From

(CNN) - John McCain made nearly $420,000 in taxable and non-taxable income in 2007, according to the Arizona senator's tax returns just released by his presidential campaign.

McCain's 2007 income includes his approximately $162,000 Senate salary, over $176,000 in book royalties, $23,000 in Social Security income, and over $58,000 from his Navy pension. (View McCain's tax returns [PDF])

The filing does not include his wife Cindy's much larger income - the two have long filed separate tax returns. An heiress to a beer distributing company, Cindy McCain is estimated to be worth approximately $100 million. But since those assets are in his wife's name, McCain is unable to tap into them for his presidential bid.

Ahhh...everybody quit crying about his salary and his wife's inheritance!
Don't feel sorry for yourself because you did not marry into money. How 'bout the Clinton's net worth? And for those not educated enough, you can be employed and earn social security income. Let's all quit worrying about everybody else and do something yourself!!

Tracey   April 18th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

Yes McCain donates to charities however its to his own charity. By the way what is the John Cindy Foundation and Miscelleous charity?

Yes Obama made 4M off his book, but he just got finsh paying 200k worth of student loans and Michell sure hell ain't worth 100M!!!

Some people will fall for anything!!! That's why he paid an accountant firm 24k to prepare this disclosure for you!!!

Get wise people!!! McCain could sell many of you swamp land in Arizona!!

just 1 soldier   April 18th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

As a minority soldier who served twice in Iraq I want a president who will take care of the military. McCain can do that no matter if he does get Social Security and his wife is worth over 100 million. Look at the Clinton campain they make tons of money as well but they dont get much flak about it. You Americans have to look at who is doing what and not what party or anything else. This nation needs help and America needs to stop being so spoiled

Jason   April 18th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

Chris McCain did release his wife's earnings in senate disclosure forms.

Chris, McCain has grown children that have recieved money from his wife that is why she wanted to keep it private.

Clinton is not releasing names of foreign donors to the Clinton library. There could be conflict of interest like with Dubai.

Clinton is not releasing her 2007 tax returns.

Clinton is not releasing her earmark requests.

Clinton won't release her detailed tax returns for any years just summaries.

Clinton won't release records on the pardoning process.

Clinton won't release her travel schedule from 2000-2006 and there is a report that it would be politically bad.

Obama won't release records on meetings from illinois senate involving rezko.

Janet   April 18th, 2008 4:39 pm ET

1. John McCain has every right to collect social security. He paid into just like anyone else gainfully employed who reaches the age of 65.

2. His wife's income is irrelevant.

3. He does more to cut useless government spending than either Clinton or Obama have even thought about doing.

Check the facts people! John McCain is an honorable man. Sure, he's made mistakes, but he owns up to them, admits them and even better rarely repeats them, which means he learns from them. One could only wish that Clinton could learn to quit lying because she always gets caught in them, and then good ole Bill goes out and opens his mouth and makes it even worse.

One of the things that we need to change in this country is drawing social security when you are working. Also, to continue to pay a U.S. Representative and Senator their salary after they leave Congress is one of the most stupid things I can think of.

McCain's wife is an Anheuser Busch heiress. Why on God's earth is Senator MCCain drawing Social Security when his wife is worth $100,000,000. No wonder this country is going down the toilet.

CNN, your the best. I have one complaint. ABC ticker goes on

putting my thoughts in writing for you and It, to be honest,

carefully grafted and you finally pushed, "submit comment" and
it went to "this page cannot be displayed." I am tired of it.

I guess you people are dumb.Everyone is entitiled for SS just like you and me.Why should Mccain be different?Dont you guys realised that the SS money comes from our paychecks?Everytime when they deduct your paycheck for Federal taxes they also deducted for Social Security taxes that be used for Social Security.I believed Mccain are entitiled for it because he works for a living in a navy and he paid for that social security taxes. Its not for the rich its for everyone. The only reason it doesnt works is because governement is indebted so much that they own people on their social security benefit. So whoever you are,you should checks what social security benefit means, and please check your W2 where it listed your social security benefit. It shows how much you know ow the systems works

Jason   April 18th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

McCain gets social security because of his time in the military.

McCain unlike Obama and Clinton served in the military.

McCain paid into social security for 22 years when he was in the military.

That is where he gets that money from not because he is a senator.

Nice of CNN not to point that out. The military gives you the checks for the money you paid into it.

John   April 18th, 2008 4:30 pm ET

To Nick: "You liberals don't understand these concepts though because you all majored in hippy subjects in school and don't know anything about economics and finance."
Nice try knucklehead, but its your puppet, McDummy that does does not understand these comcepts ...by his own admission. He always wears his flag lapel pins, but then votes against any veteran bill that comes up such as the latest on the GI bill for education benefits. This after the jingoist flag-waving statement, "SUPPORT THE TROOPS" which doesn't mean much to most of the intelligence starved Rethugs. Also for someone who has been in a prison camp for 5 years and claimed to not have PTSD is a stretch by anyone's imagination. Combined with the time in captivity and his violent
anger, this guy is a walking time bomb. Ever see the "Manchurian Candidate"? I think the Swift-Boaters in South Carolina in 2000 may have known something that they were not willing to share with the nation when Shrub and Evil Karl did a number on him. Doesn't say much about his intelligence when he jumps back in bed with them 7 years later. Have fun in your fog induced world!!

Jason   April 18th, 2008 4:29 pm ET

To Msladyjames, Do you find it offensive that Clinton and Obama are taking senate salary increases while McCain refused to take one since 1991.

McCain is getting paid 80,000 as a senator while Clinton and Obama are getting paid 162,000.

Do you find it offensive that Clinton is charging interest for her 5 million loan.

Do you find it offensive that Clinton and Obama made 25 million off their books while McCain donated all his 1.8 million royalties to charity.

McCain has too much integrity to ever win the presidency. He is being smeared when he has far more integrity than Clinton or Obama.

Sketch   April 18th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

Nobody seemed to have a problem with John Kerry being married to a woman in the billionaire club. Why is it a problem for McCain to be married to a measly millionaire?

Re: Social Security. Those who pay in should receive back.

Jason   April 18th, 2008 4:24 pm ET

McCain paid into social security for 22 years in the military.

McCain donated 1.8 million to charity from all his books.

Clitnon and Obama profited the money. Clinton and Obama have profited 25 million off their books combined.

McCain doesn't make 162,000 as a senator. Obama and Clinton make that.

McCain makes 80,000 as a senator. McCain hasn't accepted a pay raise in the senate since 1991 because he voted against pay raises then. McCain has donated the 450,000 to charity from senate increases since 1991.

I am so tired of McCain being smeared.

Janet   April 18th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

You democrats don't think a war hero deserves social security? He fought the enemy and was tortured so you disloyal people could have free speech and demean him? He is a better person than I ..I would wash your mouths out with lysol!

Peter Korsten   April 18th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

It astounds me when many folks who post comments, take cheap and myopic shots at the candidates, in both parties.
Take for instance the fact that John McCain has his hands in the cookie jar because he collects social security. He made his contributions and that is how the system rewards every American down the road. I similar futile argument bwould be, since the liberal politians want to increase our taxes, and if so convicted, why don't they increase their tax payments and tax deductions in favor of uncle Sam, immediately!
Needless to say, and what many folks fail to realize is: "God is in control and He sets up and removes people in government and rulership positions."
So, the best advice is to pray that God's will be done in the 2008 Election also and to stop attacking and lambasting the candidates' and smear their intentions and characters.

Jason   April 18th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

McCain donated 1.8 million of all the royalties to his five books to charity. Clinton and Obama both profited the money.

Since 1991 McCain has donated all the increases in his senate career to charity. McCain has taken 80,000 each year for his senate salary while the senate money has gone up to 165,000. Overall McCain has donated 450,000 of the increases in his senate pay to charity since 1991.

I can't believe how mean people are to mccain. He donates all his money from his books and senate increases to charity and you are getting on him about social security. McCain paid into it when he was in the military for 22 years. That is not his decision that he gets the check.

Clinton is paying herself interest on her 5 million dollar loan when she is worth 109 million.

Clintons profited over 20 million from their books while McCain gave all to charity.

Obama profited 4 million from his book.

McCain doesn't accept senate salary increases while Clinton and Obama do.

Newman   April 18th, 2008 4:14 pm ET

Wow, $23K in social security for 2007! Man, how do I get in on that? I would love to get 23K every year from social security. Show me how to do it, John! Do I have to be senator and have a rich heiress for a wife to qualify?

John Doner   April 18th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

Here's something I found interesting about old man McCain:

In his 1992 Senate bid, McCain was joined on the campaign trail by his wife, Cindy, as well as campaign aide Doug Cole and consultant Wes Gullett. At one point, Cindy playfully twirled McCain's hair and said, "You're getting a little thin up there." McCain's face reddened, and he responded, "At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you ." McCain's excuse was that it had been a long day. If elected president of the United States, McCain would have many long days. [The Real McCain, PoliPoint Press, 2008.]

I can't wait until the debates between Obama and McCain start.

Let's check out McCain's tax return....talk about triple dipping. He receives a paycheck as Senator....our money. Social Security....our money and military retirement.....our money AND his wife is a millionaire many times over. And this country can't afford health coverage for Children. Does this make sense? One way we could help Social Security is not to allow Millionaires to take it and if someone is currently employed by the government they should not be allowed to draw both a military pension and Social security pension in addition to their salary.....THis is truely over kill and wasteful when we have seniors not being able to afford their medications.

We'll just chaulk it up to their fair share, the rich should pay more even though they will never recieve a social benefit. It's the progressive way!!

Jax   April 18th, 2008 3:53 pm ET

It's funny you all have commented on the same thing here.....the social security. (CNN's whole point of posting it). I'm going to play devils advocate here...... If you think that only the poor collect social security you are kidding yourself. Social Security was set up as a retirement plan.....so if McCain was contributed to it his entire life (not to mention his other sacrifies) then why can't he collect it?
Why do liberals always have this idea that everything has to be "fair" Lets really tax the heck out of the wealthy, i mean they can afford it So if you are successful, make good choices and manage your money you should be screwed.......ridiculious!

Jon   April 18th, 2008 3:47 pm ET

McCain's charitable contributions are a farce! He donates to his foundation, the John and Cindy McCain Foundation, which in turn, donates large sums to his kids' private schools. So, he basically gets a tax deduction to send his kids to private schools. Sneaky!

As for the Social Security, he's entitled to what he put into the system, just like everyone else.

This is in part what is wrong with Social Security. Why are we paying John McCain a Social Security check? He doesn't NEED it. Social Security should be reserved for those retirees that need it so that some money can be left over for those people who may need it in 2040.

Erin in NJ   April 18th, 2008 2:57 pm ET

If John McCain earned $162,000 from the Senate and $176,000 in book royalties and $58,000 from his Navy pension – all of which he is entitled to – WHY is he collecting Social Security? That money should be reserved for people who are not earning nearly $400k per year. THAT should be the lead story on CNN and every other news site.

Peter, Dallas   April 18th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

I am undecided, both in party and vote, but being transparent to the people you would serve, is part of honesty. If Obama had not released ALL his and wife's taxes, both Clinton and McCain may have not, as evident with either HIllary's argument and McCain's late release.

Hillary has not yet released her 2007 taxes, neither is Cindy (McCain's left hand woman). Whao! what a way to show transparency to the people; of course, charity contribution is father-fetched.

I thought this man was former Navy? I never knew military men fought wars for financial gain. Very interesting how McCain calls Obama, "reckelessly dishonest" when he's the one accepting lobbyist's $ handed under the table. Our country has had enough of self-righteous bigotry, Obama for president!

Ring around the Blue Collar   April 18th, 2008 2:41 pm ET

Why didn't McCain volunteer to not draw the Social Security (SSI) or Navy Pension? He clearly doesn't need either with a FAMILY networth over $100Mill. I'm sure there are plently of blue collar senior citizens and retired navy personnel barely making it on the money they draw and would be very angry (or should I say BITTER) to learn that McCain is essentially stealing the money from those more in need to use the money as his pocket change.

Ander   April 18th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Why don't you go ahead and view the tax return before you speak Cindy. Thanks.

Kevin Yonker   April 18th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

He donated $105,467 to the Hensley Family Foundation which contributes millions to childrens charities in Arizona and the USA.

Work that out on a percentage basis...you left wing, closed minded Cindy! Obama is so dirty...it's all coming out. It will overwhelm him by mid-summer. You know, you are the company you keep. Obama keeps some sleezy company.

"Bitter" in Iowa   April 18th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

Wait a minute – he earns almost $400,000, his wife is worth approx $100 million and he gets $23,000 in Social Security?

What is wrong with that picture? I will tell you what!

My mother worked all her life, is now disabled and her Social Security last year was $6,600

Yes, you can call me bitter

Bitter in Texas   April 18th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

Hummmmm....a Semate Salary....Navy Pension....& Social Security on top of that...that looks like tripple dipping to me. Did he ever pay any Social Security tax in order to qualify for those benefits?

Grayson   April 18th, 2008 1:46 pm ET

Seperate tax returns??? If his wife don't trust him with her money, why the heck should we??

Lets set the record straight CNN   April 18th, 2008 1:45 pm ET

Cindy McCain DID lend money to McCain for his 2000 presidential campaign. There is no rule and no reason to believe she won't do it again for his presidential bid THIS time.

Let just make sure the record is straight CNN. McCain is loaded.. no matter how you slice it.. he's got a bunch of cash at his disposal.

Grayson   April 18th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

Oh great! Paris Hilton fast forward 50 years and her John are taking over the White House. I don't think so!

Bob, Papillion NE   April 18th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

If they've always filed separately, its enough for us to see only his return. It would be Cindy's decision alone to release the tax return of a private citizen, not publically accountable for anything. By the way, Schedule A of McCain's return shows cash gifts to charity of $105K...about 25% of his total income. That's very generous, and certainly more than the 10% tithe that's customary in the Christian faith.

Robert Barnett   April 18th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

Actually he made a $105K charitable contribution to the John and Cindy McCain Foundation. He has donated to his own foundation on many previous occasions. Looks like most of the money from the foundation goes to donations to the private schools where his kids are. Sort of continuing to support the elite...

Porter   April 18th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

"What no contributions to charities???" – Cindy

If you actually read the return there's a row for "Gifts to Charity" that has $105,467 next to it. CNN doesn't like to report that though. CNN did report the charitable donations for Clinton and Obama but they're different somehow... and I think we both know what's different: the big 'D' next to their names.

Patricia   April 18th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

Why does he need to collect Social Security income? His Senate salary, his wife's money, and his book royalties just aren't enough for him? No wonder the program is going bankrupt.

CB in Florida   April 18th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

What's up with the separate tax filings Big John? How exactly are you able to collect $23,000 in Social Security income and a big Navy retirement check at the same time you are working as a US Senator? I guess letting America know Cindy is worth 100 million or more could bring the elitist light on you, good looking out for yourself.

AJ, IL   April 18th, 2008 1:39 pm ET

The media should be pressing for full disclosure, not this John only income crap! I'm sure John Mccain is trying to avoid releasing Cindy's income records because he knows he will seen as a rich guy who doesn't care about middle-income Americans.

drew   April 18th, 2008 1:39 pm ET

google obama: courage to face fear (you have to see this)

Jim   April 18th, 2008 1:38 pm ET

"What no contributions to charities???"

Check the return (pdf): $105,467 in charitable contributions.

Tom   April 18th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

Cindy, your mouth runs as much as Obama's. Did you not see the contribution to the family foundation, which in turn contributes to schools? You may disagree with where the money goes, but that's a long way from claiming as you did that he made no contributions at all. You are playing with the truth the same way Obama does.

Mike   April 18th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

Hey Cindy, check your facts. McCain paid over 30% of his AGI in federal taxes and over 27% of his AGI to charity. I'll bet your tax returns don't reflect that level of taxes paid and charities contributed to. In fact I'll bet yours isn't even close.
His AGI was $386,527 and he paid $118,660 in federal taxes last year. That is 30.7% tax.
He also paid $105,467 ($17,213 to Misc. and $88,254 to the John and Cindy McCain foundation) to charities. That is 27.3% of his AGI.

So take your deceptive Liberal banter elsewhere.

If you want legitimacy for your candidate don't make false statements against his opponent. It makes you look uneducated and uninformed. Or maybe you simply cannot read. That would explain it.

Tee   April 18th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

What !!!!!!!! no charitable contributions strictly republican, he will not do anything to help hard working americans trying to make ends meet.
He could afford $4.00 a gallon gas.

ALL ABOARD!!!!!!!NEXT BUS SHADY PINES.

Allison R.   April 18th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

Wow. Social security income huh? That's why there won't be any left when I retire then? He clearly makes less than the other candidates, but please, I'm sure many other Americans could use that social security more than him...
This is why we need some serious reform...

seattle sue   April 18th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

Please explain how McCain had 23,000 in social security income as he has been a congressman/senator since 1982 and under Civil Service Retirement System and that system does not pay into social security.

Well here's a man who clearly needs his social security income. Let's make sure the super rich get what they clearly don't need.

Gail Balling   April 18th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

How elitist to decide he is above the law and the publics expectations and right to know – and choose not to divulge wife's taxes. They are married, live together and campaign together, just like the Clintons and the Obamas. Let's be fair. What is John McCain hiding?

Brandon   April 18th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

sacto joe   April 18th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

The man is on Easy Street, and has been for a long, long time. There's nothing intrinsically wrong with that, except that this is the same dude who labelled Senator Obama "elitist"!

Can you spell "hypocrite", Senator McCain?

Susan - Chicago   April 18th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

Why is he collecting social security when he gets a huge salary as a Senator? He should leave that money in the pot for the little guys who really are going to need it.

CT Chriss   April 18th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

No wonder he can "identify" with the common folk so well!

Mike   April 18th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

His wife's income is not a factor. Michelle Obama didn't need to release hers either in my opinion if she didn't want to. Neither of these women are running for President. Sure they are campaigning for their husbands but they're not running for office and therefore should not be subjected to releasing their returns. It is of no consequence whatsoever.
Now had they filed joint returns then her income would clearly have showed up. But they don't file joint returns do they?
I didn't read McCains return but I'd be very, very surprised if he didn't contribute to some charity. I plan on reading them now just to see. I will be disappointed if there are not significant contributions to charities. The only thing I can think of is that there are significant contributions but they show up on his wife's tax return. In that matter I would urge McCain to have his wife's return released also to show that they do in fact donate. It would certainly lend more credibility to his cause.

Marc, Tacoma Wash   April 18th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

DiamondStarHalo, TN   April 18th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

Cindy, if you had bothered to read the document, it states that he gave approximately $105, 000 to charity, roughly 25% of his income for the year.

to Cindy   April 18th, 2008 1:19 pm ET

Apparently you did not see he donated 105,000 of his 420,000 to charity this year. It's plain as day on his tax returns (page 3 under charity). Apparently you are too stupid or inept or careless to bother other than to simply bash a man you dont' know and support a man you dont' know...

BRAVO!

Mike Tacoma, wa   April 18th, 2008 1:12 pm ET

Cindy,
He has given money to charity but CNN is biased and won't report it. he gave $105,000 plus another $177,000 from book royalties that went to charity. That is just for 2007

Where is Cindy's tax returns-Americans deserve better.? Stingy old man-no contribution to charities....by the way he never care for the poor......is not a surprise..

AJ   April 18th, 2008 1:09 pm ET

Mrs. McCain's income is really no one’s business.

And Cindy, dream on. If you are capable of looking at an electoral map, Obama has significant problems. He will not win Florida or Ohio, Michigan is questionable after Obama's interference when it came to a re-vote. Most of the states that Obama has won during the primary season are republican states and not many (if any) of those have much chance of going to a democrat. The latest news from NY isn’t all that great either. The last poll showed NY being very competitive should Obama be the nominee. On top of that, there is a significant number of Clinton supporters (like me) who will find it difficult to support Obama if he is the nominee, I believe the number was 30% who said they would cross over and vote McCain.

Kaseam Ali, Philly, PA   April 18th, 2008 1:09 pm ET

Obama donated 5.88%
McCain donated 25%

Did you even bother to look at the return?

So who doesn't care about the little guy?????

YWC   April 18th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

WHO IS AN ELITIST? IT MAKES ME SICK WHEN YOU CALL SOMEONE ELSE SOMETHING AND YOU ARE A BIGGER ONE THAN THEM. CINDY WORTH 200MILLION, SHUT UP MCCAIN. GO CHANGE YOUR DEPEND, YOU SMELL.

Mike   April 18th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

Cindy...take a breath, please. The Clintons gave more of their income to charities than the Obamas.

Anne   April 18th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

With that kind of income, does McCain REALLY NEED to collect
his social security?????

And no charitable contributions????

Hillary can whip him!

Pat Va   April 18th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

I find it interesting (and quite telling) that Senator Obama and Senator McCain released their actual tax return that they filed with the IRS whereas the Clintonistas only relased a breakdown of their taxes.

And Hillary's supporters wonder why more people are not supportive of her??? The woman is not trustworthy or honest in any shape, form or fashion, that's why!!!

Charity contributions   April 18th, 2008 1:07 pm ET

His tax returns are linked above. They show $105,467 to charities. There is also a Statement A attachment that shows his wife's wages at $432,991 and total charity contributions at $210,933.

Koze   April 18th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

If Bill Clinton or Michele Obama had refused to release their taxes, there would be such an outrage like you have not seen in a long time.

Cindy McCain is part of the campaign; who knows whether or not a lobbyist paid something into one of her bank accounts.

Teflon John should not get away with hiding a source of income to which he certainly has access.

Hillary should spend a little time attacking McCain instead of her fellow Democrat. Incidentally, I will vote for either one of them. I hope they can get together and run on the same ticket: it would be a double historical time in the history of this great country.

John   April 18th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

His wife's income is not important. She is not running for president, thus she should not expose her income if she does not want to.

Go, McCain.. You can beat them all. Especially, if the Dems don't stop bickering like wee babes

His wife's income is irrelevant. She files separate returns. If she says no, case closed. We're looking at McCain for president. Not his wife. Same goes for Bill Clinton and Michelle Obama. Who cares about their income?

Shakur   April 18th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

I agree Cindy. What's going on with the charitible donations? How transparent is he really and where is Hannity and Bill on this subject?!

FEDUP   April 18th, 2008 1:03 pm ET

This is not about McCains taxes, but everything else gets closed so fast...You cannot say anything negative about Obama, not if you want to get posted. He just got an endorsement from Hamas, which he declined. That doesn't change the fact they prefer him over Clinton, wonder why? Now if he can get Muqtada al-Sadr, and Al Qaeda he would have most of the muslim radicals.

Uncle Sam   April 18th, 2008 1:02 pm ET

Although you won't hear them talk about it, the McCains perform a tremendous amount of charitable service in this country and around the world.

Reality Check   April 18th, 2008 1:02 pm ET

So what! Who cares how much a candidate makes. It's irrelevant. It's not their bank account that matters. Rather, it is their ability to understand voters and the issues that matter to every American. A candidiate can be of moderate income and still look down at average Americans (and shun their values) or a candidiate can do well financially and yet they can understand the average American. It's not the bank account that matters but the attitude. Hillary Clinton understands us and she understands what matters to us in these tough times. She is the only candidiate who gets "it" and who also respects our middle America values. She is the only Democrat who can win the swing states (Ohio, Fl, TN, AK, PA, WV, KY, NH, NM) that the Dems desperately need to win in Nov.

Al, San Francisco, CA   April 18th, 2008 1:01 pm ET

Amazing, here is a Senator with more than 30 years experience in Govt and he makes so little, yet we have an inexperienced Senator with 2 years in the Senate and he makes millions. Something doesn't jive here.

McCain does not have to account for his wife's income. That is the way our tax system works. And what is it to you Obamamites how much his wife makes. At least it is not from speaking engagements as in the case of Bill or from Mrs. Obama's law firm that her husband funneled contracts to during his Illinois Senate term.

McCains income is from legitamite and traceable sources.

McCain receives a pension and Social Security – He really must understand the plight of everyday Americans! The problem is, lots of people are just working with the $23,000 in Social Security. Amazing that he could make over $300,000 a year and still take that money. Charity, anyone?

Cindy is uninformed   April 18th, 2008 12:55 pm ET

Cindy,

Look before you leap. He donated all $177,000 of his book royalties to charity and also donated around 100K to charity as well.

And some of you need to understand that he and his wife have filed separate returns for 26 straight years.

John from Las Vegas   April 18th, 2008 12:55 pm ET

I guess he can't afford to "loan" his campaign any money (like Hillary's 5 million) so he'll have to take PAC funds and scrounge for Republican donations on the (Gasp!!) internet. Can you say..... "looser'?

I have been following your performance over the last couple of weeks and been doing some fact finding on some of the things you've been saying and must say that at the very least you have mild dementia or are infected with the same politician lying style as President Bush and Senator Clinton. Good luck to you but I will vote for someone else come November.

Why Is McCain collecting social security. If he were truly patriotic he would allow the funds that are owed to him to remain in the system to go to retirees who actually need it. Isn't living off his wife's millions enough for him?

Christine Lewis   April 18th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

Obviously they don't want us to see it.

Dem123   April 18th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

Cindy McAIN will be a great first lady.

Michael Lorton, Viriginia   April 18th, 2008 12:52 pm ET

Now that we know what everybody makes..........let's move on. The problems facing America is not how much these candidates and their spouses are paid, but rather how are they going to resolve this nations multipilicty of problems.

Kathie   April 18th, 2008 12:52 pm ET

Why is McCain collecting Social Security???? Between what he earns as a Senator, his pension and clearly his million $$$$ spouse why is he also taking our tax $$$$$?

Cindy McCain also needs to release her tax returns, the sooner the better. She is NOT above the other spouse's in this campaign.

To John   April 18th, 2008 12:52 pm ET

What you are saying is MSNBC, and CNN is picking our president for us, and they are putting obama in the white house as an uncle tom.

Emmanuel   April 18th, 2008 12:52 pm ET

Now because his wife is a heiress the people are not entitled to know how much she worth?, where she is invested and how shes worth that much?. Heiress is treated in a different way, who is elitist now?

Sari, Mpls MN   April 18th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

is it a crime to be rich people? get over it-move on. I am not rich by any means but I certainly won't hold it against McCain that he has some ching.

Nick, Ashburn, Virginia   April 18th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

In response to poster:

"What no contributions to charities??? Keeps it all to himself"

Just because he didn't report charitable contributions on his taxes doesn't mean he didn't give any. Most likely his wife is reporting the charitable contributions since she obviously makes more money then him and it would make more sense to have her take the deduction.

You liberals don't understand these concepts though because you all majored in hippy subjects in school and don't know anything about economics and finance. That is why you all believe the myth that the government controls the price of gasoline.

Anonymous   April 18th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

why is the very wealthy man getting social security? doesnt he have the decency to decline it.

Cathy   April 18th, 2008 12:50 pm ET

Doesn't look like many people bought McCain's book with only $176K in royalties. His SS income and Navy pensions are very interesting too. With a wife worth over $100M, I would expect all his income to go to charity plus more.

lol   April 18th, 2008 12:50 pm ET

hope obama's the nod in november, with all the skeletons coming out of his closet mccain will easily win.

WeNeedaViable3rdParty   April 18th, 2008 12:49 pm ET

There are two things wrong with this story and neither has to do with Cindy's income – remember that he's only publicizing HIS INCOME (not deductions):

1) Where are his earnings from lobbyists?
We all know that he had some or is it under the table?
The Senate salary portion doesn't include contributions from lobbyists.

2) Why is he able to collect Social Security when he doesn't pay into the system and he still works full time?

Raven   April 18th, 2008 12:49 pm ET

Cindy- Look at the return not the biased reporting.

McCain gave $105,000 to charity. Not too shabby.

I know how to read   April 18th, 2008 12:49 pm ET

If you actually looked at the return, you'll see he donated $105,000 to charity. How much did the poster named "Cindy" give? Can't be much, seeing as you don't even know where to find "Charitable Donations" on a tax return!

I am a registered Rep. since 1992. I came to this Country in 1986 and for the first time in my Adult life I will be voting for a Dem.

Barack H. Obama

I am not thrilled about his middle name, but the Man's poliies make sense. We had been running this Country with the same old failed policies for awhile now.

If you keep doing things the same way over and over and again and expect a different result. That equals MADNESS

We didn't talk to Cuba and Castro run the Country for over 40 yrs. What is wrong with our policies They lack COMMON SENSE.

Engage your enemies so reasonable people can see that you tried then Squash them when they don't comply.

Barack you have my support and many other Republicans supporting you. You will WIN

OBAMA 08

media elite directly censor the news in favor of Obama. Just look at MSNBC, and CNN, then look at their owners.

The eleven media organizations have interlocking directorships with each other through 36 other Fortune 1,000 corporations creating a solid network of overlapping interests and affiliations. All eleven media corporations have direct links with at least two of the other top media organizations. General Electric, owner of NBC, has the highest rate of shared affiliations with 17 direct corporate links to nine of 10 other media corporations.

What is surprising about revealing presidential candidates income is none of the citizen of this countries business. Or any wealthy human being in this country no matter if they inherited it or work hard to achieve success. It is noboby's business. Please leave these people alone.

McCain voted against the GI Bill recently. No re-education for the
troops when they arrive home, some, without their limbs. I guess
they will be forced to re-enlist. Without jobs, or re-education what
else can they do?

McCains Health Care plan favors the Big Company that can't afford
to pay Benefits. The will only be obligated to give you a small raise!!!!!

Nikki   April 18th, 2008 12:46 pm ET

Add Cindy McCain's income into the equation and we'll see that he too is an "elitist."

Pretty good move by McCain, keep his wife's income separate, that way, he'll appear to be the President that you'll want to drink a beer with.

fred   April 18th, 2008 12:46 pm ET

It is none of our business what Cindy, Bill or Anti-America Michelle has, they aren't running for office

Obama didn't give much to charity!!! Selfish, Anti-America, racist, elilist!!!

GMF   April 18th, 2008 12:45 pm ET

Um Cindy, did you bother looking at his tax return? He gave something like 125K. Do your homework!

(Hopefully you will do better reseach when examining the candidates.)

Dave   April 18th, 2008 12:45 pm ET

Why does a man who earns over $400,000 in a year and who is married to a woman who is worth approximately $100 million need social security income? McCain should start a trend and return that $23,000 he received this year to the federal government. If everyone contributed who really didn't need that money, then maybe we could start to slightly correct the problem with the social security program.

john   April 18th, 2008 12:45 pm ET

Social Security Income? why not save it for the people that realy need it!

Alfredo   April 18th, 2008 12:44 pm ET

Obama should quit. Obama is the most irresponsible and most degrading candidate I have ever seen.

Obama mocked the Pennsylvannians and all Americans really good. As deamening as Obama so goes Wright and Rezco. Shame on them.

Wake up America! If you want the way Bush had operated/handled the nation over the last 8 years then vote for Obama.

shane   April 18th, 2008 12:44 pm ET

I Guess John didn't have a problem with taking that $23,000 worth of cash from that BIG GOVERNMENT PROGRAM called Social Security.

CHICANO ART, ARIZONA   April 18th, 2008 12:44 pm ET

I believe releasing tax records are important. So are other personal questions. The policy decision for the democrates is starting to show it self. Clinton released a hawkish anti-Iran alliance recently in a swing at McCain, though Obama just looked foolish to Jews who want to know America will protect Israel. Even healthcare is getting dicey when Edwards says he will endorse candidate that shares his values, not making light of his healthcare plan and his feelings about the two Americas.

Ryan   April 18th, 2008 12:44 pm ET

"$23,000 in Social Security income"

old fart. Where's his wife's?

DJ   April 18th, 2008 12:44 pm ET

Fact check Lawrence KS   April 18th, 2008 12:43 pm ET

Cashing on Social Security already? This fellow is too old to be president. AZ is a comprop state, both the senator and his wife share all their properties. Even though they do not file together, they should make their tax return public, as he's running for the highest office in the country.

Pete Torres   April 18th, 2008 12:43 pm ET

Why is a veteran and senator drawing Social Security? His example proves why he is not presidential! He is a drain on the system by accepting this money. Senator, return the money and send someone to college. Make this country better, not drag it down.

DEJI   April 18th, 2008 12:43 pm ET

we need to stop giving millionaires social security. What is wrong with this picture. Does he need that money?

Diva in Pennsylvania   April 18th, 2008 12:41 pm ET

Okay okay...

I must disagree "SayNoTo...":

Bill and Michelle file JOINT returns with Hill and Barack. THAT is why we saw their finances (though I know Bill is wishing they had filed separate returns for '07, LMAO!) Although I am NOT a McBush supporter, it is fair that her earnings are not included because her funds aren't included in the campaigns finances.

Billary on the other hand... She lent millions to her campaign in February, which CLEARLY included money from Bill's deals with CAFTA and China because they file JOINT returns. That's where the investigation should be!

Just wondering . .   April 18th, 2008 12:41 pm ET

Ummm why is a guy who is married to someone who is a millionaire several times over collecting both social security and a Navy pension? I know he is entitled to them but can he not refuse them considering homelss veterens litter the streets and senior citizens in this country often have to choose between their medication and food?

Rich Skowron   April 18th, 2008 12:41 pm ET

Cindy paid for the Straight Talk Express, at the very least the Maverick might show some intestinal fortitude by disclosing their entire tax return. Perhaps the Maverick is too manly to admit his spouse is the bread winner?

No Senator Mccaine has actually donated all of his royalties he has earned from his books to charities. He has also donated any increases in his senate salary to charity since 1991 when he voted against the ridiculous payraise for legislators.
It is just that the liberal media doesn't want you to know that thus it won't be reported unless you get off your lazy butt and do some research for yourself.

alice2   April 18th, 2008 12:39 pm ET

Can we force McCain to make public his spouse's tax returns? If not, why not? The other two have had to post their Total income which includes their spouse.

Jason   April 18th, 2008 12:39 pm ET

McCain has donated all his royalites from his books to charity. That total is 1.8 million to charity. Hillary, Bill and Obama have kept their money from their books.

McCain has donated all his pay increases from the senate since 1991 to charity totaling 450,000. Hillary and Obama have kept their senate pay increases.

Hillary is charging interest to be given back to herself for her 5 million loan while not being able to pay the vendors even though she is worth 109 million.

McCain has disclosed his wife's earnings in senate disclosures which were 15 million. His wife now has three grown children and wants to keep their finances private though that hasn't stopped her two sons from joining the military.

The Dude   April 18th, 2008 12:39 pm ET

This article is not worth posting. Every one knows Lil McBush is already using some of his wife's money on his campaign. If this idiot is willing to break his own campaign finance law, what makes you think he's not using his wirfe's money. This is just an early attempt to justify what everyone will find out as soon as the general election starts.

Obama 08

Jack Walden   April 18th, 2008 12:36 pm ET

Why not his wife's tax record? Just because John Kerry did not release his wife's during his stint to whitehouse is a poor excuse. The purpose of releasing tex records is to show what the family earned unless of course, McCains is a marriage of convenience.

Brian   April 18th, 2008 12:36 pm ET

I find all of this interesting but not surprising.
What I would like to know is why CNN does not change their delegate counter? It is the same day after day. Obama has gained 2 more supers and Clinton has lost 1 yet you don't change the numbers.

MD   April 18th, 2008 12:35 pm ET

How pathetic can the presidential election get?

There are so many more important things to know about the candidates than how much they earned. It is a given that those in politics are rich. So what is the point of obssessing over their income?

In McCain's case, releasing his taxes is a joke. The vastness of his wife's fortunes are well known.

postmon   April 18th, 2008 12:35 pm ET

To SayNo... & CNN: Cindy McCain's income is included in this disclosure. It is $432K per statement A.

To Cindy: Per their itemized deductions the McCain's appear to have contributed over $200K to charity. Doesn't look to me like they're keeping it all to themselves.

Kaci   April 18th, 2008 12:33 pm ET

Sure hope McCain doesn't try to offer himself as the average guy. He's the most "elite" of the bunch. This filing separate ploy they have used for years hopefully won't fool people. Guess he married very well, otherwise people may be able to connect. McCain won't win because not enough Republicans are going to vote, and he won't be able to convince enough Democrats and Independents that he has the WHOLE country's best interest in mind. That is the thing about Obama – it doesn't matter if you are Democrat, Republican or Independent. He wants all Americans who love their country to start working for their country and not working for partisan politics. He has the best chance of uniting this country by reaching across the solidly partisan lines created by 8 years of Bushism.

Greg   April 18th, 2008 12:33 pm ET

LOL, Social Security.

He should give it back.

LM   April 18th, 2008 12:32 pm ET

Why does John McCain get Social Security payments? There should be a cut off for people who make over a certain amount. That's part of why Social Security is in trouble. For some people, it's all they have to live on. Leave that money in the pot for people who actually need it.

bad idea   April 18th, 2008 12:32 pm ET

Cnn is media bias.I noticed that when the previous democrate disclosed their tax returns, they published the amount that they donated to charity. But they did not do so in Mccain case, why?I was wondering how much does Mccain donated to the charity and I have to find it out at fox news.It seems that he has donated $105,000 to charity and donated $177,000 in book royalities and paid taxes of $88,000.Media are supposed to be equal in publishing the candidate but thus Cnn shown preference on their favourite candidate.I am not mccain supporter and I havent decide to vote anyone yet.But I HATE bias media

I would like to see more detail regarding Cheney's tax return and the $1.5 million he claimed in capital gains. It would be very interesting to see how much of that is due to the lucrative contracts that were awarded to Haliburton for work in Iraq. Hmmm....something still stinks in Washington DC!

Jeff   April 18th, 2008 12:26 pm ET

Janette   April 18th, 2008 12:19 pm ET

Wow, for someone who has made 10 times more than what my parents have ever made, McCain makes just a little more than my parents make from social security…goes to show that the wealthy in this country don't contribute to the greater good of our social security, but only to their benefit. No Wonder Social Security is going bankrupt!!!!

Shannon Wadding   April 18th, 2008 12:19 pm ET

How is it that John McCain collects $23,000 in Social Security income while others will never collect because the retirement age is always raised?

Ridiculous.

This from the guy who says the problem with our government is irresponsible spending... I would call giving a monthly pay check to a man worth more than 99% of the citizens of this country is irresponsible.

Why is this man receiving SS on top of his salary and his fully paid benefits? No one else sees something wrong with this?

ariel   April 18th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

But it doesn't list how much he spends on Depends.

Hussien for America   April 18th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

"The filing does not include his wife Cindy's much larger income — the two have long filed separate tax returns. An heiress to a beer distributing company, Cindy McCain is estimated to be worth approximately $100 million."

Clever old man ! May be Hillary should have done the same – -

Jeff   April 18th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

Why is he taking $23,000 in Social Security income?!

That money is suppose to be for a safety net for elders – not money for a guy that makes $400,000 and obiously is doing fine with money.

Richard McCall   April 18th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

With all his earnings and his wife's wealth, why would John McCain draw $23,000 in income from Social Security. That is really ripping off the system.

DEE in fla   April 18th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

i dont care...nor like him

Grif   April 18th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

Why would he want to use His wife's Wealth, to Fund a Public Responsibility? His strength is in Himself, and what he is worth to that Public, and their Country.

Steven Elliott   April 18th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

I understand he has a right to claim it, but does McCain really need the $23k from social security to make ends meet on his modest $400k+ income? I'm never going to see a dime of social security, although they still take it out of my check. It should be reserved for those who really need it, not just automatic. Unbelievable.

Independant   April 18th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

Why don`t we hear more about McCain dumping his first wife, who waited for him while he was a POW, returned home, had a fling with Cindy, divorced his wife then married the rich gal ?????????.

Michael Barker   April 18th, 2008 12:02 pm ET

So let's see, he's a senator, making money from Royalties, not technically retired, and living off social security, excellent. I am so glad Republicans are so fiscally conservative these days. If he's not retired he shouldn't be making money on social security. He's a senator, you think he'd know that. Oh wait I forgot all the loopholes that keep them better paid then the average American.

James, SC   April 18th, 2008 12:02 pm ET

Great job Johnny boy. Now where are the rest? We know that your wife is loaded, but shy does not work for the gov. What we want to learn is, where are your taxes for the other years?

Scott, Newport KY   April 18th, 2008 12:02 pm ET

This is why social security benefits should be means tested.

After further review,Texas   April 18th, 2008 12:02 pm ET

Lets face it ,Cindy is the one who really wants to be in the White House and has the dough to do it .

john   April 18th, 2008 12:02 pm ET

I think we need to cut off Social Security to people making the kind of money McCain makes. Come on, he makes $397k without SS. The average American is living on less than 1/10th that amount!

yeah   April 18th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

What' she worth 5 billion, 10 billion? 20 bill? And he has a long history of being pro-offshoring and anti-union.

Nothing "elitist" there. My God, her obvious botox/plastic surgery and her outfit in the pic alone cost more than any of us will earn in 25 years.

KiloWhiskey - Denver   April 18th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

The money's in her name, but he gets all the beer he wants.....what a deal!

Moses   April 18th, 2008 12:00 pm ET

Uhh..someone please let the republicans know that know one cares about Mc Cain's or bush's tax results mind you...Once the democrats deside who will be on the top of the ticket, we will combine our efforts and pounce on McCain hench forth.

Uncle Sam   April 18th, 2008 12:00 pm ET

On an unrelated but significant matter: "A growing number of our European allies, such as France, Germany, and Italy, have recently voted in more conservative leaders due to their economic concerns and look forward to a McCain presidency."

I guess McCain-Cindy union proves that beautiful women don't always go for older men with more money than them, sometimes they go for older men with more power and fame.

Donald Johnson   April 18th, 2008 11:59 am ET

How the hell can someone who makes as much money as he does be able to receive such a large amount of Social Security while others starve to death because they are getting 95 dollars a month? This just goes to show how elitist he is... and how there needs to be change... we all can believe in...

***AMERICAN***   April 18th, 2008 11:58 am ET

Good for you John, not using your spouse's money to get elected. From one military retiree to another, you are a True American Hero! Thank you!

Stacy Clarks, TX   April 18th, 2008 11:57 am ET

kathleen retired Professional w/woman for obama   April 18th, 2008 11:57 am ET

John McCains Health Care Plan. The employer give you a small
raise and he will not be obligated to pay for your Health Care: Health
Care Payment for your WHOLE FAMILY: YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN!!!
NO MORE BENEFITS, JUST A SMALL RAISE!!!! Yeah! Isn't that great.
Take care of the big company!!!!!!

Stephanopoulus: Tiger, you recently underwent surgery on your left knee. Are you aware that former Weather Underground figure William Ayers also has a left knee?

Woods: Well, no …

Gibson: And Ayers has admitted to golfing.

Woods: Um, I …

Stephanopoulus: Tiger, your father was in the military. Why aren’t you?

Woods: Uh, I …

Gibson: The Reverend Jeremiah Wright. You’ve never denounced his views. Why not?

Woods: Well, I don’t go to …

Stephanopoulus: So you agree with Wright?

Woods: No, But I …

Stephanopoulus: When you line up a big putt at a big tournament, are you hating America like Wright does?

Woods: Am I … putt? What?

Gibson: Where’s your American flag lapel pin, Tiger?

Woods: My what …

Stephanopoulus: You wear red on Sundays. Are you a Marxist?

Woods: Of course I’m …

Gibson: Well, that’s all the time we have. Thanks for watching ABC News, where we give you the full story.

Eric   April 18th, 2008 11:56 am ET

And how much did he give for charitable donations. It better at least be the amount he is getting in social security, he def. doesn't need to have his hand in that cookie jar!

Ken Austin, TX   April 18th, 2008 11:55 am ET

Social Security???? He's worth more than a $100 million (with his wife) and he takes money from an already evaporating social security fund? Sounds borderline immoral to me, but that's just my opinion.

Veterans for Obama   April 18th, 2008 11:55 am ET

Social Security? that's sad.

Voice of Reason   April 18th, 2008 11:55 am ET

Why is he getting Social Security? I know hes older than dirt, but he's employed.

TN   April 18th, 2008 11:55 am ET

Kel from Bham, AL   April 18th, 2008 11:54 am ET
