 McCain campaigned in Selma Monday.
McCain campaigned in Selma Monday.

(CNN) – John McCain launched a tour designed to appeal to moderate voters Monday at the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, a landmark of the civil rights movement.

"There must be no forgotten places in America, whether they have been ignored for long years by the sins of indifference and injustice, or have been left behind as the world grew smaller and more economically interdependent," said the presumptive Republican nominee.

The trip will take McCain to areas far from the standard GOP campaign trail, including hurricane-ravaged New Orleans, the Appalachian region of Kentucky, blue-collar Youngstown, Ohio.

Several weeks ago, the Arizona senator drew boos at his address in honor of Martin Luther King’s birthday from protestors angry over his long-ago vote opposing a federal holiday in honor of the slain civil rights leader. He has since said that decision was a mistake.

The tour’s inaugural event may have shown how long the journey may still be for the Republican senator: in a state where nearly half the voters are African-American, and in a city where 7 in 10 residents are, there were few black faces in the audience Monday.

Asked about their absence, McCain acknowledged the challenge ahead. "I have had long and varied experience with people from all communities and all ethnic backgrounds in America, and I will continue to work," he said. "And I'm aware of the challenges, and aware of the fact that there will be many people who will not vote for me.

"But I'm going to be the president for all the people, and I will work for all the people and I will listen to all the people whether they decide to vote for me or not."

The Selma appearance was intended to send a new signal of unity. McCain praised Georgia Rep. John Lewis, who was beaten by Selma police in the famous 1965 march in that city.

Lewis is an Obama supporter. His congressional office said Monday he had not seen McCain's speech.

"John Lewis took the first blow, a baton thrust to the stomach that shoved him back on the marchers behind him. He took the second blow, too, a hard swung club to his head, leaving a permanent scar where it struck," said McCain, who used the congressman’s example to make the case that Americans can overcome any obstacle.

Too late to play on the heart strings of those "down-trodden poor old people in Selma". Your song is out of tune, a day late and a dollar short.

kshn   April 21st, 2008 4:54 pm ET

Don't get me wrong, Dr, MLK has done some good but who cares if he gets a " MLK day" is that the best way to represent his good deeds? PLease people get over yourselves and understand that Dr. King is to humble a man to accept an entire day in honor of him. Just remember him every day of your life and that would be far better than 1 day, 24 hours,1400 mints. please...people get over it!

Ian   April 21st, 2008 4:53 pm ET

Nice try with the spam. "If Hillary doesn't win the nomination I'm going to vote for McCain". "If Obama doesn't win the nomination I'm going to vote for McCain". Sounds awfully repetitive and similar to the Ron Paul spammers saying that he "Cured their apathy." I for one am not buying into McCain.

Wayne   April 21st, 2008 4:32 pm ET

Hillary has done more to advance the candidacy of McCain than any republican ever could. She has declared him a better Commander in Chief than Obama (who will beat her in the primaries), and she has successfully ebbed the wave of "Obamamania," a feat which McCain does not possess the charisma nor personal magnetism, nor connection with his fellow republicans to have been able to accomplish. In her selfish, "me first and forget everyone else" campaign she will both lose the race to become the democratic front runner, and has jeopardized her party's chances to win. Way to go Hillary, way to go!!!

dosomeresearch   April 21st, 2008 4:30 pm ET

All of you saying Mccain is a racist b/c he voted against the Martin Luther King Jr day in 1986 and is now only saying it was a mistake because he is running for President need to do a little research. It's easy to think you know a candidate based on the little snippets CNN post son their blog. McCain sponsored legislation in 1992 that would create a holiday in AZ for Martin Luther King. He crossed party lines to do it (he does have that history you know) and ultimately it was successful. He made up for his mistake 16 years before his Presidential run.

Vote for whomever you think will best serve this country but do try and find out the facts before slamming someone...

"Will never be my president."
This is the kind of sentiment that makes me sick of Democrats. It's one reason Bush has been unsuccessful. Refusal of Democrats to accept him as president, and undermining everything he tries to do. Now that's unpatriotic.

I will not vote for Clinton or Obama, but if one them them becomes president, they will have my loyalty and I will support them. I may not agree with every policy, and I will probably support legislators that will oppose some of what they want to do, but especially in foreign policy matters I will be behind them 100%. To do otherwise is treason in my opinion.

Smokey   April 21st, 2008 4:05 pm ET

All you Socialists out there should vote for Obama. If you're an American, vote for McCain.

MD   April 21st, 2008 4:03 pm ET

Hillary Clinton has fooled a lot of people, just Bush fooled a lot of people. If the Democratic Part is stupid enough to nominate her, they will be shut out of the White House again.

The Clintons will say anything and do anything to repeat the Bushes success in forming an American dynasty.

Craig   April 21st, 2008 4:02 pm ET

I sure hope Alfredo is not hispanic or liket that. I sure hope that he and the rest of the Latino community does not fall for the pandering the some blacks fall for Hilary's garbage. Later on this summer McCain is going to brush up on his spanish just as Bush did last election.

Any democrat that will not support Obama is proberbly a racist. I don't like the tactics that the Clinton's are using but if she is the nominee I will support her for the good of the party. Anybody but a neo-con. All you wishy-washy democrats outhere who are going to vote for McCain because of Obama are not Democrats and easily led.

Independent-woman-voter-for-Obama   April 21st, 2008 4:00 pm ET

Donated to McCain in 2000; voted for Bush, and regret it to this day! And now McCain is at it again.

The Republicans and ALL the hate-mongers (Rush, Reagan, Hannity, Savage, OReilly, FOX News, etc.) who support them lost me and our family with their FEAR and HATE mongering! Can't believe people still listen to them! Are people stupid?

Poor McCain, he is not a bad guy..... but he is clueless just like the rest of the RNC. Can't wait for November when the RNC will be faced with their own destruction.... thanks to Bush.

CNN: I think you need new moderators. The bias representative of the Comment posts you sanction are stunning. This is the best a major media organization can do at promoting a national dialogue on the next president of the United States? Let's place the shame where it belongs: ON THE MEDIA. These comment sections are riddled with rants, slanders, and slurs, which appear to come mostly from Obama supporters. If these are the kinds of folks he attracts, he will not get my vote. The hypocrisy is amazing! (Let's see if the moderators post this one. If they don't, my suspicions will be confirmed).

I AM VOTING FOR OBAMA TOMORROW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Praetorian, Fort Myers   April 21st, 2008 3:46 pm ET

There is a big difference between McCain and the other two candidates. It can be seen right here on this blog.

McCain is running as what he is-

He's not trying to cater to every segment of the population–but he is trying to "reachout" to every segment of the population–that is the difference and a very big difference.

His values/ideals/ and goals for our country don't change with the political winds.

Zach   April 21st, 2008 3:45 pm ET

McCain is the only one with the experience and knowledge to lead this country. Period. Hillary and Obama together don't even come close to matching his time in service on any level. Good luck Senetor McCain

Make My Day   April 21st, 2008 3:41 pm ET

Let PA vote themselves deeper into a hole. My sons are not going to this stupid war so let all the sons of PA go and die for some people that don't give a HOOT about them. 100yrs sounds good to me and if Hillary wins this thing and Obama is voted out I will vote for Mc Same and help give them the 100yrs of hell that they love so much. Obama may be too good of a man to be in charge of this government for them. Go ahead PA make my day. Talk about Cali. all you want but I have never been without a job. You better load up the truck Jethro. No, on the other hand stay there and wait for your jobs to come back, Hillary and McSame has a plan for you. Any of you want to buy the Golden Gate Bridge? Hillary will sell it to you very cheap?
Make my day

Can you say-- PANDERING ?????

Jack K, Fort Myers   April 21st, 2008 3:28 pm ET

Who says "all of a sudden"?
He's certainly visited the untouched areas of Arizona.
This being his first national election–why would he have campaigned and stumped in Alabama–or any of the dozens of locales on his agenda.

As far as his record goes–he's always demonstrated concern for all Americans and worked for a fair and level playing field.

Crispus   April 21st, 2008 3:22 pm ET

This is the problem with GOP party they ignore Americans who have different opinions from them and need to remind themselves by making a special trip to show they are not biased.

Crispus   April 21st, 2008 3:17 pm ET

All of the HRC supporters that are considering a vote for J McCain against Obama should know what he is going to do to you IF he wins the GE:
1) Help outsource your job to another country(China, India, Mexico, etc..)
2) Because of #1…you will loose your home…
3) Send your kids…sometime in the future…to Iraq or Iran to fight.
think about it…

NEITHER OBAMA OR MCCAIN HAS HAD 8 YEARS OF LIVING IN THE WHITE HOUSE AND MET AND TALKED TO WORLD LEADERS LIKE HILLARY WHO HAS LOTS OF EXPERIENCE IN THIS AREA.
DIPLOMACY OF THE HIGHEST LEVEL IS AT THE WHITE HOUSE
WHERE THERE IS NO SECOND GUESSING AND TALKS ARE CARRIED ON IN SECRET AND ARE BINDING.
I JUST DO NOT AGREE WITH OBAMA HAVING DIRECT TALKS WITH AND GOING TO IRAN WHO IS AN AVOWED ENEMY OF ISRAEL AND
WITH AN UNRELENTING CONTEMPT OF THE U.N. IN CONTINUING ITS NUCLEAR WEAPONS PROGRAM.

MC, Maryland   April 21st, 2008 2:38 pm ET

McCain is going to say and do anything to get the Repiblicans back in the White House. He is going to give Barack a run for his money and unfortunately most people are going to fall for it "hook, line and sinker".

I guarantee you by the time the General Election rolls around, he will be promising to bring the troops home in some form or another. Watch.

MOBILE251   April 21st, 2008 2:35 pm ET

I think he is crazy for trying something like this, the only reason he spoke at MLK day was for the media. He has never talked about bringing people togather just the dem and rep party. He would have never came to the bridge if it wasnt for the media. Lets be real he is feeding us with a long spoon. He dont want goverment health care but he has had it all his life. He didnt want Mlk day or a raise in min. wage.

He can stand on whatever bridge he wants to, but it doesn't change the fact that he and his party are the party of limited civil rights, more government intrusion into individual rights, more government spending, and bigger national debts. And those are his 'positives'.
One of his biggest 'negatives' is that he and his party will try to convince you otherwise, which makes him a dangerous LIAR.

You seem like a great guy with a fantastic personality. And having a president for just 1term is really appealing to me too. Oh, and you should get Romney to be your vp or a woman candidate and that would make me really happy.

Hillary-McCain '08

Shame on you   April 21st, 2008 1:00 pm ET

You have got to be kidding. He does'nt even seem the least bit sincere. What is wrong with you people have you know brain. Seriously somethings is wrong with this country if you think this shribbled old geaser is worth even looking at , for real don't be retards for ever. This guy is so fake , it's leaking from his underarms and mistaken for sweat.

Bruce, Harpers Ferry, WV   April 21st, 2008 12:57 pm ET

Yes, let's not vote for the man who went through so many hardships while he was a POW in YOUR war. You are disgusting.

Veterans for Obama   April 21st, 2008 12:56 pm ET

Not a hero in my book!

MD   April 21st, 2008 12:54 pm ET

Well at least McCane knows the decisions he makes are all mistakes. Isn't it sad that we allow individuals who have betrayed us on a smaller scale (in the Senate) to run for the highest office of the Land?

McCane is called McSame and McBush, but I don't think the man has any direction at all. What scares me about McCane is the same thing that scares me about Clinton: They both say and do anything to get elected.

Veterans Against McCain   April 21st, 2008 12:51 pm ET

Mc Cain is not fit to be president. To see why go to our website: vietnam veterans against john mccain.

Peter in PA   April 21st, 2008 12:50 pm ET

Get back to the nurshing home you old man!

Gorbashov, Long Beach, Ca.   April 21st, 2008 12:50 pm ET

Puh-lease! He doesn't understand the average working man/woman anymore than he supports policies that would benefit them.

A vote for McSame is a vote for four more years of the same failed policies of the Cheney/Bush mafia!

Democratic in 2008!

Yes, we can.....take our conutry back!

blue   April 21st, 2008 12:49 pm ET

John, sorry, they keep bumping you down so they can try to lie and smear Hillary more with an outdated report. They want to keep that on the front page, so you were pushed down.

... Don't worry though, after tomorrow's win for Hillary, she will be the nominee and you will start getting more equal time.

James   April 21st, 2008 12:49 pm ET

Your'e a little late. The March was in the '60.

Tiffany   April 21st, 2008 12:48 pm ET

Is this guy kidding? He voted against a Dr, King holiday – what kind of person but a bigot would do that? I guess he thought the fight against racism, sexism and oppression isn't something worthy of acknowledging!

Who is he trying to reach out to? He is the biggest flip-flopper yet.

Michael Lorton, Virginia   April 21st, 2008 12:47 pm ET

McCain has come to realize that finishing second in the Olympics gets you silver; Finishing second in politics gets you oblivion. He is going to have to shake a lot of hands to make up the difference.

SayNoToHillaryBillaryCheslary   April 21st, 2008 12:45 pm ET

Too late Mccain No African American person will the right mind will vote Republican except a few idiots. Republican so called Conservative which I call false Christians are the most racist people in face of this planet.

Randy - Denver   April 21st, 2008 12:44 pm ET

And while Ms. Clinton continues her failed comapign forcing Mr. obama to fight on two fronts Mr. mcCain is getting a quiet period to strengthen his campaing without any real scrutiny.. THANKS HILLARY No wonder why the most conservative paper in PA supports you! You are handing the race to Mr. McCain because you cannot do the math that shows unless you win by over 40% in all remaining states you will not beat Mr. Obama in pledged delegates (which we understand you think should all change their votes to you) nor the popular vote and that the only way you can win is by backroom deals with the Superdelegates...

Bridgette   April 21st, 2008 12:42 pm ET

As a United States senator how could you have just gotten around to visiting hurricane Katrina victims. How is that possible. I know they tried to make that a race thing but it really wasn't. There were just as many white people hurt by that as black people, but, for some reason they only want to show black people when they talk about hurricane katrina.

I think it is a shame to try and use that as a political stand. It is so many people that are just homeless after that and still waiting for someone to give them some help. That should not be what you want to use for a political plat form.

Danh nguyen   April 21st, 2008 12:41 pm ET

He now needs votes. That's why he said It was a mistake. Vote Halliary or Barack , we will have a better life, because the Democrats truly care for all those who live in this great nation, The USA...

Jan   April 21st, 2008 12:39 pm ET

McFlip has made a lot of mistakes and continues to talk out of both sides of his mouth. A Republican heading to New Orleans to mouth platitudes about "fixing" their problems. Too little, too late, too obvious.

Joe Green   April 21st, 2008 12:36 pm ET

Hello John McCain! Moderate Voter Here! Waiting for your "outreach!"

Does this "outreach" include comparing Obama to Hamas? If so, you lost me big time.

I supported your campaigns in the past, financially. No more.

Fire your Carville-clone or whoever is doing this idiotic "attack dog" stuff.

Are you blind as well as deaf? Can't you see that is what is TANKING Hillary?

Now your campaign is tanking as well. Sheesh! You HAD it man!

And you BLEW it!

Sue   April 21st, 2008 12:35 pm ET

Quote: "There must be no forgotten places in America, whether they have been ignored for long years by the sins of indifference and injustice, or have been left behind as the world grew smaller and more economically interdependent," said the presumptive Republican nominee. Wasn't he part of that indifference for goodness sake? He speaks as though he was not in Washington for the last few decades. Typical pol.

ABC   April 21st, 2008 12:35 pm ET

The future of this nation depends on the character and wisdom of our next president, Thus this is the most important factor to evaluate a candidate. Any person who is not wise enough to understand that our nation has deteriorated in the past few years because of the Iraq war does not deserve to be our next president.

McCain is an honorable veteran and respected senator. However, he is too stubborn and too committed to the Iraq (or may-be Iran) war. Obama is an inspiring speaker to some, but slippery and without substance to others. He is the most unknown among the three candidates in this area. Yet, we have already known many things that can handicap him in the general election and in the presidency: for example, his dealings with the indicted Chicago land dealer; his relationship with Rev Wright.; his wife’s stand on races and America; and his smoking and drug history. On the other hand, Hillary has been in the public light for more than 30 years. She has built some resistance from the public, particularly from the media. However, she is an optimistic person with a resilient strength to overcome difficulties

Carlo   April 21st, 2008 12:35 pm ET

Don't even go there McCain. You remember those places now? You've been a Senator for over twenty years. You couldn't have squeezed them in by now? Pandering, pandering...

Coloradan   April 21st, 2008 12:35 pm ET

McBush,

Reaching out to the right-wing nutters, grannies and weak minded.

I can't wait until there's a debate between Obama and McCain. Barack will serve point-by-point blows to that FLAWED McBush.

Clinton is over, Bush is over, it's really time to Move On.

Ian   April 21st, 2008 12:34 pm ET

Listening and acting upon are two completely different things. Please listen closely to his words. He hears our cries to bring our troops home, yet blatantly states his opposition to this. This is not a man for the people.

Neil K, Lake Forest CA   April 21st, 2008 12:34 pm ET

No forgotten places? What about New Orleans, Senator McCain? Any thoughts of your own on that, or are you going to continue to show the indifference the current administration has?

Tim from Buffalo   April 21st, 2008 12:33 pm ET

Obviously McCain doesn't think he's going to make inroads with black voters. The only reason I can think of that would support him doing this is that his campaign must feel that some of Obama's success is rooted in "white guilt" and he has to position himself in such a way as to give white people a way to vote for him in spite of that. Even that seems like a bit of a stretch – but if not that what is he doing?

Chris, Denver CO   April 21st, 2008 12:32 pm ET

nice try, McKlan. Nobody's buying it.

Lisa   April 21st, 2008 12:32 pm ET

He has no right to be anywhere near that bridge or anything it represents! Your vote against MLK day was certainly a mistake, as are you, you crazy, war loving, old, old, man.

Richard   April 21st, 2008 12:30 pm ET

At least he admitted he did a misstake. Obama has still admitted his misstake with Rev. Wright and appologized to PA people. McCain comes across far more honest and humble than Obama
