Clyburn has been critical of both Clintons.
Clyburn has been critical of both Clintons.

(CNN) – The most powerful African-American in Congress again scolded former President Bill Clinton for comments he made over the course of the Democratic presidential race.

In an interview with the New York Times late Thursday, House Majority Whip James Clyburn called the former president's conduct "bizarre," and said several of Clinton's actions had deeply upset many African-Americans.

Clyburn told the newspaper that many African-Americans believed the Clintons were trying to damage Obama to the point where he could not be elected. He also made similar comments in an interview with Reuters Thursday.

"There are African Americans who have reached the decision that the Clintons know that she can’t win this," he told Reuters. "But they’re hell-bound to make it impossible for Obama to win.”

Speaking with the New York Times, Clyburn said such actions could lead to a longtime division between the former president and his once most reliable constituency.

“When he was going through his impeachment problems, it was the black community that bellied up to the bar,” Clyburn said. “I think black folks feel strongly that this is a strange way for President Clinton to show his appreciation.”

Speaking to reporters Friday, Obama said he does not believe in "irreparable breaches. "

"I am a big believer in reconciliation and redemption," he said. "This has been a fierce contest. I am confident, come August there are going to be a whole bunch of people standing on the stage with a lot of balloons and confetti raining down on the Democratic nominee and people are going to be excited about taking on John McCain in November."

Obama's camp starting the racial bs again , I see.

Lisa Gross   April 25th, 2008 10:21 am ET

I totally agree with what he just said! I am so disappointed in the Clintons. I had so much respect for them before all of this. I voted for Bill both times, now I cannot vote for Hillary out of dignity.

lars   April 25th, 2008 10:23 am ET

And the frightening thing is that the Clintons will steal
the nomination and continue their bizarre politics and behaviour
for the next eight years.

Brendan D, Niles, IL   April 25th, 2008 10:24 am ET

Bill Clinton has obliterated a stellar (and steadily improving, in the wake of George W. Bush) legacy in a little less than four months. Maybe he never really was all that great…

Michael   April 25th, 2008 10:24 am ET

I hope Clyburn's wrong about Hillary intending to sabotage Obama just enough that he'll lose in 2008 and she can come back in 2012, but my gut tells me Clyburn's right.

CB   April 25th, 2008 10:25 am ET

Hillary has lost it. Bill has lost it and I have two straight
jackets on hold. All in the name of power.

Sue   April 25th, 2008 10:25 am ET

I agree. I think he is acting bizarre but I've thought that since 1992.

Tony Z- MD   April 25th, 2008 10:25 am ET

Good job! Finally someone stated how when Bill needed African-Americans he was friendly. Now he thinks he does not his true colors are showing.

Eric-PA   April 25th, 2008 10:27 am ET

Bill Clinton was correct . Obama is a race-baiter and this is why this strong democrat will not vote for Obama if he wins the nomination.

Registered Independent   April 25th, 2008 10:27 am ET

Clinton wasnt talking about South Carolina political history as he claims. He was completely dismissing Obama's win, pretty much saying any black candidate could win there for simply being black.

George   April 25th, 2008 10:28 am ET

I agree that Bill Clinton is behaving irrationally, as well as unprofessionally. He can not use his wife to regain respect. He should be asheamed of his behavior. Representative Clyburn was right to call him out.

Dave   April 25th, 2008 10:28 am ET

The Clintons continue to say and do things to appeal to the largest portions of their constituency — uneducated people and those scared of African Americans. As we saw in Pennsylvania, a state with a lot of uneducated people and bigots, this works.

andrew s   April 25th, 2008 10:29 am ET

right on the point.

Kurt   April 25th, 2008 10:30 am ET

Does Clyburn realize he is using a drinking metaphor to describe the black community's support of Clinton? I do not think it is an apt comparison nor is it appropriate in this context. He is not paying the black community a compliment.

Karen in Cape Cod   April 25th, 2008 10:30 am ET

Please Mr. Clyburn, what about all the GOOD President Clinton did in office for ALL people in this country! I think ALL people should APPRECIATE our former President a little more and stop slamming him and Hillary!

Marshall in Nebraska   April 25th, 2008 10:31 am ET

Speaking the truth. I think Bill has lost a little in the last 8 years. He is not as slick.

KMAN   April 25th, 2008 10:32 am ET

We all know by now that NOTHING is ever Bill's fault … well, except for the stain on the blue dress. I can almost remember when I still had some respect for the Clintons, but what little remained has faded rapidly of late.

Obama will be President   April 25th, 2008 10:32 am ET

You think? The guy is sabotaging his wifes campaign…Do we really want him as our First Lady?

mama4obama   April 25th, 2008 10:33 am ET

I think all Americans of every ethnicity should be outraged. Hillary and Bill have been able to slither around for years. Its time Americans see them for who they really are.

Mark Cary, NC   April 25th, 2008 10:33 am ET

Funny. Rev. Wright reappears and now does the claim that the Clinton's are racist. Interesting.

Mike   April 25th, 2008 10:34 am ET

Bill… all of us know that this politics as usual… the media is putting spin on everything… Obama's camp is currently blaming the media for 30 second sound bites and taking things out of context…

Clyburn is a smart man… I do not understand why he is saying these things especially with Bill Clinton's history and all of the things he did for the black community… Clyburn should understand politics and the media!!!

I know from reading the full transcript in regards to what Bill was responding to… Bill told the media that they had played the race card and continue to spin his words… I can not believe the media is trying to label Bill Clinton as racist…

Randal NYC   April 25th, 2008 10:34 am ET

Bill and Hillary have used race but they are not racist. When Bill says "im not a racist" that is a way to pivot around the issue because we all know that he is not.
But that is not the issue.

This is why the Clintons are loosing respect, peole are not as dumb as they think.

Whatever the issue is, Clayburn bringing is just opening up the wound again.

jon   April 25th, 2008 10:34 am ET

this is just irrational. people need to stop whining.

isn't that what you're supposed to do in a presidential campaign? make your opponent unelectable?

Uncle Sam   April 25th, 2008 10:34 am ET

As an independent observer, it seems to me that there has been hyper-sensitivity to anything remotely racial in this election. I look forward to the day when our presidential candidates are judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

pat ny   April 25th, 2008 10:35 am ET

with 97% of all blacks voting for Obama, how can we say the Clintons are the racists here!

Kurt   April 25th, 2008 10:35 am ET

Does Clyburn realize he is using a drinking metaphor to describe the black community's support of Clinton? It is not an apt comparison and and the implications are not deserved.

Susan MO   April 25th, 2008 10:36 am ET

Stop the race issue………

We are ALL Americans!!!!

Lisa GA   April 25th, 2008 10:37 am ET

This just goes to show Bill is a liar just like his wife.. . I thought highly of them until lately… I would not cast my vote for Hillary,,, they have run a ridiculously campaign…. silly would be the better word!

Joseph   April 25th, 2008 10:38 am ET

It's about time someon took the Clintons to task for what they are putting the Democratic party through. Hillary can't win the pledged delegate vote, and is barely ahead in super-delegates. They are simply trying to ruin Obama's chances so that she can take another shot in four years.

Don   April 25th, 2008 10:39 am ET

So what ! I guess there is not aproblem with Obama accusing the Clinton's of racism just before heading to the south!

I think Obama is acting a little irresponsible for a honest politician.

1   April 25th, 2008 10:39 am ET

I happy someone finaly said it.

Kel from Auburn, AL   April 25th, 2008 10:39 am ET

Hillary said that? What an ignorant comment. This family has got to go. They had their time in history and the pages are turning to the Obama section now…

Farrell, Houston, Tx   April 25th, 2008 10:39 am ET

I don't have an opinion as to whether Bill Clinton's behavior is "bizzare" or what but this democrat race has become very disgusting. The back and forth name calling, the he said she said, the crying, the delegate count, the popular vote and the superdelegate's roll and nothing about the issues. Gas prices rising, food cost, global warming, high unemployment rate, immigration, and the Mideastern crisis are some of the real issues. This messy stuff has got to end and we are all sick and tired of it.

mazola   April 25th, 2008 10:40 am ET

This thing about the clintons is getting out of hand. They should be stopped now or that will be the end of the democratic party.

Ric   April 25th, 2008 10:40 am ET

Bill and Hillary Clinton are not going to change, they can't. Both of them knowing Hillary can't win, have started throwing out life lines to see they can catch.

Jim Shimmer   April 25th, 2008 10:40 am ET

I agree.. Billary think they own America!
They think they should automatically be made president and that it should not be earned…

How sick..

WILL STOOP TO ANY LOW TO WIN>>> SICK!!

Hillary supporter   April 25th, 2008 10:41 am ET

I believe they DID play the race card on Bill Clinton. He was only stating the truth. I did not hear Jesse Jackson complaining. I am sure he was proud to have won the state.

Sheila in OR   April 25th, 2008 10:41 am ET

2 years ago you could've never convinced me the Clintons were anything but good. Now I've seen an entirely different side to them.

I'm an Obama supporter, but think I'll go watch Bubba tonight when he comes to town, just for curiousity's sake. Interestingly enough, many people in our town really don't seem to want him around though. Maybe that's why they rented such an incredibly small venue (middle school gym…lol)

Bitter Woman in NYC   April 25th, 2008 10:41 am ET

I think the presidential candidates need to undergo psychological evaluations before getting into the Whitehouse.

Desiree   April 25th, 2008 10:42 am ET

Why doesn't he just say that he supports Sen Obama.

Margaret D   April 25th, 2008 10:43 am ET

President Clinton's comments are not *Bizarre* at all, he is telling the truth ,what is" Bizarre" is obama's relationship with Rev Wright for 20 years. Dont tell me he doesn't feel the same way his reverend does. Like Wright said "Obama is a politicain and = a hipocrit, talking about transparency? …….He needs a lot to learn….

Young & Educated 4 Obama   April 25th, 2008 10:44 am ET

Bizarre? Thats an Understatement! Dont forget Rev Wright paid Bill and Hillary a visit in the white house when they were having marital problems!
The clintons are Flip Flopers!!

Stop the Drama VOTE Obama!

Eli   April 25th, 2008 10:44 am ET

I dont think Clinton is acting anyway except standing up for himself. I believe there has been a certain group that has tried to twist things to cause an upset along racial lines. What they were trying to do WORKED and that is why we have this voting along racial lines.

tejasoutlaw   April 25th, 2008 10:44 am ET

This is just getting rediculas. Clinton says something that is true and he has to worry about the black community. This is black racism on the whites here. Obama and reverend Wright can say what ever they want about whites, but when Clinton calls Obama out for playing the race card he is going to be threatened by the black community.
Sounds to me like they want to justify their racism. Obama can get up and make a speach about typical white people, but Clinton can't call a spade a spade. Clinton has done more for blacks the Obama ever has and this is how the want to treat the man for speaking the truth.
They should be going after Obama for playing the race card. After all they now what is like to be discriminated against the most and should not wish it on anyone else. Instead it's like some sort of redemption.
Clyburn better watch what he says or this will turn into a race thing and that it not good for the black communities.

Janice, Aberdeen, SD   April 25th, 2008 10:44 am ET

Clyburn is right. My view of both the Clintons has gone downhill fast. What is with both of them? They've proven that to win this battle with Obama they will do practically anything. This isn't fighting for "us". This is fighting for "them".

They need to be attacking McCain like there is no tomorrow and showing how strong they would be against McCain by causing his poll numbers to drop big time - not by hurting Obama. To me, that's how they would demonstrate they deserve the super-delegate votes and the votes in the rest of the primaries.

AZM   April 25th, 2008 10:44 am ET

That's right…
The Clintons are rascists…. anyone who questions Obama about his past or anything other than praise's for him is a rascist… if Obama doesn't win in a landslide then America is rascist…. Obama lost PA cause those white people are racist…

Never mind the guy can't debate, answer a question, and has more than one affiliations with militant people…

But no… it's just cause he's black! Nice crutch…

FPJV   April 25th, 2008 10:44 am ET

Mr Clyburn is overstating the issue. It is only rational to expect that Bill Clinton will be offended and insulted by accusing him of racism. The Clintons have always been there for African Americans. Just as Lyndon Johnson was, like it or not. The African American community should not forget that. Who played and is playing the race card? to many of us it is clear that the Obama campaign is. All people are equal African American, white, whatever please stop making race an issue. Mr Clyburn and Mr Obama and his campaign must stop crying wolf everytime criticism comes their way. This really hurts African Americans as much as Reverend Wright does.

Shabazz   April 25th, 2008 10:44 am ET

It's about time Brother Clyburn step out and speak up. Obama WILL be the nominee for the Democrats IF everything is on the up and up. So the antics the Clintons have been pulling are very shameful. Another example how they (Clintons) will do anything to win even destroy their own party in the process!!

Clinton or McCain, but NEVER obama   April 25th, 2008 10:45 am ET

You need to sit down and shut up. People can see right through what you are trying to do.

Ms. Smith   April 25th, 2008 10:45 am ET

This article is no surprise, but quite predictable. Every single time that Hillary Clinton achieves a legitimate level of momentum, the Obama campaing, along with the national media, pull out an "anti-Bill" story. And, the most effect ones seem to relish in suggesting some foolish "hidden racist" commentary on the ex-President's part.

Seriously, do a research hit and you will find this statement to be accurate. I don't care what Clyburn says: Bill Clinton is no racist, nor is he imprudent in the manner in which he approaches dealing with Obama's chances for the general election. Most of this stuff above is just old, rehashed material, with Clyburn calling President Clinton's behavior bizarre. Well, I think Congressman Clyburn is bizarre and biased — so how's that for an analysis. Want to interview me.

Gosh — do you honestly believe fair-minded Americans believe that Bill Clinton is a racist? This is a joke!

Pat, Renton, Washington   April 25th, 2008 10:46 am ET

Listen carefully to what he has just said. Know the behavior of your Bill is reflected upon his wife, just as she wants to use her time as First Lady as experience.

My vote will not be cast for Clinton(s) - write-in. Do know, there is a greater possiblity that there is actually more Obama's supporters that will not vote Clinton.

max   April 25th, 2008 10:46 am ET

Finally, its seen how these two have played in the mud and we are sick of it, back when he was disgracing the USA as the worst president in history got impeached, the white community portrayed AAs of supporting him for his disgusting acts, now you support them in fact glorifying them……………… you think this is any better than Obama!!!! And he an Hillary stood side by side and straight out lied…people please……………… he will do the same again because you are giving them permission

Kyle   April 25th, 2008 10:47 am ET

It's nothing new from the clinton's rule book, do whatever it takes to win, say whatever the public wants to hear, so they "appear" as though they care. When in reality, they only care for themselves.
There's too much credit given today in "appearances"; If one appears to care that's all that matters. Truth has become a dirt word in Politics, and the Lie has over taken every aspect of American life.
Our founding fathers predicted this before the constitution was written, we have proved them right regrettably. And there is no sight of the truth ever regaining control, thanks to those like the clinton's.

Chinny   April 25th, 2008 10:47 am ET

I guess in America, it is always about race… no matter how hard we try to pretend or ignore, it always boils down to race :(. The Clintons just want to give minorities fish, but when minorities learn how to fish, clintons try to sink their fishing boats. "No you can't go out to fish on your own, until we say you are tried, tested and ready". Hypocrites. I have lost all respect for the clintons and I can't understand why anyone would vote for Hillary. Run a fair race. Doing anything to win is definitely not noble. Hope I don't get censored.

Anonymous   April 25th, 2008 10:47 am ET

THERE SURFACED A PICTURE OF THEN PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON WITH THE REV. WRIGHT UP VERY CLOSE, AND A LETTER FROM CLINTON THANKING HIM FOR HIS SUPPORT, BUT I NEVER SEE IT PRINTED, ON CNN OF FOX NEWS. COULD IT BE THAT THEY DON!T WANT THE WORLD TO KNOW HOW CLOSE ALL POLITICAL PARTIES WERE WITH THE REV. WRIGHT.

John McConnell   April 25th, 2008 10:47 am ET

Clyburn is correct: Bill Clinton's behavior is bizarre. In fact, he is acting just like a raging alcoholic. The irrational outbursts, the self-deception, and his physical appearance–bloated face & flushed complexion–are good indications that he has a bad drinking problem. There is also a family history of alcoholism, and the disease is genetic. Do we want an uncontrolled and uncontrollable drunk running amok in the White House so close to the nuclear trigger? It would be Dr. Strangelove in reality.

1man1vote   April 25th, 2008 10:47 am ET

No one is accusing the Clintons of overt racism, but rather fanning the flames of ignorance in people who are.

yoshi927   April 25th, 2008 10:47 am ET

Clyburn is totally wrong, it was Hannity and Fox News that stirred this up. They are hurting Obamas chance of winning, he had Fred Thompson talking about Obam last night. Not the Clinton's this is an effort to stop Hillary's momentum by another Obama supporter. If you can't see this then your blind. The Clinton's just happen to benefit the fact that Obama was not correctly vetted. If anything Clyburn is being racist and sexist attacking a white female candidate, did anyone stop to think about that. Let's rewind Obamas comment (typical white person) that did not nearly draw the attention of the sniper fire comment. Lets be transparent and not bring up race in this race. It's getting uglier by the minute and all the supporters need to let the candidates dictate the outcome.

Trina   April 25th, 2008 10:48 am ET

get out of the ghetto and do something good for your life.
not just whine ane whine and hope this Obama is going to solve all of your problems. It's not going to happen. Everybody is equal in America. So stop whining and waiting for hand out. I'm so sick of Obama. He didn't do a darn thing to better Chicago politics like he promised. And now he promised to better US politics? Dream on, people. I want a doer, no talker.

Julious   April 25th, 2008 10:49 am ET

We all know Mrs Clinton winning the Democratic nomination will be one of the biggest upsets or call it “camebacks” in the history of the presidentials primaries.
I do not think the Clintons do not know this, they know it and they will equally be shocked if Hillary were to be nominated.
So why is she still running and above all, why all the negative campagning?
Their main job at the moment is to destroy Obama!!!
Why?
That’s the million dollar question!
Come on….Bill had been something of a cult figure among Black people the world over, he know’s this and he enjoys it…..forgotten the “first black president” tag?
So why someone else come to replace him……Noooo!
Secondly, Obama or Hilary were set for the history books…….the Clintons are going for it’s me or no history this year……
The last view is that, they are now representing or holding the interest of that group of people think “Nooooo America is not ready for a black president, nooo, not a black man”. Take a closer look at Hillary droping tears just before the New Hampshire vote and listen to her attentively and judge for yourself if she is part of this group or just pleading to them.

God Bless America

MD in OK   April 25th, 2008 10:49 am ET

I think Bill has done too many appearances. Maybe he's hoping she'll choose him as her running mate. Anyway, I know he wants to see Hillary win, but he needs to step back and let HER run as the democratic candidate.

Randal NYC   April 25th, 2008 10:49 am ET

The funny thing is that untill Bill started running his mouth, black people were still supporting Hillary. Its easy to stop supporting someone when they are acting like a jerk.

David Ruck   April 25th, 2008 10:49 am ET

Bill's behavior is schizophrenic. But how is that different from any other Bill Clinton we've known? MY GOODNESS PEOPLE!!?? How is this family still involved in American politics? Don't we deserve better than Bush's tax break's for the Rich and the Clintons' endless pursuit of absolute power? Shame in the news media for covering these issues like these people are normal and their arguments are valid.

Obama gets smeared while focusing on the issues. Do a story about how they run these smear campaigns. Give us a good, in-depth analysis of BOTH sides' tactics. That would be good, news-worthy reporting. Instead of focusing on this "is it too late for Hillary" or "are we still talking about Obama's minister?"

As long as you keep asking questions like the latter, you ARE still talking about his minister.

Focus now on how the Reverend White visited the Clinton White House as well… or is that not good journalism?

Larry   April 25th, 2008 10:49 am ET

Mr. Clyburn needs to take a deep breath, and go sit down. Clinton is being who he is…a rough and tumble politician. Obama is already not electable…Clinton did not do it. Obama did it. He has self-destructed. Clyburn takes himself far too seriously.

Ron   April 25th, 2008 10:49 am ET

Neutral ??? Really??? He is an OBAMA surrogate and as in the past the OBAMA people raising the race card under the pretext its the Clintons' issues

Joshua College Station Texas   April 25th, 2008 10:50 am ET

This is how crazy Bill becomes when Hillary is the one publicly in charge. She always did exert influence even when he was Prez, but at least back then he was still at the head of the canoe. Now that she is leading, he doesn't know seem to know how to follow. Too bad for them but good for us, neither sees the huge waterfall of defeat they are coming up on. Bye bye, Spinillary and Bill! Don't worry–all your loyal Clintonheads and Carvillites will be there at the bottom to pick you up (but probably not all those you've now terribly offended and disgusted, like blacks, whites, Obama voters, independent and republican crossover voters, superdelegates, etc., etc., etc…).

both of them…

But who would have tought that Bill would be more annoying that Hillary!!!

Instead of saying "honney this thing is over, let's go home lying in wait for another time"; nop, he is feeding her tenacious annoyance.

Even if she wins all the 408 delegates left, because she only have 1586 now, she can't get the 2025 needed. Mitt Romney for the GOP did the math and he did see the reality and then moved on. Can somebody help her other than Bill to see clearly????

Michael Lorton, Virginia   April 25th, 2008 10:50 am ET

It proves the concept that basic tool for the manipulation of reality is the manipulation of words. If you can control the meaning of words, you can control the people who must use the words…..the central dogma of a pollitican.

Bjorn Iversen   April 25th, 2008 10:50 am ET

I think it is naive not to believe the race card is not an issue. I am certain that when we go to the polls and vote, in the quite and private time, most Americans will not vote for a black potential president. Most people will either vote for John McCain or not at all. I can't possibly see how Obama can win in the general election. What is going on now is just a Democratic party showdown. Do I have a racist attitude? No, but a realistic attitude of what will take place if Obama is the Democratic candidate. It is a waste of an opportunity for the party to take back the White House.

no faith no law   April 25th, 2008 10:51 am ET

CLIntons are no faith no law people…

they dont beleive in anything…dont have morals and principle. They has a psycho way of thinking wich is that " what they do is right or becomes right at the very moment they decide to do it ".

That 's why they say something, and the day after something else. They twist the reality in their favor and that's alright to them.

That s a basing characteristics of psycho personnality.

wwf   April 25th, 2008 10:51 am ET

Again, you have Bill inserting foot and then blaming Obama. I agree totally with the article. I believe that if THEY can't have the Presidentcy, they are going to make sure that Obama can't win in the fall. That way they can say,"See", "We told you he could not win".

Kay   April 25th, 2008 10:51 am ET

It is sad that this primary has stirred such a racial divide in OUR country. We are not as divided as OUR politics suggest. We must look past color and gender. We need change in this country and that means moving past OUR divides to strengthen OUR future.

For Clyburn to suggest that President Clinton owes the black community something for backing him during impeachment is absurd. If that's true, then Governor Richardson certainly owes the President more for appointing him to his cabinet and paving the way for him to go on to the governorship, presidential candidate, etc…

The fairy tale analogy and the Jesse Jackson comment are based in fact and are fair game and are not in any way, shape, or form racist or insensitive in nature.

Clyburn is a washed up, bitter old man whose interpretations only serve to fuel the deep divide between blacks and whites in this nation.

important issue   April 25th, 2008 10:52 am ET

If Obama's campaign had said that Clinton was trying to use the "Gender card" against them it would have been rehashed time and time again by the Clintons, and the media. I read about President Clinton's comments on the same day as the Pennsylvania Primary and then never heard anything else about it.

I love the fact that Obama is trying to take the high road during his campaign, but just once I would like to see him give Hillary a little taste of her own medicine.

Justin, Chicago   April 25th, 2008 10:52 am ET

Bill Clinton is trying anything he can to win for his wife. Obama is playing the "nice guy" so there are topics he cannot touch. Hillary's side is not restricted that way so they can play every dirty trick available.

John in NC   April 25th, 2008 10:52 am ET

It was Bill Clinton's personal attacks against Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton's manipulative "You never . . ." remarks, "if looks could kill" stares and "slum-lord" accusations that began my retreat from the Clinton camp. When Obama won South Carolina by doubling up on both Clinton and Edwards, I knew I had found a winner. Next, Hillary claimed victory in the unofficial Florida primary and I knew I had made the right decision to abandon her and support Obama. Soon, I fully grasped the Obama campaign message: America needs to be better than what the Clintons represent. America needs a new direction and Obama is the only candidate going "my way."

Rick in California   April 25th, 2008 10:52 am ET

Bill Clinton craves the spotlight. He'll never take a back seat position and that is why his wife can't be president. America does not need 4 more years of Bubba Clinton.

Marty   April 25th, 2008 10:52 am ET

If these African Americans keep making comments about race it is only going to hurt Obama which is fine with me. I am for Hillary.

David, Charlotte, NC   April 25th, 2008 10:52 am ET

I've observed Clyburn for years. His behavior has always been considered bizarre. He is only attempting to distance black voters from Hillary and for that he should be ashamed.

Molly   April 25th, 2008 10:52 am ET

A racist is a racist know matter what color race nationality or gender they are. Everyone should look to their own heart to see if they are a racist. Just a tipical white woman's thought

F Rahman   April 25th, 2008 10:53 am ET

I don't think either Bill or Hillary Clinton has to apologize to anyone. Both of them have worked tirelessly for African Americans for several decades and it is a shame that less than 10% of them are supporting Hillary. As a resident of Illinois, there is nothing concrete that Senator Obama has done for anyone of any race.

Chuck in Alabama   April 25th, 2008 10:53 am ET

What a WEAK shot at trying to deflect attention away from Reverend Wright's "comming out."

Hillary '08, '12

Chris   April 25th, 2008 10:53 am ET

Bill day is coming, maybe sooner than he thinks, if billary is not the nominee, Bill is out of there. The only reason oh Bill been there this long, is because she needed his name, for the black vote. Not to say it's helping. Maybe for those old senoirs, that don't know there but from there head. Believe me It's gonna be Pay Back for Bill.
You will read about it. Ha Ha Ha! What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

Mary, Chicago   April 25th, 2008 10:53 am ET

Who is playing the race card? I guess I had better ask John Lewis.

Left and Gone   April 25th, 2008 10:54 am ET

Why is it when Reverend Wright speaks his ridiculous blather, it is a matter of context, and when Bill Clinton makes statements that are far less offensive and outrageous, he is acting "bizarre"?

Barb Canada   April 25th, 2008 10:54 am ET

What Bill said is true, the media has always been known to show snipets of conversations, isn't that the complaint Obama made about his own pastor?? If this wasn't a race issue, there is now way in Hell Obama would have 90 to 95% of the black vote! If Obama was a white, hardly known candidate, do you think he would have 90 + percent of the White vote??

Sick of Her from Another W/Woman   April 25th, 2008 10:54 am ET

Bill Clinton is a sick man and Hillary is just as sick if not more so. They are both consumed by greed and power but Hillary is also a bitter scorned woman.

She will never win the GE if she wins the nomination with her crazy antics. Her negatives are enormous and growing daily.

SLKWLY   April 25th, 2008 10:55 am ET

What Bill and hillary are showing us is exactly what the "other side" has been accusing them of all along—they will say or doanything to win. Or as most folks see it, showing everyone your 'real colors'. If Hillary either continues her tactics and regardless of wheter or not she manages to break and create the rules as she goes along and gets the nomination, as one who doesn't like to speak for millions of people, I would say its a fair bet that she would not get what the media calls the 'balck vote in November.

Sure, her percentages maybe higher than McCain, for obvious reasons, but turnout will be extremely low for her, and for the democratic party, you can not win without the strong showing of the most loyal constituency you have. But, maybe this is a wake-up to that constituency, which i am a part of, that when it comes down to it, as far as the black community goes, the VIPs in both parties really don't think that much of us until they need something from us, so maybe we should start looking at the third party candidates, or even republicans alot more. That includes not only in the presidential contests, but every two years from the congressional contests and every six for the senate contests as well….

joseph bizumo   April 25th, 2008 10:55 am ET

i"m writting to express my saddest feeling about the former president
Bill Clinton "s behaviour that upsets even a lot of africans including
Nelson Madela who publicly showed support during his impeachment
believing that he is somebody who peaple of colour can trust.
Bill has consistently being playing a racal card right from the begining
in order to transmogrify Obama"s candidacy in the eyes of white voters. The congressman is obsolutely right as to his behaviour, shameful

hope   April 25th, 2008 10:55 am ET

Look who is talking racism!!!
Congressman Clyburn you are lost. Pres. Clinton have done so much for African American and now such back bitting is disgusting.
Obama and his followers including Congressman Clyburn are one racial issues and playing on race card , public is not blind nor hard of hearing.
When Sen. Obama used expression "typical white women" I was offended along with many American.
Just count how many African American voted for white women(Hillary)
and how many white people voted for black man (Obama) than judge aobout racism.Tis is not firs time Congressman Clyburn talking racism and I now have enough. All you playing on the race card shuold stop and play fair game.

Chris - Moreno Valley, Ca   April 25th, 2008 10:55 am ET

In Bills own words “We were talking about South Carolina political history and this was used out of context and twisted for political purposes by the Obama campaign to try to breed resentment elsewhere,"

If Bill doesn't want his words taken out context then why do the Billary team take Obama's out of context and twist them for political purposes

Joseph Johnson   April 25th, 2008 10:55 am ET

It would be nice if other democrats would stop making Bill Clinton out to be a racist. Obama's people have made this race about race. It makes me upset with I hear these types of comments and make me want to vote republican in the fall.

Paul   April 25th, 2008 10:56 am ET

I am sick to death of hearing abour race from the Obama people. The only rasist cries around here is from Obama,

Enough from the media and this race issue, drop it and get back to the issues!

Marilyn Bryan   April 25th, 2008 10:57 am ET

It seems that every faction, be it the media, political party, or the
candidates themselves interpret whatever is said in the way
they wish to to take the most advantageous spin. Everyone is
guilty. I have never needed a media person to tell me what I
heard, read, or thought. Hopefully, there are enough people
who can see, hear and think for themselves to make intelligent
decisions on their own without the input of the biased of
whatever sort. One person's "bizarre" may make perfect sense
to another. The continual twisting of semantics is what is truly
bizarre.

Barb Canada   April 25th, 2008 10:57 am ET

Neutral = strongly critical? How?

Burt   April 25th, 2008 10:57 am ET

ok lets be honest here, its all about race. if not OB wuld not be getting 90% of the black vote. How else could a person with little exp be the frontrunner for the bigest job in the world.

Kim   April 25th, 2008 10:57 am ET

The Clintons are out-of-touch, greedy dinosaurs. Let us make way for a new generation of ideas and leadership.

sasha kando   April 25th, 2008 10:58 am ET

It is distressing, to say the least, to see the ways the Clintons have gone. Any hope of a "legacy" has gone down into the gutter with them. A staunch democrat for decades, we have been disgusted by their tactics and Hillary is doing no favors to women by reinforcing the stereotype of a vindictive woman poisoning everything around her. Clintons are every bit as trashy as the stuff they are doing, and history will show that they have destroyed themselves as well as the party, for the sake of personal ambitions. We should fear for the chances of the democrats in November. By the way, she has also diminished the chances for any other women presidential candidate in the near future. But after all, if they were all to be like her, who needs a woman president???

Carl, Atlanta   April 25th, 2008 10:58 am ET

Clyburn is right; Bill Clinton is behaving bizzarely, but it has nothing to do with black vs. White. The race card issue is a Clinton campaign strategy. They are trying to appeal to racists. A part of Bill Clinton's mind truly believes that HE, not Hillary is running for president. In many refrences to Hillary, he has answered with the pronouns "I" and "we", but not with "she." He's been called down several times for this by the party leadership, but he always reverts back. This should be a matter of grave concern for all Amerians. It indicates that Bill will be attempting to run Hillary's White House, should she be elected. She has shown that she has no control over him, so we must expect that he will attempt to execute the Offce of President himself, albeit in the background.

get real   April 25th, 2008 10:58 am ET

Funny that the Clintons talk about the "fairy tales" of others when they themselves seem to prefer sci-fi, trying to use Jedi mind tricks on the voters by trying to convince them that they never said the things they did, and if they did, they were misquoted, they misspoke, or someone took it out of context. Or, as in Chelsea's case, it's not our business (what happened to that thick skin y'all said you needed?). I'm an older white female - supposedly Hil's key demographic - but as much as I'd love to see a woman in the White House, I would prefer to see ANY woman in the White House who isn't a sociopathic Clinton. Superdelegates, put this strident, lying harpie out of America's misery. Go Obama!

LeeRoy, Nottingham (UK)   April 25th, 2008 10:58 am ET

In difficulties the Obama camp uses the racial card to obtain the vote of the blacks and later they say that it's the Clinton camp which uses this strategy. They are hypocritical in the camp Obama and I hope that Clinton will win in Indiana.

Ohio Citizen   April 25th, 2008 10:58 am ET

I don't see how Clinton would be viable in 2012. If Obama doesn't win this year I would hope he would run again in 2012. The Clintons are yesterday's power couple. There time has past.

Wynter (NH)   April 25th, 2008 10:58 am ET

Clyburn is the one acting bizarre! The comments about the Obama win in SC were correct, but not poltically correct. They pertained simply to demographics. Clyburn is the one getting his facts wrong and distorting the statements to give his buddy Obama some help.

These Obama Surrogates need to stop making attacks "for" Obama and let him make these statements himself. But of course, if Obama didn't keep "asking" his surrogates to take the bullet for him he wouldn't be able to stay clean in this campaign.

Simply saying,
Wynter

obsp   April 25th, 2008 10:58 am ET

I know Obama has had bad press the last couple of days for the first time in this campaign. So what happens, here comes the undeclared super delegate (yea right) to turn the attention away from him. I hope the media does not let him get away with this as he did in SC. He went the the NYT's then as he is doing now.

Reid   April 25th, 2008 10:58 am ET

Texas, California, New Mexico, Arizona, and Florida were all won by Hillary because they have used the brown/black race card to win those states. They also used it to woo the poor uneducated white vote in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Michigan. you know they will use it AGAIN, to try and win Indiana. They are absolutely shameless!

Kenneth M   April 25th, 2008 10:58 am ET

I like the use of the word Bizzar. Its not racist, but it is dismissive of Obamas (not the community) efforts. Hard to tell what Clinton is trying to do with these statements. They dont help the Dems, Hillary, or the voters.

Rosa   April 25th, 2008 10:59 am ET

Both Clintons are proving they will do anything to get THAT WOMAN in office. I once backed them, but now I am appalled by the tactics they use. Hillary comes off as a shrill harpy and he is basically a handler. As far as Chelsea goes I wonder if she has any backbone. The Bosnia Story a misspeak? NO a LIE.

Jose'   April 25th, 2008 10:59 am ET

Funny how the rest of the country is beginning to see the Clintons for what many of us have seen for 15 years.

They will lie, cheat and steal to get into power.

Sad part is, Obama is just as bad.

@americans   April 25th, 2008 10:59 am ET

bizarre is an understatement!

bill clinton is a clown!

Bobbi   April 25th, 2008 10:59 am ET

While I agree with Clyburn, I am glad that the Clintons showed their true colors sooner than later. It's not about unifying the country and healing old wounds that warrant treatment; rather, for them, it's more important for them to regain control. I was one of the many African-Americans who supported them during the Clinton Administration and seriously debated my stance on this election regarding Hillary. It wasn't necessary for me that they pander to the Black community; I just wanted them to be fair and honest. Ethically-sound was too much to ask, I suppose. I am an unwavering supporter of Barack Obama.

Don   April 25th, 2008 10:59 am ET

I wish I had the time to conduct a study of what these Democraps said about Bill during his Presidency. I recall it was the GOP that questioned his behavior at the time and even led an effort to impeach President Bizzaro . . . my, my, my how times have changed . . . NOT ! ! !

unfinished1   April 25th, 2008 10:59 am ET

judi in NJ   April 25th, 2008 11:00 am ET

I think this will be a desaster for Hillary if she wins the primary.
She will never, and I mean never, win in a national election because
the Clintons have abused the black comunity. The Clintons have a very big job of bridge building when this is over and it may be too little too late.

E. L.   April 25th, 2008 11:00 am ET

Funny how the Clintons yell foul when their words are taken out of context then when Obama made the same mistake i.e. the bitter comments, they take it and try to damage obama calling him an elitist. It's a stretch to take you words out of context and call you a racist Bill? Just like Hillary taking Obama's words and running around calling him Elitist trying to gain political points. Don't feel so good when they doing it to you huh? Hypocrites to the third power.

Florida Girl   April 25th, 2008 11:01 am ET

It is unfortunate that Bill Clinton had to stir up in a negative way the worst thing that Americans have had to face, racism. Someone ran an old ad from way back where the white woman did not get the job and the black women stole the job. Now that is the type of rhetoric that Bill Clinton is sprewing from state to state and it is unneccessary. When I look at the national polls that CNN posts, I see that Obama is beating McCain and Hillary is not. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that the Republicans are waiting on that old steal meat so that they can ravish it for dinner. In Obama they can only say what someone else has said about him. Wise up Dems! If you do not wise up then you will put McBush right back in the White House for 4 more years OBAMA 08

DemDude   April 25th, 2008 11:01 am ET

Or is he acting bizarre like a fox……?

Bill Clinton would walk around nude, covered in confectionary sugar if he thought it would get votes (sorry for the image.) And while he's played 'bad cop' to test out a few strategies for Hill, don't underestimate him.

Jean   April 25th, 2008 11:01 am ET

Did you not see Clinton's lip move…Of course he is lying

Sylvia   April 25th, 2008 11:01 am ET

It's about time somebody spoke up about this whole insanity. Bill Clinton was never for the black people and now we know he has taken them for a ride. There should be protest going on about him all over. If it was someone other than Bill Clinton, people would be jumping all over him.

Another Superdelegate!

maya   April 25th, 2008 11:01 am ET

WHAT? You Mr Clyburn are the one who is bizarre (and inappropriate).

How about sticking with facts (Clintons have done much for AA) instead of spreading ridiculous scandalous rumors (Hillary trying to make Obama unelectable so she can run in 2012). Something you supposedly "heard on the House Floor"

Disgusting.

Obama is such a whiner and has made himself unelectable all on his own.

Jamie   April 25th, 2008 11:01 am ET

We all know that both Hillary and Bill are doing whatever possible to hurt Obama's chances for selfish reasons. Hillary claims the ONLY thing that matters is that the democrats win the general election, which is false. If that were true, she'd realize there is a much greater chance that Obama will be our delegate and she would stop tearing the party down. Her intentions are for her and Bill to get back into the white house at the expense of anything.

Would the top democrats please intervene so we can make sure we win come November?

J. McCaskill, MS   April 25th, 2008 11:02 am ET

I'm so sick of this. Clyburn needs to really get a life. Anybody who thinks Former President Clinton or Hillary Clinton are racists, are out in left field. He did more to lift the Black community than any President in the last 40 years. He is not called the first black President for nothing. This is a black citizen who supports Hillary Clinton and does not think Bill Clinton has been acting bizarre. Speak for yourself Clyburn.

Fed up!   April 25th, 2008 11:02 am ET

I agree with Mr Clyburn. Bill made a comment that should not have been made. I feel it was to distract voters. I was a big fan of the Clintons until finding out the true Clintons through this campaign.
I would'nt give Hillary a penny (donation). She is a very negative woman and can't balance a budget. I hate when people attack people and not discuss issues that people are concern with - apparently she love distraction also. Maybe Vice President, but not the President. That's Obama job!!! I do believe in change. Tell Bill to stop taking things so personally. Stop putting his foot in his mouth.

By the way she did not win PA in double digits. Get it right folks - elementary math.

Kelvin Marshall   April 25th, 2008 11:02 am ET

I think it is so sad the way our former President has responded to the African American community. I get the feeling that he never really cared about the African American community. From here on, he will be seen in a different light by those who supported him so aggressively over the years.

I do not understand how people can ignore the fact that Bill Clinton disgraced his Presidency and the country with his affairs while President.
Hillary seems to have turned a blind eye to the fact, which makes me wonder how far will she go to maintain the power she has as his wife.
She and Bill continue to fabricate stories and degrade Obama and McCain, while touting the "holier-then-thou" attitude.
Surely to put them back in the White House is a dishonor!!

Jeff   April 25th, 2008 11:04 am ET

Well……it's true!! The Clintons will do anything, use anybody, any race, to further their own prosperity. People are used like "throw away" towels by the clintons. Jeff   April 25th, 2008 11:07 am ET

Its only Bizzare if you take the attacks on Obama personally. Too many people are trying to live vicariously through Obama's campaign, and as such are taking attacks against Obama as attacks against themselves.

Thats what is emerging as the real problem with Obama. It is becoming/has become a cult of personality, Obama is seen as some sort of sacred prophet and deified being. His followers protect him as such, never questioning his policies or beliefs because to do so is heresay against the scripture of 'change'.

And that frankly scares me.

Collie   April 25th, 2008 11:08 am ET

lol. Bill Clinton is definitely acting bizarre. He scares me nowadays.

Olander   April 25th, 2008 11:10 am ET

I have been saying for sometime that Clinton is trying to position herself for 2012. In the process she is trying ensure that Obama will not win in November. Why else would she continue on with her campaign when she know that she is not going to win.

There must be another contest in the Carolina's. Why is it racist to say Obama gets the vote of more African Americans because of his background? It is certainly true that Clinton is more likely to get the vote of women, or McCain from veterans. There is more to an honest discussion of race than acknowledging white racism.

Andrea Texas   April 25th, 2008 11:17 am ET

Let's not do a 360 on this story. The objective is to potray Mr Obama as a victim. People need to quit making excuse after excuse for voting for him instead of Senator Clinton.

We are proud of you, Senator Clinton

Anson   April 25th, 2008 11:17 am ET

I said it before I will say much stronger now that I will never vote for Clinton, and I will not stay home. Even If I'm sick and as long as my last strenght permits, I will go out and vote for McCain if Hillary is nominated. She is evil! She has destroyed the democratic party to the point it would take more than eight years to repare the domage she caused. We will not get together, we will not get united, Hillary needs to go. I stood by Bill Clinton before, I used to be close to him, it used to be…

More Clinton cunning. More Clinton guile.

gggchapelhill   April 25th, 2008 11:18 am ET

Clyburn's scurrilous behavior is what is bizarre. Once again a democrat relying on GOP talking points to smear the Clintons. Clyburn should be ashamed. HIs feigned neutrality is an insult, he is and always has been an Obama shill. His once lofty reputation is now in tatters as are those of many people who have thrown their weight behind the Obama campaign which will go down in history as having destroyed the Democratic party.

last laugh   April 25th, 2008 11:18 am ET

I think Clyburn hasn't really added anything to the discussion - it is like beating a dead horse. At this point the man is just trying to stay in the news. I am over it. How come the open letter from Maya Angelou isn't part of the ticker?

Bubba Max   April 25th, 2008 11:18 am ET

William Clinton is showing he is a racist down deep.

Johnson   April 25th, 2008 11:18 am ET

No one asks if Clinton can get the black vote but people ask Obama if he can get the white vote. Doesn't make sense to me. We clearly have a divide in the democratic party thats going to take some months to get it together. we need to end this race so that the healing can begin.

AJ-Philly   April 25th, 2008 11:18 am ET

Bizarre is absolutely correct.

Tim from Canada   April 25th, 2008 11:19 am ET

The more I watch your process and the way people believe the Clintons the more I like our process for elections in Canada. Really Monica Lewenski, Hillary's failed Health Care, Hillary's Whitewater fiasco and lies, Hillary's misspoken words, Hillary and Bill should exit satge left.

Rohn G. Kansas City, MO   April 25th, 2008 11:19 am ET

The Clintons says that Obama can not win in November without her base. However, Clinton can win without Obama's base. If Clinton can not win the African American vote, she will lose in November. Do the Clintons think that say anything and do anything and African Americans will support them?

Obama '08

Kathryn   April 25th, 2008 11:20 am ET

Congressman Clyburn makes a good case. It seems the Clinton's have forgotten the entire party, if not the country, with their negativity and "politics". I think they need to get out of the kitchen and work to heal the hurt we are all feeling. It is time to support the winner, Barack Obama.

Dina from Clinton, WI   April 25th, 2008 11:20 am ET

I used to be a Clinton fan. but after the way both Clintons have used the race card, I would never vote for either of them. that is old politics: to say anything to be elected, to use a group of people for your own advantage and then stab them in the back. Hillary thinks she should be president because of the past. we need change. we need something better. GO OBAMA!

Mike   April 25th, 2008 11:21 am ET

Bill Clinton is the expert on twisted words and context………. Mr. that depends on what the definition of "is" is!!!!!

Bh In Phoenix   April 25th, 2008 11:21 am ET

Bill Clinton is demonstrating his chameleon-like character. He has forgotten what Clyburn has said and has turned his back on the Balck community.

Sue   April 25th, 2008 11:21 am ET

It's so sad that Bill Clinton had not come out against the negative ads in NC. I fear this behavior is harming the Democrats. He once was a great leader.

Go Obama go!!!!

love2008   April 25th, 2008 11:21 am ET

Sounds to me thats what he is trying to say. He is setting the stage for his announcement. Wont be so shocked.

Get Real   April 25th, 2008 11:21 am ET

Mr. Clyburn and all the remaining African American super delegate needs to send the "Clinton's" a message by endorsing OBama for president…this will shut the clinton down and send them back to New York.

I for one, as an AA…..have not, did not and do not think highly of the Clintons…..

CR   April 25th, 2008 11:22 am ET

I second DaveNC's plea. This is no time to act as if you're sitting on a fence when you've actually put your feet on the ground.

mary   April 25th, 2008 11:22 am ET

No need to put in words what is clear to everyone to see. Poor Bill. Sad, really.

patrcia   April 25th, 2008 11:23 am ET

ECHEWEOZO   April 25th, 2008 11:23 am ET

God punish the clintons

AB   April 25th, 2008 11:24 am ET

So what.

britney spears   April 25th, 2008 11:24 am ET

The Clinton's scorched earth strategy makes me sick. They should be ashamed of their behavior in the last two months. Have they considered what their future is going to look like when they eventually lose? They're losing more and more credibility and respect by the day.

darrell   April 25th, 2008 11:24 am ET

Bill Clinton is a victim of his own ego. He speaks just to hear himself talk..
Lets get this over with in NC and Indiana. It's time to put the Clintons egos to sleep.

Joann   April 25th, 2008 11:25 am ET

Rep. Clyburn, is exactly correct in what he is saying. Please endorse Senator Obama for president. All the superdelgates shoud do the same. No one owes the Clintons!

fred   April 25th, 2008 11:25 am ET

Look, he points his finger also!!

katchicago   April 25th, 2008 11:25 am ET

Mr. Clyburn will you take the lead and endorse Obama for the 2008 election. It time for a change in American and it starts at the White House.
