(CNN) — Neither Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama would commit Wednesday when asked in a debate if they would take the other as their running mate should they win the nomination.

Both candidates responded to the first question of the debate with smiles, prompting laughter from the audience. After a moment, Obama said he was happy to respond.

"I think it's premature at this point for us to talk about who vice presidential candidates will be, because we're still trying to determine who the nominee will be." he said.

Clinton echoed those comments. "I'm going to do everything I possibly can to make sure that one of us takes the oath of office next January," she said. "I think that has to be the overriding goal, whatever we have to do."

Each candidate said they thought the other was capable of winning the presidency.

Obama I love you sir. But you have been taught a lesson….They are out to get you and you need to be prepared for anything.

mat   April 17th, 2008 3:09 am ET

The debate was poorly moderated. The 1st half of the debate was in my opinoin on tabloid fodder. Considering that George Stephanoupolus was a member of the Clinton team, I'm somewhat suspect about his role. The last part of the debate was more focus but rushed simply because they spent so much time and effort on Rev Wright, bittergate, flaggate and the 60s radicals. I mean none of this helps me at the pump nor puts food on my table , etc. I think HRC exposed herself with her 'umbrella' proposal; that makes her looks worser than Bush. In order to implement that proposal, she'd have to overide the constitution. In light of the stacked format, I think Obama stood his ground and jabbed back when needed

Cal nig   April 17th, 2008 3:04 am ET

HRC should back out of the race since she cannot beat Obama instead playing spoiler game. I guess she may be realising that Obama will be the next President hence her agreeing that one of them would be sworn in by end of the year.

The whole debate was Gotcha debate. After 20 debates, does anyone think there is anything we don't know about Hillary and Obama.
I found Obama to be very honest regardless of what his mistakes were. I can never trust Hillary and Bill and should drop out so that Obama can get a vp and get vetted before Nov.

mark,allentown,pa   April 17th, 2008 2:56 am ET

How come Hillary attack Obama on his blunders and Obama didn't attack her on her major blunders?
Is that what makes her a better candidate than Obama?
Just wondering……..

vicky   April 17th, 2008 2:53 am ET

The debate was like a democrat to a GOP candidate. Honestly, does anything think those moderators are not in bed with Hillary?
All what happened was an attack on Obama and sinking him to a new low. I like the way Obama doesn't let things destruct him.
Go Obama, us people we are behind your candidacy.

Vince   April 17th, 2008 2:53 am ET

I agree Venus… Obama tried to help her out… she then turns around and tries to throw him under the bus with her attacks. Hillary you are hilarious!

angelina   April 17th, 2008 2:51 am ET

It was a horrilbe debate…for almost 35 minutes they talked and were asked about flag pins, wright, snipper, bosnia, ayers, bitter etc.I feel like it was Hannity of fox were asking those questions…shame on you abc

Sorry folks but thats the idea, to make your opponent look weaker than yourself or not as learned. Hillary is fighting to be the winner nothing wrong with that! Obama's doing the same, if you can't take the heat don't come in the kitchen! It will really get warm about September, but McBush will burn come November!

Hillary 08!

Jon, Los Angeles   April 17th, 2008 2:42 am ET

The debate moderators performed poorly. Charles Gibson and George Stephanoupolus behaved very unprofessionally and asked useless questions for about an hour!
I sense that ABC network is following Faux News tabloidic behavior.

Pam   April 17th, 2008 2:40 am ET

ABC wanted to throw dirt all night but only at one person.

Let's seethe HRC dirt fly:

Caucus states don't matter.
MI and FL don't count till she needs them.
Sniper fire
NAFTA
Judas
Elitist, that is my favorite btw
Columbia Bill
Columbia Mark Penn
5 Million Dollars short
Can't pay her campaign bills, (but can run a country?)

Sinks, toilets, whatever! The very fact that you think the American people are too dumb to see through you makes you unelectable HRC.
You and your husband consistantly say people don't matter, first caucus people, then young people, then two states full of people (of course you changed your mind on that didn't ya, I was here in Iowa when you said it BTW) Little states dont' matter. Then you tie/loose in Texas and of course super delegates don't matter, just electoral college.
I am sick of people not mattering Hillary!!

Satchmo   April 17th, 2008 2:37 am ET

Sen. Barack Obama is a blessing in making. For some of us we have not realized how simple-minded Sen. Hillary is. Yes today was a wake-up for more than just Hillary. That something great is about to happen. Wake up people we about to receive a breakthrough

Susan   April 17th, 2008 2:37 am ET

Hillary is out of touch with her elitist comments..let's do a recap. According to Webster an elitist is part of a superior group. So let's see Obama is an African American male of mixed heritage. His parents divorced when he was two. He had a white mother and an African father, was raised by a single mother and his grandparents in the 1960's. He had some scholarships to go to college but had to work and take out loans. He just finished paying off his loans. His mother died at a young age. Yea..he is an elitist.

Eric-Illinois   April 17th, 2008 2:36 am ET

Wow! did everyone see how uncomfortabel Obama was. This has to be his worst performance in a debate since this whole mess started. Once the presssure is really turned up a notch…this guy begins to fumble. Not the sign we should be looking for. He is just simply too inexperienced and "green" for the job. That oh so snide pout of his will make Kerry's aloofness seem like a rip roaring good time. Face it all you Obamacs…..This guy will wither and putter under the Republican attack machine. He will be standing there stomping his pampered foot going…."But Oprah promised I could be President.! Obama's fan club can't understand why those of us supporting Hillary would consider voting for McCain or Nadar or not voting for Pres. at all? Take a gander at the hate filled comments being thrown at us and Hillary….Take a look at the good ol boy network of party elders wwho have treated Hillary like some diner waitress….here honey here is a quarter now go fetch for us….They sure as hell liked and respected her when she was raiseing money for their campaigns. Say what you will Hillary is in there fighing…and Obama wants t no expects this thing to just be handed to him…Him being the Messiah and all…..Foolish…Once again Democrats put up for President a man who's patiotism is suspect… can't keep his foot out of his mouth and doesn't have clue how to fight bach against the Reppublicans….oh that's right obama doesn't want to fight with the Reps….he just wants to roll over for them….being like is of course the most important thing.

angel   April 17th, 2008 2:36 am ET

Hillary's attacks on Obama shows too much of her wickness and lack of valid moral and self confidence…only foolish people will fall for her dirty tactics….thanks the Creator this country' s folks are very smart to read those who seek power for power itself…….vote OBAMA…..

C.Colistro   April 17th, 2008 2:32 am ET

Obama should not let Hillary get on the ticket with him. She has seriously demonstrated that she is off the rails. I am so disappointed in her behavior She is making it hard for other women candidates because she is confirming some unfortunate stereotypes.

Lutfi   April 17th, 2008 2:31 am ET

You know what Hillary said about the Bosnia incident was that she 'misspoke' but shouldnt it have been a 'lie' ? I think what Barack said about being 'bitter' was a case of 'mis-speaking'. Havent they got it all confused?

chuckd   April 17th, 2008 2:29 am ET

I am seriously thinking that this was a test for Sen Obama. The first 30 or 40 minutes of the debate was all out attack on him. I for one will not be fooled by all the excess garbage out there and I would hope that future debates would hinge on both candidates being able to let the public know how they are going to fix the problems that face all americans face today. I agree with Venus that Sen. Clinton has sorely underestimated Sen Obama and the only way she can get the nod is if she brings him down. It is a sad day when a candiate cannot when on her own merits and not at the expense of her opponent. I believe that Sen Clinton is pressing the attack because if she can damage Obama enough and provide a McCain victory then she can make a run for the White House in 2012. An Obama victory does not provide the same opportunity. Let get this thing over with so we can get on to the general election. I want "CHANGE" , a new face in the game because 30+ years of political office experience brings with it lot's of favors owed to special interest and lobbyists.

Richard Rodriguez Rivera   April 17th, 2008 2:28 am ET

Venus, don't forget that the best way to thwart the negaive attacks and insults, is to respond with kindness and indulgence. This the best weapon to use and it hurts the opponent more, 'cause he is not allowing her to breake his spirit . This is mind bugging her and cannot see the trees for the forest anymore.

matt   April 17th, 2008 2:24 am ET

I thought Hillary was much more confident and Barack was studdering and unsure when asked questions by Charlie and George. Barack claims he's not the polotican and yet he attacted Hillary twice by sayihg she said things unaware that the camera were on. Also he lied when he said he only brought up the sniper fire when asked by reporters. He and his campaing have been all over the issue in the media. I thnk Barack is a big fake and his friendships with anti American leaders scares me silly. I think his true self is comming out more and more and when asked about the bitter comments he tried to change the subject. I do believe that he believes what Reverend Wright preaches is the truth and that is anti-white.

Wade   April 17th, 2008 2:24 am ET

Obama does not use those silly tactics for his campaign. He cannot attack Hillary for the Bosnia story or her tax return or her lies. It is left for the American people to see it for themselves.

Allen In NC   April 17th, 2008 2:22 am ET

The ABC news debate was a farce…. It shouldn't have been called a debate, It should have been called the defending. The two that were doing the interrogation, I mean moderating, Did nothing to help the two canidates get across the real issues to the people/america. They did nothing but instigate the two senators into more political bickering. It was a shame that they didn't ask more questions from both senators on the issues that most concern the people and thier future.

And I must give hillary a tiny bit of credit… She didn't release all the clinton fury on barack. If you noticed he tried his best to speak on the problems surronding us daily. And hillary Me Me Me and more of ME…. Touting her husbands past presidency/Touting NAFTA as if it were her own…. I thought for a few she was stumping for bill… Plesae PA…. Help put hillary out of our misery….

It's a very sad day in America when the media tries to sway voters to vote for a candidate. This debate was a disgrace to American's intelligence. It was so obvious that ABC was on Hillary Clinton's side. The questions were unfair and focused on Obama's small gaffes as opposed to Clintons many recurring gaffes, including lying shamelessly to the American people. It is sickening! Gibson and Stephanapolous are on Clintons' payroll! Is that what they learned in journalism school? SPECIAL INTERESTS GALORE!!!!

Richard Rodriguez Rivera   April 17th, 2008 2:16 am ET

Actually, she just took her mask off and showed the true power hungry lady she is, and her hobby does not help her any, he helps her to dig deeper in the hole she is in and cannot nor will not be able to dig herself out. She is just pushing him in trying to have him say the wrong thing at the wrong time. Like she told him, and he responded back, Shame on you Annie Oakley, go packing your six shooters elsewhere, this not tombstone nor the OK Corral.

Also the moderators of that debate were awful.

Venus- I guess you failed to notice that Obama actually said he did'nt comment on the issue, and he was then corrected and thats when he accepted (Lying Again) and he then decided to move on from the subject, its funny how everytime Obama seem not to please with his response he would quickly try to change his policy and not only that he is always saying that he has to look into that??? If you are ready to bring change at least have a plan to start with.

he uses the frase Hope and change but never really specifies exactly what his plans are, this strategy seems to be working for him because people hear these words and they project the hopes onto him. but soon we will all see the Emperor has NO Clothes, and he is nothing more that the Typical politian that he claims not to be.

Hillary or Mc Cain

Yusef   April 17th, 2008 2:13 am ET

Personally I though this debate was the worst debate of All 21 debates. They did not talk about any important issues for the first 45min. Hillary clinton is just so unbelieveable in the way she attacks barak obama. I respect him by showing restrain in there argument when he could ripped her apart on the bosnia issue. I believe she is trying mest him up as much as possible so he can lose the general election so she can run again in 4years. I honestly believe thats her strategy.

mark from PA   April 17th, 2008 2:12 am ET

this debate was a plot to take obama down. i was watching closely that the modertator ask obama more questions that clinton. when obama is answering them, that silly keeps forcing the guy to answer the question. tonight, shame on reporters. if clinton wins pennsylvania, it because those reporters on abc have been paid. therefore we, americans wiil clung to our guns and religions.

James   April 17th, 2008 2:11 am ET

Did you guys miss the entire point - that the debate was complete tabloid crap?

John Adkisson   April 17th, 2008 2:11 am ET

Just finished watching this "debate" on the delayed West Coast, and I'm reeling with shock at the performance of the moderators.

I counted five rounds of questions focusing on Clinton's talking points on so-called Obama "issues" : (1) the flag pin; (2) Rev. Wright; (3) some has-been weather underground guy in Obama's neighborhood; (4) the "bitter" gaffe; and (5) [of course addressed to the African-American] affirmative action.

These completely screwy distractions literally took up half the debate. The moderators let Hillary spend her time trashing Obama on these fake issueswhich were raised initially by these so-called journalists while Obama was required to explain himself over and over while objecting to the fact that the questions were distractions.

Of course, Clinton being Clinton, attacked and attacked, and Obama pointedly remained respectful at one point even saying "Senator Clinton is entitled to make an error or two" (referring to her Bosnia hallucination).

It is hard to know who got the advantage out of this circus. But ABC got a big black eye.

This debate was won by Hillary. At last the media are asking probing questions of Obama and he was totally lacking.Media for too long allowed Obama the benefit of doubt and atlast it has ended. As the democratic frontrunner he needs to answer the questions posed to him.The people will ultimately decide who the democratic nominee is based on thier perceptions aided by an unfair but inquisitive media. If Obama supporters feel that asking such questions is hitting below the belt then they are reacting unfairly. They also must objectively give thier candidate a second look over.

Sanator Clinton, prior to this debate, when asked about Senator Obama, been electable she portrayed him as not electable. Tonight , at the same question, as opposed to Peter, she said three times, yes, yes, yes, to Obama, been electable. Wow, what a turn of events!!

What so great about Hillary ? I cannot get it. If she is finding fault with every word of her opponent then she is not a good candidate. It look like she does not have time to discuss real issues of the people. I am from a small town. If I loose amy job I feel bitter instead of happiness. That is reality. She does not get it. I hope people will understand how scruplously she wants to win the nomination. I think people are more intelligent than her.

The first 46 minutes were littered with questions that would insult a six year old. Flag pins were disscussed because the internet is buzzing about them? Give me a break? Are you more patriotic than someone else? The Weatherman?? I hear the second half was better but, I lost my concentration before that point. ABC owes an apology to the viewers.

Georgie wormed his way into the comments by interrupting Obama too many times. Clearly he leans to Hillary-he let her talk too much. I didn't appreciate Charlie's He said/She said questions. Enough already! I wanted to hear the gears of the brains click, unfortunately, not enough time was alloted towards issues. I thought the commentators lost the debate in the first segment. When the public says "we don't want to see them beat on each other", can't the commentator take control and avoid those devisive 'clear-it-up' questions? Maybe those guys like to keep the public dizzy stirring the pot.

Obama is losing serious credibility with his political antics, mainly *because* he walked into this whole thing claiming a "new kind of politics," holier than thou righteousness oozing everywhere he went. Now, he is mudslinging himself, which undermines his own credibility, wouldn't you say? I didn't have much of a problem with him before, but my concerns are just increasing with where he's going now… He's also going back on his financial plans, allegedly agreeing with McCain earlier on that public financing would be his only funding source. Now, that seems to have changed. Talk about throwing in the kitchen sink. Obama isn't ready for this–he needs a few more years, and some accomplishments greater than good rhetoric… but oh wait, his self-contradictions even go back on his allegedly good rhetoric. What's with this guy?

Marty   April 17th, 2008 1:56 am ET

Though it is tiresome and unattractive when either candidate attacks the other If either Candidate can't withstand these volleys they will be in big trouble when the Republicans get into attack mode. This is a rather important test for both candidates. Both Hillary and Barack have said they will rally behind the other should the other be the candidate. The Republican attacks will be far worse and its far better to face the issues now that will come up later.

Noel   April 17th, 2008 1:54 am ET

Yeah
It really does appear like shes losing her mind?
Being a president requires a lot of things, and I believe the most important of those things is character, and Hillary will lose that battle every single time.

Cant blame the girl for thinking long term though.
Hey, even if she loses this time around, which she will, if she damages Obama beyond repair, which im pretty sure shes completely intent on doing, then shes roll out a red carpet for McCain to steal this presidency, when a couple of months ago he had absolutely no chance, and then she can blame Obama in 4 years for not securing the white house and position herself as the royal incumbent like she did this year, simply because shes entitled dammit!!

We will reject her arrogance yet again though.

Dear Supporters and undecided ,
I saw when she was asked if Barack can win she rambled on. Then she said yes yes yes .
He can win . BUT … Here the BUT she keep trying to go back to his remarks .
About ( Bitter ) and Pastor Weight . He handle himself very well .
She seems on one hand say yes he can win . And other no he can't because of this this that this that .
Well this well that . You guys now how she is .
I wish he would out right said she is a lier .
But then again . He not like that . He is a man of faith.

He don't like to put none down . He a trusting man and true man . He can win .
Even Hillary said it tonight . YES YES YES …
He can win . And she will help him win .

So well lets see how fast she takes the attack add down. Also it was said tonight that 6 out of 10 P. A and across the country don't trust her .
Is it no wonder . She try to have it both ways .

On one hand she said yes yes yes , He can win . and other hand she still trying to beat him with real misstakes he said he made .
And it wont be the last time .

If you want a real and trusting man for presdint . Think about what your going to get if you vote for Hillary over Barack .

Hillary Whiskey drinking snipperfire duck hunting lie . Now she said her grandfather worked in a mill at 11 years old . Give me a break .

Or a man of real faith , Trusting , A true man .
A Man whom will always tell you what you need to hear . Not whats political correct answer . A man whom can heal this country and as well others . That no longer believe in us because of Bush .

I'll take Barack Obama .

I thought the ABC "debate" would have been much better if the first 45 or so minutes weren't devoted to "junk" and almost devoid of any issues.
The character game is way old—and I think we've all pretty much made up our minds on whom we trust…The ISSUES are what we should hear about.
Not good ABC!

This debate was a hit job on Obama by George and Charlie. George used to work for the Clintons so no surprise. But why watch ABC news anymore if they are going to be so lopsided? I won't

Brett   April 17th, 2008 1:49 am ET

Some of us are fooled some of the time; all of the people some of the time; but not all of the people all of the time. It was Barrack's campaign that relentless attacked Hillary about Bosnia. And then he says during the debate "I " never commented about it. He is a snake oil salesman. And, like McCain, certainly doesn't understand economics. Are you sure he's not a Republican? He certainly uses their attack techniques, and lies, with the utmost finesse.

RM   April 17th, 2008 1:46 am ET

As a republican I can honestly say this debate was bias. Senator Obama did well. He showed character. Honestly do we want this for our Country? Do we really want people attacking a presidential candidate who is actually not engaing in the same old poltics. Why not support change? Why entertain tabloid politics?
Obama has convinced us that he is real. He is direct about his attitude and has not engaged in foolish arguements. If someone agrees with tonite's ridiculous debate, cleary they don't want America to move out of the gutter.

Spider   April 17th, 2008 1:43 am ET

Of course Hillary is attacking, aggressively mind you. She is campaigning for the POTUS. She, as all Democrats should, wants the most qualified and electable candidate for the General Election. If any of you believe that the Republicans will not bring up the "bitter" statement, Reverend Wright, Chicago mobster Rezko and Obama's freshman Senator lack of experience and anything else they can find, you are so very sadly mistaken.
All of the dirt that can possibly be brought up has already been brought up about the Clintons. Millions spent by the Republicans to find something when Bill was President. The only thing that money bought was an incident with a cigar in the oval office. She has been vetted. Barack has not. If she cannot win the nomination with this attack, maybe she can toughen him up a little for the General.

Tamika   April 17th, 2008 1:42 am ET

The debate was a travesty. Nomatter-Obama emerged victorious. It was a hit job on Obama. A continuous attack. Exactly 1 hour and 3 minutes into the debate a question about the economy (the number one issue in America) was asked. Less than Five minutes left in the debate they give One minute to the gas prices which are over 4 dollars in CA and other places and steadily rising. They spend One hour on BULL@*)%&. One hour on whether or not he wears a flag on his lapel pin. She didn't have one. So what? And no time on the issues. The only time the issues were brought up (Gas, Housing, Healthcare, Education) was when Obama re-directed the talk back to the issues. And why was it that the only time the so-called 'moderators' quieted the audience was when they were clapping for Obama? Where were the questions about Hillary's and Bill's $800,000.00 connection to the Colombian Trade people? Where was the question about Mark Penn and his closed door deal with the Colombian Trade people? Mark, who is still working for her? What a shameless, shameless so-called debate. No-matter-Barack was gracious and glorious and issue-oriented, for the people, as usual.

Teresa W. of Newport Bch, CA   April 17th, 2008 1:40 am ET

Hillary has rehearse this speech ahead of time. She was too comfortable with her answer. ABC news team was not fair with any of the questions given to Barack Obama. Most of the questions were attacks on Obama's creditability not to mention that Hillary had attack him from the flip side.

Hillary has proven that she will tear apart the Democratic party to stop Barack Obama from being nominated at all cost to the DNC. ABC news and Hillary Clinton handed the presidential nomination to Barack Obama on a silver platter. The 72% of the viewers say the Clintons campaign is disspecable and it has been manage very poorly. Not to mention the comment that Bill Clinton made about the elderly being smart about voting for Hillary. Dumb move Bill. You just pissed off the contributors/major voters for Hillary's campaign.

DNC please end this sherade after the Pennsylvania primary. You have a strong/worthy opponent Barack Obama he has proven himself time after time. At least he tries to show transperancy, honesty, unity for the people of the nation. Hllary hasn't shown any remorse for her misspoken, misdeeds, or insults to the american people intelligence.

CNN please post my comment

C. J.   April 17th, 2008 1:40 am ET

First 45 min. of debate , Is sucked a good word? Hope Charlie and George aren't patting each other on the back to much. The flag pin question had to be the highlight. The questions must have come from one of those magazines found at the check out counters in stores. After that it did improve. Senator Obama will pick a good running mate , when the time comes.

Mike   April 17th, 2008 1:39 am ET

That was not a debate, it was a waste of time. ABC has disgraced themselves with this fiasco. Too much time wasted on crap I don't care about when I'm paying $50 to fill up my 12 gallon gas tank.

A well informed press is essential for a free America. Tonight we watched as journalists (probably shouldn't use that term) betrayed their country. George and Gibson should slink away into a dark corner somewhere and not come out again.

No to Obama   April 17th, 2008 1:38 am ET

Venus, regarding your candidate being attacked by Hillary after he supposedly "tried to help" her (your words). You've got to be joking. The only thing he's trying to help her with is looking as bad as possible. That's politics and he plays the game well. Too bad he isn't as good on actual issues. Then you say things like "Obama - just keep your foot on her neck! She is not worth saving." It's interesting to see what aggressive tendencies Obama inspires in people. So much for a new politics.

You'll note that Hillary comes off as a team player, if she doesn't win the nomination, she will do all she can to get a Democrat elected. Don't see that quality in Obama.

Faye   April 17th, 2008 1:38 am ET

What wrong with you guys, Obama will have to face this in the national election if he cant take it now, how will he take it in the national election. I am a Democrat but will vote for John Mc Cain if Obama wins the nomination. He will not beat John Mc Cain. I want to win the general election I guess you guys dont. Hillary can beat John Mc Cain, Obama cant

Obama said it right when he said that the next president will be dealing with the biggest problems that any president has in 40 years. The person to handle those problems is Hillary Clinton. She has the best plans to deal with the economy, the military, and keep the Republicans in line.

dre   April 17th, 2008 1:31 am ET

I am a former Obama supporter, now supporting Hillary Clinton. I believe that a lot of what is said on these blogs, are unrelated to what actually took place in the debate, and just in general, most of what is written about anything anti-Clinton appears to be written by people who have paid no attention to what she has said or done and has pre-written their comments. Not all. People are allowed to have differing opinions. I believe that both candidates conducted themselves with civility when it comes to politics, and Barack Obama came under fire for many of his comments and actions. As did Hillary. But by far, Hillary was the most pointed, well poised candidate tonight. She stayed on her issues, and had a presidential air that Obama lacked when under his most intensive questioning yet. Hillary Clinton won this debate by far because she focused on her issues and policies. And she has my vote, a vote Obama has lost. I supported Obama when I believed that he was all for a new brand of politics, but it has become clear to me that this new type of politics only works when he is clear of political danger. Whenever Hillary gets a foot in he does exactly what he criticizes her of; his campaign becomes highly negative and highly "old-school" in terms of politics.

madhur   April 17th, 2008 1:30 am ET

this debate was rubish. the abc host was terrible. these people are thinking about themselves. there was not any serious issues about we american people. hussain cannot be president, in my opinion. he is a left wing liberal supported by all rich people who will dominate us after he elected.

jayjayaye   April 17th, 2008 1:28 am ET

If Clinton can admit to — how shall I put it? — "stretching the truth" about her visit to Bosnia and ask to be forgiven for doing so, how is it that she can keep on harping on Obama's "elitist" comment, which he himself admits was poorly stated and for which he has expressed his regrets?

Brad IL.   April 17th, 2008 1:27 am ET

Hillary didn't attack him, she is just telling the truth. He has no political know how to be the President of this country. He is a joke for a Senator , and I know cause I live in this state. He won his Senate seat by getting the other candidates disqualified so he could have a easy win. He is just like the rest of the political machine in Chicago, CROOKED. I wouldn't vote for the scum if he were the only one running. He hasn't written one bill that has become law, he just adds his name to someone else's bill. Do we really want someone in this office that can't even write a law . His alma-mater should be proud. He should ask for his money back on the education that he has recieved. People should really wake up and realize that this is not what this country needs at this time. I did and will vote for John McCain if Hillary is not the candidate, someone with the right knowledge of this office has got to be the President.

Rashida   April 17th, 2008 1:26 am ET

I don't understand why people can't see through Hillary's feeble attacks on Obama! Obama responds without ever trying to attack Sen. Clinton and she has many weak points he could hammer on. Obama shows great chracter when he doesn't stoop to low points as Sen. Clinton has, since she is losing. As Obama said squabbling over misconstrued/misspoken statements and people's religious leaders (people who are not the candidates) it will not help the poor people who are struggling to afford to buy food and stay in their home.

Electress   April 17th, 2008 1:26 am ET

Hillary did very well, she did not attack Obama, she answered questions! She even admitted once again that "Bosnia didn't jive"
and she was sorry!

Obama should not have referred to people with disabilities as
"MENTALLY DERANGED". I would have thought that since he has
years of experience in poor neighborhoods that he would have
been more sensitive, instead he magnified the disability.

Hillary has been fighting for soldiers and their families returning
from Iraq. We will have thousands of soldiers who are people
with mental disabilities, and not mentally deranged.
Hillaryy will fight to cut through barries, stigmas, and labels.

That is just another reason I support Hillary!

Mark   April 17th, 2008 1:25 am ET

Here is a statement from Hillary- "On a couple of occasions in the last weeks, um, I just said some things that weren't in keeping with what I knew to be the case…"

If that isn't an all out admission of lying to us, then I don't know what is. No wonder nearly 60% of voters don't think she is trustworthy.

Let's see a show of hands for how many people want to vote for a president who lies to them…

Mary   April 17th, 2008 1:24 am ET

After watching this debate my mind is completely made up that Hilary is NOT the person i would want as my president. She'll stop at noting to win even if it means attacking the very party she stands for. If she gets in the White House, i dare citizen to disagree with her or she'll attack them too! Obama handled himself diligently, professionally and presidential and he of all people deserve to be the next president. As of today, it's Obama for me!

jayjayaye   April 17th, 2008 1:24 am ET

If Clinton can admit to — how shall I put it? — stretching the truth about her visit to Bosnia and ask to be forgiven for doing so, how is it that she can keep harping on Obama's "elitist" comment, which he himself admits was poorly stated and for which he has expressed his regrets? To err is human; to forgive, divine. Both candidates have demonstrated that they are human (did anyone ever think otherwise?), but it seems to me that Clinton falls a bit short on the "d" word.

Crystal, California   April 17th, 2008 1:23 am ET

The ABC debate was a complete waste of time. Gibson and Stephonopolous(sp) should be ashamed at how they handled this debate.

Jeff   April 17th, 2008 1:21 am ET

Hillary Clinton asked for forgiveness for lying - althought she did not use the word directly. Obama deferred on the issue. When asked about Obama's misquote, Hillary pounced on him mercilessly.

When someone asks the American Public for forgiveness and yet cannot forgive her opponent for a similar, albeit lesser accusation, that says it all for me.

Hillary has to go before she forever destroys the party.

BNS   April 17th, 2008 1:20 am ET

Hillary Clinton is doing her duty as an American and as a Democrat to create the conditions under which the other candidate is scrutinized.

She is doing us a service.

This may not mean that she gets the nomination, but at least it means that we know the person we are putting out there to represent the party.

People who see her behavior only as an attack fail to understand the bigger picture.

Obama may seem to be a nice guy, but we cannot afford to put him out there without testing his mettle.

LT for Obama   April 17th, 2008 1:18 am ET

I agree that Obama, even in this debate, attempted to bring the discussion back to issues.

What I also found funny is that many times, Hillary did not actually answer the question possed but instead went off into her stance of policies that had NOTHING to do with the question.

By the way, where is her 2007 return? She asked for Obama's yet all we have of her 2007 return is a summary. How do you have the audacity to ask form something that you have not provided.

Lastly, I know what I heard but did anyone else hear her say that she knowingly lied about Bosnia and other things she got caught lying about? She worded it very cleverly, however, it was clear that she admitted to lying. Do I want her to continue to lie to me and then after she gets in office say "Oops, I liked, I am sorry?"

Time to end the "Silly Season" Hillary and start backing the true winner of this campaign.

Clinton's "Yes, yes, yes" response to whether Obama could beat McCain just set the stage for her next set of lies to the superdelegates (and apparently, she is taking back what she told Gov. Bill Richardson). Unfortunately, there may not be any you tube footage to document her covert double-talk for the voters.

johnny   April 17th, 2008 1:17 am ET

I am not a democrat. I will probably not vote for either Hillary or Obama. I find it amazing, however, the way people who back Obama can rationalize every action that he makes. He never apologizes, he just claims that his words were misunderstood or that it was not what he meant to say or do. And his supporters swallow all of it and feed it to others as well. Even in tonight's debate, he brought up a statement that was made by Hillary in 1992 that had proven to be politically harmful to her. That is simply attacking her in the same fashion that he accuses Hillary of attacking him. And he does so in a backhanded manner that attempted to make it seem as if it was not simply a slur against her. This is only the latest instance of Obama's campaign wagging a finger a Clinton with it's left hand for a discretion or misdeed that the right hand is currently engaging in.

Chris In California   April 17th, 2008 1:15 am ET

Wow! Hillary Clinton did a superb job in the debate. It was maybe the best debate thus far. Nice job ABC! It was fair and unbiased and equal, unlike the prior debates which seemed so biased against Senator Clinton.

I think Hillary Clinton demonstrated her knowledge and her strong grasp of the issues facing us right now. I think her plans for addressing the issues are solid and make sense.

Great debate! I liked seeing both candidates being civil to each other and I thought the moderators did a great job.

Jack, that was the worst debate ever, I had to ask my daughter in-law what channel was abc and now I know why i don't watch them. Charlie and George is just the Clinton pons, and Obama was great!!!, that why he will win the nomination because he can take whatever is thrown are him and still maintain his intergity and that why he is running for the president of the United States of America. Jim   April 17th, 2008 1:13 am ET

I thought Hillary definitely understands the economy better and Obama got tripped up about his tax plan that just won't work. She was also firm about pulling out of Iraq and her plans to help all people rise up saying, "an affirmative action that includes all Americans". I really think she has the best chances of winning against McCain in the Fall.

Venus - let's have an intellegent conversation on these blogs

Burt - I appreciate your comment, but we are all Democrats and I have no doubt that the Clinton's or the Obama's will work hard to unify the party. Like a friend told me once, "We are all playing for the same team, we are just arguing over the MVP right now" Let's remember that we can all have different views and that vetting the candidate now is better than picking someone that falls apart during the general election.

Peace! Go Hillary! :)

I just have to laugh at the comments about Hilary attacking Obama and the reverse. There is so little to none of the discussion of the issues. Stop telling me about how incensed you are about the media talking points and talk about what each can offer in leadership. If you do you'll see that each of them offer us what the last 7-1/2 yrs have been lacking. Republicans have had their chance over this period of time and have made no contibution to the common good of this Country. We must be very careful to not allow that to continue.

The Democratic Senate and Congress are misleading the American People. There is no valid economic reason to reject the free trade agreement with Columbia. Colombia's exports already enter the U.S. market duty-free under the 1991 Andean Trade Preference Act. But most U.S. exports to Colombia face big tariffs; 35 percent on autos, 15 percent on tractors and 10 percent on computers. The agreement would reduce these to zero; therefore it has no impact on imports, but will significantly help our exports. Why are the Democrats opposing it? Just to be popular and look to oppose free trade? It certainly doesn’t have any economic reason.

It's disappointing that Hillary and Barrack both oppose it. It's time for congress, senate and the white house to do the hard but RIGHT things, not just tell us what they think we would like to hear. It's time for JOHN MCCAIN.

It surely it isn't ok to be sexist or racist; so why do some people have no problem being ageist? Heres a radical idea: Lets elect the person based on their integrity, honesty, commitment to America and their POLICY.

I'm glad they didn't make a commitment. The idea of Hillary as VP is as distasteful of her as Pres.

The Clinton trademark lack of integrity has caused a huge chasm to develop between them and many former supporters. People don't trust or respect her in the numbers that they did. And, with good reason!

Obama will have trustworthy and experienced men and women to select from. I'm sure he can pick a good partner to help him handle the heaviest responsibility in the nation.

Mike   April 17th, 2008 1:05 am ET

I hope you see now Obamabots how it feels when the media is biased. Plus Obama should have to answer questions that address character.

AZCacti4Hillary   April 17th, 2008 1:05 am ET

Despite Clinton's strong answers to the questions, the majority of the quotes in this article are Obama's. I found Clinton's statements regarding why she would stick to her plan to withdraw troops from Iraq especially well thought out- the best showing of global understanding I've seen so far. I wish the media would focus less on whether a remark or criticism will "stick" to a candidate and more the soundness of their plans for our country in the next four years.

greenfun   April 17th, 2008 1:04 am ET

Clinton was CLEARLY more Presidential. Her command of specifics was obviously superior. What stands out in my mind is that it was the first fair debate and CNN cannot stand that their preferred candidate could not and does not measure up in a fair debate. The CNN pundits are full of crap as they have been all along. Clinton is better qualified, prepared and experienced–GET OVER IT-SHE IS A WOMAN AND SHE IS THE WINNER OF THIS DEBATE.

Hillary Clinton continues to impress me. God that woman has an incredible grasp of what needs to be done once Bush is finally gone. She knows her stuff; and she exudes nothing but confidence. I can't imagine why Democrats all over the country wouldn't get behind her so she can be our next President.

Obama is running on this "appeal and charisma" thing. If he were a short little bald guy, he'd never have polled higher than fifth place and would have dropped out long ago.

Bushwhacked   April 17th, 2008 1:00 am ET

First of all, I wish the moderators hadn't brought up the sniper lies and the Wright issue and had concentrated on the more serious issues, as they did for the last hour. Hillary could not let it go — could not back down on her attacks even while saying she thought these things were unimportant [not in so many words, but in spirit, I felt]. I am so sick of all this attacking, and it's no secret who is doing the majority of it.

The sad thing is that I think Hillary could be a good president and that she has destroyed herself with her own campaign tactics. I was a supporter until she actually began campaigning — and she lost me.

And why should either of them commit to the other for VP? I'm not so sure that 'dream team' is really so dreamy, when you get right down to it.

Great Debate!!! Even a well greased machine grinds to a halt when it has had need of an overhaul from the beginning.
Let's give the American people great confidence and sincere pride. They know when to call it quits. That rio roaring machine apparently has grinded to a halt.
The defining volley of questions on electability was the straw that broke the camel's back. Hillary was actually caught off guard and pinned. She never saw it coming. By her own admission, she has conceded to letting the Obama campaign go forward.
Through it all, Senator Barak Obama has given his female opponent
all the respect and courtesy do her and the American people not to drag her in an ungodly barage of negativity. She was highly esteemed for her position as First Lady of a former dynasty. Obama did his utmost not to damage the American foundation.
Now we must band together and allow Obama the opportunity to go forward as the next president for these "troubled years" in American history. He may just be a sitting duck as was attributed to President Carter. He never had the priviledge to lead; just pray for the people.
OBAMA in 2008!

I am so proud of Hillary she is so honest and precise. She knows her stuff!!

Hillary won the debate and Obama was arrogant.

I just had a chance to see Michele Obama's Speech at Villanova University. She was just BRILLANT. If any of you didn" see the entire speech, I STRONGLY encourage you to do so. It will answer a lot of your questions about her and Barack.

To bad, Bill Clinton couldn't do a better job for his WIFE. If Bill had just done for Hillary what she did for him when he ran for President, Hillary would be better off.

However, as a male, I was extremely moved by Michele Obama. I haven't had a chance to hear her before. I can't imagine women not being able to relate to Michele Obama after hearing this candid speech!

I am most proud, that the American people are not being sidetracked,
by the negative campain of Hillary Clinton.
When is she going to wake up and realize that its not working?

THE DEBATE HAD ONE LOSER (HILLARY) AND ONE WINNER (MCcCAIN!!!)

Hillary torpedoed her only chance to convince Superdelegates to
reverse popular vote and nominate her, justifying this by her arguments THAT OBAMA is NOT ELECTIBLE due to his alleged lack of experience, the Preacher and elitism. But by admitting emphatically that he can win in front of McCAIN (obviously stating that she is more so, which OBAMA also obviously contradicted), and even if she try to tell the superdelegates that what she said was only OUT OF politeness, very few of the still not committed super's will dream to take the risk to alienate voters with the electibility
justification, after her public statement to the contrary !!

And McCAIN will frolic beacuse of the irrational statement of Hillary that she will follow her IRAQ timetable no matter what happen on the ground, OBAMA did slightly better by saying with less clarity that he will do so in 16 month basing on a plan imposed by the Presidency to the generals, with certain restrictions (but forgetting to SAY what would happen if the generals are not able to comply with the plan !!)

A similar irrational attitude regarding "no new taxes" for incomes
under $ 250,000, no matter the financial situation, by both candidates
will leave them open to GOP attacks, so that the DEMS will lose
their advantage attacking the GOP on this issue.

SO THIS DEBATE WILL NOT IMPROVE, BUT PROBABLY WORSEN
HILLARY'S CATASTROPHIC PUBLIC PERCEPTION AS SHOWN BY THE WASHINGTON POST / ABC POLL, NOT IMPROVE HER SITUATION IN THE UPCOMING PRIMARIES AND MOST IMPORTANT,
HER POSSIBILITIES TO ATTRACT SUPERDELEGATES HAVE NEARLY VANISHED.

WHAT WILL SHE DO NOW ??

Done with HILLARY CLINTON   April 17th, 2008 12:53 am ET

This had to the lamest excuse for a debate I have ever seen! The questions for the first hour were ridiculous. I wanted to hear about the issues and when Hillary had the nerve to question Barack Obama's character it was too much for me. She's ducking sniper fire (3 times she said this for the past months), settling the crisis in Ireland, making over $109 million…etc. And he's out of touch ! He's the elitist !Go figure !

PA please wake up like IN did and push this woman out!!!

OBAMA 08!!! YES WE CAN!!!

truth   April 17th, 2008 12:52 am ET

ABC should be ashame for their hit job on Obama!!

SK   April 17th, 2008 12:52 am ET

I am an independent who is watching the democratic candidates very carefully.

Do you take us (American public) to be so stupid that we can not understand what Obama said. We are concern about NAFT and Columbian deal which is having direct impact on our manufacturing industry and Clinton's have lot to do with it.

I don't like the Clinton's lying to us and making every small thing a political issue and spin it in a negative way.

If you and other in this campaign will adamant to spread negative news it is hurting your campaign. Have you seen the recent poll Hillary. Your negative number are keep going up. Help yourself by staying on the issues and saying positive things and get out of this spin mood if you really want her to win.

This debate was a "Fairly Tale", why didn't they ask Clinton about her lies on NAFTA ? Why didn't they talk about Mark Penn and the Columbian issue ? The moderators have consistently pressed Obama and been kind with Clinton, why ? Because she's a woman ?
We all know all the controversies about Mark Penn and Columbia, the lies about NAFTA and the girl in Ohio, why they didn't talk about that ?
This debate was unfair Obama, but he'll still be fine on tuesday.

j gannon   April 17th, 2008 12:50 am ET

Worst "debate" I have ever seen. What a waste of what could have been a very informative two hours.

NYC   April 17th, 2008 12:48 am ET

Hillary won the debate by a landslide! She's such an inspiring woman! Smart, ambitious, and tough as nails! keep it up and win Pennsylvania!
