Bruce Springsteen put his weight behind Obama Wednesday.

(CNN) — Rocker Bruce Springsteen has endorsed Barack Obama for president.

“At the moment, critics have tried to diminish Senator Obama through the exaggeration of certain of his comments and relationships,” said the New Jersey native, in a statement posted on his Web site Wednesday. “While these matters are worthy of some discussion, they have been ripped out of the context and fabric of the man's life and vision… Over here on E Street, we're proud to support Obama for President.”

In February, Springsteen had resisted making a choice between Obama and Hillary Clinton, telling USA Today that "there are two really good Democratic candidates for president. I admire and respect them both enough to wait and see what happens."

But he praised Obama, who cited Springsteen as the person he would most like to meet in an interview with People magazine.

"I always look at my work as trying to measure the distance between American promise and American reality," he told the paper. "And I think (Obama's) inspired a lot of people with that idea: How do you make that distance shorter? …”

Springsteen backed Sen. John Kerry's unsuccessful 2004 presidential bid.

How dare he…isn't this the same Bruce Springsteen who fired his union roadies and brought in scabs when he didn't want to pay union scale. He is not the working man's friend and neither is Obama. Conservatives like Obama because they know they can beat him in the general election. We know nothing about Obama, we may not all be in love with Hillary, but look what happened the last time we elected someone because we liked them on a personal level. Have we learned nothing from the current Resident? He was so down home and even though from Conn. souded so southern and normal. We ignored the mess he made as Texas gov. We ignored he is the only person ever to go bankrupt in the oil business. Wake up people!!!

Darth Vadik, CA   April 16th, 2008 11:27 am ET

God bless the Boss, he is what a real American should be like.

John from PA   April 16th, 2008 11:27 am ET

I won't buy your albums ever again Bruce…
"Barry" Obama is all foam no beer.
I'm also disappointed that Colbert gave his proud wife a free ride on his show.
All who support BHO are nuts and should all move to Berkeley, put on a fairy costume and dance in the streets chanting "yes we can" while high on weed.

Golden Chica   April 16th, 2008 11:27 am ET

It doesn't matter how many people endorse Obama. The people of Pennsylvania are too smart to be swayed by endorsements. They know the best candidate is Hillary Clinton and they will prove it to all these elitist on April 22nd. Go Hillary.

Marine   April 16th, 2008 11:27 am ET

Too many years of "Mary Jane" and acid.

Phil From VA   April 16th, 2008 11:26 am ET

Better than Elton who is not even a citizen.
For all of you haters who say he is an elitist. Let me see, the other two candiates – Made $109 Million in the last 7 years. McCains's wife is worth $100 Million and Obama made a few millions from his book last year. hmmmm Get real.

for Hillary   April 16th, 2008 11:26 am ET

Gotta love the boos.

He's one of the most extraordinary Americans. Always stood on the right side of important political issues.

Sylvester   April 16th, 2008 11:23 am ET

Hilary and McCain voted for a war that continues to kill innocent people FOR NO REASON even up to this very day! The death toll of soldiers in comparison to 911 victims is FAR GREATER! Yet Obama shouldn't be president? Hilary and McCain voted for a war that is destroying the US economy. Yet Obama shouldn't be president? When will America be logical when choosing presidents instead of illogical?

Midge from Ohio   April 16th, 2008 11:23 am ET

Anyone know where I can get a bumper sticker that says "Don't blame me, I didn't vote for Obama"? I am going to need it….

john williams san diego, ca.   April 16th, 2008 11:21 am ET

Am i to believe this endorsement is done by a real intellectual person?

Lutisha BeeBranch Ark   April 16th, 2008 11:21 am ET

Why are people so upset when Sir Elton had a fund raiser for Hillary that was reported, but when Bruce endorses Obama there is outrage people get real this is only the tip of a very high iceberg of who is and will endorse our next President of the United States Barack Obama!!!!!

Its been a long time coming but I know a change is gonna come.

Jeff   April 16th, 2008 11:21 am ET

What a shock. He backed John Kerry too.

Bruce Springsteen endorsement is irrelevant.
Limousine rock stars are a dime a dozen.
His fan base will never support Obama.

Last concert I attended in Giant Stadium I was so bored I left my front row seats.

BRAIN, KY   April 16th, 2008 11:19 am ET

Obama 08! Hillary is the one who is Elitist hinding behind Bill with $109+millions. She is just chewing her words. Go Barack, you are educated enought to lead us there!

In politics, people either don't reallly like you, or they hate you. When Obama is as old as Hillary, he'll have just as many scars and just as many ppl who dislike him for stupid reasons.

Second-best campaign blunder ever: Ronald Reagan appropriates "Born in the U.S.A." for his reelection campaign, apparently unaware that it slammed his administration's treatment of Vietnam vets.

Clinton LIES. Hillary lies and Bill lies about the lies. Anyone who has that 'loose' of an affiliation with the truth simply can't be trusted in any aspect or reality.

No doubt Clinton will dismiss Springsteen's support for Obama in much the same way she dismissed the vote I cast in one of the smaller caucus states.
She is the personification of elitism and lost my vote for good a long time ago.

The only difference in half of America voting for Kerry is we didn't have a choice who we voted for. Now we do. I for one am glad all Americans have a choice who they vote for in November (except for Michigan and Florida). You people calling for the primary to be over are weak bellied. Get over it, make the choice you want to make now. Then in November, make the right choice VOTE DEMOCRAT!

Englishman Sir Elton John

or Mr. American Rock Star Endorsement himself: BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN.

nice . . .

Yet another endorsement for Obama.

…unfortunatly, this one means little to nothing as Springstein is not a "super delegate".

NickNas   April 16th, 2008 10:37 am ET

Hey Hillary supporters!!

Hint: Being so negative and slamming EVERYONE who doesn't agree with your candidate makes you look JUST LIKE CLINTON!

Walt, Belton,TX   April 16th, 2008 10:33 am ET

Wow! That should make all the difference in the world, unless you can think for yourself and interpret what Obama has said and what he meant for yourself. Perhaps Springstein could also interpret what Obama's wife meant with her elitist, racist comments, too. Oh thank you, thank you wonderful one!

Former Clinton Voter   April 16th, 2008 10:27 am ET

I agree with Bruce, Obama is the right person to save this country.
I know there are still people who support Hillary, but I ask them to join me as I have done now and let's unite behind Obama. There greater good is to change the direction of this country.

Edward Nelson, Mount Vernon, NY   April 16th, 2008 10:27 am ET

This is confirmation that Bruce and I are of the same mind. This election reminds me of my favorite Bruce Springstein song, "One Step Up, Two Steps Back': "Woke up this mornin' my house was cold, checked the furnace it wasn't burnin'. Went outside jumped in my old Ford, hit the engine but she ain't turnin'. Givin' each other some hard lessons lately . . . we ain't learnin'." Like the furnace, Hillary Clinton is surrounded by superdelegates who have lost the burning love they once had for her. More importantly, she's tried to excite the superdelegates, like the Ford, but nothing is happening. By implication it's a hard lesson, but Hillary Clinton just isn't learning.

Michelle in Davenport,FL   April 16th, 2008 10:12 am ET

Wonderful that he knows the hearts of the American people. However, he should learn to talk to Hillary. She is very smart and know how to deal. McCain understands war. That is the real issue.

Ilona Proud Canadian   April 16th, 2008 10:12 am ET

Thank you Bruce Springsteen!!

What a great endorsement. Sen. Clinton's mud slinging and dishonest strategy is NOT WORKING!

Way to go Sen. Obama!

obamican   April 16th, 2008 10:12 am ET

All right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! go springsteen

AJ   April 16th, 2008 10:11 am ET

I am a big fan of the Boss. And actually I am disappointed very much in his support of him. Very much disappointed.

But what I am disgusted with is CNN's continued attempt to have every single news it reports to be around Obama. It is as though Hillary (or McCain) do not even exist.

Roger   April 16th, 2008 10:11 am ET

The Boss is a "used to be" just like Obama.

Brad G.   April 16th, 2008 10:10 am ET

I'm from Pa. George Bush has for the last 8 years insulted Pa. as well as 49 other states and DC. The person best suited to bring pride back to our country and worlwide respect back for America is Barrack. Thanks Bruce for the support. Thanks for a great tour too. Caught the show in Detroit & Dallas.
GO E-A-G-L-E-S!!!!!

aliou FL   April 16th, 2008 10:10 am ET

This endorsement is right on time. Most people are making their mind now because the media and clintons are helping the Ameriican people to see the difference between Obama and Clinton or McCain.

Keep bashing. It' all good for Obama.

Every time you guys twist what he said and that I also heard from his delivery on your TV and websites, I simply see who is lying. You don't know how much you have helped me and others see through what the media really is and who the Clintons really are.

Thank God for your manoeuvers and manipulations.

dj   April 16th, 2008 10:09 am ET

Hillary supporters you all are in denial just like Hillary.

Even if she wins Penn. its still a wrap!!

The fat lady is singing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chris Pasadena   April 16th, 2008 10:09 am ET

Think about who the boss endorsed 4 years ago…another elitist, Kerry.

Clinton to the White House!

Ed,Ellenville,New York   April 16th, 2008 10:09 am ET

Obama will lose if doesn't call for the seating of the Fla. delegates. A crucial ethical blunder to be perceived as the opponent of their voting rights. Which is it Barack? Ethics or unfettered opportunism?

Herman LA, CA   April 16th, 2008 10:09 am ET

Thanks Bruce…

We can do this….

Yes we can…

Obama 08!!!

Susan MO   April 16th, 2008 10:09 am ET

Barack I am for you. I jump for Hillary's Camp

Go Obama

carmen   April 16th, 2008 10:09 am ET

Yesssss !!! Good for you Boss, spoken like a true bitter elitist.

Helene   April 16th, 2008 10:09 am ET

Bravo Bruce. Excellent decision that you will not regret.

Independent for Hillary, Pittsburgh   April 16th, 2008 10:08 am ET

WOW,

This is news. Pretty sad.

I wonder if I should switch my vote?

Clinton-McCain '08

John   April 16th, 2008 10:08 am ET

Hey Bruce, go back to singing about girls and cars. Your ability to pick quality political figures needs help and should be kept to yourself.

Obama supporter always   April 16th, 2008 10:08 am ET

What? Are you saying that the Boss doesnt want a candidate who "misspeaks" all the time. Are you saying that the Boss is wary of someone answering the phone at 3 a.m. with Crown Royal on her breath? Say it aint so!!!

Kelly   April 16th, 2008 10:08 am ET

""Springsteen backed Sen. John Kerry's unsuccessful 2004 presidential bid."
So did half of America, CNN."

The good half!

Marion, NC   April 16th, 2008 10:08 am ET

Whether Obama wins the nomination or not, Springsteen has just backed another loser.

Connie   April 16th, 2008 10:06 am ET

Way to go, Boss! You've chosen wisely.

OBAMA '08

Brooke   April 16th, 2008 10:06 am ET

Why is this news? Who really cares? If people are swayed by this man's endorsement, or any other "celebrity's" endorsement, we have a serious problem in our country.

jean boozer   April 16th, 2008 10:06 am ET

How can one person be called the boss in Obama's race for the white house? In my opinion I feel Mr Obama has become a little arrogant with some of his speeches. I'm sure my comment won't make the comment section.

John   April 16th, 2008 10:05 am ET

Who cares?! Why is this even news? At least its better than the story about 50 cent , who can't even vote, backing him. Can we get a story on Obama's policies that he is running on or is there not enough material?

missy, nashville, tn   April 16th, 2008 10:05 am ET

i've always been a boss fan, but his is the first thing he has done that isn't a hit. I guess the boss like bigots and racist. and big time liars. but also the boss endorsed Kerry, so I guess the boss has chosen to line up behind losers

Paul - TX   April 16th, 2008 10:05 am ET

We'd be better off if Obama was endorsing Bruce for President.

Luis   April 16th, 2008 10:05 am ET

Oh, I guess Obama is a lock now……..comical.

Print something newsworthy………………………

Why does it matter?   April 16th, 2008 10:04 am ET

Why does it matter that Bruce Springsteen is endorsing him? I am happy that he has the endorsement, but is this really news? Let's not lose focus.

Obama '08

Kelly   April 16th, 2008 10:04 am ET

People in Pennsylvania love the Boss, since NJ is our neighbor and the Jersey Shore is the Philly shore. Practically a hometown boy.

HK   April 16th, 2008 10:04 am ET

Best. Endorsement. Ever.

Karen in Cape Cod   April 16th, 2008 10:04 am ET

denise   April 16th, 2008 10:04 am ET

all well and good but he's not a superdelegate

Abush   April 16th, 2008 10:04 am ET

Pennselvania, No wonder, all eyes are on you,… your making a fool out of yourself, rather get to your senses and vote,…. you are being punked, Obama is telling it like it is. The whole world is "bitter" .. just incase you dont know.

sheri   April 16th, 2008 10:03 am ET

I was waiting for Bruce to tell me who he's voting for…do these people really think we're hanging on their every word and that they have any influence on intelligent voters?

John, Washington DC   April 16th, 2008 10:03 am ET

I guess that means the 'boss' is not bitter?

James   April 16th, 2008 10:03 am ET

Who cares, hopefully it will do him as much good as it did Kerry and he will not win either.

marylee wagerman atlanta,ga   April 16th, 2008 10:03 am ET

Susan MO

I guess you prefer a President that lies?

julie MN   April 16th, 2008 10:03 am ET

I'm so glad this race is still going, I can then take notes of all the far left radicals in the dem party, I'm a Democrate, BUT not far left! Not to mention I get to see which news shows, newspapers, talk radio are supporting this radical far left agenda! Very interesting. As for Obama at the start of this heated election, people were yelling he's anti-American, and you know what, HE IS. It's come full circle…

Danielle   April 16th, 2008 10:02 am ET

Hopefully, we hear who Brittany Spears is endorsing soon, because I vote for the candidate with the most rock stars supporting them. Let's get real.

Indiana Voter   April 16th, 2008 10:01 am ET

Yea!!!!!

Obama all the way!!

A Proud Typical Ordinary American   April 16th, 2008 10:00 am ET

That does it!
Bruce, 50 cents, Snoop Dog, Al, Jesse, Oprah, Ted, John K all endorsing Barry. You just can't go wrong with all these big guns rooting for Barry.

I think I'll look at all the issues and decide for MYSEL:F who to vote for in November!!!

Jean   April 16th, 2008 10:00 am ET

GO OBAMA!!!!!

Thanks! Bruce!

BL-NYC   April 16th, 2008 9:59 am ET

Amazing how when Senator Obama gets a celebrity endorsment its news!
Senator Clinton gets a new endorsment every day people!

I can't wait to NOT vote for Obama.

mollygonz   April 16th, 2008 9:59 am ET

Everything he said was right on! Way to go Bruce!!!

Bitter   April 16th, 2008 9:58 am ET

I'm bitter that Obama has been able to buy the vote.

I'm angry that this nomination has been rigged by the DNC

Steven James   April 16th, 2008 9:58 am ET

The Boss has spoken! Good call Bruce! Would you consider being his running mate?

Eddie   April 16th, 2008 9:58 am ET

I feel Obama is not perfect but Hillary the lady who think she was called by God scares me.I will cast my vote for Obama too, because both candidates have thier appeal and thier short comings. It just seems Hillary is more disingenuine.

Mota Nginya - Georgia   April 16th, 2008 9:57 am ET

I am not sure about the importance of this endorsement. The last time I checked The Boss was not a supper delegate but what ever the case might be, any endorsement, irrespective of wheather it comes from a non grata is important. On that note I'll like to also announce here that I have endorsed Senato Barrack Obama for President.

m   April 16th, 2008 9:57 am ET

Well, if Bruce Springsteen wants Obama, then Obama should be elected. What is this anyway? Everytime anyone says anything good about Obama, it gets headlines…when so many people endorse Hillary, no media even bats an eye.

MP-Pennsylvania   April 16th, 2008 9:57 am ET

Susan MO,

We are not insulted. Obama said the truth.

Unemployed middle aged woman for Obama.

Terry   April 16th, 2008 9:56 am ET

I like Bruce Springstten and the E Street Band. But who he supports or does not support for president does not sway me in the least.

Jonathan   April 16th, 2008 9:55 am ET

Looks like Springsteen is backing another loser.

Reality check #1   April 16th, 2008 9:55 am ET

Hopefully Obama's campaign with Springsteen's backing will go the way of the Kerry campaign.

Obama support in Iowa   April 16th, 2008 9:52 am ET

Will Hillary support Obama when he wins the nomination? Inquiring minds want to know.

kp   April 16th, 2008 9:52 am ET

I believe Springteen has it exactly right. Come on dems lets rally around Obama!

Xavier of Saint Louis, MO   April 16th, 2008 9:52 am ET

Smart man!

jean jaye   April 16th, 2008 9:51 am ET

Dear Bruce, you backed the wrong guy in 2004 and now the wrong guy in 2008. Hillary will win PA and the remaining states. Unfortunately the Obama train has run out of gas but mostly credibility.

MP-Pennsylvania   April 16th, 2008 9:51 am ET

Now this is from an American who knows what is going around, not like Elton John who has no clue.

Ovitshio Branco   April 16th, 2008 9:50 am ET

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO WHAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT???????????????????
Maybe it's The Boss's fault Kerry lost the election. DARN YOU Springsteen, darn you to heck!

Marc in DeKalb, IL   April 16th, 2008 9:49 am ET

Well, unlike Elton John, at lease he's born in the USA…

Ha.. ha… … *cough*

elitist snob   April 16th, 2008 9:48 am ET

Barack Obama IS elitist.

He was elitist as a child when he chose to live in Hawaii with his white grandparents (racist whit granny)…
instead of living in Indonesia with his single (but twice married?) white mother.

TheLeftNut   April 16th, 2008 9:47 am ET

"Springsteen backed Sen. John Kerry's unsuccessful 2004 presidential bid."

So did half of America, CNN.

Foreign observer   April 16th, 2008 9:47 am ET

One more reason why "out of touch" is a foolish old politics comment

Dave, PA   April 16th, 2008 9:47 am ET

Bruce Springsteen's opinion is sure going to swing my vote!

Venus   April 16th, 2008 9:47 am ET

Thank you Bruce! Well said! Go Obama!

Tony Burroughs   April 16th, 2008 9:47 am ET

While I usually dismiss celebrity endorsements, the timing on Springsteen backing Obama could be pretty telling. Springsteen has made a career of illustrating the plight of those savaged by an economy collapsing around them. Will this endorsement resonate in Pa.? I think so.

Cammi317   April 16th, 2008 9:47 am ET

Now who could argue with the Boss? C'mon everyone, sing along "Born in the USA, I was born in the USA."

Butch   April 16th, 2008 9:47 am ET

Like his endorsement really influences how people vote….Why is this news??

don't worry, be happy   April 16th, 2008 9:47 am ET

The democratic party has been experiencing a slow split for the last 10 years.

Obama has accentuated and capitalized on that schism for personal political gain.

On one side you have the left wing elitists who intellectually embrace the idea of equality- but can not and do not put it into practice.

They continue to look down their noses at the less fortunate, who they label uneducated, and then profess to want to "save them".

They support Obama. Because of his skin color, African Americans also overwhelmingly support him, irregardless of political, educational or economic position

On the other side you have the lifelong democrats who are more centrist and populist. They believe in democracy and have protested marched and worked for equality. They see all Americans as one people with a shared future. They support Clinton.

We WILL NOT come together just for party loyalty and unity in Nov. We have a right and an obligation to support the BEST Candidate.

TheLeftNut   April 16th, 2008 9:46 am ET

"BRUUUUUUUUCE!"

As most endorsments… that's nice.

trellskig   April 16th, 2008 9:46 am ET

"The Boss" knows who the real deal is.

Very nice…Obama 08

***AMERICAN***   April 16th, 2008 9:46 am ET

Thats great! Go Obama!

Dan   April 16th, 2008 9:45 am ET

Steelers' owner, the boss . . . this is mainstreet not elite-street.

Obama may close in on Clinton this week. This is better than 1000s of small town mayors–really!

Jim Shimmer   April 16th, 2008 9:45 am ET

The right thing to do. Lets unite behind the candidate that gets the nomination and lets not act childish if our candidate loses.

LETS VOTE FOR THE COUNTRY! OBAMA ALL THE WAY!
WILL SUPPORT WHOEVER WINS! DEMOCRATS 09!!!!!

Ardnuas   April 16th, 2008 9:45 am ET

Thank you Bruce, this is why YOU are the Boss!!!!!!!!
We need Barack to UNITE us and NOT DIVIDE us like Annie Oakley is trying to do.
Obama/Edwards 08 Si Se Puede

HSNP   April 16th, 2008 9:45 am ET
