Watch former President Clinton Sunday in Bloomsbury, Pennsylvania.

(CNN) – Former President Bill Clinton finally spoke up Sunday about the controversy swirling around Sen. Barack Obama’s recent comments after being uncharacteristically silent just a day before.

“Folks, I was shaking hands and taking a few pictures backstage. This fellow looked at me and he said, ‘I just want you to know, the people you’re about to see are not bitter. They’re proud,’” Bill Clinton said at a campaign event for his wife, Sen. Hillary Clinton, in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania.

The former president also took the opportunity to respond to Obama’s assertions that small town America was not made better off economically during the eight years of the Clinton administration.

“Do you agree with that?,” he asked.

“No,” the crowd shouted in response.

“I just thought I’d get a few witnesses here. You know, I’m a Baptist. On Sunday, we look for witnesses,” replied Clinton.

This whole "bitter" controversy is weak at best…..Can't believe the word "bitter" has made it onto the PC list now….ugh. What the heck are the Dems doing to society?

GrannyRyan53   April 13th, 2008 9:05 pm ET

So??? CNN, this is not news, neither is this "so-called controversy," Do you have to be so obvious in your adoration of the Clintons by printing this kind of fluff piece???

Prould to be an American   April 13th, 2008 9:04 pm ET

Mr. Clinton, I have alot of respect to you, but keep running your wife's campaign this way won't do any good. People are bitter over the facts that we are in a critical time of history and no one is listening to us, that what we are bitter about, those people who told you they are not bitter are already decided to vote for Hillary. I guess you are not bitter too, since you have earned 109 millions dollars, win or lose, you guys are doing just fine, unlike the rest of us~~~

ChrisD   April 13th, 2008 9:03 pm ET

Awesome!!! BHO go home.

alice2   April 13th, 2008 9:01 pm ET

BARACK OBAMA 08. I LOVE IT.!!!!!!!!!!

Mary   April 13th, 2008 8:56 pm ET

Enough of the Clinton's and the Bushes, what a disaster for this country. Hillary Clinton is as fakey as they come. And her husband is a philanderer, and we all know he does not believe in his marriage vows except as they advance his political career, or his wifes.

David   April 13th, 2008 8:54 pm ET

Yeah, And "I didn't have sex with that woman…" GO AWAY, YOU HYPOCRITE. And countries pay you all that money JUST because you gave a speech, or introduced them to a third party, Yeah Right!!!

IM   April 13th, 2008 8:30 pm ET

Monica would be a great witness. How about we ask her for her account? Bill is a baptist for two services a year. And a player the rest of the time. Bill shut your trap please, America has Clinton fatigue.

Luci Lui   April 13th, 2008 8:25 pm ET

He flaunts his Christian faith here but he had broken just about every one of the 10 Commandments.

Read Carl Bernstein's blog about what a Clinton presidency would look like. Not pretty.

Clinton's just need to come up with something better (like his policies) to say in stead of picking/using one single word from Sn. Obama's speechs.

carlo   April 13th, 2008 8:00 pm ET

Huffington Post has an article quoting Bill-o saying almost the same thing in 1991, but he called white males "financially insecure", among other things. Go and check it out. He really should sit this one out.

Ann, MI   April 13th, 2008 7:59 pm ET

Can't I be both proud to live in a rural area AND bitter about Washington ignoring us year after year? Apparently not if you support Hillary Clinton.

judyb   April 13th, 2008 7:57 pm ET

The problem for Bill and Hillary was that there have been many witnesses!

Hmmm! I wonder if there really was a man backstage that made that declaration. Since the sniper fire incident, it is difficult to believe anything the Clintons come up with.

Joe   April 13th, 2008 7:33 pm ET

I'm bitter that your wife is running for president and not you!!!

Kent, Illinois   April 13th, 2008 7:31 pm ET

Bill, you must be attending the services on Sundays alone because Hillary already said she doesn't go often.

Will   April 13th, 2008 7:31 pm ET

Your a Baptist but your wife refuses to say last time you Clintons attended church….you must be good Baptist.

andrea, Illinois   April 13th, 2008 7:28 pm ET

Maybe both Clintons shall look at the bible once in a while:

- DON'T CHEAT

- DON'T LIE

Billary are really not a good example for what church goes stand! They have no morals and integrity!

Ross in MD   April 13th, 2008 7:25 pm ET

The Clintons can have the support of people who think things are O-kay!

The America that is bitter and wants change will go with Obama, thank you.
