From

(CNN) – Shortly after Barack Obama’s campaign released a memo raising the bar on a Hillary Clinton win by saying her victory in Pennsylvania was a foregone conclusion, her campaign released their own memo accusing their opponents of “attempting to pre-spin” a loss in that state.

“[A]fter the Obama campaign’s ‘go-for-broke’ Pennsylvania strategy, after their avalanche of negative ads, negative mailers and negative attacks against Sen. Clinton, after their record-breaking spending in the state, a fundamental question must be asked: Why shouldn't Sen. OBAMA win?” they wrote in the memo sent to reporters Tuesday afternoon.

Repeating a longtime message, they wrote that a loss in Pennsylvania would raise serious questions about Obama’s ability to beat John McCain. Obama staffers were attempting to raise the bar on a Clinton win “because they know that the race is neck and neck and tonight's contest is a measure of where the campaign stands.”

“The press and the pundits have repeatedly counted Sen. Clinton out and she has repeatedly proved them wrong. The vote in the bellwether state of Pennsylvania is another head to head measure of the two candidates and of the coalition they will put together to compete and win in November.

“No amount of spin from the Obama campaign will change that — nor will it explain away anything less than a victory by Sen. Obama.”

At a Philadelphia campaign stop, Obama himself seemed to partially agree with their view.

“Well, let me cut to the chase. A win is 50 plus one,” he told reporters. “So if Senator Clinton gets over 50 percent she’s won the state and you know I don’t try to pretend that I enjoy getting 45 percent and that’s a moral victory, we’ve lost the state.

He added that at the end of the process, he would have won twice as many states, the popular vote, and the pledged delegate count “and when I hear arguments, well he hasn’t won this state or that state….we feel good about where we are. It’s been an uphill climb here in PA.”

ROFL — wow … I have to say, this if very funny. And I wonder if Americans, in general, are intelligent enought to get it. Obama must be one hell of a chess player … that he can get the opposition to ask the question "why shouldn't he be president" is phenomenal!

Freakin' Hillary jerks don't even get it…. Hahahahaha!!!!

The more I find out about Barack, the more I admire him.

Dustin   April 22nd, 2008 7:41 pm ET

I agree. If Obama can't win Penn. tonight even though he spent three times the money…that sends a huge picture. Obama wants to buy our votes, get us excited with his speeches, yet refuses to debate anymore? Looks like somebody's playing politics and it's not going to work with us in Pennsylvania!

Clinton 'O8 and…if not…lesser of two evils McCain '08!

Th3rdpwr   April 22nd, 2008 7:34 pm ET

To newsflash obama morons: I read the article which said Obama HAD a debt of $650, 000 with a $41 mill surplus coming into April. Hillary, on the other hand, had a more considerable $10 mill debt!!!!

Th3rdpwr   April 22nd, 2008 7:29 pm ET

Hillary supporters, your own candidate has said he could beat McCain in the general election. Are you disagreeing with her? Are you saying she doesn't know what she's talking about? Are you calling her a liar? If not, the unelectability excuse no longer holds water.

Ted From Edmonton   April 22nd, 2008 7:27 pm ET

When you spend 6 weeks in a state and out spend your opponent 3 or 4 to one and you still lose by 10 points or more there are no excuses, no amount of spin can change the fact he has not been able to close the deal on any major state except his own. There is no way the democrats win if he is the nominee and the super delegates know it !!

You Obamabots might also also take note that the polls show Clinton beating McCain in Missouri now and Obama getting beat badly.

Holly   April 22nd, 2008 7:23 pm ET

It's not hard to earn so much money when you have Oprah campaigning for you. She puts an Oprah Club sticker on a book and even the people who hate to read will run out to purchase it. She gives away cars. She has millions upon millions of viewers - I mean, what else is there to watch after all of the laid off Americans are done watching the soap operas? But for me, a talk show queen does not decide who I vote for to lead the country.

For me, I don't care what money is earned or how much someone owes during their campaigning - because our financial system as it relates to campaigning is either feast or famine. The fact that Hillary owes money makes me feel like she is is ethically using her money as opposed to "finding it" somewhere.

It is sad, you really DO need money to win an election, which is exactly opposite to the beliefs that our country was founded on. But considering that Hillary's pockets aren't being filled by the talk show queen, I think she's doing pretty good.

And to address a previous statement : no, I will not run off and pout and cry and not vote if Hillary doesn't get the election. I feel that only the people who DO vote have the right to complain about their elected officials. If she doesn't get the nomination, I will vote for who I feel is the next best candidate: John McCain.

The honest truth please   April 22nd, 2008 6:25 pm ET

Barack is actually pretty impressive! Remember he is the guy that "know body knows" but has out raise Hillary and John with finances. He's the guy with the funny name that seems to have put a major "dent" in Hillary's and Bill's game. Penn was Hillary's but in 6 weeks he HAS out spent her and now they are what neck to neck. Hello talk about strategy. She has been doing this for what 35 years?? You would think she has this thing down. How will she balance an American Budget if she can't balance her own? How will she control the goverment if her campaign is out of wack? Oh I forgot Bill-

Look I actually loved the Clinton and thought they were awsome but I did not watch politics like I do now and I can see for myself how they are and I am dissappointed because I do believe it will be more of the same……

Jaime Nava   April 22nd, 2008 6:24 pm ET

The Urban Sombrero.   April 22nd, 2008 6:24 pm ET

Yeah! Hillary's using the Huckabee argument, "You don't need money to win!" It's true, votes are what matter. Not the fact that Obama was a huge underdog in this state two weeks ago. Not how many delegates he's earned, and all the superdelegates hopping on the bandwagon. Not the fact that a year ago, no one outside of Illinois or political circles knew who Barack Obama was, and now is the leading contender compared to a two term senator, two time first lady, and what, wife to a 4 term governor of Arkansas.

Wait, what's that? Where's Huckabee now?

Balls… To heck with it. Clinton's fried.

Spirit of America   April 22nd, 2008 6:24 pm ET

Today's election in PA is really the General Election.
With a double-digit win and thereby the nomination for Clinton, Hillary beats McCain by a landslide in Nov.
With a close win and thereby the nomination for Obama, Barack loses to McCain by a landslide in Nov.

paul   April 22nd, 2008 6:20 pm ET

The Clinton's are trying in any way that it's possible to convince the American people that Barack Obama can't win in the General Election in Nov, by saying that they have one the big states. News Flash, this is not the General, we are still in the Primary season, and if Barack Obama wins more state, delegates and Popular vote to become the nominee, he will carry all of the States that Hillary has won so far, THE BIG STATE THEORY IS A WEAK ONE!!!!!!!!

PA Mom   April 22nd, 2008 6:16 pm ET

Yesterday, my neighbors and I received robocalls that said "Do not vote for Barack Obama because he will use federal money to fund partial birth abortions."

For that alone, Hillary should be ashamed. Fear works, and she knows how to use it.

Disgusting.

David D Kollie   April 22nd, 2008 6:15 pm ET

Why can't the media report about HRC debts on national TV and radios.
If that was Obama in such a debt will they have kept silence?

Fair reporting to me is a reproting about all aspects of both candidates without holding back. Most people do not turn to the Blogs or political tickers for news.

If she can not pay her debts how will things be when she becomes president?

Charles   April 22nd, 2008 6:15 pm ET

Make no mistake about it. Barack went for the knockout here with millions and millions of dollars being spent and there will be nothing to show for the effort. She closed the deal on Pennsylvania. In the last two months, he's being defined in a negative way and the fact that there are 35% of the superdelegates still uncommitted means that this race is still up for grabs. A win tonight of 7 to 10 points is a huge win in a big state that matters a whole bunch for democrats. Let's face it, since those string of wins a couple of months ago, Barack has only gone downhill.

Sherri   April 22nd, 2008 6:12 pm ET

How silly is this?

The Clinton spin machine is in overdrive.

Undecided   April 22nd, 2008 6:08 pm ET

OK, I'll accept your logic Hillary. However, will you also agree that you need to with North Carolina???? How about Indiana? Oregon? Or do you only need to win states you can win, and then when we talk about states you can't, we revert to your flimsy superdelegate argument.

TONI   April 22nd, 2008 6:08 pm ET

Senator Obama has run a very discretly negative campaign! Hes been extremly good at letting other people do his derogatory acts. After watching his speech last week after the debate, watching him shoot the bird at hilary, very discreetly and then laugh about it. Not very presidental in my book. Tells me hes bitter and angry. I dont think hes got what it takes to be a president. Talk is cheap! Hes out spending her 4-1 and cant close the deal. I dont want to see this presidentcy purchased. I also know If he wins, hes going to renig on his promise in writing, to not accept campaign money (private) Hes already put the spin on how hes going to get out of that promise. What really hurts me, is to see the African American community abandon the Clintons. After all the Clintons have done in their entire lifetime for them. To vote for an unknown, untested , with no record., because he's of the same ethnic backround? Shame on you! We are picking a President. Use your heads. If Obama and Clinton posted a resume for the same job, with their experience and qualifications who would you hire? Obama hasnt spent a year in the Senate. Hes been campaigning the whole time. He hasnt put the sweat into it.

Nadine Indianapolis, In.   April 22nd, 2008 6:08 pm ET

The Clintons have shown an a daily basis that they are willing to do or
say anything to win - it doesn't matter if it's true, not true, 1/2 true or taken out of context. I once had a great deal of admiration for former
President Clinton, but his behavior in this campaign has been beyond
contempt. To see a former President out in the trenches, so to speak,
and slinging mud proves that they will do ANYTHING. What he's done is demeaning to the office of President. Former President GHW Bush
didn't give speeches like that when his SON was running, did he? It
isn't necessary. For this and other reasons…………………….

Obama "08″ YES WE CAN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A Moderate in Uniform   April 22nd, 2008 6:06 pm ET

How many mistakes in character judgement does Senator Obama have to make before he's recognized as the amature he is?
Rev. Jeremiah Wright; former spiritual advisor to Sen. Obama
Norman Yung Yuen Hsu convicted funds manager for Sen. Obama
Antoin "Tony" Rezko Obama campaign fund raiser on federal charges
If the list above reflects his judgement in character, then what kind of advisors will he appoint to his cabinet, the joint chiefs, or the UN?
Sen. Obama's promise of change is an easy song to sing when President Bush's approval rating in the twenties. The executive branch, and whomever wins the drivers seat, has no where to go but up. My toughest decison will be between McCain-Rice or Clinton-TBD.

Holly   April 22nd, 2008 6:06 pm ET

All I know is that I do support Hillary not necessarily as a fantastic candidate but as the most solid candidate. If she does not receive the Democratic nomination, I will vote for McCain.

Obama is an inspiring public speaker - but not a President. Hey, I'm an inspiring public speaker too, but I am in no good position to run a country and neither is he. He is trying to win the election based on feel-good catch phrases, smooth body language, and purposely NOT answering the difficult questions. Of course, that's not all his fault, since everyone is so ga-ga over him that he doesn't really get the difficult questions.

Catch phrases don't help guide the country through a rough economy, damaged foreign relations, and energy crises. A junior senator who's only claim to fame is that he voted against the war and a previous career of being in state legislature voting on pay increases for dogcatchers doesn't make me feel confident in his abilities to run the country.

I am sorry if I've offended anyone, but the reality is that we shouldn't elect a "cool" president or a really nice president or a president that is friends with Oprah or a president that we could see ourselves hanging out with and discussing a movie over a couple of beers.

We need someone who is experienced, invokes confidence, and can handle the tough issues. Senator Obama is simply not this person.

Jody   April 22nd, 2008 6:04 pm ET

People are talking about how a candidate can be a manager of the country's finances based on their campaigns.

Ok, well, let's look at it this way.

Obama throws a ton of money at a state, and doesn't get a win. He outspends Hillary, what , 2 to 1, 3 to 1, 4 to 1, and he STILL can't get a win.

Hillary uses less money way more effectively. She spends less than Obama and pulls out win after win.

So - who really is the better money manager?

It's all about bang for the buck, folks!

James   April 22nd, 2008 6:04 pm ET

The typical spineless citizens who has forgotten how to fight. You can't spin outspending someone 4 - 1 and lose. Impossible to spin. It is going to be interesting to hear the belly aching and name calling after Clinto wins tonight. All of you Obama supporters need to get a backbone and learn how to fight. This lady is going out to win and the Obama people want to, actually I don't know what you people want.

Say all you want to but the Lady has earned the respect of people who know how to fight and win against odds. She has more guts and balls than all of you who call her names and make fun of her. 99% percent of you could not wear her shoes because you don't merit them.

It doesn't take guts to sit behind a computer and spew out hate. Any moron can do that. Frankly all of you are gutless wonders.

I wonder why I didn't read all of this vile thrown at Bush. Gutless , gutless, gutless people.

LisaSF   April 22nd, 2008 6:04 pm ET

Um, Obama didn't "go for broke" in PA. He has $41 million in the bank. Clinton went for broke; Her campaign is $10 million in the red, down $15 million if you count the loan she made to the campaign.

Clinton started out 20 points ahead in PA. Anything less than a 20 point Clinton represents what her campaign has been from the beginning: a downward slide.

Th bottomline is this race is over. It has been over since Wisconsin and Clinton is not going to have the big delegate comeback she needs tonight. She will win, but not by enough to matter. Still, due to her stubborn ways, Obama is going to go on to beat her in North Carolina and Indiana . . . and probably Oregon, Montana, and South Dakota too. Then, the Superdelegates are going to have to literally puch her out of the race sometime in June. Sad and pathetic to watch her lower herself this way.

America won't elect Obama   April 22nd, 2008 6:03 pm ET

The reason Obama can't close this one is the Clinton camp is using Karl's play book, letting the media do its dirty work for them. Can you not see the finger prints of the Clintons from the debate, Ayres, and Rev. Wright all coming from the Clinton camp. The reason Obama has not closed this is because when Hillary is about to loose the Clinton research team feeds the media. The media boys need a story and so we have to play the Clinton game one more time.

Can't believe all the nasty, cynical Obama supporters and their nasty, cynical comments. Hillary was out there working for the rights of disadvantaged children and minorities right after she got her law degree before she was into anything political. Guess you must hold that against her. She sincerely tried to get health care for everyone during her husbands presidency. Guess you must hold that against her. She traveled abroad to China and other countries and spoke up for womens rights. Guess you must hold that against her. I hope all of your bitter lives get better. But i doubt it.

He constantly Puts down the country and the government of This Great Nation.

He has ran his campaign from the start using the Blame and Shame game. Every one is wrong but him. Like a 10 year old.

He uses race for his own purpose, to get votes, to make people feel guilty to vote for him, to make people look bad. He thinks his race gives him the right to condemn this country.

He lets his religion rule what he does.

He has no Honor or intergrity, anyone who can lie on their family, Best friends, and call his grandmother who raised him a "typical white woman". He has serious personal issues that he needs help with.

He lies, twist facts, and makes up stories, when caught he has no remorse. He thinks he can do anything and it is ok

He Has No Respect for the Government or any thing about it or part of it and says he wants to lead it. evident by how he is constantly demeaning it and putting it down in public.

He divides the nation, with his words, actions and deeds. Keeps and puts people in their group they belong or at least he things. Does not treat people as equal. He will sell out one group out over the other.

He does not the difference between anti-America and racism.

He flipped someone off and got away with it. Shameful and sinful.

He whines, and cries woe is me, can complains.

Hillary Clinton is a fighter, she has more experience as a politician and is a superior campaigner. Flat out. She should win tonight!!

She also took money for Presidential Pardons ($400k Hugh Rodham)
She removed/destroyed evidence during Whitewater.
She recently covered $400k campaign debt for votes trade.
She was busted on camera during blatant campaign fraud.

The Bosnia thing was just funny…but when she preyed on a poor womans death to illustrate a point about her health care program……that is just sick!!! Imagine your mother or family member died during unfortnate circumstances at a hospital…..and then a politican tried to get votes at your expense!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Are you kidding me??? Is this your fighter? Oh that takes guts to drag your loss into the media for her personal gain!!!!! Is this the character that represents the people of PA, or the rest of the country? Wake up people.

Obama should win and will win if the voters pay attention. An intelligent voter would duly note yet another lie, "playing the race card" comment, today by Bill. Along with Hillary's "under sniper fire" lie, the two obviously will say anything and do anything to get back into the White House. Why Pennsylvania voters don't pay attention to that is beyond me.

That's what I have learned from this campaign. I honestly used to admire Bill even when he cheated on the nation and had his dirty things in the Oval Office

Cindy   April 22nd, 2008 5:52 pm ET

Obama doesn't close the deal because he doesn't want to destroy the party. Clinton obviously has no problem doing that.

When Bush and Gore had a standoff in Florida, Gore didn't want to destroy the country, so he conceded to Bush. Should he, or shouldn't he have done that? Clinton appears to think destroying the party is better than admitting the inevitable. Is that the right answer? I personally think she's wrong. She and her supporters obviously think otherwise. They'd rather destroy the party than let the obvious happen. I think Hillary is being vindictive and petty. Not very good presidential traits.

SpaceCat   April 22nd, 2008 5:52 pm ET

HRClinton has won the most Electoral Votes so far. The Obama Campaign doesn't ever mention that fact. And even though we don't really like it, it is the electoral votes that carry the day in November. So keep you eye on those tabs as this thing rolls along. That is why it is not so cut and clear to remaining undecided Superdelegates as to who has the best shot of prevailing in November. Because it is not necessarily who has the the most states, or the most of the popular vote, or has run the best campaign, or who has so far the most superdelegates. It comes down to who can win in November, and that means who gets the electoral votes.

John Smith   April 22nd, 2008 5:48 pm ET

What is so sad, as people vote, is that they forget that other nations are watching us.

We are eager to return to the White House, a family that
1. has lied to the U.S. (and the world) over and over again
2. has been impeached for breaking the laws of this nation
3. has sold our jobs overseas and are now reaping the benefits (think of the $109 million from the gains from the past)
4. works only for their own "name and reputation," not the American people.
6. has a woman who is hated by well over 50% of our people.

No one really believes that with the above record, any Clinton can restore the name, economy, and good-will of this nation back to the 1990's. Not even Bill can replicate the past economic foundations.

It is okay to "hope" but with such a history what hope is actually out there that any of the Clintons can get anything done in Washington again! They have burned their bridges, while we remain fools wanting to get them back there to help their egos! Both Clintons were Presidents of the United States; very scary!

Edith   April 22nd, 2008 5:48 pm ET

The Clintons might win but there is no denying they have destroyed the stellar reputation they once enjoyed. With Bill coming out with one gaffe a day such as today's, lying straight to the camera while reporters have the full audio tape confirming he is lying, I don't think many will be running to her defend her when the Republican attack machine gets a hold of her.

BAKERSFIELD, it's you older people that brought us Bush Jr. in the first place. Maybe it's time to take a seat to the younger generation and let us show you what we are capable of. Clinton dropped from having nearly a 30% lead in PA just 1.5 months ago to now having 8%. That in my books shows someone who has lost momentum and considering how far she already is down on delegates, the only thing she is trying to do now is ruin Obama's chance against McCain so that she has the chance come 2012.

Clinton should never accuse anyone of being negative when she has been the first one to do it.
*Barack do you need a Pillow? If thats not ugly and nasty, then what is?
* Using fear tactics.
*Lying about ads Obama sent out. The one he used in Ohio he used it in SC too. Way before the Ohio primary, why didn't she cry about it then.
*Lying about Bosnia. Hello people she didn't need to do this at all, so why lie about it. And three times. Give me a break. You guys want another lying president or is it some other reason.
*If she mandates Healthcare, people on minimum wage who can't afford it, get ready to pay with a garnishment of your wages. I have read Clinton's plan and this is exactly what it says. Bring down cost make it affordable, without giving the Insurance Companies a windfall.
*She is becoming the Mike Huckabee of the Democratic Party.
* She can't win. Subtract FL and MI delegates and he is the nominee.

* Democrats you have always voted for the lesser of two evils, why change today?
Vote Obama.
* By the way, if its because he is black, go ahead and say that is why you won't vote for him. I understand, you are just living up to the true American dream, set up by the segregationists of the past and the morals and values you learned from your parents. Again I respect honesty.

During the Kansas-Memphis national basketball championship game, one of the Memphis players shot what appeared to be a 3-pointer, but an official review determined that he launched his jump shot from inside the 3-point line. Two points were awarded. Three would have won the game. If the Memphis players thought like Clinton admirers in regard to Florida and Michigan, they would have cursed the rules, then demanded that the additional point be counted. If the officials had then suggested that all agreed to play by the rules before they walked onto the court, players with the Clinton mindset would have claimed that they won the championship, and the Kansas players should be ashamed for stealing it.

Hillary’s campaign likes to say that a win is a win but she forgets that she started out with a 20-25% lead before any votes were casted. Yes, he could lose the popular count tonight but over all she has lost, she will lose 20% is that a win? Home court advantage!!!!

Here we go again! Hillary using republican scaremongering strategies, threatening Iran, at the time of elections. I thought we are trying to easy tensions and not to inflame them in time when American rating in the world is very low. The best things for our foes in the world are Hillary’s or McCain’s drums of war and have our reputation slip down the ladder.

I heard Clinton say to a reporter today "Why can't Obama close the deal?"
Well, why can't she close the deal? Wasn't this whole race considered hers to win back in january? Isn't that why she and her campaign did not plan past super tuesday?

And why is it everyone from her corner said she needed a huge win tonight, including some of the media. but now "a win is a win"?

Talk about double standards. One more question? How do people expect Clinton to run the country when she can't run her own campaign. Plus, she's out of money,

Obama cannot win PA because there is a limit to the people there that fit his demographics. He will get most of the African American vote and most of the ultra liberal vote and a bunch of the young peoples vote but that is not a majority of the people who live in PA. He was doing pretty well closing the race until he insulted most of the rest of the state with his "bitter" characterizations.

I do not think it is as much that he is African-American as that he is an unknown quantity who refuses to speak in specifics about what he will do. It is very inspiring to talk of hope and change but not one word on how to achieve it. Please Sen. Obama please name any Republican Senator who you plan to convince to support your plans to yearly increase the minimum wage. Name one who supports the unions agenda. Name one who wants to raise taxes on people making more than $250,000.00 a year. Name one who wants to support your almost universal health program. Name one who will vote to bring our troops home from Iraq unconditionally.

You have to prove that you are ready to fight for these things and other than your rhetoric you have no record to even support that you believe in these things. You will not win PA because you have not convinced the middle of the democratic party that you have the intestinal fortitude greater than Clinton to get things done. Until you do, this will remain a 50-50 race.

If you don't STAND for CHANGE, you will FALL for Clinton!!!   April 22nd, 2008 5:28 pm ET

Has the media forgotten that Obama was down by over 20 points a few weeks ago? It's not like his money hasn't reaped benefits. The fact that he has even come this far shows that Americans are tired of dirty politics a la Bush-Rove-Cheney-Clinton sort.

Bakersfield- instead of patronizing "young" voters, how about you give us some credit for getting involved in something that is going to influence our lives longer than it will influence yours? WE have a lot more to lose. I'm 30, a highly educated professional, who has grown up having a Bush or Clinton in the executive branch almost all of my life. I was a very good kid who always listened to my parents, but I don't need anyone to tell me how to vote.

Shawna   April 22nd, 2008 5:26 pm ET

Because Sen. Obama is an upstart, and Sen. Clinton has had all the advantages of being a known politician. So that changes the question of who should win, and by how much should they win by. Sen. Obama is a fairly new face in politics, John McCain is not. If you can't handedly win against a newcomer how do you expect to win against John McCain and the Republican attack machine. Especially since Clinton states she is battle tested…polling shows she can be beaten in these states, the candidate simply needs enough time, resources, and name recognition, all of these John McCain has as a republican challenger.

Mauri   April 22nd, 2008 5:25 pm ET

It's as simple and as true as it was the day we first heard it: Hillary Clinton can literally hit the ground running and doing what needs to be done to turn this country around. Has anyone ever done a study about how long it takes a newly elected, inexperienced, President to finish the inevitable learning curve? Well try this one on and see what we can expect if Barack Obama wins. George W. Bush, who had similar governing experience as Obama has, took office January 20,2001. Eight months later, Al Queda struck the twin towers in New York, killing over 3000 people, and he kept right on reading "The Hungry Caterpillar" for several minutes more before it sunk in that for the first time ever, we had been attacked on the mainland. I challenge all voters to remember this when you mark your ballot during the primary season. Hillary is ready….now.

Alex in TX   April 22nd, 2008 5:25 pm ET

Hey Bakersfield, other than JFK, what Politicians are anywhere close to being like Obama. Seems like he was young, charismatic, intelligent and articulate. Seems like he was a pretty good president even during his "3 AM" call with Cuba. Give Obama a chance, he'll prove your skepticism wrong.

4:07 pm - Voter Machine Problems in West Philly

With record numbers of new registrants for a primary election, voter-protection groups have reported some glitches at polling places around the region.

More than 100 complaints - several about malfunctioning machines - have been lodged so far, according to Watch the Vote 2008, a Washington-based coalition of voter groups.

Relative to other primary elections in the nation, "my sense is that the machine problems are high," said Kathryn Bookvar, an attorney with the Advancement Project, also in Washington.

She said that voters at a polling place in the 49th Ward near the Fern Rock station had to wait two hours because of machine malfunctions. Machine problems also were reported in West Oak Lane; Elkins Park, Montgomery County; and Upper Darby, Delaware County.

In addition, "numerous" registration snafus were reported to the Committee of Seventy, the Philadelphia election-watchdog organization, said John David, the election coordinator.

The bulk of those complaints have come from voters who switched parties and whose names did not appear on the rolls of the new party. The city has been inundated with calls, said David, adding: "It's swamping the voter-registration office."

Hillary needs to win ALL the remaining 10 states by 10% - and take 60% of the super delogates! Even then, it's far too close - also the Super Delegates have a responsability to support the popular vote! for her to win that she needs a crazy number of 63% on average over the next 10 states! Hillary Clinton is the only candidate that can take on John Mccain according to the Boston Herald Obamais tied with MCcain in Masachussetts which is the most liberal state in America. Obama has been in Washington for 3 years and has made no attempt to work with people across the aisle. I would love to know which world the Obama supporters live in because it is obviusly not reality, you have the most liberal senator in the senate supported by the far left of the party, who made no attempt to compromise with the republicans claiming he will unite the country. That is fantasy do you believe that special interest/lobbyists/big business/republicans/world leaders will fall at Barak Obamas feet! Oh and by the way he justed voted against his own spending plans!!! You all criticise Hillary on her clothes, laugh, personality etc but can't accept that America has the right to find out about Obama. He says he is running on judgement, but stays in a racist church for 20 years, thanks his grandmother for raising him by throwing her under the bus, if you read his books they are anti white, he only says what you would like to hear him say but when you look at his actions they contradict what he says.Actions speak louder the words

Bennet   April 22nd, 2008 5:18 pm ET

I'm wondering when the Press and the Pundits have counted her out, and what the Clinton camp means when they claim that they have "repeatedly proved them wrong". As far as I know, Clinton was supposed to have the nomination completely under wraps after Super Tuesday, after having outspent Obama up until that point, when he started raising money in droves. Yes, he has spend more money than her in Pennsylvania, because he has been ABLE to spend more money in Pennsylvania - The Clinton camp is in debt! Everyone had counted Obama completely out, until February 5th, when the tides were turned a little. If Clinton counts her Ohio and Texas "victories" (when she actually lost in Texas) as proving the press wrong, well, I suppose I can't stop her from making erroneous claims. Its been 6 weeks since a primary vote, she has done no proving to anybody, its only been Barack gaining ground on her and pulling to where he is in Pennsylvania.

Also, I do not understand why there is such a big fuss over Clinton winning states which normally fall to the democrats anyway. If they fall to the democrats anyway, they are certainly going to fall to Obama in an election which should very strongly swing towards the Democratic party, after the 8 years of Bush. Obama is certainly the only one with a chance to win the states that normally fall Republican, however, as many of the independent, and even some republican voters are turning out for him in large numbers.

Stop Hillary   April 22nd, 2008 5:18 pm ET

HRC Supporters,

Please argue with reason and logic plus evident and fact if you have any. By the way, play the game by the rule should also apply.

Here is the deal:

Popular Votes as of today: Obama > Clinton
States Won as of today: Obama > Clinton
Delegates Lead as of today: Obama > Clinton

If HRC did not win over 13% of margin in PA, the above facts still hold truth.

Great point, Hillary… What good is outspending your opponent 3 to 1 and STILL LOSING!!!! How could he ever even begin to imagine in his wildest dreams that he has any chance come November in big states that the Democrats must win in order to take back the White House? The answer is simple people…Obama has racked up millions of votes in states that won't be voting for Democrats in the Fall. In other words, the votes and delegates Obama has won are essentially useless.

If the Dems really want the White House, their only hope is Hillary who has proven she can win the big states that the Dems must have in order to win the Presidency.

It doesn"t matter which liberal candidate you demos put up against McCain. You are going to lose in November. Get used to it.

We are just trying to keep Hillary in the game to shine the light on the most radical candidate the Demos have put up since George McGovern.

This is from a bitter country boy that clings to his religion and his guns.

beyonce pride   April 22nd, 2008 5:12 pm ET

THE SUPER DELEGATES WILL RALLY BEHIND HILLARY IF SHE WINS BY 10 points, proving Obama can't win Blue COllar workers, the people the democrats need to win the general election with. Obama better be scared, that the race could be over for him if she gets that 10 percent and she gets all the remaining 300 super delegates. He would have no chance but to drop out. So by by Obama…

Johnny   April 22nd, 2008 5:12 pm ET

lol @ bellwether state…

Hillary lost missouri, a bellwether state, but you didnt get out did she? so why should Obama

and if Obama cant win against McCain. we know for certain that she cant win Against him either, cuz she is already behind..in delegates, in states won, in the popular vote…

billary said Obama supporters are in a fantasy, so why would out fantasizing selves want to support Hillary if she wins the nomination? you have given us reason to stay home if you win, or vote McWar..

personally, I will stay home

newsflash obama morons   April 22nd, 2008 5:11 pm ET

Obama is in debt as well, but I guess you're too stupid to read that whole article as it said Hillary was in debt…

R. T.   April 22nd, 2008 5:10 pm ET

Obama supporters are in full panic mode…buying the PA primary didn't work. Uh oh.

SHEILA WAGNER   April 22nd, 2008 5:09 pm ET

I KNOW WHAT OUR ECONOMY WAS LIKE WHEN HER HUSBAND WAS IN OFFICE AND I CAN ONLY HOPE SHE CAN GET SOME OF THAT BACK FOR US. I AM ALSO A (WOMEN) SMALL BUSINESS OWNER AND FEEL HILLARY WOULD BE ABLE TO HELP SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS AND TAXES ON SMALL BUSINESSES.

"I wanted to vote multiple times for him today, but unfortunately they would only let me cast one ballot."

Funny that Democrats in Obama's home state don't seem to have your problem.

Sick and Tired of obama   April 22nd, 2008 5:09 pm ET

Obama needs to win PA he spent 9 million dollars, he supposedly can win, so why can't he now?

Jan   April 22nd, 2008 5:09 pm ET

Today is the day the bottom falls out of the Clinton campaign. Good over evil. The Clintons have shown the American people what they really stand for…..not much! Obama has run his campaign like a true American patriot. He stands for the issues that the American people are interested in and is willing to work for their concerns. Barack Obama is the one !!!
A proud Canadian

Delegate Count   April 22nd, 2008 5:09 pm ET

Hillary's campaign is trying to make it a state by state contest now because she is losing in the overall count. She would like for these last twelve or so states to be the only ones that count. Just like a loser, trying to change the rules as you go. In the end, the original rules will count, which 2024 delegates. Obama won't have 2024 either, but he'll have at least 100 more than Hillary. So who should be the nominee? OBAMA!

alice2   April 22nd, 2008 5:09 pm ET

Obama said he did not expect to win PA but he said it would be close. Hillary should win it big time, that is what she has been saying, it is her "home town" and has been portraying herself as the "home town girl" just like she portrayed herself as the "home town girl from New York" when she was running for Senator in N.Y. Bill portrayed himself as "black Pres" even to the point of getting an office in Harlem. However; now there is a black man running for Pres. he (Bill Clinton) makes any "cheap shot" he can, like the Jesse Jackson remark, & the more recent one, that Obama campaign "played the race card on him." then when asked about it, claimed he did not say it, BUT WE HAVE IT ON TYPE, when the reporter asked him about it, he tried to LIE out of it. I think Clintons are secretly racist, and publicly something else. Both are LIARS, & UNTRUSTWORTHY that has been proven by past history.

pam   April 22nd, 2008 5:08 pm ET

Some news for Venus. NC will be a red state in November, along with many of the other states Obama has won. With the electoral process as it currently stands, the bottom line is that he is less electable than Hillary. Time for Obama to at least acknowledge this very huge obstacle. No doubt, the superdelegates are concerned about it.

Delaware   April 22nd, 2008 5:08 pm ET

PA get out and vote.

Vince - Phoenix   April 22nd, 2008 5:07 pm ET

does anyone REALLY think Rev Wright spouted hate every Sunday for 20 years???

anyone???

really???

i just had to ask because this is the "reason" some are listing as why they would not vote for Obama. And i'll call it what it is… a copout. a cover for a person who would not have voted for him if our Lord Jesus came down to endorse him.

Doug, New Jersey   April 22nd, 2008 5:06 pm ET

As a republican I was really pulling for Hillary but after what Obama has said about white people and middle America, after we find out that his mentor is a racist pastor who makes David Duke seem like Mother Teresea, I'm now behind Obama all the way.

I miss the good 'ol days of the country electoral map being almost all republican like it was in the 80's. Thanks to Mr. Obama, I will get to see us return to those maps again.

The American people are decent, loving, honest people who are humble and fair. Obama is the opposite of all of those things, maybe not as much as those who are supporting him, but he still is. I can't wait to hear all the libs crying about president McCain, the only sad part is that I bet that quite a few of them will end up as new Al Queda recruits like that John Walker fool and the other cali-lib.

LET ME GET MY FACTS RIGHT   April 22nd, 2008 5:06 pm ET

We all called for Clinton and Obama to "fight" more and stop being nice.

Clinton draws the first blow, and then BAM…. shame on Hillary by everyone.

It's hilarious. It's almost like Obama and the media set her up on purpose. Personally, I blame the media.

People like them wont' report how the creation of safer bio fuels is destroying the economy and actually damaging the environment more than what we currently do now (which is still not a great method).

I mean seriously we burn our food for fuel, when there are food riots all around the world for higher prices, and we wonder why some people dont' like our policies?

But I'm sure this statement will be met with hostility from "liberals" because apparently all that matters is republican vs democrat at all costs… right vs wrong doesn't seem to matter anymore, and it's silly.

And I'm a democrat, and the attitudes expressed on these forums make me what to disband the party completely and call these democrats what they really are… socialists… everyone else can form a new party..

I guess the USSR wins after all…

Susan   April 22nd, 2008 5:05 pm ET

Go Sen. Clinton! Obama either whines about being attacked . . . or attacks himself! He a novice and a trend! He needs to take a seat and observe the next President Clinton as she teaches him how it's done.

SueB   April 22nd, 2008 5:05 pm ET

Ah, Hillary, Barack forced you to spend more than you could afford in Pennsylvania. You have 10 million in debt. You can't afford to compete in NC AND IN. Obama has already won.

jonny   April 22nd, 2008 5:04 pm ET

The argument that one person could not win the general election because they do not win certain states in the primary is silly. Most people who vote for Hilary in the primary would vote for Obama over McCain in the election (or vice versa if Hilary won the primaries). Obama excites people. Excited people vote way more often. That in itself will give Obama a significant advantage over McCain. Obama also has won many Republican states - and if in the general election he can win those again, that is way more important than being able to win the "easy" states.

James   April 22nd, 2008 5:04 pm ET

Hillary Clinton's campaign is always negative. There is no way should win the nomination. She is just trying to destroy the Democratic Party.

Grammy in Oklahoma   April 22nd, 2008 5:04 pm ET

My rational and sober (no tainted koolaid) says that Senator Clinton is the more honest candidate in the race. Senator Obama will not even answer questions about anything: he simply keeps putting out faulty information through his speeches, brochures and supporters.
And even the radicals that hate the United States are hoping he will win.
If Senator Obama wins, Americans are the losers. Sorry, folks, that is the way it will be.
I would vote for McCain over Obama; at least I know he loves the USA and has proven it by his military service and elected offices.

NObama   April 22nd, 2008 5:03 pm ET

Nothing sticks to this guy..

Who'da-thunk in 2008 that the college twinks would be deciding what's best for this country.. being blinded by a thin resume, and pearly whites?

Well, teenagers MUST know best!

They obviously don't remember the 90s…. In the late 90s, I remember purchasing gas for as little as 77cents/gallon in Houston, TX.

True, our economy and much more has changed drastically.. but this is not a reality show where we pick the next American Idol Dancing with the Stars on Survivor!

This is serious business.

Obama needs to bow out gracefully. The Republicans will chew him up in the fall if nominated.

Thomas in Florida   April 22nd, 2008 5:03 pm ET

Obama wasn't trying to buy Pennsylvania's nomination for the Democratic race. He was campaigning there for the general.

This race has been over for more than a month.

Doc   April 22nd, 2008 5:03 pm ET

Why can't he Win?
He can get 35,000 to turn out for a rally but not enough to vote.
He can get millions and millions of dollars from online but can't turn it into votes…

Why Can't he Win?????

Because we the people don't have any control over our government and haven't for a very long time, that's why. The voters have already spoken the (popular vote) delegate count. I credit the Clinton camp with at least being honest about that if nothing else they seem to know as well why he can't win against an age old political machine. What I'm seeing here is that while we have no control over this government at least i have control over my dollar (of little to no value) which is the some of those millions and my vote (despite it on all accords being ignored) which is the sum of the populus.

What will we do when he loses is a better question?

Marc   April 22nd, 2008 5:02 pm ET

STRAWWWW MANNNN

In the end, it's the math that matters, and regardless of who "wins" or "loses" in Penn., Clinton knows the math is against her. It's pretty sad to see that she's so compelled to spin a "win" (which she'll get, and even Obama knows it) into something bigger to try and make up a deficit in votes that, at this point, is just too big to close. That's basically admitting defeat already, which is kind of a step forward for her. Admitting the truth, that is.

Chyrel Wallace-Jackson, Chicago Illinois   April 22nd, 2008 5:02 pm ET

Give me a break HRC! Your campaign is full of spin. You may have fooled the poor people of Pennsylvania but everytime I recall Bosnia, the Mark Penn Columbian Trade Deal
