Watch the mix up Monday.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – It’s an unfortunate verbal stumble that’s plagued politicians, pundits and journalists — including CNN — this campaign season: the sound-alike names of the world’s most-wanted terrorist and the leading contender for the Democratic nomination.

Monday, the top executive of The Associated Press was the latest to make the slip. Dean Singleton was addressing a question to Sen. Barack Obama about the strategy he might use in a part of the world where many believe Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden is still based.

“…Can you imagine shifting a substantial number [of troops] of Afghanistan — a substantial number to Afghanistan where the Taliban has been gaining strength and Obama Bin Laden is still at large?” Singleton asked the Illinois senator at The Associated Press annual meeting.

Obama himself corrected him, to the delight of the crowd. “I think that was Osama Bin Laden,” he said.

Singleton apologized for the gaffe, but Obama said the correction was becoming habit by now: “This is part of the exercise I've been going through over the last 15 months — which is why it's pretty impressive I'm still standing here.”

Folks, until Hillary Clinton and her demeaning comments are off the air, and voters realize that the true Hillary Clinton is the candidate with the wagging finger pointed at you and the condesending annoying voice coming your way, she will continue to hand the election to John McCain. Pack your bag Hillary and head to the Big Apple.

John   April 14th, 2008 8:24 pm ET

Well, he is a radical muslim with a middle name of Hussein! He hates white people. He was mentored by the idiot, Reverend Wright. What do you expect?

Hans Meiser   April 14th, 2008 8:14 pm ET

Obama handled this incredibly well, and it shows that he's quick on his feet and not easily swept up.
He isn't perfect by any means, but he speaks the truth even when it hurts.
Hillary is a despicable liar and nothing else, she will throw anything and everybody under the bus.
McCain's doing a lot of flip flopping lately and I feel it's because he is not willing to lose votes because of a firm stance; see housing market intervention (do nothing -> we'll help) for example.
I really believe Obama will do this country good and steer us in a better direction.

Ziggy   April 14th, 2008 7:53 pm ET

Ronald Reagan once said about Third World countries ruled by cruel dictaors that "people deserve the leaders they get". I guess that, looking at all that's going on today in American politics, in a country in recession, when people have been lied to over and over again by the same governments that got them in this situation in the first place, and nothing ever changes, I guess we can say that we Americans deserve the type of government that has been in Washington and has made us "bitter" and "frustrated". And the problem is that we still don't know that we are bitter and frustrated.

Dan   April 14th, 2008 7:52 pm ET

To the writer who says "who cares, Obama has muslim roots, admit it" He has never denied his father was a muslim, he had denied that he is. My grandfather is a lutheran, my grandmother an episcopal. My parents were raised in both churches, but I am a proud bapist. I think people can make religious decisions in this country without excuse. Get over it. Apparently, you can't. Maybe you'll be happy with Goldwater girl, Hillary.

Let's not fall for the okee-dokee, and let Hilly Lieton off the hook for her Bosnia Sniper fire Lie like she wants us to do. She is still accountable for her lies. I see a pattern here every time a primary comes up she is on a what obama said crusade. Always a couple of days before the primary she is leading a don't think about what I said, think about what he said mission.

The Obamanites are vehement in their support of Obama. Anyone who doesn't share their views are labeled traitors or fools. This is very disturbing to me - it seems that Obama has a cult following, not loyal citizens.

THIS MAN HAS THE HEART OF A BLIND GUNFIGHTER!
Barack Obama has had to put up with enough crap for the last 15 months for 4 Presidencies. He has done it with Grace and Dignity.
He has shown America what a REAL leader looks like.
I am PROUD of him and his wife Michelle.
When I look at the nasty, hateful, slimy remarks made by the cowards hiding behind the keyboard, I regret that they too will be saved by President Obama's policies. Some of these "bloggers, pundits and posters" would do well to get some fresh air and see what REAL citizens of a Democracy think. I have seen some of the most vile inhuman things written by these cowards about two very decent people they don't even know. I am ashamed for our country when people read this filth. And you know who you are…you should be ashamed for writing it.

David Outlaw   April 14th, 2008 6:47 pm ET

If I was Obama I would bring up what her so called beloved husband Bill did while he was in the white house as President and his affair with Monica Lewisky and constantly lying about it, to all of us in this great country and more especially his wife and daughter. The only way I would vote for her is if she would drop Bill like a hot potato, cause the white house is our property and is most sacred. Plus he used the governor's mansion to have an affair with jennifer Flowers and then he used the white house. Makes me wander if she got in what would keep him from doing it again. SO LETS KEEP THE WHITE HOUSE SACRED AND LETS VOTE FOR OBAMA. And I thank you.

It is his wife that is not proud to be an American.

Concerned Voter   April 14th, 2008 6:09 pm ET

Obama is not a self-made man. He began his education in a prep school in Hawaii and then graduated from Harvard. He, nor the other candidates, for that matter, are in touch with the small or big town workers of America. I don't think that any of the slurs that have come from Obama's campagin, or Hillary's, or McCain's, or any of the blogs or listserves where their supporters post, are appropriate. Is this the best this country can do during an election cycle? Obama's only problem is that he told us he would run a different, more enlightened campaign, a promise that he has not kept.

The problem for Obama is not that he loses, but that he wins.
Once he's in the White House and faced with 2 million people losing their houses next year, rising unemployment, $5/gal. gasoline, and no one able to get credit anywhere, his followers will be throwing away all of those votive candles they've been carrying around for him.

People that say they would vote Mcain if Obama was the nominee are hypocrits. They are the same people that say they want the war to end and yet, are willing to vote for someone that wants to stay in Iraq for 100 years, someone that admited not knowing much about the economy. It is true that, during those trying times in our lives, we do, in fact, cling to our religion and other sustaining supports to see us through. I now understand more fully, 'Much Ado About nothing!" Ensuing, the media is making more of the "bitter" comment than they did about Clinton's Bosnia "snipper" lie! She told the lie on three different occasions. While I'm at it: Not only am I sick and tired of this back and forth between Obama and Clinton, I am also tired of hearing Obama needs: The white women's vote; the white men's vote, the hispanic vote; the Catholic vote. When is enough enough?

Steve, New York, New York   April 14th, 2008 4:32 pm ET

It is hard to believe that people are so hung-up on the name thing . . . though this comment makes me suspicious . . . .was this guy one of the face-less donors to the Clinton's HALF BILLION DOLLAR LIBRARY??

Who is the elitist? Come on - wake up, people!

jd   April 14th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

Obama you are Gracious and Dignified. You will win. Obama/08

Emma   April 14th, 2008 4:30 pm ET

Senator Obama gently corrected the questioner who used in name incorrectly. He realized that the questioner misspoke and he gently made the correction.

How heartless is Senator Clinton? She misspoke regarding her trip to Bosnia as First Lady. Maybe Senator Obama should have an add asking Senator Clinton why she can't give him the benefit of an error and move on. Perhaps we should add her running from gunfire on YouTube and play it over and over and over and over and over again!

Talk about real issues!

Rita Miller   April 14th, 2008 4:30 pm ET

For people who are supposed to at least a little bit intelligent, I find it hard to believe it's only a slip of the tongue. More likely, they aren't intelligent, just stupid and ignorant.

@americans   April 14th, 2008 4:29 pm ET

I like Obama! Very smart and quick witted; caught that 'stumble' right on it's track and made the correction immediately!

I applaud Obama for actually listening to questions from reporters and voters and responding appropriately, unlike the 'scum' Billary who is very devisive and throwing dirt at any opportunity she gets!!!

OBAMA '08!!!

I can't figure out if the Hillary people are angry, stupid or just racists…who knows maybe all 3. Whatever the case it's pathetic that the only way to build up your candidate is to tear the other one down! But so be it, Hillary has chosen her path and after all this is the kind of hate and divisiveness that the Clintons seem to thrive on!

SayNoToHillaryBillaryCheslaryClintrous   April 14th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

This people make a statement like this purposely and make it like a news to decive and creat fear that is sick and disgusting. the the stupid media goes and exaggrate the statement.

Just tell Barack that my 86 year old, virulently Republican mother, is proudly announcing to everyone she is voting Democrat for the first time in her life..She thinks Barack Obama is just what this country needs!
PS She lives in a small town in Washington state with a horrendous level of unemployment and very bitter citizens.

Emma   April 14th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

Wake up citizens in Pennsylvania. Four years from November, do you want to wake up to $6.00 a gallon gasoline, more jobs overseas and more families facing foreclosure? How many of you will admit that you voted for John McCain when you end up trying to feed a family of four on a family of three budget? You have an opportunity to speak up, please use your vote wisely.

Senator Clinton and McCain represent the status quo. Do you want change you can believe in? I do.

I can't afford four more years of the same kind of politics. I will be bankrupt!

Roger   April 14th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

I don't see anything wrong with what he said.

Matt   April 14th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

A clever distraction by the Obama campaign. Get someone in the pro-Obama media to make an Obama-Osama gaffe, have Obama whine that it's standard practice, he's still the underdog, blah, blah, blah, and try to distract from Obama's elitist remarks regarding rural Americans by orchestrating a grand speech. The voters see through you Obama.

This is old new, the direct and indirect Test that Barack Obama, is experiencing, but I guess it like Hillary Clinton, with the BOSNIA, SNIPER FIRING-OOP'S, Plus the continual support with the News Media constant Rhetoric, before the Public. It is Sad That Hillary Clinton, does not get the same Attention, when she LIED, but I forgot it was a misstatement, because she was tired and even Bill Clinton try to help, it only made Matters Worse. It is like the children's Story on Lieing, the more the boy LIED, the Bigger his Nose got, and Every One Could SEE THE TRUTH!

You Clinton supporters ASTOUND me constantly.

"Obama has muslim roots… why doesn't he admit it?"

During childhood, his mother had him attend a muslim school for two years and a catholic school for two years.

What more is there for him to admit?

Darth Vadik, CA   April 14th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

Real people for real man: You, sir or madam, are the idiot.

The poster's name was Sean, and he brought up a fair point.

And a person, for the record, cannot be "a sin."

Please take the time to proof your own posts before calling another poster an "idiot."

Linda   April 14th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

Jim, how can you support Obama if you are so filled with hate towards /senator Clinton and those of us who support her? It is the Obama supporters who are making a mockery of this whole election. Yes, one should be judged by the company they keep — not by people with similar sounding names. Obama is no Osama — but he is the leader of political neophytes and has the endorsement of Wright and Farrakhan. That is what's telling!

P Graber   April 14th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

A vote for Hillary Clinton means never having to say you're sorry to the citizens of the United States of America or the people of the world.

YOU HAVE A ZILLION PEOPLE BEHIND YOU (ALL OVER THE WORLD TOO!!!)

OBAMA 08!!!!!!!!!!!!

Noah   April 14th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

The slip of the tounge was not serious. However, the fact that Obama is using his mistake to attack Hillary is.

He did not call people bitter, as the media and his campaign has spun this. He called people bigots, who cling to guns and religion. He did this not on the campaign trail, but behind closed doors to wealthy donors, who thought his remarks were funny.

He refuses to apologize, instead making three differant excuses over the weekend and now attacking Clinton with lies about her record.

Obama continues to get away with his "little clusmy, I regret" remarks.
The media is scared to deal with this, and Obama is to arrogant to apologize.

Get it people, he said people are bigots…He needs to own up to his mistake and not try and blame others. His supporters need to stop bashing Clinton for calling him out on it.

Wanda Reed   April 14th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

Somehow, this whole political season is getting sillier and sillier. Candiates are acting more like children all the time. I wish we would all grow up and act more responsible and elect a candidate who is willing and ready to act on day one. I am to the point of not caring who wins anymore. None of the candiates are acting very mature anymore.
Or their supporters for that matter. How strange we americans can be.

Kel from AL   April 14th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

Obama is always one to not worry about petty things, and that's one reason he has my vote.

Can you imagine if Hillary's name could be messed up that easily? All we'd ever hear is her whining about how, "It's curious you always mess up my name. Why do you do that? It must be Obama's fault, that's so curious. [shrill laugh]"

Go, "O"! Obama 08!

Deb, Texas   April 14th, 2008 4:14 pm ET

Obama has a big heart and it disturbs me that people can't look beyond his skin and really see him for what he really is. He has been polishing rude comments since DAY ONE and no one (the media) commends him for that. However, God is in the myst and he will prevail. America needs to wake up and realize that IT IS TIME TO COME TOGETHER.

vince - phoenix   April 14th, 2008 4:14 pm ET

Why give importance to what appears to be a simple mis-speak?
In fact I'm wasting my time, having read the piece and now commenting on it. Let's get on with real issues facing us, not such non sense!

Hello tempest, meet teapot.

An Agnostic Democrat   April 14th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

Yes, people do make mistakes, but why is it when they lie (Hillary/Bill/ Chelsea) we accept it ,and when they make mistakes or truly misspeak (badly chosen words) we play endless reports and news reel loops of them out of context for the next week and beyond?

This would be the same media and news teams that brought you the Iraq war by none other than George Bush and Co. without doing half the work they are currently doing to capture these ridiculous sound bytes, missteps and misstatements from the Democratic primary.
Wait until the MSM misses the clues we are invading IRAN!

neutral   April 14th, 2008 4:10 pm ET

The truth will set Obam free:We need fresh minds, new things, new idears.

Deb, Texas   April 14th, 2008 4:10 pm ET

This is really sad. These reporters are not making mistakes - these things are done intentionally. There are a lot of race haters in this country and the real haters are surfacing including the media. I am white, black people have been voting for white people all of my life. Now that we have a very good black candidate - hatred has surfaced and that is SAD. Thanks to Bill and Hillary Clinton.

Seattle for Obama   April 14th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

his parents gave him that name..people get over it. It is not like he was born as said that is what I want or changed it. He came from Muslim roots. I know you all went to the churches, temple…etc that your parents did and made your own choices as adults. He is now a Christian of his own free will and chose not to change the name his parents gave him. get over it MY GOD!!

Robin Wagner from ct   April 14th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

OMG here they go Obama Osama .
Sad his name is his name . I don't know what to say . This is just low down dirty snit .
Hillary has no right to say hes a elitist . Because McCain and Hillary are richer that Barack Obama .
Hillary with 109 million dollars .

cettel   April 14th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

Okay, so the press wants President McCain –

So, why doesn't Hillary just offer herself to be McCain's VP?

The aristocrats would love that ticket!

She's a Republican anyway (a former "Goldwater girl"), at least as much as she's a Democrat; and that would be a perfectly balanced ticket.

It would also be the only way Hillary could salvage any further career in politics.

people need to wake up. HRC owes $$$ for campaign ads. she donates $$$ to her own campaign. she lies about sniper fire ( which I would remember very clearly ecspeically with my child with me) is ready for the 3 am phone call ( however was tired when she "mispoke" about bosnia (lied I do mean) people quiting her campaign left and right and people part of her campaign going behind her back to the columbians (including her own husband) crossing party lines stating " only she or McCain are ready to be president ( to me leaving us dems to are on devises is she doesn't win the nom) NOW TELL ME WHY WE WOULD WANT HER RUNNING OUR COUNTRY I have my own bills to worry about then to have her running up more to GWB's tally that we as taxespayers would have to pay back. she can't even run her campaign with owing money and having key people around her going under cover.

OBAMA 08 - 12

Texas4Obama   April 14th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

Senator Obama's responses to all of the questions this morning were brilliant!

America is going to be VERY lucky to have a person of this caliber in the White House in January 2009.

b   April 14th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

you people on here, by this i mean this posting are insane, totally insane.

Ellie   April 14th, 2008 4:04 pm ET

Sen. Obama I'm sure is way ahead of this game when it comes to his name. He surely wasn't born yesterday!!

Sen. Obama is accutely aware that his run or Presidency would mean a very close scrutinization on everything about him, his name, his family, etc. YOU take all these issues into serious consideration BEFORE you annouce your are running for a political office.

I think this just proves just how immature and hypocritical the media and the Clinton supporters can be on the silliest of issues.

The media is FOCUSED on one thing and that is to bring "chaos" in everything it reports on whether it's truth or crap. They are in the business to deceit and spin the truths to their financial and political advantage. It behooves me to think that they are above reproach.

Janice   April 14th, 2008 4:04 pm ET

I'd rather have a president who gets mistakenly called the wrong name by the press.

Than a president who really doesn't seem to know the difference between Sunni's and Shi-ites.

O8AMA   April 14th, 2008 4:03 pm ET

This guys has overcome so many insurmountable obstacles…People think that the press is against Hilary…when your only quality is declaring yourself a fighter while hiding in the shadows of your husband…and you fight everything, everybody, everywhere…you shouldn't complain. Barack is about bringing people together and lifting people up and not tearing them down. How can you not love this guy!

Carolina   April 14th, 2008 4:00 pm ET

That'll probably will confuse people world-wide, over and over again,

sean   April 14th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

let me guess…the new "narrative of the week" for the Clinton campaign is: "you see…you see….even the AP can't see the difference between Bin Laden and Barack….he's completely unelectable!! tell all ye supder delgates, that guy that's leading in everything is unelectable, i tell ya!"

:eye roll:

peacenow   April 14th, 2008 3:56 pm ET

Obviously, the journalist didn't mean to offend, and Obama didn't make a big deal out of it. CNN, we have more crucial concerns you should spend time reporting on.

Obama SPIN KING   April 14th, 2008 3:56 pm ET

who cares. Obama has muslim roots. why not admit it? I have never seen anyone so ashamed of their middle name. Anything to get the nomination, i guess. Maybe Obama is like Micheal Jackson…. a little bit of plastic surgery and he is right there…

pj   April 14th, 2008 3:55 pm ET

this shows Obama's brilliance, that he doesnt create too much of a fuss about these issues and "mis-statements" but he does make a subtle point.

he is presidential, so much more than McCain or Hillary, who is just a nightmare of a politician.
