Watch a clip of Sen. Clinton's Sunday press conference.

SCRANTON, Pennsylvania (CNN) – After a weekend spent making direct appeals to gun owners and church goers, Hillary Clinton said Sunday a query about the last time she fired a gun or attended church services "is not a relevant question in this debate” over Barack Obama’s recent comments on small town Americans.

“We can answer that some other time,” Clinton said at a press conference held in a working class neighborhood here. “This is about what people feel is being said about them. I went to church on Easter. I mean, so?”

Clinton described the furor surrounding Obama’s remarks as “about how people look at the Democratic Party and the Democratic Party leadership.”

“We have been working very hard to make it clear that we have millions of Democrats who are church going and gun-owning,” she said. “And we are tired of having Republicans, or frankly our own Democrats, give any ammunition to Republicans because what happens then is Republicans take advantage of the situation.”

She called the current imbroglio “an important moment for Democrats” and challenged Obama to further explain what he meant by his comments, which she reiterated were “elitist and divisive.”

Pressed on whether she truly believes Obama is an elitist, Clinton called him “a good man,” but recalled the narratives of the 2000 and 2004 president election.

“You don’t have to think back too far to remember that good men running for president were viewed as being elitist and out of touch with the values and lives of millions of Americans,” she said.

Wake up voters in Indiana;North Carolina;Pennsylvania.Obama's remark about people in rural areas being wrong about their concepts on religon;economic views can not go unnoticed.Do you want someone like this to be President?Us ruraal people still have strong faith in God and America. Our ministers don't use the Lord's name in vain;curse America in their sermons like Obama's minister. l

nadeem   April 13th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

Hillary is two faced, and totally out of touch with Americans.

Obama comes from a single mother home, lived on food stamps, grow up in part in the third world. Give me a break!

He gets the frustrations of rural american because he is close to them, not because he is looking down on them.

Folks in PA will judge for themselves.

RU Kidding?   April 13th, 2008 2:50 pm ET

So, Obama is actually NOT elitist, even though I like to say he is in every stump speech I make, and the problem actually is the view propagated by the opponent that "good men running for president were viewed as being elitist and out of touch with values and lives of millions of Americans." This is the most pathetic double-speak any candidate has produced to date. She's either a coward, and won't say what she really thinks about him, or the truth doesn't matter when it stands in the way of political expediency and making points with superdelegates. If she's such a fighter, why not fight the inevitable Republican maneuvers instead of providing them with more video clips of her agreeing with them!

bill in pa   April 13th, 2008 2:50 pm ET

The only furor about these remarks is coming from her fat mouth. Let's see, she's drinking whiskey and claims to have shot a gun. What's next is she going to buy a pickup truck?? This is one country boy that knows when someone is trying to claim something she isn't for votes. And you think Obama is wrong???

andrea, Illinois   April 13th, 2008 2:50 pm ET

Maybe she should go more often to church….. then she would remember "YOU SHALL NOT LIE"

When ever she is getting asked a question that's uncomfortable for her to answer she either laughs stupidly or it's an irrelevant one.

I honor Obama's way of not using the same dirty tactics as the Clinton war machine, but at some point he should hit her back hard. There is plenty of stuff to be said about her

OlvrWhit   April 13th, 2008 2:50 pm ET

I watched this press conferance, that CNN did not even cover live. Out of all the questions asked, they use this as a headline….I find that strange since Clinton spoke clearly on many topics. Is this CNN's attempt to take the heat off Obama? I think so..

Why not shed some light on Obama's real comments made behind closed doors. Or say, look into his connection to three terrorist, Bill Ayers, Bernadine Dohrun, and Rashid Khaldi and how they are still close friends to the Obama's.

If you explore those relationships it may shed light on why Obama feels that middle american rural voters are bigots.

Alex knows it all   April 13th, 2008 2:50 pm ET

A word of advise to Sen. Obama. please move on. Do not keep talking about the issue. Follow Sen. Clinton on this. How she moved on after revelations that she lied on Bosnia issue and the hospital issue. He evasive demeanor on her tax returns and Columbia trade deal.
If you stop talking about, others will also.

We all knows that Sen. Clinton is a divisive opportunist and very shroud politician. She will sell her mother if it gets her to a better place

Waaaah. I want Obama to win. Waaaaah. Hillary is a big meany. Waaaah Waaaah. Hillary is better than Obama. Waaaaah. Hillary or McCain. Waaah. Vote for Hillary!

Ron   April 13th, 2008 2:52 pm ET

Hillary is showing EXACTLY what is wrong in American politics. SHE KNOWS Barack is not an Elitist, and yet she will try to make it sound like he MAY BE because of his poor choice of words a week ago. This is very much like the way she answered the question as to whether or not Barack was a muslim…Her answer..AS FAR AS A KNOW HE IS NOT. What doe that imply?? Only ONE thing..I am not ABSOLUTELY sure…WINK>>WINK>> America. She surely would not have said that about Senator McCain…There is NO SHAME to her GAME..She uses the OLD SCHOOL word games and America needs to move on to the next level and Hillary just isn't it…

Alex H   April 13th, 2008 2:52 pm ET

She needs to have a meeting with her advisers to see how she can best avoid getting caught before she can answer that question.

Wait… so you're sick of giving ammunition to Republicans… wow… is she completely oblivious or a complete liar… or… I'm so mentally twisted by that spin.

Wow, just wow… she'll slam him and then say 'there's nothing wrong with it'. That's like saying 'there's nothing wrong with being a Nazi, racist, bigot' … gee thanks for saying nothing's wrong with it but you're still calling that person a Nazi, racist, and bigot! It's underhanded and a backhanded apology/complement/repentance(I don't know any more… ;) How do we let her off saying these things??

Anybody who goes and worships, another idiot stood on a Dias need their Heads Examined. There is no God. But, there is a freeloader who calls themselves a Reverend, Vicar, Priest,. Even Popi the Pope is an Idiot. Freeloader.. What world do you people live in?

Mary - Independent   April 13th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

Too much time is being wasted on petty comments between the Democratic candidates. It is a disgrace! Why can't these candidates focus on critical issues that are hurting America. With all of this nonsense that is going on that is dividing the Democratic party, how can the voters know who will take care of this country?

William   April 13th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

Hey Hillary, it is relevant. I'm not into guns and don't go to church, but others think that kind of thing is important.

Why is it so hard for you to answer a question with a direct answer? What are you trying to hide? If someone asks me when I last went to church or shot a gun, I can answer. Directly.

Why can't you? You dodge far more questions than sniper bullets in Bosnia. Far more. Why is that? People can't trust someone who always hides who they really are.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   April 13th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

Hillary needs do something to stop the division that is being created in the democrat party which is giving the republicans ammunition. She needs to stop accusations that some democrats are helping republicans. I think Hillary is way off course with those kind of remarks.

Ian   April 13th, 2008 2:55 pm ET

So she's one of those annoying people that only go on Easter and Christmas and take up all the seats. The last time she fired a gun was probably when she was under attack from the snipers in Bosnia.

Jon   April 13th, 2008 2:55 pm ET

Keep proving Obama's comments apt Hillary. Keep making his point for him. His point was basically politicans use "wedge issues" like guns and religion because they know people aren't going to believe politicians will do anything about the important issues.

And what are you doing? Jumping on this because many people don't believe you about anything anymore. You're already commencing with the weaseling by trying to call him evil elitist and good man at the same time. Say what you really mean or shut up Hillary.

Tym   April 13th, 2008 2:55 pm ET

It isn't relevant. The issue isn't about whether people SHOULD go to church or have guns but how to TREAT those who do.

No matter who you are, you should be respectful of the views of OTHERS.

I'm surprised that Obama doesn't know this yet.

canuck   April 13th, 2008 2:55 pm ET

I think if she really wants the Dems to win, she should stop siding with the Repubs and defend Obama. These ongoing attacks are a direct result of hurt pride. I personally like her, but i don't think she would make a good President. All I'm saying is "Hillary, who's side are you on?"

cnn, please post my comment.

Interesting   April 13th, 2008 2:56 pm ET

She is right. It is an issue of perception of the Democratic party being out of touch with the heartland. Obama is Kerry and Gore revisited. Obama like Kerry and Gore need to take his butt back to his Rezko house and not try to run for President.

You thought the democrats learned that after 2006 Congressional election. Obviously not.

Janel, St. Paul, MN   April 13th, 2008 2:56 pm ET

It is ridiculous for Senator Clinton to describe Senator Obama as an elitist. He is the only candidate in touch with the American people. He is the only candidate with a solid vision of our future. He is the only candidate who is ethical and honest in his speaking.

Okay, I admit he may have used the wrong words to describe his view of Americans. . .but he admitted this and explained, I believe, very eloquently his views.

Senators Clinton and McCain are "elitist" in their lifestyles and their out-of-touch relationship with the average American.

Anonymous   April 13th, 2008 2:56 pm ET

Can you say "Clintonspeak?"

Kate in A2   April 13th, 2008 2:57 pm ET

*YAWN* Why is Hillary still harping on about this? Oh, that's right: anything to keep the focus off of CAFTA, Penn and the $800,000 on the Clinton's joint tax return.

I'm bitter, many are bitter - Obama just is telling it like it is and people recognize it.

berinde, san francisco   April 13th, 2008 2:57 pm ET

What a pathetic creature is Hillary Clinton! She is ready now to sell all her principles (if any) for votes… Stay ou of polictcs! You "bitter" it…

Cody MacCabe   April 13th, 2008 2:58 pm ET

She says that the last time she went to church isn't relevant, maybe it isn't relevant because she can't remember the last time she went to church.

Sarah   April 13th, 2008 2:58 pm ET

I can't believe some of the people who are now calling Hillary a drunk and pro-NAFTA, because she had a shot of very good Canadian whiskey. They screamed for her tax returns, and now are jealous because of how much they made in 8 years. They call her "gun-toting" because she has learned to shoot a gun.
There is nothing she can do to make some of these people happy, I would like to see their justification if the tables were turned and it were their candidate that were in her shoes.
We need to get it together and realize that all of these candidates are people just like the rest of us.

Ridgeway   April 13th, 2008 2:58 pm ET

She's familiar with guns? I would imagine then she know what type of rifle the sniper was using in Bosnia when she came under fire.
It's of great comfort to know a potential Commander in Chief would know their weaponry.

Herman LA, CA   April 13th, 2008 2:58 pm ET

This just goes to show what her motives are and any one who can't see through the eye of this woman is either blind or wearing a mask over their eyes.

What a shame that American politics with these darn Clintons have stoop to this level and her supporters should really be questioning her and how she would govern this great country of ours.

Obama 08!!!

Gayle in NYC   April 13th, 2008 2:59 pm ET

Obama an elitist? There's a new photo of the senator serving hamburgers to his staff. He is using tongs. I rest my case.

Alex   April 13th, 2008 3:00 pm ET

Its amazing to me that she would state Obama is "elitist" and then turn around and say she's only saying it because the Republicans will say it in the Fall. So Hillary has joined the Republican attack machine?? I guess it doesn't surprise me from someone who cashed in on her husbands presidency for 109 million bucks…that's what I call "elitist".

Jermaine   April 13th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

Hillary Clinton knows fully well what Barack OBAMA meant, she is the one being division and she follow the Republican line of attack on OBAMA in calling him elitist. The fact is he is neither elitist, nor anti-religious. Hillary Clinton went on to say it didn't matter if she went to church, well when she inject herself on this issue it does. Her comment of "SO", sounds every bit like Dick Cheney and it proves again that Hillary is very much a Republican in Democrats clothing. The question is and should be "WHO IS THE REAL HILLARY". Hillary believe because she can dish out dirt against the Republican's she can win the Presidency, I beg to differ. Hillary she be very careful, because in the end what she will face is a "BLACK" ELECTORATE who will not support her candidacy should she cripple OBAMA as she is intent on doing!

HILLIARY LIES   April 13th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

I believe most Americans are smart enough to know that Obama does not look down on them and he was making a point as to how we feel when we are bitter about what is happening in this country. The Clinton campaign thinks making a big thing out of the way he said it will get a win for them but I hope it backfires on them.

Election Observer from Germany   April 13th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

Sorry but this hole debate about Obamas (true) "bitter" statement is just laughable.

If this debate has a negative turnout on Obamas polls then i think the brainless took over the country.

Nicholas A. Rhoades   April 13th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

So now, not more than 24 hours after Mrs. Clinton refered to Obama as an elitist, is she saying that he is not an elitist? This is just another example of Mrs. Clinton engaging in political opportunism. Without even waiting to consider what Mr. Obama meant by his words, to seek clarification, she immediately went into attack mode, in every effort to gain an advantage over her opponent, regardless of the truth of the matter; and the press, eager to garner ratings is inadvertantly allowing her (and Mr. McCain) to fan the flames of this issue without stopping to consider what Mr. Obama meant when he made those statemnts, and whether or not there is any validity in them. Is this really what we want in a leader?

Ken, LA California   April 13th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

Obama is the only candidate left who did not grow up privileged. He is the only candidate running who has lived among the world's poorest people. He is the only candidate who grew up poor, and worked directly with marginalized communities and stood up for their interests. Obama's comments, when examined in their entirety, in fact show a great deal of empathy for rural Americans, and reflect what voters have been telling him as he interacts with people in these economically distressed communities. The fact that Clinton and McCain, and their supporters, just like Bush did before them, have taken his remarks out of context, and spun them in the worst possible way. It also amazes me that Obama has not used this controversy as a rallying cry to change the way we do politics in the United States. There is no way that I will vote for either Clinton or McCain in the general election. They are both no different from Bushco. Please print this CNN!

What a video!! WHAT A DISGRACE TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE!!! I sincerely hope that BARACK OBAMA WILL GO AFTER HER TONIGHT about going to church, using guns, Bosnia, NAFTA, and Penn!!! Her campaign started such a fury about his church and what is the old saying — What's good for the goose is also good for the gander!! Bottom line is, no matter WHAT she says or does in these last few weeks of primary elections — SHE IS ON HER WAY OUT!!

As a white woman around the same age as Clinton, I say SHAME ON YOU!! What an absolutely ridiculous point to debate and even more ridiculous to call Obama "elite". We both know we never have faced the difficulties Obama has faced on the way up the ladder and you know, as well as I, we never will, so I don't think I'd call him one of the elite rather one of the successes of America. Do you think asking Obama to explain what he means by the word bitter will deflect attention from all the lies you have told throughout this campaign? I surely hope not. Hillary,

If you went to Church or paid attention to the message during your yearly visit you would know that Obama's message was scripturally correct..

James 2:5-6

5 Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?
6 But ye have despised the poor . Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?

1) Obama doesn't need to issue any further explanation. His original comments were clear and concise - and more importantly, true. Spin it all you want, it's fact - kudos to him for having the guts to come straight out and say it.

2) Could she be any more of a hypocrite? Can't even remember the last time she fired a gun or went to church? She's not an elitist with her $109 million over the last several years?

Another nine days and she's done…I can't even wait.

HILLARY CALLING OBAMA AN ELITIST IS JOKE!!!!!!!!! Last time I checked she was worth $109,000,000 and Obama just finished paying his student loans.

How can someone who has lived in the Governor's House, White House or Chapaqua/Senate for the past 20+ years claim to be in touch with the common man? She i sonly in touch when it is politically convenient for her.

My guess is that this will come back to bite her just like every other time she tries to attack him (quoting other politcal speaches, having her representatives speaking to other foreign governments counter to her messages…..)

Dan J   April 13th, 2008 3:16 pm ET

There are a lot of people that don't go to Church or fire guns, and they are appalled by Obama's candor. It's because while they have different social practices, they know that others go to Church or go hunting for other reasons than "clinging" or "bitterness."

A candidate can do what they want, but it's insulting to criticize what the motivation is for people to go to Church.

That is relevant. She always make up stories. Hillary said that her father taught her to shoot guns and hunting ducks. Her refusal to answer the question is an indication that she is lying again. This woman keeps giving and giving lies. The republicans are going to use all these lies if she won the nomination.
The fundamental questions are whether she was old enough to learn how to shoot a gun and whether she had a license while hunting ducks.

The comments recorded by Sen. Obama occurred in the mansion of Pakistani millionaire Sohaib Abbasi. They also include the remarks: “When people tell me they’ve all stressed about racial discord, well, you know, try slavery for a while,” which were interestingly not published along with the "bitter' remarks. One might note that Sen. Obama's father came from Kenya and attended Harvard University.

If Clinton is going to dog Obama about his comments, which he admits was not up to par, then she should answer the people's questions. Senator Clinton has been far to secretive since day 1, and from what I have seen Senator Obama has been more open and has had better communication with the people.

Is the Bosnian sniper fire, Bill's cashing in on the Colombian free trade, Bill again taking money, this time helping China target Tibetians and monitoring internet users, voting for the war, Whiterwater, lying to the public all not relevant? Hillary has been reduced to the lowest level appealing to fear and splitting apart this country even further. Get back to the issues. We need change. No more Clintons and their unfettered greed and ambition. They are not entitled.

Sen. Obama's comments were truthful. I think that Sen. Clinton has loss touch with the American people if she doesn't believe in the truth of his words. The American's are tired of all the lies from politicans these days. We see no end to the war, no solution to the economic down fall, and we deserve to know the truth. At least Sen. Obama is trying to be truthful to the American people, and acknowledging that these problems do exsit.

certainly wouldn't be so kind. Obama has so much baggage the
the republicans will tear him up in the election. If Obama is the

I guess this is just like her daughter saying we the American public do not deserve an answer to the character questions…. Even though this was all done in the OVAL OFFICE… On OUR dime… Hmmm…

I am surprised Hillary did not say it was none of our business…

In light of his recent remarks about small town America, more pieces of the puzzle emerge, providing a window into Barack Obama's character. While Sen. Obama's impressive rhetoric continues to be that of change and unity, his underlying attitude is undeniably elitist and condescending, resulting in greater division, not less. The more Americans have an opportunity to see the "man behind the campaign," the more they will realize that appearances can be deceiving. It turns out that unity is not a matter of rhetoric or manner but character and courage.

I am sure that the cause of truth has been advanced. The fear mongering that Bill Clinton admonished in 1992 is being encouraged by his wife who can now belt them down with the old old boys who must be over joyed that she has shot ducks. Bill Clinton and Obama were right when they said that fear overcomes self interest and insecurity leads to taking strength from carrying a gun. Go ask any gang kid why they want to carry a gun and they will tell you "for protection." When people don't have power they turn to enhancers. Hillary instead of improving understanding panders to this element.

Janice-TN   April 13th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

What do you mean Hillary that it is not relevant the last time you went to church? Who cares about the last time you shot a gun?How can you speak about Christians values if you are not on yourself? How can you speak about whether or not people in rural America are bitter or not if you are not willing to listen, hear and then understand? How can you paint yourself as a role model, a leader when our children can see you in a bar surronded by men drinking? You need to remember that the person who is able to answer that ringing phone at 3 a.m. will be the one who is sober.

I think Hillary is handling this situation perfectly. It's time America takes a step back to take a second look at Obama. It's funny how biased the media is when a scandal comes around Obama and how they blow it off. Hillary and Obama have both said they "misspoke". And look at how much it hurt Hillary's campaign, and she didn't even offend Americans directly, like Obama did! It's amazing. I think Obama needs a scandal to show his true colors; it would be a good test for him. I'm a Hillary supporter, but i am impressed at how Obama handles himself when these scandals crop up. He needs to be in the direct line of fire for this, because it was offending what he said. This could kill the democratic party in November. It's make or break for Obama, or else Hillary is walking away with the nomination and the Presidency. Good luck guys…

let me get this right. it is "elitist" for obama to have said what he did regarding guns, religion, etc, but it isn't elitist of clintion to think that the voters are dumb enough to believe her when she says that she opposes that colombian trade deal that both a high ranking member of her campaign and her own husband(and therefore herself) have profited from ? she obviously thinks that people are stupid to believe all of her misrememberances, misstatements, and shock that people she is involved with could be doing these things. please.

Hillary says Barack can't win if he appears elitist. I don't believe that he does appear elitist. He just refuses to dumb the election down to stereotypes and soundbites. We're smart enough to understand beyond Clinton soundbites. We are smart enough to understand context. Barack may not have chosen the right words to make his point but at least his words reflect reality… He did not mis-speak to the point of creating a fairy tale sniper situation.

What's relevant is that the Scranton, Pennsylvania newspaper has backed Obama. So much for her hometown ties. That doesn't appear to be "relevent" either.

What's relevent is who isn't divisive and opportunistic. The Clintons haven't changed one bit.

I am a Pennsylvanian and for Hillary Clinton to allow Obama's persona/character to go tarnished is uncomprehensible. She was asked at a campaign stop today in Scranton and by the media commentors, "you know Obama, do you believe him to be an elitist and do you believe that he demeans others beliefs and values. (guns and religion)" She responded, "what he said was elitist and demeaning." Society needs to be more persistent to get an response regarding her knowing him personally and whether she knows him to be an elitist and demeanors people's beliefs and values, with a "yes" and "no" answer. Also, with other senators, governors, and mayors who knows him. If she responds with a no, it shows that he did misspoke and may have artfully said it wrong and was rightfully to have apologized to potential supporters for any misunderstanding in what he meant to say with those who are upset. This shows a "spin" put on his words and therefore, we can now rid ourselves of this issue. Hillary will not answer with a no, because it illustrates credibility & trustworthiness issues, judgment in making and addressing this as an campaign issue, questions her true character about doing anything to get elected and shows that she is the one out of touch with Pennsylvanians and other states. This needs to be addressed by the media and other gov't official now, so that, Obama persona is restored before the upcoming primaries. This will reflect an equal treatment in a call for a more responsive answer similiar to Obama being asked to clarify what he meant.

The last time she whent to church or fired a gun is NOT important.
What is important is the candidates view on those subjects.
Because views and opinions will influence their decision making process.

As far as Obama is concerned, his views and opinions appear to
be heavily influenced by his pastor of 20 years.

His vocabulary serves as a window to who he really is.
It has betrayed his inner thoughts.

Obama an elitist? He didn't earn $20 million dollars last year or $109 million over the past 7 years. He isn't supported by a millionaire wife. He did finally earn a million by writing two books that allowed him to pay off the enormous student loan debt that he and Michelle incurred to get an education.

As a black woman, I wonder what people are thinking about. Is Barack so important to the black community, and to the media that wants a Dem to win the election sooo bad; that they will turn their heads when the elitist, racist Obama speaks his hate?

Take a look around folks- the apple never falls too far from the tree. If it looks like a duck, and walks like a duck….well, you get my point.

Shame on Hillary and McCain, shame on them! By the way, Hillary also attended an Ivory league school - Yale, and recently release hers & Bills income of ovre $100 million; how many taxpaying Americans can claim they went to Yale too and earned $100 million (and even more, off the backs of the taxpayers to support post-presidential functions of Bill Clinton?)

But yet she is the same woman that is capable and level headed at 3am to answer the phone. Good for Hilary on her answer concerning last time she went to church or carried a gun. I'm a praying person and everytime I pray at home or where ever I maybe, I feel like I've been to church. I don't like guns personally, but if I am to have my traditional food, I support the need for guns.

You don't have to carry a gun or go to church to prove your personal values.

Some poorly chosen words by a candidate who is sympathizing with struggling Americans does not show someone who is out of touch. Saying the struggling people are optimistic rather than angry minimizes the economic realities that some are facing and distorting her opponents words for political gain. She is the one who gives the ammunition to the Republicans. She is doing it right now.

Arkansan in Little Rock   April 13th, 2008 3:37 pm ET

Once again, this flap will show how Clinton is just another political opportunist. An avid gun control advocate herself, Clinton now has become a gun lover. Likewise, her background is about as elitist as one can get — Wellesly undergrad, Yale Law School, silk-stocking Rose Law Firm (oldest west of the Mississippi), board positions on big corporations that treat their employees poorly, and so on.

When this all shakes out, she will end up with egg on her face. She is the Great Pretender. Obama will weather this and get back to his message of change. OBAMA 08

Hillary Clinton is just a rank politician in the worst sense. She will say anything to get votes. Guns? The strictest gun laws we have came under her husband's term and she was a cheerleader for those laws (Brady Bill, etc). Who is she trying to kid? She has no scruples when it comes to memory (Bosnia sniping incident that did not happen) and is the real 'elitist' who thinks everyone is too dumb or short-sighted to catch her in her deceptions. She is a liar and that is not a moral person. Recently she has pretended to be against trade agreements like Nafta while the record shows she spoke in favor of it back when it was crafted by another Clinton. Further she says she's against trade deals with Columbia while one of her top aides works on behalf on the supporters of it (Mark Penn). She has no morality except what serves her at the moment.

I believe that the so called "Christian Right Wing" members are not going to vote for Clinton or Obama, regarless of the Republican nominee, so whether Hillary goes to church or not is probably not relevent. However, it says something about her ability to reach out and change things. That, Obama has wired, regardless of relevency.

Ilona Proud Canadian   April 13th, 2008 3:40 pm ET

Sen. Clinton refuses to answer tough questions. No, it is much better to keep the voters focused on the claim that Sen. Obama is "elitist".
Well I don't think Sen. Obama is the one who made $109million recently. Sen. Obama is not the one who lined his pockets with $800,000, from a speech given to promote free trade and Sen. Obama is not the one who is power hungry. Now tell me truthfully, who is the "elitist"

Sen. Clinton is the one who boasted about her lessons in shooting.
She is the one who jumped on Rev. Wright 's band-wagon non stop. But now that she is being questioned on the topics of guns and church. "THESE QUESTIONS ARE NOT RELEVANT".

I hope that CNN will do some reporting on this issue, just as they are on Sen. Obama's "bitter" issue!!!!!

The honest to goodness truth is that Sen. Clinton is the true "elitist"

Raponikoff   April 13th, 2008 3:40 pm ET

I'd hardly think that a woman who couldn't recognize the truth if it ran over her should be the last one telling someone else they need to explain themselves we are still trying to figure out why she lied about being under sniper fire and why her husband a week later came behing her and told more lies to try to cover up the lies she had already told. There seems to be a common theme going in the Clinton campaign and it sounds a lot like that them is centered around "lies".

Everything I've seen him talk about and his community service he performed for the steel workers is the complete opposite. Obama has talked more about personal obligation and getting involved. He is a Christian and is not scared to be. Everyone I have heard talk about his fund raising speech are people that are rich and would like to put him back in his place. Give regular people a little credit of being smarter than falling for the same old political tricks.
Obama didn't say it just right but it was the elites from Washington that jumped on it and said we got him now.
We are smarter than that out her in Indiana and know Obama is our only hope of making real change by bringing people together. If we let people pick apart what is said then nothing will ever change.
As for me I know that all these politicians are elites. And Hillary's $109 million dollars is more evidence than a few words that were twisted as a gotcha

Teresa (NC)   April 13th, 2008 3:43 pm ET

It's not "relevant" at this time because she'll need to consult with others to come up with a truthful answer.

Robin, Tennessee   April 13th, 2008 3:43 pm ET

Hillary,Hillary, whats this I hear about it not being relevant the last time you went to church it is very relevant to us Christians maybe drinking in the bar surrounded by men that are not your husband is whats relevant to you. Barrack Obama is the right man with the right judgement for America . Obama 08

Ed, Santa Fe, NM   April 13th, 2008 3:43 pm ET

OH HILLARY… evasive again, huh? It's YOU who are not RELEVANT.. Go home and count your millions.

Wow....   April 13th, 2008 3:44 pm ET

Is Hillary serious? This chick is so funny to me!!! Simply question… When was the last time you went to church or shot a gun? If you are going to speak about religion and not go to church, something is very wrong with this picture! Now that gun incident is another story…. She should avoid all guns comments after her Bosnia mixup!

PS
Was she taking a swipe at Al Gore with her mention of the 2000 president election? Just asking!

Dan from Ohio   April 13th, 2008 3:45 pm ET

“You don’t have to think back too far to remember that good men running for president were viewed as being elitist and out of touch with the values and lives of millions of Americans,”

She has a point here, and it seems that she is again trying to convince superdelegates that Obama will be characterized as elitist by the Republican attack dogs. I don't think this argument will work for her though, as she could be characterized the same way (Wal-Mart board member . . .).

Either way, I think this year, rather than letting the Republican smear artists make our decisions for us based on who we think they would smear more or less, we should pick the candidate WE want and expose them for the frauds they are. The fact that the Swiftboat Veterans for Truth were allowed to have the influence they did, when some of them admitted they lied and others admitted they did not serve with John Kerry, is disgusting.

Let's stop being afraid of them. It is time for them to be afraid of us.

Democrats in '08   April 13th, 2008 3:45 pm ET

Disgusting. At this point Hillary is just trying to make Obama into an unelectable candidate regardless of the consequences to the party. She's perpetuating an image of Democrats that helped seal Kerry's fate (and Gore's) solely because she thinks it will help her short-term goals, and along the way she's reinforcing the image of herself as a unabashed liar. It's time to end this race before she brings down the entire party and gives away not only the presidency, but congressional seats across the country.

Brian   April 13th, 2008 3:45 pm ET

Valid points. But I'm tired of Democrats feeling they have to choreograph their remarks so as to not "give ammunition" to the Republicans.

Isn't there something to be said for a new politics, one where we worry less about "giving ammunition" and more about speaking truth and promoting progress?

Obama's willing to give it a shot, I think. It's why he just keeps saying things that "smart" politicians don't say. Clinton, on the other hand, doesn't want it.

It's a legitimate difference of opinion — do we take a risk and hope for something great, or play it safe and hope for another so-so Democratic administration?

Starxzilla   April 13th, 2008 3:46 pm ET

So let me get this straight… she and Bill, lie and play double agent on Nafta, 'misspeak', embelish… but the real issue is Obama expressing the valid sentiment of people with whom he's come in contact, and is relaying their ideas… and THATS the scandal??? How does that make sense?

Mark   April 13th, 2008 3:46 pm ET

Hello Hillary,
Rather banking on how your opponent (maybe poorly) worded his findings, could you base your campaign on something your own? When something comes our of your own, they are ususally lies, fabrications, and deceitfullness.

John S   April 13th, 2008 3:46 pm ET

Hillary Clinton- just one of the boys- at $10 a year and a New York Mansion, buying a Senate seat in a state she had to connection with, campaigning for Barry Goldwater, etc. ad nausem- She's no elitist- No her big fund raiser this month was courtesy of a foreign citizen glitter boy g a y popstar who has a British Royalty title- is that even legal? I thought foreign donations were against the law. Now she's just a beer drinking, gun toting guy- Give me a break…

John   April 13th, 2008 3:46 pm ET

STOP BEING SCARED OF REPUBLICANS

Note to the DLC:

We refuse to abandon our principles to get elected.

Clearly Hillary doesn't.

gene   April 13th, 2008 3:46 pm ET

You go girl. It is about time someone has been able to expose the real nature of this person. He is an elitiest, who has never done a real day's work in his life, but talks about his great love for the working people, but before the well healed liberal left wing (where he is appealing to them for their money), he demeans the many people he wants to vote for him. The anti Hillary bashers will be all over this in short order. Many of these bashers are no more then paid volunteers, who have scripts to work from. Many unions employee these tactics. The SEIU claims to have 250,000 members in Pennsylvania. This is also the same union that was fielding all those volunteers in Nevada and California.

Greg in Canada   April 13th, 2008 3:46 pm ET

McCain and Clinton FIRST attack Obama because he is a church-going Christian and NOW they attack him as being anti-religion?
Talk about serious inconsistencies…

Ravi   April 13th, 2008 3:47 pm ET

Hillary Clinton is hardly one to talk of elitism with her high powered fund raisers and $109 million in income. I find it rich that she even attempt to project herself as so populist when her campaign has approached this Democratic nomination race with a snobbish attitude of entitlement.

She is clearly trying to deflect attention from her many ineptitudes and the underlying thrust of Barack Obama's message - on the economy. She lied about holding reservations to NAFTA (as her White House records clearly indicate), and both her husband and Mark Penn have benefited greatly from lobbying initiatives for the US-Colombia FTA.

The truth is Hillary Clinton will grab at anything to lower Barack Obama - if he should ever have the misfortune of sneezing in public, she'll probably have her campaign spin that as an issue about the frailty of his health or some such nonsense. Thankfully she doesn't appeal to voters with a brain - who form the majority of voters.

Monroe   April 13th, 2008 3:47 pm ET

Hillary and Barack have different views of what politics should be about. Hillary's strategy for years has been to hover as close as possible to the "center" and pander to as many people as possible. In contrast, Barack wants to appeal to our better angels, transcend the divisive issues and bring people together around common purposes. Instead of operating within the partitions created by wedge issues, he wants to unite us around more significant concerns like economic fairness. Meanwhile, Hillary is still thinking inside the box.

Bob   April 13th, 2008 3:47 pm ET

I am a 62 years old, southern white male, independent voter. For the past 37 years of my life, I have been seeing the same politicians around who are more concerned about their interests. This year, I thought a change would be made at the white house, reason I am supporting Obama.
The more I see Clinton, the "bitter" I become to know that she wants the White House so bad. Sorry! if she is the democratic nominee, I will make sure Mccain gets my vote.

Jack the Dog   April 13th, 2008 3:47 pm ET

She claims to have gone duck hunting, too. Perhaps in Bosnia?

Obama's remarks may have been unartful. But I'd rather have an occasionally unartful Obama in the White House than a lying, wacky, sleazy Clinton.

Obama or McCain in '08.

Marcia   April 13th, 2008 3:47 pm ET

She's a snake oil saleperson, and only goes to church when it will get her more votes.

Pander, pander, pander. It won't work.

WY   April 13th, 2008 3:47 pm ET

Hmm … "not relevant" …

It's interesting how when the questions are directed towards her, the issue(s) is(are) suddenly "not relevant."

And finishing an answer with "I mean, so?" is completely disrespectful, not to mention arrogant, and oh yeah, elitist.

carrie   April 13th, 2008 3:47 pm ET

if u went to church, you would know that u are not supposed to lie, backstab, point fingers, decieve, take advantage of people and best of all,you should not RUN FOR PRESIDENT,WHEN U KNOW YOU CANT WIN.

Pittsburgh Native   April 13th, 2008 3:48 pm ET

I was born and raised in the Pittsburgh area and I know a lot of people who have been hit hard by the failures of the Bush and Clinton administrations. However, the Bush Administration is the worst.

I did not get the insult from Senator Obama. I knew what he was saying and I know how my friends and relatives feel about the economy and the shaft we have been getting.

I agree with Sam from Indiana who wrote: "If you have lost your job and are going into foreclosure, you are bitter. PA people should be very mad. And they should never forget that the Clintons were the ones who supported NAFTA. And what about Columbia and Bill Clinton and their $800,000 gained from it?"

It is laughable that Senator Clinton would call Obama an elitist when she is worth over a hundred million dollars and he is worth less that $900,000 dollars including book royal
