Obama laughed off charges he is an elitist.

WASHINGTON, Pennsylvania (CNN) – Barack Obama said Tuesday he was "amused" by accusations he is an "elitist" in the wake of the 'bitter-gate' controversy.

"It is true I am amused about this notion of elitist," Obama said, citing the fact that he was raised by a single mother, lived off food stamps, earned scholarships, and had to finance his own law school education.

"[Michelle and I] lived for the first 13 years of marriage up until three years ago, in a three bedroom condo without a garage," the White House hopeful said. "So if you live in Chicago, that means you are scraping ice every morning."

Hillary Clinton has called Obama "elitist" and "out of touch" for remarks he made at a fundraiser where he referred to some Pennsylvanians as "bitter" people who "cling to guns and religion."

During a veterans town hall near Pittsburgh, one man said that the way the word "elitist" had been used against Obama.

"As a white person, this term [elitist] the way that it is being used against you, it isn't far from uppity and I think the Clintons are getting away with something that they must be called on," the man said, adding that he thought the controversy would continue until someone told Clinton she was "close to prejudice here, this is wrong…"

The Illinois senator responded by blaming politics and the "silly season" for the controversy, but told the questioner he did not believe there were "racial overtones" to the recent attacks.

Obama just paid his student loans off 4 years ago — ask Clinton when she paid hers off.

She's a joke!!

I think its interesting that someone who is worth $100M and used to live in the White House has the nerve to call a man who was once on food stamps elitist.
She needs to come right pout and say hes an uppity negro. Thats what she means after all

Steve   April 15th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

just because you are black, raised by a single mother, scrape ice off your car, or any of those things does not mean you are not an elitist. He has been making millions of dollars a year the last few years and has fame thrust upon him instantly.

Those are all things that can change you into an elitist quite quickly. I think his comments really do give us a feel for how he thinks. Relevant or not he has to take his lumps just like everyone else when they say something stupid.

Being raised by a single mother (with rich grangparents no less) is not an answer to everything you do and say incorrectly.

Kel from Bham, AL   April 15th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

At least Obama pays off his loans. Clinton's campaign owes millions!

She must think she deserves to not pay off her own debts, that sounds more elitist than Obama to me.

Clinton is like a Vulture, preying on whatever scrap of irrelevant information or twisted fact she can find. This is getting stupid. I can't wait for Obama to be chosen as the Dem's nominee. Then the healing can begin..

Obama 08!

You may fool yourself Obama, but not America. You knew what you were saying to the people of Pennsylvania. How rude, & insulting. Then, to top it off, you 'made light of it'…….basically laughing about what you said to them.

America does not want a president who slams the people.

Lost our vote

Clinton's made $109 million and they are still asking *us* to finance their campaign? With all that money, you'd think they could afford to do this all on their own, so why do they need our donations? That sound elitist to me.

The CLINTONS are a joke. They have more than enough money to pay off their debt on the campaign trail (especially those debts owed to small businesses) but opt to ignore these little guys. Based on what we know about their past, present and can infer about their future, they should stop throwing "big" words like "ELITIST" around.

Go have another shot of wiskey, dear Hillary. You're going to need it when Obama kicks your butt.

Jim Shimmer   April 15th, 2008 3:59 pm ET

Obama is no way an elitist. The elitist are Billary with 109 million $ of income and McSame who owns 8 hours and is millionare and his wife is super rich..

We always let the rich rule us and then we complain. We are responsible for what is happenig to this wonderful country.

Wake up people, choose Barack Obama.

Desiree   April 15th, 2008 4:00 pm ET

How come if anyone says any thing against Obama, they're racist?

Michael, VA   April 15th, 2008 4:00 pm ET

I know human nature. You are what you say in private. You show your true colors behind the scenes. You say what you truly believe when you are comfortable with the people around you. This combined with the Rev. Wright issue and the house dealing with Rezko has me very concerned with the trust factor of Obama. I fear this is going to haunt him in the General Election, and then 4 more years of Republicans. I am starting to feel Clinton with all her baggage has a better chance. At least her baggage is known. There is just a looming feeling with Obama that has me uneasy.

April in Texas   April 15th, 2008 4:00 pm ET

Obama is real! He GETS IT. I don't know about most americans but I have 109 million reasons to believe Obama is not an elitist. Where Hillary lies about Bosnia then laughs it off if unpatriotic. I think Hillary and John McCain both need to look in the mirror before labeling another.

Obama 08

akaDoug   April 15th, 2008 4:00 pm ET

Hillary is the one out of touch! This whole "bittergate" is way overblown…very typical of this quick sound bite and drama media! Obama isn't perfect but he is a world better than either Clinton or McCain!

Anytime now we will be hearing from the angry and/or racist Clinton supporters! They have a right to be angry their candidate blew a perfect opportunity by running a horrible campaign and lying to try to appeal to a few people! Looks like it backfired!

Skipper   April 15th, 2008 4:00 pm ET

I could give a darn about how much money either of them has in the bank. I'm more concerned about who has the political clout to actually affect change on capital hill. Methinks Obama is not that candidate.

Another case of something taken out of context. Has anyone bothered to listen to the entire speech to see that what he said was true in the context of the entire statement.

Once again, our wacked out political system is showing it's true colors.

RJL for the USA   April 15th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

The CLINTONS are a joke. They have more than enough money to pay off their debt on the campaign trail (especially those debts owed to small businesses) but opt to ignore these little guys. For Susan of MO -

You obviously did not hear all of Obama's conversation when he was discussing the people of PA and why they may have hard feelings. When you do, you can re-track your statement and an apology will do.

Justin, Chicago   April 15th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

This whole thing is a joke. It's not even worth discussing in my opinion.

Kelley   April 15th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

Fact1   April 15th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

Some of the news articles about Obama's gaffe this past weekend mention that his remarks were made at a private San Francisco fundraiser. What they fail to mention, that this private San Francisco fundraiser took place on Billionaire's Row at the mansion of the Getty's. You know…the BIG OIL, Getty's. Obama made private rmearks to his wealthy patrons figuring he was safe amongs his own crowd. He is an elitist and that's the least of his problems. Bet on it.

Sallie Mae   April 15th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

Yes, Hillary has done a lot for poor people; yet and still, she has shown that her "Clintonist" arrogance in politics is more a form of elitism than anything and is certainly even more repulsive.

Thanks for clarifying that you misspoke. We all do. Now get back to the economy it's killing me.

Stephen   April 15th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

Well if he says that he's not an elitist then it must not be true.

Just like how I'm the smartest man in the world. I've said it, therefore it must be true.

What Id like to hear from the pundits is that wealth is not a pre-requisite for elitism. I know people that are financially worse off than me and they are elitist, whereas I know people who are better off than me and they are not elitist. And when I hear the pundits start talking about 109 million, I know that they preaching to the lowest base of stupidity and they should be ashamed.

Anna, SW Missouri   April 15th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

I think the people of PA get it! CBS is reporting that Clinton cut her speech to just 5 minutes today because the people in the room were not paying any attention to her. Good for them! Maybe they are tired of Hillary's "uppity" remarks instead of actually hearing them say that they ARE bitter with the way Washington is acting like they don't exist.

Dem for Hillary   April 15th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

Clinton will do or say anything to get elected. I loved the Clintons when Bill was in the White House, but Hillary makes my skin crawl…and her cackle doesn't make it any easier for me to actually listen to her. But the problem is that she would rather tear down Obama than talk about the issues. Its pathetic.

But if she gets elected, I will vote for her over McCain - we can't have another Republican.

Obama '08. If not, then Hillary.

I find it silly and immature that some Dems will not vote for a Dem in the White House. We're on the same side people!

tom   April 15th, 2008 4:03 pm ET

There is no question that Obama's comments showed he is a bit out of touch with how small town folks think, but that doesn't mean he doesn't care or understand about their struggles. We don't need a President to relate to every tradition or practice we pursue, we need a President that can recognize problems and set about fixing them. The very thing I hate about Hillary is how she pretends to have a connection with everyone. Her accent and twang changes wherever she speaks and she has a B.S. story to "connect" to every voter out their. Hillary going duck hunting? What a joke.

I'd rather have a competant, honest President who will use his 8 years in office to get to know the people better while he serves versus one who pretends and claims to know the people and then spends 8 years ignoring them and doing what he/she determines is best without regard. We just had that. Hillary is a phony. I'll take the real guy. Obama at least says what he thinks versus spouting off B.S.

Tanya K   April 15th, 2008 4:03 pm ET

It is silly season in politics again.

B Welsh   April 15th, 2008 4:03 pm ET

Hillary needs to step down now before she ruins the Democratic party. if seems that she doesn't care about anyone but herself. It's been said that she knows she's gonna lose so she want Obama to be unelectable so she can run in 2012 against McKean, but what she doesn't realize is that the American people won't forgive or forget all the dirty things she's done.

Obama we all know. It is just the Billionaires and people with Hundreds of Millions of Dollars who want us all to think you are one.
Funny thing is IF they could read or use a search engine on the web they can find out your ENTIRE life’s story. Point is they do not or can't, BUT we are not that gullible and we can smell fear when it is around and BOY is it around THICK!
That is what you get for talking for and to the PEOPLE and not for the Billionaires and special interests!
Don’t back down from the Machine, no matter how hard they try. We are STILL waiting for the answers to the tough questions that Hillary owes us. It seems though that the powers that be don't want us to ever hear the answers they would rather focus on a single word slip-up instead.

The last thing this man should be called is "elitist"

mike   April 15th, 2008 4:04 pm ET

Obama should continue to respond this way because, although his comments were on the extreme side, this does not entitle someone like Hillary Clinton to label him as an elitist. That is just another politcal ploy that we have grown to expect from her. But I think he should continue to call her on this . Anyone who reports
109 million earnings and whose spouse takes 800 grand for his
work on Coumbian Free Trade and then tries to convince the public that she is anti-NAFTA is in no position to cast stones. Unfortunately, that is all she knows how to do. Oh yeah and shoot ducks!

Yeah Obama, a self-made, black man who has risen from poverty is an Elitist when Hillary Clinton (White Woman of Privilage, Ex-President's wife and multi-millionaire) and John McCain ( White Man of Privilige, multi-millionaire, son of 4-star Navy Admiral) are not Elitists? The media is just as guilty for trying to light a fire under this ridiculous notion as well.

freddie   April 15th, 2008 4:04 pm ET

I can't believe all this hoopla over someone speaking the truth. Of course, HRC does not seem to know what the truth is and things she can tell small town America how they should feel! Talk about elitist! I hope she keeps talking and talking about this…she is sinking faster and faster everyday. The debate will be very interesting tomorrow. She will come off like the out of touch shrew she is. It's unbelievable to me that anyone is still taking her seriously. Why is she helping McCain so much? I don't get it. She's lost it completely.

Johnjones   April 15th, 2008 4:04 pm ET

On last night's Daily Show, Jon Stewart made an interesting point about elitism. Essentially he noted that being in the "elite" was a good thing. Do we really want a President in the White House who isn't in the elite? Who isn't smarter, tougher or better educated than us? We've had a non-elite President for closing on eight years now. I think I'd prefer an elite one at this point.

Concerned Voter   April 15th, 2008 4:04 pm ET

Senator, your comments speak for themselves. You may not be the richest, but you are certainly not the poorest…even in your youth as the press would have it. Its not money that makes you elitist, it's what you are saying. It doesn't help that you are the most arrogant politician I have seen ever.

Senator Obama is to be applauded for running an ethical campaign and not getting in the sewage with the Clintons. He obviously had to answer back when the Clintons went to far in their accusations. I can't wait until this part of the election is over and he meets Senator McCain. Senator McCain will be confusing a whole lot more things than he is now and will definitely be showing what the press call his angry side.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   April 15th, 2008 4:06 pm ET

Hillary is an elitist and has been socializing with elitist all her life until she's out of touch and cannot identify who is and who isn't. Maybe one day, if she does get in touch, she will be able to identify Obama as well as millions of Americans as the non-elitist. Vote Obama.

Obama is not an elitist? Wonder how he can afford the things he can. I wonder why noone questioned him on the REZKO trial yet? We do not need anyone to look down on any of us, ' cause by doing so, he is not offending a few, but all of us.

Also, please explain why (i'm confused) you were living in a 3 BR condo when your wife was making 300,000 plus as CEO of one non profit and CFO of another corporation. Sometimes in life you just have to ask yourself "does this story add up"? In this case I think it's obviously NO!

JimmyBoy   April 15th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

Why would anyone that went to an elitist university like Harvard ever be considered an elitist?

How could someone that has had a silver spoon for so long be considered an elitist?

How could anyone who listened to the down to earth, nitti-gritty, common vulgar sermons of ex-Reverend Write for twenty years ever be considered an elitist?

Obama is just a down-to-earth kind of guy like all the young gun-toting, heat packing young blacks on the South Side of Chicago.(I been there.)

He is more like Hillary who grew up in Park Ridge, Il with a very low crime rate, a hardworking suburb. ( I been there. )

And he is just like the small town local yokels he referred do. (Been in a lot of small towns, I am proud to say. Live in one now.)

And this was obviously a mis-speak on his part(this Harvard graduate), because he would not say anything at all to lose one vote in Pennysylvania(Been there, enjoyed it.) because he needs them desperately.

GoodblesspresidentBarackObama   April 15th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

For God sake Hillary and her husband made 10M for the last 6 years and she calling Obama an elitist who just fished paying his student loan two years ago grow up with a single mom with food stamps.

What a joke she must not be as smart as I thought if she thinks she can fool the American people by this comments. Shame on you hillary.

Mia   April 15th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

Steve - please take a minute to get your facts straight. Barack Obama grandparents were NOT rich, far from it.

At how ridiculous some of the posts are. People should really get over themselves and invest in common sense!

gary   April 15th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

Barb Canada,

4 years ago Barack got the proceeds from his book, a little over a million dollars, not quite the 27 million Bill Clinton took in from his book and other proceeds, nor the 50 million he got talking on behalf of Columbia and the like, or the 31 million that went to Clinton"s "foundation" by helping to broker exclusive rights to the uranium mining in Khazakstan for his Canadian buddy. I don't think the Clintons want to get into an in depth discussion on where their money comes from.

Mary - PA   April 15th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

If Obama is an elitist as much as Hillary is honest.

Dave in NJ   April 15th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

This is truly amazing. Obama makes a true statement, perhaps put out using the wrong words, but real Americans agreed because they understood what he meant. It is sad that the media once again has looped something & ran it in the ground. Yet HRC can lie repeatedly, not answer the simplest of questions, keep Penn on board, not release 2007 tax filings, and still not be grilled by the media like Obama. It let's you know who the real elitest people are,HRC. If the supporters of HRC are so hateful and opposed to having an african american as president, then they deserve whatever befalls them. I guarentee them by the time Hillary or
McCain finishes screwing up this country, we all will be bitter, broke, busted and disgusted.

freddie   April 15th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

And another thing…the media is really making me ill on this one. They are all spewing the same garbage almost verbatim and it's really sad! Why don't they turn this around on HRC the way they should be…they all know he just bumbled his words up a little. And Hillary knows a thing or 2 about "misspeaking" and "misremembering" doesn't she? Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow seem to be the only members of the press who haven't lost their everloving minds!

kent   April 15th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

Bitterness is a reality. It may take root and grow when circumstances turn out to be worse than we worked for and expected. For the Clintons and their supporters the campaign thus far has not turned out as they expected. There are signs in the Clintons and their camp of bitterness having taken root. Their bitterness is directed toward Barack Obama. The root can either be removed or left to grow and never uprooted.

Elisabeth   April 15th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

If the quotation below is true Obama is not only an elitist he is a falce elitist ! "Obama at Rezko's house for a party whose guest of honor was someone Obama has said he can't recall ever meeting." Is that why he opposed the war in Irak?

ONLY an ELITIST would believe that the average American didn't know what the definition of that word is…in case you don't :a group of persons who by virtue of position or education exercise much power or influence e: a member of such an elite —usually used in plural <the elites …yup, that's Obama, alright…and i don't know what "antipathy towards others who are not like them" means either….fancy words from a fancy (albeit empty) suit

Or else, how could you blame us to cling to gun?

Very very bitter people from small town!

Hillary 2008

Robert from NJ   April 15th, 2008 4:10 pm ET

This has ended up being another media circus and we are all feeding into it. It's become sport rather than serious discussion over the issues. BHO is brilliant, highly educated man but he's no elitist and those who say they found offense in his remarks were either McCaine or Billary folks who had already planned to vote for their candidate. I would expect this from McCaine and the Republicans…and even think it would not be out of line for the typical hype given a campaign, but for this to come from Clinton, a colleague in the Senate and a member of his own party with a political philosophy, voting regard and an almost identical agenda on the issues smacks of ruthless politics. For Hillary Clinton, it's all about Hillary Clinton…screw the Democratic Party.

Sue   April 15th, 2008 4:10 pm ET

Don't worry Obama, we have your back. I am white, female and over 50. I find your opponent to disgusting to look at. She is brining in ognorance and fear rather tna discussing the issues. You have my support, both financially and in my vote!..you give us all hope to get away from the same old politics.

Brendan D, Niles, IL   April 15th, 2008 4:10 pm ET

That's it! I'm tired of it, so I'm just going to say it:

Anybody claiming to be a Democrat should not be supporting Hillary Clinton anymore. Those who are are either A) convinced a black man cannot win; or B) racists themselves. Period.

Jake, California   April 15th, 2008 4:10 pm ET

How is the small town comment racist? Did he say White people in small towns or asian or latinos? Didn't he say people in small towns?

It is these lack of understanding on the part of you Hillary supporters that have caused this woman her campaign….

You don't understand half the things you stand for or go against…
No wonder you are so bitter and won't vote for a candidate other than Hillary…yeah you. 20+% of you won't vote for Obama in the general elections. How else can you be described other than bitter.

Obama has done nothing to you. He just said lets practice hope and with that we can change our politics and America. All of a sudden you are Bitter against him. Why would you think that people in small towns can't possibly be bitter after suffering so many government failures?

Think again Billarians…..you are haters and don't seem to vote on the issues and common sense and love for America……You just want to see your Billary and as clearly seen, most Americans don't want her or them!

Debby   April 15th, 2008 4:10 pm ET

mndharmas   April 15th, 2008 4:10 pm ET

it is as though americans are on a self destructive path, news channels have been waiting for a guffaw from the candidates then a decline then more of the same. for once we have a leader with head on his shoulders not just ambition on his sleeves.
he has mobilized the nation, but no we must tear him apart and stay the mundane course of arcane politics were elections are decided by terms like elite , pro-life, gun control,
how that translates to the progress of the nation , I fail to comprehend . but the genius of the republicans ,Rove, says this is what the people votes for or against. Hillary agrees with him as well.
so should we hunker in for more unfair trade agreements long unnecessary wars, bad education system , because that is what washington doles out and that is how it will be for ever,
Since a candidate who deals with the problems of the people is deemed as condescending.
ironic , we have no freedom to chose in this democracy,
it can only be carl rove or hillary way .

our media, vauntingly irresponsible in giving info to people.

This whole thing is silly. Clinton lies about Bosnia and NAFTA and that's ok. But Obama makes one badly worded remark in a private setting and it's a big deal. I don't think it's going to work and Clinton should be ashamed of herself.

Hillary all the Way 08   April 15th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

Obama with his smug, arrogant attitude and his I was brought up such a poor guy baloney. Spare us Hillary supporters. We tend to see things a lot deeper than your Obama groupies do.
His dive into criminal types and radicals is a bit disturbing don't you Obama types think? How do you RATIONALIZE his hidden agenda's? The media has done almost no work on what he is all about in these realms. Strange, wouldn't you say?
I was brought up to trust someone with an important responsibility when they proved that they were capable, honest, enthusiastic, patriotic to the cause and straightforward. Is Obama any of these things? Why on earth should I vote for someone who I perceive to be a phony?
I'll write Hillary in if she isn't nominated. I won't vote for this slick operator on the minds of the American people. Is he really an American? I doubt it.

TAX TIME   April 15th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

It's national tax day, and in honor of this event Hillary Clinton's campaign began its conference call with reporters by calling on Barack Obama to release his tax returns from the late 1990s.

"Senator Obama, despite his rhetoric, does not appear to be abiding by the same standards that he has set for our campaign," said Phil Singer, Clinton's deputy communications director, regarding Obama's call on Clinton to release her tax returns. "He has refused to release his tax returns for 1997, 1998 and 1999, even though he was in public life during those years. And during that period of time he was accepting campaign contributions from lobbyists representing special interests, PACs, and even directly from corporations. We think that if Senator Obama is going to set a standard for our campaign certainly he should be following that same standard."

Sean   April 15th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

bob in L.A.   April 15th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

He is also not the "street kid" he portrays, or tries to portrray.
He lived for a period in Honolulu, He has lived with his grandparents in Kansas- neither is a bastion for urban youth violence.
His biography often times changes depending on where he is in the country. How is it possible for one person to have done all the things he claims with any sense of accomplishment in the time span of his adult life? Urban crusader, Harvard professor, state legislator and U.S. senator, author, family man- all in a matter of what- 12-15 years? It sounds like the kid with a dozen or so after school jobs- none would be of much value without the time to master the position.
Was he born a member of the elite? No. Has he achieved that status by actions and words. Most definitely.

brody Lowe   April 15th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

by saying that he's an elitist, it implies that anyone who voted for him is in the same boat. Well, I dare you to look at my life or the life of my friends who are voting for him and say that to our faces.

Andre   April 15th, 2008 4:13 pm ET

To all you idiots that think that an elitist can happen overnight, explain to me how Hillary can stay grounded with 109 million, or Bill with 250k a speech. Obama doesn't have 5 million to loan his campaign. I think that people who dislike Obama would admit that they were not going to vote for him anyway, and stop trying to fool us like "Bittergate" changed your mind. I am black man and I college educated, but since the economy has gone south I have been "Bitter" and I have found myself clinging to God as the source that will bring me through this crisis. Why does everyone have to make a big deal out of the truth. The truth shouldn't anger you it should make you free. If you trust more in your Smith & Wesson than you do your Government, maybe it is because every time you pulled the trigger it works, and everytime you look for the government to work it is broken. The Clinton's have shown themselves to be dividers not unifiers. Do you think that if someone would have asked Hillary a question about being racist or sexist, she would have said it was just silly season in politics or would she have said that it was true?

Robert Barnett   April 15th, 2008 4:13 pm ET

Let's see - we are trying to elect a president to rule the world's largest economy. Who ever it is better be the best of the best to get us out of the mess we are in. That would narrow the choice down to an elite few.

Anyway Washington is full of elitism and everyone there is elitist. The problem with most of them is that they practice the fact that they think they are better than the rest of us. This continuing picking on words "bitter", "elite" detracts from the discussion of which of the elite has the best policy.

Obama just does not connect with the voters he was referring to and it makes him feel better to think they are guntoting, bible thumping bitter bigots than to look at himself and his campaign. Whether Obama is an elitist is more his state of mind than his pocketbook. He does think he is the intellectual superior to everyone. He must realize to win calling half the electorate names is probably not a great strategy.

This is what had said in a PRIVATE FUNDRAISING with his supporters in San Franciso:

"and it is not surprising that they cling to guns and religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them, or anti-immigrant or anti-trade as a way to explain their frustration."

It is NOT the word BITTER that made his word OFFENSIVE and UNFORGIVABLE, it was the word ANTIPATHY. He called middle America a bunch of BIGOTS!

Pro-Democracy   April 15th, 2008 4:13 pm ET

Can we all try to be intellectually honest? It is a sad truth that right-wing conservatives have successfully used cultural warfare as a means of getting rural Americans to vote against their economic best interest and contrary to the environmental health of our country and our kids. Hillary is using this tactic to the detriment of us all.

My stomach turns every time I hear Hillary talk about what Senator Obama said. Not surprisingly, most of what she's saying about him is in direct conflict with the facts.

The irony is that what Senator Obama said, though with admitedly poorly-chosen words, is basically true.

It's disturbing to watch her go on the rampage and accuse a man whose entire career has been about helping the disenfranchised of "looking down on the American people." He knows what it's like to have to work hard to get ahead, she knows how to politik.

SPQR753   April 15th, 2008 4:14 pm ET

Even if it is correct to state that a lot voters in many areas of the USA feel bitter, to link such bitterness to a close relationship with religion and with guns was a REALLY DUMB comment to make!

Moreover, my wife and I, do not have a garage and when it freezes or snows I have to scrape the windshield of two cars , shovel the snow off the driveway (and I am much, much older then Obama) YET I DO NOT WHINE.

On top of that my commute to my office entails a round trip of 200 miles sunshine, or rain, or snow.

YES : either Obama is an ELITIST or is out of touch with reality or both.

Shawn from Kansas   April 15th, 2008 4:14 pm ET

Someone needs to track Hill's advertising spending. Maybe this is a reason why she is refusing to quit. She needs more time to raise funds, so she can payback those people she swindled into donations. Hey, the longer she stays in the race, the more chapters she'll have for her book. Obviously, she's already making plans for a best seller, "Battling in American Politics, with Bill : A Comedy". I just hope she doesnt write a guide to running effective campaigns. She's too much like Trump — If a staffers idea backfires — "Your Fired"…she'll take no blame. How would she run a presidency?

I am offended by his term "ordinary people" on American Idol. Who does he think are "ordinary?"

Daryl (WHITE) Chicago, IL (land of obama)   April 15th, 2008 4:14 pm ET

I love it….To all Obama supporters…Don't respond to any of these repulsive comments by conservatives or Hillary supporters soon to be McCain supporters. THEY ARE LOSING, big time and they all know the end of both Hillary and McCains campaigns is coming soon. When you pull in $40 million dollars a month, most from private donors, and the other campaigns can't bring in half of that….well they have got a big problem. I love seeing most of them try to change our minds about Obama by being clever with "new" information (dirt) on Obama, changing his context of speeches, or the usual spin of politics. Or the best one is that his middle name is Hussein so that means he is muslim…by the way what is wrong with being muslim? The closed minded people that live in this country are the ones who scare me the most. They hate change and resist it to the end, they think everyone should be like them, and think like them, and vote like them because they are right and you are wrong. Well I am sorry to all the conservatives/Republicans and close minded people because you are about to get a HUGE dose of change next year. Think of Obama as a teflon freight train made of diamonds…nothing sticks and both the train and money keeps on coming! In fact I am going to donate another $200 just to spite AZM….by the way he bought his home after he received money from both of his books…did you read them? .

Don't be fool anymore America.

MIKE, PA   April 15th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

THIS GUY JUST TALKS… TALKS ANYTHING.. LISTENS TO ANYTHING ANYONE TALKS…. WE ALL KNOW HOW HIS WIFE AND HIM ARE PROUD OF THEIR COUNTRY.

HOW CAN ANYONE LISTENS TO REV WRIGHT AND CLAIM THAT THEY LOVE USA.

STOP TALKING… THINK BEFORE YOU TALK.

Roz, IL   April 15th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

"he's so arrogant" hillary supporters please, so what if he's arrogant. Hillary is arrogant, egotistic and a freaking nutcase to boot.

peter   April 15th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Which is better. Telling Americans lies about sniper shut in Bosnia or Saying what we Americans are going through and better about it, now becoming a political football. Remember how lies led us to Iraq. We can't be deceive by those liars any more. It is time for liars like Hillary Clinton to look for Monica. LSKY.

Nisha   April 15th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Steve- He has not made millions of dollars. You got the wrong candidate. Do your research and then open your mouth!

CB   April 15th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

What kind of president would you prefer?

One that at least tries to figure out why he is not connecting with certain people and keeps a dialogue with them. One that doesn't lie about what he said even though it was a poorly worded statement. One who is still winning in spite of fighting two battles at the same time, or

One who tells everyone exactly what they want to hear. One who lies with impunity and cannot admit to the lie. One who has lost but would rather try to win even if it handicapped their party for years to come.

I will vote for Senator Clinton in November if she somehow wins the nomination from Senator Obama because I dread the idea of Senator McCain making 2-4 Supreme Court appointments.

But it is obvious to me who is the stronger candidate among the two individuals. I believe Obama is a rare breed of politican and he has my complete support.

female grad student NYC   April 15th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

living in a CONDO in Chicago for 13 years is his way of proving he's POOR??? I think that's a bullet in your foot….. i guess he just wants to prove the elitism comment right…

The Clintons have only recently made more money, Hillary didn't grow up wealthy by any means. The Clintons and the Obama's income is close enough that saying one is poorer than the other is just splitting hairs.

Neither of them are poor, they've both made 1mill or more in the last several years, so let's move on from this distracting bs.

Jo   April 15th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Hillary was never in touch with the people.

She has NO clue what it's like on the streets.

I'm sick to death of all her lies and blaming other people.

This white woman could not and will not vote for someone like Hillary who lies all the time.

Hillary makes me sick !

BJ in PA   April 15th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

What about Hillary's connection to the secretive religious group called "The Family"? Their belief is that God has destined the "elite" to rule. Oh, that's how she came up with the word "elitist". Doesn't matter, CNN. You, like everyone else, won't post this because it would make Hillary look bad and maybe end this marathon primary.

Paul, Maine   April 15th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

. . .Senator Obama does not have to apologize for being intelligent.

NOBAMA NO WAY!   April 15th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

He seems to "laugh off" a lot lately - what an arrogant pr*ck.

VOTE FOR HILLARY!

California Girl   April 15th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

Fact 1:

Thank you for the the truth and the facts. You got it on the button!

43 year old white man   April 15th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

YOUR THE BEST OBAMA\ BOB JOHNSON IS STUPID HE SOLD BET ANYWAY

THE NEXT PRESIDENT OBAMA 08

zorba   April 15th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

For those calling Obama an elitist, I suggest you educate yourselves as to who he truly is by reading Dreams From My Father, which he wrote over ten years ago. Calling him 'arrogant' is first cousins to calling him 'uppity.' Since when does self-confidence, intelligence, articulateness and knowing how to counter-punch equal arrogance in American politics? Gimme a break!

Ana   April 15th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

Obama is an elitist. And a liar, too. Anyone read about him being at the Rezko party…???

chris   April 15th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

yes you are your a rich racist black man that goes to a black power teaching church your not fit to be an american much less president

Thall999   April 15th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

This just shows you how bad the Hillary Clinton Campaign has been.

To stoop to calling a man a elitist when she and Bill earned over 109 million dollars (not even counting 2007) is a campaign gone MAD s-t-u-p-i-d!

True Hillary supporters have to even shake their heads in disgust over this one. Bill and Mark is selling out American Union jobs to the highest foreign bidder and ther is Hillary pointing at Obama as being the culprit.

If that isn't a VERY BAD magic trick than what is? We can even see Hillary MOUTH and the JOBS move as she speaks. lol

carmen   April 15th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

Looks like the gun used for duck hunting is pointing at her feet now and is also backfiring. In any case an elitist, which he is not, would be much more preferable than an opportunist, a panderer, a hypocrite and a liar.

Mike   April 15th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

Can we have a bitter president? Yes we can! Yes wan can! Yes we can!

Go Bitter 08!

Can't Understand   April 15th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

Why Hillary is still in the race?

She has the most Delegates? No
She has more of the popular vote? Not at all
She has won more states? Nope
Based on the states we have left she has the possibility of leading in any one of those categories? . . . Not Possible

You Need to Go, Girl!!!

Jane   April 15th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

How come if anyone says anything against hillary, you are sexist??

one nation under god!!!!   April 15th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

I have news for you obama your an elitist and your mindless robots a.k.a.supporters are too

Carl from Pa   April 15th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

I think John Stewart said it best, "doesn't elitist mean good?" However, if being able to go to college and get good grades to then be able to get a good job and live the american dream makes you an elitist then well shouldn't we all be so lucky? The absurdity of this all and the hypocracy is just amazing. Maybe we should get them both some boxing gloves and sell tickets.

Angry and maybe bitter voter in Pa - voting for Obama

Ivar   April 15th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

Hillary and Bill made 109 million in a gap of 7 years….Hmmmmm and whom did hillary call elitist……Should i say more.?

Time4Change   April 15th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

Had John McCain or Hillary Clinton made that statement, it wouldn't even be a topic of discussion. But because the media tries to dictate to us whats what we should be bothered by, people seem to fall right into the trap. People keep saying Obama is fake, but of all 3 candidates, he's words on what his policies as president remain the same. He hasn't changed at all to win an extra vote. Hillary and McCain continue to change their positions as they view the polls. And Hillary will say and do anything for a vote. If she thinks she's going to win the electing fighting dirty, she's going to end up handing it over to the Republicans on a platter. And at this point, I wouldn't be surprised if the Clintons weren't on the Rebuplicans payroll.

Mama for Obama   April 15th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

Um, don't worry about us in Pennsylvania. I wasn't offended by Sen. Obama's remarks in the least. Remember, the truth shall set ye free.

And Porter, as for your comment, "the self made ones are the worst" - exactly what do you mean by ones? One of what?

I really thought we'd gotten somewhere in this country but obviously, some people are just insistent on dragging us all down with them. Those of you who want to stay mired in the politics of the past - please, go find an island where everyone looks and thinks the way you do and allow this country to progress to where it should be. What will it take for people to realize we have more in common than that which separates us and that politicians like Bush, Rove, Cheney et al love it when we're divided.

The politics of destruction is going to destroy us if we don't stop buying into this poision.

JERRY   April 15th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

I'm not an elitist, I'm not selling snake oil, I don't lie, I said that but I meant this….go away Obama. You're a joke.

Jen DFW   April 15th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

hillary had to fund her own schooling too.

George from Minneapolis   April 15th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

Obama is the most normal person to run for president in my lifetime. The elitist label wont stick. Whoever is advising Hillary should never be allowed to work on a campaign of any kind again. They are totally incompetent.

Calling Obama an elitist wh
