Blitzer: Could John Edwards finally pick a candidate?

An Edwards endorsement could make a difference.
An Edwards endorsement could make a difference.

(CNN) – With the North Carolina Democratic presidential primary coming up, the pressure will increase on former North Carolina Senator and Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards to endorse either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama.

A formal endorsement from Edwards and his wife, Elizabeth, potentially could make a difference in that May 6 primary, especially if they decide to go out and campaign aggressively throughout the state during their final days. Both Edwardses remain very popular among the state’s Democratic base.

There have been intriguing hints that both John and Elizabeth Edwards are leaning in favor of Clinton, but they have avoided any formal announcement. John Edwards has declined most interview requests since dropping out of the presidential contest.

Earlier this month, Elizabeth Edwards, a cancer survivor, said she supports Hillary Clinton’s health care plan over the one put forward by Barack Obama.

“In order to ensure that we have universal coverage, we need to say everybody has to join,” she told ABC News. “So, for that reason, the mandates that Sen. Clinton is talking about, I think are going to be more successful in achieving the goal.”

She added: “I just have more confidence in Sen. Clinton’s policies than Sen. Obama’s on this particular issue.”

Still, she and her husband have stopped short of offering any formal endorsement though some of their former campaign aides also seem to be leaning toward Clinton.

So let’s see if they change their minds and endorse a candidate before the primary. If they do, that could have a real impact.

No Edwards would not lose credibility – Edwards would actually get everyone off the Obama Kool aid drink their on and see that he is to new to be President!!

Wakeup America if this primary is over today – McCain will stil beat Obama!!! Rev. Wright and other things we have learned yet because we know nothing about Obama would hinder his chances in GE.

I hope Senator Edwards endorses Hillary as she is the one who could win the election for the Democrats. Thoughout the campaign, Hillary has been very substantive in speaking to the issues. She knows how to articulate her ideas and her positions on the issues, and she, as President, would know how to work with men and women in Congress, both Democrats and Republicans, in bringing about solutions to the various issues facing U.S. citizens today.

Edwards called Hillary "Bush/Cheney Lite" at some point.

If he endorses her, he really will be the phony he's always seemed to be.

Let's go Edwards! Join the team that can actually take on the GOP in the fall, not the one who "hopes" he can.

I don't believe that John Edwards would lose any credibility if he endorsed Hillary Clinton. Just because some of his followers are endorsing Obama doesn't really tell anyone that his decision would be the same. Why can't people just leave him alone and he will make up his mind when the time is right for him. The decision is for John Edwards and him alone. Of course, I would be disappointed if he chose Obama, but I truly believe that there might be a chance for endorsement of Senator Clinton. Either way, we have to wait on his decision. You know what they say about being too hasty. Will wait anxiously and hope he makes the right choice from his heart. GO HILLARY 08!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They'll go with Obama. Just trying to announce at the perfect time. Clinton wouldn't want Edwards as vice president, the spot he really wants now.

  11. so ironic

The ultimate irony for the Obama supporters (the smart, educated people) to ponder:

IF Obama is the democratic party nominee it will be because the Washington Insiders that he speaks against (Super delegates) GIVE it to him.

It will NOT be because he convinced the electorate with his inspiring message of hope and change.

Hillary Clinton has done as well without the hype of hope and the media bias and the celebrity bandwagon.

We all know he "MAY" say Obama....

Elizabeth Edwards however indicates she likes Hillary's Health care plan better (Due to it being similar to Johns).

Who knows and who cares. All the endorsements and defections over to camp Obama has done nothing but motivate the Clintons, you can't get rid of em and that's who we need as our President.

    Go Hillary!

I hope he endorses someone that isn't a liar and makes up stories to justify her a win, and a husband that thinks, because he helped people out they owe them something.

AS A NC VOTER, if Edwards endorses Clinton, WE WILL NOT FORGET!!!

    HE WILL LOSE SERIOUS CREDIBILITY.

EVEN IF HIS MEETING DID NOT GO WELL WITH OBAMA- It is hard to deny that Obama is better for this country than Clinton-even though they favor her healthcare policy.

I suspect John Edwards hasn't endorsed anyone yet because he knows if he endorses Clinton he will be accused of racism. Anyone who doesn't like Obama is accused of racism!!! The Obama people just cannot accept that some people just don't like him and don't want him to be the nominee or the president!

I think Edwards is trying to play it safe. He's leaning toward Clinton but probably wants a good cabinet position should Obama win. Clinton needs Edwards in North Carolina, Obama doesn't. It'll be interesting to see if he comes out. If Clinton has him she'll play him next week to get maximum impact.

Hillary has ridden on the coat tails of her husband's presidency. Obama, a virtually unkown, has ridden on Hope and Inspiration and carries a little more than half of the country. Why is that she cannot close the deal?
