Watch Sen. Obama play some basketball in Indiana Friday night. (AP Photo)

KOKOMO, Indiana (AP) — For Barack Obama, figuring out how to cap a long campaign day in basketball-crazy Indiana was a no-brainer — you shoot some hoops.

After a noisy campaign rally, he donned sweat pants and a "USMC" shirt for a little action on the courts, with no ordinary companions. His 3-on-3 team included Alison Bales, a member of the
WNBA's Indiana Fever.

Some area high-schoolers also took part.

He kept up with the younger competitors, but at one point joked with medics standing by that they might be needed.

And he proved to be effective, scoring four baskets that included a nifty left-handed three-pointer. He grabbed four rebounds and stole a couple.

His team won 15-5.

right!….if just had more experience that 3 years in congress

A USMC shirt? How dare him? Something like that must be earned and to me he'll never do.

Jack in ND   April 26th, 2008 10:11 am ET

A well deserved break from all the sleaze.

Nice to see you out of a tie. It's springtime now (though you wouldn't know it looking out the window this morning here)…time to dress more casually on the stump.

Shannon   April 26th, 2008 10:11 am ET

instead of playing basketball or bowling, I would like to know why Obama voted to give big oil huge tax cuts while we pay 3.45 a gallon for gas. He was out yesterday slamming the profits of big oil, while forgetting to mention that he voted for the most disgraceful bill ever. This bill gave big oil huge tax breaks, while they are making record profits. Talk about pandering, I wonder what big oil promised him. Enough with the politics of hope and change, it has such a sleazy feel to it.

Shameful but helpful, it's this kind of bias that turns people off and makes them vote for Hillary. Real news are talking about Wrights interview, What can one say but president Hillary R.Clinton or McCain

Obama is wearing a USMC tee shirt, can you imagine what the obama supporters would say if Hillary wore It

WE KNEW THIS WAS PLANNED. IT WAS REPORTED BEFORE THAT HE WAS GOING TO PLAY THESE PEOPLE. SO IT WAS NOT A SPUR OF THE MOMENT THING. IT WAS A POLITICAL DECISION (THAT'S ALL). PLEASE STOP PRETENDING MR. OBAMA.

HILLARY 08!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Julie MN   April 26th, 2008 10:19 am ET

I watched part of the rally. I didnt find it noisy.I found Obama to be a little out of it. He also agreed to a debate on patriotism.

I would like to ask Mr.obama why is he blocking the MI and FL votes? He would have to have them in November, now they will go republican.

Also why is Howard Dean refusing to refer complaint from Florida superdelagate to rules committee?

And Obama campaign is about unity, now thanks to the bias DNC, the republicans, moderate democrates, and some independents, will be voting Republican in the fall.

Obamas change is not something to look forward to! It would be the end of the U.S as we know it. This would be quite clear if the msm would do their job.

bill pike   April 26th, 2008 10:20 am ET

being from southern illinois when all the great teams like Ky. and Indiana had southern illinois players I think this is great. Think, one day some of those kids will talk about playing BB with the president. wow. Makes me want to get out my BB shoes and shoot a few hoops.

Hillary is the candidate for geezers, radical feminists and the psuedo-illiterates who long ago lost hope.

I would like to know how the Clinton campaign can possibly say Obama is not electable. They say the republicans will bring out a whole mess of things to chalenge his character, to chalenge his loyalty to America,
This thinking is ludicrous. Hillary has been doing this very same thing for months and look where it has gotten her!
She is looking for any way possible to defeat Obama, even if it destroys the democrat party.
Let us hope the McCain campaign uses her strategy against Obama.
I don't think they will, because they are smart enough to realize dirty politics turns people off.

Texas for Barack Obama   April 26th, 2008 10:28 am ET

Barack Obama is going to be one of our greatest Presiden't in history.
This is a time in history that we can't afford to let go by. We need someone that is for the American people and not for their personal gain. Hillary still can't tell the truth, her campaign is always in trouble financially. Do you want Bill Cliinton to live on Pennsylvania again for 4 more years? How can she run the country? Hillary agreed not to count MIchigan and Florida because they didn't matter. She signed a statement not to include them. Now she has them added in her count.
Hillary changes the rules when it fits her situation.

Vote Barack Obama in North Carolina and Indiana.
God Bless the USA

This shows how our future President would be with his fellow Americans. He don't mind getting dirty with us. Not like the Clintons who only get dirty when it comes to politics. Now we have these cops that have been found not guilty, we will have the Rev. Wrights and the Al Sharpton speaking about hate again. This wold has gone out of control. People voted for Hillary because she is white and they can't see a black man in the White House. Though I think that Rev. Wright explained himself very well, they will not let him off the hook because most whites do not want to remember that it was criminals that the British sent over to America to settle. We have had slavery and seperation between blacks and whites. If we don't get over this, then we will only be our worst enemy.
I am glad that Obama has a chance to become the next President of the United States. Maybe we can move past skin color and start the healing.

Obama 08

Another "bowling" photo op? And heh don't forget to check out the USMC shirt….Naa that was just a coincidence. He sure is fed up with the old style politics isn't he? It is just uncanny how this ;man can pretend to be above it all while his campaign runs the same old style chicago type election. HIllary could have kicked his butt on this field too….but he would be to afraid to have her on the court. Gosh I hope I wasn't being racist. When McCain wins maybe Obama can coach little league. That is where he belongs.

FACT: OBAMA VOTED FOR CHENEY'S ENERGY BILL. HILLARY VOTED AGAINST IT.

Marc Tacoma, Wash   April 26th, 2008 10:42 am ET

The Clintons have made too many side-deals with Colombia and China. Lets not help to loose what we have worked so hard to acquire. Freedom and the right to work in our own country and to hire our own people. Remember people that Hillary is a big supporter of H1B visas. If you don't know what that is, please learn. Unions are starting to look at Obama for change. Please remember that Hillary sat on the board of Walmart and Walmart is not for buying products in America. They are an anti-union organization. The Clintons care more about how much they can get then what they can do for you. Remember that she has the second most lobbyist working for her campaign and McCain is the first. Remember the Steel-Factories in Pitt. that have left America and went to China. Remember NAFTA. Remember Upstate, N.Y. and how many jobs they have lost. I know CNN don't want to display this because it is the truth. Ted Turner does not believe in puttind the truth out for the American People. We care more about race problems then real issues.

If we could see Hillary out getting exercise, she might reduce that "wide handled stern" and "thunder thighs" she has,. but then again, I imagine she spends 50% of her time getting "botox" put into her cheeks, the ones on her face that is, and the other 50% of her time is spent getting her hair bleached…..what a phoney she is.

another post   April 26th, 2008 10:45 am ET

I totally agree with this comment from another post- the point being that even with all the advantages given to Obama, he is barely ahead in this primary race.

The ultimate irony for the Obama supporters (the smart, educated people) to ponder:

IF Obama is the democratic party nominee it will be because the Washington Insiders that he speaks against (Super delegates) GIVE it to him.

It will NOT be because he convinced the electorate with his inspiring message of hope and change.

Hillary Clinton has done as well without the hype of hope and the media bias and the celebrity bandwagon

You have to be ready to get thrown in the lion's den when you are dealing with the Clintons. As far as the American Constitution is concerned , I am not sure that the government should be legislating on spiritual issues affecting prayer and the like. Although I am concerned about the erosion of moral values in the United States, I don't think we should be so concerned with prayer in the pblic schools and the Ten commandments in our courthouses.
I think this country needs some new faces in the White house and Senator Obama has a terific chance of achieving this goal.

If Florida and Michigan revotes, that means that all the candidates that were supposed to be on the ballot should have thier names on it.So maybe in hinesight, knowing now what they did not know then, the entire race would probably be different. So you cannot go back and change what has been. The witch Hillary wants to control the past, present, and future, talking about arrogant.Hillary made the decision just like other democrats to follow the rules set by the DNC and now wants to change them,WOW!!!!!

J. McKinney   April 26th, 2008 10:53 am ET

If you could lead the country from a basketball court, maybe he would be ok, but being good at BB has nothing to do with leading the country. Glad he could relax that way, but is it news? We DO need Hillary so badly–her experience, her maturity, her capability, and especially the fact the she actually says what she will do in various situations, rather than just singing the "change' song, that doesn't say how or what we will change. Everyone who wants a democratic president, for goodness sakes, VOTE HILLARY. If she doesn't win the primary, why vote, as we are lost with either McCain or Obama.

voice of reason   April 26th, 2008 10:54 am ET

Do you know why Senator Obama looks so relaxed? Because he has already won the nomination. I understand people feel very strongly about their candidates. I pray for Senator Obama every day. But it is time for Clinton supporters to face the facts. Senator Obama will win at least half of the remaining state delegates. Come June he will have the states, the popular vote and he will need less than 100 votes to secure the nomination.

The DNC will pressure the Super D's to "unite" the party and the Hillary camp will implode. Whether you like it or not Senator Obama is the democratic nominee. HRC said herself that his policies are a lot closer to hers than John McCain's. We have a record number of democrats registering in almost every state. If we stick together we can win! For God's sake look at the issues! There is no way we can fix the economy, healthcare or anything else if we continue to spend billions of dollars on this war.

Dia Akin   April 26th, 2008 10:59 am ET

Grant, your comment was HILARIOUS! I can DEFINITELY see how she'll flip him stealing the ball into "taking away from the American people!" and making it extreme like "and once wasn't enough. Oh nooooo! He did it 2-3 times! Today he's taking basketballs. Tomorrow he's taking away your health care!" lol

Obamarama   April 26th, 2008 10:59 am ET

Obama_Zombie   April 26th, 2008 11:01 am ET

The people of Michigan and Florida did vote. The state just didn't follow the rules. Its not the people's fault however, rules were made over a year ago and all candidates and states signed off on it. HRC was okay before super Tuesday when the votes didn't count. Why is trying so hard now to get them…..? She does anything it takes to benefit her.

Peter   April 26th, 2008 11:05 am ET

This is good for Obama, people thinks it doesnt matter, but he is comfortable with B-ball and the fact that B-ball is popular in Indiana matters. We all saw how the bowling went.

Politics is often about who is comfortable. Obama new Pennsylvania was a difficult territory for him against Hillary, but Indiana is another story, it borders to Illinois and shares a lot of the media-market.

North Carolina will go to Obama for sure, especially since Bill Clinton is becoming more and more unpopular within the afro-american community , they are an extremely important voter group in NC.

I think Obama will win Indiana with 2-3%, it should be a tight race. Obama has some advantages, Hillary som other.
In NC i think Hillary needs 75% of the white vote to win, she hasnt gotten that so fare and will not get it this time. I think Obama will win NC with at least 10% which should seal the deal for his nomination.

Hillary needs to win both Indiana and North Carolina to win the nomination.

Mr. Los Angeles   April 26th, 2008 11:05 am ET

Chris, the people did vote. It just happens that their vote did NOT count.

Those delagtes should be seated by splitting the count 50/50. That's fair; that's what most people want.

What's better than playing ball in the hoosier state? Priceless!

John G Charleston, SC   April 26th, 2008 11:05 am ET

Interesting that he put on a Marine Corps tee shirt considering he never served in the military at all. Should have worn a tee shirt from Harvard or Columbia or one of the other elite schools that he went to.

Also funny that he needed a pro basketball player to keep up with high school students.

And the funniest thing of all….
There are real issues to deal with in this country and he's playing basketball.

He'll make a great president I'm sure.

E1944   April 26th, 2008 11:06 am ET

Here we go with the Florida and Michigan vote again. Change the rules
that all of the candidates agreed to and allow Queen Hillary to win
at any cost. Florida and Michigan powers that be made the decision
not to vote again. Let it go people .
Since Senator Clinton challenged Senator Obama to a bowl off I think
he should challenged her to a one on one basketball game and the
winner is the Democratic Presidential Nominee.

This will be a great, vibrant and healthy president.

dave   April 26th, 2008 11:10 am ET

that is a ten point lead - mathematics tells it all. Congrats and the opposite who played competively, fairly and portrayed the sportmanship.

The clintons would have played otherwise. Has it ever occured to the Clinton team that if we did not use mathematics for what it is supposed to do - that is analyse figures and data to provide precise and accurate results, and no balooning or inflating figures, it would have been extremely difficult to land on the moon.

There is no traditional methods for rounding figures…it is about accurancy and precision..so that the correct answer is arrived at.

I just wish this election would stop being about race. I for one really don't care about the color of their skin. All I car about is will they do what they say they will do. Every time the black don't get their way they cry race related. I say BUNK to them. I will vote for the one I think will truely run this country fairly for the next 4 years.

Dell   April 26th, 2008 11:12 am ET

He should apply the old basketball adage in his campaign against Hillary and Bill "When you have the shot, take it"

Matt   April 26th, 2008 11:17 am ET

to my dear friend fred, who loves posting his messages of hate…don't you see? the only way to work things out without war is to talk about them. spreading hate only fuels the fire, and the misunderstanding of cultures. war should ALWAYS be a last resort. if they want to live their way of life way across the world, let them. if their people want a change, then it is up to their people to change it. it is our governments responsibility to protect OUR way of life, not to enforce our way on others. If someone threatens our way of life then we protect it. do you realize the world hates americans for our cowboy policies of enforcing our way of life and our government on the entire world?

Spider   April 26th, 2008 11:17 am ET

This is not my first rodeo folks. I have voted in a few Presidential elections.
There have been a few Presidents, like Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter and George W. Bush, that received quite a few votes when they were elected. But guess what, if you ask people who voted in those elections you will find very few people that will admit they voted for them.
If elected, Barack Obama will be one of those Presidents. At the end of his term, no one will admit voting for him.
But this time around there's a catch, if you're Black there's a 90 to 95% chance you did.

Pete   April 26th, 2008 11:17 am ET

Experience is overrated. Look where our "experienced" Congress has brought us. Hillary's experience resulted in her voting for the war in Iraq. She has DC values, and was afraid of looking weak. Obama has courage, honesty, and a soft jumper - what else does a Prez need?

Randy   April 26th, 2008 11:20 am ET

Great to see a candidate with skills other than being a talking head. It also shows a youthfulness and balance of life. I like it. Many will call it a political stunt but I think it goes to what americans want.

So many people love March Madness or the NBA playoffs why not have a president who embraces those things.

kevin from alaska   April 26th, 2008 11:21 am ET

Sure, the North Carolina GOP ad is worse than anything Hillary ever put on the air…… but it's coming from a known evil. When attacks on Obama come from a Democrat like Hillary they hurt more. I still can't believe on 60 Minutes she refused to flat out say "Yes, Barack Obama is a Christian." That was the moment I knew I could never vote for her even if she won the nomination.

Texas Vet   April 26th, 2008 11:21 am ET

Obama’s not only “got game” he will also have the nomination. I suppose Bill will say of course he is good at Basketball.

It is a shame that the Clintons have done everything they can to convince voters and the Superdelegates a race issue. Voters and delegates should feel insulted by their inference it makes a difference. Hillary voters in Pennsylvania that said race did effect how they vote also said they would have no problem voting for Obama in November.

Since Obama will be the nominee, I am confident November voters will prove to the Republican Fear Machine is broken.

fixing   April 26th, 2008 11:22 am ET

Hillary may have gotten the bowlers' votes out east, but Indiana is basketball country!

thinking   April 26th, 2008 11:22 am ET

For some politicians, experienced or not, playing basketball can certainly add some points to their political career.

However, ordinary Americans' basic well-being is not a game for anyone to play, unless, of course, he or she would pay for their food, gas, housing, and medical bills.

mary   April 26th, 2008 11:22 am ET

Richard, Oakland, CA   April 26th, 2008 11:22 am ET

I'm sure people will find a way to criticize Obama for this.

Obama is the real deal. McCain is the real deal, too - it's his policies and views that are wrong. Thank God Clinton will be out soon.

SLO Bear   April 26th, 2008 11:22 am ET

A much more wholesome example than the shot and beer–and this is more than emblematic, since this election is really about our kids' future.

Rodney   April 26th, 2008 11:22 am ET

Nice steal! And how ofter are you going to see a presidential candidate play basketball and actually be halfway decent at it? I'm tired of all these old farts who are career politicians. I want a younger guy who has some young ideas, and can even come off his high horse to play some hoops every once in a while with the common folk.

Out with the status quo and in with some fresh change.

Grant, that was a funny comment, and sad, but true.

It must be a hard up news day for CNN. Every day in every way they find some kind of a story to make Obama look good. This one is a strain! Tomorrows story could be "Obama helps elderly lady cross street" and gets the boy scout award of the year. I would like to hear about his position on handguns and who made the notes on the questionaire regarding that subject. He ducked that question at the debate and said they were not his notes. Maybe they might be MIchelle's as it appears that she wears the pants in family

Brnman   April 26th, 2008 11:26 am ET

That's just Sen Obama's way for keeping in good physical shape.

Here is a small part of an article about former Clinton supporters.

'The Obama converts include William Louis-Dreyfus. The billionaire New York financier said he had been impressed by Clinton's performance in the Senate and distressed by eight years of the Bush administration when he donated the maximum to her campaign last August. Then, he said, he began watching more closely.

"However much one might have supported the Clintons, or one might support the usual suspects in the Democratic Party, I began to believe Obama represents a new approach. He gives off such a sense of relevance that he's sort of irresistible," Louis-Dreyfus said.

He also expressed, as did other big givers who crossed to Obama, exasperation about the tone of the Clinton campaign and frustration with the candidate herself.

"At the end of the day, all she had to do was open her mouth for me not to believe her," Louis-Dreyfus said'

aughhhh   April 26th, 2008 11:26 am ET

Not so out of touch with the people, is he? And he didn't have to make something up, he plays basketball all the time. I'm sure Clinton will try and twist this into something……that's the game SHE plays.

Bitter Allen Hussein, Visalia CA   April 26th, 2008 11:26 am ET

Any word out there on the Clintons campaign fraud case that began yesterday? Interesting there was nothing in the MSM about it, when ironically one of their top hillraisers defected to the winning team Obama. Curious to see how this plays out especially as they may be investigated as to how they raised 10 mil in 24 hours.

This is pretty much a stupid story; however, Indiana is renowned for its basketball, and it beats Hillary to the 'in' punch. By that, I mean she can't claim her uncle taught her how to shoot hoops at his home in the state before he took her to the Indy 500… you know, making her one of them. That's the first thing I think of when I think of Hillary; once you get beyond her public delusions-of-grandeur, self righteous fear mongering, and bankrupt campaign even with $109mil in the bank, she just a regular person.

Jake, California   April 26th, 2008 11:36 am ET

Watch out, Hillary will say that Obama has no integrity because he 'stole' the ball from one of the other team's players.

Or she'll say she won't play anything with the crowd because there might be snipers around….
Way to go bullet dodging, hand twisting, fear mongering princess!

2nd, he can play basketball and bowl and drink beer , but that still does not make him presidential material.

3rd. if he steals the primary from Hillary by intimidating the voters in the party, the party will end up losing in November.

I have always know that you can put all the perfume on a pig that you want, but the pig still smells like a pig.

You people are so judgmental! Why can't you just say "that's nice, but he still won't win" when the man leads in popular votes and delegates and states won. Why won't you just accept that? It's not Obama's fault that Hillary Clintin has run a shoddy campaign based on entitlement? She underestimated her opponent and spent money hard working people donated to her on lavish expenditures and has created a long line of deceit and dishonesty. Whose fault is this? She brought this on herself.
