CORAL GABLES, Florida (AP) — Republican presidential candidate John McCain on Sunday called Democratic rival Barack Obama insensitive to poor people and out of touch on economic issues.

The GOP nominee-in-waiting rapped his Democratic rival for opposing his idea to suspend the tax on fuel during the summer, a proposal that McCain believes will particularly help low-incom people who usually have older cars that guzzle more gas.

"I noticed again today that Sen. Obama repeated his oppositionto giving low-income Americans a tax break, a little bit of relief so they can travel a little further and a little longer, and maybe have a little bit of money left over to enjoy some other things in their lives," McCain said. "Obviously Sen. Obama does not understand that this would be a nice thing for Americans, and the special interests should not be dictating this policy."

The Arizona senator deflected questions about his record on the Bush administration's tax cuts — he initially opposed them but now supports extending them — by again criticizing Obama.

"Sen. Obama wants to raise the capital gains tax, which would have a direct effect on 100 million Americans," McCain said.

"That means he has no understanding of the economy and that he is totally insensitive to the hopes and dreams and ambitions of 100 million Americans who will be affected by his almost doubling of the capital gains tax."

In an interview with "Fox News Sunday," Obama said McCain "not only wants to continue some of the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans and corporations, he actually wants to extend them, and he hasn't told us really how he's going to pay for them. It is irresponsible. And the irony is he said it was irresponsible."

Obama also said he would not raise the capital gains tax higher than it was under President Reagan and added, "I'm mindful that we've got to keep our capital gains tax to a point where we can actually get more revenue."

Obama's core vulnerability - he's predictable.

The Patriot   April 27th, 2008 5:23 pm ET

Who? Oh yeah…McCain the presumptive Republican nominee…LOL. Sen. Obama has shown time and time again how he understands the economy; his speech in Philadelphia on the economy was one of the best articulated on the issue so far this race.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   April 27th, 2008 5:23 pm ET

If you think for one minute McCain is going to hurt Cindy's beer business profit, think again. McCain is too old and too out of touch with average Americans. He's been in Washington too long and is part of the economic problems our country faces. Vote democrat.

Brett   April 27th, 2008 5:25 pm ET

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

"The special interests should not be dictating this policy."

Coming from someone who has lobbyists as campaign staff, I find this hard to believe.

Mccain economic plan is 100 more yrs of George dubya failed economic policies!

speech   April 27th, 2008 5:29 pm ET

Wait… be patient…
Soon Obama will give a brilliant speech on the economy… which will be built up by the media as the best speech EVER and one for the history books. And he will be given free airtime to do it.

Cuz he is just special.

I miss Clinton already.

both sides   April 27th, 2008 5:30 pm ET

Obama speaks out of both sides of his mouth- on everything.

That is why he can't debate.

McCain is out to lunch and out of touch with what is going on. Living in eight homes, a US senator for 25 years, he looks like a tourist.

ya know McCain is funny. How is it a person who doesn't really understand about the ecoonomy tells someone they don't?

he must didn't read that the two winners of the Nobel prize for economics prefer Obama's economic plan over both Clinton and McCain.

How are we going to stay at war for another 100 years and give Americans tax cuts? Oh, you are going for the $20 trillion deficit mark aren't you McSame. This man is ridiculous.

parsing   April 27th, 2008 5:36 pm ET

Leave Obambi alone.

Don't parse his words.

He said he would not raise CG tax, but what he really mean't was… he would.

Just like he is going to withdraw from Iraq… but may be he won't.

Or he will kill Nafta, but no he will only renegotiate.

Obama is dead in the water.

Hillary is the only one.

mccain   April 27th, 2008 5:37 pm ET

Its going to be an easy win. If you look at what he has voted for and what he wasn't even present for to vote. If people were voting on substance vs race or gender then it might be more difficult

Obama rules   April 27th, 2008 5:38 pm ET

John McCain clearly hasn't learned the rules.

You can not target Obama on any issue.

Or risk the race card being played.

Just look at the battered Clintons, who dared to campaign against the great Obama. Soon they were criticized just for breathing.

Obama, on the other hand can play dirty and the media will pretend he is rising above the fray.

Mccain, go retire quietly somewhere with whatever dignity you have left and leave the economy and the country in the hands of knowledgeable people.

Why McCain always attack Obama and not Hillary? Is it because he knows with Hillary big baggage if she is the nominee it will be easier to show her weaknesses?
Same thing with the GOP in N.C. with their ad. the definitely would prefer Hillary to be the nominee.
It has been well spread that she is working for 2012, if it is true she will surprise of the results. We will be all there waiting for her by not voting or by changing our affiliation and I do believe the african american will do the same.

Lee Bartholomew   April 27th, 2008 7:08 pm ET

from what I understand, the tax in question helps fix our roads. Take that tax away and more repairs on the card. Bit more expensive in the long run and some construction crews now doubt would be laid off. Lotta help that'll do.

Lake Hart - A Native American Writer   April 27th, 2008 7:16 pm ET

Since when John McCain or the GOP cares for the "Little Guy," he is talking about gas tax cut, pennies. The action and activities of the leaders of the GOP - especially the present administration - is directly responsible for oil price to have increased three folds in the last six years. That is only a small portion of the consequences of their actions, the War in Iraq, the support for the production of "Bio-Diesel" - an economic and environmental nightmare - like the wars they are all knee jerk reaction, with significant "Special Interest Benefits." We will see food and basic commodities doubled in the next few years - cost, cost, cost…transportation, processing, labour, raw materials etc…I know that Sen. Obama understands the magnitude of the mess he will be inheriting - hope he has the support of all parties in Washington - because this is not just for Democrats, Republicans, or Americans, this will definitely affect all of humanity, globally - the cost of food and basic commodities is disproportionately felt by the poor and disenfranchised ( Simple put increase of $50.00/ week will be felt more by someone earning $100 or less/ week than someone earning $1000/week). John McCain like most of the leaders of the GOP cannot relate to $50.00/week for food and basic commodities per household! Sincerely, Lake Hart, a Native American Writer.

Randall, Greenville, SC   April 27th, 2008 7:20 pm ET

McCain: "a little bit of relief so they can travel a little further and a little longer."

So, we save them 40 cents/gallon so they can travel farther and longer and end up spending more money in the end? I hope the public actually listens to what these politicians say, because none of it makes sense.

Obama take his words? He was right about one thing, if Obama
is elected President , the change he speaks about, will not
be for the good of our Country.

Michael   April 27th, 2008 9:48 pm ET

Lets face it we take away the 18 or so cents a gallon that currently is reinvested into our roads and bridges, the price will initially to down about 10 - 15 cents but then you'll see the oil companies quickly get their price right back to where it is now. Only now we'll have outrageous prices and now way to fix our roads. You have to address the actual issue, and that's to stop these oil companies from being able to gouge the American people. Meanwhile we need to eliminate/reduce our dependency on oil. Those are real fixes; attack the problem!

Bitter Allen Hussein, Visalia CA   April 27th, 2008 9:49 pm ET

That is rich coming from McCain. McCain didn't realize that the mortgage crisis was bad until his 3rd speech on it and proposes to continue the Bush economic policies. For someone who flies around on his wife's private jet to call a a person who worked as a community organizer in the poorest parts of Chicago "insensitive to poor people and out of touch on economic issues" is utterly mind boggling. He has learned well from the hand of Bush!

Greg, San Francisco, CA   April 27th, 2008 9:59 pm ET

Growing up as a poor person has obviously made Obama insensitive to the plight of the poor, whereas John McCain marrying into a gajillion dollar marriage makes him a 'man of the people'. Riiiiight.

I wouldn't expect Obama to debate him on this.

Lyz in MD   April 28th, 2008 6:01 am ET
