Former president Jimmy Carter addressed the media in Jerusalem.

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania (CNN) — Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama told reporters that it was a “bad idea” for former President Jimmy Carter to meet with exiled militant Hamas leader Khalid Meshaal “without [Hamas] having recognized Israel or renounced terrorism or acknowledged previous agreements.”

“What we're seeing now is that even as President Carter suggests there is a breakthrough, you had some of the same old rhetoric coming out of Hamas representatives with regard to Israel,” Obama said during a stop at a Pittsburgh diner, referencing a statement made Monday by Meshaal that Hamas would not in fact recognize Israel.

“If we are clear about improving the day-to-day lives of Palestinians,” Obama said, “Then I think that will do more than anything to encourage Hamas to renounce violence, rather than simply sitting down with them.”

Is it a bad thing that the entire world will cheer the inauguration of President Barack Obama? Or would it be better for us if we continue to be universally despised?

I have an odd suspicion that if the world liked and respected us again through a president that is universally liked and respected, that somehow we would have far fewer enemies out there intent on harming us. But perhaps my logic is faulty.

Obama says talking to Hamas is bad…. yet Obama has repeatedly said he would talk to Iran's leader Ahmadinejad (who recently called Israel a filthy bacteria, questioned the holocost, and supports a Palestine free of the jews).

What's the difference, Obama?

Richard   April 22nd, 2008 3:16 pm ET

Well, well, well, It appears Obama must have finally gotten the poll back from his campaign that people are not happy with Carter. After he gets the poll then he makes a stand. Did you not already say that you would sit down with these types? Oh well more Obama spin.

Max Kil   April 22nd, 2008 3:17 pm ET

The good news is that Hamas recognizes Israel. The other administration did not manage to get that. Instead of critisizing Mr. Carter we need to capitalize on the fact that Hamas recognizes Israel.
I think he needs to go back to follow up with the deal. It is not a bad idea at all. Israel needs to be recognized by all the its neighbors.

obama's probably right, but, i have to give carter credit ,for trying.it's hard, for the u.s. to mediate ,between israel and palestine, because of our obvious bias towards israel.if we need to speak to the nation supporting hamas, that would be syria.obama has said he wouldn't be afraid,to meet with them.who knows?it's better than waiting for them to wreak havoc upon each other.

SENSIBLE CAPE COAL   April 22nd, 2008 3:20 pm ET

I never think it is A BAD IDEA to talk to those who disagree with you. It is not a sign of weakness but of strength and confidence. Even if it does not result in success, that is not a sufficient reason not to try

Sonia CA   April 22nd, 2008 3:21 pm ET

I don't understand WHY we have to defend always Israel?????? wait a minute……. we allow Israel to get nuclear bomb and no one protest about that, Iraq is on its way to get the same and we are shaking and upset???? why?? are the people from israel different than the Iraquis?? very unfair and very wrong.

Benjamin   April 22nd, 2008 3:21 pm ET

Why is this such a bad idea? According to Obama, he would meet with every single one of America's enemies and aggressors without ANY preconditions. According to Obama, the Iranian President can deny Isreal exists, deny the holocaust ever happened, can refuse to stop uranium enrichment and nuclear development, and still Obama would meet with him.

Dan, IL   April 22nd, 2008 3:23 pm ET

Wasn't it Obama's strategy to sit down and "talk" with a rogue country a few months ago? North Korea? Sensing a effort on his part to appear tough - what a surprise.

If elected, his foreign policy will be all over the board. As the nation's most liberal senator he has no set principles or moral guidelines in relation to life and death. His voting record proves this out.

Obama is wrong on this one…What have Bush and Israel achieved by not talking to Hamas, the democratically-elected government of Palestinian Authority? Absolutely nothing. More innocents on both side have died and there has been no progress towards peace.

Carter achieved more in one week than Rice has in four years!

Am I having a blonde moment or didn't Obama say in several of his
speeches that we should sit down and talk with these people? And
he was the one thtat was going to do just that.

Steve   April 22nd, 2008 3:36 pm ET

The problem I have with Obama saying this is where do you draw the line in who you meet wit hand who you don't? So you won't meet with Hamas, but the Iranian President (his name I'm not even going to attempt to spell) is OK to meet with. The same man who has shown bigotry to the same people that Hamas does. It just doesn't make sense to me.

***AMERICAN***   April 22nd, 2008 3:37 pm ET

Gabe Polson, The Woodlands,TX   April 22nd, 2008 3:37 pm ET

James Friel   April 22nd, 2008 3:38 pm ET

Bottom line, Obama does not have a clue about what to do about anything, if he wins the Democratic nomination. You have to wonder
if his view is his own or what his handlers tell him to say. To say
anything bad about Jimmy Carter and his efforts to talk to Hamas
show how ignorant he is. But he will talk to Hugo Chavez and the president of Iran,Duh! I just hope people see how shallow this man really is, not presidential material at all. People, you voted for
George Bush, do not be fooled again.

Kathleen   April 22nd, 2008 3:38 pm ET

I think all of you have it wrong about Obama. Obama just will not sit down and talk to our enemies at any point in time. There would have to be a means to justification for this to happen at all depending on the circumstances. His statement about Hamas proves this. Judgement is an important thing to consider before making the move to sit down and talk. Sometimes it is better not to. Other ways can result in a better outcome.

Richard   April 22nd, 2008 3:39 pm ET

Darth Vadik, CA   April 22nd, 2008 3:40 pm ET

No it wasn't,
Hamas called for a 10 year truce if they went back to the original borders, in a way for the first time having Hamas indirectly acknowledge Israel. Carter did in one day more than Bush and Codoleeza did 8 years. But what do I know?

70% of Isrealis wan to talk to Hamas, but the Neoconc of Israel, the Likud party, has everybody here thinking otherwise, but what the heck do I know?

Christina from Las Vegas   April 22nd, 2008 3:43 pm ET

I think Obama is saying that it was a bad idea for President Carter to meet with Hamas. President Carter uses the same old style rhetoric - same old way of playing the same old game.

Our relationships with the world, specially our enemies requires a new fresh perspective. One that is not based on color, money, oil…but on human beings needing to live in peace with each other.

PA, make a difference - vote for Obama…for a change….

Alonzo Demetrius   April 22nd, 2008 3:43 pm ET

B.O. has no idea how to govern in today's world. He has said he wanted to sit down and negotiate away all our enemies' concerns. Guess he didn't have HAMAS in mind?

Erin   April 22nd, 2008 3:45 pm ET

Wow some of you people are stupid. He said that what J. Carter did was probably not a good idea. And what Carter did was go have discussions with Hamas without the US government's endorsement. The outcome wasn't bad, but Careter was speaking on behalf of (but without endorsement of) the US, which makes the US government look weak.

Then again, can you imagine what might've happened if BUSH went to talk to Hamas? (shudder)

This is how things get mixed up in translations, Ahemdinajad called the Israeli government bacteria, not Israel, and that is a difference. He called for the destruction of the Israeli government not Israel. And while I don't condone the things Ahmedinajad has said, there isa a big difference between the wrong and the correct translation.

or we can keep doing what we've been doing for the last 60 years and keep excpecting different results.

…and didn't Carter also get Egypt to recognize Israel too, such a horrible man, yeah right, wake up sheepole.

It wasn't a bad idea to try for peace. But how can one negotiate peace when we've got people sable rattling in this country and making crazy threats like obliterating the world. I'm not calling any names, but they know who they are.

Independent   April 22nd, 2008 3:55 pm ET

For everyone who doesn't understand the difference between Hamas and Ahmedinejad - Hamas is a terrorist organization, and Iran is a country. We may not like the leader of the country, or the direction it is going in, but it is nonetheless a recognized nation.

Obama has said he is willing to meet with the leaders of countries with which the US doesn't have a good relationship. This is not the same as sitting down with a terrorist organization.

And if you people actually listened to what Obama said, he has always said that he wouldn't negotiate with Hamas or other terrorists.

Please, try to get a clue. It is really painful to read your uneducated posts on the subject.

Teresa W. of Newport Bch, CA   April 22nd, 2008 3:58 pm ET

It's o.k. Carter….McCain didn't do it…..Bush would've been a target them……And Clinton would have been booed the minute he stepped onto their soil.

You did a just and noble deed….I saw that you tried to reason and bring them together. Nobody else would not do what you did. I commend you for your efforts. To me you risked your life to speak for milllions of people. That took a lot of courage. He can truly say that he wasn't under any sniper fire.

Bill   April 22nd, 2008 4:03 pm ET

There has to be preparation before meeting. I heard Obama say that in debates. There is a sitting president that is supposed to be asked this question not Obama. Obama has a right to say it is wrong at this point since he doesn't know what the conditions are and what preparation if any carter had before he did so.
Obama all the way!

Jimmy Carter is placing more of a burden on the US than helping. He is not the current Presdient and seems he is thumping his nose to President Bush as if he knows what is best for us. We don't need more confusion. Did you see where the Iran leader wants Obama to win? Now why would that be? The terrorist world is trying to change America and our beliefs. The majority of us are Christians. I don't know about you, I am standing for my faith and will never ever change my mind. Does anyone remember 911? I don't want another wake-up call? And don't want to rub elbows with those who hate us and want to destroy us. I want a strong America and a strong defense. Elect McCain and you will sleep better at night.

tim from Ravenna, OH   April 22nd, 2008 4:12 pm ET

Isn't this the guy that stated he would meet with world leaders without any prerequisites. How many times can he be caught saying one thing and doing another before the people and the media start calling him on it. Every day he makes me feel a little more fearful that he would be more dangerous to America than the boob that is in office now.

Praetorian, Fort Myers   April 22nd, 2008 4:13 pm ET

Wow…he'd even bite the hand of one of his most influential supporters!!

Frankly Mr. Obama…what must happen is that ALL parties have to agree….that Israel should not have to give up ANY land that it conquered after being attacked by arab armies in 1967–except that land that it chooses to. Until the Palistinians, other Arab states–and terrorist wings–agree on that critical issue–there will never be peace no matter how much desired by either side.

When you are conquered after attacking a neighbor with your armies–that conquering neighbor has beaten you…and that land now belongs to the conqueror. They should have thought of that before they invaded in 1967!!

So far …we've never had a President with the fortitude to admit that. Not Carter..and certanily not Obama.

Ca Native   April 22nd, 2008 4:13 pm ET

Darth Vadik,

OHHHHHH thanks for the clarification!! I guess the people of Israel should quit worrying about Iran's quest for nuclear weapons, the anti-semetic rhetoric from Ahmedinejad, the clerics, and Palestinian sympathizers? Right - Iran would NEVER provide support to Hamas or other terrorist groups targeting Israel… right???

And to "INDEPENDENT" that says the difference between Hamas and Iran is that Hamas is a terrorist organization and Iran is a country. Uh-huh… Yeah because NO country would EVER wage war against Jewish people?

You Obama supporters are naive wet noodles.

Liz   April 22nd, 2008 4:13 pm ET

At least Carter is trying. The numbnuts in Washington just don't want to talk to anyone who doesn't share their point of view and I'm not sure you can go forward without all parties at the table. But of course, that's injecting a little common sense, which is sorely lacking with this regime. Have some faith Obama, Carter is a good man and he's been there before. Washington would hate it if he actually made inroads to the stalemate situation they have created.

Lewis   April 22nd, 2008 4:31 pm ET

People - Obama said he would meet with our enemies provided *at a minimum* certain preparatory gestures are made in return.

Read beyond the headlines. Obama is a smart man and speaks with a lot of nuanced statements.

nord   April 22nd, 2008 4:32 pm ET

Obama is doing nothing but acting like this was a bad idea, when in fact, he more than likely asked Carter to go over there to do prep work so that Obama can meet with Hamas when he's in office (if he even gets the nomination). After all, this is a guy who says he'll meet with North Korea, Cuba, Iran and all of our other enemies.

I agree with an earlier post that I read with regard to the Julie Nixon endorsement. "Obama has more tircks up his sleeve than Tricky Dick"….and there all dirty tricks.

My guess is CNN won't post this message because they publish only "THE GOOD" things about Obama, "THE BAD" things about Hillary…so guess that makes CNN, "AND THE UGLY".

Good luck America if Obama is the next President, we'll need it. We made the mistake of electing Bush (no experience) gave him a second term and now look at the mess we're in.

Let's not make the same mistake for the third time by electing Obama or McCain (the Bush wanna-bes)…Vote Hillary if we at least want to see our Country in one piece at the end of her 1st term. .

No McSame   April 22nd, 2008 4:35 pm ET

Obama please don't do a Clinton on us so early in the game. The man is trying to save lives the best way that he can.
Show them both the love of Christ Mr. Carter. Good Job

Mike   April 22nd, 2008 4:42 pm ET

Ok I actually think it is a good idea to talk to everyone. I don't see what's wrong with telling someone to their face, your stated policy towards the country. The worst that can happen is that nothing changes, but the upside is enormous. What I find troubling about this is that Obama is totally flip-flopping.

Mikey   April 22nd, 2008 4:49 pm ET

If President Clinton et al had not sat down with terrorists Adams, McGuinness, paramilitaries, et AL; we would never have had peace in Northern Ireland today. I think President Carter has shown great a great example of, and leadership and Statesmanship - it is only by keeping dialgue open, however, distasteful, can we hope to see peace in the Middle East. Diva do a little research…

The Palestine people have never had their own land or country since a very long time. The land has been in the hands of other countries or kingdoms. Quite frankly the Palestine people have been treated like our Native Americans by people of their own faith. Second of all, it was a mistake to give the Jews the land…

Hamas will only do this if Israel will give back the lands they have gained since the Six Day War in 1967. So pretty much Israel has to give up the Gaza Strip, West Bank and the Golan Heights. That will never happen and quite frankly I wouldn't trust Hamas. SO NO CARTER DIDN'T GET ANYTHING DONE…

It's strange to see people beating Obama up for this cause his Foreign Policy from day one has been horrible. Of course he said it wasn't a good idea. He says whatever is popular at the moment..

AND HE HAS SAID THAT MANY TIMES. HILLARY TOLD OBAMA, THAT ANY TALKS WITH OUR ENEMIES, SPECIFICALLY iRAN WOULD HAVE TO BE PRECEDED BY LOWER LEVEL DIPLOMATIC AND SECRET TALKS BETWEEN THE PARTIES. OBAMA TAKES THE OPPOSITE VIEW BY DIRECT TALKS WITHOUT PRELIMINARY NEGOTIATIONS. iT IS THE MOST OBVIOUS SIGN OF OBAMA'S INEXPERINCE IN FOREIGN POLICY . THAT AND OTHER SUBJECT OF HIS SPEECHES CAST A LOT OF DOUBT ON OBAMA'S QUESTIONABLE CREDENTIALS FOR PRESIDENT.
I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED THAT ALL THIS IS JUST GIVING THE REPUBLICANS MORE AMMUNITION TO DEFEAT OBAMA IN NOVEVMBER.

Charlie, Odenton, MD   April 22nd, 2008 5:33 pm ET

Barack, I will call him that because he is not worthy enough to be called Mr Obama, or President Obama (god help us), although Hamas is a "government known" terrorist organization, they do impact much of what happens in the Palestinian orgins. President Carter, has done more for bringing together people and organizations from around the world than most can imagine. He is a humanitarian and he is out to get the parties that need to be present there, and talking. Hamas is just another example. Sure its not necessarily the most popular thing, but it needs to be done. As does the American population, needs to realize that with Barack at the helm, expect more corruption in our government, high taexes for everyone, and most importantly a long long time before we ever see our USD (for those who dont know United States Dollar) be worth even considering on the open trade market.

I'm not an Obama supporter, but his position on Hamas has NEVER changed. He is exactly right in criticizing Carter's efforts!

After all, Hamas launched an attack on Israel the DAY AFTER Carter's first meeting with one of their leaders. And perhaps somebody can point out what exactly did Carter "achieve" with his meetings? Besides allowing Hamas murderers to make him look like an even bigger fool?

And a quick note to Diva from Pennsylvania: read some history. It may produce some intelligent opinions for a change.

Larry, West Covina CA   April 22nd, 2008 5:39 pm ET

Did Barack Obama say it was a "bad idea" of President Carter to talk with Hamas? If my memory serves me well, he said that we should talk to our adversaries. This Barack Obama character is just full of hot air!

Ca Native   April 22nd, 2008 5:41 pm ET

HMmmm… didn't congress recently vote to call Iran's elite guard a terrorist organization???

Yeah - let's sit down with Iran but shun Hamas. No hypocrisy when it supports the Obama campaign.

Praetorian, Fort Myers   April 22nd, 2008 5:43 pm ET

If the Palistinian people choose to elect terrorists as their leaders—then they will suffer the consequences. Perhaps next election–they will make wiser choices.

Our nations foreign policy and position on terrorist organizations should not alter..

We can still provide humanitarian services to the Palistinian people–but we should in no way negotiate with a gang of terrorists like Hamas–who have killed, or attempted to kill Americans, Israeli's and others in the name of their Jihad.

Kalifornia   April 22nd, 2008 5:44 pm ET

In a previous debate Obama said he would meet with our enemies without and preconditions.

Our enemies are licking their chops…

Tea Party   April 22nd, 2008 5:49 pm ET

Comedian Larry Miller said it best:
"The Palestinians want their own country. There's just one thing about that: there are no Palestinians. It's a made up word. Israel was called Palestine for two thousand years. Like 'Wiccan,' 'Palestinian' sounds ancient but is really a modern invention."

"Instead, let's call them what they are: 'Other Arabs From The Same General Area Who Are In Deep Denial About Never Being Able To Accomplish Anything In Life And Would Rather Wrap Themselves In The Seductive Melodrama Of Eternal Struggle And Death.'"

Hamas, the "Palestinians" and Ol' Moss-back Jimmy Carter are a pack of tools, an odd-fitting and functionally-useless pack of tools, at that.

Mike   April 22nd, 2008 5:50 pm ET

Obama is intelligent and insightfull. Carter was a silly old man when he was President and now he is just as silly and much older. About McBush's age?

Tinac   April 22nd, 2008 5:52 pm ET

Aren't there people in office that are taxes pay for who can go and have these meetings? Why Carter and why now?

Obama says talking to Hamas is bad…. yet Obama has repeatedly said he would talk to Iran's leader Ahmadinejad (who recently called Israel a filthy bacteria, questioned the holocost, and supports a Palestine free of the jews).

What's the difference, Obama?

The difference Native. Is that Hamas is a terror group and Iran is a major nation.

Young Rep   April 22nd, 2008 5:55 pm ET

Actually Hamas controls the Gaza Strip while the Fatah control the West Bank. They recently were fighting with each but have decided to have talks about the leadership of the PLO. Hamas has two wings political and military. Obama has flip floped on this issue..plain and simple. No matter what argument you make he has…. By the way Hamas did declare in Nov 2006 that all muslims should attack the U.S. and it is widely known that Hamas may have cells inside the United States…

Grif   April 22nd, 2008 5:55 pm ET

But Obama… Mr Carter Love's you…

kd   April 22nd, 2008 6:03 pm ET

What Obama said was that he does not have a problem with meeting with "world leaders" of various countries. Palestine is not a a recognize country.

IRAN is a recoginize country with an elected leader.

Chris you said it best - WAKE UP Folks and do your research!!!!!!

big_puppy   April 22nd, 2008 6:07 pm ET

Everyone wants Obama to answer of every remark made by any and everyone. Give us a break.

Sal in Phoenix   April 22nd, 2008 6:08 pm ET

Obama, you're a day late and a dollar short..why don't you try to come up with an idea of your own once in awhile..I think we're starting to catch on to your underhanded tactics.

Nathan   April 22nd, 2008 6:10 pm ET

And yet Obama is on the record as saying he will meet with Ahmenijad, as much of a terrorist as the leadership of HAMAS. Carter was humiliated in the mid-east this week and if Obama becomes President, the US will be humiliated for 4 years.

Zac   April 22nd, 2008 6:21 pm ET

WHAT?! This is out and out pandering from Obama. So much for meeting "without precondition." I am sorely disappointed. What's the point in talking at all, if you refuse to do it unless they already agree to what you're going to talk about!

Obama 08, even though I'm not as thrilled as I once was…

CM   April 22nd, 2008 6:24 pm ET

In my opinion, Hamas is a rebel group fighting for a cause (whatever that maybe). They do not represent a state/country; as a result, Obama is correct in his analysis. Carter should not have gone there to meet with their representatives. This type of discussion should occur through other channels.

Willing to meet with leaders of enemy states is different than meeting with representatives of a rebel group.

INDY PENDENT   April 22nd, 2008 6:27 pm ET

Who's Jimmy Carter?

Yes Carter   April 22nd, 2008 6:29 pm ET

Obama please do not play politics on this…Was it your idea we should meet with our friends and our enemies??

I support you and have donated several times to your campaign, but I don't agree with you on this. I understand you want to please the jewish by this talk but you will loose your self and your prinicples…

Carter is right and he is a brave maaaaaaaan

DJ, LA, CA   April 22nd, 2008 6:29 pm ET

He only SPOKE to them and was offered a 10 year truce. It wasn't an official visit.

Yes I'm sure they do have many supporters in the U.S. as there are many many thousands of Palestinians living here.

What do you people expect? They Palestinians lost their country and had it replaced by Israel. Israel must come to grips and finally offer a serious dialogue to offer a reasonable peace offer with the Palestinians.

INDY PENDENT   April 22nd, 2008 6:39 pm ET

Oh… that Jimmy Cater. I thought he was dead.

The truth   April 22nd, 2008 6:42 pm ET

No Obama…

Was it your idea to meet with our enemies… You need to fire your advisor who told you to say this…
We liked you because you challenged the status quo…I donated a lot of money and was excited about you, but if you can change your opinion this quickly then good bye
You may get a few jewish votes for this but you are going to loose millions of people who liked your ideas of improving America's image in the world. The core of this image will be solving the Israeli-Palestenian conflict…

democracy?   April 22nd, 2008 6:43 pm ET

Who said if Hillary wins the US will be internationally dispised? I came from a foreign country, got my Ph.d. in the US. I have lots of international friends, and we all hold high respect to Clintons. In fact, about 90% of us will vote for her. As to Obama, in our own language, he is a "Huyo" — a man who only uses words to incite people but lacks any record or ability to deliver. He didn't earn his today's position by any concrete work. Vote Hillary!

Al Bush   April 22nd, 2008 7:19 pm ET

Well it looks like I have arrived at the hater's blog. Obama said that he wld meet with "world leaders" about their bad behaviors and speak to the "world leaders" that we have issues with. He didn't say that he wld meet with the heads of every criminal enterprise. "world leaders" eg Kim jongill of north korea, akmid medejenadad of Iran, Juego Chavez of Venezuela. Leader who are considered in bush's little axis of evil.

For the republican can't preach about meeting with leaders b/c we still haven't found bin laden and guess what nobody wants to meet with us to try to locate him. In the mean while spending billion per day in Iraq. Guess what he may not be there. So chopping up the words of a man without seeing the whole picture is not only ignorant but un american. Because like bush we don't need all the fact just little pieces and parts to make a case. We don't need the whole puzzle just a little piece.

Stop the hate

Obama 08
