WASHINGTON (AP) — President Bush poked fun at his potential successors Saturday night, expressing surprise that none of them were in the audience at the White House Correspondents' Association annual dinner.

"Senator McCain's not here," Bush said of GOP nominee-in-waiting John McCain. "He probably wanted to distance himself from me a little bit. You know, he's not alone. Jenna's moving out too."

Bush then referred to scandals that have dogged the campaigns of the two remaining Democratic candidates, Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama, in explaining their absence: "Hillary Clinton couldn't get in because of sniper fire and Senator Obama's at church."

Barbara - 65 yr old white female in NC   April 27th, 2008 10:55 am ET

What a joke - maybe he should have been a comedian , because he certainly fell on his face as president. The whole world is watching.

Julia in Eugene, OR   April 27th, 2008 10:56 am ET

I'd rather be at church than sitting a boring dinner listen to an already lame-duck President make jokes at others' expense. I HAD respect for President Bush. I never voted for him, but he had my respect several years ago. This behavior, well, that's just icing on the long-molding cake.

After further review,Texas   April 27th, 2008 10:57 am ET

A majority of the American people want to distance themselves from Governor Bush.

Sam I Am   April 27th, 2008 10:58 am ET

Did Bush pretend to look for Iraqi WMDs under the tables and desks again?

Blayze Kohime   April 27th, 2008 10:59 am ET

That's really the best he could come up with?

Susan MO   April 27th, 2008 11:02 am ET

Same swaggering, cocky, arrogant and smug manner.

Two peas in a pod.

I'm rollin… Sounds like he's lightening up and looking forward to getting the H out of the White House. I for one can't wait, either! Good chuckles, though…

Shame on you CNN.

Greg Turner   April 27th, 2008 11:58 am ET

I am not a fan of President Bush, but I have to admit, that was pretty funny. Too bad his jokes are better than his presidency.

I won't vote for Obama for the same reasons I never voted for Bush.

Nice, is well… just not necessarily nice.

Spin is just another form of lying.

Cocky, boastful, arrogant and dismissive are not good attributes in the leader of the free world.

Beverly   April 27th, 2008 12:30 pm ET

To Preseident Bush: while you are not the best president this country has ever seen, I do like your sense of humor. Sometimes, being able to laugh at ourselves is the only way to maintain sanity in an insane world.

Moses   April 27th, 2008 12:30 pm ET

haha, for the first time I'm laughing with bush rather then at Bush's folly's.

DB in NH   April 27th, 2008 12:30 pm ET

Peg   April 27th, 2008 1:03 pm ET

He is pretty funny, here. Too bad his Presidency is nothing more than a joke as well.

Franky   April 27th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

Well, there's nothing like having a good laugh since you're gonna go down as one of the worst Presidents of all time but hey, maybe it won't be that bad for him afterwards, LOL!!! And ohh yeah, we're gonna throw a party after he's gone, LOL!!!

Matt   April 27th, 2008 1:05 pm ET

Clintons are so desperate to win, they blame the media now for everything, and they are the ones whining. They said Sen. Obama was complaining about the questions in ABC debate, what sen. Obama said was those questions will not help bring jobs back to America, those silly questions wont bring health care to americans, those questions will not help reduce gas prices.. and most of all, those are questions Obama already addressed. It looks like the Clintons are the ones that are really whinning and are desperate to blame anyone just to win, and they change the rules in the middle of the game, and they say only big states matter, really the fact is, all big states Sen. Clinton won are democratic states, do you think New york or california will be republican ? media is just silly, they run by what the Clintons say, they don't cover the truth.

Solomon   April 27th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

i don't care for him much as a president, but i gotta admit that those jokes were funny…lol

ShannonL   April 27th, 2008 1:07 pm ET

When it gets sooo bad….you have to laugh to keep from crying. But what do you do after that? I think Bush needs to shut up and go on vacation.

john   April 27th, 2008 1:07 pm ET

He's funny

georgia   April 27th, 2008 1:10 pm ET

Obama the other typical white meat   April 27th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

Bush had a fun run I guess at our expense (oil, jobs, healthcare). Hillary will fix it though.

Jerry Con   April 27th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

He may be a bad president, but BY GOD he's funny!

Jeff   April 27th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

I can't wait until this clown is out of the White House. His "conservative" policies have run our economy head-first into a brick wall. Don't even get me started on foreign relations….

Dmitriy   April 27th, 2008 1:18 pm ET

That was funny.

My family and I will gladly jump ship to McCain if it means getting rid of the far left radicals, starting with Pelosi, If Obama is the best the far left can come up with for president, then they have no place in politics.

I am surprised he is listening to what is going on "outside the White House". Since several weeks ago he was asked about $4/gal for gasoline and he said: "really, I didn't know that".

THIS IS WHAT I CALL BEING OUT OF TOUCH!
