(CNN) – Hillary Clinton began one of the most crucial stretches of her presidential campaign in debt, newly disclosed financial reports show.
According to campaign reports filed with the Federal Election Commission over the weekend, the New York senator began the month of April with close to $32 million cash-on hand. But only $9 million of that total are funds that are able to be spent in the primary races. The report also showed Clinton owes more than $10 million, meaning the Democratic presidential candidate was in the red even before she heavily stepped up television advertising in Pennsylvania.
"The numbers are what they are," Clinton adviser Howard Wolfson said on a conference call with reporters. "The money continues to come in strongly. We had a very good month last month of fundraising…we are continuing to have a good month this month."
We will of course be honoring the debt in the coming weeks and months," he also said.
The newly released reports offer the clearest picture to date of just how much of an advantage Barack Obama holds over Clinton heading into the final stretch of the prolonged Democratic race for the White House.
According to the reports, he began the month with over $42 million to spend during the presidential primaries and only carried around $650,000 in debt. Obama has $52 million cash on hand overall.
As has already been disclosed by both campaigns, Obama more than doubled what Clinton raised in the month of March: $41 million to her $20 million. The Illinois senator's stunning haul brings his presidential fundraising total to date to $235 million - $60 million more than what Clinton has raised in the same time period.
John McCain lagged both Democrats in March fundraising - pulling in $15 million in that time period. He began the month with $11.6 million cash-on-hand and, a debt of just over $700,000. He's raised a total of about $75 million.
The report also shows he gave back nearly $3 million from donors for his general election campaign. This move could indicate he is setting the stage to receive public financing for his campaign - an option that will infuse the Arizona senator with $84 million.

Ding dong the witch is broke the with is broke the wicked witch is broke !
PA voters..........if she can't manage her own campaign how is she possibly going to manage the country???????
JCL from Kentucky – Please re-read the article and then we will give you the opportunity to recind your remarks. You oviously haven't a clue what the article said. You are so far off the mark!
Okay, something sounds fishy. First she tells lies and now she is in debt! WOW!!! One would have to be deaf, dumb and blind to continue voting for this person!!
We need change and as she has shown, she can't provide that! The Clinton days are over!!!!!
Check out youtube videos on HILLARY that she doesn't want anyone to see. If all PA voters saw them her vote would be well under 20%.
Governor Rendell praising Farraqhan.
HILLARY being sued by Peter Paul and her corruption and campaign fraud related to Cher and Peter Paul.
hillary_the_movie.avi tells all.
Hillary encouraging outsourcing of jobs to India.
Many others. Do your homework people.
JCL, Kentucky, The funny thing about your post is you forgot to mention that Senator Obama has 42 MILLION on hand for the primaries. Take away the 650K in "debt" and you will see he has 41+ MILLION on hand for the primary.
I can tell why you like Clinton so much, with your "mis-statements" in your post, honesty is clearly not in your vocabulary.
This is not good !
How can you run a country when you cannot manage your debt.
Not to worry Hillary? All you have to do is convince Barack "Bundler" Obama, who "DOES NOT ACCEPT PAC MONEY," to share his endless haul from MOVEON.ORG, the largest PAC organization in the country! Yet another whopper to add to all the others he's told throughout the campaign.
A woman just won a big NASCAR race in Japan–It's time for a woman to win BIG in Pennsylvania to stay in the Presidential race.
Its a wonderful day for voting for a new day! Good luck to both candidates. I trust Hillary will show her obvious intellect and grasp of the issues from here on out and leave the kitchen sink at home
Obama's money is coming in from Saudi Arabia via the network set up precisly for this election.
Those that would have us go up in smoke are funding Obama's election under the guise that it's coming from small donations nation wide...NOT TRUE!
If this unpatriotic upstart gets the democratic nomination you might as well start getting used to being called the United States of Saudi Arabia!
VOTE CLINTON OR MCCAIN 2008!
C'mon, Penn. Give this fiscal nincompoop the boot before she drags the economy even farther down the hole...vote Obama.
Yes, I've already said some things which have not yet been posted. Are you prejudiced against anyone defending Rev. Wright?
Hillary cannot mange her campaign; how in the world is she going to manage the economy? Much is given, much is required. I hope there is an upset in PA and Obama wins all!!!
Well, is alright. Once Hillary wins the nomination, I'm sure my boy will hook her up with some dough.........actually, technically, is not him, is his peeps, LOL!!!
=====How a true American would vote for another liar in the W.H?===
Great choice for the Presidency! Looks like she needs to fix the deficit in her campaign before she can work on the U.S. Economy.
This is probably one of the biggest reasons to vote for Obama. Here is why:
1. The general election will be determined, in part, by campaign funds. Clinton can't argue that she is more electable when she can't raise and ration her funds and he can.
2. The president will take over the country in a time of great economic peril. If Clinton can't even keep her own campaign in the black, she can't possibly fix our economy. On the other hand, Obama knows who to surround himself with to keep things where they should be.
What happened in america? Did they clone one dork and that idiot was an Obama groupie?
I sure don't want Obama in the White House, and you want to know one reason why, other than I think he is a phoney, and incapable of leading a Diary Queen, much less the country?
It is also because I despise the arrogance, stupidity of the lemming call of the Obama supporters. Almost every message on the board here from an Obama supporter says the same thing;
"If Clinton can't manage her money in her campaign then how can she manage the country?"
I'll tell you how; Obama has made a greater amount of money and Clinton is forced to attempt to match the ads on radio and t.v. and everything that is involved in his 3 to 1 money spent in every state that they have campaigned in. This does not mean she can't manage a campaign, this means that there are a whole lot of lemmings who are giving to the Obama campaign, and if you remember Obama people (who read and reflect little about reality) Bush was elected two times by people just like you. This campaign finance means nothing about the credibility of Hillary's ability to be the President of the United States.
I'll continue supporting her if she has to wear a burlap dress to the nomination.
This is just further proof that you can't trust her economically.
She has exaggerated her experience in every other facet of potential Presidential leadership.
As a person, she's been a manipulator and a conniver since her early political days. She doesn't even possess individual merit!
Come on, wake up!
Anyone but Hillary in 2008!
I can understand clinton and mccain maybe being in debt, but it blew my mind to see obama is jees
"Win at all costs" suddenly has a whole new meaning, doesn't it?
Paul you are a fool and need to stop listening to Rush and Savage because as you will some day figure out they lie to you just like Hillary. Some day, if you have enough intelligence you will figure this out and feel very dumb. The states that Obama lost that you speak of were for a good reason. People fell for the lies put forth by the Clinton campaign and voted based on a knee jerk reaction. If you held those primaries after the news of the lies about NAFTA came out the results would have been very different. This is just another round of last minute lies to the people of Pennsylvania and we will see if they too fall for it. Either way, those states you talk about would vote overwhelmingly for McCain if Hillary was the nominee because her words come back to bite her after the lies hit the ground.
