Obama says he's 'outraged' with pastor's comments

CNN

Watch Barack Obama comment on his former pastor.

(CNN) - In his harshest criticism yet of his former minister, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Barack Obama said he was “outraged” by Wright’s comments at the National Press Club Monday, and “saddened by the spectacle.”

“I have been a member of Trinity Church since 1992. I have known Rev. Wright for almost 20 years,” he said at a Winston-Salem, North Carolina press conference Tuesday. “The person I saw yesterday is not the person I met 20 years ago.”

Obama said he was outraged by Wright’s remarks that seemed to suggest the U.S. government might be responsible for the spread of AIDS in the black community, and his equation of some American wartime efforts with terrorism. And he seemed to signal a complete break with his former minister.

“What particularly angered me was his suggestion somehow that my previous denunciation of his remarks were somehow political posturing,” said Obama, who added that Wright had shown “little regard for me” and seemed more concerned with “taking center stage.”

He is outraged now because it is affecting his polling #'s. He did not care that Americans have been outraged for weeks. He would not denouce the man before but now that it is hurting his #'s he is throwing him under the bus.

Question – Wright was never his Spiritual Advisor? Is that true? I thought Obama had said in the past he was or it was in his book...does anyone know?

Obamanaics - come on lets get the spin going!!!

I am outraged by Wright & Obama both. He said in the pews for 20 years and never heard those sermons – yeah right !!!!

He was not very convincing (he reminds me of Carter-hmmmm)
If he disowns his reverend-he disowns the black people..he's walking on a tight rope, and he eventually will fall.
your chickens have come to roost Obama.

Do not worry Obama, I will vote for you. I don't know why your former pastor is doing that. To hurt you? I do not know but you will be OK.

How can you trust Hillary who has lied over and over again. Please don't forget the Clinton's will lie and cheat, without thinking of the consequences. I pray for Chealsea. Obama does have integrity and honor. All the digging has brought up is Rev. Wright.

Look, let's get real. Obama is a great man, who knows how to lead us.

Everyone liked Bill Clinton, until he decided to have sex with Monica in the Oval Office, with his wife in some room around the corner somewhere. He left office after impeachment, and in scandal.
That's what happens when you put yourself, and your needs before the needs of the nation. Hillary is doing the same thing; deviding the country, to the cost of the general election. But what she care? She can run again in 2012!!
Let's get real!! Obama should be the next President; get over Rev. Wright; the man has already said he does not speak for him!!!

    Good for Obama.

Obama gave Wright the benefit of the doubt, refusing to throw him under the bus when the public, the media and many voters wanted him to when those maniacal tapes first came to light. And what was the thanks Obama got? More rantings and lunacy from a self-centered egotist. Wright is promoting a false religion; Jesus did not teach us to hate.

I imagine this must have been difficult for Obama, but Wright needed to be denounced. Furthermore, Trinity United Church of Christ should denounce Wright as well.

I believe that Wright's speech was very strategic. During the last big vote, the idiot's snippets surfaced on the internet. Now, all of a sudden often a hiatus, just in time for another big vote, the idiot resurfaces. He has an ego and needs to get over himself. Pride=destruction sir, check the Bible. It saddens me as an African American to have a proclaimed preacher, not even care about his flock.

BRAVO FOR OBAMA, AND I HOPE ONCE AND FOR ALL, THE MEDIA WILL PUT THIS TO BED, AND MOVE ON TO THE REAL ISSUES.
TO THE ANTI OBAMA FACTIONS,... IT'S OBVIOUS NO MATTER WHAT, OBAMA CANNOT DO ANYTHING TO SATISFY YOU, YOUR NARROW MINDS ARE ALREADY MADE UP, YOU'RE ENTITLED TO YOUR OPINIONS, BUT US OBAMAITES COULD CARE LESS ABOUT WHAT YOU THINK, YOU ARE POORER FOR IT, BY NOT BEING ABLE TO RATIONALIZE THE FACTS.

Only in America can a President get away with instigating a War without justification, destroy the economy, and tarnish the image of this Country and yet we, the people, argue over irrelevant issues. Unless we, the people, can get over this senseless, irrelevant, madness, this country will continue to falter. ALL of this is just further indication that the Racial and Social divide still remains as potent as ever......

Unless soemthing changes immediately, we will be witnessing the demise of the Democratic Party... thank you Media :-(

    D'Anne,
NO WAY!! Obama made his bed and now he has to 'lay' in it.
Look how Obama supporters are – you attack Clinton, but when Obama is in trouble you all act holier than tho'...snotty and superior. Obama set himself up for this – and it tells the world that Obama is in now way, at all qualified to be President..

    Get over OBAMA....he's done.

Obama, you are a stand-up guy. In an age where people say and do anything to get elected, you did not run away from the conflict. You did the right thing. I go to church quite consistently and I have heard my pastor say many things that I disagreed with. Did I run away from the church? Hell no! A church is bigger than its egomaniac minister. I respect you Mr. Obama.

He needs to leave this whole Jeremiah Wright issue alone and go on with his campaign. What happened in the past already happened. Jeremiah Wright isn't Obama, and Obama's church organization doesn't describe the man that he is.

    CNN is just biased
Why are my comments never posted? Obama don't let the media drive you nuts, CNN can do that very well
Just ignore them and focus on your campaign and don't let pastor Wright get in your way. You are a strong man, a leader and an honest person, unlike Hillary (here comes the sniper fire watch out !!)

I wonder what is worst. What Rev Wright said or McCain's supporter, Rod Parsley's genocidal comments about Muslims or another McCain supporter, Hagge's anti-Catholic statement?

When will CNN and other news organization hold McCain's feet to the fire, especially for Parsley's comment which holds national security implications. At least Wright's comment doesn't threaten the national security of the United States.

you can't win or lose with the Rev.– he's a great guy with extreme views that aren't as off mainstream as folks like to believe- he loves the conspiracy theories as millions of others (davinci code, 9/11 etc) - obama is right in thinking that wright won't stop taking center stage- it's in his nature and the press can't get enough of him– Obama can't let this drag him down but it's a sad situation he's been dragged into non the less.

so screw the press and the bigots who forced this silly situation.

i've got friends for many years who've said worst than wright- but i've never been forced to disown them cause SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITTTTTTTT it's just talk and they all have their better qualities that far out shine 9/11 conspiracy theories and black helicopters and alien landings...

Oops! It looks like Obama may not be the perfect person afterall. Who would have thought??? He has done nothing but bring this upon himself. I am sorry, but if you attend Wright's church for 15 years, you know his ideologies and you obviously are not disgusted by them or you wouldn't continue to go there. If you plan on making politics your profession, the last thing you ever would want is to put yourself in that situation. Either Wright had secret sermons when you were not around where he preached his hate and misinformation or you are just a liar. I'm thinking the latter. Obama had the media in his pocket and now he has shot himself in the foot. Being a professional politician means you need to walk the straight and narrow in the public. I wonder if the media will continue to endorse Obama now?

Sen. Obama is doing exactly as his political cronies in Chicago have instructed him to do for years now. He is a crooked politician from Chicago (where pockets run deep) who lied when he told the American people that he would not run for president in 2008, he lies about his ties with the slum lord on trial in Chicago, he told Rev. Wright to stay in the background when he announced his run for the oval office. He now expects us to believe him when he denounces his pastor of 20 years!!! He has done very little for the people of Illinois except vote "present" in our Senate. Voting present is not taking a stand for anything. He has done nothing for the state of Illinois (except Chicago). That's why he did not receive many votes outside of Chicago. Please check his voting record for yourself.

I think Mr. Obama did a good job of explaining his disgust in Rev. Wright's remarks and we all need to move on. Go Obama!! You are the best candidate to move us forward.
