(CNN) - Neither Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama would commit Wednesday when asked in a debate if they would take the other as their running mate should they win the nomination.

Both candidates responded to the first question of the debate with smiles, prompting laughter from the audience. After a moment, Obama said he was happy to respond.

"I think it's premature at this point for us to talk about who vice presidential candidates will be, because we're still trying to determine who the nominee will be." he said.

Clinton echoed those comments. "I'm going to do everything I possibly can to make sure that one of us takes the oath of office next January," she said. "I think that has to be the overriding goal, whatever we have to do."

Each candidate said they thought the other was capable of winning the presidency.

Obama I love you sir. But you have been taught a lesson....They are out to get you and you need to be prepared for anything.

mat   April 17th, 2008 3:09 am ET

The debate was poorly moderated. The 1st half of the debate was in my opinoin on tabloid fodder. Considering that George Stephanoupolus was a member of the Clinton team, I'm somewhat suspect about his role. The last part of the debate was more focus but rushed simply because they spent so much time and effort on Rev Wright, bittergate, flaggate and the 60s radicals. I mean none of this helps me at the pump nor puts food on my table , etc. I think HRC exposed herself with her 'umbrella' proposal; that makes her looks worser than Bush. In order to implement that proposal, she'd have to overide the constitution. In light of the stacked format, I think Obama stood his ground and jabbed back when needed

Cal nig   April 17th, 2008 3:04 am ET

HRC should back out of the race since she cannot beat Obama instead playing spoiler game. I guess she may be realising that Obama will be the next President hence her agreeing that one of them would be sworn in by end of the year.

The whole debate was Gotcha debate. After 20 debates, does anyone think there is anything we don't know about Hillary and Obama.
I found Obama to be very honest regardless of what his mistakes were. I can never trust Hillary and Bill and should drop out so that Obama can get a vp and get vetted before Nov.

mark,allentown,pa   April 17th, 2008 2:56 am ET

How come Hillary attack Obama on his blunders and Obama didn't attack her on her major blunders?
Is that what makes her a better candidate than Obama?
Just wondering........

vicky   April 17th, 2008 2:53 am ET

The debate was like a democrat to a GOP candidate. Honestly, does anything think those moderators are not in bed with Hillary?
All what happened was an attack on Obama and sinking him to a new low. I like the way Obama doesn't let things destruct him.
Go Obama, us people we are behind your candidacy.

Vince   April 17th, 2008 2:53 am ET

I agree Venus... Obama tried to help her out... she then turns around and tries to throw him under the bus with her attacks. Hillary you are hilarious!

angelina   April 17th, 2008 2:51 am ET

It was a horrilbe debate...for almost 35 minutes they talked and were asked about flag pins, wright, snipper, bosnia, ayers, bitter etc.I feel like it was Hannity of fox were asking those questions...shame on you abc

Sorry folks but thats the idea, to make your opponent look weaker than yourself or not as learned. Hillary is fighting to be the winner nothing wrong with that! Obama's doing the same, if you can't take the heat don't come in the kitchen! It will really get warm about September, but McBush will burn come November!

Hillary 08!

The debate moderators performed poorly. Charles Gibson and George Stephanoupolus behaved very unprofessionally and asked useless questions for about an hour!
I sense that ABC network is following Faux News tabloidic behavior.

Pam   April 17th, 2008 2:40 am ET

ABC wanted to throw dirt all night but only at one person.

Let's seethe HRC dirt fly:

Caucus states don't matter.
MI and FL don't count till she needs them.
Sniper fire
NAFTA
Judas
Elitist, that is my favorite btw
Columbia Bill
Columbia Mark Penn
5 Million Dollars short
Can't pay her campaign bills, (but can run a country?)

Sinks, toilets, whatever! The very fact that you think the American people are too dumb to see through you makes you unelectable HRC.
You and your husband consistantly say people don't matter, first caucus people, then young people, then two states full of people (of course you changed your mind on that didn't ya, I was here in Iowa when you said it BTW) Little states dont' matter. Then you tie/loose in Texas and of course super delegates don't matter, just electoral college.
I am sick of people not mattering Hillary!!

Satchmo   April 17th, 2008 2:37 am ET

Sen. Barack Obama is a blessing in making. For some of us we have not realized how simple-minded Sen. Hillary is. Yes today was a wake-up for more than just Hillary. That something great is about to happen. Wake up people we about to receive a breakthrough

Susan   April 17th, 2008 2:37 am ET

Hillary is out of touch with her elitist comments..let's do a recap. According to Webster an elitist is part of a superior group. So let's see Obama is an African American male of mixed heritage. His parents divorced when he was two. He had a white mother and an African father, was raised by a single mother and his grandparents in the 1960's. He had some scholarships to go to college but had to work and take out loans. He just finished paying off his loans. His mother died at a young age. Yea..he is an elitist.

Eric-Illinois   April 17th, 2008 2:36 am ET

Wow! did everyone see how uncomfortabel Obama was. This has to be his worst performance in a debate since this whole mess started. Once the presssure is really turned up a notch...this guy begins to fumble. Not the sign we should be looking for. He is just simply too inexperienced and "green" for the job. That oh so snide pout of his will make Kerry's aloofness seem like a rip roaring good time. Face it all you Obamacs.....This guy will wither and putter under the Republican attack machine. He will be standing there stomping his pampered foot going...."But Oprah promised I could be President.! Obama's fan club can't understand why those of us supporting Hillary would consider voting for McCain or Nadar or not voting for Pres. at all? Take a gander at the hate filled comments being thrown at us and Hillary....Take a look at the good ol boy network of party elders wwho have treated Hillary like some diner waitress....here honey here is a quarter now go fetch for us....They sure as hell liked and respected her when she was raiseing money for their campaigns. Say what you will Hillary is in there fighing...and Obama wants t no expects this thing to just be handed to him...Him being the Messiah and all.....Foolish...Once again Democrats put up for President a man who's patiotism is suspect... can't keep his foot out of his mouth and doesn't have clue how to fight bach against the Reppublicans....oh that's right obama doesn't want to fight with the Reps....he just wants to roll over for them....being like is of course the most important thing.

angel   April 17th, 2008 2:36 am ET

Hillary's attacks on Obama shows too much of her wickness and lack of valid moral and self confidence...only foolish people will fall for her dirty tactics....thanks the Creator this country' s folks are very smart to read those who seek power for power itself.......vote OBAMA.....

C.Colistro   April 17th, 2008 2:32 am ET

Obama should not let Hillary get on the ticket with him. She has seriously demonstrated that she is off the rails. I am so disappointed in her behavior She is making it hard for other women candidates because she is confirming some unfortunate stereotypes.

Lutfi   April 17th, 2008 2:31 am ET

You know what Hillary said about the Bosnia incident was that she 'misspoke' but shouldnt it have been a 'lie' ? I think what Barack said about being 'bitter' was a case of 'mis-speaking'. Havent they got it all confused?

chuckd   April 17th, 2008 2:29 am ET

I am seriously thinking that this was a test for Sen Obama. The first 30 or 40 minutes of the debate was all out attack on him. I for one will not be fooled by all the excess garbage out there and I would hope that future debates would hinge on both candidates being able to let the public know how they are going to fix the problems that face all americans face today. I agree with Venus that Sen. Clinton has sorely underestimated Sen Obama and the only way she can get the nod is if she brings him down. It is a sad day when a candiate cannot when on her own merits and not at the expense of her opponent. I believe that Sen Clinton is pressing the attack because if she can damage Obama enough and provide a McCain victory then she can make a run for the White House in 2012. An Obama victory does not provide the same opportunity. Let get this thing over with so we can get on to the general election. I want "CHANGE" , a new face in the game because 30+ years of political office experience brings with it lot's of favors owed to special interest and lobbyists.

Richard Rodriguez Rivera   April 17th, 2008 2:28 am ET

Venus, don't forget that the best way to thwart the negaive attacks and insults, is to respond with kindness and indulgence. This the best weapon to use and it hurts the opponent more, 'cause he is not allowing her to breake his spirit . This is mind bugging her and cannot see the trees for the forest anymore.

matt   April 17th, 2008 2:24 am ET

I thought Hillary was much more confident and Barack was studdering and unsure when asked questions by Charlie and George. Barack claims he's not the polotican and yet he attacted Hillary twice by sayihg she said things unaware that the camera were on. Also he lied when he said he only brought up the sniper fire when asked by reporters. He and his campaing have been all over the issue in the media. I thnk Barack is a big fake and his friendships with anti American leaders scares me silly. I think his true self is comming out more and more and when asked about the bitter comments he tried to change the subject. I do believe that he believes what Reverend Wright preaches is the truth and that is anti-white.

Wade   April 17th, 2008 2:24 am ET

Obama does not use those silly tactics for his campaign. He cannot attack Hillary for the Bosnia story or her tax return or her lies. It is left for the American people to see it for themselves.

Allen In NC   April 17th, 2008 2:22 am ET

The ABC news debate was a farce.... It shouldn't have been called a debate, It should have been called the defending. The two that were doing the interrogation, I mean moderating, Did nothing to help the two canidates get across the real issues to the people/america. They did nothing but instigate the two senators into more political bickering. It was a shame that they didn't ask more questions from both senators on the issues that most concern the people and thier future.

And I must give hillary a tiny bit of credit... She didn't release all the clinton fury on barack. If you noticed he tried his best to speak on the problems surronding us daily. And hillary Me Me Me and more of ME.... Touting her husbands past presidency/Touting NAFTA as if it were her own.... I thought for a few she was stumping for bill... Plesae PA.... Help put hillary out of our misery....

It's a very sad day in America when the media tries to sway voters to vote for a candidate. This debate was a disgrace to American's intelligence. It was so obvious that ABC was on Hillary Clinton's side. The questions were unfair and focused on Obama's small gaffes as opposed to Clintons many recurring gaffes, including lying shamelessly to the American people. It is sickening! Gibson and Stephanapolous are on Clintons' payroll! Is that what they learned in journalism school? SPECIAL INTERESTS GALORE!!!!

Richard Rodriguez Rivera   April 17th, 2008 2:16 am ET

Actually, she just took her mask off and showed the true power hungry lady she is, and her hobby does not help her any, he helps her to dig deeper in the hole she is in and cannot nor will not be able to dig herself out. She is just pushing him in trying to have him say the wrong thing at the wrong time. Like she told him, and he responded back, Shame on you Annie Oakley, go packing your six shooters elsewhere, this not tombstone nor the OK Corral.

Venus- I guess you failed to notice that Obama actually said he did'nt comment on the issue, and he was then corrected and thats when he accepted (Lying Again) and he then decided to move on from the subject, its funny how everytime Obama seem not to please with his response he would quickly try to change his policy and not only that he is always saying that he has to look into that??? If you are ready to bring change at least have a plan to start with.

he uses the frase Hope and change but never really specifies exactly what his plans are, this strategy seems to be working for him because people hear these words and they project the hopes onto him. but soon we will all see the Emperor has NO Clothes, and he is nothing more that the Typical politian that he claims not to be.

Hillary or Mc Cain

Yusef   April 17th, 2008 2:13 am ET

Personally I though this debate was the worst debate of All 21 debates. They did not talk about any important issues for the first 45min. Hillary clinton is just so unbelieveable in the way she attacks barak obama. I respect him by showing restrain in there argument when he could ripped her apart on the bosnia issue. I believe she is trying mest him up as much as possible so he can lose the general election so she can run again in 4years. I honestly believe thats her strategy.

mark from PA   April 17th, 2008 2:12 am ET

this debate was a plot to take obama down. i was watching closely that the modertator ask obama more questions that clinton. when obama is answering them, that silly keeps forcing the guy to answer the question. tonight, shame on reporters. if clinton wins pennsylvania, it because those reporters on abc have been paid. therefore we, americans wiil clung to our guns and religions.

James   April 17th, 2008 2:11 am ET

Did you guys miss the entire point – that the debate was complete tabloid crap?

John Adkisson   April 17th, 2008 2:11 am ET

Just finished watching this "debate" on the delayed West Coast, and I'm reeling with shock at the performance of the moderators.

I counted five rounds of questions focusing on Clinton's talking points on so-called Obama "issues" : (1) the flag pin; (2) Rev. Wright; (3) some has-been weather underground guy in Obama's neighborhood; (4) the "bitter" gaffe; and (5) [of course addressed to the African-American] affirmative action.

These completely screwy distractions literally took up half the debate. The moderators let Hillary spend her time trashing Obama on these fake issueswhich were raised initially by these so-called journalists while Obama was required to explain himself over and over while objecting to the fact that the questions were distractions.

Of course, Clinton being Clinton, attacked and attacked, and Obama pointedly remained respectful at one point even saying "Senator Clinton is entitled to make an error or two" (referring to her Bosnia hallucination).

It is hard to know who got the advantage out of this circus. But ABC got a big black eye.

This debate was won by Hillary. At last the media are asking probing questions of Obama and he was totally lacking.Media for too long allowed Obama the benefit of doubt and atlast it has ended. As the democratic frontrunner he needs to answer the questions posed to him.The people will ultimately decide who the democratic nominee is based on thier perceptions aided by an unfair but inquisitive media. If Obama supporters feel that asking such questions is hitting below the belt then they are reacting unfairly. They also must objectively give thier candidate a second look over.

Sanator Clinton, prior to this debate, when asked about Senator Obama, been electable she portrayed him as not electable. Tonight , at the same question, as opposed to Peter, she said three times, yes, yes, yes, to Obama, been electable. Wow, what a turn of events!!

What so great about Hillary ? I cannot get it. If she is finding fault with every word of her opponent then she is not a good candidate. It look like she does not have time to discuss real issues of the people. I am from a small town. If I loose amy job I feel bitter instead of happiness. That is reality. She does not get it. I hope people will understand how scruplously she wants to win the nomination. I think people are more intelligent than her.

The first 46 minutes were littered with questions that would insult a six year old. Flag pins were disscussed because the internet is buzzing about them? Give me a break? Are you more patriotic than someone else? The Weatherman?? I hear the second half was better but, I lost my concentration before that point. ABC owes an apology to the viewers.

Georgie wormed his way into the comments by interrupting Obama too many times. Clearly he leans to Hillary-he let her talk too much. I didn't appreciate Charlie's He said/She said questions. Enough already! I wanted to hear the gears of the brains click, unfortunately, not enough time was alloted towards issues. I thought the commentators lost the debate in the first segment. When the public says "we don't want to see them beat on each other", can't the commentator take control and avoid those devisive 'clear-it-up' questions? Maybe those guys like to keep the public dizzy stirring the pot.

Obama is losing serious credibility with his political antics, mainly *because* he walked into this whole thing claiming a "new kind of politics," holier than thou righteousness oozing everywhere he went. Now, he is mudslinging himself, which undermines his own credibility, wouldn't you say? I didn't have much of a problem with him before, but my concerns are just increasing with where he's going now... He's also going back on his financial plans, allegedly agreeing with McCain earlier on that public financing would be his only funding source. Now, that seems to have changed. Talk about throwing in the kitchen sink. Obama isn't ready for this–he needs a few more years, and some accomplishments greater than good rhetoric... but oh wait, his self-contradictions even go back on his allegedly good rhetoric. What's with this guy?

Marty   April 17th, 2008 1:56 am ET

Though it is tiresome and unattractive when either candidate attacks the other If either Candidate can't withstand these volleys they will be in big trouble when the Republicans get into attack mode. This is a rather important test for both candidates. Both Hillary and Barack have said they will rally behind the other should the other be the candidate. The Republican attacks will be far worse and its far better to face the issues now that will come up later.

Noel   April 17th, 2008 1:54 am ET

Yeah
It really does appear like shes losing her mind?
Being a president requires a lot of things, and I believe the most important of those things is character, and Hillary will lose that battle every single time.

Cant blame the girl for thinking long term though.
Hey, even if she loses this time around, which she will, if she damages Obama beyond repair, which im pretty sure shes completely intent on doing, then shes roll out a red carpet for McCain to steal this presidency, when a couple of months ago he had absolutely no chance, and then she can blame Obama in 4 years for not securing the white house and position herself as the royal incumbent like she did this year, simply because shes entitled dammit!!

We will reject her arrogance yet again though.

Dear Supporters and undecided ,
I saw when she was asked if Barack can win she rambled on. Then she said yes yes yes .
He can win . BUT ... Here the BUT she keep trying to go back to his remarks .
About ( Bitter ) and Pastor Weight . He handle himself very well .
She seems on one hand say yes he can win . And other no he can't because of this this that this that .
Well this well that . You guys now how she is .
I wish he would out right said she is a lier .
But then again . He not like that . He is a man of faith.

He don't like to put none down . He a trusting man and true man . He can win .
Even Hillary said it tonight . YES YES YES ...
He can win . And she will help him win .

So well lets see how fast she takes the attack add down. Also it was said tonight that 6 out of 10 P. A and across the country don't trust her .
Is it no wonder . She try to have it both ways .

On one hand she said yes yes yes , He can win . and other hand she still trying to beat him with real misstakes he said he made .
And it wont be the last time .

If you want a real and trusting man for presdint . Think about what your going to get if you vote for Hillary over Barack .

Hillary Whiskey drinking snipperfire duck hunting lie . Now she said her grandfather worked in a mill at 11 years old . Give me a break .

Or a man of real faith , Trusting , A true man .
A Man whom will always tell you what you need to hear . Not whats political correct answer . A man whom can heal this country and as well others . That no longer believe in us because of Bush .

I'll take Barack Obama .

I thought the ABC "debate" would have been much better if the first 45 or so minutes weren't devoted to "junk" and almost devoid of any issues.
The character game is way old-and I think we've all pretty much made up our minds on whom we trust...The ISSUES are what we should hear about.
Not good ABC!

Brett   April 17th, 2008 1:49 am ET

Some of us are fooled some of the time; all of the people some of the time; but not all of the people all of the time. It was Barrack's campaign that relentless attacked Hillary about Bosnia. And then he says during the debate "I " never commented about it. He is a snake oil salesman. And, like McCain, certainly doesn't understand economics. Are you sure he's not a Republican? He certainly uses their attack techniques, and lies, with the utmost finesse.

RM   April 17th, 2008 1:46 am ET

As a republican I can honestly say this debate was bias. Senator Obama did well. He showed character. Honestly do we want this for our Country? Do we really want people attacking a presidential candidate who is actually not engaing in the same old poltics. Why not support change? Why entertain tabloid politics?
Obama has convinced us that he is real. He is direct about his attitude and has not engaged in foolish arguements. If someone agrees with tonite's ridiculous debate, cleary they don't want America to move out of the gutter.

President Hillary Clinton '08 - !

Spider   April 17th, 2008 1:43 am ET

Of course Hillary is attacking, aggressively mind you. She is campaigning for the POTUS. She, as all Democrats should, wants the most qualified and electable candidate for the General Election. If any of you believe that the Republicans will not bring up the "bitter" statement, Reverend Wright, Chicago mobster Rezko and Obama's freshman Senator lack of experience and anything else they can find, you are so very sadly mistaken.
All of the dirt that can possibly be brought up has already been brought up about the Clintons. Millions spent by the Republicans to find something when Bill was President. The only thing that money bought was an incident with a cigar in the oval office. She has been vetted. Barack has not. If she cannot win the nomination with this attack, maybe she can toughen him up a little for the General.

Sen. Obama continues to impress me with his character and integrity. Something that has not been at the White House in well over two decades.

Tamika   April 17th, 2008 1:42 am ET

The debate was a travesty. Nomatter-Obama emerged victorious. It was a hit job on Obama. A continuous attack. Exactly 1 hour and 3 minutes into the debate a question about the economy (the number one issue in America) was asked. Less than Five minutes left in the debate they give One minute to the gas prices which are over 4 dollars in CA and other places and steadily rising. They spend One hour on BULL@*)%&. One hour on whether or not he wears a flag on his lapel pin. She didn't have one. So what? And no time on the issues. The only time the issues were brought up (Gas, Housing, Healthcare, Education) was when Obama re-directed the talk back to the issues. And why was it that the only time the so-called 'moderators' quieted the audience was when they were clapping for Obama? Where were the questions about Hillary's and Bill's $800,000.00 connection to the Colombian Trade people? Where was the question about Mark Penn and his closed door deal with the Colombian Trade people? Mark, who is still working for her? What a shameless, shameless so-called debate. No-matter-Barack was gracious and glorious and issue-oriented, for the people, as usual.

Teresa W. of Newport Bch, CA   April 17th, 2008 1:40 am ET

Hillary has rehearse this speech ahead of time. She was too comfortable with her answer. ABC news team was not fair with any of the questions given to Barack Obama. Most of the questions were attacks on Obama's creditability not to mention that Hillary had attack him from the flip side.

Hillary has proven that she will tear apart the Democratic party to stop Barack Obama from being nominated at all cost to the DNC. ABC news and Hillary Clinton handed the presidential nomination to Barack Obama on a silver platter. The 72% of the viewers say the Clintons campaign is disspecable and it has been manage very poorly. Not to mention the comment that Bill Clinton made about the elderly being smart about voting for Hillary. Dumb move Bill. You just pissed off the contributors/major voters for Hillary's campaign.

DNC please end this sherade after the Pennsylvania primary. You have a strong/worthy opponent Barack Obama he has proven himself time after time. At least he tries to show transperancy, honesty, unity for the people of the nation. Hllary hasn't shown any remorse for her misspoken, misdeeds, or insults to the american people intelligence.

CNN please post my comment

First 45 min. of debate , Is sucked a good word? Hope Charlie and George aren't patting each other on the back to much. The flag pin question had to be the highlight. The questions must have come from one of those magazines found at the check out counters in stores. After that it did improve. Senator Obama will pick a good running mate , when the time comes.

Mike   April 17th, 2008 1:39 am ET

That was not a debate, it was a waste of time. ABC has disgraced themselves with this fiasco. Too much time wasted on crap I don't care about when I'm paying $50 to fill up my 12 gallon gas tank.

A well informed press is essential for a free America. Tonight we watched as journalists (probably shouldn't use that term) betrayed their country. George and Gibson should slink away into a dark corner somewhere and not come out again.

No to Obama   April 17th, 2008 1:38 am ET

Venus, regarding your candidate being attacked by Hillary after he supposedly "tried to help" her (your words). You've got to be joking. The only thing he's trying to help her with is looking as bad as possible. That's politics and he plays the game well. Too bad he isn't as good on actual issues. Then you say things like "Obama – just keep your foot on her neck! She is not worth saving." It's interesting to see what aggressive tendencies Obama inspires in people. So much for a new politics.

You'll note that Hillary comes off as a team player, if she doesn't win the nomination, she will do all she can to get a Democrat elected. Don't see that quality in Obama.

Faye   April 17th, 2008 1:38 am ET

What wrong with you guys, Obama will have to face this in the national election if he cant take it now, how will he take it in the national election. I am a Democrat but will vote for John Mc Cain if Obama wins the nomination. He will not beat John Mc Cain. I want to win the general election I guess you guys dont. Hillary can beat John Mc Cain, Obama cant

Obama said it right when he said that the next president will be dealing with the biggest problems that any president has in 40 years. The person to handle those problems is Hillary Clinton. She has the best plans to deal with the economy, the military, and keep the Republicans in line.

dre   April 17th, 2008 1:31 am ET

I am a former Obama supporter, now supporting Hillary Clinton. I believe that a lot of what is said on these blogs, are unrelated to what actually took place in the debate, and just in general, most of what is written about anything anti-Clinton appears to be written by people who have paid no attention to what she has said or done and has pre-written their comments. Not all. People are allowed to have differing opinions. I believe that both candidates conducted themselves with civility when it comes to politics, and Barack Obama came under fire for many of his comments and actions. As did Hillary. But by far, Hillary was the most pointed, well poised candidate tonight. She stayed on her issues, and had a presidential air that Obama lacked when under his most intensive questioning yet. Hillary Clinton won this debate by far because she focused on her issues and policies. And she has my vote, a vote Obama has lost. I supported Obama when I believed that he was all for a new brand of politics, but it has become clear to me that this new type of politics only works when he is clear of political danger. Whenever Hillary gets a foot in he does exactly what he criticizes her of; his campaign becomes highly negative and highly "old-school" in terms of politics.

madhur   April 17th, 2008 1:30 am ET

this debate was rubish. the abc host was terrible. these people are thinking about themselves. there was not any serious issues about we american people. hussain cannot be president, in my opinion. he is a left wing liberal supported by all rich people who will dominate us after he elected.

jayjayaye   April 17th, 2008 1:28 am ET

If Clinton can admit to - how shall I put it? - "stretching the truth" about her visit to Bosnia and ask to be forgiven for doing so, how is it that she can keep on harping on Obama's "elitist" comment, which he himself admits was poorly stated and for which he has expressed his regrets?

Brad IL.   April 17th, 2008 1:27 am ET

Hillary didn't attack him, she is just telling the truth. He has no political know how to be the President of this country. He is a joke for a Senator , and I know cause I live in this state. He won his Senate seat by getting the other candidates disqualified so he could have a easy win. He is just like the rest of the political machine in Chicago, CROOKED. I wouldn't vote for the scum if he were the only one running. He hasn't written one bill that has become law, he just adds his name to someone else's bill. Do we really want someone in this office that can't even write a law . His alma-mater should be proud. He should ask for his money back on the education that he has recieved. People should really wake up and realize that this is not what this country needs at this time. I did and will vote for John McCain if Hillary is not the candidate, someone with the right knowledge of this office has got to be the President.

Rashida   April 17th, 2008 1:26 am ET

I don't understand why people can't see through Hillary's feeble attacks on Obama! Obama responds without ever trying to attack Sen. Clinton and she has many weak points he could hammer on. Obama shows great chracter when he doesn't stoop to low points as Sen. Clinton has, since she is losing. As Obama said squabbling over misconstrued/misspoken statements and people's religious leaders (people who are not the candidates) it will not help the poor people who are struggling to afford to buy food and stay in their home.

Electress   April 17th, 2008 1:26 am ET

Hillary did very well, she did not attack Obama, she answered questions! She even admitted once again that "Bosnia didn't jive"
and she was sorry!

Obama should not have referred to people with disabilities as
"MENTALLY DERANGED". I would have thought that since he has
years of experience in poor neighborhoods that he would have
been more sensitive, instead he magnified the disability.

Hillary has been fighting for soldiers and their families returning
from Iraq. We will have thousands of soldiers who are people
with mental disabilities, and not mentally deranged.
Hillaryy will fight to cut through barries, stigmas, and labels.

That is just another reason I support Hillary!

Mark   April 17th, 2008 1:25 am ET

Here is a statement from Hillary- "On a couple of occasions in the last weeks, um, I just said some things that weren't in keeping with what I knew to be the case..."

If that isn't an all out admission of lying to us, then I don't know what is. No wonder nearly 60% of voters don't think she is trustworthy.

Let's see a show of hands for how many people want to vote for a president who lies to them...

Mary   April 17th, 2008 1:24 am ET

After watching this debate my mind is completely made up that Hilary is NOT the person i would want as my president. She'll stop at noting to win even if it means attacking the very party she stands for. If she gets in the White House, i dare citizen to disagree with her or she'll attack them too! Obama handled himself diligently, professionally and presidential and he of all people deserve to be the next president. As of today, it's Obama for me!

jayjayaye   April 17th, 2008 1:24 am ET

To err is human; to forgive, divine. Both candidates have demonstrated that they are human (did anyone ever think otherwise?), but it seems to me that Clinton falls a bit short on the "d" word.

Crystal, California   April 17th, 2008 1:23 am ET

Jeff   April 17th, 2008 1:21 am ET

Hillary Clinton asked for forgiveness for lying – althought she did not use the word directly. Obama deferred on the issue. When asked about Obama's misquote, Hillary pounced on him mercilessly.

When someone asks the American Public for forgiveness and yet cannot forgive her opponent for a similar, albeit lesser accusation, that says it all for me.

Hillary has to go before she forever destroys the party.

BNS   April 17th, 2008 1:20 am ET

Hillary Clinton is doing her duty as an American and as a Democrat to create the conditions under which the other candidate is scrutinized.

She is doing us a service.

This may not mean that she gets the nomination, but at least it means that we know the person we are putting out there to represent the party.

People who see her behavior only as an attack fail to understand the bigger picture.

Obama may seem to be a nice guy, but we cannot afford to put him out there without testing his mettle.

LT for Obama   April 17th, 2008 1:18 am ET

I agree that Obama, even in this debate, attempted to bring the discussion back to issues.

What I also found funny is that many times, Hillary did not actually answer the question possed but instead went off into her stance of policies that had NOTHING to do with the question.

By the way, where is her 2007 return? She asked for Obama's yet all we have of her 2007 return is a summary. How do you have the audacity to ask form something that you have not provided.

Lastly, I know what I heard but did anyone else hear her say that she knowingly lied about Bosnia and other things she got caught lying about? She worded it very cleverly, however, it was clear that she admitted to lying. Do I want her to continue to lie to me and then after she gets in office say "Oops, I liked, I am sorry?"

Time to end the "Silly Season" Hillary and start backing the true winner of this campaign.

Clinton's "Yes, yes, yes" response to whether Obama could beat McCain just set the stage for her next set of lies to the superdelegates (and apparently, she is taking back what she told Gov. Bill Richardson). Unfortunately, there may not be any you tube footage to document her covert double-talk for the voters.

johnny   April 17th, 2008 1:17 am ET

I am not a democrat. I will probably not vote for either Hillary or Obama. I find it amazing, however, the way people who back Obama can rationalize every action that he makes. He never apologizes, he just claims that his words were misunderstood or that it was not what he meant to say or do. And his supporters swallow all of it and feed it to others as well. Even in tonight's debate, he brought up a statement that was made by Hillary in 1992 that had proven to be politically harmful to her. That is simply attacking her in the same fashion that he accuses Hillary of attacking him. And he does so in a backhanded manner that attempted to make it seem as if it was not simply a slur against her. This is only the latest instance of Obama's campaign wagging a finger a Clinton with it's left hand for a discretion or misdeed that the right hand is currently engaging in.

Wow! Hillary Clinton did a superb job in the debate. It was maybe the best debate thus far. Nice job ABC! It was fair and unbiased and equal, unlike the prior debates which seemed so biased against Senator Clinton.

I think Hillary Clinton demonstrated her knowledge and her strong grasp of the issues facing us right now. I think her plans for addressing the issues are solid and make sense.

Great debate! I liked seeing both candidates being civil to each other and I thought the moderators did a great job.

Jim   April 17th, 2008 1:13 am ET

I thought Hillary definitely understands the economy better and Obama got tripped up about his tax plan that just won't work. She was also firm about pulling out of Iraq and her plans to help all people rise up saying, "an affirmative action that includes all Americans". I really think she has the best chances of winning against McCain in the Fall.

Venus – let's have an intellegent conversation on these blogs

Burt – I appreciate your comment, but we are all Democrats and I have no doubt that the Clinton's or the Obama's will work hard to unify the party. Like a friend told me once, "We are all playing for the same team, we are just arguing over the MVP right now" Let's remember that we can all have different views and that vetting the candidate now is better than picking someone that falls apart during the general election.

Peace! Go Hillary! :)

I just have to laugh at the comments about Hilary attacking Obama and the reverse. There is so little to none of the discussion of the issues. Stop telling me about how incensed you are about the media talking points and talk about what each can offer in leadership. If you do you'll see that each of them offer us what the last 7-1/2 yrs have been lacking. Republicans have had their chance over this period of time and have made no contibution to the common good of this Country. We must be very careful to not allow that to continue.

The Democratic Senate and Congress are misleading the American People. There is no valid economic reason to reject the free trade agreement with Columbia. Colombia's exports already enter the U.S. market duty-free under the 1991 Andean Trade Preference Act. But most U.S. exports to Colombia face big tariffs; 35 percent on autos, 15 percent on tractors and 10 percent on computers. The agreement would reduce these to zero; therefore it has no impact on imports, but will significantly help our exports. Why are the Democrats opposing it? Just to be popular and look to oppose free trade? It certainly doesn’t have any economic reason.

It's disappointing that Hillary and Barrack both oppose it. It's time for congress, senate and the white house to do the hard but RIGHT things, not just tell us what they think we would like to hear. It's time for JOHN MCCAIN.

It surely it isn't ok to be sexist or racist; so why do some people have no problem being ageist? Heres a radical idea: Lets elect the person based on their integrity, honesty, commitment to America and their POLICY.

I'm glad they didn't make a commitment. The idea of Hillary as VP is as distasteful of her as Pres.

The Clinton trademark lack of integrity has caused a huge chasm to develop between them and many former supporters. People don't trust or respect her in the numbers that they did. And, with good reason!

Obama will have trustworthy and experienced men and women to select from. I'm sure he can pick a good partner to help him handle the heaviest responsibility in the nation.

AZCacti4Hillary   April 17th, 2008 1:05 am ET

Despite Clinton's strong answers to the questions, the majority of the quotes in this article are Obama's. I found Clinton's statements regarding why she would stick to her plan to withdraw troops from Iraq especially well thought out- the best showing of global understanding I've seen so far. I wish the media would focus less on whether a remark or criticism will "stick" to a candidate and more the soundness of their plans for our country in the next four years.

greenfun   April 17th, 2008 1:04 am ET

Clinton was CLEARLY more Presidential. Her command of specifics was obviously superior. What stands out in my mind is that it was the first fair debate and CNN cannot stand that their preferred candidate could not and does not measure up in a fair debate. Hillary Clinton continues to impress me. God that woman has an incredible grasp of what needs to be done once Bush is finally gone. She knows her stuff; and she exudes nothing but confidence. I can't imagine why Democrats all over the country wouldn't get behind her so she can be our next President.

Obama is running on this "appeal and charisma" thing. If he were a short little bald guy, he'd never have polled higher than fifth place and would have dropped out long ago.

Bushwhacked   April 17th, 2008 1:00 am ET

First of all, I wish the moderators hadn't brought up the sniper lies and the Wright issue and had concentrated on the more serious issues, as they did for the last hour. Hillary could not let it go - could not back down on her attacks even while saying she thought these things were unimportant [not in so many words, but in spirit, I felt]. I am so sick of all this attacking, and it's no secret who is doing the majority of it.

The sad thing is that I think Hillary could be a good president and that she has destroyed herself with her own campaign tactics. I was a supporter until she actually began campaigning - and she lost me.

And why should either of them commit to the other for VP? I'm not so sure that 'dream team' is really so dreamy, when you get right down to it.

'TeamObama' thinks the debate was brutal for my guy. He was on the defensive most of the time, and i couldn't breath for the first hour. Anyway, Obama shall overcome! He will be the next president.

I AM GOD   April 17th, 2008 12:56 am ET

Great Debate!!! Even a well greased machine grinds to a halt when it has had need of an overhaul from the beginning.
Let's give the American people great confidence and sincere pride. They know when to call it quits. That rio roaring machine apparently has grinded to a halt.
The defining volley of questions on electability was the straw that broke the camel's back. Hillary was actually caught off guard and pinned. She never saw it coming. By her own admission, she has conceded to letting the Obama campaign go forward.
Through it all, Senator Barak Obama has given his female opponent
all the respect and courtesy do her and the American people not to drag her in an ungodly barage of negativity. She was highly esteemed for her position as First Lady of a former dynasty. Obama did his utmost not to damage the American foundation.
Now we must band together and allow Obama the opportunity to go forward as the next president for these "troubled years" in American history. He may just be a sitting duck as was attributed to President Carter. He never had the priviledge to lead; just pray for the people.
OBAMA in 2008!

Hillary won the debate and Obama was arrogant.

Thall999   April 17th, 2008 12:55 am ET

I just had a chance to see Michele Obama's Speech at Villanova University. She was just BRILLANT. If any of you didn" see the entire speech, I STRONGLY encourage you to do so. It will answer a lot of your questions about her and Barack.

To bad, Bill Clinton couldn't do a better job for his WIFE. If Bill had just done for Hillary what she did for him when he ran for President, Hillary would be better off.

However, as a male, I was extremely moved by Michele Obama. I haven't had a chance to hear her before. I can't imagine women not being able to relate to Michele Obama after hearing this candid speech!

John Mccain 2008

ALBO   April 17th, 2008 12:53 am ET

THE DEBATE HAD ONE LOSER (HILLARY) AND ONE WINNER (MCcCAIN!!!)

Hillary torpedoed her only chance to convince Superdelegates to
reverse popular vote and nominate her, justifying this by her arguments THAT OBAMA is NOT ELECTIBLE due to his alleged lack of experience, the Preacher and elitism. But by admitting emphatically that he can win in front of McCAIN (obviously stating that she is more so, which OBAMA also obviously contradicted), and even if she try to tell the superdelegates that what she said was only OUT OF politeness, very few of the still not committed super's will dream to take the risk to alienate voters with the electibility
justification, after her public statement to the contrary !!

And McCAIN will frolic beacuse of the irrational statement of Hillary that she will follow her IRAQ timetable no matter what happen on the ground, OBAMA did slightly better by saying with less clarity that he will do so in 16 month basing on a plan imposed by the Presidency to the generals, with certain restrictions (but forgetting to SAY what would happen if the generals are not able to comply with the plan !!)

A similar irrational attitude regarding "no new taxes" for incomes
under $ 250,000, no matter the financial situation, by both candidates
will leave them open to GOP attacks, so that the DEMS will lose
their advantage attacking the GOP on this issue.

SO THIS DEBATE WILL NOT IMPROVE, BUT PROBABLY WORSEN
HILLARY'S CATASTROPHIC PUBLIC PERCEPTION AS SHOWN BY THE WASHINGTON POST / ABC POLL, NOT IMPROVE HER SITUATION IN THE UPCOMING PRIMARIES AND MOST IMPORTANT,
HER POSSIBILITIES TO ATTRACT SUPERDELEGATES HAVE NEARLY VANISHED.

WHAT WILL SHE DO NOW ??

ALBO

Done with HILLARY CLINTON   April 17th, 2008 12:53 am ET

This had to the lamest excuse for a debate I have ever seen! The questions for the first hour were ridiculous. I wanted to hear about the issues and when Hillary had the nerve to question Barack Obama's character it was too much for me. She's ducking sniper fire (3 times she said this for the past months), settling the crisis in Ireland, making over $109 million...etc. And he's out of touch ! He's the elitist !Go figure !

PA please wake up like IN did and push this woman out!!!

OBAMA 08!!! YES WE CAN!!!

ABC should be ashame for their hit job on Obama!!

SK   April 17th, 2008 12:52 am ET

I am an independent who is watching the democratic candidates very carefully.

Do you take us (American public) to be so stupid that we can not understand what Obama said. We are concern about NAFT and Columbian deal which is having direct impact on our manufacturing industry and Clinton's have lot to do with it.

I don't like the Clinton's lying to us and making every small thing a political issue and spin it in a negative way.

If you and other in this campaign will adamant to spread negative news it is hurting your campaign. Have you seen the recent poll Hillary. Your negative number are keep going up. Help yourself by staying on the issues and saying positive things and get out of this spin mood if you really want her to win.

Henry   April 17th, 2008 12:51 am ET

This debate was a "Fairly Tale", why didn't they ask Clinton about her lies on NAFTA ? Why didn't they talk about Mark Penn and the Columbian issue ? The moderators have consistently pressed Obama and been kind with Clinton, why ? Because she's a woman ?
We all know all the controversies about Mark Penn and Columbia, the lies about NAFTA and the girl in Ohio, why they didn't talk about that ?
This debate was unfair Obama, but he'll still be fine on tuesday.

j gannon   April 17th, 2008 12:50 am ET

Worst "debate" I have ever seen. What a waste of what could have been a very informative two hours.

Hillary won the debate by a landslide! She's such an inspiring woman! Smart, ambitious, and tough as nails! keep it up and win Pennsylvania!

rw   April 17th, 2008 12:47 am ET

Love Hillary or hate her, Barrack and Michelle can not beat John and Cindy. Republicans didn't like Teresa Heinz Kerry, they will pulverize Michelle Obama. She is mean.
You don't have to like Hillary, to know she has helped working people and women of all backgrounds her entire life and can do the job. Most people of diversity that are doing well now got their bump during Bill Clinton's adminstration.

Obama can dish it out but can't take it, Republicans will destroy him.
He calls Hillary names every day on the stump, she attacks his speeches.

There is nothing wrong with Obama, he is a politician, however, the supporters who believe he can change America without congress and senate, are in for a world of hurt.

Go Democratic Party!

nikki   April 17th, 2008 12:47 am ET

is anyone else bother that george stephanopoulos was the person asking the questions at the debates?!? he was a former advisor for the clintons? seems like there is some sort of ethical violations of journalist integrity. it also seems like if an former obama advisor were asking clinton questions- she'd throw a fit. This behavior by journalists has become standard on ABC and I feel like it is a dis service to this country and democracy.

Bola Muyis   April 17th, 2008 12:47 am ET

Wow did you all see that? George Stephanopoulos, Charles Gibson and Hillary Clinton won the debate. ABC news for president?

By the way CNN why won't you post any of my comments?

lt   April 17th, 2008 12:46 am ET

I am glad and hopefull that if Obama will be nominated, Clinton will bring her voters in to support him.

Typodi   April 17th, 2008 12:46 am ET

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't a debate a forum where impartial moderators question candidates about the issues, important issues? I found this horse and pony show to be insulting to the American voting public. We are bitter and we want answers – not a rehash or pummeling over non-issues that have been distorted or brought to life from a single cell sound bite.

My vote has not changed. Nor my opinion of these candidates.
I am still an Obama suppporter. That being said, if HRC should weasel her way into the nomination, I will vote for her in November. I, like Obama, have been against the war from the beginning. No son or daughter of America will die in Iraq because of a pissy non-vote or McCain crossover from me.

KE   April 17th, 2008 12:45 am ET

Obviously ABC asked hard questions to Obama. And Obama supporters are upset at ABC now. That's how Clinton supporters felt like for a long time. I can't wait to see the whole debate.

Ed   April 17th, 2008 12:45 am ET

I think a lot of people are sick of hearing Hillary and the same negative campaign. The sad thing is I think this is all she knows. The media allows the the campaign to be as good or as bad as their coverage.

Independent   April 17th, 2008 12:44 am ET

I watched the entire ABC debate...sure the debate was one-sided but I thought Obama did JUST fine...it was just another opportunity for him to restate his positions on the past controversies around him....what amazed me though is that the ABC narrators did not ask Sen. Clinton about her top advisor, Penn lobbying for the Columbian trade agreement....that was/is a considerable question to have asked???

p.s. Sen.Obama continue to stay strong for a few more months...June 3 is just around the corner....your coalition is still and will continue to be behind u!!

Mike   April 17th, 2008 12:43 am ET

Worst debate ever. At minute 54 of a 90 minute debate we finally got a question on a real issue. Thought I was watching FOX.

bernj   April 17th, 2008 12:43 am ET

Hillary has loser written all over her face. In contrast, Barack Obama seemed presidential and measured. Seriously, is there really a choice here? I hope the Clinton supporters come back to reality next Wednesday morning. Obama will be the next president. Not Hillary and not George Bush No. 3 aka John McCain.

tom haris   April 17th, 2008 12:42 am ET

Hillary needs to quit. If she wins the Democratic party, then Barack is right: Politics as Usual. How many more lies are we going to get from her? She fought in World War II? Landed on the moon? Stopped a gang fight in Compton? Won the annual Nathan's hotdog eating contest? Captured Saddam Hussein? Stopped a Hurricane? Fed the hungry–under gunfire–in Somalia? Hung out with Ghandi? Learned war tactics from Napoleon Bonaparte? Please, my friends, keep the lie threads going...

Chuck   April 17th, 2008 12:42 am ET

I wonder what kind of enjoyment Hillary gets from repeating her lies about Bosnia trip. I think she's still under the influence of "Crown Royal"....Surely, she has generated enough dislike within her own supporters that she'll easily lose her NY seat as well.

Anee   April 17th, 2008 12:41 am ET

Clinton is the next president of the united states of america.

Obama snobama looked weak and limp. He should just go away back to his mentor who tonight says he disowns, oops I mean disowns his words... make up your mind get your lies straight snobama.

kendall   April 17th, 2008 12:41 am ET

Just when I thought it couldn't any worse, I witnessed what had to be the WORST debate all year. ABC did a discraceful job of seemongly biased attacks on Obama.
Stephanopolos and Gibson, shame on you.

Ross in MD   April 17th, 2008 12:40 am ET

That was the worst waste of 2 hours I have ever experienced.

After an hour of stupid questions about non-issues like the adjective 'bitter', we got a half hour of more stupid questions on actual issues, interrupted with a half hour of commercials. The question about whether Obama would take Clinton as a running mate was stupid.

George S. had no business there as a former Clinton employee. With the exception of the Bosnia snipers, the stupid remarks were directed at Obama.

Hillary was pathetic. I think the moderators and Hillary are the only three people in the world who didn't think the questions were stupid.

Dumbest – Debate – Ever

Hillary's campain is seriously the worst managed campaign I have ever seen. This is really getting pathetic to watch - she uses uglier and uglier tactics which cause her numbers to go further and further down - so she uses uglier and uglier tactics... I think she has Leaonardo Dicaprio and Kate Winslet riding her!! It's just not nearly as entertaining watching her sink.

LMani   April 17th, 2008 12:35 am ET

As an Obama supporter do I believe he could have done a better job tonight? Sure. Why didnt he? Because he is at fault for trusting journalists for acting like jouralists. Whether you support Obama, Clinton or McCain there is no way in the world you can tell me that the ABC debate was one of the worst moderated debates we have seen.

In addition, while fair game to ask Obama hard questions, did you notice the lack of hard questions to Clinton (Mark Penn, Columbia?) Also no questiosn on health care??? No questiosn on trade or NAFTA????

This was a lynching job. Id be worried for for Obama if this was a fair debate. But this was so obvious a hit job that people are gonna be pissed off and I see the backlash coming against ABC and Clinton for just being there.

Even if Obama did well, I thought he would narrowly lose PA. Now im convinced people will be pissed off and he will win because of this.

CNN SUCKS 08   April 17th, 2008 12:35 am ET

Hillary only cares about herself and she will do anything to get what she thinks she deserves. She is a pathological liar and there is no difference between her and Bush.

Glenn   April 17th, 2008 12:34 am ET

These two bums had nothing to say about solving America's problems. BO said his mother took care of him, but fails to mention that his wonderful Dad abandoned the family. Both pander to the lowest common denominator, the average Democrat.

sargan   April 17th, 2008 12:34 am ET

i think the most revealing part of the debate was when clinton was asked about bosnia, she acknowledged that she had lied to the public which under any circumstances is unacceptable! but obama who could have attacked her hard on the credibility issue, chose to defended her! after all the misleading attacks against him from her and her campaign, he simply said we all make mistakes. she on the other hand attacked him even more after that without any regard to the fact that he is a fellow democrat or that he just defended her... to say the least, it left me in awe

Mary, a grandmother   April 17th, 2008 12:34 am ET

Watched the debate tonight and I would say that Clinton won 85 to 15%. Senator Obama looked angry a lot of the trime and simply danced around the issues. Hillary explained her policies more thoroughly and had only one negative topic: a trip that took place 12 years ago. Some of Obama's dirty laundry was exposed and his excuses were weak and shallow. He judgement is lacking and make him a poor choice for any elected office.
When one makes speeches to one group of elite people about small town and country citizens that is insulting at best and then says it is not what I said that was important; it was what I meant to say. Obama is not to be believed on any issue.

Deb, IN   April 17th, 2008 12:32 am ET

Paul   April 17th, 2008 12:31 am ET

What a night for the Democrats! If I were to declare a winner (and I personally think both are GREAT), I would say it was Hillary. I mean, Barack was on the ropes for a good 40 minutes to start. And, with the inclusion of Obama's ties to the radical group Weather Underground, I have a feeling the mainstream press will start digging up more on the topic, adding it to his growing Rezko concern. As for Hillary, I found her to be the confident and focused candidate that I recall in the earlier days of the primary.

Seth   April 17th, 2008 12:30 am ET

This story is so short because the debate questions were vacuous and predominantly irrelevant. Go read the 7000+ comments and counting on the ABC News site to see the backlash.

April in Texas   April 17th, 2008 12:30 am ET

This wasnt a debate it was a tabloid debacle and ABC should be discursted in themselves. Charles and George spent 50 minutes asking about nothing. It was a one way mudslinging fest which if thats what they were after the questions should have been fair for both. Clinton was never asked many questions I want answered such as why Mark Penn is still with her campaign. What about the Peter Paul trial which is scheduled in Nov. What about the contradictions of NAFTA and CAFTA. What about the 800,000 her husband recieved and the conflict there. What about the missing transcripts from the whitehouse. What about the donors to the Clinton Foundation. I could go on and on.

The DNC needs to end this now as if I was unsure before I am certain now that Hillary Clinton will NEVER get my vote.
Obama or nothing... If I wasnt BITTER before I am now... Tabloid reporting at its finest c/o ABC which I will now boycott. A written apology for not addressing real issues such as more on the housing issues healthcare the economy ect. anything would have been better than what the american people received..

Naomi in Texas   April 17th, 2008 12:29 am ET

Hillary needs to consider the high road, she makes herself look worse, pitiful, desperate with every punch she throws at Obama.

If she were fighting for the people, her campaign would not resort to beating up on its fellow opponent, its clear to me that she is fighting for herself.

After the Texas primaries I said that I would vote for Hillary if Obama lost, but now I trust Mcain more than I do Clinton and would vote for him.

Martha wanja   April 17th, 2008 12:27 am ET

audra   April 17th, 2008 12:26 am ET

I personally think both democrats are ridiculous and absolutely don't know what they are talking about! They seriously need to listen to thmeselves. I can't even believe what they said about the Iraq situation.....serioulsy isn't General Petreus who we should be listening to. He specializes in this. He wouldn't be in his position if he didn't know what he was talking about. Pull ou the troops in 60 days.....hello are we dumb here or what! I have two familiy members that are in the military and been to Iraq and no one likes war but can people seriously sleep at night knowing what we would do to those people if we left them.........I vote John McCain he seems to be the only one who makes any sense of anything.

Martha wanja   April 17th, 2008 12:25 am ET

Robert Knobler   April 17th, 2008 12:25 am ET

ABC and their moderators should never be allowed to conduct a debate again. I thought I was watching something out of the National Enquirer, not a supposedly reputable news organisation. They are a disgrace to the profession. With people dying in Iraq, with people losing their homes, jobs and financial security, they chose to devote half the debate on obscure trivia. Does the family that just got kicked out of their home really care if Barack Obama wears a flag pin on his lapel or not? Hillary is a desperate, losing candidate of the old school of politics, so I can somewhat understand her tactics, as reprehensible as they are. But it is not the duty of ABC news to aide and abet her wallowing in the politcal gutter.

Cathy in Walnut, California   April 17th, 2008 12:24 am ET

Hillary is so negative. It just makes her look bad. She wants to keep the negatives going instead of talking about what America cares about- the issues. Obama kept trying to take it back to the issues while she wanted to keep up the dirt.
It is also hillarious how she likes to pick and choose what she wants to take credit for from her husbands presidency.
I am also suspect how the commentators asked Obama about all of the controversal issues surrounding his compaign. I can understand the current issue of the "bitter" issue, but how many times does he have to state the same answer about Rev. Wright or the flag pin issue? He speaks excellent English, so what is the problem? Give me a break ! It almost seemed as if the debate was a set-up to attack Obama.

kurt, NM   April 17th, 2008 12:24 am ET

I am a democrat and I'm not for either one of them, but i will say that
as for a some of are talking about Hillary and her lies, i think you should think twice before you really stay with that portion of your stance
because for what i have been hearing from obama is not much of
a difference between either one on them on that part of the argument.
it seems to me that they are both good at putting out lies as you all
call them. As for obama he is what i would call a silver tongued devil
that says a lot, but really says nothing worth listening too. Just a bunch
of promises he can not fulfil.

carolyn LeBeauf   April 17th, 2008 12:20 am ET

HRC just could not help her self. She continued with her carl rove
tactic. The same old washington ways. Even when MR.OBAMA was

a man oc character.

Obama 08

Anthony - Dallas Texas   April 17th, 2008 12:19 am ET

It was obvious that this debate was more about attacking Obama on various issues, more than actually being about the issues.

The moderators were doing more interviewing that moderating. I find it funny that one of Bill Clinton's former aids was one of the moderators.

mel   April 17th, 2008 12:18 am ET

Venus said:"It's funny that when Hillary was asked about the sniper lies – Obama tried to help by saying let's not get sucked on that issues. And – then Hillary just had to go into her attack mode on him!"
-----------------–
You are either lying or gravely mistaken.Obama did not try to help her. He said that he did not comment on the Bosnia gaffe and the moderator said "no you didn't ,but your campaign has." He obviously wanted the topic changed because he was in hot water, and who can blame him. He was caught with his pants down.CNN and MSNBC have not done him any favors by fawning over him and neglecting to ask him some tough questions.ABC did and we saw the results. He was angry, bitter(pun intended) and unable to keep his cool.

John in PA   April 17th, 2008 12:18 am ET

I was going to vote for Hillary – until tonight. Her non-stop vicious attacks were sickening, and Obama took the high ground by refusing to launch attacks against Hillary, instead sticking to the issues.

Obama offers hope and honesty. It was clearly a win for Obama.

elana   April 17th, 2008 12:17 am ET

ABC should be ashamed of themselves. That was the worst debate ever due to the fact that the moderators were intent on tabloid fodder and beating dead horses. It should have been called the "Let's bring up every awful thing ever said about Obama and watch him squirm" I am disgusted

Wendy   April 17th, 2008 12:17 am ET

I was very disappointed that Mr. Gibson and Mr. Stephanopoulos spent 50 minutes rehashing the drama and media mill of the personal attack items instead of getting down to what the voters care about...the issues. Hillary did hoever sho once more that she will do anything to win and is incapable of behaving at a higher level.

NOBAMA NOWAY   April 17th, 2008 12:17 am ET

It's amazing to me that throughout the debate it was OBAMA who continuously attacked Hillary, yet at the same time, kept talking about how we should be beyond this type of politics...

Why is it that Obama can "call" Hillary "out" on things, but she can't do the same in return? For him to have criticized her about her "attacks" on his "bitter" comment is RIDICULOUS, given that this was something HE SAID. If he doesn't want to be criticized for such comments...THEN SHUT YOUR TRAP and don't say such stupidities!!

Every time Obama opens his mouth, the less I have respect for this hypocrite.

Jabbie   April 17th, 2008 12:17 am ET

Where was Hillary during the debate? Questioning was so one sided that it wasn't a debate. It seemed like the Clinton Campaign and Hannity has paid for this debate.

Katherine   April 17th, 2008 12:15 am ET

I know why I don't trust Hillary. It is well known about 'Chubby Hubby's'
strings of affairs, but believe me, it was a standing joke when he was in Arkansas politics. When good 'ole El Juapo' got his hand caught in the 'proverbial ' cigar box, I distinctly remember her, going on record on several talk shows, saying that she wasn't doing a Tammy Wynette, 'Standing by her Man' song. Really? Could have fooled me. To be subjected to worldwide humiliation and staying. I have to wonder for what purpose was she staying–POWER–maybe? Or does she have such low self esteem that she would stay and subject her and her daughter to such public cruelty. It makes me wonder, what kind and who would be making those important decisions at 3am, & would 'her Man' even be there in the presidential bed?

Gabriel   April 17th, 2008 12:15 am ET

She is done. She has essentially become a 3rd party candidate, because she certainly isn't running FOR the Democratic Party, just using them to become President.

I'm a barack obama supporter 100%, but tonight I believe hillary clinton did a great job tackling the issues. Now if anyone has ever seen some of my comments then you'd know that I'm very critical of hillary and the way that she's conducted her campaign, but I'm learning to be both critical and objective because if anyones been paying attention to the policies set by the current administration, and the way they've purposely mislead the american public, then you'd agree that we the people need to be well informed, if not extremely knowledgable about everything they say and do.

On the key issues discussed tonight I think hillary was alittle clearer on her agenda for bringing change to washington, and expressed with sheer excellence and specification how she'd get it done, but what was in question was her honesty. I felt her Bosnia answer was an excuse mixed with contradiction trying to be an apology. First she lied about what actually happened saying she was under sniper fire, then she said she misspoke, then bill said it was late and that she simply mispoke because she was tired, then he said it was because she's 60 and is entitled to forget, then in the debate she finally confessed to be dishonest leading to an indirect apology which really left me with the feeling that she was just trying to get out of hot water. Before SC was dead set on voting for her...every dem was, but her kitchen sink strategy reenforced the notion in my mind that politicians are slimy and will say and do anything to get a vote. As time has elapsed she's only gotten more crooked, more deceptive and more devicive. This is why I can't vote for her. I only wish that the person who showed up tonight was the person who showed up throughout the campaign because then I would have a real choice to make, but that's not what happened. I was able to see someone as barack who not only has intuitive knowledge of whats going on with a plan on how to fix it, but I also saw a person with integrity and the judgement to be the president.

So this is why Im for barack, and I'd hope that supporters of both sides would observe the candidates by being both critical "and" objective and stop fighting between each other because in the end, its all about regaining control of the white house because our future depends on it.

What a shame that your blog system is such a lie!

Since you have refused to post my last 10 comments, please remove me from your blog lost. (I bet, however, that you will, in your cynicism, will publish THIS comment!)

The real loser tonight was the press/media. It's time to take these political debates out of the incompetent hands of the press/media!

Hillary has it all over Obama as far as the issues go, If you guys think that Obama has been picked on, just wait you haven't seen anything yet He never make it though the election the republicans will make him out to be Buckwheat with a tie!

Vig   April 17th, 2008 12:07 am ET

Hillary won this debate. She has a much better grasp of the issues and is tougher than Obama. Obama impresses as a nice guy with a gift for talking off the top of his head, like a word processor. And it's about time he is being asked pertinent questions about his behavior. Finally people are treating him like an equal, instead of some rock star.

jamer   April 17th, 2008 12:07 am ET

This was not a debate, but am ***AMBUSH***!!!

No way was the playing feild level.

Senator Clinton did not have to say a word. She had all the help she needed.

I love the way people say Obama looked weak, and confused, I guess if you was taking on sniper fire from the moderators, you would as be confused and wondering if John McCain, was going to come out and start asking questions himself.

ABC showed how not to hold a debate.

My money is still on Senator Obama!!!!!!!

It's funny that when Hillary was asked about the sniper lies – Obama tried to help by saying let's not get sucked on that issues. And – then Hillary just had to go into her attack mode on him! After all that has been said and done – I will be happy when Hillary take Bill and go home. Not the white house – but where-ever they live! Obama – just keep your foot on her neck! She is not worth saving. I am also amazed that considering the brand name of the Clintons that she is having trouble beating a so called rookie!

she just lost my vote

Mark-TX   April 17th, 2008 12:06 am ET

It's such a shame that many of the Clinton and Obama supporters do not share the goals of their candidates; that is, getting a Democrat into the White House. Yes, fine, attack the candidate you like less, but vote for them if yours loses.

Granted, the only people that would probably take the time to read this are the ones that are already of this opinion, so it hardly matters that I'm saying it.

MikeH   April 17th, 2008 12:06 am ET

So I was outside the center and the Hillary supporters outnumbered Obama's supporters 4-5 to 1 and yet nonw of the media was covering it.

Michelle   April 17th, 2008 12:05 am ET

Hillary looked terrible when she would constantly attack Barack. He took the high road, confronted the (non) issues, and explained why they didnt matter. He even helped her. But all she did was stop short of admitting that she LIED about Bosnia, claiming that she remembered it with "less accuracy" then what she wrote in her book. I would have called BS. Barack didnt, he took the high road.

Obama won, Hillary looked desperate.

Molly   April 17th, 2008 12:05 am ET

GREAT DEBATE – Thank You ABC for bringing us the facts!
We need to know all the facts – you Finally asked Senator Obama about his questionable background – we ALL need to know.
We already have MSNBC and CNN as obama cheerleaders – everyone knows this is true. ABC gave us REAL NEWS/FACTS.
We are electing the President of the USA!
Both candidates did well on the important issues – but – we did learn some new insight into Obama's background.

DemocracyNow2008   April 17th, 2008 12:04 am ET

Hillary was given very little hard questions even on Bosnia she was let go easy .
Mark Penn and Columbia should have been a focus on Clinton regarding Cafta how could she not know what Mark Penn who resigned but is still a paided staffer.

It was a joke this socalled debate Obama acted above the Gutter while Hillary wanted to try and bring him into the Gutter .
Obama was the only one trying to talk about issues that are affecting the American people.
ABC News Charles Gibson and George Stephanopoulos should be fired from ABC News .First George Stephanopoulos is a former Clinton aide from Bill Clintons Whitehouse I see a conflict of interest having him on tonight as a Co-Moderator what was ABC News thinking?
I will never watch ABC News again with Charles Gibson .
Obama you have my vote for President truly after tonights big joke.

yvonne frank   April 17th, 2008 12:04 am ET

too bad all bo could do was whine tonight.what a joke. he looked like what he is one big empty suite and let the media spin how unfair abc was to him

Ugo   April 17th, 2008 12:04 am ET

I guess it should be pretty obvious by now that Obama is never going to have Sen sniper fire as his running mate. she's done anyways, so asking if Obama can be her vice is no longer an issue to consider. she can stay in this race however long she wants, probably until another sniper fire comes to eliminate her. u sooooo done Mrs pant suit.

Terry   April 17th, 2008 12:04 am ET

That was the worst display of jounalism I have ever seen. ABC should be ashamed of themselves, it was an absolute disgrace. WORST DEBATE EVER!!!!

vic   April 17th, 2008 12:04 am ET

This goes to show you what I know. Here we have George Stephanopolis – Bill Clinton's former Chief of Staff – straffing Obama for nearly an hour on gratuitous "flag pin" questions and the media is leading line is the Obama was on the defensive.

Actually I saw it quite differently. I believe Obama showed remarkable composure and level headed responses to what was clearly a correographed onslaught attack. Senator Clinton in the meantime was all but given a skate.

Then too, Clintons eyes were relentlessly shifting and looking disingenuinely downward as she tried to gang up with Stephanopolis. In my mind this helped solidify my impression that Clinton is a "shifty", "untrustworthy" person – as 60% of Americans agree.

While Clinton criticized Obama on the Rev. Wright – Obama reminded her that her own Pastor had come out in Wright's defense! Did the media miss this?

When Clinton joined in withh Stephanopolis on this left field "Weatherman" issue – he Obama pointed out the hubby Bill pardoned two Weathermen during his administration!

Clinton extended a new doctirne of American policy, claiming that she would put a protective shield over all the middle East against Iran – a dangerouse precident!

So who won the debate? How would I know – after all the media seems to have all the answers – apriori – these days. No need to report the news when you can be out there "making it".

ABC bias   April 17th, 2008 12:03 am ET

One of the worst debates ever, never really talked about nothing, only about who said what and who knows who. Also why is Geroge Stephanopulous (WHO WAS ON FORMER PERSIDENTS CLINTON PAYROLL) grilling Obama about a 60's radical group and a man Obama hardly new and a bombing that happened (WHEN OBAMA WAS ONLY EIGHT YEARS OLD). which FOX NEWS likes to bring up!!! Start talking about the issues and how each candidate can tackle gas prices, the economy, crumbling roads, the endless war in Iraq, etc, SHAME ON ABC!!!! OBAMA 08

truth now   April 17th, 2008 12:03 am ET

Sen obama was trying to tell the truth on social security. He said he would raise the cap on the amount of salary to be taxed. Now people don't want to hear the truth, so Sen Clinton stated she would appoint a commission to look at the problem which means in the end after more money is spent they will either raise the cap, lower benefits or raise the age at which you can apply for benefits. Wake up people, we need to share responsibility or lose the program which is what the Republicans want.

The thing which strikes me most about the Clinton campaign is how cynically tactical it is. As my friend said as we were watching the debate, she's playing the same old game while Obama is playing a whole new sport. She referred to herself as "a fighter" tonight. We need to look carefully at what she means by that. Of course, the good side of it is a relentless pursuit of noble goals. But the reality is a willingness to go to any lengths neccesary to achieve short term objectives. The Clintons have always played dirty. What's more, if you look at her campaign, its being run in the same way Bill's White House was. Cliques and feuding factions jockeying for power and prestige without much of a sense of vision or greater purpose. If Hillary gets to the White House, it will be 4 to 8 more years of Red state/Blue state. The Clintons and their operatives have always practicied the politics of division and the governing style of controlled chaos, which was perhaps appropriate for the 1990's. But we cannot afford that here in the 21st century.

Shirley, Silicon Valley, CA   April 17th, 2008 12:02 am ET

Hilliary is a knife fighter with trashy mouth. She is so disgraceful comparing to Obama. She would be a big joke comparing to McCain!

Michael NC   April 17th, 2008 12:02 am ET

ABC tonight had the best I have seen of the 21 debates. George Stephanopoulos did a great job! Asking hard questions and then going back when the candidate tried to play political spin.

@Burt... Maybe you have forgot, but this is a democratic contest. What is Hillary Clinton suppose to do, set on her hands, while Senator Obama attacks her?! Or better yet, give in and let him win? If he cannot handle what little Clinton is tossing at him, Obama will never hold up to a republican. He looked weak tonight int eh debate. To be honest, I was going to vote for Obama. After seeing Clinton tonight at the debate, re-visiting thier websites. I going to vote for Clinton in May here in NC.

Martin   April 17th, 2008 12:01 am ET

Venus, you're so right! He basically saved her at that moment. She was already sounding VERY bad when she was answering the question about Bosnia, and he could have made it much worse for her. She is lucky to be still on the campaign trail.

michael   April 17th, 2008 12:00 am ET

Ok no matter who you're supporting I must say that this debate was extremely biased. People are losing their jobs due to unfair trade agreements and not one question was asked about trade! The first 60 something minutes was an interrogation on Obama like it was Sean Hannity moderating the debate. It was the worst debate that I have ever seen. Also Stephanopolus shouldn't have moderated this debate because of his close ties to the Clinton Administration. It was absolutely ridiculous. Now we're learning that Stephanopolus was on Sean Hannity's radio show the day before and that's where he got his questions from, unbelievable.

W.H. Thomas   April 16th, 2008 11:57 pm ET

Wow !! Yall have to go to the ABC News website. Over 6,000 post debate comments and 90% are negative towards ABC News moderators. Reason why I love CNN so much. At least they care about the real issues.

H.M.   April 16th, 2008 11:56 pm ET

And why can't she say the same malarkey in a debate as she says to the super-delegates she's trying to convince? Many have come straight out and said that she's telling them that Obama CAN"T WIN. In the debate when asked straight out it was, "Yes, yes, yes! Gutless if you ask me. What's more, the general democratic public agrees. In the latest polls she scored only 38% on the subject of trustworthiness. And he's beating her on electability too by about 31 percentage points. In November she was ahead of him by, I think 28. That's a 59 point shift!!!

Joyce   April 16th, 2008 11:56 pm ET

I am sick of the flag lapel pin questions. Why do you have to wear one to be patriotic? The flag pin issue has to be the most ignorant of all. We call ourselves Christians right, so if we don't carry a bible are we not Christian? I watch C-Span everyday and do not see flag lapel pins, even on Bush, but Obama is the only one that has to wear one. Tonight Hillary didn't have one on, and I have never seen her wear one. So what makes her so patriotic. It should be in your heart not on your clothes.

Lisa in Iowa   April 16th, 2008 11:55 pm ET

This was the worst debate I have ever witnessed. ABC should be ashamed. George S. and Charlie G. acted like reporters from the National Enquirer. I think Senator Obama was, as always, above the fray, and gracious in his answers.

sandy   April 16th, 2008 11:54 pm ET

Obama has been the consumate gentlemen with her but she is like an attack dog who has been put on automatic pilot. She can't stop. Hopefully when this is all over, she can go home (to New York) and attack Bil over and over and over.

Hillary desperation played out tonight. She kept jabbing, but Obama does such an amazing job of deflecting her silly little jabs. Neither candidate had anything close to a knockout blow – I don't see this debate changing much in PA.

I saw that also and it's because she was just told that "National" polls show that the american people see her as untrustworthy by a margin of 3-1. She should be very, very worried by this point, so she went on the attack. Sen. Obama is a gentleman, to much so, I'[m a female and I would have put her back in her place a long time ago.
She put her foot in her mouth again tonight. She boxed herself into a corner by saying Sen. Obama is electable. She said, Yes, yes, Yes; he is electable. So, now she can't make that point to the super-delegates. This woman is scary, on one hand she says her faith get her though the day, then she turns around and does the underhanded things. This is why she is behind. God, does not like ugly. Maybe, if she had been in church for 20 years, this would somk in. The Lord sees everything you do.

You have got to be kidding!! I went in with an open mind with the two moderators but was quickly reminded that dear "ole" George was still working for the Clintons. It was so lopsided with attacks on Obama and Clinton getting a free walk. Obama held his composure and actually helped Clinton out with his statements concerning that they were both entitled to some mistakes then she turned right around and tore him up. This is the first time I have voted Democrat – I cannot believe how the Party is falling apart with Hillary at the forefront of the demise. I could not vote Republican again because of their fractured Party and no decent Candidates. Please Democrats, don't leave all of disenfranchised also.

ABC appears to think that the president of the USA needs to be a clown, and the citizenry a circus crowd. Sounds like a psychotic delusion to me... Is Dr. Phil in the house?

No surprises in the debate. I'm disappointed that the moderators didn't go after Shrillary more aggressively. Why didn't they ask her outright why she lied about Bosnia and Chelsea and umpteen other untruths. Too much of a free ride for Billary. Please go home to Bubba and count your coin and shut up about your concern for working families. You're a fraud and a sleaze. Good riddance!!

ABC News has destroyed their credibility in one night during this debate. All the pressing issues that are really effecting Americans took a backseat for Rev Wright, Flagpins, and 60s radical hippies only to smear a single candidate. I never watched ABC News and now I have a great reason not to start now. Shame on you ABC..

Obama has proven himself to be unelectable. He has no real grasp of what it is going to take in the GENERAL election, and cannot even unite the Democrats. He wants to be president of the liberals and not president of the USA. His baggage will haunt him if he is given the nomination by the super delegates. What is true is that neither can win but the rules alone. The mark is unreachable without the superdelegates.
If he is on the ticket I love America too much to vote for him.
For the first time I will vote republican. He is the destruction of America. It is in no way racist- my children are the same color as Obama however, the African American blood in them is of the line and lineage of slaves, not of the line and lineage of those who sold their brothers and sisters in bondage.

ABC did a horrible job with the debates tonight. It was tabloid journalism and clearly biased in favor of Clinton and against Obama. If you agree, contact ABC at Peter Salinger (THE MAN IN CHARGE OF ELECTION COVERAGE) Director, Special Events & Sports 212.456.5105 peter.salinger@abc.com.

I also called for the resignation of Stephanopolous (who previously worked for Bill Clinton) and Gibson for irresponsible, tabloid-style journalism. There is also a boycott of the station being planned.

Linda   April 16th, 2008 11:51 pm ET

Venus, I agree with you. I am watcing the debate and I use that word loosely. It seems to be an attack session on Senator Obama. The only wuestion to Senator Clinton was about Bosnia thus far. I have no problem with the questions, but the pushing when the answer seems to suffice. Pushing about why only now with denouce Wright. Well the fact is he denouce the statements not the man and he just learned about those snippets. Also, Ayers??? Seriously? I'm glad he pointed out that Pres. Clinton pardon two of the members. Clinton is staying in attack mode when Obama is saying let's talk about the political issues.

Ellie   April 16th, 2008 11:51 pm ET

Is everyone missing the fact that obama has been influenced by unscrupulous characters that he has been involved with, bombers and ministers that have the power to lead people down immoral roads.

Being President is entirely about character!! And after watching tonight's PA debate, my support will go to Sen. Clinton, who shows more moral character than Obama ever will.

I can't believe anyone would get behind a man that clearly listens to the wrong types of people. Just imagine what could happen if he were to be influenced by some of the worlds worst leaders.

Laidetea   April 16th, 2008 11:50 pm ET

She hasn't forgotten (burt). She did that despite Obama generous suggestion of trying to keep the debate on the issues. You saw first hand how she attacked him with issues that were not pertaining to the debate. Rather than Hillary being a Democratic matriach to her fellow partner and Democrat Sen. Obama she sought nothing more than to be more divisive than ever.

I have truly thought long on casting my vote to Barack Obama. After all that's been said she has proven that she will destroy the Democratic party and it members. She deserve to lose this race because she is not putting the people first. This is a personal conquest she fighting for now.

Ann Wright   April 16th, 2008 11:49 pm ET

Don't worry, despite the objectives of Hillary Clinton comments, she can't win so she is trying her best to bring you down. Be careful with that LIAR!
But don’t forget she is your friend, so she says. I admire the way you handled her during the Debate. You are well spoken and educated, and some people can't stand the direction in which you are headed. You deserve to be President. You have been through a lot.

I know this campaign has taken a lot of strength, being tested, questioning your political knowledge. It's going to be all right. Stand up and keep your cool.

You are my sunshine, and a lot of other people. I will be at the poll bright and early to vote for you, and don't let no one break your spirit. Bless you, President Obama!

This debate was a total hack job, that Charle Gibson, George and Hillary seemed to have planned the questions on advance and ganged up on Barack. So far I have counted four hard questions on Barack and one on Hillary which they quickly turned again into an Obama question! What a hackjob!

PB   April 16th, 2008 11:46 pm ET

George S as moderator, a shining light on Clinton's daughter every five minutes... 40 minutes of Obama bashing questions...Was that a paid Clinton ad?

Clinton replied to a question about why she LIED about Bosnia by saying she wasn't DUMB? Hmmmm. Maybe she should get more sleep, but ohhh she needs to be ready at 3am.

Obama may have worded things badly with the bitter comments but there was truth in his meaning, there was nothing but a lie in her Bosnia comments and everyone knows that...

And for being vetted, she has more bones in her closet then missing files in Vince Fosters office... Also why is no one mentioning what she and Bill did to put Stan Lee (comic book hero) out of business...

I am from PA but live in Colorado, PA please vote her out....

Please don't censor this.

frustrated, Iowa   April 16th, 2008 11:45 pm ET

I totally agree that Obama took the high road. We were very disappointed, however that the first half of the debate seemed to be a campaign commercial for Clinton attacking Obama. In all fairness, she didn't have to do the dirty work herself; she had George Stephanopolus interrupting and arguing with Obama, then lofting softballs to Hillary as the perfect interlude to her prepared statements. I wouldn't be surprised if George was wearing a Hillary '08 t-shirt underneath his suit!

Both supposed moderators clearly were trying to put Obama on the defensive and it was obvious who they are rooting for. Hopefully the American people have seen enough of the other balanced debates to make their decisions. Instead of taking tonight to really dive into important issues, we got to spend the first hour rehashing the explosive soundbites that are meant to distract and confuse people. Conflict is what sells, and it sure pushed their agenda tonight.

Keep your chin up Barack; we're still hanging on for an Obama presidency! America needs you!

Newman   April 16th, 2008 11:45 pm ET

Clinton lost that debate. Obama was the clear winner, and made it very clear where he stood on the issues. A lot of Pennsylvania voters just swayed his way tonight. Go Obama! '08

Sherri   April 16th, 2008 11:45 pm ET

Go Obama. You are honest. You are sincere. We need your integrity and intelligence.

The mediators, if you can call them that, were clearly on Hillary's side. The questions were aimed at Obama, and God bless him, he fielded them well.

Marc, Tacoma Wash   April 16th, 2008 11:44 pm ET

I am in shock that when they tried to attack Hillary, Obama was the better person and tried to make her look good. On the other hand, when they tried on Obama, she came with her claws ready to tear. I have lost all respect for Hillary Clinton. Obama said she could win in a General Election and Hillary said Yes, Yes, Yes. In this debate, Obama showed that he is the better man and I really think the people of PA will see this. She will do anything to win. She is really sad.

Obama 08

from Boston   April 16th, 2008 11:43 pm ET

Obama can spin his comments any way he wants – he is so bad that he is unelectable. He continuously has to spin and explain what he means after people become outraged at what he says. We know what he means the first time around, but to embellish and twist things a different way only makes him a fool.

H.M.   April 16th, 2008 11:43 pm ET

Venus:
This has been the theme for the last five months. She is willing to pull them both down for her own selfish ambitions. Every pundit out there has said the same thing. If the roles were reversed and Billary had the lead in votes, delegates, and states won, it done been over. Her supporters like to say that it's because Barack is black that he's getting 85%+ of the black vote. Alas they omit one thing, that she led among blacks until Obama won the 97% white state of IOWA. And not only did he win, she came in third. What I'd like to ask her is, "where would YOU be in the nomination if you weren't Bill Clintons wife??? I say she wouldn't even be a Senator, let alone President.

Beverley   April 16th, 2008 11:42 pm ET

This was the worst presidential debates of the 30+ (republican and democratic) debates I have watched. Where was the exchange of ideas or policies? Where were the issues that matter to the majority of voters? (like we didnt know that Clinton lies and Barrack does want to put holes in his fancy suit lapels!) I am so mad – I'll never watch ABC again (in case you haven't noticed George and Charlie – we have options and they run 24/7! unlike you!)

Lastly, CNN I have watched you since 6th grade when Bernie Shaw was your anchor – if you let those ABC Bozos trash your industry and get away calling their dismal and bias horse and pony show as a debate – I'll get all my news off the net.

Jack Cafferty I expect one of your questions to be about this debacle! Wolf remind everyone why all your debates were rating breakers! Howard Kurtz – I'll be watching your show on sunday! Don't let them get away with this!

Gillis   April 16th, 2008 11:41 pm ET

She is doing everything she can right now to make sure that none of them takes the oath of office next January.

Chris   April 16th, 2008 11:40 pm ET

After Obama said several times that these weren't the issues the American people were interested in, the announcers continued and interrupted and argued.

The above poster is right as well, Obama defended Clinton several times and Clinton was continously attacking. She can't say anything positive about anyone unless it benefits her.

Obama
Patriotism
Wright
Bitter comment
Taxes
Being on some panel with a neighbor that was related to bombings when he was 8 yrs old

Hillary
Bosnia
Nothing about Penn
Nothing about offshore accounts
Nothing about NAFTA
Nothing about voting for the War

In my twenty years of voteing i have never seen a debate turn into and all out war on one candiate. ABC owes Obama a lot of aplolgies. It does not suprise me since one of the clinton's former staffers was asking the questions. 50 minutes of disgusting slime attacks by ABC. I guess we now know who ABC is pulling for.

Former Barack Supporter   April 16th, 2008 11:38 pm ET

He got creamed tonight.

FELIPE   April 16th, 2008 11:38 pm ET

Remember, based on two local polls here in the philadelphia area, she won the debate. Another major factor is that Barack Wants to raise tthe capital gains (which is currrently 15%) to 28%. Are you kidding me.
Hillary my dear you are on your way. Prediction; she will win PA by at least 10 points.

L MIAMI FLORIDA   April 16th, 2008 11:38 pm ET

HILLARY WAS FORMIDABLE , ELOQUENT, KNOWLEDGEABLE
JUST PRESIDENTIAL == A KNOCK OUT

BARACK WAS INEXPERIENCED , ANXIOUS , AND SLEAZY

Dianne Salazar   April 16th, 2008 11:37 pm ET

Fifty minutes of questions that have nothing to do with solving America's devasting problems, but tear apart and undermine our political process. This was supposed to be a debate on the issues that matter to our lives. Once again the media has shown a propensity to waste valuable time on devisive non-issues that will not solve even one of the constitutional crisises that we have been facing this last seven years. What about questions to each about their views on the White House condoning torchure at the highest levels, fisa, Supreme Court nominees, signing statements, Procecution Attorneys being politicized? There are plenty of questions that could serve to enlighten the voting population, but instead you served only to divert with idiocy. NOT THIS TIME!!! You wasted our valuable time with trash!!! Shame on you.

Mark   April 16th, 2008 11:37 pm ET

Its clear after tonight that Mrs. Clinton is the best person for the job and a real leader. Sour face Obama needs to drop of race and let hillary get on with the race. Obama tried his best to attack everyone and was off from all the issures. Mrs. Clinton more of a President person that sour face Obama.

Yve   April 16th, 2008 11:36 pm ET

Hopefully after this fiasco one of the news organization will jump on the real news reporting band wagon. There are a lot of people that are sick of the tabloid direction that the msm has taken. For a second there I thought I was watching fauxnews. No, my T.V was tuned to ABC but it won't be for long. I have given up FOX and am mentally relaxed for it. Let me make this clear. Yes I'm an Obama supporter but even if I was supporting Hillary I would be turned off. I've been reading newspapers since the age of 6 and expect the news to be different than the National Inquirer. However lately I can't tell which is which.

Ryan   April 16th, 2008 11:36 pm ET

Where were the questions about NAFTA, Mark Penn??

Brian C from New York   April 16th, 2008 11:36 pm ET

This wasn't really a debate, it was more like a bash Obama for an hour. I really must agree with Obama on this one...we are tired of this. This kind of nonsense make me bitter! Over all however I think this so called debate goes to Obama. He took the high road while Hillary tried to drag him into the mud. This HAS to hurt her over all image and really does make it look like she is desperate.

I went to both camps blogs after the debate...Obamas was full of what I was feeling...that ABC did a terrible job! It was really one sided. No talk about Penn but the flag pin? Come on...

Next I went to Hillary's blog. WOW, is it only women posting over there? They were very happy with her performance and felt the questions (beating up Obama) were finally due. I thought that was a bit funny as we have heard his comments on these non issues soooo many times. They are also looking for polls so they can "help out our girl!"

Bottom line, these 2 candidates are so close on all the important issues!!!!! Why would anyone of their supporters vote for McBush if their candidate doesn't win is proof that RACE and GENDER is playing a HUGE ROLL!

My vote goes to Obama. I will vote for Hillary if she gets the nod but I still don't trust her... she can't be as bad as McCain!

Monica, Texas   April 16th, 2008 11:35 pm ET

If Obama was not vetted before he sure was after this debate...It seemed very one sided. I thought someone should have asked Hillary if she wanted a pillow? I'm not sure if Charlie and George were looking ahead thinking Obama would be demcrat of choice or they wanted to see how "tough" he was under pressure. Either way I thought Obama held his own. Hillary for the most part was not given much of the lime light.

Ryan from Indiana   April 16th, 2008 11:35 pm ET

I thought Hillary's answer on Bosnia was very good.

John   April 16th, 2008 11:35 pm ET

Why was George Stephanopoulos moderating this debate, given his long-standing relationship with the Clintons?

k.m.k.   April 16th, 2008 11:35 pm ET

w hat a tabloid debate. If there is another debate I truly hope that real journalists will ask the questions not Clinton FLUNKYS. hOPE CNN or msnbc get the next one !!!!

Cruiser66   April 16th, 2008 11:34 pm ET

This was the worst debate I have ever seen. It was bias and for the first 63 minutes the moderators played "gotcha" – mostly with Senator Obama. I can't believe these two pathetic excuses for moderators asked Senator Obama about the "weather-underground" person; the "bitter" comment; the "flag pin"; and Rev. Wright. Oh yeah, they asked Clinton about Bosnia. The bias against Senator Obama was unbelievable. The moderators and Clinton disrespected him. Senator Obama refers to her as "Senator Clinton" and she calls him Barak. I won't be watching ABC again as it is now FOX/

Diane   April 16th, 2008 11:34 pm ET

I am actually a Hillary supporter..ok rather- let me put it this way- I voted for Hillary on Feb 5th.

I think today's debate was bad..in the sense- it looked more like Hillary and ABC had a deal to degrade Obama..Well hate to say this abt Hillary..but it did look like that...

I was not comfortable seeing that because ppl will start taking Hillary as a bad candidate here...

having said that- I have made up my mind that i'd vote for Obama is he is the democratic nominee...

Jackie Rogers   April 16th, 2008 11:34 pm ET

She is really destroying not only the Democratic Party, but also her and her husband's legacy. It's almost tragic.

What gets me is that the leaders of the Democratic Party aren't putting more pressure on her to withdraw. We look dumber every election cycle. First we can't get someone to beat Bush, one of the most incompetent leaders ever; then we have to viable candidates and we let this bloodletting continue while McCain can sit back and relax. Can't everyone see that Clinton is doing all the dirty work for him? He can let her attack him and see what sticks. It's pathetic.

Barrington of Cambridge   April 16th, 2008 11:33 pm ET

THE WORST DEBATE EVER!!!!!!

ABC is a B rated network.

George Stephanopolous worked in the Clinton White House and boy did it show tonight. Why would he ask Hannity's (of FOX) question on the Weathemen?

Thank God Barack did his homework to know that Bill Clinton pardoned two of the groups members.

Is Barack VETTED now?

Chic   April 16th, 2008 11:33 pm ET

Billary admitted that Barrack is electable, That's a turn for the good of the DNC.

Talimee   April 16th, 2008 11:33 pm ET

People please get over it!! There is finally a debate in which Obama is the target after 20 debates!! If he is the Democrat against McCain he will be the target of Republicans. Please stop already.

As for me, and focusing on their answers, I remain a strong Clinton supporter. There are too many reasons, but since the economy is my main concern, here are two from that subject: (1) raising capital gains (btw, he said 28% before): many americans own stocks, retirement plans invest in stocks, etc. Raising the capital gains hurts those people. Obama's rationale is that hedge fund managers are taking advantage of it, but the truth is that such a problem can be addressed another way. Hedge Fund managers are making that money because Hedge Funds are structured as partnerships. To simplify it: partnership pay profits to its partners and such profits are categorized as capital gains by these partners when they are taxed as individuals. The way to address the issue is to specifically tax such income as normal income, not capital gains, which can be done directly. I dont want this man to go around raising taxes on our other sources of profit just to address one issue. The American public is already highly taxed. Plus it hurts the investment into companies, which cuts their availability to capital. Ok ok I will stop now.

(2) Social Security. By taking away the cap, Mr. Obama, you are raising the tax these people pay by another 6-12% a year. Mind you, companies pay half of that, so that will be taken into consideration before pay raises or employee benefits are granted. Also, you are creating a trillion dollar of additional income at once, unless you sign a PLEDGE/OATH to the American people that the money will be used SOLELY for social security, I refuse to vote for you. I dont want another trillion dollars to be used for programs that dont work and dont fix social security. Because even though you raise a trillion dollars at once, the problem is delayed and will have to be re-addressed in 10 years. I prefer a committee of experts that can find a solution that will fix the problem, not delay it, while again we get taxed more and more.

Montreal   April 16th, 2008 11:33 pm ET

Two issues perplex me.
1) Why do Clinton supporters say the DNC "rigged" the convention, and also that Obama doesn't allow Mi/Fl their opinion, when Clinton SIGNED a document agreeing not to count Mi/Fl, and SHE is the one being dishonest and not keeping her word? (Would you take a dishonest partner?)
2) What experience does Clinton have over Obama other than being a wife? A failed health bill perhaps?

JAZZ   April 16th, 2008 11:33 pm ET

The tabloid questions needed to be answered because these gaffes are driving the polls and affecting some peoples voting decisions.
After all this is what the media is covering. Both candidates had a chance to clear the air. Now maybe we can get to the important issues
that affect our lives.

Scott Brown Palm Bay Florida   April 16th, 2008 11:33 pm ET

After watching this debate tonight how can any right minded democrat vote for Barack Hussien Obama. This guy truely thinks that sitting down with Iran and negoiating peace is within his power. This is a misguided and dangerous policy that puts the United States and Israel's protection in serious danger. He is so gullible and full of himself that he thinks he has the solution to the worlds problem? You may not like Bush and that's fine democrats but John McCain will not sell out our protection and Isreals to some Christ wannabe. This man has not the experience to run a 7-11 much less the free world. Change will come in the way of whats left in your pocket!!!and yes that is his middle name!!!

Suri   April 16th, 2008 11:32 pm ET

That was a stupid question, how many times do you have to ask the same question, when you know they are not answer that question. There are a lot more important questions than picking VP. . Ask real questions,

A. What are you going to do for the people who lost house?
B. How are thy going to decrease the gas price?
C. How do they are going to store the American people hope?

Come on now, I am sick and tired of the media, you guys need to get real. You get excitied to show when they kill each other.

Charlotte Brown   April 16th, 2008 11:31 pm ET

I think Hillary Clinton is off the mark on her comment on churches. I am a Catholic...I think the sex scandals are terrible, immoral, and the priests should be punished ...but I am still a Catholic. I am not Catholic because of some person, some priest, or Pope. I am a Catholic because it is my belief. It is where I get my affirmation, find my God and it sustains me through thick and thin. I will not let what some man, other than Jesus Christ, alter my religion. So if I left my church because of some of these really stupid immoral men, I'd have to do background checks on every pastor...your religion is your religion, it is not the pastor...but it helps if they can give a good sermon.

Obama is what he is without the comments of his old pastor...let's move on !!!!!! I want to know who the heck to vote for.

White, young, good looking, woman against Obama   April 16th, 2008 11:31 pm ET

carlo   April 16th, 2008 11:31 pm ET

I thought the tone of the debate was a disgrace. I know Obama is a gentleman, but I would have slapped the crap out of Clinton. Even with her negative ratings skyrocketing, even with more and more people mistrusting her, she just could not help herself, along with Clinton cronies Stephanopolous and Gibson. If she thinks that performance is going to win her points, she had better think again. I think her killer instinct is proving to be self-destructive.

Susan   April 16th, 2008 11:30 pm ET

The Clinton legacy is going down the tubes. She is clearly not worthly to lead this nation. WE need an new kind of president, a new kind of leader with moral intregity and a spirit to lead this nation in the right direction. Hillary is the same old, untrustworthy politician. We are at a fork in the Road and yet she still is willing to do and say anything to get elected. She has placed her own desires about the needs of this country!! We need to come together, build a new and caring society that believes in the values we proclaim. I've had enough of Hillary Clinton and her attacks! She is a loser because she cannot win without trying to take her opponents to the gutter. If she can lie to the American people about being shot at by sniper fire, what else is she capable of lying to us about!! How pathetic!!

Bitter   April 16th, 2008 11:30 pm ET

Can't believe how ABC railroaded Obama for the first 50 min of this so called debate.

Terry   April 16th, 2008 11:30 pm ET

The handling of this debate by ABC was a disgrace to journalism. Even Clinton supporters were posting on ABC blogs about how biased it was towards Clinton and how the attacks were so relentless towards Obama but apologetic towards Clinton, it was just so sickening it took everything just to keep the vomit from working its way out of my mouth. ABC was just dropped from my weekly network viewing; I am going to give CNN a chance to provide fair and balanced journalism.

PhilT   April 16th, 2008 11:29 pm ET

Senator Clinton had a rough night:

1) She was forced to say (3 times YES) that Obama is electable. Now let's see her sell to the superdelegates that he is not. That would be very hypocritical.

2)

Ryan, Champlin MN   April 16th, 2008 11:29 pm ET

I'm just wondering what's her arguement now to the super delegates.???? I thought it was that he's NOT electable. I quess she doesn't have an excuse any more for the SD to over ride the will of the vote of Americans ..ABC's debate should have been called let's remind everyone of the mud slinging of the campaign. George and Charlie should be ashamed of themselves for playing into this ratings garbage. Look at the polls NOBODY cares but the media !!!!!!! I'm getting bitter toward the media .

Rich   April 16th, 2008 11:28 pm ET

I couldn't believe how the questions were so biased against Obama. I don't think Obama was on the top of his game, but it seemed like ABC wanted to bring him down. It made me a little sick and very sad to have watched ABC be so.... Fox News like. ABC should be ashamed of itself for it's horrible way it conducted this interview, and Hillary should be ashamed of herself for going negative. I commend Obama for trying to stay above it all.

Let's hope PA helps end this instead of prolong the long slide that we have been seeing that only ends with the Republicans winning.

Really, Mr.Obama should just man up, and quit now, to save our party from splitting any worse than it is. He knows, that with all of his un-Patriotic baggage, he can't beat John McCain. Or any republican, for that matter. Hillary is our only chance, to win the G.E.. Everyone knows it. Being stubborn, isn't helping our party. Obama just brings disgrace to himself, and the party. I hope Obama and his pasror, Rev Wright, heard the Pope, bless the United States of America, and all Americans today. I also hope it didn't make them too angry.

She won the debate.
Obama was stumbling all throught his Wright issue and Ayers terrorism ties.
I think the Bosnia thing is not as big an issue as his are.
She was clear and decisive like a good President should be.
Her pointed remarks about Iran and Israel were very impressive
I hope the DNC and delegates were watching

Go Hillary!

Leano   April 16th, 2008 11:20 pm ET

May I remind people that Senator Clinton used this politically sometime before Texas and Ohio. She played politics with it. Even Bill Clinton did. They basically were capitalising on the idea that since voters liked them both, if they told voters they'd give Obama the VP slot, then voters would pick Clinton as the nominee. She'd said that she'd offer the VP position to Obama. Bill even put up electoral vote analysis on if they were to run together. Now, she's changed since.

gary mitchell   April 16th, 2008 11:20 pm ET

This ambush in prime time was the worst display of yellow journalism I have witnessed in my entire life. I will never watch the ABC network in my home again. The behavior of the moderators was disgusting. George go home. I don't shop at Walmart and I won't watch ABC.

Phil from Guadalupe, Ca.   April 16th, 2008 11:19 pm ET

Hi Venus,
The problem is that Barack Obama is trying to deflect the issues and not take them head on.
I call that poor judgement. I do not care of HRC, she at least admitted she used poor judgement in the Bosnia sniper fire flap. Something that Sen. Obama has yet to do with Jeremiah Wright, Bill Ayers, and his Bay Area secret speech.
Let's face it, Senator Obama will only try to deflect the issues. That is not the type of politician we, democrats need.

Philly Kid   April 16th, 2008 11:19 pm ET

I am not a die hard Obama fan, but I can't help but feel he was violated in this debate. It was far less of a debate than an indictment. He tried to keep their blows above belt but they just had to nail him and I must confess, they did.

Mary Parker   April 16th, 2008 11:19 pm ET

This so called debate was no more than a street gang fight. Hillary had her boys to jump Obama, but he still came out smelling like the candidate more likely to beat McCain. Maybe this was her chance to look like a veep for McCain, she sure not looking like a presidential candidate.

A Proud and Free American   April 16th, 2008 11:19 pm ET

This is one of the most unfair debates i've ever seen

How can you have a past Clinton advisor asking the candidates question – isn't that a clear bias

Obama should have withdrawn from this unfair conspiracy. Shame on ABC. Those guys have no ethics.

Obama stood up well under thier attacks.

With all the negatives going on in country RIGHT NOW: Healthcare, Education, Environment (world), Gas, Mortgage, Poverty (etc) ABC instead chooses to focus on the non-issue that wouldn't put food on the table. ABC did a major inustice to the people by carrying on like some tabloid junk off the newstand. The idea to have George S. as a moderator should have been an indication of how this debate would play out. I actually wish CNN had this debate.

With that said this was simply the; Worst. Debate. Ever.

Jennifer Wilson   April 16th, 2008 11:18 pm ET

Obama lied again to America when asked what he would tell the superdelegates why they should support him. He claims he is above taking money from lobbyists and he keeps on telling the lies. The link below supports that he is connected with lobbyists.

Kim P.   April 16th, 2008 11:17 pm ET

Well I guess I won't have to turn to Fox news for "tabloid" news. I now can turn on ABC and listen to George and Charlie. My question, who was the debate between? ABC/George and Charlie vs. Sen. Obama? Why have Hillary there? It is not just Hillary feeding the Republicans, now ABC has joined in. What about questions that concern us; for example why am I paying more each week for gas and food and should I be concerned about loosing my house? When are you going to find Osama Bin Laden and end this war? What are you going to do about the rising drop out rate amongst our youth? Should I forget about retirement and any money I have invested? These are questions I am concerned about. Not if Obama wears a flag pin on his lapel. By the way, has anyone noticed Hillary doesn't wear one either. Yet no one questions her about being patriotic? Heard enough about Rev. Wright. Who is this guy with the Weather Men back during the 70's. Will he find Osama Bin Laden? Come on, this is becoming Obama vs. Hillary& Bill & McCain& the media. Whose next? The devil?

Charles   April 16th, 2008 11:17 pm ET

It only makes sense to me, Hillary Clinton's campaign now and statements in the debate this evening, is that she has decided that she cannot get the nomination. Understanding that she is not going to get the nomination, she is determined that no other Democrat is going to win the general election if it is not going to be her.

female grad student NYC   April 16th, 2008 11:16 pm ET

These debates show the true colors of the candidates – Obama is obviously worse than his campaign makes him out to be while Hillary is better than hers!!!!

Hillary did great! She is such an intelligent and tough woman she's so inspiring!

Kenneth M.   April 16th, 2008 11:15 pm ET

Obama was such a gracous guy tonight. He could have creamed her but he knows that does not work, it just feels good but plays to the lowest of us. Hillary just had to be rude and it will come back to haunt her. When asked if he could win she said yes yes yes.

Zina   April 16th, 2008 11:15 pm ET

Why was George allowed to moderate this debate? He was the communications director under the Clinton Administration. I don't like feeling deceived by the media. Obama did only as well as he could have.

Hillary said, "I am a lot of things, but I am not dumb."

That is an improvement on her usual statements. At least this one was half true.

It is true that Hillary is, "a lot of things" (including a habitual liar).

It is a lie that you are not dumb.

Ryan   April 16th, 2008 11:14 pm ET

Obama refrained from attacking Hillary on her obvious Bosnia lie. But she took every opportunity to dig in on controversies surrounding much more minor issues. That right there tells you all you need to know about their personal character.

Tur   April 16th, 2008 11:14 pm ET

I'm not sure who Obama was debating. Was he debating Clinton or the moderators? I have to admit, CNN's debates have been the most "balanced" thus far. Obama was put on the defensive time and again about his patriotism while the moderators let her skate on questions of Mark Penn's involvement with the Colombians and Bill's Asian connections. Sad, very sad!

Sliv   April 16th, 2008 11:12 pm ET

It's simply amazing how the newsmen manage to win the power struggle to evade meaningful discussion of the issues. The candidates give the cues loud and clear and are ignored. Single issue voters' issues, such as 2nd amendment rights vs. gun control, are the only ones getting any persistent airing at all. Wow, there are such huge issues! The candidates and the voters know it, and the news media do the repetitious easy....Why do we even watch?
Barack Obama consistently rises above the fray, calls it politics as usual, and Clinton doesn't: wallows in the mud of the moment.
Obama won this debate and he will win the nomination and the general election.

Karen - Branson   April 16th, 2008 11:12 pm ET

The REAL story is about the tabloit style debate. For over half hour the most useless questions and accusations I've ever seen about NOTHING! It wasn't until the second half that any issues were addressed and by that time 1/2 the viewers changed channels rather than watch a trash "debate". People want to see ISSUES.

but then we learn that one of the moderators used to be in President Clinton's cabinet? Isn't that a conflict of interest? So that's why Hillary was smiling.

PLEASE CNN...either you or MSNBC exclusively handle debates from now on because ABC can't seem to find decent moderators.

If Barack Obama is smart, he will NOT let the DNC make him use Hillary as VP. She is totally NOT in sync with the change we need in Washington! Her tactics are proof enough she has no business in the "new" politics our country desperately needs.

jimmy vekmen   April 16th, 2008 11:11 pm ET

That should be the last debate between the two Democrats and am glad that both acknowledged that either one is electable.,although it would have shocked the viewers if Clinton and Obama both committed themselves to having the the runner-up as their VP
running mate. I believe Hillary will not hesitate for one moment to have Obama as her running mate if she were to win the nomination.
I have my doubts about Obama choosing Hillary as his VP running mate. Which brings me to the subject of Bill Richardson, whom I believe from the moment he switched his support from Hillary to Obama, that he was running for VP. AND THAT, people would be a disaster for Obama.

Matt, Austin Tx   April 16th, 2008 11:10 pm ET

This was a very well conducted debate. No "rah rah" applause and the moderators asked direct, tough questions (as opposed to the candidates attacking each other). Each candidate had plenty of time to answer questions from the moderators and rebut arguments presented by the other candidate.

Also, both candidates presented themselves as wanting to unify their party's effort in winning the presidency.

Congratulations to ABC for a job well done! We need more of the same in this (and every) election year.

Julie N,Naperville, IL   April 16th, 2008 11:09 pm ET

I couldn't watch the debate because I knew Billary was going to come out with more BS against Barack..Please still keep in mind that she is desperate and will do ANYTHING to win..I did watch Keith Olberman afterwards and I do have to laugh...Keith interviewed Senator Bob Casey who was nothing more then a gentlemen when asked what he thought about the debate...the only person who he interviewed for Billary was Howard Wolfson..who was a complete idiot in his remarks..while I feek Barack had a hard night, I still doubt any of the numbers will change...Good Luck to you Barack..I am behind you 100%....

If you really cared, if you really understood people – you would understand how a person who was not allowed to go to school, who had to sit in the back of the bus, who had to drink from the colored fountain, who was called colored but is now called black (after first attached all sorts of negative atributes to the word black) – would be angry. But keep the campaign going and you will get exactly what you deserve – to spend a lot of time at home with Bill.
At first Presidency was a distinct possibility, then the vice presidency but you have screwed that up too. KJeep it going and you wil screw up your entile political career.

The ABC debate was a waste of my time. All the moderators were interested in doing was going over the same crap I have already heard enough of. How many times does Senator Obama have to explain himself? He has given all the explanation that is necessary. And when will it be time for Hillary to explain her poor decisions....well I can tell you it wasn't going to happen tonight...it was the most one sided debate I've seen. I kept waiting on Charlie and George to ask Hillary if she needed her pillow fluffed and another shot of Crown Royale. She is so negative and seems to enjoy stabbing her fellow democrat in the back over and over........ I'm ready for all this drama to finished and to see the only honest, inspiring, and intelligent candidate get in the White House. Hang in there Mr. Obama this nightmare is almost over and when the dust settles YOU will be the people's choice.

This was a horrible debate. I couldn't believe ABC actually thought this was a debate. Where was the substance? I'm an Obama supporter but I wanted to hear both talk about pertinent issues. However, I do think they had it out for Obama. I don't care about snipers, bittergate, Wright, $109million. (I'm tired of hearing about them). I want to hear about specifics and not tabloid fodder. Those 2 clowns call themselves "journalists"??????

They need to take lessons from the reporters from CNN and MSNBC. The ABC journalists look like they should actually be on Access Hollywood or something like that. It was horrible.

James   April 16th, 2008 11:05 pm ET

ABC should be ashamed. They directed cheap shots, virtually all at Barack. Hillary has apparently cried enough about being vetted–which really hasn't happened except for the most obvious self-inflicted wounds. I certainly hope the voters can see this this...a tabloid-like, insinuation-laden, cynical or hollow series of attacks that will feed the pundits for days to come–What a waste of time, and a real loss for our democracy. ABC should issue an apology!!!

Mike   April 16th, 2008 11:04 pm ET

Hillary responded to Bosnia question "I may be (called) many things but I'm not dumb," I can add to this one as a news viewer "I may be regular folks but my husband and I am not dumb".

Sexiest and inquisitor, it's written all over.

Why can media mock women candidate (never apologized) yet they pick on her mistakes and soooooooooo easy on Obama, wow.

Real men vote for Hillary.
Real men don't make excuses.

Natasha   April 16th, 2008 11:03 pm ET

I can not believe how bad the moderators were. They were not balanced at all, they cornered Obama the whole first hour with hardly any questions for Hillary.

That was ridiculus. However, what do you expect from Clinton's former advisor?

Elizabeth   April 16th, 2008 11:03 pm ET

Sen. Obama wants change. Sen. Clinton wants to fight everybody. I don't trust anything she says.

God Bless the wonderful people of Pennsylvania for putting an end to this and vote for Barack. Give him the opportunity to turn this country around. He has what it is going to take to do that and lower gasoline, create jobs, and bring our great military home. We can't let this opportunity slip by us. Together we can all work together.

Democrats Are What's Left   April 16th, 2008 11:01 pm ET

THAT was the absolute WORST debate of this entire election process. ABC News has spent this entire election year on the side of Hillary Clinton. No matter what she says, they find a reason to excuse it.

Tonight, for 45 minutes, the slanted ABC News team could find NOTHING to talk about that would benefit Americans in trying to learn more about each candidate. How pitiful it was. Sen. Obama may just have well gone on Faux News for a debate because that's just how "fair" and "impartial" ABC News showed itself to be.

On the positive side, Sen. Obama pushed back against the notion that NEGATIVE politics is what we Americans want to endure. NO, WE DON'T! Two minutes on energy policy? What a waste of our time. Are these very important issues not important to ABC News or do they simply need the ratings?

I sit out here in a small town in Illinois wondering why ABC News can't give facts, and this is every single day on their broadcasts. This is why I stopped watching BOTH ABC "News" and "Faux News", because they are no longer considered a "News" channel but a tabloid organization.

It should be the goal of any "News" organization to report the news, NOT fabricate it.

Both candidates were asked questions that do not HELP AMERICANS figure out how we are going to create more jobs, better healthcare, fix our economy or get the hell out of Iraq. NEITHER candidate deserved the type of questions that ABC "News" decided was important. It was a waste of their time and ours, and this is the LAST time that I tune my channel into ABC again, because they do not have MY best interests in mind.

I'll give this one more college try! (Admittedly I had to go to Huffington Post to be listened to!)

I found tonight's debate very frustrating to watch. I know that George S. was on the Clinton payroll, so I should give him some slack, but the cards were definitely against Obama tonight.

I found it so depressing to watch Hillary gaze patronizingly at the camera and continue her sleazy statements that I used my remote to go to a romantic comedy on TCM to relieve my high blood pressure.

This was NO debate. It was ABC pandering to the Clinton's. It was disgusting!!

One of the best things cleared up in this debate that will (or should) SILENCE the Hillabots who keep saying " He is unelectable" "He Cannot win"

FOR THE RECORD Hillary Clinton, YOUR Candidate said in answer to the question " Can Obama beat McCain in the gerneral election"? Hillary said "YES YES YES" ( after taking the long way around trying to avoid saying it as usual. Cudos to George S for being one of the few in the press who makes her ACTUALLY answer.

That is all!

PJ   April 16th, 2008 11:00 pm ET

I'm both amazed and disgusted by the one sided nature of the questions from the moderators. 50 minutes into the broadcast Obama had been challenged with 4 negative attack questions, whereas Clinton had only been given 1. I will not be a viewer of ABC news going forward, not if this is their idea of an unbiased debate.

Obama Supporter in NC   April 16th, 2008 11:00 pm ET

That was the worst debate ever hosted. ABC is pathetic. They spent the first 40 minutes attacking Obama. Not one questions about NAFTA, Columbia.
Absolutely pathetic!!!!

Ted Canada   April 16th, 2008 10:59 pm ET

Saw the debate and would say 60 40 in favour of Obama.

Mina   April 16th, 2008 10:58 pm ET

This was the WORST debate ever! ABC made a mess of it. They spent half the time discussing irrelevant issues and gossip. When they finally got around to the issues it was an Obama lynching all the way. The man could not finish an answer without being interrupted by the moderators. And what the hell? "How are you going to use past presidents?" What kind of question is that? Do they realize there is a recession going on in the real world, people are losing jobs and homes, and there are people dying in nobody's land way out there?

No wonder the public booed at the end of the debate. ABC deserved it. If you read the posts on their blogg you'll see that 99% of the viewers (Clinton supporters included) say the debate was the worst of this primary, if not ever. Nothing of importance could come out of it. Does ABC think everyone is stupid?

Lou   April 16th, 2008 10:57 pm ET

That was the worst debate I ever saw. Bosnia, wright, and the american pin crud is already old tabloid news. They really wasted time that could have been very imformative with questions about issues they would have if they were the president. ABC doesn't get to do debates anymore.

I must say ones again hillary seemed very on when talking issues.
But at the same time I think I now understand why this has became a super market tablod primary. He cant talk the issues. First his campaine was all about HOPE. then CHANGE the YES WE CAN. all nothing issues. not how we make these changes and differences then it was Wright, her in Bosina now where all just BITTER but I also forgot TYPICAL. its true he didn't vote for war and was against it . but he couldn't vote he wasnt there he never heard the things that were told behind doors and the things most of them we getting fed. So for the most part he Just cant talk the issues. did he ever answer the handgun question, did he give a good explination on Iraq ? I just dont KNow

Glen from Atlanta   April 16th, 2008 10:54 pm ET

I believe that the Democratic presidential "debate" was bias against Barack Obama. The moderators consistantly put him in the "hotseat", slamming him with questions about the many allegations made by the media (which he had already addressed numerous of times), but proceeded to ask Hillary Clinton primarily about her policies. The only time she was in the "hotseat" was when they asked her about her experience in Bosnia. However, they neglected to bring up her involvement with NAFTA, which put so many of the people she claims to represent in Pennsylvania, out of work due to their jobs being outsourced. However, Barack Obama was still successful in addressing each and every question to the point that they do not need to be readdressed, and in giving a more compelling debate.

Santiago   April 16th, 2008 10:54 pm ET

I can not believe that a commentator in other network said that did not like the way Obama was treated...That comment completely prove the bias of the networks towards Obama.

Those kinds of commends were not made when Hillary repeatedly was attached over and over again on debates.

Wayne Braffman   April 16th, 2008 10:53 pm ET

An absolute travesty of a debate. ABC should be ashamed. I pray that this is the straw that breaks the public's tolerance for this kind of discourse that usurps the place of true dialogue and debate. Shame on you, ABC, shame on you.

Nathan   April 16th, 2008 10:52 pm ET

I hope Obama keeps trashing the economic legacy from the Bill Clinton years. I hope this Harvard Academic keeps telling bitter Americans about how he understands foreign policy more than anyone else and how he is the change that he has been waiting for. I used to think Obama was eloquent, but his stuttering changed that for me. I used to think he was relevant, but then his trashing of the Clinton's in deference to the voodoo economist Reagan showed he was a chameleon. I used to think he was a leader, but now I know that if Obama is elected President, the US will unfortunately have 3 successive President's who are much worse than the great American people deserve. O'Bumma!

This was the worst tabloid debate I have ever seen. This was a mugging in disguise by the moderaters. Geroge And Charlie should be ashamed of how this was handled. Hannity handed off a stupid question to George and he asked it! When did Hannity become a member of ABC..I was truly wanting to see a debate on the issues, not tablod questions. I have now crossed ABC evening New and Geroge Stephanopolis off my watch list. It wa almost as though Hillary had knowledge of the questions she was asked. To hammer someone on a pin, or a remote intangible relationship is ludicrous. All of these questions were asked and answered. Why doesn't ABC just come out and say Hillary is the next POTUS..Disgusting!! Barack still has my vote!!

I thought the anchors made it a point to to try to trap Obama and it seemed like they were overpushing some of the screwed up notions that the republicans and clintons have been pushing the last week

Really boring debate. One of the worst debates in the last year and a half. This debate is not going to change anything. Some of the questions were really irrelevant. Miss CNN's debates.

Anyway. Obama looks like he is secured the nomination. HIllary should start considering her only exit strategy. To Exit gracefully and support Obama like she pledges.

I cannot imagine Obama ever choosing Hillary as a running mate. The way that she has managed her campaign, her inconsistent messaging, poor leadership choice, and inability to rally funding from the people is completely off shot from his successes.

chris   April 16th, 2008 10:44 pm ET

Neither candidate can commit because there is too much time left in this election. Senator Clinton will win PA by 15-20 points and then win the majority of the remaining states. This will take this race to the end. She will likely win the popular vote and then the super delegates will realize that she has the best chance to win the general election. Senator Obama should consider the role of VP.

I believe it would be in the best interest of the party for the two to run together. We will hold the white house for the next 16 years.

change1   April 16th, 2008 10:43 pm ET

ABCNEWS, I have lost respect for you. You should have allowed the candidates more opportunity to discuss important matters than recalling matters before IOWA etc. THIS IS THE WORST DEBATE EVER! Take more training from CNN and others. You scored a D in this and wasted my time.

Voter from VA   April 16th, 2008 10:43 pm ET

Obama resisted the temptation to launch personal attacks despite being under attack by Clinton. Good job.

The ABC team did a really poor job. They did not ask questions about the economy until 9:03, an hour after the start of the debate. They were argumentative and disrupted Obama a few times before he had a chance to finish his sentence. For example, he did say that he would exempt people who make less than 200-250K from the raised SS tax but Gibson still disrupted him to point out incorrectly that he would be raising taxes on middle income families.

Anyways... no ground breaking development... Clinton is still behind and will not be able to catch up no matter what...

ABC needs to fire both George and Charles Gibson. I hated their questioning. Very unfair and unnecessary. I have now lost a lot of respect for Clinton for playing along.

NAtive American Woman   April 16th, 2008 10:42 pm ET

its pretty obvious they have alot of animosity toward each other so why would either one pick the other as a running mate?

Chris H.   April 16th, 2008 10:41 pm ET

It seems to me that tonight Sen. Clinton admitted she was a lair...like her husband...

Jody   April 16th, 2008 10:38 pm ET

I think it was a very good debate. Cinton and Obama both did very well, but I give the edge to this one to Clinton.

She not only seemed more detailed and experienced in her policy answers, she successfully cast shadows of doubt on Obama's experience and electibility.

Overall, very good.

dEMABRAT   April 16th, 2008 10:38 pm ET

Sen. Clinton did a wonderful job tonight. That is the Hillary we want. She was ready with answers and a clear direction inwhich to lead the nation.

Clinton 2008!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shannel Ryan   April 16th, 2008 10:38 pm ET

Debate was a total SHAM. It was as if Hillary has the script and Charlie spent his time battling Obama.

Ridiculous.

Michael in Columbus, Ohio   April 16th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

I liked that question, even thouggh they should had known better neither one of them would commit ot being VP, especially Barack and he is the delegate leader. i think some people in the Media are just as silly as some of the campaigns, oh wait i just remembered, this is "SILLY SEASON"

Obama BOMBS in DEbate!   April 16th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

Tonights debate showed once again who has a handle on the issues. Not to mention Obama complained about Clinton's criticism of him- only to be called out that HIS CAMPAIGN releases a barage of emails every day criticizing Clinton........I think he's a phony!

chris isner   April 16th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

Ok, so Clinton's argument for a superdelegate override of the popular vote is now dust. Asked about her feelings on Obama's candidacy now, in her own words: "Yes, yes, yes!" Hehehe, Obama, what a stud.

Keith Cornelius   April 16th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

Clearly Obama lost this debate, he was on defense and stuttered on most of his answers like he was just thrown a curve ball......Hillary messed up saying he is electable, which he is not...

Mike from Calgary   April 16th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

The only 3AM phone call that Hillary can deal with is when Bill calls home to say he's working late in the office. She didn't even bother to read the report to her recommending against authorizing the use of military force in Iraq. She just voted blindly along with Bush. But it wasn't a mistake. I saw the tax return. The Clinton;s aren't interested in public service just self service – ask Chelsea or Monica or Jeniffer Flowers or Paula Jones. Ask Hillary's Rose Law Firm, the White Water victims or Sinbad. How do you know when a Clinton is lying. That all depends on what the meaning of "is" is. Do you mean a "mismatch between her words and the facts"?
Hillary latest gripe. There she goes again as Raegan would say.
Mike

Gary Stebnitz   April 16th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

Clearly Obama was off his game tonight. Even my children could see that Clinton had him for lunch. And yet, CNN's minions ala David Gergen and crowd still stick up for him

Eddie G   April 16th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

Obama was presidential. Hillary was a whining pit bull.

hillary 08:   April 16th, 2008 10:36 pm ET

Another night of questioning why anyone in the world would vote for obama.... stuttering, lame, weak....

Hillary again delivers what I want to hear! Period.

Let's VOTE HILLARY Pennsylvania!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

marie   April 16th, 2008 10:36 pm ET

Hillary was phenomenal during the debate!! She won!! Superdelegates take note. Hillary is the one who can win in November!!

MD   April 16th, 2008 10:36 pm ET

The best thing Clinton can do for America is to step aside and let the healing begin.

When she was explaining her lies about her experience in Bosnia, she lied again, and said that she has talked about it "a couple of times." She has repeatedly injected this lie into her stump speeches.

Even when she is attempting to "come clean," she cannot help herself, and lies to make the original lie seem inconsequencial.

I think it is worse to downright lie, and continue to lie, than making a statement that might (or might not) be perceived as elitist.

Hillary, with her 130 M bank account, has no business calling anyone else elitist.

Worst.Debate.Ever   April 16th, 2008 10:36 pm ET

This was a sorry excuse for a "debate". It was so dull and there was not even a question about healthcare! There was barely a mention of Iraq- which btw should have been huge since more Iraqi soldiers repoted today are leaving their posts.

Worst.Debate.Ever.

I will give it to CNN. They even do a better job! Ha!

Dave   April 16th, 2008 10:35 pm ET

hmmm....how many times have we seen an American flag lapel pin on Hillary's well-tailored pantsuits? Along with Barack, I'm tired of these meaningless, garbage politics.

stephen, ca   April 16th, 2008 10:34 pm ET

Hillary nailed this debate... She will blow obama out of the water in the remaining primaries!

ANTI CLINTONS   April 16th, 2008 10:33 pm ET

That thing called Clinton just lies through her teeth, she doesn't want Obama to win if he wins the primaries as the lib candidate. She will do everytging she can to steal the votes and then lose to McCain.

where the beef?   April 16th, 2008 10:31 pm ET

Obama friends are bombers (weatherman), hate mongers (Rev Wright), and slum lords (Rezko). Not to mention his wife who thinks "America is just mean!" Out of touch, bad judgement, and no experience just what we need another George Bush!!!

Marc (Canada)   April 16th, 2008 10:31 pm ET

It's curtains for the Democratic Party.

Patrick   April 16th, 2008 10:31 pm ET

In the nearly 50 years of televised presidential debates, this night will go down in history as being the most incompetent and unprofessional ever presented to the American public. If nothing else, having a moderator with a clear conflict of interests is abhorrent. Both moderators showed little respect for either candidate.

Get this through your skulls, lazy and incompetent media of this country. CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, FoxNews etc. We the American people, despite prevailing opinion, are intelligent. We are sick of "gotcha" political coverage. To have wasted this golden opportunity on nearly an hour of pointless nonsubstantive questions is an insult and travesty. ABCNews should apologize to the American people.

Scott C   April 16th, 2008 10:30 pm ET

I thought it was a good debate, but I think the moderators were unequally hard on Obama.

It spent half of its entire duration putting Obama on the offense with one thing after the other, none of them having to do with a serious issue.

Coming off the heels of the last debate where Clinton openly whined about it being unfair to her, we see the next debate give Obama a MUCH harder time than they gave Clinton.

They gave him some loaded questions too.

Do you think Wright is as patriotic as you are was one of the questions.

What kind of question is that?

It was enough to put Obama through the fire on bitter-gate, but they brought up several more controversies as well.. and spent half the debate hammering him on them.

Hardly balanced.

Though you aren't going to see Obama whine about it.

USAF Sr. Airman   April 16th, 2008 10:30 pm ET

In my opinion, Obama explained his remarks very well. When the comment was first brought up, I was very confused by the meaning. Tonight he explained that in politics, when current topics and concerns are constantly ignored, people turn to guns and religion politically as topics that are constant. It's a good point. Gun rights and religion are always being brought up.

MD   April 16th, 2008 10:30 pm ET

Hillary has now publicly announced that Obama is electable. "Yes, yes, yes," she said.

How can she now go to the superdelegates and say that he is not electable?

I hope that if she continues to insist in private that she has a better chance against McCain, the superdelegates can see her hypocrisy.

Zoinks   April 16th, 2008 10:30 pm ET

"I'm going to do everything I possibly can to make sure that one of us takes the oath of office next January,"

And by "everything" she means stabbing your Democratic opponent in the back with a carving knife.

Alice   April 16th, 2008 10:29 pm ET

I thought they both did well.

I suppose alot will depend on how the media spins it.

Key West Sun   April 16th, 2008 10:29 pm ET

He still won't answer the question! Rev Wright was a mairne well so was Ted Bundy. No answer, no vote from me.

Kimberly   April 16th, 2008 10:29 pm ET

This issue about the "bitter" comments is simply ridiculous. What he said was true. Pennsylvania voters need to elect someone who can be trusted. Come out in record numbers and support the best man in this race.

Go Obama!!!

Ken Austin, TX   April 16th, 2008 10:28 pm ET

Honestly, how could anyone in their right minds even consider the idea of either of these candidates serving as the others' vice president? Clearly, they have opposing viewpoints on certain key issues, and their characters couldn't be more different. Obama is clearly a more upright and honest person who promotes transparency and fairness and Hillary....well, she just isn't that.

Also, if Barack wins the nomination and has Hillary as his running mate, his campaign would forever be tarnished. Hillary represents everything that Barack is against and his campaign would be viewed as a negative campaign after Hillary instills her old-fashioned tactics.

No Obama/Clinton 08'.

notfooledhere   April 16th, 2008 10:28 pm ET

Hillary, I'm surprised you even let your buddies finish their questions before you started answering. You know, I hope someone finds the proof that you knew the questions prior to this debate. That will be the nail in your coffin.

Obama, thank you again, for showing us what a president truly looks like. I look forward to serving under you sir.

Obama Tanked the Debate   April 16th, 2008 10:28 pm ET

If MSNBC's FIrst Read can admit Obama tanked in the debate, CNN should admit it too. Obama got beat up tonight. I just don't understand why Obama wouldn't simply answer "Yes or No" when asked about the flag and other questions...

Johnny Flint   April 16th, 2008 10:28 pm ET

This debate was poorly organized and carried out. This was the last debate between the two democratic nominees. What should have occurred was a debate about the issues in depth. What happened was a circus sideshow. ABC is going to be slammed by CNN tomorrow for their disgraceful showing and ruining the last debate. I am upset. Obama had to interpose and teach ABC about the urgency of addressing issues of the American people and not the media lens, which dumbs down America.
Compared to other major developed countries, The United States has more media coverage of useless irrelevancies than the rest. This is unfair. Look at how much airtime Paris Hilton receives compared to the real status of our country regarding such categories as scientific discoveries and technological advances. It is all corporate and entertainment industries who control the media. If there were as many educational and relevant issues as there are irrelevant ones, covered in the media then people who try to be like those fakeries in the news, would aspire to do something real with their lives.
None of this beauty = thin anorexic people would be around, so many problems fabricated from this entertainment and corporate media coverage would be non-existent. All this fast food and genetically engineered food and all sorts of other scientific issues would be well known and when the people are informed, they cannot be tricked or duped into becoming slaves of those in current financial and governmental power. Our country has a disgusting voter turnout rate. America is the land with streets paved with gold and dreams become reality, or so it was. Look at all the unnecessary problems that currently plague our country. Why does the media always shove irrelevant things into our faces 24/7 365 for life times? It is disturbing on an astronomical level.

Sarah   April 16th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

Yes, Obama 08'. No Hillary Clinton!!!!!!!

where the beef?   April 16th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

Maybe the reason he thinks people attend church because they are bitter is because that is what he learned from Rev. Wright!!!

sophia nyc   April 16th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

Demcrats united in 2008.

Melissa in PA   April 16th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

So who "won" the debate?

Susan MO   April 16th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

We listened and Obama still, without coming out & saying it, implies what he originally said to the people of Pennsylvania.

America does not need a president who insults the people.

HILLARY for President!!!!!

Hillary 08!

Silly Season   April 16th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

That was one of the most useless debates I have ever witnessed. The ABC moderators were awful. Almost made me yearn for Ross Perot. Where are you Ross?

Kobe, LA   April 16th, 2008 10:26 pm ET

The blogs are all talking about this quote from Hillary....
in 1995 at Camp David in a meeting talking about "Reagan Republicans", she said to Bill and everyone present, "screw 'em...you don't owe them anything." Apparently, she was angry that Southern voters had delivered the majority in the Congress to Newt and Gang. My how times have changed...

Shame. Turn the page.

jo   April 16th, 2008 10:26 pm ET

Can someone tell George Stephanopoulos that, He doesn't work for Clintons anymore.

where the beef?   April 16th, 2008 10:26 pm ET

Obama still does not get it. People don't go to church because they are bitter!!!

Susan in Pennsylvania   April 16th, 2008 10:25 pm ET

I am absolutely appalled by this "debate" this evening.

What a piling-on by biased mediators. I appreciated Obama's attempts to turn the questions back to real issues, but the Charlie and George just wouldn't let him. I expected the same grilling of Clinton, but it never came.

They should be really proud. What crap.

Ernest Pennsylvania   April 16th, 2008 10:25 pm ET

The worst debate i've seen yet in this primary. The commentators spent too much time focusing on matters that have nothing to do with either one of the canidates policies and plans for the country.

SEN. CLINTON ADMITTING THAT SENATOR OBAMA IS ELECTABLE!

tigerakabj   April 16th, 2008 10:22 pm ET

That was the worst debate I have ever seen! And the guy at the end? 100% bias. No matter, Barack will be the president.

Jacqueline, NY   April 16th, 2008 10:22 pm ET

I just watched the debate and thought that Hillary was campaigning for Bill. All she talked about was how it was in the 1990's. Has she forgotten that this is 2008? It is really time for a CHANGE! I hope that this is over after the Pennsylvania primary. I am sick of Hillary!

REPUBLICAN   April 16th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

THE MOST RIDICULOUS DEBATE EVER!!!

Dean   April 16th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

This was absolutely the WORST debate I have EVER seen. What type of questions were those? Can George ask questions on the issues! I want to learn about the issues, the real problems we face in America. This is what happens when you have a sub-par "local news" type news station to deliver true news. I am so disappointed by those pathetic questions. My goodness. CNN, MSNBC, please PLEASE do ALL you can to host any remaining debates or debates from now until the return of Jesus. This was just disgusting.
