Obama says he's 'outraged' with pastor's comments

CNN

Watch Barack Obama comment on his former pastor.

(CNN) - In his harshest criticism yet of his former minister, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Barack Obama said he was “outraged” by Wright’s comments at the National Press Club Monday, and “saddened by the spectacle.”

“I have been a member of Trinity Church since 1992. I have known Rev. Wright for almost 20 years,” he said at a Winston-Salem, North Carolina press conference Tuesday. “The person I saw yesterday is not the person I met 20 years ago.”

Obama said he was outraged by Wright’s remarks that seemed to suggest the U.S. government might be responsible for the spread of AIDS in the black community, and his equation of some American wartime efforts with terrorism. And he seemed to signal a complete break with his former minister.

“What particularly angered me was his suggestion somehow that my previous denunciation of his remarks were somehow political posturing,” said Obama, who added that Wright had shown “little regard for me” and seemed more concerned with “taking center stage.”

LMAO. First he didn't know anything, then he denounced him , then he defended him, then he separated himself, then denounced what he said, Now he's outraged. I bet....you're true colors have shown. No one knew who you were. We were just "hoping" for something better because this country needs it. You can keep changing your story Obama, but it 's over for you. You aren't presidential material.

Smart democrats will vote for Hillary, unless they want McCain.

Outrage? The guy's been saying the same things for 20 years. This is exactly what Wright was saying about Obama. He's just another politician. I would have had respect for what Obama said if he had turned on his heel and left Wright's church when these remarks were first made. Now his "outrage" lacks any credibility.

In his BIG IMPORTANT SPEECH ON RACE Senator Obama said he could no more disown Rev. Wright than he could a member of his own family. If I were a member of Senator Obama's family I guess I should consider this a warning.

Wright is way out of line, taking Obama to task for seperating himself from his personal beliefs and commentary.
Wright should be going out of his way to seperate Obama from his rhetoric!
    That's if he wasn't grandstanding.

Too late, you're done for! We have heard and seen enough. You are an unknown factor that doesn't look good given what we have found out lately. In fact you look very bad at this point.

Giving speeches that sound like music to some peoples' ears is not going the change anything and it is certainly not going to get you the nomination and the White House.

Hillary will lead us to victory in November!!!

Jay, that is funny. Why would he like? He is a nut that is why. You might not like Obama, you might think Hillary is a better candidate, Obama does not have the background for the job, but there is nothing to suggest from his activities that he is with Wright on these issues. And so you and Peter, and dmw are not being honest. That is why there is no reasoning with you. Don' be like that, vote Hillary if you like but dont give way to the campainia mania.

! Fact. Obama did the right thing before not to through his pastor under the bus – what Wright pulled there on the Clinton organized (!!! see Drudge) press meeting is disgusting. Now it's time to smack the fist on the table !

    Good for Barack Obama !

So he goes to this church for 20 years and just now he has decided to speak out against his Pastor??? What a load of bologna. This is laugh out loud funny. Obama looks utterly ridiculous.

After 20 years, if you just figured out this guy was a kook, you might not be bright enough to be the President. And after the last 8 years, that's a low bar you are failing to reach, Obama.

Your spin comes about 2 months too late. Not buying it.

  18. Hooray for Hillary!!!

First Obama didn't hear him, then he did, then Wright was his beloved uncle, now he's throwing him under the bus, just like typical White grandma :)

Well, now I FINALLY figured out what Obama means by "change": it means changing his mind whenever he thinks it benefits him politically.

He lied when he said he wasn't his mentor. Obama has said many times in the past that Wright was his mentor. How can anyone believe this guy?

    April 29, 2008 02:27 pm at 2:27 pm |
  22. Grayson

Why would he lie?? Ok so know we are giving Wright some credibility??? I think it's just simply STUPID SEASON now for people to think that Obama is secretly in cahoots with Wright-wing politics in an effort to destroy the country. Obama represents the next chapter in American race and political relations.
    Go-Bama!!!!

Okay, now can we get back to where the candidates stand on the issues? Please stop letting Wright have more press than Clinton and Obama.
