The Obama campaign has asked for an investigation into two unofficial Web sites.

WASHINGTON (CNN) –
Lawyers for the Barack Obama campaign have asked the Justice Department to investigate two unofficial web sites that, until late this week, invited people to "Donate to Barack Obama for President 2008."

The Web sites — named donateooobama.org and donatetobarackobama.com — were operated by a group calling itself "Concerned Citizens for Obama." The first was advertised as a sponsored link on Google searches for "Barack Obama," appearing alongside Obama's official campaign web site.

As of Friday afternoon, the sites displayed nothing but a 'for sale' notice. But screengrabs taken by CNN earlier this week show what appears to be an official Obama campaign logo, a photo of the candidate, and an invitation to donate up to $2300 — the maximum contribution allowed by a single donor to a political committee during a primary campaign.

In a letter dated April 24, Obama campaign lawyer Robert Bauer wrote to the Department of Justice asking for an investigation.

"These activities … appear clearly intended to deceive supporters of Barack Obama into believing they are contributing funds to our Committee," Bauer wrote.

The letter, addressed to the Chief of the Public Integrity section and provided to CNN by the Obama campaign, asks the Department of Justice to "initiate an immediate investigation of Concerned Citizens and the operation of these web sites."

The sites are registered to Lou Kheriaty, a resident of Bellingham, Washington.

Reached by phone Wednesday, Mr. Kheriaty described himself as an Internet developer and Obama supporter. Mr. Kheriaty said he didn't believe the web sites were misleading, pointing to a banner that informed readers they were donating to “Concerned Citizens for Obama.”

There is no record of the group being registered with the Federal Election Commission.

FEC records show Kheriaty donated to George W. Bush in 2004. A search of domain records shows he also owns a number of URLs, including donatetogiuliani.com and donatetothompson.com, as well as anti-Hillary Clinton domain names including hillaryrevealed.net.

After a brief conversation with CNN Wednesday, repeated attempts to contact Mr. Kheriaty have gone unanswered.

Kenneth Gross, an elections lawyer, said the site donatetoobama.org is "engaging in highly regulated activity with a number of landmines depending on how he's spending the money." He added: "It creates confusion at the very least."

aah .. it's so ugly even to see what BO fans are joking at.. it just shows the character BO fans have.. yuk..looks like a childlike gibberish.

and 99 percent of blacks favoring BO is never because of race.. never. it's because of his other qualities which blind BO supporters have seen and no one else.
at least I don't see any other thing than his race.. A person is known by his company .. same goes for BO as well and many are clearly visible which BO is defending now and many more will be exposed with time.

mitch from ark, did you see how low and dirty supporters Obama has? You, Obama supporters are lower than fungus and villains. Obama team is trying to escape from the Wright's trouble, so bring out something to blame Hillary, they are wrong, Hillary is not a person who lower Obama supporters think. Do you remember Obama staff made 70 second anti-Hillary video? Obama's supporters are clever with computer, they know how to trick this campaign, that's why I will never vote Obama if he gets Nomination. McCain is more Presidential candidate than Obama and Mrs. McCain is more like First Lady than cruel Michelle. I don't trust Obama and his advisors at all. Actually Obama team is playing the game unfairly. Hillary 2008.

These sites are like OBAMA, a liar, deceiver and crook, so why not take him for a cleaning, Some one needs to wash him and REV Wright of their filthy minds. They need to wake up no one owes them a darn thing. You can't blame this on Hillary like you try to do. Michigan and Florida votes need to count as is. Everyone of the candidates had choices of their names being on the ballots. They all were on the Florida ballot. Too bad Obama withdrew his off the Michigan one. Too bad how sad dumbbutt! Is he reallywhat you want running the country. I certainly don't in any office of the government. His suppporters are the worst racist I've ever seen. HILLARY 08

As has been reported on several I repeat several occasions 90+% of blacks are voting for Obama. Many because he is black. 55% of Women are voting for Hillary based on several different issues. Get over it already and turn the page. Vote for who is the best for the job not who has your skin color.

With all the economic downturn,HD is wondering why people should contribute to Hillary campaign money.Reverse the whole question to why the people should contribute to Obama and yet he is not going to win?????

No doubt this screams of another Obama scam and blame issue. We need to surely ensure this is not blamed on Hillary as usual.

Yes, this nation probably does need a womans touch but not Hillary's. She is far too untrustworthy and self serving to ever represent me. I am first a democrat and second an Obama supporter. I am not willing to cut off my nose to spite my face.
Even if I have to hold my nose and vote for Hillary I will. I do not want 4 more years of our children dying in Iraq, Iran or where ever the Republicans will send them. I want a stronger dollar, affordable health care, and gasoline that is not $4 a gallon.
We will not get that from any Republican.
Please Democrats vote for you values not your candidate.

Hey, this subject got high jacked. Some people turned this into a hate mongering opportunity.
First of all, I cannot believe that the Clintons would be taking such a big risk and steal the money from Obama (that will come out anyway). But what makes me wonder is, that she was the one who had all the money to start with and now her campaign is broke. So much for her "experience". Obviously she cannot even manage a campaign, let alone a super budget of this country. With the economy in dire straits, poor U.S. of America if she manages to bully herself into the Presidency.
I am a 62 year old white woman, but not senile enough to follow her blind. No, I've been listening to both of them and decided, hands down, that Obama is the less experienced but the more capable and trustworthy person to do the job.

Obama get his campagin money from Libya thru intermediaries in Chicago. Ask Obama how's the 13th district of Chicago he represented when he was a state legislator? Him and Rezko did a good job lining up their pockets.

Don't worry Obama supporters, Hillary supporters wil vote for McCain in general election.

Too bad for the DNC, many registered democrats will leave their party and become independent voters. Where would DNC get their money?

I wouldn't put it past Hillary because she is un-American. She will say and do anything to win this election. She is a selfish, self-centered low down skunk of a person who will try to sabotage this election so she can win in 2012.

And the numbers do not add up for Obama to win the nomination either, so 4th grade math or not, we do not have a winner. Obama better tend to his affairs in Indiana first. A loss in Indiana will end his run, supers will have to go to Hillary if he can not win a big state next to his home state. 4th grade math shows that he can't win enough electoral vote to compete in the fall. Super's will have to go toHillary for any shot at the white house.

Vanessa   April 25th, 2008 8:28 pm ET

I think we ought to take Senator Clinton at her word. She said in a speech today that we should treat this campaign like a job interview. Well, if you lie on your resume in a job quest you typically don't get the job. No matter how good you are, employers tend not to hire someone they know has lied.

I see so many women on here make statements such as "the White House needs a 'Woman's Touch'" and other sexist remarks, so it begs the question…it's ok for women to vote for Hillary because she is a woman, but it's wrong for black people to vote for Obama because he is black (did we forget he is half-white, also)? So only black people are voting on a non-issue? Women are strictly voting on the issues? And who did the black people vote for in 1992, 1996, 2000, and 2004, when no black candidates were running? Don't tell me they didn't vote either…because they did.

Isn't this a double standard? It's two demographics of people voting on something other than the ISSUES, right?

Face it, they are both generalizations. Not all black people are voting for Obama and not all women are voting for Hillary. Vote on the issues, if we can ever hear about them. Do your own research!

McCain/Hillary Ticket   April 25th, 2008 8:22 pm ET

Be strong Barack, even though Hillary and McCain are double teaming you. Hillary doesn't have anything to lose because she already lost the election, and McCain wants another war. Of course McCain will not talk about war because it's a lost cause, so he's going to talk about silly things, such as Barack being an elitist. I don't think he is, especially next to Mr. Beer King, but if he is so what. I'll take an elitist any day than a warmongering wimp who will allow his campaign to be racist for his own selfish goals.

John McCain doesn't need to go anywhere near the White House or American soldiers will be doomed. He will want an even longer war, and a new war with Iran.

Stefanie   April 25th, 2008 8:21 pm ET

PA_Hill-fan: $10 million in a day? We don't need charity! We get $40+ million a month CONSISTENTLY! Guaranteed, even with the little windfall, Obama will still out-fundraise her in April.

Terri, FL   April 25th, 2008 8:17 pm ET

I think we are increasingly seeing who is a strong candidate and who is not. The politics of win-at-all-cost spin the story to make themselves look good and their opponents look bad. This is the policy of the Clintons and John McCain. I want a different America. The reason people did not know how to run against Barack is because he is not average. They had to find a pastor, go through 30 years of sermons and select the one that is the most offensive. I don't think any pastor, black, white, green could stand up to that test.

Barack still has my vote. He is the best candidate America has seen in a very long time. I like him.

I just had a scary thought. Do you folks think that the Clinton fundraiser may have known something about this scam, and this was the reason for him defecting to Sen. Obama's camp??? It is just a scary thought that occurred to me. I really hope that I am wrong!

Nikole   April 25th, 2008 8:05 pm ET

RIC—Don't play me small. I have been supporting Obama since before he decided to run, by signing a petition asking him to run. Black people get a chance to vote for a capable, black candidate, and we are racist for doing that? Your racism argument would have merit if he weren't such a GREAT candidate. White people have ruled around here since the beginning, are all of you racist for not having ever voted for a minority? Give me a break.

David   April 25th, 2008 8:05 pm ET

Ilona Proud Canadian   April 25th, 2008 8:02 pm ET

I don't know what to say to this new mess. Was Hillary's campaign behind this? maybe, but we really don't know. She did boast of making $10million over the Internet in 24 hours. I really hope that whoever was behind this scam is caught, and I don't mean the person who was actually responsible for the websites, but the people behind them. This has got to be more than a simple scam. And guys please don't be too hard on Griff and the others who are obvious Hillary supporters, they just can't help themselves, their adoration of Hillary has caused them to lose sight of the big picture.

I strongly appreciate the action taken by Senator Obama by moving ahead and helping the DNC and his general election activities. Unless we have all forgotten our basic arithmetic from the 4th grade, the numbers do not add up for Senator Clinton to win the Democratic nomination. So instead of wasting time on petty issues, Senator Obama has taken the high road again. Way to go!

Annamica, OH   April 25th, 2008 8:00 pm ET

Shame on you Hillary, you dont need to run a decent campaign, you want us to believe the you will run the country better than McCain or Obama ? I want either McCain or Obama to be the president. Ask for $5 to lure people in then make $10? These swindlers are at work; brillant! No wonder the Clinton fundraiser left her campaign and joined Obama's.

DH   April 25th, 2008 6:49 pm ET

As a bellingham WA resident, I hope this fool gets sued out the door for messing with obama's campaign.

ratgurl   April 25th, 2008 6:48 pm ET

MB, leave Grif alone, he's obviously overdosed. Again.

MULU   April 25th, 2008 6:47 pm ET

What a stupid remark by Grif. Are you a lunatic? Obama is giving and will countinue to give Hillary undeserved respect because he is a man of honor. Not your typical Hillary if you know what I mean!!

Young & Educated 4 Obama   April 25th, 2008 6:47 pm ET

GRIF: If you haven't noticed Sen. Obama is Married and has 2 little girls! As the saying goes "Its best to be quiet n have people think ur an idiot than to open your mouth and prove it!"
Im sure if I looked deeper I would not be surprised to find Hillary behind the web site tryin to snatch some of O's donation cus she is in deep deep debt!
Thank god I actually typed in Sen. Obama'a address so I know my several donations went to the right place!

Why not?????   April 25th, 2008 6:47 pm ET

Wonder how many Obama-bots got ripped off? Hope it was a s#@$ load. LMAO Wonder how many are donating to the paulvclinton site. I checked it out and found a spot to donate to this Peter Paul guy. I'm too old to fall for these kind of gimmics. I donate to Hillary because I believe she is the best person for the job. I have never donated to any candidate before, and will never donate to Obama. Maybe McCain to help beat Obama. It could be money well spent…

Montana is Obama Country   April 25th, 2008 6:45 pm ET

It's probably a scam from the Hillary Camp and the link actually goes to her site. That was how she could raise as much money as she "said" (fishy) she said she raised. It was people thinking they were donate to Barack and $$ was going to Hillary's campaign..

Funny thought - I just can't believe people would donate to a debt filled campaign sinking it way on the hell-bent-for-election- ship….

Yes… We… Can..

Go Obama   April 25th, 2008 6:45 pm ET

This is terrible……

mitch from ark.   April 25th, 2008 6:44 pm ET

i bet the clintons are behind it.

eric from canada   April 25th, 2008 6:43 pm ET

GOOD IDEA

Obatala   April 25th, 2008 6:43 pm ET

I am sure we can guess who is behind this……….

she will do anything, and I mean anything to sabotage Senator Obama,

with technology the way it is, it should not be hard to find out who is behind it,
the difficulty is , will they say it if they find out who ………….

never trust the clintons never never

NANCY   April 25th, 2008 6:39 pm ET

As a member of WisconsinforObama, I received solicitation for Hillary Clinton - that - on the surface, looked like fund-raising for Obama. I reported it, but that was before the Wisconsin primary. So it looks like this has been going on for a while!

Tjaye   April 25th, 2008 6:38 pm ET

Donate Barack TO Obama????

And people still sent money? HELLOOO?? Must be Hillary supporters.

LOL

Hillary   April 25th, 2008 6:35 pm ET

BREAKING NEWS: Hillary is making money off of Barack by setting up a fake web-site….Okay it's a stretch, but just a fun prediction :)

DefinitelyDem   April 25th, 2008 6:33 pm ET

The guy previously sponged off the Republican party & now sees financial opportunity in the Dems…. opportunist? Parasite? You decide.

MB   April 25th, 2008 6:31 pm ET

Grif- April 25th, 2008 6:25 pm ET

Obama! Hillary Clinton, is a few year's older than you… Respect you don't have for Women….

What you talking about?

Truthteller   April 25th, 2008 6:30 pm ET

The picture you inserted into the article says "Donate Barack To Obama", not "Donate To Barack Obama". It's totally backwards. Was that the website's typo??

Pavan   April 25th, 2008 6:29 pm ET

While Obama is gettting robbed of his donations, Hillary is trying to entice more people on to her website with the statement 'Contribute $5 now'. But when you actually go to the website, you cannot contribute anything less than $10. Typicall HIllary tactics……

Emmanuel   April 25th, 2008 6:27 pm ET

Its Hillary! It has to be! Thief!

Former Marine   April 25th, 2008 6:27 pm ET

May be it was set by the Billary's since they were out of funds last week.

aliou salam FL   April 25th, 2008 6:27 pm ET

I pray there is no one behind this one connected to any candidate or any party. that would be a shame.

are we going to see any more deceptions in this election.

It appears everyone wants a piece of Obama.

Delaware   April 25th, 2008 6:26 pm ET

Go after them faker. This was not Barack Obama's website. They were trying to fool people and they need to bring them to justice.

Grif   April 25th, 2008 6:25 pm ET

Obama! Hillary Clinton, is a few year's older than you… Respect you don't have for Women…. The Future will tell. Web Site's??? You need to be aware of you're own Insite's…

HD   April 25th, 2008 6:23 pm ET

Someone is trying to make a quick buck by fooling innocent people. What a shame.

I still don't get how people who can't pay their mortgages or who are angry about rising gas prices can contribute money to the Hillary campaign knowing that she does not have a chance to win this election.

She was $15 million in debt last week. What makes me concerned is that the Clintons are worth hundreds of MILLIONS of dollars and broke wal-mart democrats are paying them. Crazy.

Democrats Rule   April 25th, 2008 6:21 pm ET

My goodness - talk about no lines at all. This guy thinks he can take people's money because it is clear they are donating to "concerned citizens" and not to Senator Obama??? Sigh………….
