Obama laughed off charges he is an elitist.

WASHINGTON, Pennsylvania (CNN) – Barack Obama said Tuesday he was "amused" by accusations he is an "elitist" in the wake of the 'bitter-gate' controversy.

"It is true I am amused about this notion of elitist," Obama said, citing the fact that he was raised by a single mother, lived off food stamps, earned scholarships, and had to finance his own law school education.

"[Michelle and I] lived for the first 13 years of marriage up until three years ago, in a three bedroom condo without a garage," the White House hopeful said. "So if you live in Chicago, that means you are scraping ice every morning."

Hillary Clinton has called Obama "elitist" and "out of touch" for remarks he made at a fundraiser where he referred to some Pennsylvanians as "bitter" people who "cling to guns and religion."

During a veterans town hall near Pittsburgh, one man said that the way the word "elitist" had been used against Obama.

"As a white person, this term [elitist] the way that it is being used against you, it isn't far from uppity and I think the Clintons are getting away with something that they must be called on," the man said, adding that he thought the controversy would continue until someone told Clinton she was "close to prejudice here, this is wrong…"

The Illinois senator responded by blaming politics and the "silly season" for the controversy, but told the questioner he did not believe there were "racial overtones" to the recent attacks.

Obama is an elitist.

He went to the most expensive schools.

His wife is a joke.

At that level they are all elitist, aren't they??

Rezko, Reverend Wright, Bitter? Is this what the Clintonians are hanging their hopes on to try and detract from Obama. Please, Please give me some factual information on illegal deals with Rezko, show me that Reverend Wright constantly preached hate mongering over this 20 year period, give me evidence of elitist behaviour exhibited by Obama.

Nothing. As I thought, all talk and wishful thinking.

To Steve: Rich Grandparents?? Huh, where did you get that info. Please post. I've always heard of those welfare mom's putting themselves through the humiliation of getting food stamps rather that mooching off their rich parents.

Susan from Florida   April 15th, 2008 5:00 pm ET

The Obamas lived in a three bedroom condo and had to scrape ice off their car windows in the winter. OMG–they were practically living in a hovel.

Sensible Thinker in CA   April 15th, 2008 4:59 pm ET

Ok, let's all take a reality check here…

So many of you Clinton backers (which I was just two months ago) keep saying to those who support Obama:

"Wake up and see Obama for who he really is!"

Despite all the slinging and criticism about the meaning of his recent spoken words — which by the way were all dimissed as "just flowery words" when they were positive and uplifting, but are factual and condemning when they are in any way negative — Obama has shown that he genuinely seeks to do the right things, apologize for his faults, and SPEAK HONESTLY.

Sen Clinton, on the other hand, has DEMONSTRATED that she will DO AND SAY ANYTHING to advance her position at any point in time — including flat out LIE.

So I ask you, who would you really TRUST to lead this country?

Sensible thinkers trust Obama.

Melissa, PA   April 15th, 2008 4:56 pm ET

First..i must say that I am not supporting ANY of the candidates…they all make my skin crawl, because when you actually do your research, you find they ALL are liars.

What i find hilarious though is that the people not ticked off by his "bitter" and more remarks….are those of us in PA. And you know why? Because we listened to it all…not just the excerpts that the press post to try to cause controversy, so that it's all more "exciting" so people will watch.

We ARE bitter at the government…rightly so…and being here in the smack centre of PA, i can tell ya…..we love our guns ;-)

What i find MORE insulting is Hillary's sudden, extremely FAKE southern accent she's been putting on so thick lately, as she "pulls up her boot straps". It's insulting, and just makes me want to slap her every time she talks to us here. And she wonders why she's losing her lead big time. Just because we have a lot of farms, and like our guns, does not mean that we are hicks, and does not mean that we are southeners. Last i checked….we are still in the northeast.

K in NH   April 15th, 2008 4:54 pm ET

Okay, he might not be an elitist, but neither is he in touch with average Americans in any way. His career has been one long campaign with one goal – the White House. That's not the kind of experience that will be effective. It's certainly not the kind of experience I would vote into office.

shirley riley   April 15th, 2008 4:54 pm ET

Thall999   April 15th, 2008 4:54 pm ET

Gov-vie! Thank you. I say the same thing all the time. There's a BIG difference between making a gaffe or an error and all the candidates do it over the course on a long election process.

However, I do differentiate this with just LYING and sticking to this LIE even after it's brought to their attention.

While the Democrats are fighting, John McCain is riding around on his scooter saying all kinds of things and running into all kinds of stuff. As with Americans Airlines, his handlers have pulled him off the turmac and it now doing maintenace on his wirings.

Now ,his Economics plans sounds more like 100. Once he gets to 101 Economics, the Democrats are in Trouble! The RNP will hang a "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED" sign on his scooter and that will be it. lol

It's about time someone says exactly what realt folks are thinking .. enough of this feel-good, flag-waving BS that the Rethugs like to use and the BS "I'm the most experienced" poop … What we need is someone who is beyond all that BS and gets to frickin' work on day one … not wondering who's favor to repay from day-one …

Enough is enough, I'm bitter and proud to say so …

I love the show of intelligence in these forums. Anyone with half a brain can understand what Obama meant in his statements. Maybe if people would make decisions on their own rather than letting the politicians and TV make them for you, you would not be so quick to jump on the "bittergate" bandwagon.

I love it when people say that all Obama does is "lie lie and lie again,", but they never really cite what he is lying about. Politicians are the same, they will make a mess-up and then attempt to fix it to keep themselves in the race. Nobody is perfect. I respect Obama for sticking by his true statement, as well as not throwing his pastor under the bus when that was not politically correct.

The problem that I have with Clinton is that there seems to be no true direction for her campaign. It's like a hit or miss tactic. She will keep throwing things out there, and if they don't resonate with the voters, she moves onto something else. The fact that she is milking this whole bitter controversy scandal shows that she will do whatever she thinks it will take to win. She might call herself a fighter, but she is only fighting her own bad judgement these days. Obama, aside from the recent problems, has stayed on point with his message. If everyone wants to claim rezko for his sudden increase of fortune, anyone with google can see that he made his money off of book sales. But I guess that its too much to ask for people to actually find things out on their own.

Lisa   April 15th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

First want to let Steve know that Obama's grandparents that helped raise him was no where near rich. Read his book and you would know that.

Second why are we still even discussing this stupid topic. Maybe he misspoke but in the long run he is pretty much right on the money. I am from a small town, single parent and hit hard by the economy. I am very bitter with my government and I own guns and go to church, but what he said did not offend me in any way. People need to stop worrying about such nonissues and worry about who is going to make our economy and country a better place.

Obama knows what the American people want and he is what we need!!!

colene   April 15th, 2008 4:47 pm ET

Barack was wrong because there are more bitter people in america everywhere. We are all suffering in one way or another and we want help. So please everyone stop fighting and just go out and vote.

Tired of Idots   April 15th, 2008 4:47 pm ET

Once again here we go with the speculation. Obama as owned up to his relationship with Rezko but he is not being indicted. I wonder why! Maybe because he did nothing wrong. So let that go too…. Can we talk about stuff that makes sense. How many of you actually think that any politician who supposedly has as many connections as Hillary and John are going to actually do some work for the American people. They'll be to busy from day one trying to pay back political favors. We need a president of the poeple, for the people, by the people.

GO OBAMA '08′ '12′

Geez...   April 15th, 2008 4:47 pm ET

There is some exaggeration in this story. I have read a great deal on Barak's mother because I find her really interesting and intriguing. Barak did not have a struggling childhood. It may have been different, but certainly not sparse. He does not have a Jimmy Carter or Bill Clinton story, that's for sure. Also, when I was a newlywed, I certainly did not have a condo and I had student loans. These things do not exempt one from being an elitist. A great many wealthy and/or famous folks grew up in "struggling" situations. It is attitude that creates elitists, not education or wealth.

Stewart from North Carolina   April 15th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

The next time I hear Rezko mentioned against Obama, I think I'll just recall the glory years of Whitewater and whatever the Saudi's have done for Bill Clinton lately. Ahhh yes, such fond memories. The Clintons and Hillary's fans really don't want that brought up again, do they? And you know the Republicans will this Fall. There is so much more slime on the Clinton side, I don't think they want to go there.

To Joanne who said Obama would not be where he is without the black vote, I would like to say that no democratic candidate can get where they are without the black vote. They are a substantial part of the voting public and their vote carries exactly the same weight as yours or mine. The black community tends to rally around a democratic candidate, and this time it's Obama. Last time it was a white man. Your comment is very racist. Just an observation from another typical white woman.

Its sad that Obama has so fooled his supporters that they can not even admit when he makes a mistake.

Obama called millions of Americans racist. This has little to do with the word bitter..

Obama is not the great peace keeper and healer he claims. He is arrogant, and shows no problem re-telling his story to fool everyone. If this was HRC, you would be screaming LIAR. Well, Obama has lied about his remarks.

His typical political tactics are disgusting. He is worse than Hillary will ever be and his ridicule of Clinton was wrong. Now I see where is supporters get it from. You are sad people clinging to false hope, with little evidence that he can change anything.

Fabrizio   April 15th, 2008 4:44 pm ET

For two politicians who are each worth $100 million to call another, who actually lived on food stamps and just finished paying of school loans from decades ago an elitist is simply politics…

Also, isn't it interesting that they only focus on the last part of what he said and completely ignore the premise… "that these people have lost their source of income for over 25 years and nothing has replaced it"…

We are tired of these dirty political tricks!

AJ, IL   April 15th, 2008 4:43 pm ET

Hopefully Obama repeats this line of counter-punching tomorrow at the Philly debate forcefully and articulately. When the question comes up that Obama is an elitist and Hillary attacks, Obama should just smile and state the following in his calm and cool way:

"I don't understand how someone who was raised by a single mother, was on food stamps for a part of their childhood, lived in a poor Indonesia village for part of their childhood, earned scholarships, had to finance their own law school education, and recently paid them off be called elitist."

Then watch the audience respond!

Benjamin   April 15th, 2008 4:43 pm ET

Does anyone not realize that elitism is NOT a measure of wealth, but a measure of attitude towards your peers. Hillary understands blue collar, even if she's not blue color. Obama gives the impression, through his own words, that he looks down on blue color citizens.

That's what elitism is.

Mark   April 15th, 2008 4:43 pm ET

There are a lot better places to live in Chicago than a three bedroom condo on the south side. Lets ask Hillary about her days at the lake house and brunches at the Governor's mansion if you want to hear elitist.

Mama   April 15th, 2008 4:43 pm ET

We all need to stop fighting and learn to make informed decisions as adults. Respect each other's choice and just wait to see who the nominee will be. If you guys don't stop fighting, we all lose. The war will continue, nothing will change, economy will keep falling and the environment will be in bad shape. Doesn't it matter more to you guys that we have a person who will work on these things. I'd rather have Clinton or Obama, not McCain.

You guys need to grow up and stop parroting words.

I guess some people never outgrow the school yard mentality. If your candidate can't win the nomination, you're going to vote for McCain. For those who act that way, you deserve the mess we're in and the greater mess to come. I for one don't want to have endless war, a recession, inadequate health care, and global warming. Maybe it’s just me, but I want the world to be a better place for the coming generation and I don’t even have kids of my own. I don’t want to see other people’s kids die in war. Everyone should start caring more for each other and stop acting like bullies on these posts.

Elitist: Some one who really thinks she is better than anyone else and deserves to have whatever she wants, even if she has to call an intelligent, hard-working, sincere person an elitist to knock him down. This person could fight back with a long list of really serious, negative things , but he doesn't, because he is not an elitist.

I am dizzy. Hillary makes me dizzy. Please, take her away. End the war in Iraq and the one in the Democratic party.

Wake up america. Do you want anymore of this bunch of immoral power hungry group in the Whitehouse? The Clintons have and will continue to se;; america out to the highest bidder. lies, mistatements, and perjury are a way of life for these folks. They will sell out anyone for a vote. Ask those who knew Mr. Foster. The are shameless. Hillary has never been the victim of anything. She has been a co-conspirator in all of the Clinton shady deals. Those who are supporting her above the average voter, want something from her or are afraid of her. This includes the spineless media who would rather create soundbite disputes than seek out truth and report on it. Send thes scallywags packing. Don't let america become a Clinton piggybank there for the looting.

Eileen from Portland, Maine   April 15th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

Of course, the Clintons really do believe that Obama is elitist/uppity. They didn't think he had any right to even think he was good enough to run for President. They thought it was one big fairy tale for him to think he had any chance at all. After all Hillary and Bill are the head of the Democratic Party. And the very idea that he wouldn't bow out so she could grab her due, how arrogant of him.
Hillary Clinton, I will love it when I am able to vote for the first female president, but it will never be you. You have set the woman's movement back 50 years. Only time will tell how far you are setting the Democratic Party back, as this is the first time I can remember when a Democratic candidate running for the nomination, stood before the nation and told bald face lies, one after another and then you took us for such idiots you had the nerve to tell it was because you were tired. What kind of President would that make? I won't be a sucker for you Hillary, just because I am a white, middle aged woman.

Mack   April 15th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

Barack Obama has made amends over his comments; however, Hillary will not leave it alone. I wonder how she would feel if he hammered on her integrity everyday – maybe he should ask her if the bullets flying over her head have muddled her thought process. When she apologizes for "misspeaking", you don't hear Sen Obama raking her over the coals – yet, he has every right to make an issue of her integrity. I personally find it offensive that Hillary choses to lie to supporters about her Bosnia trip, and then there was the hospital issue about the child with no insurance, and then there's NAFTA. Was she always exhausted and sleep deprived? Well we certainly wouldn't want her answering that phone at 3 am if she can't handle a late night or two! Where does it end folks??? Sen Obama has my vote!

T. Wright   April 15th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

You were not elitish before, Obama ,because you were poor, but your problem now you become rich and fighting for the nomination for Presidency, from the beginning of your campaign so many people and I myself have said that you are so arrogant, you always says that you know everything that you are the best, and that you are better than anybody, you can say anything you want and if we disagree with you you just don't care we just have to take it or leave it you don't know how to apologize you will just try to be clever and get away with it. I know that you were feeling BITTER during your younger days and I am glad that you did not cling to guns only in drugs, your wife was bitter too she never like her country it's only now that she's starting to like it. This is the reason why you cannot condem REV. Wright because your family are rejoicing listening to your Pastor for 20 years. Try to find yourself of what you are, who you are and maybe you will have more peace. Bitternes becomes Hatred!!! that what J WRIGHT will tell us

In the words of the famous Jon Stewart, “the President has the opportunity to have his face carved on the side of a mountain, if he doesn’t think he’s better than the rest of us then he shouldn’t be running!” LOL!

With that being said, anyone who think Obama is an elitist or thinks John McCain won’t have a hell of time trying to prove the same in the GE then they are on something. The whole premise of the Republican party is to ignore the poor, no matter their color, and pander to their base, uppity, white, pseudo-conservatives, who themselves hide behind God, the 2nd amendment and pro-life stances to explain their beliefs. Well those stances work just fine for people making over $100K a year but the poor who are drawn to Republicans because of their stance on hot button issues can’t keep their jobs from going overseas and can’t afford healthcare…but they have the right to bare arms. It’s really silly when you look at it and all Obama did was expose a page in the Repubs playbook and the Repubs don’t like it. But like he said, he would expect that from McCain but not from Clinton…if she were a true Democrat she would have applauded Obama for exposing the obvious and opening rural voters’ eyes to the tricks of the Repub party. But seeing as how Hillary Clinton is a Republican in disguise, she took McCain’s side. Sad.

DFoster   April 15th, 2008 4:39 pm ET

Elitism is the belief or attitude that those individuals who are considered members of the elite — a select group of people with outstanding personal abilities, intellect, wealth, specialized training or experience, or other distinctive attributes — are those whose views on a matter are to be taken the most seriously or carry the most weight; whose views and/or actions are most likely to be constructive to society as a whole; or whose extraordinary skills, abilities or wisdom render them especially fit to govern [1]. Alternatively, the term elitism may be used to describe a situation in which power is concentrated in the hands of the elite … or the US Government!

If this doen't discribe Hillary to a "T" nothing does!

Kentucky Man   April 15th, 2008 4:39 pm ET

Yes you are and elitist Obama. You are just like any American who comes into fame. You think that you are better than everybody. By the way, I happen to like Annie Oakley and I happen to enjoy my shot of Crown Royal. There is nothing wrong with a woman taking a sip every now and then. Since when do us men control women to the point where we are telling them what they can drink and what they cannot drink? If you women want to take a shot, watch football, hang out with the guys, etc. then you are more than welcome too. So people, stop telling women what they can and cant do.

Mainely Carol   April 15th, 2008 4:39 pm ET

Hillary is undermining the Democratic party by unjustly lableling Obama in order to win what she believes is her rightful coronation as the Democratic Presidential Candidate.
Her Republican roots are showing, this is exactly the kind of campaign trash muck raking that has been perfected by Rove types.
Obama couldn't sit down and write a check for 5 million dolllars, but Hillary did.
Since when is the American Dream of growing up poor, working for and education and paying back through community and public service elitist? Really folks…. Do you hear yourselves?
Reject the verbal manipulation of Hillary and Vote Obama!

Kathleen   April 15th, 2008 4:38 pm ET

There is a big difference between arrogance and telling the truth. Obama, you just keep telling the truth because we the people need to know. What the Government has forgotten is it is suppose to be for the people and by the people. Keep your word when you become President and work for the people because I know Hillary will only make empty promises. She can't run a good campaign and stick to the issues. If people are smart they will realize what is behind her scheme of berating you. We need the right person as a President. My vote is for you.

Anne   April 15th, 2008 4:38 pm ET

For starters…ALL ex-presidents make money, so it isn't just Bill Clinton…ALL of them do….. If he hadn't made money, I'm sure that would be discussed ad nauseum.
Obama wasn't truthful about his parents meeting at the Selma march and "deciding to conceive a child"….I believe he was born a few years prior to the march… He also said his father was air-lifted out of Kenya by the Kennedy's and that isn't true either. He's not been truthful about a LOT of things but so many people gloss over the facts about him.
I've always thought you're known by whom you surround yourself with…both now and in the past and when I read about his friendships with William Ayres and his wife….. the Black Panthers…… the Weather Underground…Rezko…..Rev. Wright…and the list goes on and on….. I think it's pretty frightening……
If the mindset of some of the people typing in this blog is any indication of honesty…about the concerns of this country, then this country is in worse shape than I thought it was.

Porter said: Sometimes it's the self-made ones that are the worst…

Porter, if Obama had everything in life handed to him as opposed to being a self-made man, you would be criticizing him for that, too.

1) Obama is less of an elitist than HRC or McBush.

2) Do you even know what the word "elitist" means or are you just spewing the canned rhetoric like all the other Obama-haters out there? Look it up on wikipedia.

tupac   April 15th, 2008 4:36 pm ET

Mr. President-in-waiting, there is no need to even bother explaining yourself to the fools in the media or to the Hillary supporters. Any sane-minded person knows exactly what you meant but a lot of childish-minded fanatics who post commentaries on this blog or who appear on TV will never pause for even a second to ask themselves the serious question(s). No matter how honestly you try to explain yourselves they will never be satisfied, are happy to cling to the nonsense being dished out by their queen of lies, you know, the one who brokered the peace deal in Northern Ireland, landed commando-style under sniper fire in the Balkans, spoke forcibly against NAFTA when she was co-president, made sure that she would never support the DNC to disenfranchise the Michigan and Florida voters last year, even when she was leading in the so-called polls.

Andre-VA   April 15th, 2008 4:36 pm ET

Bayou joe- what to do? Vote Obama!

michael   April 15th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

McCain and Hillary are well established politician. they have been at it for years. I would love to hear what they say in private. People should just stick to issues. those twisting the words bitter to fit their agenda are basically saying small town people are so dumb to think on themselve. Their feeling have to be digested for their own good.

Judy   April 15th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

obama, it doesn't have ANYTHING to do with your background whether or not your an elitist. But since America does not know you, your words are a window to your soul and the saying those comments about religion and guns and bitterness can be interpreted as being an elitist. So there…

Change 2008   April 15th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

Ok – I’m confident that everyone understands HRC’s kitchen sink strategy purpose. HRC indicated that, “after the election win or loss I will be ok”. I 100% agree that the Clintons will be ok, because they have $100M in the bank. Lets stop doing the Republicans dirty work and tearing one another down. Please! We are all better then that. This isn’t about Hillary or Obama it’s about us average folks who are looking for a little help. One voice, one nation = change we can all agree upon.

mary   April 15th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

Show us your 2007 tax return!!

Peter   April 15th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

Wow, Barry! You had to finance your own law school education. What a heartbreaking story. That will go right up there with Lincoln splitting logs and FDR overcoming polio. I bet all those laid-off steel workers will really be able to relate.

Anonymous-IL   April 15th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

To all of you Hillary supporters… There is plenty of mud to sling and most of it hits Hillary:

WhiteWater, Peter Paul, William Hu to name a few. 35 years of experience racks up a lot of great "friends".

If Rezko is the best you got, I'll go with the "elitist", thanks!

raf   April 15th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

Good Lord, how is it that so few people see the similarities between this "elitist" title and the "flip-flopper" one that haunted Kerry. So many of you reciting this buzz word were, four years ago, upset because you knew the "flip-flopper" thing was simplistic and based on emotion.

Same thing with Gore and the "condascending intellectual" rap he got. It's a label political opponents use because they know it works, and it's you idiots allowing it to work — just this time against your own party.

Michael G- Ventura, CA   April 15th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

Good for you Barack! Let her have it! You so far from elitism that it's NOT funny! The elite folks that are worth hundreds of millions are calling YOU an elitist! Wake up America!

rachel   April 15th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

Hmm so sad so sad. I don't think I can bring myself to vote for Obama, his arrogance scares me. I think he is more arrogant than bush. People need to really question him and stop thinking that racisim will end if he is elected because he is mixed, because it won't. I wished I lived in a 3 bedroom condo, I wish I could afford to pay off my student loans, maybe send my neice to a nice private school like I am sure Obama's girls go to. Obama and Hillary are the same Obama mimicks everything Clinton says. I would rather have her. I just don't think Obama will get anything done.

SDunn   April 15th, 2008 4:32 pm ET

It's a pitty how the Hillary supporters here are so misinformed about their own candidate. That ignorance scares me.

Retired Navy Veteran   April 15th, 2008 4:32 pm ET

I endorse Senator Obama for President of the United States of America.

As you may recall our current President Bush, he does not always say things correctly or proper.

Let us America focus on Positive Change and Restoring America back to her greatness.

Also, let us pray for the Clintons………

That she will one day endorse the true leader for America our next President Barack Obama

ILoveAmerica   April 15th, 2008 4:32 pm ET

What could be more truly "elitist" than encouraging the 800 Democratic superdelegates to overturn the majority preference of tens of millions of American voters?

Vince Los Angeles, CA   April 15th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

All of you people putting Obama down crack me up. You're all COWARDS!..that's right cowards! You haven't a SHRED of evidence in anything that he has done over the course of his life to credibly label him an "elitist". Hillary Clinton used that term to give all you RACIST COWARDS an excuse to NOT vote for him. As with anything in life, when the chips are down you find out who your REAL freinds are. I always thought of the Democratic party as my friends…HOW WRONG I WAS. I'm glad I burned by Dem card and changed partys. I will be voting Independant from now on….If Hillary somehow wins the nomination, I will be voting for McCain….and I will NEVER again vote for a "woman's issue" (i.e. abortion rights)

mike   April 15th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

Hillary Clinton Supporters:

Just a couple of suggestions that might help your very insightful posts:

PUT YOUR CAPS LOCK KEY ON ALL THE TIME. This really helps the less intellectually-gifted Clinton supporters "get it".

Also, use exclamation points wherever and whenever you can – it shows you really care.

After all, "When Substance Fails, Impressions Matter" is and will remain the new Clinton slogan. Repeat it in all caps with exclamation points as often as possible. Please… let's get out the vote for her highness. She is entitled to the presidency by virture of her gender, regardless of her character. No one can possibly dispute that. GO HILLARY!!!!!!!!

Beth   April 15th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

PEOPLE! He wrote two best-selling novels in the last few years! Hence his increased income and bigger home. Check out his tax returns…it's all there.

Sean   April 15th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

Bernice   April 15th, 2008 4:30 pm ET

Obama stop focusing on her fooliness not one single person except those that were not going to vote for you anyway are even thinking about her saying this, to us it is a joke only showing how desperate she and her supporters are. They know as well as everyone else that this is only an excuse to justify them making a dumb dicision in voting for Hillary in the first place, in the second place they are bitter, but will not admit it simply because it came from your mouth. Truth hurts especially when someone you envy presents it.

They are reaching for air!

Oh! and this crap about her saying you are like George W. Bush is proof that she is insane and if anybody agrees with her they too are just as insane. stubbling in the night for a needle.

COME TO THE LIGHT PEOPLE!!

Mark   April 15th, 2008 4:30 pm ET

All I hear from you Clinton supporters is "bla bla bla, I'm mad because my candidate is going to loose and there's nothing I can do about it but be angry at Obama".

YOU NEED TO KNOW   April 15th, 2008 4:30 pm ET

Why does everyone keep trying to bring Rezko into the picture…..The case with Rezko is with the Governor of Illinios not Obama…there's nothing illegal involving Obama and Rezko. The Man got a good deal on his house and he didn't even buy the house from Rezko….get a life people

Obama 08   April 15th, 2008 4:30 pm ET

Rezko gave the Clintons money and MOST Americans are Elitist. I do believe MOST of you run around saying this is the greatest country and look down your noses at other country like this country is so PERFECT. I am bitter everytime I PUMP gas. The dropout rate is a mess, the justice system is a JOKE so america is not always what it seems. I guess this means I am un patrotic. Whatever. Also for you people stuck on this Rev Wright thing does your Pastor(if you have one) preach the same sermon every Sun?? I didnt think so. Case closed LET IT GO!!!

Gov-vie   April 15th, 2008 4:29 pm ET

All you Hillary, Obama, and McCain backers are foolish. You act like little children.

Of course Obama is going to mispeak – he is human. People expect him to be so perfect, but he's not. No one is.

Hillary is a tough lady. She had to be in order to deal with Bill. However, her "hurt them now and worry about the consequences later" mentality is hurting the Dems. Honestly, I don't think she is trying to win anymore. It seems more to me like she is trying to make Obama lose the November election so she can say "I told you so" and run in 2012.

As for McCain – he's just a Bush clone. Take him for what you see.

Nonetheless, all three of them are human. How would you like everyone in America picking apart every word, gesture, comment, and smile. When was the last time YOU had to apologize b/c of something your FRIEND did or said??? Stop the scrutiny people!!!!

Donj, NJ   April 15th, 2008 4:29 pm ET

Hillary supporters always recall Rev Wright issue to make their case against Sen. Obama whereas each week Sen. Clinton gives people something new to call her out on. Let's see what happens next week.

Obama… EARNED his way through life with honest hard work!

He is the example that many people need to see to lift them selves up.

"It is true I am amused about this notion of elitist," Obama said, citing the fact that he was raised by a single mother, lived off food stamps, earned scholarships, and had to finance his own law school education.

Obama is hope and faith that hard work and honesty will pay off and can lead you to achieve.

~~~~
Clinton… a proven LIAR… making $109,000,000 MILLION… who will say anything to win.
~~
Mmm… wonder who the elitist is… can anyone say don't throw stones?
Lee WV   April 15th, 2008 4:29 pm ET
The funny thing about this is that Hillary is using the names of Al Gore and John Kerry as examples of elitist,and it hasn't been 2 weeks since the headlines read"Can Al Gore save the Democratic party?"This is not going to help her enough.She will win PA but not the monster win she needs.Then she will lose as much or more back in NC.The Super delegates are going to abandon her if she stays on this course of negativity.
Kevin   April 15th, 2008 4:29 pm ET
I can't believe Obama is lying again!
He said he had to scrape ice off his car EVERY day.
Anybody from Chicago knows that this isn't true, you only have to scrape 7 months out of the year.
What a lying, out-of-touch, fake, arrogant…. oh wait a second, I'm not Howard Wolfson, what am I doing…
Go Obama!!!!
Kentucky Bob   April 15th, 2008 4:28 pm ET
Given the way anything said can be twisted, turned and spread across the country overnight with today's technology, it's not surprising that our democracy still works so well. It's surprising that it works at all.
Kevin   April 15th, 2008 4:28 pm ET
Just becasue your mama wanted to live her life without a job (she had an education she chose to live off of food stamps) does not mean you, yourself, are not an elitist. An elitist is someone who feels above everyone and strives to achieve that goal. Obama you fit that description to the letter. The sad part is you are fooling people that are thirsting for change (most of the bad things have been caused by liberal whining and media coverage). I hope people wake up and throw this empty suit in the garbage!
Mandi from Maine   April 15th, 2008 4:27 pm ET
Wow Hillary's Peter Paul trial is coming up. I wondering if you Hillary supporters will be talking about Rezko then. Such hypocrites.
Renee   April 15th, 2008 4:27 pm ET
Obama, stood up for the people speaking about their economics conditions and in trying to explain he got twisted but he didn't mean any harm and The Clintons and McCain both have more money than Obama and Obama had to work his way up and saw the hardship on people economics . in my personal opinion, Obama is more in touch with people economic conditions than HIlliary or Mccain could ever be. and Obama is very, very far from being a Elitist that is very funny.
OH my   April 15th, 2008 4:27 pm ET
And Obama WAS NOT at Rezko's house….
and Obama was not at the sermon…
and….
Monica, Texas   April 15th, 2008 4:26 pm ET
For all those Hillary supporters who continue to bring up Rezko why aren't you asking about Peter Paul and his trial that is soon expected to start. We do not see CNN or any of the news outlets discussing this matter…Why the imbalance on reporting????
"I know you comment is waiting moderation"
sacto joe   April 15th, 2008 4:26 pm ET
The notion that a poor black man who picked himself up by his bootstraps is "elitist" is beyond laughable. It exemplifies the extreme measures the Media Moguls will go to to pull him down and reduce his chances of becoming President.
The fact is, the right wing FEARS Senator Obama far more than either Senator Clinton or Senator McCain.
Beyond this, the sick truth is that Senator Clinton is using the right wing's attacks to pull this truly great and honorable man down, just so SHE can become President! She has taken the low road, and will forever be dishonored by her actions.
NO OBAMA   April 15th, 2008 4:26 pm ET
Obama, the word that describes you best is not elitist……its racist!!!!
People don't stand for this. Vote Hillary in 08!!!
Jan   April 15th, 2008 4:25 pm ET
Will the real Barrack Obama please stand up? jeff tobin makes him out to be a poor boy with a mother on food stamps and, due to his genius, he made his way to the presidential nomination. Another story is that he lived in and grew up in the "paradise" of Hawaii and was sent to the best private schools by wealthy white grandparents. Maybe someone could tell us the truth. we know nothing about the man . And, Tobin, what do you expect Mrs Clinton to do ignore his gaffes? She IS running for the same job, is she not? I would be disappointed in her if she sat back, weakly, and allowed him to win on his oratory. He is slashing and burning as much or more than her, but you are giving him the green light!
Carmon   April 15th, 2008 4:25 pm ET
Hillary, what do you have to say about the 800,000 dollars your husband got from the Columbian Government. She responded:
Ha do ha do ha do ha do.
"How many angles dance on the head of a pin".
By that response alone lets me know that she is a straight face LIAR and she is hiding something and actually think it's funny.
Crocus   April 15th, 2008 4:25 pm ET
What is so gosh-darn awful about being elitist? Some elitists–think Thomas Jefferson, Franklin Roosevelt, John Kennedy–have made pretty good presidents!
Alex H   April 15th, 2008 4:25 pm ET
Anyone who thinks Obama is a racist and an elitist are proving his point: there is antipathy in this country. Btw… go look up the word. It does NOT mean racism.
Quite SAD how truely some clinton supporters are so BLIND, case and point some of her supporters really do sound BITTER how come hillary supporters NEVER and I mean NEVER questions things she has said during this entire campaigne. I have yet to see her supporters questioning the SAME LIE she's told on 3 different occasions but as soon as the video told a different story she has sleep deprevation her supporters said nothing, she said wright wouldn't be her pastor but it was ok when he was invited to the white house for dinner and praying for Bills misdeeds again her supporters said nothing the moment Obama said something to which at least the man has come out and said his words were ill chosen and apologize for offending people I have yet to see CLINTON come out and apologize for many of her misstatements some of you really need to wake up!!!
Vivian   April 15th, 2008 4:24 pm ET
Hillary is a liar, Mccain will keep us at war for as long as he can, Obama is our only hope. He is not perfect, never claimed to be and let the first one without fault, cast the first sotne. Who does Hillary think she is calling Obama elitist? She has got to be out of her mind. Obama was speaking to people who are wealthy and were at a fundraiser. He was only trying to get his point accross to them and let them know that they may be doing ok, but there are a lot of people out there who are not and are frustrated with washington and the politicians promises that have not been kept, after 25 years and several administrations. Hillary out right lies and some idiots still vote for her. I'd rather vote for someone who misspeaks than someone who lies. I would rather vote for someone who is not perfect at words sometimes, rather than soemone who is rehearsed and lies.
In the words of Winston Churchill, "The best argument against democracy is spending 5 min with a typical voter." I love how the willfully ignorant bring up Rezco, or "rich" grandparents. For heavens sake, pick up a book once in awhile and stop spewing hate! If you'd read Obama's books, you would get it, which, btw, is how he paid off his student loans and bought a nice house. He WORKED for it!
kathleen for Obama   April 15th, 2008 4:22 pm ET
Obama connects with voters everywhere because for the very
first time, we have a candidate that is not afraid to tell the truth.
He speaks of "feelings" like "bitter" that 'elitists" cannot identify
with. Obama will win the general election because he is starting
to get mad. The truth hurts when you have to did down into your
hearts and souls and admit that at one time or another, you have
"felt" bitter. If not, you are either rich are havn't lived that long. Look
into your parents lives and wonder have they ever "felt" bitter.
We Americans are wonderful strong people but we cannot
deny our feelings forever!!!! I don't want a liar to be President.
Please.
Diane   April 15th, 2008 4:22 pm ET
Even before the primary started I was asked what I thought of Obama. I do not have a college degree and not a political junkie, but just by my own instincts and judgement I did not like Obama from the beginning. I think it is the way that he presents himself and his body language, there is just something about the guy that I do not like nor do I trust. This whole talk of change and hope is nice, but I do think that it is all just rhetoric, its just talk to get us all full of hope only to find out that he is just another politician in it for himself. And from my own opinion I do not think that he has shown very good judgement with the people that he surrounds himself with.
James M, Tacoma WA   April 15th, 2008 4:22 pm ET
Go away, please, Hillary. You've poisoned the well enough. Either drop it and start playing like a Democrat not a Republican, or my vote WILL go elsewhere. You're no Democrat, you're just a Zell Miller and Joe Lieberman who will sell us down the river to the Republians.
MULU   April 15th, 2008 4:22 pm ET
Hillary ppl, I hope you see now there is no evidence left for you to keep supporting her. She lies and says anything to win. But if that is not possible, she will take the one who is winning to the gutter with herself. If a Dem is going to win this presidency, it can only be her and nobody else how intelligent and genuine they are.
Obama is the most normal person to run for president in my lifetime. The elitist label wont stick. Whoever is advising Hillary should never be allowed to work on a campaign of any kind again. They are totally incompetent.
Calling Obama an elitist when you have had a silver spoon in your mouth your whole life makes you look like an idiot. The people around Hillary are not doing her any good.
How many millions of dollars do you have McCain ??
Mama for Obama   April 15th, 2008 4:21 pm ET
Um, don't worry about us in Pennsylvania. I wasn't offended by Sen. Obama's remarks in the least. Remember, the truth shall set ye free.
And Porter, as for your comment, "the self made ones are the worst" – exactly what do you mean by ones? One of what?
I really thought we'd gotten somewhere in this country but obviously, some people are just insistent on dragging us all down with them. Those of you who want to stay mired in the politics of the past – please, go find an island where everyone looks and thinks the way you do and allow this country to progress to where it should be. What will it take for people to realize we have more in common than that which separates us and that politicians like Bush, Rove, Cheney et al love it when we're divided.
The politics of destruction is going to destroy us if we don't stop buying into this poision.
Time4Change   April 15th, 2008 4:20 pm ET
Had John McCain or Hillary Clinton made that statement, it wouldn't even be a topic of discussion. But because the media tries to dictate to us whats what we should be bothered by, people seem to fall right into the trap. People keep saying Obama is fake, but of all 3 candidates, he's words on what his policies as president remain the same. He hasn't changed at all to win an extra vote. Hillary and McCain continue to change their positions as they view the polls. And Hillary will say and do anything for a vote. If she thinks she's going to win the electing fighting dirty, she's going to end up handing it over to the Republicans on a platter. And at this point, I wouldn't be surprised if the Clintons weren't on the Rebuplicans payroll.
I think John Stewart said it best, "doesn't elitist mean good?" However, if being able to go to college and get good grades to then be able to get a good job and live the american dream makes you an elitist then well shouldn't we all be so lucky? The absurdity of this all and the hypocracy is just amazing. Maybe we should get them both some boxing gloves and sell tickets.
Thall999   April 15th, 2008 4:19 pm ET
This just shows you how bad the Hillary Clinton Campaign has been.
To stoop to calling a man a elitist when she and Bill earned over 109 million dollars (not even counting 2007) is a campaign gone MAD s-t-u-p-i-d!
True Hillary supporters have to even shake their heads in disgust over this one. Bill and Mark is selling out American Union jobs to the highest foreign bidder and ther is Hillary pointing at Obama as being the culprit.
If that isn't a VERY BAD magic trick than what is? We can even see Hillary MOUTH and the JOBS move as she speaks. lol
What about Hillary's connection to the secretive religious group called "The Family"? Their belief is that God has destined the "elite" to rule. Oh, that's how she came up with the word "elitist". Doesn't matter, CNN. You, like everyone else, won't post this because it would make Hillary look bad and maybe end this marathon primary.
Jo   April 15th, 2008 4:17 pm ET
Hillary was never in touch with the people.
She has NO clue what it's like on the streets.
I'm sick to death of all her lies and blaming other people.
This white woman could not and will not vote for someone like Hillary who lies all the time.
Hillary makes me sick !
living in a CONDO in Chicago for 13 years is his way of proving he's POOR??? I think that's a bullet in your foot….. i guess he just wants to prove the elitism comment right…
The Clintons have only recently made more money, Hillary didn't grow up wealthy by any means. The Clintons and the Obama's income is close enough that saying one is poorer than the other is just splitting hairs.
Neither of them are poor, they've both made 1mill or more in the last several years, so let's move on from this distracting bs.
CB   April 15th, 2008 4:17 pm ET
What kind of president would you prefer?
One that at least tries to figure out why he is not connecting with certain people and keeps a dialogue with them. One that doesn't lie about what he said even though it was a poorly worded statement. One who is still winning in spite of fighting two battles at the same time, or
One who tells everyone exactly what they want to hear. One who lies with impunity and cannot admit to the lie. One who has lost but would rather try to win even if it handicapped their party for years to come.
I will vote for Senator Clinton in November if she somehow wins the nomination from Senator Obama because I dread the idea of Senator McCain making 2-4 Supreme Court appointments.
But it is obvious to me who is the stronger candidate among the two individuals. I believe Obama is a rare breed of politican and he has my complete support.
Silver spoon Hillary calling someone elitist WT-? Never had to worry about where her next meal was coming from in her life. No college loan to pay back because dear old dad and mom took care of it for her.
Obama spoke the truth about us hard working people that have lost jobs over the years.
As Bill said "give me a break".
Don't be fool anymore America.
Let me see. Hiliary gets insurance free for life. Most people in Pennsylvania have no insurance or they can barely pay for it. Hiliary gets free plane rides on a private plane. Folks in Pennsylvania pay for their airfare and has to get on a redeye at 5:30am to cut costs. Hiliary gets Secret Service protection for life. Folks in Pennsylvania has to wait for the police to come. Hiliary lived in the White House and never paid the mortgage. Folks in Pennsylvania are losing their homes because they can't pay for their mortgage. Yet she still says she has not seen any bitter people since she has been campaigning in Pennsylvania. Now that is elistist is to not recognize the misfortunate/poor in front of you as if they don't exist.
You said that:
Honestly, if it were not for the Black vote you would not be where you are. Coming from a typical white woman…………..
WELL, WE SEE HOW SMART YOU ARE, AFRICAN AMERICANS MAKE UP 12% OF THE U.S. POPULATION. IF 100% OF AFRICAN AMERICANS VOTED FOR HIM ( WHICH HAVE NOT), HE STILL WOULD NOT WIN. SO TYPICAL WHITE WOMAN PLEASE READ AND STOP JUST TYPING ANYTHING. BECAUSE IT MAKE THE OTHER TYPICAL WIHTE WOMEN WHO ARE EDUCATED SEEM VERY DUMB! AND I DONT THINK THEY WANT YOU SPEAK FOR THEM ANYWAYS!
Obama is an elitist. I cannot believe he is still standing by his comments. He has a Phd; I am sure he knows the meaning of such a simple word (i.e., bitter). Give me a break. We are learning the hypocrite he is.
Daryl (WHITE) Chicago, IL (land of obama)   April 15th, 2008 4:14 pm ET
I love it….To all Obama supporters…Don't respond to any of these repulsive comments by conservatives or Hillary supporters soon to be McCain supporters. THEY ARE LOSING, big time and they all know the end of both Hillary and McCains campaigns is coming soon. When you pull in $40 million dollars a month, most from private donors, and the other campaigns can't bring in half of that….well they have got a big problem. I love seeing most of them try to change our minds about Obama by being clever with "new" information (dirt) on Obama, changing his context of speeches, or the usual spin of politics. Or the best one is that his middle name is Hussein so that means he is muslim…by the way what is wrong with being muslim? The closed minded people that live in this country are the ones who scare me the most. They hate change and resist it to the end, they think everyone should be like them, and think like them, and vote like them because they are right and you are wrong. Well I am sorry to all the conservatives/Republicans and close minded people because you are about to get a HUGE dose of change next year. Think of Obama as a teflon freight train made of diamonds…nothing sticks and both the train and money keeps on coming! In fact I am going to donate another $200 just to spite AZM….by the way he bought his home after he received money from both of his books…did you read them? .
will win this election against McTricky.
McCain voted against the GI bill recently. I guess when our soldiers
come home, they will be forced to re-enlist. There are no jobs.
McCain "earmarks" would have excluded the funds for fixing bridges
that our citizens are driving across only to land in Lake Superior on
there way home from work.
Shawn from Kansas   April 15th, 2008 4:14 pm ET
Someone needs to track Hill's advertising spending. Maybe this is a reason why she is refusing to quit. She needs more time to raise funds, so she can payback those people she swindled into donations. Hey, the longer she stays in the race, the more chapters she'll have for her book. Obviously, she's already making plans for a best seller, "Battling in American Politics, with Bill : A Comedy". I just hope she doesnt write a guide to running effective campaigns. She's too much like Trump — If a staffers idea backfires — "Your Fired"…she'll take no blame. How would she run a presidency?
SPQR753   April 15th, 2008 4:14 pm ET
Even if it is correct to state that a lot voters in many areas of the USA feel bitter, to link such bitterness to a close relationship with religion and with guns was a REALLY DUMB comment to make!
Moreover, my wife and I, do not have a garage and when it freezes or snows I have to scrape the windshield of two cars , shovel the snow off the driveway (and I am much, much older then Obama) YET I DO NOT WHINE.
On top of that my commute to my office entails a round trip of 200 miles sunshine, or rain, or snow.
YES : either Obama is an ELITIST or is out of touch with reality or both.
My stomach turns every time I hear Hillary talk about what Senator Obama said. Not surprisingly, most of what she's saying about him is in direct conflict with the facts.
The irony is that what Senator Obama said, though with admitedly poorly-chosen words, is basically true.
It's disturbing to watch her go on the rampage and accuse a man whose entire career has been about helping the disenfranchised of "looking down on the American people." He knows what it's like to have to work hard to get ahead, she knows how to politik.
We must walk a mile in his shoes to understand how he must feel ,sometimes ,
Pro-Democracy   April 15th, 2008 4:13 pm ET
Can we all try to be intellectually honest? It is a sad truth that right-wing conservatives have successfully used cultural warfare as a means of getting rural Americans to vote against their economic best interest and contrary to the environmental health of our country and our kids. Hillary is using this tactic to the detriment of us all.
"and it is not surprising that they cling to guns and religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them, or anti-immigrant or anti-trade as a way to explain their frustration."
It is NOT the word BITTER that made his word OFFENSIVE and UNFORGIVABLE, it was the word ANTIPATHY. He called middle America a bunch of BIGOTS!
Obama just does not connect with the voters he was referring to and it makes him feel better to think they are guntoting, bible thumping bitter bigots than to look at himself and his campaign. Whether Obama is an elitist is more his state of mind than his pocketbook. He does think he is the intellectual superior to everyone. He must realize to win calling half the electorate names is probably not a great strategy.
il voter   April 15th, 2008 4:13 pm ET
so as per clinton is being elitist or raised to be elitist a bad thing?
Robert Barnett   April 15th, 2008 4:13 pm ET
Let's see – we are trying to elect a president to rule the world's largest economy. Who ever it is better be the best of the best to get us out of the mess we are in. That would narrow the choice down to an elite few.
Anyway Washington is full of elitism and everyone there is elitist. The problem with most of them is that they practice the fact that they think they are better than the rest of us. This continuing picking on words "bitter", "elite" detracts from the discussion of which of the elite has the best policy.
Andre   April 15th, 2008 4:13 pm ET
To all you idiots that think that an elitist can happen overnight, explain to me how Hillary can stay grounded with 109 million, or Bill with 250k a speech. Obama doesn't have 5 million to loan his campaign. I think that people who dislike Obama would admit that they were not going to vote for him anyway, and stop trying to fool us like "Bittergate" changed your mind. I am black man and I college educated, but since the economy has gone south I have been "Bitter" and I have found myself clinging to God as the source that will bring me through this crisis. Why does everyone have to make a big deal out of the truth. The truth shouldn't anger you it should make you free. If you trust more in your Smith & Wesson than you do your Government, maybe it is because every time you pulled the trigger it works, and everytime you look for the government to work it is broken. The Clinton's have shown themselves to be dividers not unifiers. Do you think that if someone would have asked Hillary a question about being racist or sexist, she would have said it was just silly season in politics or would she have said that it was true?
brody Lowe   April 15th, 2008 4:12 pm ET
He is also not the "street kid" he portrays, or tries to portrray.
He lived for a period in Honolulu, He has lived with his grandparents in Kansas- neither is a bastion for urban youth violence.
His biography often times changes depending on where he is in the country. How is it possible for one person to have done all the things he claims with any sense of accomplishment in the time span of his adult life? Urban crusader, Harvard professor, state legislator and U.S. senator, author, family man- all in a matter of what- 12-15 years? It sounds like the kid with a dozen or so after school jobs- none would be of much value without the time to master the position.
Was he born a member of the elite? No. Has he achieved that status by actions and words. Most definitely.
TAX TIME   April 15th, 2008 4:12 pm ET
It's national tax day, and in honor of this event Hillary Clinton's campaign began its conference call with reporters by calling on Barack Obama to release his tax returns from the late 1990s.
"Senator Obama, despite his rhetoric, does not appear to be abiding by the same standards that he has set for our campaign," said Phil Singer, Clinton's deputy communications director, regarding Obama's call on Clinton to release her tax returns. "He has refused to release his tax returns for 1997, 1998 and 1999, even though he was in public life during those years. And during that period of time he was accepting campaign contributions from lobbyists representing special interests, PACs, and even directly from corporations. We think that if Senator Obama is going to set a standard for our campaign certainly he should be following that same standard."
His dive into criminal types and radicals is a bit disturbing don't you Obama types think? How do you RATIONALIZE his hidden agenda's? The media has done almost no work on what he is all about in these realms. Strange, wouldn't you say?
I was brought up to trust someone with an important responsibility when they proved that they were capable, honest, enthusiastic, patriotic to the cause and straightforward. Is Obama any of these things? Why on earth should I vote for someone who I perceive to be a phony?
it is as though americans are on a self destructive path, news channels have been waiting for a guffaw from the candidates then a decline then more of the same. for once we have a leader with head on his shoulders not just ambition on his sleeves.
he has mobilized the nation, but no we must tear him apart and stay the mundane course of arcane politics were elections are decided by terms like elite , pro-life, gun control,
how that translates to the progress of the nation , I fail to comprehend . but the genius of the republicans ,Rove, says this is what the people votes for or against. Hillary agrees with him as well.
so should we hunker in for more unfair trade agreements long unnecessary wars, bad education system , because that is what washington doles out and that is how it will be for ever,
Since a candidate who deals with the problems of the people is deemed as condescending.
ironic , we have no freedom to chose in this democracy,
Obama has done nothing to you. He just said lets practice hope and with that we can change our politics and America. All of a sudden you are Bitter against him. Why would you think that people in small towns can't possibly be bitter after suffering so many government failures?
Think again Billarians…..you are haters and don't seem to vote on the issues and common sense and love for America……You just want to see your Billary and as clearly seen, most Americans don't want her or them!
Robert from NJ   April 15th, 2008 4:10 pm ET
This has ended up being another media circus and we are all feeding into it. It's become sport rather than serious discussion over the issues. BHO is brilliant, highly educated man but he's no elitist and those who say they found offense in his remarks were either McCaine or Billary folks who had already planned to vote for their candidate. I would expect this from McCaine and the Republicans…and even think it would not be out of line for the typical hype given a campaign, but for this to come from Clinton, a colleague in the Senate and a member of his own party with a political philosophy, voting regard and an almost identical agenda on the issues smacks of ruthless politics. For Hillary Clinton, it's all about Hillary Clinton…screw the Democratic Party.
If the quotation below is true Obama is not only an elitist he is a falce elitist ! "Obama at Rezko's house for a party whose guest of honor was someone Obama has said he can't recall ever meeting." Is that why he opposed the war in Irak?
kent   April 15th, 2008 4:09 pm ET
Bitterness is a reality. It may take root and grow when circumstances turn out to be worse than we worked for and expected. For the Clintons and their supporters the campaign thus far has not turned out as they expected. There are signs in the Clintons and their camp of bitterness having taken root. Their bitterness is directed toward Barack Obama. The root can either be removed or left to grow and never uprooted.
freddie   April 15th, 2008 4:09 pm ET
And another thing…the media is really making me ill on this one. They are all spewing the same garbage almost verbatim and it's really sad! Why don't they turn this around on HRC the way they should be…they all know he just bumbled his words up a little. And Hillary knows a thing or 2 about "misspeaking" and "misremembering" doesn't she? Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow seem to be the only members of the press who haven't lost their everloving minds!
Dave in NJ   April 15th, 2008 4:08 pm ET
This is truly amazing. Obama makes a true statement, perhaps put out using the wrong words, but real Americans agreed because they understood what he meant. It is sad that the media once again has looped something & ran it in the ground. Yet HRC can lie repeatedly, not answer the simplest of questions, keep Penn on board, not release 2007 tax filings, and still not be grilled by the media like Obama. It let's you know who the real elitest people are,HRC. If the supporters of HRC are so hateful and opposed to having an african american as president, then they deserve whatever befalls them. I guarentee them by the time Hillary or
McCain finishes screwing up this country, we all will be bitter, broke, busted and disgusted.
Barb Canada,
4 years ago Barack got the proceeds from his book, a little over a million dollars, not quite the 27 million Bill Clinton took in from his book and other proceeds, nor the 50 million he got talking on behalf of Columbia and the like, or the 31 million that went to Clinton"s "foundation" by helping to broker exclusive rights to the uranium mining in Khazakstan for his Canadian buddy. I don't think the Clintons want to get into an in depth discussion on where their money comes from.
For God sake Hillary and her husband made 10M for the last 6 years and she calling Obama an elitist who just fished paying his student loan two years ago grow up with a single mom with food stamps.
What a joke she must not be as smart as I thought if she thinks she can fool the American people by this comments. Shame on you hillary.
JimmyBoy   April 15th, 2008 4:08 pm ET
Why would anyone that went to an elitist university like Harvard ever be considered an elitist?
How could someone that has had a silver spoon for so long be considered an elitist?
How could anyone who listened to the down to earth, nitti-gritty, common vulgar sermons of ex-Reverend Write for twenty years ever be considered an elitist?
Obama is just a down-to-earth kind of guy like all the young gun-toting, heat packing young blacks on the South Side of Chicago.(I been there.)
He is more like Hillary who grew up in Park Ridge, Il with a very low crime rate, a hardworking suburb. ( I been there. )
And he is just like the small town local yokels he referred do. (Been in a lot of small towns, I am proud to say. Live in one now.)
And this was obviously a mis-speak on his part(this Harvard graduate), because he would not say anything at all to lose one vote in Pennysylvania(Been there, enjoyed it.) because he needs them desperately.
Hillary's 30 years of experience for the people of pennsylvania include being a corporate lawyer for walmart, who's job it was to crush labor unions, and NAFTA. We salute you hillary, for sending our jobs away and then telling us we're resilient.
Different Mike   April 15th, 2008 4:07 pm ET
Isn't that special Barack. Was that after you grew up in private school in Hawaii, and after you built your new 1.3 million dollar home or do I have my dates mixed up? Also, please explain why (i'm confused) you were living in a 3 BR condo when your wife was making 300,000 plus as CEO of one non profit and CFO of another corporation. Sometimes in life you just have to ask yourself "does this story add up"? In this case I think it's obviously NO!
Reality   April 15th, 2008 4:07 pm ET
Anyone with an ounce of common sense would know he is not an elitist. The person who is doing the name calling is the one that is the most ELITIST!!! It still blows my mind reading some of these ridiculous comments. Humm… just started making money a few years ago vs been rolling in the dough and living the good life for 25 years. I'll leave this for other bloggers to decide.
LET JUST HOPE COMMON SENSE PREVAILS!
Obama just offended millions of Americans. He did not apologize but stood by his comments, now he sees it backfired, he is trying to justify his poor judgment. Stereotypes are the result of a lack of information =ignorance. Do we need a Harvard alumni who pretends to be better than his fellow citizens?
We do not need anyone to look down on any of us, ' cause by doing so, he is not offending a few, but all of us.
McCain and Clinton should stop the nonsense about Obama's statement. If you want a REAL elitist statement, here's one:
Obama is not an elitist? Wonder how he can afford the things he can. I wonder why noone questioned him on the REZKO trial yet? CNN buried the news even though it came out today. hiding these things would not help you Obama. You have to answer to the people of Pennsylvania what were doing in parties that were hosted by Rezko.
stop with the BS. Be honest for once. No-one has seen the true colors of Obama.
Farrell, Houston, Tx   April 15th, 2008 4:06 pm ET
Hillary is an elitist and has been socializing with elitist all her life until she's out of touch and cannot identify who is and who isn't. Maybe one day, if she does get in touch, she will be able to identify Obama as well as millions of Americans as the non-elitist. Vote Obama.
Cynthia   April 15th, 2008 4:06 pm ET
Senator Obama is to be applauded for running an ethical campaign and not getting in the sewage with the Clintons. He obviously had to answer back when the Clintons went to far in their accusations. I can't wait until this part of the election is over and he meets Senator McCain. Senator McCain will be confusing a whole lot more things than he is now and will definitely be showing what the press call his angry side.
Senator, your comments speak for themselves. You may not be the richest, but you are certainly not the poorest…even in your youth as the press would have it. Its not money that makes you elitist, it's what you are saying. It doesn't help that you are the most arrogant politician I have seen ever.
Johnjones   April 15th, 2008 4:04 pm ET
On last night's Daily Show, Jon Stewart made an interesting point about elitism. Essentially he noted that being in the "elite" was a good thing. Do we really want a President in the White House who isn't in the elite? Who isn't smarter, tougher or better educated than us? We've had a non-elite President for closing on eight years now. I think I'd prefer an elite one at this point.
jc   April 15th, 2008 4:04 pm ET
I can't believe all this hoopla over someone speaking the truth. Of course, HRC does not seem to know what the truth is and things she can tell small town America how they should feel! Talk about elitist! I hope she keeps talking and talking about this…she is sinking faster and faster everyday. The debate will be very interesting tomorrow. She will come off like the out of touch shrew she is. It's unbelievable to me that anyone is still taking her seriously. Why is she helping McCain so much? I don't get it. She's lost it completely.
RT   April 15th, 2008 4:04 pm ET
Yeah Obama, a self-made, black man who has risen from poverty is an Elitist when Hillary Clinton (White Woman of Privilage, Ex-President's wife and multi-millionaire) and John McCain ( White Man of Privilige, multi-millionaire, son of 4-star Navy Admiral) are not Elitists? The media is just as guilty for trying to light a fire under this ridiculous notion as well.
mike   April 15th, 2008 4:04 pm ET
Obama should continue to respond this way because, although his comments were on the extreme side, this does not entitle someone like Hillary Clinton to label him as an elitist. That is just another politcal ploy that we have grown to expect from her. But I think he should continue to call her on this . Anyone who reports
109 million earnings and whose spouse takes 800 grand for his
work on Coumbian Free Trade and then tries to convince the public that she is anti-NAFTA is in no position to cast stones. Unfortunately, that is all she knows how to do. Oh yeah and shoot ducks!
Funny thing is IF they could read or use a search engine on the web they can find out your ENTIRE life’s story. Point is they do not or can't, BUT we are not that gullible and we can smell fear when it is around and BOY is it around THICK!
That is what you get for talking for and to the PEOPLE and not for the Billionaires and special interests!
Don’t back down from the Machine, no matter how hard they try. We are STILL waiting for the answers to the tough questions that Hillary owes us. It seems though that the powers that be don't want us to ever hear the answers they would rather focus on a single word slip-up instead.
tom   April 15th, 2008 4:03 pm ET
There is no question that Obama's comments showed he is a bit out of touch with how small town folks think, but that doesn't mean he doesn't care or understand about their struggles. We don't need a President to relate to every tradition or practice we pursue, we need a President that can recognize problems and set about fixing them. The very thing I hate about Hillary is how she pretends to have a connection with everyone. Her accent and twang changes wherever she speaks and she has a B.S. story to "connect" to every voter out their. Hillary going duck hunting? What a joke.
I'd rather have a competant, honest President who will use his 8 years in office to get to know the people better while he serves versus one who pretends and claims to know the people and then spends 8 years ignoring them and doing what he/she determines is best without regard. We just had that. Hillary is a phony. I'll take the real guy. Obama at least says what he thinks versus spouting off B.S.
Clinton will do or say anything to get elected. I loved the Clintons when Bill was in the White House, but Hillary makes my skin crawl…and her cackle doesn't make it any easier for me to actually listen to her. But the problem is that she would rather tear down Obama than talk about the issues. Its pathetic.
But if she gets elected, I will vote for her over McCain – we can't have another Republican.
Obama '08. If not, then Hillary.
I find it silly and immature that some Dems will not vote for a Dem in the White House. We're on the same side people!
Anna, SW Missouri   April 15th, 2008 4:02 pm ET
I think the people of PA get it! CBS is reporting that Clinton cut her speech to just 5 minutes today because the people in the room were not paying any attention to her. Good for them! Maybe they are tired of Hillary's "uppity" remarks instead of actually hearing them say that they ARE bitter with the way Washington is acting like they don't exist.
Stephen   April 15th, 2008 4:02 pm ET
Well if he says that he's not an elitist then it must not be true.
Just like how I'm the smartest man in the world. I've said it, therefore it must be true.
What Id like to hear from the pundits is that wealth is not a pre-requisite for elitism. I know people that are financially worse off than me and they are elitist, whereas I know people who are better off than me and they are not elitist. And when I hear the pundits start talking about 109 million, I know that they preaching to the lowest base of stupidity and they should be ashamed.
OBAMA '08
Fact1   April 15th, 2008 4:01 pm ET
Some of the news articles about Obama's gaffe this past weekend mention that his remarks were made at a private San Francisco fundraiser. What they fail to mention, that this private San Francisco fundraiser took place on Billionaire's Row at the mansion of the Getty's. You know…the BIG OIL, Getty's. Obama made private rmearks to his wealthy patrons figuring he was safe amongs his own crowd. He is an elitist and that's the least of his problems. Bet on it.
RJL for the USA   April 15th, 2008 4:01 pm ET
The CLINTONS are a joke. They have more than enough money to pay off their debt on the campaign trail (especially those debts owed to small businesses) but opt to ignore these little guys. Can you imagine what they will do with the country? Based on what we know about their past, present and can infer about their future, they should stop throwing "big" words like "ELITIST" around.
Anytime now we will be hearing from the angry and/or racist Clinton supporters! They have a right to be angry their candidate blew a perfect opportunity by running a horrible campaign and lying to try to appeal to a few people! Looks like it backfired!
Michael, VA   April 15th, 2008 4:00 pm ET
I know human nature. You are what you say in private. You show your true colors behind the scenes. You say what you truly believe when you are comfortable with the people around you. This combined with the Rev. Wright issue and the house dealing with Rezko has me very concerned with the trust factor of Obama. I fear this is going to haunt him in the General Election, and then 4 more years of Republicans. I am starting to feel Clinton with all her baggage has a better chance. At least her baggage is known. There is just a looming feeling with Obama that has me uneasy.
She must think she deserves to not pay off her own debts, that sounds more elitist than Obama to me.
Clinton is like a Vulture, preying on whatever scrap of irrelevant information or twisted fact she can find. This is getting stupid. I can't wait for Obama to be chosen as the Dem's nominee. Then the healing can begin..
Obama 08!
just because you are black, raised by a single mother, scrape ice off your car, or any of those things does not mean you are not an elitist. He has been making millions of dollars a year the last few years and has fame thrust upon him instantly.
Those are all things that can change you into an elitist quite quickly. I think his comments really do give us a feel for how he thinks. Relevant or not he has to take his lumps just like everyone else when they say something stupid.
Being raised by a single mother (with rich grangparents no less) is not an answer to everything you do and say incorrectly.
I think its interesting that someone who is worth $100M and used to live in the White House has the nerve to call a man who was once on food stamps elitist.
She needs to come right pout and say hes an uppity negro. Thats what she means after all
He sure did, hillary has yet to my knowledge paid and any of her Ohio campaign bills, maybe thats why she got booed yesterday.
Sometimes it's the self-made ones that are the worst…
Obama just paid his student loans off 4 years ago — ask Clinton when she paid hers off.
She's a joke!!
