Clinton's primary campaign begins April in debt

Hillary Clinton began the month with $10 million in debt.
Hillary Clinton began the month with $10 million in debt.

(CNN) – Hillary Clinton began one of the most crucial stretches of her presidential campaign in debt, newly disclosed financial reports show.

According to campaign reports filed with the Federal Election Commission over the weekend, the New York senator began the month of April with close to $32 million cash-on hand. But only $9 million of that total are funds that are able to be spent in the primary races. The report also showed Clinton owes more than $10 million, meaning the Democratic presidential candidate was in the red even before she heavily stepped up television advertising in Pennsylvania.

"The numbers are what they are," Clinton adviser Howard Wolfson said on a conference call with reporters. "The money continues to come in strongly. We had a very good month last month of fundraising…we are continuing to have a good month this month."

We will of course be honoring the debt in the coming weeks and months," he also said.

The newly released reports offer the clearest picture to date of just how much of an advantage Barack Obama holds over Clinton heading into the final stretch of the prolonged Democratic race for the White House.

According to the reports, he began the month with over $42 million to spend during the presidential primaries and only carried around $650,000 in debt. Obama has $52 million cash on hand overall.

As has already been disclosed by both campaigns, Obama more than doubled what Clinton raised in the month of March: $41 million to her $20 million. The Illinois senator's stunning haul brings his presidential fundraising total to date to $235 million - $60 million more than what Clinton has raised in the same time period.

John McCain lagged both Democrats in March fundraising - pulling in $15 million in that time period. He began the month with $11.6 million cash-on-hand and, a debt of just over $700,000. He's raised a total of about $75 million.

The report also shows he gave back nearly $3 million from donors for his general election campaign. This move could indicate he is setting the stage to receive public financing for his campaign - an option that will infuse the Arizona senator with $84 million.

"I am offering leadership [liarship] you can count on. You know where I stand [on falsehoods], you have known what I have done [lied], and you know what I will do [lie more]," the senator from New York said.

There is much more than this:

Hillary Clinton – Sir Edmund Hillary, “So when I was born, she called me Hillary, and she always told me it’s because of Sir Edmund Hillary.” Everest climb did not take place until 1953n.

She said that Chelsea was jogging around the towers of the World Trade Center on 9/11 ... Chelsea wrote an article four months later that said she was home in bed asleep [on 9/11]

She took $1,000 – parlayed it in a matter of weeks on the futures market and then wouldn't release her tax returns, so nobody knew about it until after the statute of limitations was lifted.

She told a federal grand jury that she didn't work on a certain project in the Whitewater scandal, when she did, and she claimed she didn't know it by that name but another name. ...

Her brother was paid $300,000 by a drug and crack cocaine dealer, who was serving a 20 year sentence in prison and her husband pardoned him, and she claimed she had no idea her brother was representing the guy.

She arranged a party for the head of the Orthodox Jewish community in one area, and that district voted for her by 1,400 to three, whereas previously it had been Republican and the leaders of the community walked out of jail shortly after the election.

She was fined $35,000 by the Federal Elections Commission for one of the largest campaign violations on record, claiming that she didn't know that a fundraiser cost $1.2 million instead of $300,000, that enabled her to spend that extra money on her Senate campaign.

It may be a lack of money more than anything else that brings this primary campaign to an end.

Clinton can't even keep her own campaign from running into debt. How is she going to be able to improve this country's economy? How is she going to fund all of those programs for which she's campaigning? It's not going to happen; and even if it does, she'll increase the country's debt substantially to do so. Either that or she'll raise taxes to such a height that no working American will be free from the squeeze. She may claim she's good with a gun, but Clinton's definitely shot herself in the foot with this campaign.

with that kind of money, still Obama can't overtake Hillary? That is truly weak. If winning on tuesday, Hillary is clearly a stronger candidate and a better president.

Open note to George Stephanoplous and Charlie Gibson.

Why no questions about Paul vs. Clinton?????

It will be fascinating to see whether the [largely unpolled] younger registrants in PA manage to hand HRC a defeat tomorrow. Perhaps that's wishful thinking - but ... hmmm ... wouldn't that be something.

Note to HRC. It's time to sing.

In my most humble opinion, any person running for the Office of the President of the United States should exhibit the abilities to exercise stewardship over her or her campaign funds and resources. It appears as though Hillary is running in the red. If her campaign is running in the red, then how can she effectively exercise good stewardship over our country's resources? For the record, my choice of a good candidate is not running in this year’s election, but ran in the 1992 election.

In the last debate Hillary Clinton on two occasions Hillary Clinton was soliciting donations, telling people to go to Hillary Clinton.com. Why would someone who make less than 109 million give a donation to her campaign. She should use some of her own money. Hey, if she don't think her attempted nomination is worth it, neither do I.

If this is the way that Hillary runs her campaign, I'd hate to see what further damage she'd do to our economy.

And just imagine what Obama would do!

    Dear Dan,
Please tell me who these billionaires are so I can get some money also. What a silly, uninformed thing to say. Apparently, you have not been to Senator Obama's website. How about an open mind and find out the true facts.

I support Obama for President. He can manage a campaign and has made history with its viability , he can manage the country. Bush managed the largest state in the union and has failed at managing the US. Hillary is in debt and keeps spending,–sound like Bush?

I hope Hillary has a hell of an education plan...her supporters need spelling, reading comprehension and math help.

The word is "lose" not "loose;" Obama has $650K of debt, total...he has $52 million cash on hand WITH the $650K of debt accounted for...

I am cringing as I hold my degree from a Pennsylvania university...

I can hardly wait for the primary to be over. The democrats are acting like little kids and our politians are affraid to make needed comments. How about; we live in america best nation on the globe so we are going to have a flat tax of 5% no write offs except maybe prove $1000 to a non-profit like church or american cancer soc. Gas prices well open up reserves easy fix. Global warming? what a bunch of well you know. Lets not make government and politics so hard.
