Blitzer: Could John Edwards finally pick a candidate?

An Edwards endorsement could make a difference.
An Edwards endorsement could make a difference.

(CNN) – With the North Carolina Democratic presidential primary coming up, the pressure will increase on former North Carolina Senator and Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards to endorse either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama.

A formal endorsement from Edwards and his wife, Elizabeth, potentially could make a difference in that May 6 primary, especially if they decide to go out and campaign aggressively throughout the state during their final days. Both Edwardses remain very popular among the state’s Democratic base.

There have been intriguing hints that both John and Elizabeth Edwards are leaning in favor of Clinton, but they have avoided any formal announcement. John Edwards has declined most interview requests since dropping out of the presidential contest.

Earlier this month, Elizabeth Edwards, a cancer survivor, said she supports Hillary Clinton’s health care plan over the one put forward by Barack Obama.

“In order to ensure that we have universal coverage, we need to say everybody has to join,” she told ABC News. “So, for that reason, the mandates that Sen. Clinton is talking about, I think are going to be more successful in achieving the goal.”

She added: “I just have more confidence in Sen. Clinton’s policies than Sen. Obama’s on this particular issue.”

Still, she and her husband have stopped short of offering any formal endorsement though some of their former campaign aides also seem to be leaning toward Clinton.

So let’s see if they change their minds and endorse a candidate before the primary. If they do, that could have a real impact.

John should come out and endorse Barrack. Let Elizabeth, the non-super-delegate, endorse Hillary. I think John would be a strong VP candidate, but he needs to get off the fence already, and bring Al Gore with him!

BTW, I think the Hillary supporters are getting way too emotionally involved that they are blind to her slimy, say-anything, debate-anything tactics. There are going to be a lot of Hill-tears when she eventually doesn't get the nomination.

If Edwards endorses Clinton, it will damage his political future.

Edwards also benefits if Obama is taken down because it improves Edwards' chances in future primaries.

The right thing to do, John, is endorse Obama, even if it postpones your own shot at the WH for 8 more years.

Not only should he endorse her, but he should be her VP. What a great ticket that would make. He is a wonderful person and I would be so honored to have with us.

I hope that John Edwards comes out in support of Hillary Clinton. His campaign is more in line with Hillary's than Obama's. We do need universal health care for everyone.

WHO CARES? It's too late for Edwards to make an impact on anything...I was wondering, why you didn' even MENTION that Edwards' whole TEAM OF 49 meyers, lawers, businessmen + 3 congressmen endorsed Obama. in NC.. Tht is much more important than Edwards or his wife (Who is she in this race?) But for you it is not, because it is a BAD NEWS for your protege HRC!!

I very recently heard John Edwards speak at a fundraiser, and I left feeling that he leaned towards Obama. While he spoke evenly about both of their strengths, his rhetoric matched Obama's, by stating "we need a strong leader with a clear vision to lead us through so many issues plaguing the nation." Obama came out the very next day and said almost the exact same soundbite on the trail.

I hope he endorses Hillary, because she is the one to beat McCain. We do need a strong leader with a clear vision, but also one with the experience of having navigated the bureauracy in D.C.. Someone who has tried to push her healthcare plan through once before. If at first you don't succeed try try again. Hillary is tenacious and she is fighting hard for all the right reasons.

If Hillary supporters attack Obama's rhetoric, we do so, because we believe she is the ONE that can get the job done. When Obama supporters attack Hillary's character, watch out, we strengthen in droves. It is not a popularity contest that wins you the Whitehouse, as Bush proved in '04. Kerry couldn't seal the deal. Hillary is the REAL DEAL.

John don't make a mistake here. If you want a political career don't be a traitor and follow the Secretary Killer, Medal thrower, Mexican turn-coat on his own people and a big-mouthed woman PELOSI who has done absolutely nothing as speaker of the house. Certainly your not thinking Obama. I give you credit for having morse sense than that.

For sure , Mr. Edwards is leaning to Obama, otherwise it is much hard to believe that most of this aides would endorse Obama without consulting his opinion. But the problem is Mrs. Edwards, who might be leaning to Hillary because of health care plan, or the woman factor.

On the other hand, Edwards is calculating. If he endorses Obama and Obama finally win the NC, how much credit he would get as Obama is holding a big lead in the poll. If he endorses Clinton, well, it is a gamble and I don't think he would risk his political life to do so , especially when his campagne is all against Washington insider.

    So he will keep silence.

Can somebody please tell me what it is John Edwards has ever done to warrant such clout? He served one term in the Senate and has been serving his own interests ever since. The Clintons have criticized Sen Obama for being nothing more than an enigmatic speechwriter, but what exactly has Edwards accomplished and what about him or his lifestyle demonstrates his commitment to the poor and down-trodden? Certainly not getting a $400 haircut.

Who cares who Edwards endorses? He's a pretty face who has fooled some people but not all of them. Let the narcissist keep his endorsement to himself.

Jonh Edwards with not go with Hillary just because his wife likes Hillary's health plan.

Just because one person says they like her health plan doesn't mean they will support her!

To Hillary's supporters -– the race is over! Hillary can't win!
    Go Obama!

On the blogs I'm on, nearly all of Edwards's supporters have gotten behind Obama. Very few found anything they liked in Clinton. So I'd be surprised if Edwards broke ranks with his own people.
