The Republican National Committee says it raised $36 million in first quarter.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – The Republican National Committee plans to report more than $31 million cash-on-hand, with no debt, through the end of last month in its next Federal Election Commission filing on April 20, RNC Chairman Mike Duncan announced Thursday.

The RNC says it has raised more than $36 million during the first three months of this year.

DJ, LA, CA   April 17th, 2008 3:02 pm ET

How much of that money came from the oil industry, Haliburton, or govt. contractors that are profiteering in Iraq?

Alonzo Demetrius   April 17th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

As a reminder, there hasn't been a nasty, hateful campaign between two republicans to deal with like the democrats are having to finance. Such a waste…

The O   April 17th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

And OBAMA rasied that and more in one month. you guys have got to be scared of OBAMA

"When Democrats outraise Democrats"

Should be:

"When Democrats outraise Republicans"

benson   April 17th, 2008 2:43 pm ET

Gotta love it.

When Democrats outraise Democrats, Democratic supporters use it as evidence that they have the support of the people this year. When Republicans outraise Democrats, the same Democratic supporters will turn around and say, "See! I told you Republicans were the party of the rich".

All while ignoring all of the rich Hollywood elites, billionaires, oil executives, etc. donating to the Dems.

Kaseam Ali, Philly, PA   April 17th, 2008 2:43 pm ET

The entire RNC can't raise the cash that Obama pulls in.

Henry Miller, Cary, NC   April 17th, 2008 2:27 pm ET

Ron Paul could manage that much all by himself. It strikes me as significant that the whole Republican Party can barely do as well as the one man they treated with so much disdain.

Wake up, GOP! Read the numbers! The neo-cons have managed to pervert the Party's stated philosophies, but that doesn't mean they can count on the support of the (former) members of the Party. A large number of us will take our allegiances elsewhere rather than vote for the bible-thumping bigots who have made the term "conservative" synonymous with war-mongering, intolerant, religious zealotry.

The Republican Party once stood for limited government, fiscal restraint, and a decent respect for the freedoms of American citizens and for the sovereignty of other nations. No more. It has abandoned those ideals.

And, guess what, we who still hold to those ideals have no choice at all but to abandon the Party. You no longer represent our views and no longer hold philosophies we can respect.

Dora   April 17th, 2008 2:25 pm ET

Sharon Minnesota it is a Karl Rove strategy pure and simple. By getting people to vote for McCain instead of Obama they are hoping to pull in more Republicans and retake the congress. You can see Karl Rove's finger prints all over it.

Mike - Texas   April 17th, 2008 2:23 pm ET

Who is the party of the rich?

Let's see, the Democrats elected to office represent more rich districts, by a large margin, than do Republicans. That was stated by CNN earlier this year.

When Florida went through the recounts during the Bush / Gore election, all the media could talk about was how much money Bush raised. The media neglected to tell the whole story as usual. For all of the money that was collected for the Gore side, 90% was donated by only 8 donors, while Bush's donors nickel and dimed him to death.

Darth Vadik, CA   April 17th, 2008 2:23 pm ET

CHERYL FOR HILLARY,

I love you for what you just said, finnaly a sign that the Democrats can come together.

Darth Vadik, CA   April 17th, 2008 2:21 pm ET

The whole party raised 36 million in 3 months, and Obama and Hillary raised about 90 million couple months ago and about 52 last months.

mitch from ark.   April 17th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

the"obama movement",has raised all of it's money,from individual donations,from 1 1/2 million people.so,check your facts xtina.clinton gets a lot of money from special interests,as well as mccain.

Ken   April 17th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

Its amazing how stupid "real americans" are. According to their logic, if liberals complain about the economic mess the [R]s have gotten us into, then it is up to liberals to finance it! Talk about, "safe to say you're an idiot".

But please all you Bush and McBush fans, and especially all you 28% true-believers, waste all you can giving to the losing side. I want to see you throwing your money down the drain, since I've seen enough of mine wasted by the so-called fiscally conservative [R]s that were in charge up to 2006, and who still roadblock a meaningful solution to THEIR mess. I'm LMAO at you morons who call yourself conservative, but who don't know the meaning of the word. Your only hope is that the voting IQ of the American public is even lower than in 2000 and 2004.

Chriss   April 17th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

The vast majority of Obama's donors are from individuals many of which are first time contributors - because so many have found him inspirational and want him to succeed - that is what has helped him raise so much money.

Small contributions from so many really adds up!

rezagui1@hotmail.com   April 17th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

It's funny how the right wing extremists are criticizing Obama for outraising Republican's, since he is supposed to be for change. Change comes from support, support comes in the form of money, the money is used to promote the ideas people are supporting. This is why McCain can't raise much money, he doesn't have the support of the people. This is why he will lose, not because of a lack of money, but its cause, a lack of support. It will be such a pleasure to see conservatives take a back seat in politics for years to come. They have shown this country what their policies are good for - them and their rich friends, at the expense of our economy and our national security. Absolutely shameful!

shane   April 17th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

Every last penny of it came from Big oil. Honestly, after 8 years of the Bush administration who other than Big oil would donate to anything Republican? Oh i forgot Halliburton.

Chriss   April 17th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

Wow!

I guess Obama alone will easily outpace the RNC, especially with their unauthorized spending sprees by those in control of the funds.

Veterans for Obama   April 17th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

XTINA,

The difference is Obama raised his money from soooooo many more donors. He averages under $100 per donation. these aren't big money donors, they are people, regular people, who are giving what they can because they want change. They see this as an oppurtunity we MUST pounce on. Hillary is gettjing lots of $ too, because she also has the right policies. Many of us dems. differ on the personalities, but at the end we Know it will take a DEMOCRAT to save this nation from disaster.

vince - Phoenix   April 17th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

i wonder how what trhe DNC raised, beside's it blood pressure by Hillary having to be dragged off stage kicking and screaming at the convention!

I am sure the republicans haven't had THIS much fun since the days of Tricky Dick Nixon…

and after ROVE…. "THAT'S" really saying something!

Ca Native   April 17th, 2008 1:39 pm ET

All those gloating about Obama's fundraising numbers… WHAT is he doing with this money??

Spending all of it on the primary contest fighting Hillary!

What is John McCain doing with his money??

Saving it.

Typical liberals thinking. This is how you earned 8-yrs of President Bush… over-confidence in your socialist candidates and your fundraising!

Independent in DC   April 17th, 2008 1:38 pm ET

Mike, please be informed. It was not the pledge of allegiance. It was the national anthem. It is not a prerequisite to put your hand over your heart during the national anthem. Obama, as well as myself and others recognize this and at sporting events etc I fold my hands in front of me during the national anthem just as Obama did. Note that this is not an attack against you, just a little enlightenment. All of this political conjecture is pointless and ridiculous. Wake up people. Flag pins? Are we serious?

Lisa   April 17th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

I can understand why wealthy people would donate and vote for Republicans, but how any person who makes under $200,000 a year or has a teenager that is close to 18 years old in the next 8 years could vote for one.

Where are the 'permanent' troops in Iraq, or the troops to continue fighting in Afghanistan, of the new ones needed to invade Iran coming from? How the moron's in the middle and southern part of this country can continue to vote against themselves is beyond me!

Jeff Langer   April 17th, 2008 1:35 pm ET

The RNC and McBush need to understand the country wants the war to end, someone to fix the mortgage meltdown, and gas prices that don't require a sedative everytime we fill up. Yes, it's time for a change and that's why the Democrats will win in the fall.

jimmy vekmen   April 17th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

OBAMA ALONE COULD RAISE MUCH MORE MONEY THAN THE
REPUBLICAN PARTY AND ITS RICH DONORS.
HILLARY CAN RAISE JUSTS AS MUCH AS THE REPUBLICANS,
MORE THAN MCCAIN CAN.
PUT OBAMA AND HILLARY TOGETHER AND THE MONEY WILL POUR IN LIKE A TORRENT.

HILLARY CLINTON IS THE NOMINEE WHO CAN WIN THE INDEPENDENTS, THE WHITE VOTE, THE ELDERLY, THE DISENFRANCHISED OF MICHIGAN AND FLORIDA AND MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL SMALL TOWN AMERICA.

OBAMA CANNOT GET THE NOMINATION AND NEITHER CAN
HILLARY, THE SUPER DELEGATES ARE NOW DELIBERATING.

INDEED. DEMOCRATS ALL AGREE , THEY WILL NEED AND WANT A DEMOCRAT IN THE WHITE HOUSE AND WILL NEED THE STRONGEST TEAM TO BEAT THE REPUBLICANS. IT SHOULD BE OBVIOUS TO AMERICANS WHICH CANDIDATES GOT THE MOST VOTES IN THE PRIMARY CAMPAIGNS.

Just looks like the people are not wiling to accept McCain… no wonder from my side

Dear Darko, just because some people have faith, don't mean they waste their money on a candidate..

Just send my donation to Obama, it still feels as good as ever…..

xtina, chicago il   April 17th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

the "Obama movement" is supposed to be a "change" from the old ways of politics, but it looks as if they've got the BIG MONEY donors. So who is the rich party?

chris isner   April 17th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

Now that Clinton yes-yes-yes! has taken her one argument for a superdelegate overthrow of the popular vote off the table, stating emphatically that Obama indeed can beat McCain, her dismissal from this race should shortly follow a likely lackluster showing in PA.

Once she is finally dismissed, the tidal wave hundreds of millions that will come rolling in for Obama should do a pretty good job of wiping any Republican competition off the board.

Scott, Wichita   April 17th, 2008 1:07 pm ET

Yes its less than Obama did in a month… but wait, aren't the liberals proclaiming to be closer to the common people than the rich Republicans?

Huh…

Independent in DC   April 17th, 2008 1:01 pm ET

LOL…Obama raised that and more in three consecutive months. No wonder McCain is sweating. Can't say that I blame him for trying to press Obama on the campaign finance issue. He can't hold a candle to him when it comes to raising money and he knows it.

A REAL American   April 17th, 2008 12:58 pm ET

Uhh, Democrat, who exactly are you calling "elitist"? How much money has Obama been raking in? Quite a bit more, so I think it's safe to say you're an idiot to believe that.

The irony is that liberals, mostly Obamabots, have been cryin' and screaming the loudest about how resentful they are about gas prices and the economy in general, so how is it that they have all this money to donate to his campaign? Maybe they should have used that cash a little more wisely to help out…. naaaah, there's WAY too much thinking involved to do that!

Gene   April 17th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

Republicans 're wasting time—this election belongs to the Democrat…QUITE SIMPLE…..

DEMOCRATIC 08……………………………………………………..

Darko - New Orleans, LA   April 17th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

Why so much emphasis on money raised?

So what if Obama is outraising everyone 2 to 1. His polling sure isn't 2 to 1. It only shows that he has to spend twice per vote. Or that he's getting most of his support from those with cash on hand to waste…doesn't sound like poor and middle america to me.

It's kinda funny when you look at like that…$/vote. Only in America.

I've never donated a dime to a political party. That doesn't stop me from voting.

Hillary or McCain - There IS no other choice   April 17th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

If big mouth Obama wins the Democratic primary, I will start donating to McCain.

That doesn't matter that money was given from rich elitist like Hilary and John Mccain Barack Obama in 1 Month raise that amount and did so from the help of small donors that donated not special interest groups and things like this Obama is going to win and Obama do not let them try to make you take public finacing if you do you will not be able to play ad for ad with the republican so NO PUBLIC FInacing we are trying to win this election with no distactions

Sharon Minnesota   April 17th, 2008 12:45 pm ET

WASHINGTON — Barack Obama often boasts he is "the only candidate who isn't taking a dime from Washington lobbyists," yet his fundraising team includes 38 members of law firms that were paid $138 million last year to lobby the federal government, records show.
Those lawyers, including 10 former federal lobbyists, have pledged to raise at least $3.5 million for the Illinois senator's presidential race. Employees of their firms have given Obama's campaign $2.26 million, a USA TODAY analysis of campaign finance data shows.

Jennifer   April 17th, 2008 12:37 pm ET

The Republican National Committee should donate it to the deficit caused by their boys in the White House and Congress….and as for you, Ian, Hillary Clinton is not a scumbag - she is a wonderful US Senator who has worked hard for our veterans. She voted against the bankruptcy bill - instead of the lie that Sen. Obama was stating that she voted with the Republicans….people just hate the Clintons because they want someone to hate….she is a nice lady, and a terrific Senator. Shame on you for saying such a personal, nasty thing.

That is all.

Dawn   April 17th, 2008 12:35 pm ET

It takes a lot of money to steal and election.

It won't work this time because Americans are sick of greedy, dishonest Republicans. If people had thought for one second before they voted for George Bush, we wouldn't be in this mess today.

Don't sell America down the tube with the blood of our soldiers for selfish reasons–vote smart, vote Democratic.

OBAMA IS A BIG LIAR — YET HAS THE AUDACITY TO ATTACKED CLINTON ABOUT BOSNIA

OBAMA LIED ABOUT BEING RACIALLY AMBUSH:

From the Chicago Tribune, By Kirsten Scharnberg and Kim Barker

"….Memories of a racial awakening?

He came across an article in Life magazine that he later would describe as feeling like an "ambush attack."

The article included photos of a black man who had destroyed his skin with powerful chemical lighteners that promised to make him white. Instead, the chemicals had peeled off much of his skin, leaving him sad and scarred, Obama recalled."

Yet no such Life issue exists, according to historians at the magazine. No such photos, no such article…."
