Watch Stephen Colbert on Larry King Live.

(CNN) – Stephen Colbert, the Comedy Central host who launched his own short-lived presidential bid last year — discussed politics with CNN’s Larry King Monday night. Some highlights:

On Bill Clinton: “I think that he’s a rogue operative that they’re having trouble shutting down. …He’s a totally separate entity unless, of course, we’re talking about the time that he was president and Hillary Clinton was getting experience by being his wife.”

On the Pennsylvania primary: “I’m a kingmaker. I just want to help the people of Pennsylvania decide who I think they should vote for.”

On Chris Matthews: “He’s probably running for Arlen Specter’s seat in 2010.”

On the Iraq war: “Certainly, in a time of war, there should be no questioning of our leaders and no questioning about whether a surge is or is not successful. We should start thinking more about how the war is feeling and less about how we are feeling about the war.”

Colbert is broadcasting his show, The Colbert Report, from Philadelphia all week. Barack Obama will not be a guest on the show, but wife Michelle Obama is scheduled to make an appearance Tuesday night. Obama’s rival, Sen. Hillary Clinton, is reportedly scheduled appear on the show Thursday.

Stephen Colbert, a great American or the GREATEST American?

karen from va   April 15th, 2008 12:25 pm ET

He's helped me endure this primary season! Now, if only he'd figure out a way to remove Hillary's microchip, the world would be a better place.

Ilona Proud Canadian for Obama   April 15th, 2008 12:28 pm ET

Tell me what is wrong with this last sentence?

"Obama's rival Hillary Clinton" is reportedly scheduled to appear on the show Thursday.

Democrats get a grip!

You should be fighting with your "rival" John McCain. This is absolutely preposterous. Please ask your Super Delegates to put a stop to Sen. Clinton's miserable kitchen sink strategy.

J.R.   April 15th, 2008 12:28 pm ET

Larry's effort to entertain Colbert's lame humor came across as awkward and forced. I found it painful to watch.

Reality check #1   April 15th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

Good Lord, Michelle Obama is going to be turned loose again? I hope they have her mouth taped shut, hard to say what will come out of it this time since she has been shushed for so long. What kind of angry display will she show this time?

Tim, Atlanta GA   April 15th, 2008 12:37 pm ET

I watched this last night. It was probably the most uncomfortable thing I have seen on TV for a while. Colbert was cracking his characteristic jokes over and over and King just didn't get it. He kept thinking Colbert was serious! It was even worse than the appearances by John Stewart and Bill Maher.

Scott, Wichita   April 15th, 2008 12:40 pm ET

They should have let him run…
We need someone with a sense of humor in the White House.

None of the current candidates has one…

Colbert-Stewart '08!

He was hilarious! King was eh…..

Eric   April 15th, 2008 1:05 pm ET

You know, i just can't really get into Colbert, he is way too liberal…..

T L   April 15th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

Michelle Obama is the reason I will not vote for Barack Obama!!! Barack Obama himself seems ok, but Michelle Obama says things as inflammatory as Wright. Well, if you can tell a man from his wife, what is Barack Obama hiding? At least the Bill Clinton knows how to talk to the prime ministers of other countries. I am not sure if Michelle Obama will be capable of doing what a first lady does.

Jo Ann   April 15th, 2008 1:17 pm ET

Who cares what this guy think he is not running for president. He is not funny in the least. He just wants to up his shows rating.

Hillary Hickory Dud   April 15th, 2008 1:18 pm ET

OK so he is using this to but his name on the map with folks who never heard of him!
Hillary is a publicity stunt artist this is the same woman who supported NAFTA sending 44,000 of YOUR jobs overseas!
Spining Sen. Obama's words of truth in a desperate attempt for votes!
She disgust me! I'm So glad I saw who she really is before its too late!
I look forward to seeing Michelle - she is a working mother raising 2 kids on farrrrrr less than $109 million (less than 1% of what the Clintons made)!
I got the FACTS and my vote goes to Sen. Obama!

BK   April 15th, 2008 1:19 pm ET

I wonder what insults and names MO is going to call us to tonight. But don't worry the Obama supporters will explain to us what she really meant and then they will blame it on Hillary.

I used to be a Democrat   April 15th, 2008 1:19 pm ET

Its a mistake for Obama to send his wife instead of appearing on Colbert's show himself. Hillary obviously has way more sense than Obama.

annie green   April 15th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

Not since my college days have I seen a man who is brilliant, witty and who can sing "the Star Spangled Banner" a capella ? I'd like to cook Colbert a full course dinner - and I'm a woman who only makes reservations. He has influenced me to remember my Pennsylvanian (albeit elitist) upbringing and write him in for President!

Bill, somewhere in the MiddleEast   April 15th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

If Barack's spouse is going to appear on Colbert, why is Hillary appearing instead of her spouse??

It's always about her!!

Baby   April 15th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

All I can say to Hillary is stupid do as stupid does. You have nothing to gain by going on his show. The public have enough of your back tracking eye opening of trying to look good everything Obama say something that you think can show him up. Hillary that is a man. Didn't your mama ever told you that "whatever a man do in the street he will always be a man, but when a women do the same kinds of thing or worst" she is a " " whatever word you want to you. Ask Bill he knows the phrase all so well.

Colbert is so funny, I forget to laugh.

James   April 15th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

I hope Stephen Colbert asks Senator Clinton the following:

"You have previously stated that you and your husband differ on certain issues, namely free trade agreements such as NAFTA. You have also claimed your view is the correct one. Therefore, to put an end to questions regarding a potential conflict of interest, will you at this time pledge to return the $800,000 in lobbying fees Bill earned from the Columbian government?"

Delaware   April 15th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

Stop all the division about race and let us elected a good democratic president in the white house. Obama has no explaination to make to no body or no race group because he did not mention any race that was bitter with guns and religion. The comment was about Americans that live in rural PA and I far that I am concern there are all different races of people living in those region.
People come on! This is almost the end of the 21st century and you have not over these nonsense yet. America if you did not know is a country that is compose of many races of people and I do not think there is a single one of us that is more American than others.
Welcome back Anderson.

DE   April 15th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

Hillary Clinton is exagerating her experience and her trip to Bosnia by putting more than there was to the story. At 60 there is no way you can lose your memory unless your brain is dead. These are all lies; there was no snipers fire.
Anyway what is the trade deal with Columbia is all about. You cannot go and have trade deal with country that do fallow US policies. What is the next trade deal for clinton?May be Iran, Cuba, Lybia, Syria,Sudan, or communist Korea.

Trying to get CNN to explain the new delegate count. Clinton is up one and Obama is down one. This is a turn of two delegates. Fox reported that a Montana super delegate endorsed Hillary Clinton on Monday. If this was the delegate it would mean that a former Obama withdrew his endorsement and changed to Clinton. This change of mind came as a result of the "guns and God ' comments

John Smith   April 15th, 2008 1:45 pm ET

This issue is "not" about winning as Hillary would have all of us believe. Let me give you this:

Let us say Hillay wins and becomes the President of the U.S. Be honest with yourself,

1. How many Republicans will be willing to carry out her agenda?
2. How many people will she be able to bring together across the parties to get anything done?
3. How many Republicans will immediately start to plan to run against her after 4 years?
4. How many "old and new scandals" is this nation willing to undertake again?

You see, I am over 50 years old and have continued to follow politics all year round:

It is not about winning, it is about been able to govern!
It is not about having soultions, it is about been about to carry them out!
It is not about being a president, it is about being able to hold the "moral torch" and to bring the people together.

Hilllary cannot do any of these things, period. As Regan once said, people get the type of "government" that are… of them. We have made bad judgments over these years, and this is last chance, I believe, that God has given to us to redeem our levels of ignorance.

Mr. Colbert truly understands the nature of our totally wacked out political system here in the USA. And the impact of our dysfunctional news system.

He should have a place in network TV, maybe even in place of the network nightly news.

Rick from NJ   April 15th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

Maybe Michelle will explain her misstatements for her husband.
Why hasn't Sen. Obama apologized?

It's not okay to have a man not apologize for his elitist attitude and it's not okay for a man not to apologize for supporting a pastor with poor views of our country and our former first lady.

This is bad and very serious.

ml   April 15th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

it is just plain comedy, nothing else ……… right?
So we laugh, and forget …….????

gene   April 15th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Colbert has already invited Hillary and she has accepted. I think he will treat them same. He should be carefull with Michelle as she appears sometimes like she wants to bite your head off, plus that very angry person look.

Deb, Texas   April 15th, 2008 1:53 pm ET

He's got the right one going on his show, Michelle. She is not going to play with him. He may think he tells it like it is - so does Michelle Obama.

Alice   April 15th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

It isn't surprising that Hillary would go on the show. She needs to connect with the younger voters that are the Colbert Nation. Obama already is strong in that demographic, and needs to focus his efforts elsewhere.

Edana Popp   April 15th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

Some advice for the Larry King producers: when you have a funny guy on, keep him in the studio with Larry. This was a dud interview because of the set-up.

hello   April 15th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

Do I see a pattern over heare by CNN.
if you look at all tickers you will notice that CNN closes the comments as soon they get negative for OBAMA and positive for Hillary.
and it is same pattern in reverse order.

Independent   April 15th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

He is…AMERICA, and so can you!

gigi   April 15th, 2008 2:02 pm ET

CNN, I have been listening to your questions all day, about Sen. Obama's "bitter" controversy. This is like two contestants both calling tails (or heads) on a coin toss.

What exactly do you mean by "will they (remarks) hurt him (Obama), or will they help Sen. Clinton". Is this some kind of double talk? It seems to me that you are asking if he loses both ways. Sorry if I am misunderstanding your statements.

john williams san diego, ca.   April 15th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

a two bit kind of comedian. He has his cult of slackers and that's all.

Oscar, Rio Vista, CA   April 15th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

Michelle Obama is a really wonderful person and I am looking forward to seeing her on Colbert's show tonight. She has been campaigning continually for her husband and thousands of people come out to hear her.

People who write negative things about her are just showing their ignorance. And if you want to bring up the "proud" remark as your reason… that just makes my point valid. If you cared to hear everything she said and why she said it then you would understand what she meant.

Jonathan   April 15th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

I'm supporting Hillary which is why I can't wait to see what Michelle Obama does. I can only hope she actually answers one of Colbert's questions.

Kris, Pennsylvania   April 15th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

TL, are you serious? You would decide who to vote for based on your opinion of someone's spouse…

Well, at least I know you won't be voting for McCain (…talk about baggage! Check out his old lady's history!!)

Putting your foot in your mouth is one thing, but Michelle is actually the only one of the three spouse's who hasn't committed a serious crime in her lifetime. (She also happens to be a brilliant women.)

PA takes a stand!   April 15th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

Maybe Michelle will talk about her husband's memory loss over being at Rezko's house.

he should be ashamed for lying… AGAIN….. and again, and again.

PA takes a stand!   April 15th, 2008 2:14 pm ET

In a moment sure to irritate the presidential campaign of Sen. Barack Obama, the senator's name came up again in the trial of his one-time fund-raiser Antoin "Tony" Rezko. The testimony put Obama at Rezko's house for a party whose guest of honor was someone Obama has said he can't recall ever meeting.

Rezko is charged with influence-peddling and shakedowns in connection with Illinois state government. Obama is not charged with any wrongdoing.

Monday, as morning testimony was nearing the lunch break, Rezko's defense attorney, Joseph J. Duffy, was still plowing through his seventh day of cross-examining the government's star witness, Stuart Levine. Duffy, who has been methodically trying to establish instances in which Levine has lied to the government, asked Levine about a party held at Rezko's house in honor of an Iraqi-British businessman Nadhmi Auchi, who has been convicted of fraud in France — where he is appealing his sentence — and is suspected of doing business with Saddam Hussein when Hussein was ruling Iraq

bernice   April 15th, 2008 2:15 pm ET

TL, you probably have not heard her speak, she is quite articulate. Her faith in her husband and country is very strong. Unfortunately you like a many others do not do your own research before opening your own trap.
Go Michelle and Sen Obama!!

Kentucky   April 15th, 2008 2:18 pm ET

Who cares what he thinks? This is just a planned event to help Obama. CNN is lost all its credibility . We are going to see more MCain Democrats than ever before if Obama wins the nomination. He can't win this fall. He is rude and so are most of his supporters. They are so scared Obama won't win that they go online everyday to talk about Bill and Hillary. I don't think we need these anti-AMerican haters in Washington.

Maxine   April 15th, 2008 2:22 pm ET

Doesn't even deserve a comment, considering this guy is stupid.

heartlight 3, Maui, HI   April 15th, 2008 2:24 pm ET

If you read some of the commentaries about Obama from Hillary supporters on these blogs, you will understand why Michelle might not be proud of America. If you had people saying those kinds of things about you and your husband, how would you feel? I am ashamed of some of the hatred expressed in these comments an I'm not the one who wrote them.

Emma   April 15th, 2008 2:37 pm ET

Colbert is a comedian. What gives him the credibility to determine who the find voters in Pennsylvania should support?

We are in serious and desperate times and I do not take the state of our economy as a joke. There are thousands of Americans who will be put on the street and unable to feed their families. Do you think they care about Colbert? How has he supported those families in Pennsylvania facing foreclosure or a family of four only able to feed a family of three?

Get off the comedy scene…………I could be facing bankruptcy nexxt week or next month or even next year.

McCain's economic plan is a joke. He talks about tax free gas…..why not get Exon or BP to lower there gas prices for the next five years. They have made lots of money and they could afford to help the American public. Tell Exon and BP that by lowering their gas prices, consider this as their tax cut.

If we don't pay taxes, what happens to our roads and bridges? Do we wait until we have a bridge collapse as happened in Minneapolis? How many Americans must die? McCain is out of touch.

Please, please talk about issues that matter to the everyday American who is facing enormous challenges.

Mike   April 15th, 2008 2:42 pm ET

MY QUESTION IS WHY ISN'T OBAMA'S LATEST GAFF BEING TALKED ABOUT ON HERE?

HIM GOING TO THE PARTY AT REZKO'S AND RUBBING ELBOWS WITH CRIMINALS (STEWART LEVINE) ETC…

SOMEONE HE CLAIMS THAT HE DOES NOT RECALL MEETING?

OR OBAMA'S SHADY LAND DEALS WITH TOM REZKO?

Colbert is hilarious, and his satiric overtones are spot on. This appearance on LK wasn't quite as funny as the last time Colbert came on LK as himself. Even Stephen ColberT is hilarious.

PLEASE FORGIVE ME, CNN, for I have SINNED. I apologize for whatever I did to have EVERY one of my comments blocked.   April 15th, 2008 3:26 pm ET

(please , please… PLEASE post this??) PLEASE?

There are many things that make me proud to be an American. Like the freedom to say what I want, just as those who have a differing view have the right to express THEIR opinion.

But there are a few things that make me HATE America as well. And "HATE"……. is what makes me sometimes HATE America. (and NO, I'm NOT gonna leave… YOU leave..) then maybe America wouldn't be such a HATEful place!!!

The HATE displayed throughout this campaign… the HATE "played" upon throughout this campaign… both, covert and overt… is a shameful thing to watch. People accuse the first African American candidate (with a legitimate) chance of becoming a party nominee), of playing race, when he AND HIS WIFE have done ALL they could to run on ANYTHING "BUT" race… To be a candidate that TRANSCENDS it.

WHILE THE STRATEGY OF THE OPPOSITION (both democratic and republican) IS TO PLAY 'UP' RACE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE… (the republicans have gone so far as to commission a "study" as to just how 'far' they can push race WITHOUT turning off voters. — who the hell DOES this kind of thing). answer: people who will use fear, prejudice, biggotry, and hate as dividers TO HOLD ONTO POWER.

have you NOT noted how QUIET the likes of Reverend's Jackson and Sharpton have been, overall…. WE "KNOW".. that it is TOO easy to be pulled into the gutter of politics.. we have seen it over and over since the late 80's. I know this will be dismissed, (or even never make it to post..((I seem to have upset a moderator somewhere..)), but this DIALOGUE 'has' to be had. These words will be dismissed as just some liberal who should leave America or love it. These words will be dismissed by the very people who MOST need to read them with an OPEN HEART AND AN OPEN MIND…. Alas… were that the case.. there might not be a NEED for words like these to be written…

Since it seems that an EXTRAORDINARY "MAN" is being ravaged from both within his party, and without…… Since it seems that ONCE AGAIN….. "HATE"….. will rule the day, and again.. our country.. then there is NOTHING to lose in TELLING people to TAKE an "HONEST"

at youselves… internally, and externally… if you are OK with where your mind is… where your heart is… where your soul is… then so, be it.

If you have searched yourself and you are NOT ok with these things.. then take as hard of a look at Senator Obama, as you did yourslef. and realize…. and KNOW….. that America is THROWING AWAY… the opportunity to be led by truly a ONCE-IN-TWO-GENERATIONS type of leader. ALL because…. of….. HATE !!!!

Just like he skipped that Black Union thing because he was so desperate to win Ohio and Texas, by dumping millions of dollars on TV ads. Or, he's afraid that he might misspeak on Colbert's show.
