Hillary Clinton gets a boost from voters economic concerns Tuesday.
Hillary Clinton gets a boost from voters economic concerns Tuesday.

(CNN) — The economy is the No. 1 issue among Pennsylvania Democrats, just as it has been in nearly every other primary state. Close to 55 percent of voters there rank it the top issue, while 28 percent say the Iraq war is their top concern.

Hillary Clinton is the clear beneficiary — she's winning 56 percent of voters who are worried about the economy, while Obama wins 43 percent of those voters.

…….wow in 2008 as a country we still look at things in black and white

ron   April 22nd, 2008 7:49 pm ET

Hillary will not honor her promises. Watch out Gov. Rendell, and Gov. Strickland there is not going to be a Clinton / ? ticket

Go Obama 08

sjp   April 22nd, 2008 7:36 pm ET

her and her cronies can't manage a campaign but these people think she will be great for american economy? people are such sheep, they all think the clinton nomination will bring back the 90's. sorry to burst the bubble but smart people know it was the technology sector that drove that economy not the clinton presidency.

A TYPCAL WHITE PERSON   April 22nd, 2008 7:29 pm ET

That our girl we are !

FRANCES LEE BRIGHT   April 22nd, 2008 7:25 pm ET

It is too bad.. the people do not know history… bill clinton had the best presidency of the last 50 years…. history is facts… and when republicans are showed up?.. they hide them. President Reagan and Mark Fowler of the FCC.. got rid of the fairness doctrine. It had been in place since 1928. It had 3 main regulations… 1.. the media and radio had to report the "real" news. 2.. they had to show all sides of issues and give equal time. 3.. they had to avoid consolidation into few hands.

Now we have 5 corporations who own 5600 tv stations, 16,000 radio stations and 82% of all newspapers. Bias? you bet… slanted?.. you bet. Corporations make sure their interests are first.. and to heck with the people's interests. censorship? you bet.. manipulation? you bet. beats the drums for the few and leaves out the people's business and interests?…. for 6 years Bush got away with almost everything.. due to concentration into few hands. They got their war.. their war profits, their power, their greed and never forget it. Trust? I have lost all. when they slant to Obama.. I go for Hillary… I read, I listen, I do not fall for the con. Many who comment evidently have. READ HILLARY"S books…. go back and read history of 8 years of clinton and what he did for this nation. get the facts.. do not fall for the inuendo, the sex, the glibness.. the fixation on the blips. Be informed, watch c-span and the house and the senate.. Tape them while at work. Learn the real truth so no one can con you ever again.

Go hillary.. we need you greatly .. and we love you…

Hako   April 22nd, 2008 7:21 pm ET

Wow. The shrill cries of the Obama harpies all over this place. Do you people ever research anything, or just keep repeating the same nonsense amongst yourselves? Hillary was never really in favor of NAFTA, David Gergen has verified that many times…..because he was present when she raised objections. Here's the truth: It was Bill's baby, but Hillary was his wife and the First Lady. He ASKED her to support it……what was she supposed to do? How would it look if the First Lady was opposing a policy the President was proposing? She did what any First Lady would do…..she got behind him and his ideas…. in spite of her doubts. She and Bill continue to strongly disagree on Trade issues. She wants NAFTA fixed, or says we should back out of the agreement.

Steven   April 22nd, 2008 7:18 pm ET

You people that are acting and saying crazy things about Clinton have clearly lost your perspective. She's not insane, unreasonable, or out of step. You may not like her but, face it, there's nothing to hate. And if you don't like her, yet consider yourself a democrat then ask yourself why you start foaming at the mouth over someone who has consistently voted your interest since becoming a senator, including her vote for presidential power to invade Iraq ( I disagreed with that vote but remember the majority of Americans and majority of democrats supported it at the time).

Let me get this straight, the candidate who has the most votes, delegates , and state that are traditionally red in the general election can't put Hillary away even when he outspends her 3 to 1. He can't win a traditionally Blue state and hasn't yet, except for his home state. This is a real problem for our party because he isn't a strong candidate.

Early indications are that Hillary will win big in Penn. Now she should just quit?

Tom   April 22nd, 2008 7:17 pm ET

Obama outspends her 4 – 1 in Texas, Ohio and Pennsylvania – and loses. Why would people who say economy is the biggest issue vote for Hillary. BECAUSE SHE'S GETTING 100% BETTER RESULTS WITH 25% OF THE MONEY!!!!! Y'know, maybe that has something to do with it.

Vig   April 22nd, 2008 7:16 pm ET

Pennyslvania will give Clinton a big win.

Tammy   April 22nd, 2008 7:09 pm ET

This shows most of us agree that Hillary is the one with solutions to help fix our economy, our country. We clearly see how strong she was when it comes to problem solving in the debate last week. Hillary's Universal Health Care Plan was recently praised by Elizabeth Edwards. Go Hillary!

Clinton or McCain, but NEVER obama   April 22nd, 2008 7:06 pm ET

No, I don't have to vote for obama and I will not vote for obama. I wouldn't vote for him to pick up trash along my road.

Xanadude of Velen   April 22nd, 2008 7:02 pm ET

All in Kalimdor are fond of Hillary. She has credible XP and her armor is buffed with intellect and agility points that will see her through to victory.

Joe   April 22nd, 2008 6:58 pm ET

WHY!?? Are we truly that stupid?! The Clinton/Bush Dynasty have spent the last twenty years destroying our industrial base and sending our jobs to China. Oh my God!

Kristy   April 22nd, 2008 6:57 pm ET

I think that the uneducated voter could take some things that Hillary has said out of context and explains the opinions of some people and as well as some print that has come out about Hillary. I truly believe that people tend to take sides and not look at the big picture. Our economy could take a long time to fix. One president could not fix everything. Therefore, I think that the public tend to put a heavy weight or hopes in the fact that their presidential hopeful will fix all their problems. If I was bipartisan I would go with the candidate and suggest to others that they vote for the person that will effectively and honorably end the Iraq War but at the same time can be the type of president that will not be worried about his/her popularity but is worried about national security. If I were truly thinking in this way, I would vote for Hillary. In fact, I did vote for her.

Sara from Arizona   April 22nd, 2008 6:55 pm ET

The war in Iraq is a concern? You mean the one Clinton voted for???

ERL   April 22nd, 2008 6:48 pm ET

If Clinton is 10.3 million in the red/DEBT with her own money how can the American people trust her to not put our economy in a deeper grave?????

Come on Americans wake up!! She doesn't care about you or me…she cares about being on top of the world with all the POWER in her hands to reign havoc!!! Is lying to the American people NOT a GOOD QUALIFIER to not give her the Presidency????

Let's not get suck into her politics…and become so gullible!!!

maria dimitrova   April 22nd, 2008 6:44 pm ET

Hilary did say YES YES YES YES Obama can win….so can she quit already….

Eric-Illinois   April 22nd, 2008 6:44 pm ET

Hillary wins with church goers, gun owners and those most concerned with the economy…Wise up you Obama fans. He can not win the general election. Stop drinking the Kool Aid.

deb   April 22nd, 2008 6:44 pm ET

For the bloggers who say Clinton gets the "uneducated demographic"; please read some of the comments on these boards from the Obama supporters! Most of them are illiterate at best and don't have a clue about any of the issues! This isn't even including all of the unwarranted hate that is spewed towards Hillary! Most of the Clinton bloggers talk about the issues, not about how much they "hate" the other two candidates! Go Hillary!

yobpasi NJ   April 22nd, 2008 6:43 pm ET

Obama is not going to beat Senator Mccain, wake up democrats and the remaining primaries. So give Hillary the nominations if you want to see a democrat in the Whitw House next year……………..

John M   April 22nd, 2008 6:41 pm ET

Don't blame us all here in PA. I'm in PA, and I know all about the outsourcers and bad trade deals.

Like when Bush won "Dear world, sorry, we tried. Half of America".

So Dear USA, Sorry, we tried. About half of Pa. The not old and stupid half.

Sule-1   April 22nd, 2008 6:41 pm ET

unfortunately, many of those people do not have access to correct information, most can even understand the information when they have it. That explains it… only Brand name!!!

John M   April 22nd, 2008 6:40 pm ET

India's economy is much better off due to the Clintons.

Bill W - PA   April 22nd, 2008 6:38 pm ET

Oh, yeah, because the Clintons have been great for our economy. They brought an Indian Outsourcer into NY to send $4 billion of US jobs overseas annually. She as much as said she will do nothing about the border and all the unskilled workers that come in every year (estimated at over 1 million annually – do the math, that's around 3,000 a day!) And she supported every bad trade deal, including NAFTA. The Clintons are no answer to any economic problem – they're the reason that so many of us are unemployed or underemployed.

YESWECAN08   April 22nd, 2008 6:34 pm ET

All you Hillary lovers, Hillary was the clearly the frontrunner. She has a well known and powerful last name, she was first lady for heaven's sake. But she wants to know why Obama can't close the deal. The bigger question is, why haven't she???? She can't come close to outraising him, his favorability ratings are far higher, he leads her in pledged delegates, pop. vote, and states won. I think that Clinton and her supporters need to look at themselves and ask why she couldn't effectively run her campaign, why she can't pay her bills, and why for life of her, she can't stop lying.

Bayou Joe, what a cowardly racist you are.

mzgemini, carnegie,pa   April 22nd, 2008 6:34 pm ET

I would also like to know where all this Hillary experience is coming from? If you believe she gained through osmosis or something by living in the White House, you may as well let your surgeon's spouse operate on you. Ignorance is bliss!!!

Ross in MD   April 22nd, 2008 6:32 pm ET

Why would people worried about the economy vote for the person whose campaign is $10 million in debt?

OH – that's right – Clinton gets the uneducated demographic.

Joseph, Los Angeles California   April 22nd, 2008 6:31 pm ET

The Clintons singlehandly destroyed so many jobs in Penn. and they still support that family. Is there a reason why Penn. is almost last in the country with college grads? I don't get you people.

Kristy   April 22nd, 2008 6:31 pm ET

You are all scared that a woman is going to take office and finally we are going to have a President that is going to make real positive changes. Not only do I feel that she will make changes, but she is the only one of the two democratic candidates qualified for the job. She is the only candidate with a realistic plan to end the Iraq War and to get our troops home. She is also the one candidate that is truly electable against McCain. We do not know about Obama's past, everyone has already said everything that can be said about Hillary in the past; nothing new is going to come up. Supporters of opposing parties could say a number of things about Obama or thing could come out about his past that could cloud his reputation and ultimately loose the election for the Democratic Party. Therefore, I don't think Dumb is the correct vocabulary to use for Hillary supporter; you should use politically educated.

Erin   April 22nd, 2008 6:31 pm ET

My guess would be Obama supporters are concerned with a myriad of topics, not just the economy. Let's include our global relationships, global warming, trustworthines, & the list goes on…

Robert IL   April 22nd, 2008 6:30 pm ET

It's no surprise less educated people support Hillary Clinton. They really have their blinders on when it comes to NAFTA and the Columbian trade deal.

People in PA complain about the economy, then vote for the person who helped end some of their jobs.

I just don't get it.

Madison   April 22nd, 2008 6:29 pm ET

How on earth does ANY voter, forget PA voters, vote for her on economy issues????

She plants the canadian debacle, then has her main man literally get caught in Columbia. Not to mention the money her and her man made on Bill's free trade speeches in Columbia.

Are PA voters FOR free trade???? VOTERS, WAKE UP. She's a DLC democrat, who is FOR unfettered free trade…

What world are we living in??? God save us. We're slitting our own throats.

Jay   April 22nd, 2008 6:28 pm ET

Kid yourselves if you want, Pennsylvanians. Hillary isn't going to save your factory jobs, your archaic economy. I feel sorry for you folks. If you only took a little time to investigate, you would see that you're about to be duped AGAIN!

NickNas   April 22nd, 2008 6:27 pm ET

Well I guess PA didn't get the memo about Nafta and Cafta. Sorry PA It doesn't hurt us out here in California but I thought you would have known better.

Hillary   April 22nd, 2008 6:27 pm ET

This is the only candidate who is $10,000,000 in debt, and they choose her to fix the economy? LOL! That is completely laughable. Clinton supporters are really living up to their "uneducated" stereotypes :)

mzgemini, carnegie,pa   April 22nd, 2008 6:26 pm ET

As a Pennsylvanian who fled a small rural town because of their narrowmindedness and backwards ways, the support Hillary is getting does not surprise me. Rendell knew exactly what he was talking about when he said there were some people who just would not vote for Barack. They would rather see another Bush term than vote for a black man.

For those who "spin" the amount spent campaigning, how would Hillary fair in a state that was 80% black and more college educated? With the make-up of this state, her lead should have expanded, rather than shrunk.

james, FLL   April 22nd, 2008 6:26 pm ET

I'm not pro Obama nor against Hillary but for people who lost their jobs mostly due to free trade deal..Hillary supported NAFTA, campaigned for NAFTA as her white house record shows and bill Clinton got paid $800.000 for a speech in favor of the columbian trade deal making money on the american workers back and for people who are concerened about the economy, their pocket , to vote Clinton is just stupid, i'm sorry but those old folks are just dumb or they need their alzheimers medication . They forget things..

sorry PA i thought you were smarter than that.

Paul   April 22nd, 2008 6:26 pm ET

Great choice

Now Hillary is the comeback kid!!!

Cause she truly cares about our nation unlike other people who limit themselves to criticize. She is back to show those who judge her without ackwnowledging her expertise that she is the best prepared to fix the real issues that we face as a nation.

Sharon Ohio   April 22nd, 2008 6:25 pm ET

All Democrats should be voting for Clinton

Tim   April 22nd, 2008 6:22 pm ET

Hillary can't wait to get her hands on this government to turn it over to special interest, so husband can make millions on speaking fees. What a joke!

What do you expect   April 22nd, 2008 6:21 pm ET

The only reason Hillary might win PA is because the voters here are SHEEP !!!! They LOVE to complain but keep voting the same crooked Politcos in and wonder why nothing changes. WAKE UP PA !!!!!!

DVS   April 22nd, 2008 6:21 pm ET

Must be because she has done such a stellar job of managing her campaign's finances!

Someone tell me what her economic credentials are again????????

Henry Miller, Cary, NC   April 22nd, 2008 6:20 pm ET

I was about to make some sarcastic comment about how dumb it would be for anyone concerned about the economy to vote for any tax-and-spend Democrat, but the reality is that the neo-cons are at least as bad–the only difference between the parties is what they waste the money on.

jones   April 22nd, 2008 6:20 pm ET

Way to go Hillary! We at least know what you're about, Obama is just plain scary in his evasiveness. To all of you turn coat Democrats in the Senate – are you are afraid to allow a woman to have the power simply because she'll do a better job? Women think differently (scientifically proven on MRIs) – they think BEFORE they act. I'm also sick and tired of all the whining about Hillary voting for the war – WE HAD NO CHOICE. How soon we forget the fear we felt when we could not pull our shocked faces from the TV screen…do you not remember wondering if the very soil you stood on would begin to crumble and shake beneath your feet? It did for those that died on September 11th.

Henry, NY   April 22nd, 2008 6:20 pm ET

Obama has the audacity to claim he is a change agent. What has he ever done to change anything? He hasn't been in the senate long enough to do anything and has done nothing to change the way Washington works. He is all talk and never takes hard positions that might come back to haunt him.

Hillary is more able to bring change to Washington. She knows how to work there and her policies are all for the good of the american people.

Disgusted American   April 22nd, 2008 6:19 pm ET

after 2000 & 2004 i thought america could sink no lower in our ineptness at picking our political leaders. apparently pennsylvania will prove me wrong. pennsylvanians say the economy is their biggest concern; they blame nafta, in part for their economic woes; clinton supported nafta; they vore for clinton………………….ARE YOU SERIOUS?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dina   April 22nd, 2008 6:18 pm ET

Clinton wants to freeze interest rates. She is NOT good for the economy. Any economist will tell you her plan would be a disaster.

MPG   April 22nd, 2008 6:18 pm ET

If we are to believe the exit polling so far in PA, it shows that Obama's comments may have possibly been so right on the nose that the PA voters are punishing him and themselves for such truthfulness. The fact that it "appears" that those worried about the economy are voting for Senator Clinton whose primary claim to fame is the experience she has as being co-president with her husband, whose policies may attribute noticably to the current economic/job woes experienced by many PA residents (not to mention the policies of George Bush)……and now the possible "Limbaugh Effect" of certain republicans doing something so digusting and unAmerican/unPatriotic as lying to try to rig the elections a certain way to make sure their ultimate candidate wins is also something we have to take into account.

I'm not saying necessarily that Obama is the better candidate, so much as I am saying that this is one time where one can definitely see the fallability of the polls – - and the naiveity (sp?) of some of the PA voters.

I stand corrected CNN   April 22nd, 2008 6:18 pm ET

Bill   April 22nd, 2008 6:17 pm ET

She will not be able to gain enough delegates to get past Obama. She has to win every state coming up by 60%+ in order to achieve this.
Give it up already.

John   April 22nd, 2008 6:17 pm ET

Her campaign is in the red, how is she best to run a country if she can't run her campaign financial problems.

Aman (Toronto)   April 22nd, 2008 6:17 pm ET

It could be me but how can some one say that economy is thier priority and yet the vote for Clinton! I could be wrong but she is the one who supported NAFTA and shipped your jobs overseas!

deb   April 22nd, 2008 6:16 pm ET

Thanks, Pennsylvania! Hillary is not only the better qualified person for this job she is also stronger! I really admire how well she takes all the crap the media and Obama supporters have flung her way since the beginning of this campaign. She's a very strong woman/person and will be a great leader. Obama can't take the heat. He gets flustered when he's up against the wall. How is he going to lead the most powerful country in the world if he can't take a little criticism!?? Hillary has shown over and over that she can let it go right by her. Go Hillary!

I repeat - Oh Yes   April 22nd, 2008 6:16 pm ET

Be Serios and Vote for Hillary!   April 22nd, 2008 6:16 pm ET

Hillary is not entertaning as Barack. But this is a presidential election not personality contest or American Ideal. Hillary is smart and well equiped to be a great president. Obama is naive, weak, and inexperienced. Be serious and vote for Hillary!

Eric   April 22nd, 2008 6:16 pm ET

Whatever the outcome of todays primary one thing is for sure. Hillary is a trooper and die hard winner. Although I have faith that today in Pennsylvania will prove her victory. Hillary cares about the common blue collar American which most of us are. Obama is a democratic elitist just like the Kennedy family. It amazes me that so many Democrats are too blind and ignorant to see that Obama has no experience!!!! Hillary has got the experience and the record to back it. Hillary is a true proud American who loves this country and will fight to the end for it. Its people like her that give Americans a good name.

Nick Lawson   April 22nd, 2008 6:15 pm ET

I am VERY concerned about those ( Including the News Media ) who are even considerring asking about Hilary Clinton get ting out of the race! If This is to be a real " Democracy " let the process take it's coarse. Even if I am not supporting her. I support the process! Don't take that away from us!

Does anyone believe that an ability to understand cashflow is a criteria for the leader of the United States of America? If so, then I'd urge people to think about who YOU would prefer managing income and expense for this country. I'll take the guy with $40 million in cash who hasn't had to borrow from himself, thanks.

gerard morei   April 22nd, 2008 6:15 pm ET

Hillary 2009!!!!

Jeremy   April 22nd, 2008 6:14 pm ET

Well, I've tried to argue this race with SOME elderly people and in my opinion this makes the elderly look bad.

I've heard comments suggesting they think he is a terrorist or that they don't know about voting for a black candidate. They were raised in a different time when blacks were not equals and they are quick to judge on things they do not understand, like the fact that one of his relatives was a muslim, does not make him one.

I actually heard someone say "Obama sounds like Osama"

I'm not suggesting that all elderly who vote hillary are ignorant. But I am seeing a lot of ingorance and moronic thought and it's disturbing.

I want to think of my elders as old and wise not feeble minded and ignorant. This is sad.

Why are you giving exit poll information out while the polls are still open? Isn't that against the rules…

John In San Diego   April 22nd, 2008 6:12 pm ET

Consider this, Hillary supporters. She can have the greatest "plan" for the economy ever concieveid, but her abrasive, polarizing, political acumen, will see anything she wants to do doomed becuase she will not have the support of legislators to implement anything. She's a divider, not a uniter, evident by this abrasive primary campaign, she's crippled the Dem. Party., divided it. Obama, eho has the same plans, has proven he can get the other side on board with his policies. Consider it and tell your girl to go home!

Wow! They blame NAFTA for the economic woes and then vote for the candidate who supported it. – Quite perplexing!

Perhaps the media isn't properly doing it's and spending too much time and energy on mud-slinging. (No offense CNN) Perhaps if the media had been frenzying around the issue like the economy instead of comments like "bitter" and "sniper-fire" this poll would read a lot differently.

Clinton's comment: "I have to win Pennsylvania."

Anybody see a pattern in her speeches: "I, I, I."

The woman has lost her mind and has also lost the nomination.

Goodbye you crazy bag lady Hillary.

Grif   April 22nd, 2008 6:03 pm ET
