Watch Rep. Clyburn's interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer.

WASHINGTON (CNN)—House Majority Whip James Clyburn has a message for Rev. Jeremiah Wright: “Silence is golden.”

The Democratic congressman – who has not yet publicly backed a candidate – expressed relief over the controversial minister’s absence from the campaign trail the day after Barack Obama expressed called his comments “divisive and destructive.”

“Please let us go forward with this campaign… so that we can chalk a way forward that will be a benefit to our children and grandchildren,” Clyburn said in a message to Wright on CNN Wednesday, telling the pastor directly he should not continue to “inject himself” into the national discussion.

The South Carolina congressman repeated his pledge to remain neutral until a nominee is chosen, but did say he expected a clear nominee “within days” of the last Democratic primary contest on June 3.

“What I am trying to do is maintain a climate within our Democratic Party that allows good viable debate to take place that will add value to this campaign,” Clyburn told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer.

He rejected the notion that the candidate with the most pledged delegates should be the nominee, telling CNN that the nomination should be decided based on several important measures, including popular vote totals, the number of states a candidate has won, and an assessment of who will be most competitive against Republican John McCain in November.

It appears Mr. Clyburn is the only superdelegate that has all of his ducks in a row. taking in the whole picture ,and then deciding on his choise for the presidential nomenee is the only fair way to have a nomenee that will beat McCain.

Jon Cruz   April 30th, 2008 9:12 pm ET

Clyburn: follow your own advice, please.

Eddie P, rochester ny   April 30th, 2008 9:11 pm ET

Bravo Mr. Clyburn. All of the superdelegates should view this primary the same way you do. Your way of thinking is the only way this primary would be fair to both candidates.

NOBODY CAN MAKE PASTOR WRIGHT SHUT UP. TELLING PASTOR WRIGHT THAT "SILENCE IS GOLDEN" BY A POLITICIAN
LIKE CLYBURN OUGHT TO KNOW THAT THE PASTOR HAS FOUND
A GOLDMINE OF OPPORTUNITY ON THE SPEAKING TOUR !!!
IF THE PASTOR HELD OBAMA AS A GOOD FRIEND ,MENTOREE
AND SUPPORTER , HE WOULD NOT HAVE SPOKE SO MUCH HATEFULL ANTI-AMERICAN RHETORIC AND SERMONS IN WHICH OBAMA HAD BEEN A CHURCH MEMBER FOR 20 TEARS

Bill, Covington   April 30th, 2008 8:56 pm ET

Is there realy people out there that believe Clyburn or any of the rest of that bunch, including the obama, are going to distance themselves from Rev. Wright?
Each and every one of them think that the obama might be the long awaited 12TH IMAM. WAKE UP AMERICA!

Dave W   April 30th, 2008 8:54 pm ET

Mr. Clyburn, you should be running against McCain this November.

Cheryl   April 30th, 2008 8:52 pm ET

I guess the latest Clinton e-mail talks about Obama's so called whining. Puhleaze!!!!

Clinton hs been whining, near tears, playing the victim for months.
Give me a break!

Yes, be quiet Wright, don't burst the already busted bubble. Come 'on, this guy is done.

I wonder why the media won't ask the question: Who is lying? Sen. Obama who has painted himself as an honest politician with his 'politics of change' or a Pastor???????????????

Leodis Strong   April 30th, 2008 8:34 pm ET

Who really believes that Jim Clyburn is not already completely supporting Barack Obama? Clyburn voted in his own SC primary and no doubt voted for Obama. Do you think he voted any differently? Clyburn beats up on Bill Clinton every time Bill takes a strong stand against Obama but what has Clyburn publicly said about how Obama or his surrogates have attacked Hillary? Jim Clyburn is not neutral in this election and Bill Clinton did not play the race card. Obama played the race card in SC when Obama repeatedly told black crowds that Bill Clinton was trying to "bamboozle, hoodwink, run a hokey doke" (words taken directly from Malcolm X's statements to blacks that white America had brainwashed them) on them by saying that Obama's Iraq position was a "fairy tale". Clyburn never called Obama to task for playing the race card. (By the way, I'm African-American).

Spirit of America   April 30th, 2008 8:33 pm ET

No, silence is not golden. In the prophetic tradition allegedly embraced and expressed by Rev. Wright, you must speak truth to power in love. Problem is Wright spoke his appalling truth to a power-seeker in revenge. Egomaniacs, whether politician or pastor, have a habit of self-destruction.

Jack Burton   April 30th, 2008 8:25 pm ET

Telling the oppressed black man to just "shut up" eh. Don't want to hear no uppity Negro speaking the truth about the white masters.

honkey white guy from cali   April 30th, 2008 8:20 pm ET

Hey mike go buy yourself an education you really need one. If you want to be lead into a even bigger whole than we already are by someone that has lied more than any other political figure I can remember in 35 years of voting go right ahead. brainwashed people!

Go Obama 08 Yes we Can

D.Kimbro OHIO   April 30th, 2008 8:17 pm ET

Excellent suggestion. This old crab in a barrel, knows that he wants the Clintons to win. This is what happens when you raise a man to a position of trust thst only CHRIST should occupy. With all of the corruption in churches, it is no wonder that men of the cloth wield so little power today. I don't understand how anyone can try and saddle Obama with this mans rantings. If he should have left the church, why didnt any catholics leave the church with it's scandals. Judge not lest ye be judged.

Susan MO   April 30th, 2008 8:13 pm ET

Clyburn, Wright does need to slow down.

Also, hope you endorse Hillary Clinton..
She is experienced, for the people, and a fighter.

John   April 30th, 2008 8:12 pm ET

Rep. Clyburn is probably right on calling a ceasefire, but may be too little too late.

john   April 30th, 2008 8:10 pm ET

just when America was ready to elect its first black president, a racist minister comes along to derail him…and it can not be blamed on that white man but on that black man..

war monger   April 30th, 2008 8:09 pm ET

Didn't he try to pretend people who weren't racist were?

Didn't he spur the racial divide by his comments.

NOw he wants to help get Obama back into the good graces of Americans.

Maybe in 10 years.

John   April 30th, 2008 8:08 pm ET

Rep. Clyburn is probably right in calling for a ceasefire! I am of the opinion, that such a powerful legislator waited for too long. The request on Rev.Wright to remain silent,is too little and too late. There is damage done, that will take longer than the upcoming election. That is on either side of the equation.

ANTI CLINTONS   April 30th, 2008 8:04 pm ET

Agreed Mr. Clyburn, Wright should just shut up and go back to doing what he does best, nothing.

INDY PENDENT   April 30th, 2008 8:04 pm ET

People the issue is not about Wright but about Obama's decision making.
I do not see how anyone can blame Wright for Obama's decline.
Obama made the choice to go to Wrights Church.
Obama made the choice to become a very close friend with this man.
Obama made the choice to attend this church and listen to this man for 20+ years.
Obama, your choices are what put you at fault for this.
What other reason was there that kept you attending his Church and listening to his sermons and donating money to his church for 20+ years if you didn't agree on what that man was preaching.
Obama you made a horrible choice 20 years ago that you kept on making for 20 years.
And now you blame this man for your political downfall.
Pulleeaase….
I think the change that Wright wants and preaches is exactly the change you want. That is why you do not give any specifics about the change you are going to bring, because that change is a warped, racist change.
For all you Obama supporters are you seriously still trusting this man.

Shannon   April 30th, 2008 7:59 pm ET

I wish Mr Clyburn would take his own advice and stop with the pandering!
All this poor me crap from the Obama side is just getting old!

Carol Owen   April 30th, 2008 7:58 pm ET

Shame on the press, especially CNN. Talk about milking a story for all it's worth! There are so many more important issues in America than whose nutty minister said what. The bible makes reference to not being "my brother's keeper." Senator Obama has made it extremely clear that Rev. Wright does not speak for him. Enough, already.

outsider   April 30th, 2008 7:58 pm ET

Great Job! There are still some reasonable minds overthere.

Lana, NATIVE AMERICAN CHEROKEE INDIAN   April 30th, 2008 7:57 pm ET

CNN knock it off. You need to get rid of your ticker screeners and get new ones. They are biased and irresponsible.

Joojo   April 30th, 2008 7:56 pm ET

For Clyburn, all should either chill, shut up or ……………………………….HRC all the way

Tyger   April 30th, 2008 7:55 pm ET

I really dont understand why whites are so upset about Rev. Wright's comments in the first place. Is what he said not true?

I understand the political inconvenience and the unfortunate timing for Obama, but he opened the "pandora's box" of race, religion and culture in America. Those issues are ripe with political incorrectness, i.e. when has there ever been an open dialogue about race, religion or culture without someone or some group not being offended? Its virtually impossible.

Obama set out to do something nobody has ever done - unite this country across demographical lines. Thats a Herculian chore and a bit altruistic if you ask me. How can you do that and run a political campaign successfully?

Race, religion, culture are ripe with "moral" questions that arent suited for inclusion in a political campaign, maybe afterward as a part of the legislative process, but not while campaigning, where the "risks" far outweigh the reward.

Moreover, the voting populus is not an especially highly educated one. When Rev. Wright refers to the Tuskegee experiment, how many voting age whites even know what he's talking about?

African-American history is selective in this country and something most school districts would rather ignore or gloss over, even if its factually true.

I dont like Rev. Wrights' timing, but there's nothing "beyond the pale" in his recent speech at the National Press Club. He's asking for an open dialogue on the same issues Obama raised. He defended his positions eloquently; nor did he come across as the stark raving mad lunatic that the media has attempted to portray.

And his position that the "attack" was on the black church, not him is a stretch, but not unfounded, if you have any knowledge about black history, if you dont, then should enlighten yourself and I think thats what he was attempting to do, educate the unenlightened.

The black church has always been a "safe haven" for blacks to speak about "any" issues concerning the collective group. Now, because Barak is running for president, that should change?

Nevertheless, it wouldnt hurt for Rev. Wright to take a sabbatical for a couple months.

Sylvia   April 30th, 2008 7:54 pm ET

Jeremiah Wright will be back in front of camera soon
Obama I feel sorry for you
Sorry again my family votes for Hillary

patricia   April 30th, 2008 7:25 pm ET

Obama will be the best leader for our country. Those who want power and want to stay in power are bombarding him with negative attacks yet he maintains an even keel and continues to demonstrate superior judgment on economic issues (for example Hillary and McCain's gas tax plan that won't help) and the Iraq war. Experts and lawmakers in Congress agree his health plan is the one that will succeed.

Tony, Miami   April 30th, 2008 7:21 pm ET

I think it's from François de Malherbe : " Silence is golden everything else is weakness"

Priscilla for Obama   April 30th, 2008 7:20 pm ET

Wright showed his true colors. He is phony! Real preachers don't put themselves on display and then lie and try to pull down others. He's self-serving and hypocritical.

Go Obama!

BJ   April 30th, 2008 7:19 pm ET

And this guy had the nerve to criticize the Clintons?

He's as much of a hypocrite as the Obama campaign is!

Obama? No!   April 30th, 2008 7:18 pm ET

Haha! He is really Obama's safeguard!

I think Both Obama and Clyburn should shut up!

No obama!

Ann Aloha FariMedia, PA   April 30th, 2008 7:18 pm ET

Clyburn is a hyprcrite…he is not neutral at all…he was celebrating for Obama's victory in SC and led the false racist accusations against Pres Clinton. Shame on you Clyburn.
The Obamanites are Cruel and Hostile and KARMA got this "W-Right".
The Obama Campaign and The Pro Obama Media(CNN and MSNBC) tried to paint a horrible picture of both Clintons with spins and Anti-Clinton rheteric and now have to Eat Crow.
The bias and subjective primary coverage that favored Obama is now HISTORY…the people are seeing through this and Indiana and North Carolina will respond to this horrible BAD JUDGEMENT OF SENATOR OBAMA. This divorce should have came years ago when Obama decided to run for the Presidency…BUT NO Obama tried to conceal this disaster and his campaign tried to re-direct the attention to the Clintons AND THEY FAILED HORRIBLY.
This is only one of many disgressions that Senator Obama and his campaign concealed…and as the rest will surface the more we will see TRUE POLITICIAN AS USUAL will surface also.
Senator Obama's smug and arrogant sexist and racist behavior has met head on with reality and not even the Pro-Obama Media will be able to save his sorry self.
If Obama was 100% White and he went to a "White Church" all of us(People Of Color) would be crucifying him but since the Church he attends is mojority "Black" it's okay to spew Racist, Hatred and Anti-American senitments. Even in it's "So Called" minimal amount of usage…that type of rheteric is unacceptable and to use the excuse that he was quoting another person(which turns out to be FALSE), you took the responsibility to put that garbage in play. Nobody made you choose that phrases to create a hostile environment.
For 20 years you knew of this behavior…You got called to the front and got caught and know you want us to believe you were misled…HOGWASH…YOU MISLED US!!

Clyburn you should shutup, you keep on opening the race card everytime a primary is right in the corner. Guess what, Wright throw Obama under the bus after Obama toss him there. Hey! don't blame the white man or use race card again! You're doing it to each other!

Jo   April 30th, 2008 7:14 pm ET

This man sounds like a politican with some good old fashion horse sense and a pulse on the people. He is right. Superdelegates should not declare until after the balloting is over. I think he should have run for President unstead of Obama if black politicans wanted a run at the White House. I would have voted for him if I did not already support Clinton. i will never vote for Obama. Clinton 08

A. Harrison   April 30th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

So Biased you are Clyburn.

ChrisM   April 30th, 2008 7:09 pm ET

Here is a question for the "lets move on" crowd;
If any other candidate in this election had been a 20 year member of a racist church, would you still be trying to "put it to bed", indeed, would that candidate even be in the race at this point?

Selina   April 30th, 2008 7:04 pm ET

Mike,

Is there anything else you can type? Or comment on? All of the Democrats need to grow up. And Wolf shut up! I have seen any real reporting since this primary started. Just tabloid rubbish geared towards one candidate. Biased reporting on all channels. Disgusting.

Joseph Adewole   April 30th, 2008 7:04 pm ET

Wright should be sensible and listen to this golden advice….'The word of our elders are word of wisdom'. Jeremiah should just buy padlocks and seal his mouth.

Snowcat   April 30th, 2008 7:03 pm ET

How about this Rep taking his own words to heart. Silence could have been golden when he chose to dis Bill Clinton….."He needs to chill a little.." Am I the only one who sees the obvious here? Wright who proved by his brilliant NAACP speech, that he is intelligent and articulate. Goes on TV the very next day and acts like a retarded buffoon. Come on! Wright HAD to know he was doing damage to Obama. Wake up and smell the coffee America. Wright who used to counsel the Clintons when Billary was President, is now clearly working for the Clinton campaign.

Cynthia   April 30th, 2008 6:57 pm ET

Silence is golden and we all should be about Rev Wright.

No Obama   April 30th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

I think the writing is on the wall - Obama can never win in the general election. So if a democratic is going to win the White House, it has to be Hillary or no one.

Sante   April 30th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

(Please Post)

I personally believe that the NObama/Wright controversy was staged.

I believe that NObama used this farce as an opportunity to get on a platform and look emotional and apologetic to the American people.

I believe that NObama knew that he was losing momentum and needed to appeal (emotional) to the country.

NObama knew that he NEVER denounced himself from Wright, so he needed to try and do the right thing, to appeal to the Catholics, blue collar workers and white male voters that he was losing.

NObama and Wright are like two peas in a pod, this was staged I say!!!

Go Hillary!!!

Don't buy into NObamas false beliefs, he's a wolf in sheeps clothing!

Did anyone else believe that this could be?

Clyburn is NOT an UNDECIDED SUPERDELEGATE… HE is clearly an OBAMA SUPPORTER, has been and always will be.

All of his blithering to the contrary, the sole TASK of the SUPERDELEGATES is to choose the candidate who is MOST ELECTABLE! All of the other GARBAGE about most states, most delegates and most popular vote is just that: GARBAGE!

The SUPERDELEGATES are tasked with nominating the MOST ELECTABLE NOMINEE… clearly that is NOT Senator OBAMA!

Thank you Congressman Clyburn for intelligently laying out the parameters that should be used to select the democratic candidate. All democrats, regardless of which candidate they support now, have to eventually support the individual who will be facing John McCain in November. All this ranting and raving against Obama and Clinton by supporters (some of whom seem certifiable) will end and the party will have its candidate. Let's do what we can to help him/her to victory.
