anything. The Second Amendment gives us the right, and it matters not whether the President disagrees or not. Remember – the President is the head of the Executive Branch… the branch that enforces the laws, not make them.

This is just another one of those annoying attempts to appeal to people on a non-issue. Tell us what you will do to deal with the economy, the environment, immigration, health care, international trade, etc. Views on religion, guns, etc. are more or less unimportant… unless, of course, you agree with Obama that people turn to these issues because they believe politicians won't deal with the real important ones.

So which is it Hillary?

Sarah   April 12th, 2008 7:26 pm ET

Sue   April 12th, 2008 7:25 pm ET

I used to think Clinton would be the best choice for President. Then I watched her deliver gaffs that became harder and harder to swallow. She says we need change – but she is Washington. She opposes NAFTA, yet she has benefitted from her husband's 800K for promoting it in Columbia. She has parsed every word Obama speaks, especially when he utters the truth we all know – and comes back today to say that everything is suddenly glorious (what happened to the tanking economy? Did we miss something?). Has she lost her home to foreclosure lately? Has she lost her job to NAFTA? Has she had to tell her kids that they can't buy new shoes because funds are low? If she had, wouldn't she be bitter? I am sick of these games she plays. If we cannot speak the truth about issues, and sugarcoat them to get elected, then who will fight for us?

Leano   April 12th, 2008 7:25 pm ET

The problem with Clintonian politics is that it is opportunistic, therefore it gets carried away by the wind. Obama politics is visionary hence, he does not have to overstrategize, and be like the wave of the sea tossed about without foci. That is why he's not said anything about the Bosnia thing, because that is not what he's about. For this reason we say that Clinyon says almost anything to win.

JJ   April 12th, 2008 7:24 pm ET

the same red state people that helped bush get 8 years in office are now trying to help hillary become the next democratic candidate, no biggie it will just make my decision to vote McCain that much easier. its all very funny and sad.

Utah Teacher   April 12th, 2008 7:24 pm ET

Let's try this in smaller sections–less confusing that way…
Part One:

I realize that there are some well-educated, open-minded, gun-toting, religious citizens out there. SOME. Most citizens fit into only two or three of those categories. People are either enlightened or not. The wealthy can afford enlightenment (college, etc.); the poor that cannot escape the cycle of poverty created by wealthy republicans can only cling to hope–the one hope to which the poor have clung since almost the beginning–religion. Throughout history and at this very moment, more people have been killed for religion than for any other reason.

God, she is going to run this "bitter" thing into the ground just to win PA, like she did with the 3am ad to win Texas. The sad thing is that it is all just bs. Obama's use of the word "bitter" was correct; Americans ARE BITTER and for good reason. The word isn't demeaning, it is an accurate way to describe the anger and frustration people feel when their country has forgotten about them.

Sad that Clinton can twist Obama's words and there are actually people who fall for it.

Mark Billingsley, Sacramento, Calif.   April 12th, 2008 7:19 pm ET

If Hillary has so much experience with guns, why didn't she hunt down those snipers in the hills of Bosnia when she visited with Chelsea, Sinbad and Sheryl Crow? What a pandering fool she is…once again she twists Obama's words and takes them completely out of context. Unlucky for her that outright lies about Bosnian snipers don't have much context to twist and distort. Either she had to run for cover after landing or she didn't. SHE DIDN'T!

Patrick   April 12th, 2008 7:18 pm ET

Come on CNN, report the REAL ISSUES, if this is news, I might as well go to Perezhilton.com

VOTE OBAMA 2008!!

Rafeeq O. McGiveron   April 12th, 2008 7:17 pm ET

How astoundingly disingenuous Hillary is when trying to soft-pedal her elitist disdain, if not downright suspicion and hatred, of law-abiding American gun culture! Clinton's criticism of Obama's remark about "bitter" gun-owners "cling[ing]" to the topic of gun rights is of course right on the mark. For Hillary to paint herself as somehow more of a down-home, gun-lovin' good ol' boy than her opponent, however, is absurd to the point of offending our intelligence. Hillary rarely met a gun-control law she didn't like, and in my book, that means she doesn't respect the Constitution, doesn't understand the gun culture, and doesn't trust the American public with their God-given rights. Please, Hillary–you can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can't fool gun-owners with such pandering drivel.

JN   April 12th, 2008 7:17 pm ET

Just like she and all of her fellow cronies in Washington have manufactured you a bunch well paying jobs. Is this real? Can people really be this blind? Obama was right. With the lack of upward mobility, people will cling to their guns. Guess what? No one is challenging your right to own a gun. By N.C. I would be willing to bet that with all those guns out there… no wait, I pray that doesn't happen. This country wouldn't survive another 1968.

adrienne   April 12th, 2008 7:14 pm ET

SueB   April 12th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

Well, Hillary, it's a good thing you know how to fire a gun. Next time you're in Bosnia with all those snipers, that could come in handy for you.
In the meantime, you know that's not what Obama said. He said that when people feel helpless because their government has let them down, they turn to those things they can count on. Religion, family, friends, community. When people feel helpless, they fight for their rights. Guns are a tradition that go back to our pre-revolutionary days and people want to preserve their right to bear arms. When their jobs are outsourced to India and China (Thanks for that, by the way, Bill and Hillary), they may just not want immigrants to come into their communities to compete for the jobs that are left. Americans are not stupid, Hillary, we see through your attempts to hi-jack this nomination. It won't work. Go Obama!!!!!

Mark   April 12th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

It's time to end this perfect storm of stupidity and elect obama.

jlu2thdr   April 12th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

Hillry would twist and spin breakfast cereral if she found out Obama did not like it.

It is a sad state of elections nowadays when you have teams of people perusing the other candidates every utterance for ammunition (no pun intended).

Hillary has been all about dragging down Obama for weeks now rather than touting her own qualifications…because every time she does, out pops a "fabrication"

Bills says "They act like she robbed a bank" when Hillary flubs, but full disclosure of character when Obama mispeaks.

Our American Right   April 12th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

Firearms are a part of American culture and will always be. Obama's comment that Americans "cling" to their guns, was insulting to patriots; whose forefathers fought and died to protect our Right to Bear Arms.

Ifeanyi Azubike Houston Texas   April 12th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

Tell it like it is Hillary. Obama is a scary man that I fear needs ANOTHER Vacation while Hillary keeps going and going. There is nothing between Obama's ears and I think that speaks for itself. Don't forget to take Michelle with you.
VOTE 'HILLARY '08″ OR "MCCAIN '08″

Phyllis, Dallas TX   April 12th, 2008 7:11 pm ET

What a bunch of BS. Talk about someone trying to be all to all people.

Bajanluv, Newport Newss   April 12th, 2008 7:10 pm ET

Oh dear Jesus. Go ahead–overplay. Last time she told the story it was Ak where she was shooting.

Observer   April 12th, 2008 7:10 pm ET

Good grief Hillary, another far-fetched anecdote! Next, you will tell us you had to dodge sniper fire out behind you dad's cottage. I believe you would tell us anything whatsoever to get elected.
Hillary, maybe you and Obama need to have a skeet contest to see who has the best marksmanship. You already failed to even up the bowling score, so this contest would likely be a comedy as well. I'll stay far away.

Dina   April 12th, 2008 7:10 pm ET

You have GOT to be kidding me right?????? P-A-N-D-E-R. All she does is say what people WANT to hear instead of what she really feels. What does this woman stand for? Seriously, what? She's so opportunistic and disingenuous. It's scary.

Michael   April 12th, 2008 7:09 pm ET

I figured the mainstream media would figure out a way to spin this so it is Clinton's fault that Obama said PA small townsmen are "bitter". Doesn't suprise the least. All she was saying is that guns are a past time for some people. That doesn't mean she can't support strengthing gun laws. She supports the 2nd Ammendment but also supports strengthing gun laws. Sounds smart to me. I'm sure people will continue the spin though. Between this bitter comment and the Jeremiah Wright contreversy Obama has NO CHANCE against McCain come November.

GO HILLARY 08

G from the ATL   April 12th, 2008 7:09 pm ET

Just like the guns she used defending troops against Bosnian sniper fire.

Yvonne   April 12th, 2008 7:09 pm ET

I hope Obama doesn't choose Hillary as his VP because if she likes guns, he'd have to be careful around her. Lord protect him.

Allen in NC   April 12th, 2008 7:09 pm ET

To the good people of Indiana…. The homestate of my lovely wife, Go jump in your cars. Ride around your county, Look at the plants, factorys, the jobs that no longer exsist. The jobs that used to be your's, mine, They are gone over seas to other countrys. Countrys that make the same products that we the american people used to make an income here at home… AMERICA!!!

The same products that we had, no doubt that if our children play with these toys we didn't have to wrorry if our child is going to get lead piosioning? The same products that we never had to think about, is this dog food going to kill my pets?….

The very same thing that was american made and american approved…. GONE!!! Gone because of politicians, Politicians such as the Clintons. Politicians that can deposit 800,000 tax payers out sourced jobs into a joint account. Polticians that can then turn around and in the same breath tell the amerian people that I/Hillary don't approve of my husbands NAFTA.

Then sit down and think to yourselfs a while…. Do I really want more of having nothing? No jobs? More NFATA?

It's up to us Indiana, Pennsylvania, North Carolina. It's up to all thoses states that were told that you don't matter. It's up to all the americans that feel like they have been lied to. It's up to,

"WE THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA"

Deborah   April 12th, 2008 7:09 pm ET

Hillary Rotten Clinton

We really don't care about your lying opinions any more

Liar Liar pantsuits on fire!!!

Alice   April 12th, 2008 7:08 pm ET

I long for the day that this woman realizes her dream is over. There will be no coronation, Hillary. Many of us are just so sick of your pandering and lying about your "experience".

Ed   April 12th, 2008 7:08 pm ET

Clinton is twisting Obama's words…most people won't buy it. If
Obama wanted to he could "crawl" down in the gutter with her
and sling plenty of mud at her. She might as well give up…either
now or later…it doesn't matter…she is done….

Ali   April 12th, 2008 7:07 pm ET

This woman is getting more pathetic each day. She is really clinging to whatever little thing she can find! Just go away Hilly

No Obama   April 12th, 2008 7:07 pm ET

Dave C - N.J.   April 12th, 2008 7:06 pm ET

Pathetic pandering.

Hillarious Clinton   April 12th, 2008 7:05 pm ET

Did she make these comments in her faux-Southern accent too?

Monica, Texas   April 12th, 2008 7:05 pm ET

Hillary I hope you are better with a gun then you are bowling…You know the last time you tried you put on the spot. You knocked down 3 pins???? Quick, maybe you just mis-spoke again.

Rita O'Reilly   April 12th, 2008 7:05 pm ET

HIllary will say anything to get elected we have seen her lie spin and make up things. She's shrill, no more Clinton and there mess Please!!!

Jan, DC   April 12th, 2008 7:04 pm ET

Two Words: Political Opportunist.

This woman would tell you she killed Hitler just to get elected if people would actually believe it….
