Obama has said electing McCain would mean a third Bush term.

READING, Pennsylvania (CNN) –
Democrat Barack Obama conceded Sunday that all three leading presidential contenders would be better than President Bush — including Republican opponent John McCain.

"Either Democrat would be better than John McCain," he said. "And all three of us would be better than George Bush."

In the past, Obama has equated a McCain presidency to a "third Bush term."

But, people, don’t forget you elected Bush as president. Did you say that you made same mistake twice in a row? If so, don’t make the same mistake three times in a row. Get someone with low risk.

It's amazing to me that Obama generates all this controversy simply for being honest. Apparently we expect a lot less of our politicians.

A 5th grader would be better than Dubya as President. Whinning Hillary supporters! Obama said Dems first then McCain. Your candidate Hillary said McCain would be a better Commander in Chief (ie President) than Obama. Where the hell is her loyalties. It sure isn't with the Democrats.

Allen Vincent   April 21st, 2008 11:06 am ET

His comment shows that the Dems are trying to throw the election,
and cause the Republicans to win the White House in November.

None of the Candidates in either party would be a better president.
They're all the same and are bought and paid for by the corporations.
Why would should we waste our vote on these crooks, when we need
some honesty and Integrity in the White House.

Yes, OBamma offers change.

But change to WHAT????

All that he ever offers is an empty promise of hope and change.

But until I know what he wants to change, he will not get my vote because it may affect me negatively..

Change for changes sake is NEVER good.

What exactly kind of CHANGE Sen. Obama want? I work at a Community Health Center and the government (state and federal level) already offers different kinds of health insurance for children.

One of the problem also is that some people choose to keep money instead of buying their families medical insurance. I know a lot of people like that. They don't know their priorities. People will survive without expensive material things but that's their prerogative.

Frankly, I'm sick and tired of hearing all this stupid things going on. Medicare is planning on cutting reimbursement again! A lot of doctors now are not accepting new patients on Medicare and Medicaid. People don't understand their medical benefits. Sen. Obama's health care program is DUMP AND STUPID. Jon Peirce   April 21st, 2008 10:14 am ET

Yes, Obama is probably right. McCain is an improvement in some ways over Bush. He recognizes the problems with global warming, does not support torture, and would support some forms of campaign finance reform.

But McCain is far from being good enough. He is a superhawk on Iraq, totally ignorant on economic matters, and on most social issues in thrall to the fundamentalist moral majority. To say he is better than Bush is like saying that a term paper that receives a grade of 30% is better than one that receives a grade of 20%. The former is better than the latter, but neither is close to being good enough.

I'm surprised at how big of a deal everyone is making out of this. McCain might be a better president than bush by a narrow margin (agreeing with the fact that a monkey would be better than Bush), but do we really need any more years of Republican dictatorship? Just because Obama admitted that McCain would be better than Bush (which was meant as a joke), doesn’t automatically qualify McCain as the best choice.

Wake up and vote for Obama in 2008!

I'm sick of this drama in the campaign, I don't want more in the white house. There's a reason why the delegates and superdelegates are
changing their support to Obama. THis thing goes way beyond the primaries. THey know they'll have to deal with this in the white house.
And McCain will tare her apart. These are the delegates and endorsers that have left her.

Obama is correct in acknowledging that McCain is an honorable man and definitely better than "W". Senator Obama should not have to remind us that "W" Bush has messed up everything so badly that any of the candidates could do a better job. Obama's bottom line is that both democrat nominees are up to the task of beating McCain and are the better choice for president. Leave it to the Clinton spin doctors to make a mountain out of a mole hill; they are truly professionals at that. Arise Pennsylvanians and unite for Senator Obama as president! What is the big news? ANYBODY including Mickey Mouse would be better that Bush. George Bush has been the worst President in history and has destroyed this country and turned it upside down. My 12yr old could have run this country better than "Jr. Shrub". I have switched from Clinton, she is too negative and it is sad because I have always admired the Clintons and have defended them through the years. She has revealed her true self which is a liar , deceiver, cold & calculating and will DO & SAY anything to get elected. We don't need anymore of this foolishness in our leadership. I vote for a fresh start and clean slate and will go with OBAMA for a real change of direction in this nation.

One person says Obama needs presidential experience in order to get his vote for president…i don't know how one gains presidential expereince without being president, nor can one be president without being elected…another says Obama is a "hipocrit"…another ingenious remark from our capable citizens…And every woman in America thinks Hillary is the best but has no idea why other than the fact that she is a woman. You wanna fight for equal employment, military participation, and non-discrimination, yet want to use her husband's 8 years as president as her experience. This is unfair, as it only lets her ride Bill's coat-tails forever. I don't know how she became Senator here, i've never met a supporter. Politics is all a matter of personal opinion, and it would be great to have a female president, but not Hillary Clinton, you must find a capable woman, not just the first one with enough money to run.

Charlie   April 21st, 2008 9:38 am ET

Once again out of context. Shame on you CNN. These writers only read headlines! They are lazy and anxious to jump on every little reason to support their choice . He was making a remark about how bad Bush is not how good McCain is. Cracking wise as it were.
Which brings me to my next rant:
Any attempt to keep things civil falls on deaf ears.
Keep this in mind people. The new voters who are really taking an interest in an election for the first time in years are mainly young people.
It is their turn. The simple truth is these new voters who are for Obama mostly will simply give up and not show on election day if their candidate is robbed of the nomination by ancient political predjudices. All of us true Democrats understand their importance in this election.
Obama speaks to and for them. Turn your back on them and you will continue to be ruled by the GOP. The young people are the ones who will die on the battlefields.

I'm glad to hear that you've found a time machine/alternate universe transporter to go into some alternate futures where Hillary and McCain have both been president before to find out how well they did.

AJ, IL   April 21st, 2008 9:38 am ET

As distracting as this ticker is about talking about Obama's comment. What is more important is the financial picture of the campaigns. Obama began April with $42 million in cash and with less than $1 million in debt. Hillary began April with $8 million in cash and $10 million in debt.

This makes me want to go give Obama another $50. Come on Americans it is time to start rallying around Obama.

Sara   April 21st, 2008 9:37 am ET

Ummmmm – just how dim are the bulbs in this country?
I caught the remarks live, and they were part of a closing statement where Obama merely said that all three of the candidates were of sufficient quality to be running on Tues.
There was NO value judgement of support of anyone, but simply "Vote on Tues., all of us are competent enough to be on the ballot, I would like you to vote for me."
Completely normal, polite political campaign closing – now why have over 400 people used this comment to spin their own webs of fantasy and worse?????

Moroever, when i listen to this statement, I see the reason some voters are offended but I also see a reasoning to this statement. He said "so it’s not surprising then that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations". This is just an example of how the media (FOX NEWS & others) exactly makes a caricature of his words. This was cut out of context, they repeatedly display a part of his statement without allowing voters to get a full understanding of his words and character. As a 12th grade student that I am (held back one year now), and hope to someday enter this political world, I hope this political game does not remain like this, filled with all this sorts of dirty games.

yu kayode   April 21st, 2008 9:34 am ET

Its not suprising for me to see that Sen. Hillary Clinton has focused on Sen. Obama statement and that she has tried to make it a major controversial issue for voters. I personally think its just her other way of continuing her negative campaign against her fellow democrat, who at the end of this election, she is going to refer as an awesome politician (probabily suggest that he's a very good friend & that she wished they were on the same ticket for the run for the white house). I think she just keeps showing her desperation to run the country for another 8 yrs, and is hoping that if she cant make it to this national election, she wants to win it the next time and Sen. McCain is likely to only run for only a first-term which would be in her best bet.

Yea, I would like Sen. Obama to explain that one. Well, I guess he's not George Bushes third term afterall.

Why are people (especially Hillary people) so afraid to hear the TRUTH? There's no way to top Bush without another Bush. McCain is BETTER, but he's still a cookie cutter slave to the Neocons.

To Key West Sun   April 21st, 2008 9:02 am ET

Anyone would be better than Bush.

Obama also said "Either Democrat would be better than John McCain". Again, this is being taken out of context!!!

When a majority of historians believe that we have all lived through the first failed presidency, then it's only obvious that any candidate is better then Bush.

Independent In MD   April 21st, 2008 8:02 am ET

Is this Obama's way of telling his backers that if he doesn't get the nomination they are to vote for McCain the way he told people in Michigan to vote "undecided" after he removed his name from the ballot?

Yankee Air Pirate   April 21st, 2008 7:59 am ET

It's a true statement. McCain would not be the divider that Bush was/is. He would not unite the way Obama will but he would be an improvement–I would say better then HRC.

Lauren   April 21st, 2008 7:14 am ET

Let's be realistic, McCain IS better then Bush. Clinton can criticize Obama if she likes; but wasn't it she who said McCain was better than Obama?

PJ, New York Independent   April 21st, 2008 7:11 am ET

Until Obama served a couple terms as president it would be hard to say if he would be better or worse than George W Bush. Do we really want to find out as a result of the November, 2008 election?

McCain will be bad, Obama will be ineffective, and McCain will be beat Obama in a general election.

What does this tell you? The obvious best choice is Hillary!

McCain has been calling the "Obama Kettle" by its true color — "irresponsibe," so now Obama wants to make a little "nicey-nicey" with McCain — what a hack!

CNN is full of shoddy reporting, as always. The last line of this article is pointless. He was ripping on McCain, believe me. I actually saw this

THAT'S NOT POSSIBLE OBAMA…MCCAIN'T IS THE FLIP SIDE OF BUSH.

I'm so sick of all these little things couting as news. Anyone else agree?

George   April 20th, 2008 7:51 pm ET

This is CNN version of the news. we dont trust CNN anymore. Obama never said that Mccain is a better president and vote for him. it is silly and low. Obama is running for president and how he can say vote for Mccain.

Trish- PA   April 20th, 2008 7:50 pm ET

Senator Obama and Senator McCain would conduct the most distinguished Presidential campaign in memory. That alone is something to ponder.

There are many reasons, however why I will be voting for Obama on Tuesday.

Anonymous   April 20th, 2008 7:32 pm ET

Ron   April 20th, 2008 5:54 pm ET

Wow, what a deduction Obama, my dog would be a better president than Bush.

Kimy   April 20th, 2008 5:53 pm ET

Um NAH! McBush would be just as bad as Bush.

Enrique   April 20th, 2008 5:52 pm ET

What's clear is if HIllary were to run the country like she's run her campaign, this country would be in big trouble. Her campaign has been a disaster.

bk   April 20th, 2008 5:51 pm ET

Thanks for letting us know that. We will definitly vote for McCain if Clinton doesn't win.

Robert Mpls   April 20th, 2008 5:51 pm ET

Well, he might be right…but talk about faint praise.

Tim from PA   April 20th, 2008 5:49 pm ET

However, we need Barack Obama for president. Thank you.

bk   April 20th, 2008 5:48 pm ET

I wonder if Michelle positioned all those white people behind Barack?

Peter   April 20th, 2008 5:47 pm ET

Thank you, Senator Obama. I agree. All three of you would be and no matter what, on January 20, 2009, a heavy burden will be lifted from our country.

Peter S.
Georgia

Jane   April 20th, 2008 5:46 pm ET

I think Senator Obama's judgement about Senator McCain's being better than President Bush reveals his lack of experience.

Penn State   April 20th, 2008 5:46 pm ET

McCain would also be a much better president than you Obama.

HH   April 20th, 2008 5:46 pm ET

Anyone would be better than Bush.

jd   April 20th, 2008 5:44 pm ET

Maybe he would but Senator Obama, you would be better because you bring a NEW spin on all the issues. My whole family is voting for you. We ARE a large family. OBAMA/08

PW   April 20th, 2008 5:44 pm ET

oops, another stupid comment by Obama. I'm voting for Hillary because it does take a Clinton to clean up after a Bush.

Jim   April 20th, 2008 5:44 pm ET

Sure all three would be better than Bush — even McCain. It's a losing argument to argue that McCain would be as bad as Bush since it is impossible to get as incompetent as Bush.

JDR   April 20th, 2008 5:42 pm ET

go away obama

Interesting   April 20th, 2008 5:41 pm ET

that doesn't mean anything. I think my dog could be a better president than Bush.

mark   April 20th, 2008 5:40 pm ET

Now that's honesty! no lie~~~

Ed   April 20th, 2008 5:39 pm ET

Anybody would be better than another Clinton…..

Joshua   April 20th, 2008 5:38 pm ET

Before Bush, I'm sure McCain would have been a better president. Since McCain is likely to continue Bush's policies I couldn't say he was any better anymore.

Dee   April 20th, 2008 5:38 pm ET

Why is this news??
My little sister would be a better president than Bush…

Rob -BC,Canada   April 20th, 2008 5:38 pm ET

Thats not saying a whole lot really.A lawn ornament in a suit would be better than Bush.Sadly, history will remember him as the worst President in the history of your wonderful country.

Ranger7   April 20th, 2008 5:38 pm ET

Bush is definitely .. a taker… not a giver… to the American Citizen…!!!
A man who… will pay dearly for his crimes of Greed!!
Yes ..any president for the next 1000 years will be better than
G Dumbuya Bush…!

rockus   April 20th, 2008 5:36 pm ET

I agree with Obama this time. But Obama has mangled his statement again – he left out that Hillary is the best candidate of the three.

frank   April 20th, 2008 5:35 pm ET

A forthright leader. Welcome to the presidency!

bond_Dallas   April 20th, 2008 5:33 pm ET

Now that, I don't understand. I love Obama but I need clarification on how McCain is better than Bush. He will actually be worse than Bush.

Independent   April 20th, 2008 5:32 pm ET

the BS stops here   April 20th, 2008 5:23 pm ET

It's time for a change in "journalism". What we see on nowadays is akin to what we in supermarket tabloids.

IMHO, being better than Bush is not all that much of a compliment / achievement for any of the candidates.

Jay, IL   April 20th, 2008 5:21 pm ET

Meaning: John, I beg you, please stop attacking me.

Chicago Democrat   April 20th, 2008 5:20 pm ET

Way to be tough on McCain…

fowlowl   April 20th, 2008 5:18 pm ET

How about Jeramiah Wright, Barack?

Zack   April 20th, 2008 5:18 pm ET

nobaba08   April 20th, 2008 5:16 pm ET

sounds like the flip-flopping has begun…

Now for Obama   April 20th, 2008 5:16 pm ET

I don't think anyone can be worse than Bush, so he is totally right.

Bushwhacked   April 20th, 2008 5:15 pm ET

Well there's a stretch. McCain at least has some brains and judgment, which I can't say about the Current Occupant.

Democrats Unite in November!
Eugene, OR

Noah   April 20th, 2008 5:14 pm ET

Todays ARG poll has Clinton up 14 points over Obama..Looks like PA likes Hillary.

Sam Cheney   April 20th, 2008 5:14 pm ET

I think Bush Jr. has been one of Americas finest presidents. People have overlooked the fact that the economy has done outstanding since 9-11

Bob   April 20th, 2008 5:13 pm ET

This is why he's a uniter, not a divider.
Please vote for him!

John   April 20th, 2008 5:13 pm ET

Obama is right. In fact, it's hard to imagine someone who wouldn't be better than Bush of any stripe or party.

D. M.   April 20th, 2008 5:12 pm ET

Pretty scary that he said that. Know need to do any backsliding on past comments. McCain in no way would do better than Bush

ANDROLOMA, Commerce City, Colorado   April 20th, 2008 5:10 pm ET

White, Female Boomer for Obama   April 20th, 2008 5:08 pm ET

Where is John McCain's flag pin? Perhaps he will start to wear one if Barack is the candidate…

christi   April 20th, 2008 5:08 pm ET

Obama is always fair in what he says. And yet the media will spin this as an endorsement for McCain.

God anyone is better than Bush! We hope.

Obama Supporter   April 20th, 2008 5:08 pm ET

Obama wants to end the politics that tear each other down down but to stand for the politics for the country; John McCain will comment this comment as being flip flop. He does not get the new message.

APS in Hawaii   April 20th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

Anyone would be better than Obama. He is just another Bush/Rove in sheepskin clothing. All talk and no substance. Go Hillary!!!

Ken Austin, TX   April 20th, 2008 5:06 pm ET

Remember those words you Clintonites who are threatening to vote Republican if Hillary doesn't win the nomination.

Jen   April 20th, 2008 5:06 pm ET

He is simply telling the truth because he doesn't believe in lying to get elected.

Christain Jax   April 20th, 2008 5:04 pm ET

This is ludacris. Obama just lost my vote. I don't know where he stands. Is he campaigning for John McCain?

Pennsylvania for Obama   April 20th, 2008 5:03 pm ET

Obama is a true peacemaker. He's the only one that cares about America. He is our President. I know the Pope did not endorse anybody, but I think he definitely sent a few hints by emphasizing the message of Hope.

Obama '08

White male for Obama   April 20th, 2008 5:01 pm ET

Grif   April 20th, 2008 5:00 pm ET

Like a Game of Domino's, for the Democrat's… Whether they're 'Back with White Spot's, Or White with Black Spot's….. They can't decide…

carla   April 20th, 2008 4:59 pm ET

It is not saying much that McCain would be better then George Bush because that is not a very high standard to meet. My dog would would be a better president then George Bush.

HILLARY '08

Chipster   April 20th, 2008 4:56 pm ET

Well, duh! A three legged dog would be a better president than Bush! It will take decades to recover from the damage his administration and the Republican congress have done to our nation.

A True black American   April 20th, 2008 4:55 pm ET

Jim, Pa   April 20th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

McBush has no choice to run to the middle, away from George Bush. He will flip flop until the election is over and start have temper tantrum on the Democrats.

No McBush for 08

Clara   April 20th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

Obama is grossly underqualified.

Ignorantbama   April 20th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

Obama should have said that "McCain will be better president than me"

Arjun   April 20th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

I am not sure Obama will make a better president than BUSH. He started out his campaign on lies and deceptiveness and he continues with his pathetic lies, deceptiveness, diviseness and destructiveness. Beside he is more incompetent than Bush.

Peter in Oregon   April 20th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

It's not a surprise. He speaks the truth even when it hurts. His honesty is what would make him the best President of the 3.

Obama '08

Jack in ND   April 20th, 2008 4:45 pm ET

Well, that's better Obama.

Because to say that McCain would just be another Bush term is absurd and alienates a vast number of Independents for whom McCain is their second choice after you, but before Hillary.

Neil K, Lake Forest CA   April 20th, 2008 4:43 pm ET

That's like saying a guy who bats .150 is better than the guy who bats .100. The bar's pretty low for being better than this president. When you're at the bottom, there's nowhere else to go but up.

Worst. President. Ever.

Trollmaster CA   April 20th, 2008 4:41 pm ET

Saying that someone would make a better president than Bush would be like saying someone has a higher IQ than a banana slug.

Joanne   April 20th, 2008 4:41 pm ET

LOL How DESperate can you be LOL

Hipocrit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ross in MD   April 20th, 2008 4:40 pm ET

I think just about anybody would make a better president than Bush. That bar is pretty low.

Ovitshio Branco from Scranton (PA)   April 20th, 2008 4:39 pm ET

God bless America and Irak

Peter   April 20th, 2008 4:38 pm ET

A monkey would be a better president than Bush.

honkey white guy from cali   April 20th, 2008 4:38 pm ET

It is funny He tells the truth! regardless of thought! good for him But we are going to prevent having Mc Cain I can not believe that Hillary supporters would vote for such a bad person just out of spite, that makes no since at all. In the words oh Bill Clinton " Give me a break"!

Go Obama 08 Yes We Can

tomdavie   April 20th, 2008 4:38 pm ET

MISTAKE .

MISTAKE

MISTAKE

Obama himself says Mc Cain is an improvement on Bush

DUMMY DUMMY DUMMY

Ernest   April 20th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

Dumb George Bush who admitted in front of an articulate British Prime Minister that he could not wait after 10 month's to get out of white house.

Has the war crime tribunal in Hague convened on him yet? My dog Rufus will be a better president than him.

Morten Busk   April 20th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

Well point at everyone, and you will have a better president than Bush.
That´s common sense.

John   April 20th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

Obama those are hpothetical postulations! You have a lot of under cooked food on your plate!Concentrate on yourself, and stop a three pronged attack, when you are alone on the ground!

Gary in Toronto   April 20th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

This might be true but nonetheless:

I can only imagine the explosion of silliness that will come out as a result of his saying it.

Ooopsie.

Uncle Sam   April 20th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

Although a back-handed compliment, I applaud Sen. Obama's honest recognition that John McCain is his own man.

John   April 20th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

I glad Obama feels this way because after McCain is elected President they will all have to work together to solve this countries problems.

jp/michigan   April 20th, 2008 4:29 pm ET

I agree with Obama. If Hillary is not the nominee, McCain would be a better President than Obama. With McCain you know what you get. With Obama it's a bag full of tricks.

David, Atlanta, GA   April 20th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

I must say, I agree with him there.

Better than GWB?   April 20th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

My current voting priority order:
1. Hillary
2. McCain
3. Obama

Until Obama served a couple terms as president it would be hard to say if he would be better or worse than George W Bush. Do we really want to find out as a result of the November, 2008 election?

LABOY   April 20th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

ONLY HILLARY & MC CAIN WILL BE BETTER PRESIDENT
NOT YOU OBAMA

Grif   April 20th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

John McCain is His own Man…. That say's enough…. He has taken the Republican's Choice, for a Leader by Storm… He was Saturated with votes… They, new he was their Leader, more or less Unanimously….

Zach   April 20th, 2008 4:24 pm ET

If CNN would watch the entire video, they would see that Barack also said at the same event that John McCain is still offering a 3rd Bush term because his economic and foreign policies are exactly that.

Venus   April 20th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

Go Obama! Bring the Clintons down!

Marie in California   April 20th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

That's about the only thing Obama's said that I agree with!

Clara   April 20th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

What a brainstorm. Anybody would be better than Bush.

Hillary would be better than Obama. He knows it.
